Big thanks to the Dragon Age dev team for doing a signing at SDCC! It was the one thing I was able to attend around schedule conflicts!!

I did not ask any leading questions about the game, just gushed how much I love the series, the world the characters, and as a Solavellen truther I expect to be face down in the dirt one way or another by the end.

I want to be clear that I am NOT defending QJL one itty bitty bit. He was one hundred percent responsible for his unambiguously evil actions. But it is weird to me that there is pushback against explorations of his character. In the Scum Villain fandom, of all places, by fans of a child abuser.

If all we knew of Shen Jiu was what was seen in PIDW, we would not be seeing him in a much better light than QJL. On the one hand, I don't think SJ owned slaves. On the other hand, he was a grown ass man while QJL was a teenager. Not sure how those factors weigh against each other, but the fact remains: much of what PIDW readers would have seen of SJ would have been unambiguously evil actions for which he was fully responsible.*

Like. Nature vs nurture and the cycle of abuse are central fucking themes in SVSSS. It is not even a little bit subtle about it.

Slavery is inexcusable. It is also widely normalized within the setting. Child abuse is inexcusable. It is also widely normalized within the setting. They are both widespread, normalized societal evils that perpetuate cycles of abuse. (SJ even says that it's likely for slaves to become slavers. Like, pretty much outright.) There are so many more parallels throughout the book comparing QJL to SJ to LBG, as well as parallels between QHT and NYY.

The themes here could not be more overt if MXTX tried. She repeatedly smacks the reader in the face with this shit.

It is not unreasonable to speculate that QJL also had reasons for being scum. If you're a SJ fan, I really fucking hope you know a reason is not an excuse.

You don't have to be interested in the exploration of a fictional villain. It's just really fucking weird to judge a handful of other people for doing so in the fucking Scum Villain's Self Saving System fandom. Like really.

*Some of you may claim that QJL was also a rapist, which is not an unreasonable interpretation, but it is not strictly canon. It is, however, all but overtly stated that SQH believed SQQ to be a virgin. Given the context, I interpreted this as believing SJ was a virgin. SY also seemed to think he was referring to SJ.
