Snape Asks response 1

I received a question from @utterlybyrone, regarding @bloatsome’s Snape Ask list. And I shall answer it!

The ask from Anon was: “I have so many Snape Asks I'd like to see you answer, but let's start with those: 10., 17., 50.”

So let’s do this. (just in case, T/W: mentions of ab*se, b*llying, tr*uma, t*rture). 

10. Do you think Snape’s character has changed the way you think/feel about others?

Yes. Maybe not changed, but contributed to the way I think. Why? In my view Severus can teach us that a little kindness and good listening from others (and from you), as well as remorse and forgiveness, can go a really long way when it comes to making you a better person and keeping you from going down a dark path in life. Snape’s character inspired me to read books such as On Being Nice, and You’re Not Listening, and The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read. There are a lot of lessons on the consequences of tr*uma and b*llying that Snape’s character can teach readers. I know that Snaters tend to say “okay but what about poisoning Trevor the Toad,” and “what about his treatment of Neville,” and also “ew why was he so obsessed with Lily,” and “why did he choose Lily over Harry and James.” But if you look past those arguments and you just analyse what happened to Severus as a character, you start to see the extent to which his upbringing and life in general were just sh*t. I mean to start off, he grew up in an almost loveless household (Eileen clearly cared for him but couldn’t do so as freely as she would have liked) with a definitely not very nice father, and a mother who was also a v*ctim in that regard. And sadly, that is the case for so many people in the world, which is heartbreaking in itself, because a lot of what is in Snape’s upbringing is the reality for many people. It’s terrible. But to make things even worse, when Snape finally went to a place where he was special and his magic (i.e. skills and abilities) had value in the community, he ended up getting chased around by a bunch of b*llies and made fun of for his looks, and physically hurt, and called names, etc. His complex and difficult past and his feeling of being an outcast made him make even worse choices in the end (i.e. joining the Death Eaters out of spite and desperation). And teenagers say terrible things when they’re humiliated or hurt, which explains why he called Lily that word (it doesn’t justify it, but it explains it). I think his character mainly just taught me that you never know what kind of crap someone is dealing with in their life, and that you should treat them with understanding as far as it’s possible (and within reason). Because in the end it could change their life. I think also it made me focus even harder on how I interact with shy/timid/socially anxious people (because Snape gives me very much ‘I don’t like social situations’ vibes). I think it’s important to help people feel safe around you. I think Snape didn’t have much of that in his life; instead he had a lot of betrayal and got teased for finding social situations difficult. Also, Snape shows, at least for me, how loyalty (as long as it’s not obsession) is a really powerful trait in life, and it makes people trust you more. Sticking to your commitments is important in life and it’s really hard to find truly loyal people these days, who you can count on to be there for you, who don’t ghost you and aren’t flakes. People with attention spans whose eyes don’t glaze over when they should be listening to you. I think Snape taught me to look for ‘commitment' as a trait in other people. Those are my thoughts.

17. Do you think Snape was unhappy even after joining the DEs?

Absolutely. If we consider that Severus’s motivations were misplaced (he thought he’d have power by joining and instead he got pain on so many levels), and that the driving emotions he was experiencing at the time of initiation were hurt, humiliation, anger and desperation, then we can assume that the ride was rocky from the start. 

When he joined, he was looking for somewhere where he would have a circle of people like him, but in the end, he wasn’t like the DEs at all. He wasn’t a Pureblood fanatic or Pureblood agenda sympathizer, he was on the side of Muggleborns since the moment he met Lily and realized not all Muggleborns were like his father. But as a Halfblood, he didn’t belong with the Death Eaters. He probably lived in fear that someone he didn’t want ‘in the know’ would find out his blood status. I doubt that he ever felt secure in his position of favor with Lord Moldy-Shorts, either. 

Also, can we address Occlumency? I would think that the guy would be blocking out any emotion, almost constantly, after joining the DEs. If you’re hanging out with people like Bella Lestrange and Pettigrew on a daily basis, you’d need to block out some stuff. But he’d realistically have to compartmentalize, either way. He’d lock ‘happy’ emotions in one box, safely away, for review at a later date. Any pain or nightmares or horrible experiences would go in another box. His mind would have to be constantly blank or filled with well-placed fake memories. 

Plus, I’m guessing nothing much was happening in his life that could be called “happy,” except when he became Draco’s godfather. 

Oh yeah, and the whole Betraying The Potters thing would probably have rained on his parade. We all know he was miserable after that. The guilt from that event alone, even if it was Pettigrew who betrayed their location to Voldy, stayed with Snape for the rest of his life. 

The DEs started out as his way to ‘get back at’ all the people who had done him wrong. They were also his shelter and refuge for a bit, or at least the Malfoys were. But it didn’t take long for his time at the DEs to go from a fleeting power trip to a really nightmarish existence. I don’t think he was happy, no.

50. Had Snape lived, would he continue teaching at Hogwarts?

Mmmmm this is tricky. Yes and no. 

Look at it this way: for the better part of a year, the guy was playing dress up as a Death Eater while also being Headmaster of a school (appointed illegitimately to the role by the leader of a t*rrorist club). In order not to blow his cover, he had to facilitate, or at least turn a blind eye to, the t*rture and punishment of his own students that he’d spent so many years protecting and teaching. 

Plus, Severus had to deal with the looks of betrayal from McGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout, Vector, and Pomfrey (and more) on a daily basis - people who, even if he wouldn’t necessarily call them friends, were at least civil with him in the past. And if he went back he’d doubt that any of them would ever really trust him again, even with his hero status and Order of Merlin - if we assume he’d get one if he lived.

So overall Hogwarts was the site where he got b*llied as a student, then it became the environment where he repeatedly was denied the position of DADA teacher and the place where he had to keep students from exploding themselves along with their cauldrons, then it became the place where he basically had to just let his students get hurt by DEs. (And sending students to Hagrid wasn’t enough. He should have done more. What he did was really bad.)

He wouldn’t go back to Hogwarts of his own volition, no. He’d feel completely wracked with guilt and unworthy to teach there after what he allowed to happen on his watch, Spy Cover or no Spy Cover. I think he’d only go back to teach if Hogwarts staff and students made it clear he was welcome. Even then, I doubt he’d accept. More likely he’d set up an apothecary or start a private apprenticeship or potions business.

That being said, Hogwarts tends to feel like home for everyone who went there. Maybe if he felt nostalgic enough, or had someone at Hogwarts waiting for him who made it worth it, he might go back. But otherwise I think his feelings of guilt and sense of honesty and honor would compel Severus to stay away.

I think my username is pretty much self-explanatory for Severus Snape fans. A repeatedly mentioned feature of Severus’ appearance throughout the HP series was his long, billowing black cloak. That cloak billowing behind him gave him a such a dramatic appearance when he walked and I just love that. His black aesthetic was on point. I mean look at him, what a swagger!

3 - Which Disney character, according to you is most like Snape?

I do not watch nearly enough Disney to make a sound choice to be quite honest but if I HAD to choose one, I think it would be Maleficent. She was misunderstood and just wanted to be included. Had she been included and treated with kindness I don’t think she would have turned into what she did or did what she did and I think that falls true for Severus as well.

4 - Do you think Snape remained a virgin?

We don’t hear really about the sex lives of anyone in the series we just know from those who had children that they aren’t virgins. However, I find it very unlikely Severus remained a virgin. Personally, I think he tried sleeping around at some of the death eaters suggestion, but I don’t think he particularly enjoyed it and eventually just remained to himself.

19 - According to you, what is Snape's biggest flaw?

This is truly a tough one. He is very flawed, and I love him for that. I thought about this for a while and it’s probably a toss-up of his poor judgement of others and their intentions or the inability to let go of a grudge. (I’m guilty of this too)

These both obviously stem from trauma. Severus definitely has the “fool me once but never again” mindset. If you wrong him one time he would never forgive you, which is immature, but it’s also a form of self-preservation. Yet, he will still rely on and trust people who are “fooling him” but just behind his back. It’s sad because people who do these things are easily manipulated by people who don’t have their best interest in mind.

imma answer these questions by @bloatsome​ but i’ll try to do it in sets of 5. if you’re interested, my answers will be under the cut!

Do you have a snOTP? What is it?

- to be honest...not really? i like him as is, so any partner that people pair him with (by this i refer to pairings in fics; drawings are fair game) is a pleasant bonus. i do have preferences for pairings though, but it’s not saying much, because i will read anything and everything as long as the plot interests me. that said, here are some of the pairings i enjoy and why:

snucius - i love this pairing because it shows both lucius’ and snape’s humanity but without the sickly sweet sentiment that’s often in the other pairings. i love the idea that both have such small exclusive circles, and anyone within them are definitely people they would die for. their snarkiness is also top-notch

snamione - this pairing grew on me. when i was younger, it wasn’t something that interested me, but then i read the fics. this pairing is tenacious, fiercely intelligent, and loyal to a fault. it’s like snape having a female version of himself for a partner, which is always a treat. hermione never lets him step on her, but she also provides the balance he often needs

snupin - again something which grew on me. i love the moments in fic when they confront their shared past and lupin more or less gets eviscerated for his poor choice of friends, but they try to work on it afterwards, and that’s great

snack - this is such a volatile pairing which is why i love it XD i don’t seek it out though because more often than not having both sirius and snape on the same page gives me unnecessary stress, but the fights are usually well-written and it’s satisfying when they finally get to that middle ground of finally becoming agreeable with each other

snily - tbh it’s very rare for me to find a snily fic i agree with but when they’re good, they’re good (deathdaydungeon’s Dealer is one of them). with snily, i love that they have a shared childhood, and so she has access to a side of snape no one else does. that alone makes the pairing so interesting for me, and worth a read

What do you think is Snape’s favorite colour and why?

- i read this question and oddly enough, only one color came to mind: yellow. yellow in the same way van gogh loved yellow: because it’s happiness personified, and happiness was something he lacked. he never wears the color, but he probably had small items in the shades that calmed him for when he’s feeling particularly stressed.

Which Disney character, according to you is most like Snape?

- hm. i’m not sure tbh. he doesn’t really fit the usual cookie cutter types disney tends to churn out. his sense of humor reminds me of yzma (emperor’s new groove) but his self-serving tendencies also reminds me of gothel (tangled). bagheera (the jungle book) is protective but is too mild to be him.

Do you think Snape remained a virgin?

- i don’t think so, because even if he chose not to partake in that sort of activity, i believe the death eaters would have made that choice for him at some point and he’d have been forced into it. that kind of cult would have had no bounds on its depravity and would have surely demanded that sort of thing from its followers, and he would have had to follow suit. on another note, it’s possible he also could have actively sought it out himself as a channel for his rage and other intense emotions. inasmuch as i can understand others’ preference of him being a virgin, it doesn’t make sense to me given the context he was in. 

Do you think Snape ever loved anyone other than Lily, romantically or platonically?

- i believe so; he wasn’t a robot. i believe he loved his co-teachers, dumbledore, and even his students to a certain extent, whether he consciously allowed himself to or not. love comes and is expressed in many forms. in terms of a partner though...i sincerely doubt he had any time or emotional bandwidth for a romantic dalliance. but platonic love...i’m pretty sure he had loved lucius and narcissa at least, and cared for them in his own way. lily though was special and nobody had probably attained the same level that she had been on for snape.

@bloatsome makes good arguments about the hp fandom in a way I think arguments in general can learn from. She can make you go "hmm I never thought of that".

Otherwise being rather unversed in Harry Potter lore (even after having read every book and watched every movie, some more than once, shame on me), I got to learn more about the story than I remember I knew.

As a result of my interest, tumblr has to come to show me other hp fandom accounts too and guess which one I like the most. Thats right. I stan you, @bloatsome.

What type of Villain would I be?

Sadistic Bastard

The type of guy who'll break you down emotionally by giving you false hope only to snatch it away in an instant. And then proceeds to torture you physically thereby conditioning you to expect pain whenever he or she is in your presence. The kind of Man who'll revel in the emotional degradation of men and women and attains pleasure by seeing the empty husk of what they used to be. Will test their new found "Loyality" by making them do horrible things but in reality it's a reminder that "It can always get worse". And when they've expended their usefulness I'll release them from their binds only to hunt them down with my new slaves.

what type of villain would you be ?

narrative foil

you are the perfect opposite of the hero in most aspects, including your morals. in others, you seem more like their mirror, a twisted reflection. you complement each other. you are the yang to their yin, the moon to their sun. in some other life you could’ve been friends. fanfiction would say even soulmates. you could say your relationship with them is a little bit fruity. “you and i are not so different after all” you tell the hero… as you’re dangling them off the roof. you are evil, after all. you’ll probably die very dramatically by their hand but in a very unintentionally homoerotic way, so it’s a win some, lose some kind of situation

hey what do you think about stanning (idk if its the correct word) both marauders and snape together I want stuff like that its usually people who hate severus are marauder lovers and people who hate marauders and severus lovers?? I mean i like them both equally and i also like good romances in the marauders era like fralice and dorlene ?? I don't ship jily nor snily(Snily platonically) nor do i ship w*lfstar I hate those weird ships whats ur opinion? ps i love ur replies to snaters!!

I'm sure along with me, many, many members of the snapedom like both the Marauders and Snape, but 95% of marauders' stans basically spend half their time bashing Snape rather than concentrating on their faves. I only hate the Marauders because of their stans otherwise I find them to be interesting characters.

And I'm completely fine with all marauder era ships! (except jily) but istg w*lfstar fans are just....ugh.

I tried looking for some blogs who don't hate Snape or the Marauders but I couldn't find many, here are some quality blogs I did find, however:

@once-upon-an-imagine (they post imagines, as you can guess), @wingedcorgi (they illustrate both the marauders and snape) and some of my amazing mutuals @snapeingturtle @wh0reforthemarauders @billcwingcloaks who love both the Marauders and Snape!!
