What do you think about dæmons meaning different things in different cultures?? I.e snakes and foxes are cunning, sly, evil in western cultures but in eastern they = knowledge. Would this mean someone with a snake in the UK would have different traits different to someone in China? Or would they only be perceived differently?

I think if daemon forms were based on animal behaviors, it probably wouldn’t vary too much in terms of actual traits. Cultural context doesn’t have any bearing on how animals act so I don’t think it would change trait interpretation either haha.

Perception though, I think absolutely! That same cultural context is hard to ignore - snakes are a great example you gave. Western cultures may see them as untrustworthy or sly as you said, while eastern cultures might have more respect. And this would all depend on the person of course - I can only imagine the potential for bigotry in regards to daemon forms. But that’s an entirely different rabbit hole I don’t want fall in right now haha.

Hi I saw your a celestial witch & a diviner (& spiritual if i read that right??) so i feel a connection. My tools are a crystal ball, crystals & dice (don't have much money to buy more stuff). What ways can I combine my affinity for the stars with divination? Can I use crystals in divining? Also I'd like to start working with spirits but incredibly nervous, any advice? Where should I start?

I myself haven’t done this in some time, but one way to engage with crystals (other than the usual crystal ball) in a divinatory context would be to make a “throw bag” (that’s what I call it, not sure what other term to use) containing your favorite crystals. 

This would be a small opaque bag (perhaps just a paper bag), and, to divine, you would reach into the bag and, without looking, pull out a crystal. Then, you would interpret the message based on which crystal it was. I’ve done this before, but not wholly with crystals (I included other things too). 

Naturally, as you probably already know, a crystal ball is usually used for scrying, and I’ve a series about that on my blog, most of which are linked in this post (which is an exercise for getting started with any sort of scrying). 

I’ve not written a lot (personally) about scrying specifically with a crystal, but most (though not all) of what I’ve mentioned about scrying with other mediums (fire, water, sky, etc), applies to a crystal too. Maybe someone reading this can provide a good guide to crystal-specific scrying techniques? 

The stars and planets can actually be immensely useful in divination. You probably already know that each Tarot card has an astrological correspondence. If you took up Tarot, you would be able to learn a lot about astrology and the stars from connecting them to each card. If you’re not interested in cards, though, that’s great, too (everyone’s different, after all), because there’s plenty of other ways to combine divination with celestial interests. 

If, for example, you decide to make a throw bag for divination with your favorite crystals, you can associate each crystal with a celestial figure such as a sign of the zodiac or one of the planets. Many books on crystals gloss over this, but the planets and zodiac signs all have particular crystals associated with them.

Of course, you can build your own associations/connections between the crystals and the stars/planets, as well. A lot of such associations are personal. Many people, for example, associate bloodstone with Mars, but others might associate it with Venus instead, based on how they individually connect with the stone.

Returning to the matter of scrying, there’s actually a lot of ways to incorporate celestial witchcraft into scrying. One of the simplest would be just timing your scrying sessions based on planetary hours or days, for example - you could scry to learn about love matters on a Friday during the hour of Venus, or financial matters during the hour of Jupiter, etc. 

I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but I have a small masterpost of my own writings on celestial techniques that you can check out, too. Most of my work is focused on the planets rather than the zodiac, and a lot of the techniques I talk about in those posts (such as planetary squares and glyphs) don’t require any materials other than a pen and paper.

As to spirit work, don’t be too nervous. A bit of caution is important in anything, but most techniques that are used these days for contacting spirits are quite safe. If you’re intensely nervous about it, I would suggest casting a circle (of your preferred sort) prior to spirit workings, and being sure to cleanse and banish both before and after any sort of spirit communication. 

It’s also good to sort of start small, if that makes sense - begin by trying to get in touch with your local spirits, nature spirits, landwights, or the spirits within your own home.

 These tend to, for the most part, be pretty benevolent and open to human interaction! I’m planning on posting some more articles about spirit communication here shortly, but I don’t really know how soon they’ll be ready, but I hope this is helpful!

Can you do a drawing tutorial (idk if you have already)

Oooh, my first tutorial ask! Sorry for the delay, adulting is hard and takes time. Apologies if the tutorial is crap, I am no expert D:

(By the way, I used a character from a future comic I’m planning)

1. I start with a quick, simple sketch just to get the pose and feel down. I use a default brush in SAI, nothing fancy! If I’m stuck during this point, I’ll use photo references but since I got male torsos and fishtails down pretty good, I didn’t use refs:

2. I lower the opacity on the sketch layer and on another layer I start with the line art, using pen pressure to add weight to the lines. I’m a bit impatient and put lines down quickly so don’t expect neatness! I like to change brushes a lot, but I included the settings of my current fave:

3. (impatiently) finish the lines, touch up the details!

4. If I want to add colour, I just select and fill in the areas with flat colours on a layer below the line art layer. I know you said “drawing” tutorial but I felt like finishing up somewhat. 

5. I lock the colour layer and add blushes and basic gradients with a soft watercolour brush. Then I lock the lineart layer and colour some of the black lines in certain areas. 

6. Finally I add an overlay layer and use a soft brush to colour parts that I want more saturated. Some texture and playing around in photoshop…And that’s it!

Hi, I was just wondering (forgive me if this has been asked), for the magical people like Sebastien who take magical science, do they show an aptitude for magic in their youth before they study it? Also, what sort of magic are they taught?

Sometimes they do sometimes they don’t. We will be touching that subject this season actually ;)

As for the science. I chose it because I didn’t want the classic wizards with wands kind of thing so science seemed like a good solution.

Actually I think I’ve been using the wrong word for it now I think about it (yay Dutch) It would be chemistry actually I think. 

As you may have noticed Seb arrived in October wich makes him a bit late for school usually but I figured since he’s pretty new to this there would be a half school year of introduction to the basics of magic. (Jan - June)  Especially for the ones that are from the human world. (Matisse is another case but youll see later in the comic)

After that they really start the study and maybe have a general first year and can specialize after? Like for example go into medicine or something. 

Bit vague I know. We’ll try to make it more clear throughout the comic ;)

Wanted to start with saying how much I love the kitty pryde/rogue/bobby drake trio idea u have, it's amazing. as is the way you draw storm, someone i rarely see drawn by anybody anymore. also the kitty slating captain america with scott made me literally laugh, which is rare thing so thank you so much. I wanted to ask u what ur dream team for X-men? like is it a group of like 5 or so teenagers? All adults? who's in the team? so interested in all ur xm ideas!

Wow! This has been sitting in my inbox forever now- I am sosorry I must have totally missed it under palette requests haha! Though I AM SOGLAD YOU ASKED BECAUSE I HAVE MANY ANSWERS FOR THIS  THAT HAVE BEEN WAITING TO BE SAID

My absolute dream for the X Men is like a sorta complicatedtier system, so hang with me for a sec; broken up in the X Mansion, the X Team,the New Mutants, and the Brotherhood—

The X Mansion is like all the folks who work mainly with thestudents or running the school and the X Team’s publicity shit lmao.Personally, I like Charles, Jean, and Rouge in charge of the actual school. Likethey organize the educational system, they make sure the students are safe, theyencourage mutant development and stuff. Jean and Rouge may go out to the field withthe team, but since they’re so powerful, they usually only handle the reallydangerous stuff. (Since Jean is an Omega level mutant, and honestly if Bobby is then Rouge should be let’s bereal here)

The X Team is the actual X Men who like solve crimes andshit lmao. Obviously, because I’m Me™,Kitty is the leader of the main team, with her second of hand being Scott. The restof the main team is Bobby, Jubs, Kurt, and Magik. Like I said, Rouge and Jeantag along sometimes (Rouge more than Jean); Hank, Alex, Ororo, Piotr, and Loganalso frequent the Team, but they mainly teach. Everyone here was recruited byCharles, and also work at the school.

The New Mutants would be like the kids recruited by Kittyand Jean later on:  its like the lowcrime stuff and mainly they do training. This is led by Dani Moonstar. Thesecond hand is Karma, and the rest of the team is Roberto da Costa, SamuelGuthrie, and Rahne Sinclair. They are the best and I love them. They wererecruited as students and after tests and volunteering and a lot of essays toprove they understand what they’re getting into, they get to start training.

The Brotherhood is basically all the same age mutants as theX Team, but they were trained by Erik (basically watch X Men Evo and you’ll getwhat I’m getting at hahah) They’re like the weird uncles who mean wellunderneath all their bitterness and also commit petty crimes (and also like…murder sometIMES) These guys are “run” by Mystique, but tbh they have nostructure they’re just assholes who live together. Also, Pietro and Wanda, Toad(aka my son), St. John Allerdyce, and Dominikos Petrakis lmao. They are trashand I love them?

(The First Class team is more or less retired now, but they were Charles, Erik, Raven, Moira, Hank,Alex, Logan, and Ororo. Charles didn’t do much since he was terrible atfighting but he liked the outfit lmao)

TL;DR: My main team is Kitty, Bobby, Scott, Jubs, Kurt,Illyana, and Rouge!! My secondary is 100% is Dani, Karma, Roberto, Samuel, andRahne.

Hi, nice blog! I was wondering if there were nay differences between a fox and a snake daemon besides the playfulness of a fox? At first I thought I was a fox but now I'm not sure

Hmm, well that would depend on the species of fox and snake. But generally speaking, I would say their sociability is usually going to be the biggest difference between the two. Many snake species are non-social introverts who need their alone time. Foxes, on the other hand, tend to have a close social circle (although again, this depends on the fox species. Grey foxes are more solitary while corsac foxes are more outgoing)

Hi, I read the first 2 volumes of catwoman (new 52) but found it suffered from too many faults to continue to read. Apparently it has improved, so i was wondering at what point I should start reading it again

Yeah Winick’s run was bad and the next one was a mess too so if you want to read good new 52 Catwoman the best you can do is read the two trades of Valentine’s run ( Vol. 7 and 8 which you can get here and here) it had amazing writing and art and it introduced Eiko Hasigawa the third Catwoman. 

The current run is nothing special and then the book is getting cancelled in June and DC is not relaunching it.

Also have you read Brubaker’s run yet? because it’s a must-read for Catwoman fans.

If you could start the x-men from scratch and have your own x-men cartoon or something, who would be on the team?

Oooh man. It’s been a while since I’ve had the time to really kick my comic reading back into gear so I’m a LITTLE rusty on things but I’ll answer this as best I can. I don’t know if I can really summarize who I would want on a single team (I would likely have two or three sets of teams, similar to how there’s been the main x-men, younger groups, x-factor, etc in the past) but I do have a few ideas about how I’d like to see things: 

Quentin Quire. The kid was set up to do VERY IMPORTANT THINGS involving Phoenix and so far- aside from minor events- nothing. He is one of the few characters capable of possessing Phoenix full time and not being affected by it. Jean is the other that comes to mind, but even that led to Dark Phoenix, while there’s been glimpses of Quentin far in the future, completely fine. So, I would definitely want him on a team. Preferably alongside a few of the other younger kids, like Idie and Evan. 

I adore Laura. I am happy with what’s happening with her, though I haven’t read the last few issues. But I would love for her and Daken to meet again and see how that goes. He’s had some LOVELY character development lately and I love seeing their sibling relationship grow. 

As far as a main team... Storm for sure. Probably as the leader. She’s always been one of my favorite X-Men leaders. I personally love Remy and with their friendship it would be fun to see them on a team together again. Beyond that, I’m not sure at the moment- I might make some post on it another time, once I’m reading more frequently again.

This is more of a bio question. You may or may not be a UK student but I'm finding biochemistry difficult, how do the other areas of biology fare in comparison? is biochemistry one of the easier sections? any tips on how to be better at difficult topics?

Hey! I’m a greek student! I personally find biochemistry very interesting, because of my professor. It's a difficult subject with a lot of reaction networks and I find it hard to remember every single detail. I think that many bio students struggle with genetics too, although it's such a fun section to me.

That time I had a biochem subject, I categorized every reaction network, eg. glykolysis, citric acid cycle, and I wrote them down on papers. I reviewed them at night, so I learnt the content pretty effortlessly. After that, I studied the details and learnt them easily, because I already knew the big picture.

The secret is to study right after the class, review your notes or rewrite them and if you have a question, just ask the professor (or me! haha). And please, to all of the students out there, don't cram the night before the test or the exam. You might do well, but in a couple of days after, you won't remember anything and that's not good, trust me!
