Hi! 1) I love the before/after kiln photos you post. I've never loaded a kiln myself, it's always been the kiln owners to do it, so I find it interesting to see how you arrange the ceramics. 2) And it's nice to see a lot of your ceramics all together. 3) Also I find it very funny how underglazed clay is pretty much the same before and after firing, while raw glaze is opaque and hides how it'll be after. Like gift wrapping <3 4) Do you know how big the kiln you use is? Over here we measure its internal volume in liters but maybe you use another unit. 5) I always love seeing one of your posts on my dash <3

1) I’m glad other people enjoy the before and afters too, I always find it fascinating. I was taught to load a kiln about five years ago and since then I’ve loaded/unloaded the kilns 60+ times—most of them mine, but some of then were student pottery from the studio’s classes. I find it much harder to load for a bisque fire, stacking pottery makes me super nervous lol. I prefer glaze fires.

2) I enjoy that too! since I don’t really sell at markets anymore, this is one of the few times I see a bunch of my pieces together. I always mean to take pictures of all of it grouped together, but I’m usually too frazzled during picture time lol

3) it really is weird. glaze will always mystify me a little. but, in my experience, older underglazes (30-40+ years, some of the ones I use are older than me) are often very different colours before and after firing, so it seems like the recipes have changed over time to make underglazes more similar from before to after

4) I’m pretty sure this kiln is 16.5 cubic feet. so like 467 liters. Canada can’t decide if it’s on imperial or metric, so we use both 😐

Do you have any specific advice for insuring a sculpture, akin to the general size and shape of what you make, doesn’t explode in the kiln? Your art is honestly amazing and has inspired me to try and get back into 3D art (I suck at it). I’m very worried about a project exploding from trapped air. Thank you for your time.

i haven't really had problems with stuff exploding in the kiln myself (save some pit fires which are inherently hard to control haha) i just make sure my pieces are super dry before they go into the kiln. from what i understand, the trapped air causing explosions thing is a bit of a misunderstanding anyway - water in clay is what's really the problem. so giving closed forms holes for airflow and making sure no part of your piece is too thick to ensure it dries well is the goal! if your pieces are as dry as they can be before firing them, you should be good

What are your thoughts about the latest chapter of Dress up Darling?

Dress Up Darling is one of those manga where I am fully along for the ride, since I rarely know where the plots are taking me. I do know that this hiatus is going to kill me because I am dying for Gojo and Marin to actually have to interact alone.

It's always hard to say how much Gojo understands about his own feelings, but it's clear after Comiket that he does not feel entirely casual about his attraction to her. But it's hard to know if he's translated that into romantic feelings, or whether he's just going to be immensely guilty that he has any possessive feelings at all. He's always been big on saying that Marin is her own person, and he's always been so happy when people see how special she is...but this is definitely a different scale. And for different reasons! Marin comments that he's acting normal, but I'd say he's also pulled back quite a bit on his usual attentiveness towards her. Though it's hard to say if he's actually trying to create distance or like...is trying to seem like a totally normal and responsible guy in front of her dad 🤣

For Marin's part, it's very interesting how disinterested she seems in all her new options. Famous directors and mangakas are praising her, she's front page on every cosplay forum, and there's people offering her jobs because of it...and she really can't summon up much enthusiasm. She's much more worried what this all means for her and Gojo, and it makes her...oddly subdued. Which might also be because of her dad being around!

It'll be hard to say what the long-lasting implications of this whole arc is going to be until they actually have to exist together without anyone else to smooth things over. But things definitely seem...awkward.

everyone should attempt an artisan craft at some point in their life because it would cut down the number of comments questioning why handmade goods like ceramics or textile craft or woodworking are so expensive

and this is an unrealistic expectation, but I think the attempt should include seeing through to the end at least one "finished" item, no matter how clumsy or lumpy your first attempts might be. like to me, there's a huge difference in perspective between attempting to learn how to crochet or throw a pot for a few days, acknowledging that it's harder than it looks and giving up, versus committing to finishing that scarf or clay pot you started and working on it for weeks while you painstakingly learn from your mistakes and grow attached to your project while also simultaneously hating it.

once you finish the latter, your perspective changes from "why does this crocheted blanket cost $200" to "holy shit I can't believe they're charging $200 for this crocheted blanket instead of $2000" because you may have known crocheting is hard, you may have easily agreed with the idea that "handmade goods take time and effort" even before attempting a craft, but now you know firsthand the absolute time sink it takes to make things. like yeah dude, that one item took you 2 months to make and probably wasn't even an ultra complex item if it was the first thing you made, now imagine attaching an hourly wage to that time to calculate the cost (and this is ignoring every nuance of the artistic element and master crafters being able to work faster/charge higher because of their years and years of experience)

anyway this rant has been motivated by a comment I saw on someone else's ceramic post asking why a mug was $60 and they understand it's handmade but $60 just seems overpriced, and bro do you know how long ceramics take to make. that mug probably took at minimum 3 weeks between how long it takes to throw the mug, dry partially, trim the mug, dry fully, bisque fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, sand and paint and glaze, glaze fire, wait a day for the kiln to cool, take product photography of the mug, write description and list the mug online for sale, im not even including the skill needed to complete all these steps without the mug literally exploding or collapsing while also making it an appealing piece of art, aaaaaaaaaaaaa
