Harmonia the Siren

Harmonia appears as an attractive woman with pale green skin and long, dark green hair as well as amber eyes, gill slits, and webbed fingers and toes. She’s also Deaf. Because of her deafness, Harmonia communicates with her siren and merfolk friends through sign language and never uses her siren song to lure sailors overboard.

Harmonia cultivates a garden of bioluminescent aquatic plants (composed entirely of species hitherto unknown to human science) which she grows in the deep sea. Most sirens are coastal and live in relatively shallow water, so Harmonia is one of the few sirens to make friends with anglerfish, goblin sharks, and blobfish in those species’ preferred environment. Although you can’t go down that deep with her, Harmonia uses a magical camera that can withstand the pressure and water to take pictures of her plants. She makes stickers out of them with the help of some human friends so that you can add them to your collection.

Harmonia loves to eat and try new foods. Once you introduce her to terrestrial foods, she’s hooked, and always down to lounge on the beach with you for a seaside picnic. She respects that you aren’t the biggest seafood fan and will eagerly watch cooking shows on YouTube and TikTok with you on your phone. 

She teaches you sign language to communicate with her, and is always super attentive to your body language. If you’re uncomfortable with something, she knows it, and she’s careful to never cross your boundaries. 

Harmonia’s siren and merfolk friends are very curious about you, and once you’re introduced to them all they welcome you happily. If you ever go swimming in the ocean, there will always be someone watching to make sure you don’t drift out too far or get caught in a riptide.

When you first click “follow” on the blog harmonia-pelagic on Tumblr, you initially think the blogger is a human diver or unmanned submersible operator—and likely also some kind of marine biologist—due to the depth (ha) of knowledge on display. The blogger makes very thorough educational posts about deep sea flora and fauna, and responds gently and kindly to other accounts that express revulsion at the strangeness of undersea life. There are no selfies.

After a few reblogs of harmonia-pelagic’s content with some nice tags, the blogger follows you back! You’re elated, and after a few exchanges of nice messages you settle into a steady, warm correspondence. You learn that Harmonia is Deaf, uses she/her pronouns but feels conflicted about identifying with terminology associated with rigid, human ideas of gender roles, and really likes growing aquatic plants. You get daily pictures of strange, bioluminescent flora and marine fungi that don’t use photosynthesis to remain alive.

When you visit a coastal town for a friend’s wedding, Harmonia reveals that she’s also in the area and invites you to meet her on the beach to watch the sunrise with her. You agree, and set extra alarms to make sure you don’t miss anything.

The pre-dawn light is gray and soft when you arrive on the beach, and the soft murmur of waves lapping against the shore and the distant crying of gulls are the only sounds. You see a figure with long, dark green hair sitting just below the waterline, the foam from the waves seeming to form a lacy skirt about her waist every few moments before receding back into the ocean. Instead of calling her name, you approach from the side so that she can see you coming in her peripheral vision. 

Harmonia waves with a webbed hand and excitedly signs, “hello!” to you. You repeat the sign back to her, and she smiles and shyly shows you the name-sign she devised for you: a combination of the first letter of your name alongside the signs for “ocean” and “friend.” You sign a thank-you and sit next to her, allowing the cool saltwater to flow around your bathing suit with each landward rush of the sea. 

The sunrise is exceptionally clear and beautiful today, exactly like the “rosy-fingered dawn” that the Greek poets wrote about so long ago. The colors painting the clouds along the eastern horizon are so vibrant and beautiful you feel as though, if you stretched out your hand to the sky, then your fingers would come away stained with brilliant, rosy light. You feel a pressure on your hand in the sand, and look down to see Harmonia covering your own hand with hers. She grins at you, her cheeks darkening slightly with a blush.

“I’m really happy right now,” she signs to you when the sun has cleared the horizon and the morning has properly begun. 

“I’m happy too,” you sign back, and you mean it.

The Soup Of My Life

a short story written based on the following stimulus by Shaun Tan

Soon, it would be ready soon. They just needed to add the final ingredients and it would be complete. Months had passed since he had embarked on this journey, they had slain giant beasts beyond their comprehension, learnt the ancient ways of farming. Hed spent hours upon hours, days upon days hammering away until what was once a chunk of shapeless ore resembled more of a spoked wheel than the chunk of metal he began with. And finally, after so long, it was almost ready, they just needed to add the final ingredient, the secret ingredient to make anything better. Love. They had collected a box full of their most personal belongings, things that he held great sentimental value for, they would have the best effect. First, a childhood stuffed animal, Bonk as she had been named, she was a lanky bunny given to them when they were 4 as a birthday present from their best friend and namesake, of course that was before the accident. He missed her dearly. Second was a gold star, this wasn’t just any gold start though, this was the first gold star sticker they had ever received. He was so proud that day, went around showing it off to all their friends, it was a nice memory. Hed gotten it for drawing the best picture of a deep sea blobfish out of the entire class, the drawing had disappeared over the years, lost to time, but the sticker stayed, the sticker always stayed. And into the pot it went. The last item  was a small red, bouncy ball. This ball represented everything that had ever gone wrong in his life. They'd been playing with it when they heard about Bonk, they were chasing after it when they ran past their parents room and overheard them arguing, after that day 3 had turned to 2. and the ball itself had been responsible for the worst of all, it had been an accident, truly, but maybe if he'd had listened, if only he'd have listened when his mum told him to put the ball away or played with it somewhere away from the kitchen. But of course, being a kid who thought they knew better than their parents, they hadn't. They'd kept playing, making a few close catches before finally and disastrously, the ball shot off one wall, hit the floor and then aimed straight for the bottle of oil near the stove, hitting it and knocking it straight into the fire, exploding into an inferno of light and heat. Somehow he'd made it out relatively unscathed, his mum wasn’t so lucky. They try not to think about too often, maybe this was for the best, good things never came from this ball it was time to get rid of it. And feeling as if they had a huge weight lifted off their shoulders, they tossed in the ball, and closed the lid. 

Now it was time to wait. 

Two hours later, it was time. This was it, months and months of effort and time and work, a lifetime of experiences, the culmination of it all lay resting in this pot. Grabbing a bowl, they collected a portion and took a sip. Raising his hand to an ok gesture, they said the first thing to come to mind,  

"good soup"

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

@Bogleech Box! Let's break it down.

We'll start with some GeneriCo stuff. One of the final Eyeducks leads the charge, flanked by a pair of remarkably well-done rubber bats. Seriously, I have quite a collection, and these blow most of them out of the water. Bone Merfolk are always fun, and I can't argue with the sticky skeleton hands. Their bulbous fingertips imply a wacky wall-walker function, or perhaps some manner of mutation. Morbid Monster and GHS cards are getting to be quite a pile at this point.

Toys and game pieces consist of a pair of Creepy Freaks minis, a Worm On A String in a lovely purple, two glow bugs (including a caterpillar, which is just unusual enough to feel special), a plastic witch of unknown provenance, and a Junk Germ (?) in a jar of green putty. Far superior to the usual slime in that it doesn't dry out very quickly. Edit: forgot the tiny Ultraman villain.

Special mention goes to the oddly Playmobil-esque SCP-173, almost certainly unlicensed, but super fun in bubblegum pink. The baseball cards are from one of a few very similar sets I have problems differentiating, but once again, more for the stack.

Dude went nuts with the Flat Fun this time: 4 shiny bugs, 4 sheets of GeneriCo ghosts and monsters, a 3d spider making out with a disembodied eyeball, and a generous 4 Junji Ito stickers. Oh, and a sizeable raven window cling. Because somehow I still have windows around here that aren't Halloween enough.

Final batch is mostly Arts: another Dr. Decay, 4 pins (Happy Healthy Blobfish was hiding under the table when I set up this shot), and a kickass haunted tree. The Fake Chocolate Monsters actually came with their cocoon this time, the better to fool humans. Actually got a double, with a worm and a disturbingly stumpy baby. And since they don't want to stand up, here's a better shot of the skull-spiders.

Metal as hell, and also actual metal. Also, I just noticed that while the ghosts and bat are hanging from the branches with sculpted ropes, due to the crude nature of the sculpt, it looks more like the tree is exasperatedly carrying them back home after catching them someplace they shouldn't be. Regular Ghost is remorseful, but Pumpkin Ghost regrets nothing.

Another fine selection of specially curated findings (or whatever the current pretentious term is; Bog usually just says things like "two scoops of monsters") from the personal stock of the inimitable Bogleech.
