Hello! So sorry to bother, but have you had any updates on the Word-Stream/Speechify situation?

Just one: like I posted on Xitter and Bluesky last night, as of yesterday afternoon, the links to individual works as they were listed on WordStream are gone from both Google and Bing. Hurray, right? Surely we’re all sick of this whole debacle and there’s far more important things to worry about. If all is well that ends well, surely there’s no need to still be angry.

Well, I am. Here’s why:

When I checked on Wednesday, the links to my own work on WordStream were still listed. So rather than it taking a week after Cliff Weitzman first hid the fanwork from view, it took a little over a week from the moment he first promised privately that they would be deleted. Which, fine. Perhaps Cliff didn’t really know what he was talking about when he gave that timeframe. Or maybe he told a little white lie to create the impression that he always intended to do the right thing. It seems more likely to me, though, that Cliff still believed—even after the backlash he received—that he would get away with honoring only individual takedown requests. Or worse, that he needed just a little bit more time with the stolen material to figure out an alternative way to profit off it—preferably without us noticing, this time.

But who knows? I certainly don’t! All we can do is speculate, because publicly, Cliff Weitzman has remained completely silent on his copyright infringements. All we got was the initial justifications he and his sockpuppet accounts used in comments on the original Reddit and Tumblr posts. After those were so understandably ill-received, Cliff only ever communicated with a few individual authors who contacted him directly and repeatedly, blocking people who addressed the issue on Twitter and quietly distancing himself from WordStream by deleting a blog he’d posted to Speechify.com dated December 20th—where Cliff promoted WordStream’s platform specifically to fanfiction readers. (See my enormous timeline post for details and screenshots of said posts before they were taken down.)

And this is why I’m still angry: As long as Cliff Weitzman faces no real consequences for his actions, he won’t see a need to own up to his mistake; and as long as he’s able to delay taking responsibility, this isn’t over. This didn’t end well.

After all, wasn’t this the next-best scenario for Cliff, second only to him turning WordStream into a (for him) effortless, infinite money-making machine? He took something we provided for free and fed it to AI so he could more easily put it behind a paywall; we found out and protested; Cliff quietly erased all evidence of his crime; and we went—almost equally quietly—away.

I want to make sure you know that I continue to be genuinely amazed and intensely grateful for how quickly the news about WordStream’s copyright infringement was shared—and continues to be shared—throughout fandom, on tumblr in particular. If it hadn’t been for our collective outcry here and on Reddit, WordStream would very likely still be up in its original form, and Weitzman would be reaping the benefits (those subscription prices were steep) today.

But it’s been frustrating to see that, with the exception of mentions in articles on Substack and Fansplaining (the latter of which is a particularly awesome and thorough read on fandom’s decontextualization) and a Fanlore listing, our outrage never really spilled out beyond the safely insulated, out-of-the-way spaces that are tumblr, a handful of subreddits and bluesky. And I believe that—unfortunately—we are collectively responsible for that part, as well.

Most of us seemed content to only spread the word by circulating the same two posts on tumblr. (Have we all given up completely on every other social media platform? Am I the only remaining straggler?) And soon after Cliff Weitzman hid WordStream’s fanfiction category from view, our interest in the issue took a sharp dive even there. Are we genuinely deceived into believing the issue has been fully resolved? Do we truly fail to realize that Weitzman’s refusal to admit that what he did was wrong left the door wide open for the next greed-driven tech bro to wander through? Or is the true naivety in thinking that, as a community, we can keep this kind of attack on fandom from happening again? Has our disillusionment already gotten that bad?

However the situation spins out from here, Cliff’s actions will set a precedent. If we fail to show Cliff and his ilk that attempts to profit off fandom’s unpaid labor have consequences, their tech companies will keep trying until something eventually sticks. They might be a little smarter about it next time; obscure their sources a bit better, maybe leave the titles and the authors’ names off. Or maybe they’ll go a bolder route: maybe next time they cross the line they’ll do it boldly enough for IP holders to take notice and stop tolerating fanwork entirely.

Doesn’t that make you angry, too?

There’s this whole other mess of thoughts I would love to be able to untangle about how commercial influence is contributing to the steady erosion of fandom’s foundations, but I’m tired, and other people have said it all much more eloquently than I ever could. Seriously, go read that article on Fansplaining. Or listen to the podcast version of it. Better yet, as long as you’re wearing your noise-canceling headphones, go listen to a podfic of one of your favorite fandoms’ works, and enjoy the collaborative joy and creativity of the people who Cliff Weitzman refuses to believe exist. (In one of Speechify’s other blogs, Cliff claims there are only 272 podfics on AO3. Would you like to run that ChatGPT prompt again, Cliff?). Honestly, much like Cliff Weitzman’s infuriating denial of the fact that fandom fucking has this covered, thank you very much, there’s so. Many. More. Things for us to talk about. There’s the connotations of WordStream’s dubious ‘upload’ button, for instance, or the fact that the app scraped (and in some cases, allegedly, still lists) copyright-protected original fiction as well, or WordStream’s complete lack of contact information, which is illegal for an internationally operating app. And oh! Has anyone reported more thoroughly on Cliff’s app’s options to ‘simplify’ or ‘modernize’ uploaded works, or—my own very favorite abomination—to translate them into something Cliff calls ‘Gen-Z Language’? Much like his atrocious AI book covers, it would be hilarious, if it didn’t make steam come out of my ears.

Anyway, there it is. I highly recommend you do all of that. And then, if you aren’t familiar with it already, go do some research re: fair use and your rights as the copyright owner of your works. A good number of people commenting on this controversy expressed stunned surprise or fearful hesitation about claiming any sort of ownership of their fanfiction. The more informed we are about our rights, the more willing we will be to defend them.

Please don’t stop writing or sharing your work. If you can’t bring yourself to work on your WIPs today (trust me, I get it), post about this situation instead. Tweets, skeets, whateverthefucks—about WordStream’s theft, about how this reflects on Speechify’s already shady business practices, about how Cliff’s actions and justifications have personally affected you. You’re welcome to share or copy my posts on these platforms, but since Cliff already blocked me, I very much prefer you post your own. If you do, call Cliff Weitzman by his full name and tag or include both WordStream and Speechify to ensure Weitzman will recognize he has both a personal as well as a professional stake in handling the situation with integrity. Leave your concerns in reviews on the Speechify app. (We weren’t provided with a more appropriate place to put them, after all!) Consider calling for a Speechify boycott until Cliff accepts accountability for his actions.

Do avoid making exaggerated claims, and don’t call for physical retaliation against Cliff’s person or his property. We don’t want to give him or Speechify even the weakest of grounds to claim defamation or threats of violence. Focus on the facts: they’re incriminating enough by themselves. Show Cliff that we’re determined to keep bringing up his company’s wrongdoings in public spaces until he demonstrates that he understands why taking these freely shared fanworks and monetizing them was wrong, and takes steps to ensure it won’t happen again.

One last thing—and this is really more of a general reminder—please stop suggesting I handle this situation for you. People have come to me asking for action items. The resulting flashbacks to my days as an office assistant were extremely upsetting. In all seriousness, casting me as some sort of coordinator or driving force behind this backlash actively hurts the cause. Not only does it downplay fandom’s collective efforts, it also makes our message extremely vulnerable. It would be all too easy for Cliff to silence one singular source. Wikipedia will not maintain mentions of this controversy as long as it leads only to Easter Kingston’s attempt to summarize what happened as it was happening. You only know my name because I stumbled upon WordStream’s theft and decided to get my friends involved. I am not more knowledgeable, more skilled or more angrily invested in this issue than you are (or can, or should, be). I draw pictures and I write stories and I worry about the shift I’m seeing in fandom after having been on this ride for even a few pre-livejournal rounds.

I’m not going to stop doing any of those things. But I am going to allow myself to step away for a bit, make my wife dinner, and catch up on our shows.

im going to be vulnerable again for a moment. risky move considering the internet and being harassed right now, but i value being transparent above all else

it stresses me out not knowing what the two anons were talking about. claiming i accused an anon of grooming? where did i say that?? i mentioned it in the first ask where anon 1 flipped out. i re-read my response at least 30 times now. i have NO clue where they got that i called them a groomer from. i only definitively said two things: scuttles was fetishmining, and anon keeps bringing up personal experiences to talk down to me.

this is where my initial assumption that anon 1 is scuttles comes back. i want to believe them when they said they're not them, but here's my issue. two days before yesterday they applied to the zine. i noticed and blocked them on bluesky, since i had completely forgotten to. i blocked them already on the tumblr. then, wouldn't you know it, two days after that application, i get a vile, angry ask bringing up them and the babystar AU again. just like how they did in screenshots ive seen where they went around in a discord fearmongering about me. then, when i say scuttles is fetishmining and ask that i am not compared to gin, they freak out and accuse me of saying they're grooming. i never directed ANY accusation like that to anon. to me, this means despite saying they're not scuttles, it's incredibly likely that they are. i already knew it was in that circle, but still. it lines up with how aggressive they got when i privately asked respectfully to please use nsfw tags. immediately got defensive, accused me of things i didn't do, etc. to me, this makes sense.

i did block the anon, but they obviously negated that block. that's why i really wish i knew DEFINITIVELY who it was, because in the case that im wrong, i can block. however, they still may be circumventing via incognito tab or signing out. obviously, the safe move for me would be to turn off anon. i harken back to "i get more kind anons than harassment," which IS true! it's why im so hesitant. ive had majorly good experiences with having anon on. i don't want to risk people not coming forward to me with their personal stories, because genuinely? that means THE WORLD to me. to know people understand my POV, that they trust me to be kind to them in a vulnerable state. it makes me feel honored each and every time. arguably, the anon can just make an alt account, too... granted, it's much harder than opening incognito, but still.

i feel pressured to answer these asks because im open to being criticized. i have made mistakes, and i will always make them. i want to be open to being told if i hurt someone. ive previously been accused of "ignoring criticism" which is why i bother giving these asks even a second on my blog. i know i don't have to answer them, especially when they're very inflammatory. i can't help but feel like i need to, especially when theyre lying about me or claiming i did things i never did. if you're neurodivergent, ESPECIALLY autistic, im sure you understand being accused of lying when you're not, or people spreading things about you. it's oddly common against neurodivergent folk...

I love to draw and talk about things that I very much enjoy! My art varies between fanart and original work, though I am not sure if I’ll upload all my original work in this account. 🤷🏽‍♂️ I love drawing: Monsters, Body horror, Worldbuilding type of work, Gay content, Cute shit, Ugly shit, Toony shit—that’s all I can name on the top of my head lmao.

I am planning to make commissions in the future but I am currently trying to figure it out in a way.

Like what I want to do as for commissions and what I am allow to do.

This means that when I do commissions, it will be through money.

Which means there are rare moment for stuff for free.

But I am trying to figure it out still like, what do I do as an acceptable approach. Like " I am selling. Adoptable, pinup and such."

And have an area for the prices

I do want it to be online only since I am not familiar with the physical idea of it, where you print out the stuff and ship it out to people.

I use cash app for personal reasons and have my personal name on it, but a lot of sites do paypal.

I might have to do a 2nd account or create a second account on the cash app for business purposes and use kofi.

I am still at the planning ideas right now.

I had someone come up to me privately and request 3 artwork and am willing to pay, but I didn't have stuff set for that. I am gonna look around to others as inspiration to see how they do it. Patreon is cool, but I really have a cash app for easy access.

That's the idea I have in mind. But i think I know what prices I want now as I type through here. Like 2 being the cheapest and 2 being bit out of certain people's range and 1 with average of the average prices. Or something different. I am still thinking.

I want to be prepared and have fun. And open to commissions when needed. Close them when they are needed to.

I am rambling here, but you know. I do need to improve some of them to actually work for later. But yeah.

Let's Get Social

It’s hard to believe a world without social media. For the vast majority of my students, who are Gen-Zers, you have known nothing else. Social media is a major part of what it means to be a digital native. My older students, who are primarily Millennials but with a handful of Xers, had to adapt. And my tribe, the Boomers, all had the same look on our faces when we first encountered them: What dis?

The first social network I joined was Twitter, back in 2008, which means I wasn’t exactly an early adopter, but I didn’t wait terribly long. That would put me in the Early Majority. Twitter launched in July 2006, two years after Facebook, which originally was a private network that expanded through Ivy League schools, then eventually all universities, and finally everyone. Before that there were MySpace, Friendster, and a couple of others that have vanished from the collective memory.

Networks come, and networks go. We have seen the rise of SnapChat and the explosive growth of TikTok, but also witnessed others struggle and even go away. Anyone remember YikYak? BeReal has attempted to rise above the din of staged photos by prompting users to shoot unscripted selfies at random times…a novel idea, but one that just hasn’t taken off yet.

And then there is the very real consumer trend we are witnessing right now with yet another mass exodus from X, formerly Twitter, the social site owned by Elon Musk. How anyone could squander more than $40 billion in market cap and still be able to blow it off as pocket change is the kind of thing only the world’s richest people could fathom.

Which he has.

Unless you missed the Presidential election campaign, Musk buddied up with Donald Trump, donated millions, and has now been guaranteed an important position in Washington. Thanks to the politically divisive nature of things these days, and the fact that Musk has turned X into a haven for the far Right, millions of long-time users are finding their ways to the exit. It’s the second such exodus, the first happening immediately after Musk bought it in April 2022.

It is a shame that social media have come to this, but here we are. Upstart sites Threads and Bluesky are experiencing surges in new users, all Twitter/X ex-pats. These two sites were launched to be alt-Twitter sites in the first place, and now they are growing.

Threads is a spin-off from Instagram, which is owned by Meta, the parent of Facebook and also WhatsApp. It debuted in July 2023, and enjoyed a meteoric rise right out of the gate. I joined within the first three hours, and still have a user number in the three million range. Today, there are 257 million monthly users, with one million new users a day for the last three months.

Bluesky launched in October 2021, but was invite-only until early this year. It was developed by Jack Dorsey, one of Twitter’s founders. It now has 16 million users, but just had its first one million new users day this week.

Aside from my LinkedIn account, I am keeping my social media usage all in the Meta family, from Facebook through Insta and Threads. Oh, and WhatsApp when I travel internationally. I rather like Threads, and do not find it to be an echo chamber of disaffected users from the Twitterverse. I hear both Left and Right voices there, and use the site to display my Texas photos, all rendered in black and white.

I haven’t signed up for Bluesky—yet—if only because I don’t have enough hours in the day to create content. I still have my Twitter account, but haven’t used it since Musk took over. He made it impossible to cross-link content from other sites to his, and at that point I said that was fine. Thanks very much. It was fun while it lasted.

From my perch in the ivory towers of academe, I see social media as having evolved now to the point that which brands—because that’s what they are—have become a reflection of us as consumers. Think about the brands you buy, your streaming services, your vehicle, your clothes. They are all extensions of you and your personality. Just as we are loyal to our consumer brands, we are now loyal to our socials. We have choices, and we can decide to pig out at the trough of social media, or pick only a few, or none at all. Again, that’s a reflection of you, and a consumer choice.

I just had no idea 16 years ago when I got started in all this that it would wind up becoming just another exercise in consumer behavior.

So currently My Goal is go through my bookmarks in both my twitter accounts and clear em out. Second is going through my follows and find their BlueSky Equivalent and then I'll still use the site til the site dies or gets better. But I might MIGHT go the route I saw other's suggest and delete my posts and private my account, Not delete, but keep it but private it so no one steals my name and does some fraud stuff. I know I'm not a celeb or any one of note BUT you never know. So If the site doesn't die but it becomes useless, I'll go that route and just keep my account private and leave it there while I have fun over on BlueSky. that's basically my goal of today, I won't get it done but it's at least something I can do for the today and not feel like I'm Lazy.

I like suggestions on things to watch. I only have a few hard boundaries when it comes to what I read or watch. Gore is generally okay, but I would like a warning on extreme stuff just in case. Sexual or nude things depend on my mood, so a warning would be much appreciated.

I have a Bluesky, twitch and an A03 account under the same name as this one. I have a Wattpad under the name 'WrensGarden', as well as an Instagram and Discord of 'Wren017'. I don't post anything on those accounts, but I'm there. Preferably, don't message me privately.

Now that's out of the way! I'm very dramatic and imaginative, so I will probably come up with some bat shit theories and say some weird shit along the way. I also get extreme second-hand embarrassment (And anxiety) when there are arguments or things like that, so be warned.

I also have minecraft 'ocs' I guess that's what I'd call them since they're not a representation of me. So if you want info on them, I'd be happy to provide. I would stream using them, but I don't have the correct set-up or friends to do that with, so.

I might do some art or fanfics along the way, but I might just stick with theories and general notes, as that's comparably easier in my opinion.

COVID Stimulus Loan: What Is It & How To Apply For It?

Due to the unexpected response to the Coronavirus pandemic people have been advised to prioritize social distancing in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Economy has taken a huge fall in these past few weeks because of business closures and travel restrictions.

In order to restore the economy, the CARES Act also known as the CoronaVirus aid, Relief and Economic security act was passed last week by the US lawmakers. A disaster similar to this occured in 2009 known as the Financial crisis in which an act was passed to help stabilize the economy. Looking back at the history the budget of the CARES Act is the double of the Financial crisis act in 2009..

The CARES Act contains around 2.2 trillion dollars that is to be divided among various individuals and also can be used to serve various purposes. Basically this act was designed to help companies that are severely affected due to the economic downfall caused by this outbreak. Some companies are affected due to their employees not being able to come to work because of the lockdown and the rest are lacking demand for their products. A few tech companies are experiencing a rise in their sales while some businesses have gone from ten to zero.

Some Important points regarding the COVID-19 Stimulus Loan are as follows:

Funds Distributed individually:

The US economy is planning to provide door to door service to the people in need of the loan using helicopters. They are referring to it as a direct cash payment to the individuals and their families. That rounds about to a total of 30 percent of the total CARES Act. The main part of this plan is to provide direct payment to the citizens running businesses and families according to the number of children. Some other key points about this act are listed:

Student loans:

Majority of the students were put to ease as the CARES Act was passed by the law. The important thing about this act was that both monthly payments and interest accrual held by the federal government on most student loans were to be suspended  until late september.

The remaining community who had taken their loans from private companies are in a state of shock and are trying to find ways to get them out of this situation. Though it doesn't stop any private lender companies to stop their payment or from adding interests.

The Private student loan market has a worth of billions which is still a fraction of the federal one. The federal market goes up to a trillion dollars and is also growing as the cost of education goes up. The amount of payday loans are comparatively less than the private student loans in America and more than a million students are using private student loans per year.

Borrowers:

The Borrowers who are listed in the list of people with federally backed loans can request leniency in mortgage payments for up to six months.

Expansion of Unemployment Benefits:

Due to the pandemic the authorities have announced an expansion of unemployment benefits. It includes almost everyone such as freelancers, workers in the gig economy and laid off employees.

Big Businesses:

The big businesses take about a total of 25 percent of the budget from the CARES Act. It is aimed at stabilizing large scale businesses and especially the ones located in the mostly affected sectors.

The first company to receive this support will be the airlines. Around 58 billion dollars have already been reserved for commercial and cargo airlines. There is a slight chance of a ban regarding the activities in stock buybacks for companies receiving stimulus money. It is mainly due to recent criticism and the term of the ban will be the term of the loan plus one year.

Small Businesses:

The small businesses will also be getting some aid from the CARES Act and it is about 19 percent of the total amount. The qualifying companies can be provided with a loan upto 10 million dollars as instructed by the authorities. Things like paying the rent and keeping employees on their company roster can be done using this loan.

State and Local Government:

It is without a doubt that there is a portion of funds allocated for the State and the Local Government. 17 percent of the total funds are going to local governments to help them fight this virus. Some of that will also be directed towards schools and child care services.

Public and Health Services:

A very large ransom of this fund will go to Public and Health Services that rounds about a 100 billion dollars to help fight COVID-19. It was necessary to provide the health services with such an amount as the root of this pandemic is related to health. Right now the health officers and hospitals are focusing on increasing the amount of ventilators for incoming patients.

The CARES Act also helps the food security programs and educational services.

Paycheck Protection Program:

The economic sector under new guidance issued by the small business administration are helping non-profits and faith-based groups by providing them with a PPP loan also known as the Paycheck Protection Program. It will help keep small business on track and help keep the economy stable somehow during this pandemic, but most companies are still not covered under this loan.

Around 450 billion dollars is set to be distributed among small businesses through loans and the distributors would be the Small Business Administration and some other organizations. In this way the authorities can prevent the employment rate from going down by keeping the businesses running.  

The purpose of the Paycheck Protection Program was to accomplish mainly two objectives. First, to help cover the working expenses for the company in case of the worst possible scenario. Second, to provide their employers with a handsome incentive in order to retain their employees. The true intention of the program is to allow small businesses that are affected due to this pandemic to survive without changing their course of action.
