This is the last box from the car which you’re grateful for. When you decided to go out shopping to redecorate your room, you didn’t expect to find a bunch of stuff on sale—more than you really need. Never mind that. You’re always happy to have trinkets that make a room lighter.

Tony graciously allowed you to live at the Avengers compound up north in exchange for your shapeshifting skills. You can shift into anyone and anything just by looking at them. You gain their DNA code through your almost x-ray sight, and you’re able to shift into them no matter how small or big they are compared to you.

It’s your specialty.

It took a long time for you to master your skills but you’re always learning something new about yourself. It’s why you’re at the compound. You get to live with living legends such as Steve, Wanda, Sam, Vision, and unfortunately, Loki. The only reason he’s on Earth is because he’s being punished for what he’s done in Asgard. You’re not sure of his crimes but it’s severe enough to banish him from Asgard even if it’s only for a short time. The agreement is that he’d help out with the Avengers until he’s learned his lesson whatever that may be.

The only issue is that you really, really, really don’t like him. It’s not enough to use the word ‘hate’ since you believe that’s such a strong word, but you can’t stand the man. Not only is Loki arrogant and cocky but he hates doing anything remotely helpful. He’s a nuisance most of the time and loves to get under everyone’s skin, especially yours.

It doesn’t help that you two are the complete opposite of each other. He’s a black cat while you’re a golden retriever. He loves being alone while you love being around people. He loves reading and staying in while you love going out. He’s grumpy most of the time whereas you’re all rainbows and sunshine (as he likes to put it). You’ve always been such an upbeat and bubbly person, and you’re not going to let someone like Loki dim your light.

The box you’re carrying to your room contains pink and frilly pillows for your bed along with some yellow curtains you fell in love with at first sight. It won’t keep the light out but it’ll give some color to your white-wall room. You enter your room and notice Loki standing on the other side of the bed looking through one of the boxes you brought in earlier. He’s such a dark contrast to your colorful room.

The walls might be white but you have rainbow lights strung up, pink and yellow picture frames, a blue-framed bulletin board filled with even more pictures of you and your friends, and other pops of color. Loki is the only thing that’s black due to the clothes he’s wearing.

“What are you doing in my room?” you ask and set the box on the bed.

“I’m looking for something.”

“This is only because I’m trying to rise above and be a better person, but what are you looking for? How can I help you?”

Loki pulls out something from the box he’s looking through with a frown.

“Really? Rainbow stickers and dreamcatchers?”

You storm over to him and snatch the items from his hands.

“How can I help you?” you repeat.

“I’m looking for the tape,” he smirks.

“Out of all the rooms you could have gone to, you thought my room was the best to go snooping around for tape?”

“You’re right.” Loki shrugs. “I just wanted to see where you keep your knickers.”

You scoff, grab the tap from your desk drawer, and shove it into his chest.

“There. You have tape. Get out.”

Loki doesn’t argue and leaves while laughing. You can’t help but glare at the spot he was just in. You hate violence despite what you do for a living, but you want to strangle that man sometimes. Push down the negative thoughts. Just focus on you. You put away most of your new decorations and shove the rest of them in your closet. It’s the weekend and there isn’t an active mission to go on so you think you’ll spend it relaxing by the pool and enjoying time to yourself.

You might like being around people but you enjoy time to yourself as well. You quickly change into your bathing suit and grab your towel before heading down to the pool. You pick a lounge chair that’s right below the skylight so that you can still be in the sun. You’re alone for maybe ten minutes before the pool doors open and someone walks in. You look through your sunglasses to see Loki walking in wearing nothing but black swimming trunks.

You roll your eyes and close them again with the intent of ignoring him. He jumps into the pool and makes a big splash in which water splashes on your legs. You have the urge to jump into the pool just to drown him but you keep trying to rise above.

“Come on, love, jump in. The water’s nice.”

“No. Leave me alone.”

Loki has never been good at listening to orders given to him or he does listen and chooses not to follow them. He continues to make noise in the pool to get a rise out of you but you will not sink low enough to give him what he wants. He continues to make noises for a good ten minutes before stopping completely. Finally, some peace and quiet. You smirk and look to the water thinking you have won this round but your eyes go wide when you see him lying facedown in the pool.

You scream and rush over to the edge of the pool. Your glasses had fallen off but you don’t care about that right now. You might not like Loki but you don’t want him dead. You reach in and grab his arm so you can pull him out of the water, and he flops onto the ground like a dead fish. You roll him onto his back and shake his shoulders in an attempt to wake him up.

“Shit, Loki, this isn’t funny. Wake up.” You push at his chest but he doesn’t budge. “Loki?”

One of your previous jobs was as a lifeguard for the public pool in your hometown which you needed to get CPR certified for. It doesn’t matter that you haven’t used it since that time, you still know how to administer it. You start chest compressions on Loki’s chest three times before pinching his nose together and blowing air into his mouth. Three chest compressions and blow into his mouth. You do this twice before going down for a third time.

This time, however, just as your lips touch Loki’s, he reaches up and places his hand on the back of your head to keep you there. He presses you more firmly on his lips and kisses you like you two are a couple. Your brain is working to catch up to the rest of your body and the second his tongue touches yours, it does. You quickly push Loki off you and jump to your feet.

“My hero,” he smirks at your flustered face.

“You’re an asshole.” You snatch your glasses and towel before storming over to the doors. “I hope you drown next time.”

“Oh, come on, love. I was joking,” he laughs.

You want to be mad but the only thing you can think of is stupid Loki with his stupid face and his unbelievably soft lips.

Op-Ed: Spotify’s New ‘Discovery Mode’ Is Just Payola

The streaming service is rolling out a thinly veiled pay-for-play scheme that profits off the pandemic, write the musicians and songwriters of the Artist Rights Alliance

Getting discovered in the music business has never been easy. Before the pandemic, artists could at least rely on the industry’s historic mainstay to break through — playing as many gigs as possible and hoping to build a following. But with that path closed for now, artists and their label partners are increasingly dependent on Spotify, the undisputed king of music streaming, and its black box algorithms.

That’s why Spotify’s cynical decision to use this moment to launch a new pay-for-play scheme pressuring vulnerable artists and smaller labels to accept lower royalties in exchange for a boost on the company’s algorithms is so exploitative and unfair. Artists must unite to condemn this thinly disguised royalty cut, which apparently has just been released in “beta” mode and is soon expected to enter the market in full force. 

The company’s press release announcing the so-called Discovery Mode seems almost designed to confuse busy artists and hide what’s really going on. (“This might sound complicated,” Spotify writes, “and it is!”) Rather than simply describe the trade off in straightforward terms — artists accept a lower royalty rate and the platform recommends their music to more listeners — the press release buries the truth beneath vague platitudes about giving “artists a say in how their music is discovered.”

In practice, of course, once Spotify launches this program, it’s likely to set in motion a race to the bottom in which many active artists feel compelled to pay up rather than risk being left behind in the battle for exposure. The unhappy result of this race? Artists and their labels end up receiving lower royalties without gaining any meaningful additional exposure at all, because if everyone is “boosted,” nobody is. If every artist, made even more vulnerable by the lack of touring income during the pandemic, pays up, there just won’t be any relative gain at all.  

Another potential path for Discovery Mode is that the required royalty cut ends up being so steep that working artists and independent labels cannot even afford to pay it, clearing the field for major record labels and pop megastars to swallow up even more of the streaming pie. This means that working artists, independent labels, and above all music fans looking to expand and diversify their listening end up losing out. Some members of the hip-hop community have been vocal in warning that this could set diversity back despite Spotify’s own recognition of the need for progress in this area. (Some music companies, including BMG and Beggars Group, have also signaled concern about the potential impact of Discovery Mode recently.)

Spotify’s money grab would be unacceptable at any time, but it’s especially hard to swallow in the midst of a global pandemic that has cut off artist income streams while driving massive subscriber and revenue growth for the platform. Adding insult to injury, the launch of Discovery Mode comes alongside other efforts by Spotify and their Washington, D.C. lobbyists to divide the creative community — see the company’s appeal of a copyright royalty board decision that would increase pay for songwriters — and distract us from the fact that, despite the company’s own massive market cap and post-IPO stock balloon, it’s still a failure when it comes to paying adequately for the music that has fueled its success.

Which isn’t to say that Spotify might not succeed. Like Google and Facebook before it, Spotify has charted a typically anticompetitive path — leveraging cut-rate pricing and massive data holdings to drive runaway growth until the company represents so much of the market it becomes indispensable, then cashing in when audiences, artists, and labels have no meaningful way to negotiate or resist. Spotify has managed to lap even Apple Music, with nearly 60 million more paid subscribers worldwide.

Spotify’s long history of below market royalties and anti-artist positioning are well known, of course. Just this August, the company’s billionaire CEO derided artists unhappy with the company’s subpar royalty payouts as backwards-looking malcontents unwilling to put in the work needed for “continuous engagement” with modern fans. Still, rolling out a new set of payola demands in the middle of a global pandemic that has working artists struggling to stay afloat marks a new low.

If Spotify genuinely wants to partner with artists and labels on playlists, priorities, and listener recommendations, it should start by sharing basic information about the algorithms and data powering those processes. Transparency would allow creators to make informed choices and pursue commercial success on the platform in a straightforward way, rather than the current game of digital blind man’s bluff creators are forced to play.

That might not provide the kind of short-term boost to Spotify’s bottom line that Discovery Mode is likely to produce. But it would start the company and creators down a far more sustainable path of partnership, cooperation, and trust.

Door Reviews: Chicory: A Colorful Tale (2021)

PREAMBLE

Hello, folks! Doors here again with another Gaming Review for y’alls! I forgot how I heard of this game, but all I remember is that one day I saw it on my Twitter feed, then I wishlisted it! It went on a sale sometime last year, so I bought it, and well, here we are!

What’s it about? I’d describe Chicory: A Colorful Tale as a Metroidvania Platformer involving a dog-turned-artist and their journey as a budding artist. It is a very cute game with a good story, and I’m eager to talk about it, so let’s get to it!

STYLE (Gameplay, Graphics, Music)

Chicory: A Colorful Tale presents itself as a coloring book turned into a game. Early on in the game, you get The Brush, the main way you interact with the game’s environment. Everything in the world is in black and white, just waiting to be colored in. Even the NPC’s can be colored in to your preference! I find this very unique and fun. It’s nice to try and find the right color for everything and just unleash my creativity through this game, even though I’m not a trained artist.

There are certain objects that, when colored in with your Brush, transform into a different form. A small mushroom can grow into a mushroom big enough to jump from, and this big-ish tree that blocks your way can be shrunk into an anemone-looking plant, opening up the way. This is how the game’s Platformer gameplay manifests: you interact with the environment with your Brush, and see how you can get from one screen to another with it. As you progress through the story, your Brush grows in power, and you will be able to access more areas.

Navigating through the game definitely felt like a puzzley platformer. It was just the right amount of hard for me: difficult enough to be interesting, but not too difficult that I’d wrack my brain too much and consult a guide. And if there were things that did end up being too hard for me, I could just use the in-game hint system, which, in itself, can be vague enough to point you in the right direction, or detailed enough to give you the right answer, while ALSO being framed as a very cute call to your parents for help! Like literally, the hint system is you going to a payphone and calling your mom, explaining your situation, and then your mom giving you advice, with your dad excitedly wanting to talk to you as well. You don’t have to talk to him if you don’t want to spoil the puzzle, though!

There are other aspects to the game. Aside from the platformer parts and the coloring/painting parts, there’s also a bunch of collectibles lying around! There are a lot of them, like gift boxes containing clothes for your character, bigger gift boxes containing Brush Styles for more varied brush strokes when coloring and painting, litter lying around that you can exchange for decoration items in-game, and... lost kittens. Yes, you can find kittens stuck up trees in this game. There are so many of them. Every time I saw a shaking tree I was like WHY ARE YOU IN THERE CAT??? HOW DID YOU GET STUCK IN THERE???

You can also dress up your character and decorate certain areas. There’s a lot of clothes to choose from, though you have to collect them from gift boxes first. I had fun wearing the first few hats and shirts that I found, and as I found more I started experimenting on how I wanted my character to look like. It’s fun mixing and matching stuff! As for decoration, you find them either in exchange for litter or as a reward for finding lost kittens. I didn’t explore the decoration aspect of the game much, but I nonetheless do find it interesting. It reminds me of how I am currently decorating my room with all the art prints I bought over the years. Interior design!!

The art is very cute! And the coloring mechanic is simple enough, yet also allows for a measure of variety in some places. I find it very refreshing, though at times I wish I could have a smaller brush size available for mouse and keyboard, as I can only cycle through three brush sizes. My favorite character design is Marzipan. She’s just so cute!!!

The music is very cute, with it getting serious when the situation demands it. There’s a surprising amount of music in this game, 2.5 hours of it according to Spotify! I could get lost in the music honestly, it’s such a nice vibe.

All in all, I enjoyed how the game presented itself! Very lovely and cute, is how I would describe it.

SUBSTANCE (Story, Characters, Impact)

The plot centers around a dog janitor (whom you control) and their boss Chicory, the current Wielder of The Brush. The Wielder is crucial to the world of Picnic. It is a long and storied role passed down from generation to generation, with each Wielder choosing a successor and handing them The Brush. Their job is to give color to Picnic, each Wielder building on those that came before, and painting Picnic in their own way, building on their legacy while making their own.

Your character ends up having to wield the brush through circumstances, as Picnic inexplicably loses all color! They have to talk to various NPC’s and explore the world in order to find the cause of the problem and to fix this right and proper mess y’all have found yourselves in.

The game’s story has a lot of moments of levity. At the start of the game, the NPC’s ask you for favors, which the game uses as an opportunity to teach you the game controls. They also manage to show the various personalities of these NPC’s. One of my favorite NPC’s is this one squirrel who likes to embody toughness. I loved his little story! There are a lot of characters who ask you for help with things and talk to you about themselves, and all of them have this personable charm to them that I like.

The story has a lot to say about the process of making art, about being an artist and the accompanying insecurities it comes with, and about finding your place in the world. For a cute-seeming game, it talks about deep topics with a depth and ease that I didn’t expect! Even though I’m not an artist, I found myself relating to the characters’ struggles. When they succeed, I found myself cheering for them. I was very much invested in this little dog’s life and adventures.

I enjoyed the story a lot! It really draws you in if you just let it. This is one of the stories that I will be thinking about for a long time. I will talk about it more in a more spoilery review I plan to write soon! I feel like I will do the spoilery reviews on games that really left an impact on me, as it is difficult to talk about these games without giving spoilers.

VERDICT

Chicory: A Colorful Tale has been a lovely experience for me. I probably used the word “cute” a lot in this review, but that’s because the game just oozes with cuteness! There’s a certain serenity to playing this game, just coloring places at your own pace. It set out to be a coloring book game of sorts, and I think it’s successful in that regard and then some! More people need to play this game, and frankly I think it’s criminal that this game doesn’t seem to be that well known! So go and play it!!!!

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is a 2016 American superhero film based on the DC Comics supervillain/anti-hero team of the same name. Warner Bros. Pictures, produced by RatPac-Dune Entertainment, DC Films, and Atlas Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Distributed by Pictures,[4] it is the third installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Principal photography began on April 13, 2015 in Toronto, Ontario, with additional filming in Chicago and ended in August of that year. Suicide Squad premiered in New York City on August 1, 2016, and was released in the United States on August 5. After a strong debut that set new box office records, the film grossed over $746 million worldwide, making it the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2016. The film received negative reviews from critics, criticizing its plot, dialogue, direction, editing, action scenes and use of licensed music, although Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn was praised by some. The film won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 89th Academy Awards; It is the only DCEU film to win an Academy Award. This is where I co-developed the first Oracle on Ethereum with Mariano Conti to facilitate the creation of SAI, the predecessor to DAI.  During my time at Maker, I also created DSProxy, an industry-standard account abstraction primitive, and OasisDEX, the first decentralized exchange on Ethereum with an order-matching engine. As of 2021, the focus has been on developing Chronicle to drive a new paradigm around the verifiability and cost efficiency of on-chain data.” What drove you to take Chronicle Protocol in this direction and open up the Oracle of MakerDAO to the broader Web3 space? “Currently, Oracle protocols don’t reflect the core values of Web3, they lack transparency, they aren’t verifiable, and, particularly on Ethereum, they are prohibitively expensive to operate.    At Maker, we have a culture of taking as long as we need to build the best solution. We’ve never used an external Oracle protocol. We built our own. This approach has benefitted Chronicle in many ways, resulting in an Oracle product that is market-leading in terms of operational cost, security, decentralization, and transparency. It wasn’t until we looked outside of the Maker bubble and compared it to other Oracle protocols that it became clear this was something we should spin out and offer to everyone. We believe that Chronicle’s approach can not only win market share from incumbents but also pave the way for truly decentralized systems. Decentralized systems require unquestionable trust, and we believe the way to achieve this is by ensuring the data they rely on is verifiable.” When you say verifiable, what does that mean in the context of Oracles? “Too much infrastructure in crypto operates like a ‘black box’. Currently, Oracles are like fortune tellers, delivering price data that must be taken at face value. We believe this is antithetical to the ethos of Web3, of ‘Don’t trust, verify’.    Even more so when in the context of DeFi, this data essentially instructs when and if end-users get liquidated, etcetera. We’ve designed our protocol to interact with our dashboard, The Chronicle, and allow anyone to intuitively track the data we deliver, end-to-end. What price did our Oracle report for ETH/USD at any given time, and, most importantly, how did the Oracle arrive at this value? Which exchanges and pairs were queried, and which Feed was selected?  We are the only Oracle that doesn’t use data aggregators to cut corners. 👻 What is your wildest headcanon?

My wildest headcanon? That's a hard one. I don't really do a lot of headcanoning! Mostly I just turn stuff into actual fanfic rather than just headcanoning it, and so I keep a layer of separation between the canon and my fic, if that makes sense. I guess I have a lot of headcanons of Fire Emblem characters being lesbians in canon even while not strictly defined as such (like Minerva and Palla in fe11), but those are usually pretty common ones.

Here's a couple of headcanons for you:

Nico Minoru (of Marvel's Runaways and others) realized she was bisexual while on the team of A-FORCE (2016), i.e. while surrounded by gorgeous and powerful women. Because come on. (Context: in the original Runaways series from the early 2000s, Nico was portrayed as straight: in the new Runaways series from 2018, she had since realized her bisexuality.)

In Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, only characters who are lovers and characters with the Thief class can exchange gold. I think this is because the Thief (Dew in the first gen, Patty or Daisy in the second) characters happen to be people who deeply love all their friends.

I also headcanon...pretty much everyone as trans and/or gay. If I like them (especially for Fire Emblem, where characters often have very little character at all) they get the "YOU ARE GAY NOW" seal of approval.

Oh, here's a real wild one! Wolf (from Fire Emblem 11) is a trans woman! This is because YOU saw her and went "she's a girl" and I went "okay" and rolled with it. This may come up in my fanfic sometime, who can say

I do! Here's a section from the first chapter of a Minerva/Palla haunted house AU I've been working on in the background.

The room is soaked in dust. At one point in time it had probably been a bedroom, and indeed a bed frame rots grayly in the corner. Rather than any mattress, however, it’s covered in boxes: boxes which have sprawled out to take over the rest of the room like an invasive species of plant. The walls are bare. The edge of the room’s one window can just be made out, the rest of it totally obscured by still more boxes. They stack five feet high easily, and though Palla is tall enough to circumnavigate the undergrowth they form with ease, and Catria at least tall enough to manage, Est can barely see over the box in front of her, and she complains loudly at this. Catria argues lightly back, and Palla smiles under her breath as she makes her way around, simply looking. 

None of the boxes are labeled: the lower ones have more the look of trunks, and Palla idly wonders when cardboard had been invented, whether this was someone else’s reshuffling of the Macedons’ remaining possessions after their departure. She cracks open the nearest top box to find stacks of books: unlabeled volumes in that old style you would see on the shelves of houses that had become museums. Carefully opening one, then another, to their title pages, she sees that they are books of strategy: for warfare and diplomacy. Interesting. 

I just love the Whitewings and Macedon and all that jazz! Also I should write more of this, I was having a load of fun with it.

✨️ Out of the comments you’ve received on your fics, what are two or three of your favorites?

! I love to receive any comments because it tells me that people enjoyed my work enough to tell me about it, and when you write for fandoms that are as relatively obscure as I do (in terms of fanworks), every little bit counts for a lot! The exception to the obscure fandoms of course is the Goncharov fic I wrote, which became hugely popular and now I'm considering writing a second chapter or sequel, just because of the absolutely hogwild response.

Here's a coupla specifics:

"Always happy to see the Nagi tag get a little bigger, and you have a fascinating version of her here! I thought your interpretation of the setting was brilliant and you really brought out the nuances of the characters you portrayed just before such a climactic final battle." from Oricalle on my fic Meetings, Manifestations, and Manaketes. (I have a lot of fun naming my fics.) They left this comment after I read through some of their works and left some comments, which made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Every comment on my Goncharov fic for being brilliantly in on the joke, but especially this one from tinuviel_tinuviel:

i think the best fire emblem game names are the jugdral ones, i.e. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. let’s break this down.

1. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

this one rules firstly because it’s really long and weird. in a series with game names that evoke fantasy tropes and magic (like “blazing blade” and “shadow dragon” and “sacred stones”, or even something like “path of radiance,” or “mystery of the emblem,” which could be a nancy drew novel title), this game name easily stands out the most in the list. like okay, fantasy, fantasy, mystery, magic, artefacts...Genealogy. you know what i associate genealogy with?? my mom looking at ancestry dot com for fun and trying to collate our family history a few years back. i do NOT associate it with magic boys with swords and tragedy and pseudo-medieval political machinations. too bad that’s what you get!

secondly? it’s fully accurate. i mean i know game names are usually relevant to their games (because otherwise whats the fuckin point) but like. “shadow dragon and the blade of light” specifically calls out 1 character (the shadow dragon) and 1 magic artifact (the blade of light). three houses is about 3 houses but you only pick one of them and the only relevance it has to the story is “you pick between 3 groups” and “there are 3 groups in the game that fight each other.” big deal. that’s also true of, like, arguments i have with my family over what game we want to play at thanksgiving.

genealogy of the holy war? you cannot escape the fact that this game is a genealogy of a holy war. 100% of the game is dedicated to being a genealogy of a holy war. (if you’re not familiar: the first half of the game follows a dude named Sigurd as he gets embroiled in political conspiracy as a scapegoat by an evil cult that’s manipulating the government. the second half follows his son (and the kids of all his friends from the first generation) some ~20 years later as they go and fight the evil cult that’s now fully taken over the government.) you wield weapons blessed by your gods and use them to defeat a cult that wields dark magic and a weapon blessed by their (evil) god. this war is really fuckin holy. and hey two generations (AND the pairings in the first generation alter the stats of kids in the second) where it matters who your parents are - thats a genealogy baby! we did it! that’s the name of the game! and it’s Everywhere.

2. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

what the fuck. what the fuck is this. “thracia”?? that isn’t a real word. all the other fire emblem titles are real words. why is 776 there?? is it seven hundred seventy six?? is it 7:76, the worst time of the day?? is it like 7.76?? it’s the fifth game in the series!! not the 776th one!! no other fire emblem games have numbers in the titles!! what the fuck is going on!?!?

The gold crown rings? When do we think those happened? I can see the ring on Mariana’s hand in New Years photos (Mariana in yellow dress), so I’ll say they were exchanged during the Dec/Jan time together. When that cute “queres ser mi novia” photo was taken I would assume either that same Dec/Jan trip or possibly during the competition?

Dear writer,

Thank you so, so much for writing something for one of my dance canons! I am so excited for this exchange, and while coming up with prompts for these works, most of which are abstract, was sometimes a bit of a struggle for me, I hope my ramblings will inspire you. In general, for all these works I would just love something that evokes the mood of the piece: the music, the costumes, the movement, sometimes that certain vague yet clearly present something that specific dancers brought to a role… So if you end up writing something that is more of a mood piece, something dreamy and prose-poem-y, a character study (or the study of a duet or group’s dynamic), something closer to meta about either the making of a piece (incl. “how the theatrical sausage gets made” stories) or its meaning (whatever that may be), than a story with a plot, that’s great! And if you come up with story with a plot, that’s great too!

While I only requested fic, I would be beyond delighted to receive either fic or art treats! :-)

Agon – Balanchine/Stravinsky

Group: Female Soloist/Male Soloist (NYCB 1957 Agon)

I find everything about the background to the making of this ballet and its original cast so interesting. Arthur Mitchell talked in many later interviews about Balanchine deliberately making a point – even though the ballet is technically plotless – about both race and sex (and dance and music and visual style, too) in casting Mitchell and Diana Adams in the central pas de deux. Then there’s Mitchell’s position as a Black principal dancer in the 1950s; Adams being older than he as well as one of Balanchine’s favorite ballerinas but escaping, almost by accident, becoming embroiled with Balanchine to the point where he’d eventually lose interest, or alienating him the way a Farrell or a Kent or a Kirkland went on to do; Balanchine himself, with his manipulative ways and his desire to control his dancers even as he also adjusted his choreographic ideas to them…

I would love something that touches on those RL dynamics as well, or even in the place of, a fic specifically about the ballet, so if you feel like writing something that’s RPF, that’s great, and if it’s something that combines elements of RPF with on-stage happenings, that’s great too! There’s how the choreography combines competition with delicacy in partnering, how it’s both sexy and geometrical, both classy and nervy. The pas de deux was very daring for its time, again, due to both race and some of the choreography, and I’d love something about the two soloists’ big forbidden love playing out or being sublimated on the stage, or playing out also backstage (maybe without a HEA), or the world on the stage and the “real” world bleeding into each other. Maybe Balanchine manipulates them but then the dancers get away from his influence off the stage even if they obey him on it. (I don’t want Balanchine to be at the center of the story – but if you find bringing him in helps the story, that’s great, so long as the focus stays on the dancers.)

Feel free to blend the original cast/making-of story with the more athletic, even acrobatic way Agon is danced today, or focus on the slightly rawer, less hypextended dancing style of the 1950s. Whichever you prefer.

You can find a B&W recording of the pas de deux here, and the recording of the whole ballet is on one of the Balanchine: New York City Ballet in Montreal DVDs. Many other companies have danced Agon since then, there’s a variety of clips on youtube.

 Giselle – Khan/Lamagna

Hilarion (Akram Khan Giselle)

I won’t lie: I prefer this version to any classic Giselle. I was blown away by it on DVD and even more so when I saw it live. I love how it manages to update the story to the modern world in a way which makes sense more than not; I love the rethinking of the characters (especially Giselle and Hilarion); I love the music and the set and especially the group dances; I love the really, genuinely scary wilis…

Hilarion isn’t my favorite in the classic Giselle, but he became my surprise fave in this version. Partly that’s because I love Jeffrey Cirio (whom I saw perform the role live, and he’s in the filmed version’s cast), but partly it’s for how the modern version makes Hilarion this real antihero who veers very close to villainy but then is maybe more pitiful than anything else. I’d love something that focuses on the first act – love those wilis so much, I just don’t want a story about Hilarion’s death or about his being saved/redeemed. Let him be the bastard he is in Act I). So: something that explores his position as this go-between for the “masters” and the migrant workers/refugees – how did he secure that position? What kind of quick thinking (and footwork) does he have to perform to maintain that position? The choreography, the mime, and the symbolism of the hat make clear that the masters find him useful, but they don’t really respect him, and he in turn uses that modicum of power to try to boss around the other migrants, including Giselle. Plus there’s his constant needling of Albrecht, whose secret Hilarion knows and whose girl Hilarion wants (not that this Giselle would likely want to be thought of any man’s girl).

There’s also this Hilarion’s dynamic with this version’s Bathilde, who seems very clear-eyed about Albrecht and Giselle, and there’s that brief moment when Hilarion has the migrants dance for their overlords, when he bows to Bathilde and she acknowledges him. I doubt there’s real respect there – does he want her but also despise her for being so far above him socially? Is she amused and intrigued and maybe a little disgusted by him and her own response to him? Did they ever hook up and this is now a secret one of them can hold over the other, or they keep hooking up and struggling for emotional and social power in that dynamic, or it’s always been this extra snarky, somewhat dark version of, to quote another canon, “Farm boy, do X!” “As you wish.”

This ballet is an original creation for the English National Ballet and has been performed also by the Royal Ballet of Flanders. The DVD is the ENB dancing it, and the same recording should also be available to stream on Marquee TV.

 Jewels – Balanchine/Fauré/Stravinsky/Tchaikovsky

Female Soloist (Diamonds Jewels), Group: Female Soloist/Male Soloist (Diamonds Jewels)

This is just the perfect ballet, one where I love every segment equally, but I always come back to the central pas de deux and especially the ballerina role. I would love a fic that explored some of the undercurrents in her choreography. Her independence and almost teasing of the male soloist, who keeps pursuing her but never quite catches her, even when she lets him support her. At the same time, her regalness (the costume, the Imperial Russia inspiration), aloofness, but again, with a bit of that teasing, playful edge, though she seems to amuse herself much more than she tries to entice the guy, like she won’t accept responsibility for his response to and interest in her. The lady and the unicorn theme present in both the inspiration and in some of her movements – or is the lady herself the unicorn? Is it an updated myth of the unicorn as a symbol of chastity? Finally, her delight in being able to “show off” and set the tone for her whole “court”/ensemble dancing in the finale.

Diamonds has been performed by many companies, both on its own and as part of a full Jewels program. I don’t have a strong preference to any specific cast or version. So far as I know, there’s no full-length recording of NYCB doing it. You can find the pas de deux, adapted for television, danced by Suzanne Farrell and Peter Martins, here, and there are DVDs of Jewels performed by the Mariinsky and the Paris Opera Ballet. (FWIW, of those two, I prefer the Mariinsky’s version.) There’s also a Bolshoi Jewels on youtube, but IMO it’s not that good. There are many short clips of different companies dancing it on youtube.

 Obsidian Tear – McGregor/Salonen

Group: Ensemble (Obsidian Tear), Worldbuilding – Obsidian Tear

For this canon, which is technically plotless but also not really, I’m just really intrigued by the internal dynamics of this all-male group/society. The ballet has clear themes of group v. outsider/individual, as well as how desire can become a tool of power/oppression, violence, but also tenderness in unexpected places. Are these men some post-apocalyptic or fantasy tribe, like gender-flipped Amazons? Is the soloist distinguished by his red pants an actual outsider, in which case what is he doing on their territory and how does he first meet his star-crossed lover? Is his and the other guy’s meeting their first meeting, or are they reconnecting? Is he also a part of the community and has been separated from the others due to… what? Is he supposed to be a sacrifice in some established ritual, Rite of Spring-style, in which case the guy in red has at least an inkling of what’s coming, but then desire causes the preexisting script to play out differently this time? Or is his ultimate fate a result of the group leader’s jealousy? Also what’s the deal with the leader, the one guy who seems to be his BF, and then all the other guys including red-pants’ new lover? What if the leader came up with a different way to punish the wayward lovers than killing one of them? Feel free also to change the ending so the central duo don’t die. I’d also be down for a fic that riffs on the multiple meanings of the title.

You needn’t focus on the entire ensemble, if you’d prefer to write just about two (or three or four) of the guys.

This is a Royal Ballet piece that’s also been performed by the Boston Ballet. There are some short clips as well as a filmed rehearsal floating around on youtube.

Exception to blanket DNW: dubcon is fine for this canon e.g., sex pollen, must have sex as part of a ritual, “made them do it but really gave them their one chance for the sex they couldn’t otherwise have,” someone has to fuck or get fucked by one or more others (maybe while people watch), just so long as no one hates it from start to finish and is totally unaroused.

 The Seasons’ Canon – Pite/Richter

Group: Ensemble (The Seasons' Canon), Worldbuilding – The Seasons' Canon

If I had to pick just one live dance performance to take with me to a desert island, this would be a top contender. I just love everything about it: the styling of the dancers, the movement, the lighting design, the way Max Richter gave Vivaldi a spin… For this canon especially, I’d love something that invokes the whole piece’s mood and is maybe more of a riff/meditation/meta than a story with a clear beginning, plot, and end (though if you come up with a plot, awesome!) Who/what are the dancers? Some post-apocalyptic community? The result of a scientific experiment escaped into the wild? Are they birds? Lizards? Human-animal hybrids? How do the seasons of the title and the music, and suggested by the shifting light, affect their existence as a group? The piece also has a theme about the individual v. the group, in which standing out isn’t necessarily good or beneficial – something exploring that would be great too. Maybe the individual who stands out tries to make sense of their own and their group/community’s existence, and those efforts may or may not do them any favors.

So far as I know, this piece has only been performed by the Paris Opera Ballet. It streamed for a while on ARTE, and the whole recording occasionally pops up on youtube. There are also shorter clips online.

 Woolf Works – McGregor/Richter

All three parts of Woolf Works are so lovely, each in its own way, and part of why I specifically want fic for the middle section is that it’s so abstract and just so darn fun to watch. Yes, it riffs on the one-sentence summary of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, and I find the gender-blurring costumes, the acrobatic choreography (vintage Wayne McGregor!), and the really inventive and very non-Elizabethan lighting design just so beautiful and so intriguing. Is it some weird version of the Elizabethan court? Is it the far future, are they partying in space? Is it a modern-day masked ball and the post-modernism is deliberate? Is it a weird fashion show (someone got high while preparing their final show at fashion school…), is that what the gender-play with the costumes is all about? Is it a competition for whose clothes and moves can be the most “out there” – who picks the winner, and what’s the prize? Is it all someone’s opium- or molly-induced dream? For this canon too, I’d love something that invokes the whole piece’s mood and is maybe more of a riff/meditation/meta than a story with a clear beginning, plot, and end (though if you come up with a plot, awesome!)

This is a Royal Ballet production and has been performed also at La Scala. The RB version is available on DVD and should be on Marquee TV, and there are clips online.
