If Sauron were a body of water, he'd be the Bolton Strid.
Pretty to look at, seemingly innocent and harmless, but will brutally murder you if you mess with him.

This one is geniunely terrifying, and I learned about it recently from a TikTok video (that I promptly lost). The Bolton Strid in Yorkshire is a stretch of river that, at this location, appears to be only six feet across. But it is claimed that it has killed 100% of the people who have fallen in it. Upstream, one finds that the River Wharf that the Strid is a part of is shallow and wide, some 30 feet across. In the Strid, the river is constrained by rocks, and effectively turned on its side, becoming deep and narrow and fast, with lots of natural hollows and caves beneath the water that can trap people who fall in.
You can read the Atlas Obscura article in the link above, or just google Bolton Strid to learn more. It is frightening for how innocent it looks: it is a waterway that you could jump over, but if you fall in, you’re dead.

"Thanks to the local geology, the river basically turns on its side, gouging out passages and tunnels in the rocks below. Those banks are actually overhangs. There isn't any riverbed just below the surface, it's a deep, boiling mass of fast and deadly currents!"

The villain stared down at them, eyes not quite cold, but not caring either. Their hands were steady. The hero shook.
“You’re my best friend,” the hero’s voice broke, and it was a plea and a statement and a reminder all at once.
Don’t do this, I love you—
The gun went off.

The Striding Place
The Strid
We’ve been for a weekend away in the Yorkshire Dales with our extended family and spend a day on the Wharf, just bellow the Strid. Strid Wood is a beautiful place but not one to take small children, for obvious reasons…

Bolton Strid
Within the grounds of Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire is to be found one of England’s most impressive natural wonders, the Strid. A little way upstream the River Wharfe looks like a perfectly normal river, some thirty-feet wide with frothing currents and waves, but then suddenly its course narrows, forcing its water through a narrow gap between two banks of mossy boulders.
Instead of flowing in…
