Generally speaking, I like more the anime because soundtrack and animation enhance the action scenes (lively moments can be really confusing in the manga because Horikoshi draws scenes jumping from a moment to another and he skip a lot, I'm not saying it is an error, it's just his style - in fact when people says that scene looks differently in the manga, I think it's less "they deliberately changed it" and more "It's inevitable because in animation/reality you don't skip from an expression/pose to another so abruptly").

But this scene was better in the manga. I mean, I like the almost mystical atmosphere in the anime with the light and all, but here you can see more clearly the "everybody holding their breath and being frozen" like if the world stopped, waiting (obviously, that is because everything IS still, it's a drawing, lol). And obviously because to have them all flanked in the same panel underlines the: "All your children are watching you".

BNHA 390 - Shoto Todoroki: Rising - Thoughts

I'm super-late with this, but the chapter dropped in the middle of my work month from hell. In the end, it was also lucky, because I was too busy to read the fandom reactions / discourse and got the space to process it alone.

I have to say that naysayers calling it "dragging" (when in reality, the whole thing is 3 tiny chapters) or "rushed" are both wrong. I think HK wrote exactly what he wanted to write, but whatever it was, it was never going to satisfy everyone.

It's enough to look at the Chapter number and title to know how much he cares:

190 - His Start (Endeavor's triumph)

290- Dabi's Dance (Dabi's big moment)

390 - Shoto Todoroki: Rising - it's finally Shoto's moment to shine.

But not only that:

Also, 39 can be read as "3-San 9-Kyyu" -> Thank You and chapter 390 will be included in Vol 39 - the "Thank you" volume.

Add to that the first words spoken by Shouto in his Rising chapter, and guess what... It is:

"Thank you, Iida."

Speaking of Iida, in advance I really didn't see him being a part of the Todoroki showdown, but in hindsight it makes a lot of sense. Iida is the first ally Shouto made by saving him and inspiring him, they had great foiling around their families since their start. Plus, Iida being there is like all of Class A being there - he's the president after all.

And not only that - Iida who was introduced as diligently kicking down robots for entrance exam points, even though in his heart he knew what the right thing to do was grew into the person he wanted to be, also thanks to Shouto. Someone who will put supporting his friend both emotionally and in practical ways first, use his speed to save people without hesitation and through this making a huge impact.

Their combo breaks the sound barrier - a feat that's really reaching the OFA realm is almost an afterthought - but that's not point, it's just the HOW they get to do what's right. Tsukauchi also gives a little nod to All Might - reminding us that he's behind this - putting his faith in Shouto and Iida - his students - that they can do this.

The way Shouto goes flying (probably carried by the momentum), as Iida yells his parting words - for Shouto to become who he wants to be - reminds me of a cat landing on his feet.

I love this sequence of Shouto hitting the ground and then taking that step that's so big that it doesn't even fit in the panel. It's far from his first step - he's been taking them again and again since his first visit to Rei. And despite all the hurt, disappointment, let-down - Shouto is not giving up on his family.

I think a lot of people loved Shouto's letter to Rei. It's endearing in its clumsy awkward way. As a quick reminder, Shouto started to write these letters after he failed the Licensing Exam and couldn't visit Rei, because his weekends were taken up with the remedial classes. It's the time when his unprocessed trauma prevents him from being a hero - even though almost everyone else passes.

The letter clearly shows that Shouto understands that him failing the exam has nothing to do with his fighting ability and everything to do with his lacking communication skills, so he's determined to improve. It's also the period where he has to step out of the safety net that Midoriya and Iida gave him, as he spends a lot of time with Bakugou.

And it's interesting that after Ch 352 focuses a lot on Class A as a source of reassurance for Shouto, his rising chapter focuses on how he learns healthy conflict. Because when it comes down to it, in the Todoroki family every conflict is either shut down (like separating the kids), or is blown out of proportion, like Enji abusing Rei.

But Shouto grows from the conflicts - he learns that these can help clear the air and be the source of positive change. Bakugou is prominently featured in these memories, reminding us how much both Shouto and him learnt about these clashes and how they came to understand each other better (which furthered both of their storylines).

Shouto wants to be like his friends - caring, outward looking, able to feel empathy and righteous anger.

Notice also the way the speech bubbles are placed. Who he wants to be above Rei, Fuyumi and Natsuo. And the "not easy, but I'm trying" above Endeavor and Touya as a tie-back to how being "Endeavor's son, Dabi's brother" impacts how people perceive Shouto.

And the way he runs - so desperate, giving it his all - ties back to all the times he was late before.

When Shouto enters the battlefield, it's the first time the Todoroki family shares a panel since Touya attacked baby Shouto. The mismanagement of fire from that time resulted in this - Touya turning into a live nuke about to explode and take everyone with him - the whole family and the innocent by-standers alike.

I already talked about Touya's POV - but it's worth mentioning that his line "It was so simple", circles back too to Shouto in the Stain arc.

It's difficult to see even the simple things when you yourself aren't seen. Shouto needed Midoriya to see him, to confront him, to call him out on his goals to realize that he gets to decide who he wants to be. And Touya needed his family to see him, to confront him also to be able to see Shouto not as some monster masterpiece, but as a crying little boy, fighting for his family.

And being finally able to see all of his family makes Touya realize he doesn't want to die yet, that there are things he still wants to say.

I don't mind that Shouto uses Great Glacial Aegir again. It's the move he made to save Touya, and it's honestly a perfect culmination of Shouto arc. Also this Glacial Aegir is a completely different scale than the previous one - enough to stop a nuke. But again - this is not about

Having it in play both times shows that Shouto did his best the first time around too, but couldn't do it because they weren't together. Because Touya's Phosphor is the endpoint of all the hurt and rage and jealousy piling up and simmering inside Touya and Shouto's Phosphor is all the hard work of healing and reconciliation and processing trauma. In the end, the power of healing overcomes the power of rage, it lights a light within the fiery core of Touya's nuke.

Shouto brings relief to both his family and the people caught in blast range. His name is not chanted by civilians, I doubt if he was even recognized by anyone, other than his dedicated fanbase of 3 kids. But it's a start. And more importantly he's doing what he wants - bringing reassurance to others while still being there for his family.

And just like in his Origin chapter, the mist lifts and Shouto is standing and I love this panel - such a good Shouto-like line.

He's not making fancy speeches - that's not his style - it's all clumsy but sincere. He starts by acknowledging Rei, Natsuo and Fuyumi - how their intervention mattered (maybe their ice was needed - but even if it didn't, them showing up meant Endeavor couldn't go through his murder-suicide plan and they brought precious seconds for Shouto to arrive).

Then Shouto addresses Touya framing this whole thing not as some ideological fight between villains and heroes, but a ridiculously powerful family fight between two brothers. And even as he's technically the winner, he acknowledges Touya's fire as exactly what Endeavor always wanted from Shouto.

His last line is heartbreaking and heartfelt, gracious and cruel at the same time - as it's right above Endeavor. Knowing Shouto it's just blunt and factual. He's not Endeavor masterpiece. He didn't go the way his father wanted and became who he wanted to be. Someone whose power doesn't separate him from his family, but rather uses his power, his entire being to bring them together - so they can work out their issues.

And I love that this starts with Natsuo - who was a source of honest confrontation in the family - kind of ignoring Touya's ranting as he asks him "what now?". Because this was the comedown from the tantrum of the century. And it's true that Touya and Endeavor dragged the whole family into it. They are all in hell. But they are all together.

And FINALLY - too late, Endeavor says what he should have / could have said back during the Touya reveal, or when they met again on the battlefield.

It's so little, so inadequate, so late, but it still matters, as evidenced by Touya's hollow eyes coming back into focus. And Enji does something simple and fatherlike, as he drags himself over to Touya to warm him as he keeps freezing from the inside. So simple. Such a small thing.

And finally the dam breaks loose and Touya can say what he wanted to say - express his hurt not via a nuke but verbal confrontation. And we see melting ice running down his face as the symbol of the tears he hasn't been able to shed for a decade, while Endeavor encourages him to let it all out.

Not healing yet - but anger - it's a necessary step in processing grief over what they could have had.

And Endeavor finally apologizes properly to everyone in the family - but when he gets to Shouto, he's at loss what to say either because Shouto is passing out or because where do you even start. Or maybe both. It's sad and it feels empty, and I think that's exactly how it's supposed to feel. Because getting to know all of the Todoroki family we know it didn't have to be this way - they all have capacity for goodness and they are all capable of caring for their family.

And in the end, Shouto, the family hero is still in the middle all alone - with no hugs or comfort, and not even a thanks - after he gave every last bit of himself to save the people who hurt him the most from the almost inevitable tragedy.

It's not a dark ending, nor is it a happy ending. It's sad and raw and the damage is real; both in terms of Touya's and Enji's charred body, and also all the trauma that has been exposed during this confrontation. A big flashy move can only take you so far, the real work - clawing their way out of hell starts now.

But for the moment everyone is alive, and sometimes that's good enough.

I don't know if this is how it ends for Shouto - I don't think so. We've had lots of clues that him becoming the family hero is the hurdle he has to overcome to stand with his classmates.

I still think that in the end we'll get an ending with the whole class coming to Deku - a Class A ending. But for now, Shouto is out for the count and I'm sure it will be a long wait. So strap in.

In the end, I hope we will see him smile - if not in the endgame, maybe the epilogue. He deserves it.

His Rising chapter gave us a glimpse of who he's grown into, what his values are as a person and as a hero. And I think for everyone who was worried that Shouto's endgame would be an acceptance of Endeavor, it is clear now that he's on his own path deciding for himself his own priorities and way of doing things.

And the fact that he didn't break away is because that's who he decided to be. Touya's looping explosion showed that you can't just save the "good victims". You have to save everyone - the innocent bystanders (Fuyumi and Natsuo), the person who doesn't want to hurt others but is broken by her own victimhood (Rei), the victim who becomes a perpetrator (Touya) and the source of it all (Enji). And since the Todoroki family is a small reflection of hero society - this is what will happen also on the large scale.

I'm sure there are people who didn't like the chapter - it wasn't enough of a closure, it wasn't happy enough or sad enough, it felt like the apology was hollow - if these are the things you are feeling think about that likely that's what Horikoshi wanted you to feel.

The Todorokis are an incredibly messed up family with lots of deep running hurt, trauma, and this is their reality. It's messy and raw and sad. There is no neat way of resolving it all with an ultimate move, no matter how fancy or powerful. But they are alive and they are together.

Here's my thoughts on the last few chapters since they've wrecked me mentally. The panels are so beautifully done and every single one portrays tragedy. There's so much symbolism and I think this is the most artistically pleasing arc in the entire series.

This panel this fucking panel is so heartwrenching because we discover Touya is imagining this scene play out while burning to death.

He thinks he's finally getting his family's attention when in reality this is happening and he's just hallucinating due to brain damage.

These panels make it even more heartbreaking. They're just yelling at him to stop but he's still happy because all he ever wanted was his family to see him. Just think about the amount of desperation.

Then Dabi is back meaning he's still holding on to his resentment. He tried and tried to get unconditional love which every child deserves thinking he had to accomplish something to achieve it. If giving him attention was so easy why did it take so long?

Now that he's an adult most think it shouldn't be a big deal but abuse/neglect fucks you up really badly for life. You want to blame someone but blaming your own parent fucks with your mind even more. It makes you guilty about your own existence.

AHH yes the ending. Shoto finally arriving with his ice 🙏 Kun from the nomu fight and the rest of the world are praying. This is the moment where I was finally a bit satisfied.

Too many parallels to the fight back in chap 190 so here's to hoping no one will die. Touya just might but I don't think he's taking his entire family with him. He's not even taking Endeavor with him.

But think about it the worst thing for this family would be for Touya to have come back and died right in front of them again, it would be just haunt them so much. It's horrible but it would be interesting to see. Ironically if he lives he'll end up imprisoned forever.

I'm a bit confused I want to see him live and heal with his fam, actually discover who he is apart from his family's trauma but the way this current society is set he won't be able to. I want to see more of Dabi/Touya though and I'm sure we all do. I need to see more of the Todorokis, I need to see them happier ;~; I think he'll def get more content like a spin off even after bnha ends. I'll fucking campaign for it.

Or adding historical guns and shit to a Xianxia/Wuxia setting.

Jiang Yanli and Nie Huasang are gonna shot some mother fuckers and no one is gonna bat an eye even with the loud ass noise and it being blatantly obvious… among other characters doing some open and blatant murder in creative ways with their new power sets and weapons and poison and shit.

My fix it’s have a lot of murder for making things better, it seems.

Want to cry about Johnchurch today, because apparently I do

I think about… Lucretia could only erase what she could write down. And Merle was the only one who ever went into Parley. Merle was the only one who ever met John. And Merle (Clint) notoriously has a bad memory. Whatever recap he gave to the crew, and to Lucretia for her journals, was never going to be all that detailed.

(And I’m willing to wager, even out of what he did remember, he didn’t tell them ALL of it. Some of those moments were private.)

So Lucretia does her best, but her erasure of the Parley sessions is… spotty. Incomplete. Merle can’t remember WHO the man in a suit that he played chess with was, or what happened to him, or where he met him. But he remembers the man’s face, in snatches and moments. He remembers a tumbled mix of emotions—anger, exasperation, worry, hope, pain. Never fear. He remembers thinking he probably ought to be afraid, that most people would be, that it would make a lot more sense to be afraid. But fear was never quite the right description of what he felt, thinking of the man in the suit.

His memories of the man in the suit are… strange. Fractured. His head hurts if he tries to think about them for too long or too closely, if he tries too hard to remember, to put it back in context. But snatches of their conversation drift to him, across the years. Strange, sometimes incomprehensible snippets, where the words out of his own mouth don’t make any damn sense.

(This works, by the way, with the headcanon that Merle’s spotty memory occasionally spits out something backward, something ought-to-be-voidfished, like when he says in the first episode that he feels like he and Magnus and Taako have grown apart. There’s a little bit more of an opening, a little bit more of a handhold for the memories to pry their way back in, than there is for the others.)

And he knows—senses, remembers, intuits—that he shouldn’t tell anyone else about his memories of the man in the suit. He feels, with an almost violent certainty, utterly strange considering how vague his memories of the man himself are, that no one else would understand. So he stays quiet. The man lives in his head and his fogged memories, at once intrusive and comforting. The man was important to him, or is important to him still. Merle isn’t sure which one it is. He’s never been one to let himself get stuck on quandaries, theological, existential, physical, or otherwise, though, so he lets it be. He’ll meet the man again one day. He feels quite sure of that. In the right moment, and the right place, he’ll meet the man again, and something about his shambles of a life will click back into place.

The day of Story and Song happens, and everything rushes back, and the only moment of calm he gets for the next several hours is the near-silent goodbye on the beach, during which he and John do nothing but exist side by side, for a little while. It’s all either of them really want or are able to do. Anything else is too messy, too painful. This way, it ends in peace.

Everyone else—all the other members of the red robes—they will have time to reconcile, to work through piecing back together their shattered memories and disjointed lives. Merle will have time for a proper talk with Lucretia, for a joyful reunion with Lup. He’ll have time to sit down at a table with Davenport a week later and play euchre, until both of them, almost without warning, find that they’re both crying. He’ll have time to pull his kids onto his lap and tell them his own version of the Story, of how they fit into it. He’ll have time to puzzle his life back into a complete picture.

He doesn’t get time with John.

He’s walked around with a half-static memory of the man for a decade, and there’s no time to process the truth before they have to say goodbye.

No one else knew him. No one else will ever mourn him. Everyone else is celebrating his demise. If there’s grief, it’s only Merle’s.

His end is peaceful, by the shore, and silent, because Merle has no time to unpick all the things he wants to say.

That’s alright, though. They both know that’s alright. John’s been muddled too, if differently, unable to think clearly for years, crushed beneath the collective scream of The Hunger. It’s a blessing to have that moment of clarity and peace at all.

They don’t need to say anything. They both already know.

Still, it aches in Merle’s chest at night, sometimes, like the pain of his phantom arm, all the things he might have said and never did.

Do you have any good Humans are space orcs/humans are weird (that kind of thing) short story links?

Hoo okay so the reason that I was asking about the Doctors Without Borders one (which is here, incidentally, and which you should read if you haven't come across it before) is that 1) I have been doing some personal archival work to save some internet stories offline, but 2) I have been historically good about tagging my fandom stuff but have unfortunately left most non-fandom stuff untagged, and by the time I realized I ought to've created a humans are weird tag it was too late, so my blog is Not a good place to try and find them. But, since I'm trying to dig them up for myself anyway, I can share the ones I've managed to find so far. And hey: open invitation to anyone who wants to put links to their favorites of the Humans Are Weird stories in the reblogs or replies!

I will also do what someone did in the replies of my query post and point you to r/HFY and specifically its sidebar of links to previous classics and must-reads -- I'm not as familiar with that bc I don't use reddit so much but it helped me dig a couple of these back up.

The sending stone died before Cerrit made it out. And Cerrit is a full-classed rogue. No Sending, no spells at all. With nothing but destroyed continent beneath him, he’d have no way to contact anyone.

His family had *no idea* he made it out. They very probably assumed he didn’t.

When the entire continent of Dunemas went dark, when the news started to filter back of its destruction, when the scant survivors started trying to reach their families…there was no reason to believe that Cerrit had escaped.

Survivors and their stories emerge—but they’re civilians, mostly. Regular people who escaped on ships, through teleport, through trees.

The ones from Avalir and Cathmoíra have one particular story to tell: at the end, the Herald told them that the ring of gold, the magisters, the leaders of the city would go down with the ship. That no space on what lifeboats they had would be taken from Avalir’s people.

So that’s the answer: Cerrit, too, would have gone down with the ship.

His wife probably had a difficult conversation with their children. Told them about sacrifice, told them sometimes we lose people but they will always love us just the same, told them that their dad sent them away from the city because he loved them more than anything in the world and then spent every last moment he could trying to save as many more people as he could because he was a good man, because he cared so deeply, because he found problems and fixed them. These conversations probably happened amidst panic and chaos, as news of the attack of Vasselheim spread, as the gods descended and magic raged out of control across Exandria, as the Betrayer gods wrought as much destruction as they could cause.

Were they still at home, when Cerrit finally found them? Did their home still exist after all those weeks he took flying across the ocean? Did they need to flee somewhere safer? Did Kir scrawl a note somewhere the wreckage — “Wingspan: gone north-by-northeast. Look for trail markers on the trees” because he’d promised, mom, he promised, and what if he’s coming but he can’t find us because we’re not here? Did Cerrit have to bring every ounce of his investigation and tracking skills — with no magic, no Avalir, no Patia to let him look back at memories, no Quay to inspire him, no Nydas to fund or enchant any helpful items, no partner to compare notes with, nothing but his sharp eyes and his brain and utter fucking determination — to follow after his family, weeks on an already weeks-long journey, slow and messy and fearing every day he might be too late?

Did he show up almost unrecognizable, head to toe in soot and dirt, some new scar from his near brushes with death, some fresh wounds still bound in bandages for want of anyone with healing spell slots? Did he find his family weary, grieving, scared, but whole and—for the moment—safe? Did they even believe it was him at first? Did they fear he was a ghost, or worse, some horror dragged from the wreckage of Avalir and reanimated by an enraged Asmodeus? Did he take off a bandage to show he still bleeds, and bleeds red, did he kiss his children’s heads and call Kir “Talon”, and see Maya clutching the sphere as if she hasn’t let go of it since it landed in her hands, and tell her—voice breaking at the reminder of Patia, at the first thing he has seen in months besides himself that survived Avalir’s destruction—that he is so, so proud of her, and more importantly he loves her so, so much, and then they knew, then they were sure: Cerrit kept his promise.

A surprising Slytherin thing to do

My sister is in slytherin, and she once told me that in her spare time that she would grab a dictionary, like a full on Meriam Webster English dictionary, and open it to a random page and read it like a novel. Me, a Hufflepuff, could not for the life of me understand how that could be remotely enjoyable, and was always like “That’s such a Ravenclaw thing to do,” and was sure that Mr. Sorting Hat Quiz was wrong in the case of my sister.

However, after conversing with my Ravenclaw queen @allyjoe755 about it, she said, “….you know, that’s something that I can see Draco doing.” And honestly….yeah, me too

And I further realized that slytherins would do something like that for pure mindless amusement and entertainment, which she did. I can guarantee that she can’t remember a single definition of some benign word that started with the letter F on page 562 to properly tell you off with. A Ravenclaw, however, would, and would read a dictionary not for the sake of it, not even for research, but just to say they did. Other than that, they’d probably pick up a history book if they were bored.

A slytherin? Probably not.

TLDR: slytherins read dictionaries because they’re bored, Ravenclaw do it for bragging rights

Dabi revealing Endeavor’s abuse is so much bigger than the Todoroki family

He’s revealing that a man who was torturing his children was able to become number two hero.

He’s revealing that the man who did this was able to hide it from the public with next to no effort.

He’s revealing that there were absolutely no measures in place that would have prevented this from happening. No one at the HPSC thought to check in with the families of individuals as powerful as Endeavor

No one thought to do an investigation after Rei’s mental breakdown and Shoto was burned

No one thought it was suspicious that Touya died soon after

No one took notice of how Shoto was reluctant to use his fire in the sports festival, not even the school staff that works closely with Endeavor.

Because no one in this hero society doubts the heroes’ moral integrity. The citizens of Japan simply don’t perceive it as a possibility that their heroes could do such evil selfish things under their own noses and still succeed.

Endeavor is genuinely good at his job, he’s talented and hardworking. So of course no one expected this of him, the people of Japan put him on a pedestal with All Might and every other hero.

By exposing Endeavor, Dabi is exposing the whole of hero society. He’s exposing the rampant hero worship of this society. He’s exposing the incompetence of the HPSC. He’s exposing the heroes who have done evil selfish things much like Endeavor. He’s exposing the media for painting heroes as perfect and flawless. He’s exposing every single citizen that saw him and his family’s pain and ignored their cries for help.

Obviously this is gonna negatively effect the other members of the Todoroki family. I’m not saying he’s entirely in the right in the way he went about doing this. Obviously killing people is wrong. Obviously Rei is gonna lose a lot of progress. Obviously Natsuo, Fuyumi, and Shouto are gonna be meet with a lot of negative attention from the public and the people around them, etc.

But Dabi is doing something that has the potential to change so much, and I’m tired of people whining about the interpersonal drama of the Todoroki family when what he’s doing is so, so much bigger than that.

I was wondering about Hood’s cameo in this chapter - and beyond the revelation that Touya escaped the fate of being turned into a nomu by running away...

I realized that this fight is set up similarly as the Endeavor vs Hood confrontation (down to the point where Shouto has a speed-quirked buddy to help him out). Touya is Shouto’s rage-filled past self, the way the strength-obsessed Hood was Endeavor’s past self.

Touya is even drawn more and more nomu-like as the fight goes on...

Endeavor vs Hood ended up with Endeavor killing his past self (and Hood easily could have been Touya - just for a chilling thought!!!). He won by drawing out every last bit of strength out of himself (the old way of just going plus ultra and winning by pushing limits - which at the time seemed impressive) and killing that “creature” without wondering for a moment who he was or why he was created. 

And even though Endeavor thought he killed his past and got a fresh start - and as a hero kind of did - it didn’t change his family dynamic. Things remained tense, his children were still shunning him. And because he didn’t, couldn’t heal his family, not by just burying the past, and in the end it came back to bite him and destroying even Endeavor as a hero legacy because:

Shouto now fighting Touya head-on, repeating Endeavor’s “feat” of killing him or helping him in his suicidal quest, would be just making the same mistake. Burying the past again. And we know how well that went the first time. 

But Shouto’s view of his past self is different. That resentment and rage-filled boy he was, didn’t die - he was saved, he changed. And he believes that others can change too - which is why he kept reaching out. When he yells, ”I won’t let you, baka aniki”, he’s seeing also Touya beyond Dabi’s nomu-like appearance. His idiot brother, his past self, who shouldn’t be killed, but should be saved, because the family won’t be healed and Shouto won’t be the hero he wants to be unless he can reach Touya and show him that he can give meaning to his own power, he leave the mark of his own existence on his own terms. 

I was actually even thinking - and call me crazy - that what if we got it all wrong? What if it’s not Endeavor who supposed to save Touya - because he clearly has no idea how, and because just like Toga being obsessed with Deku, Touya needs to be broken free of his obsession of seeking Eneavor’s approval first. But, what if, after Shouto saved Touya, it will be Touya who will reach out to Endeavor? Who will give him one last chance to do the right thing and be the father he never was, but should have been? Closing the circle that started when Shouto went to visit Rei.
