Hi Elisa! I’ve actually been watching your content for more than a decade, and while I want to congratulate you on your invite to the iwtv premiere, I do think there is some truth to what some of your detractors have said, and a discrepancy on AMC’s part by not inviting any black/POC Content Creators, or sending them screeners. While that may not be your fault or responsibility, the fandom would ask if it would be possible for you to use your platform to bolster their channels, or pass along word from the fandom to AMC that we would like to see more effort and consideration given to black/poc Content Creators who have helped promote this show from the start, as well as reflect its diverse audience, who tuned into a show particularly telling a black narrative about a black lead. I don't have any contacts at AMC or anything, but I do have many twitter/tumblr followers who can see what I share, and am always happy to signal boost!

Do you know if any of these creators have specifically expressed interest in being invited? The event is for 21+ US citizens only, and there's no travel or accommodations provided, just tickets to the event, so they will have to be able to get there themselves. If they're able to do all that, then we can campaign!

For the record, I only have seen three other people say they got invites, but hundreds of people were invited, so here's hoping AMC has already done the right thing and actually did invite plenty of diverse content creators, and we just don't know who they are yet 🤞

If you are interested in discussions about the show, I’ve found the discussions on BlackGayComicGeek’s YouTube channel to be excellent. This stream reviewing and discussing episode 6 was over 3 hours long (I did catch a good chunk of this live) and the discussions are great. They also interact with the live viewers which also brings more interesting discussion about the show.

The writers told us to be prepared to cry in this episode and the entire fandom, myself included, jumped to the worst case scenario and thought someone was gonna die, when in reality, it was this scene between Isaiah and Sam. Because FUCK. It’s some real heavy shit that I did in fact cry about when I watched, and I get teary just thinking about it.

My mom and I like to watch the Reel Rejects react to the episodes, and they brought up a great point. In a scene like that where someone is telling a story, you’d almost expect to cut away to flashback scenes. But it’s so much more powerful just being able to see and hear Carl Lumbly’s performance.

I’m not gonna talk too much the details of what he went through, mostly because as a person who is not black, it doesn’t feel like my place to speak about it in that way. I would encourage any of my followers who have been following these analysis posts of mine, or really anyone who might see this post, to find the black creators on any platform you use speak about it. My personal go-to’s are straw_hat_goofy, nicquemarina, blackgaycomicgeek (he/him), and downwiththemouse (she/they, formerly human_espresso), and they’ve all made their own videos talking about the clear themes of racism in this show. The video straw_hat_goofy made about this scene in particular, he actually gets very emotional because for the past five weeks, whenever he would point out the themes of racism in the show, shitty racist people kept trying to gaslight him and say he was reaching. And I’ll also link the videos about this specific scene made by Kenna (downwiththemouse), blackgaycomicgeek, and nicquemarina.

Static Shock : blackgaycomicgeek / photo : Ginger Sabo

I decided to do a Static cosplay (a lot of people say "Static Shock" because that was the name of the show, but he doesn't go by that in the comics or in the show itself) because I love this character and feel as though he does not get enough love in the comicbook community. He was the first black superhero to star in his own cartoon series. Now we have Vixen on the CW Seed, but even she doesn't get that much play. Her entire season is as long as one episode of "Justice League Unlimited."

Bringing the character to life was pretty easy. The hardest part, being a bald man, was finding a suitable wig. There aren't too many dread wigs out there, but the one I used I think is decent enough. It's definitely time for a new one though lol.

The response at NYCC was awesome. Static was definitely a hit. A lot of people stopped me to take pictures. They were excited to see a Static (Shock) cosplayer. One lady almost cried when she saw me because she loved the cartoon series and funny enough she was white, which goes to show this character, even though he is very important for black people, isn't only for black people.

Cosplay has changed my life in ways I couldn't even imagine. I got to meet so many people I consider friends. It has opened me up to this entire universe of geek culture that I love. Being a black openly gay cosplayer (minority of minorities lol) I've gotten many messages from people saying that I inspired them, and thanked me for just being me, etc. So their messages inspire me. Also cosplaying has allowed me the opportunity to be apart of a weekly podcast (Blerd Vision). So it's been an awesome experience.
