today in insane anti-intellectualism: I just saw a post about how aspiring healthcare practitioners shouldn't take classes in biology and chemistry because those subjects are useless and bad. ????
#the op was like “they should have to study literature and the human condition like ME”#and it's like. hmmmm. I can understand where you're coming from here buddy but maybe think for a hot second#about why aspiring doctors have to take biology 101 before they can jump right into microbial genetics and viral pathogenesis or whatever#like. these classes build on each other. you absolutely need a basic understanding of college-level bio and chem before you can do anything#as someone who is very passionate about both science and writing#(I am getting a degree in microbiology and medical HUMANITIES. because I LIKE HUMANITIES)#I hate the rhetoric that certain STEM subjects are lame boring loser classes for closed-minded idiots who can't see the beauty in the world#there is so much beauty in biology and chemistry and physics! the universe is so big and weird and fascinating#but you'll never see that if you have the mentality that YOUR favorite subjects are the Only Ones That Matter Ever#for the record (as someone who's taken a lot of STEM and humanities classes recently) both STEM and humanities majors do this#and it's obnoxious no matter where it's coming from

I love the tranquil, haunting music in Scavengers Reign that sometimes plays even when there is something scary or combative going on. The planet is just being the planet, creatures being creatures, circle of life etc. It's almost scarier when the whole environment is just telling you this is normal, this is fine. We're already playing your soft outtro, thanks for playing your part in the ecosystem. You might be an interloper here, but don't worry, a decay-loving flower will bloom from your corpse all the same.

small castlevania: curse of darkness headcanon i've been meaning to share:
i 100% believe hector and isaac collaborated on their innocent devil designs, which accounts for the variety you see in-game (and why they both have the same IDs in their arsenal, game logic aside)
but individually, they both have a very different approach to ID designs
isaac is from an accomplished family of sorcerors, steeped in knowledge of the dark arts since he was born. so it makes sense his IDs end up looking way more demonic and hellish, terrifying creatures that in no way resemble anything made by God. and y'know, it really just suits his whole edgy aesthetic lmao. but as a point of reference, his designs really lean into reptilian, draconic, or insectoid forms for all those angular shapes and otherworldly qualities. there's nothing soft or nice about them (but def have that "face only a father could love" vibe going on)
hector, on the other hand, has a fondness for animals, especially creatures of the night, and so his IDs are made in their image. but since so many of his animal companions as a child were chased away or outright killed for the crime of providing companionship, his IDs are made bigger, stronger, and more terrifying so no one would ever dare harm them, or him, again. leans towards the more mammalian side of things - recognizable as animals albeit very fucked up since he likes to mix and match characteristics
#castlevania#castlevaniaposting#i imagine this is also like. a major point of contention for them since they have such differing tastes#hector thinks isaacs designs are more bark than bite with no practical considerations about how they should behave and attack#isaac thinks hectors designs are too-common and that he's limiting himself to animals humans already know how to deal with easily#but thats the beauty of it - they both have ideas that are informed by their respective backgrounds#and when they can stop arguing for 5 seconds and come to together they can make terrifying creatures that minimize each's weaknesses#this goes with my other headcanon that its not a coincidence hector and isaac bitj ended up as generals#drac has been giving them more time attention and guidance to make them the very strongest of his pupils#he's been grooming them your honor

#i don't know if i will finish this so i'm going to share my useless facts about them here:#their family is from tevinter but they relocated to rivain when minas and ashxen were children#both are mages albeit very weak. they support their fighting skills with magic but do not use it exclusively#minas is an archer while ashxen uses a shortsword#ashxen is 4'11 and minas is 5'5. my short king#they are around 30 years old. minas is 17 minutes older but everyone mistakes ashxen for being the older twin#they are half-dwarfes :^) their dad is dwarf and mom is human#and they are both lords of fortune!#that's all i have for now i think...can't wait for the game to come out so i could refine their backstories and stuff#AND FINALLY GIVE THEM IN-GAME ARMOR#i am still drawing them using my own design for clothes and while it's beautiful (imho) it doesn't fit into the da setting#wip

I’d be REALLY wary of that idea. I know it’s not your intention but no matter how you slice it that creates a scenario where some cats are genetically superior and more civilised than others based on where they’re from, which I feel is bad even if they happen to be nice to kittypets. Really love your work but maybe consider how you’d handle that one !!
Yeah, that's exactly the reason why I tacked the big old "THIS IS NOT IN THE REWRITE" warning onto the front of it lmao.
It also creates a situation where the Clans have an actual, unfortunate REAL justification for cat eugenics, which would mix very, very badly even in situations where there is no Clan/Housecat conflict. Unless it was completely dominant and always passed on but... you see how it's already an uncomfortable idea I'd have to tack on a bunch of bandaids to.
Sometimes a thought remains just a thought exactly because you end up thinking through its implications, y'know?
#What I like about the idea that I haven't figured out how to do any other way is that it explains why cat culture is so rare#Like why weren't there cats living at that big beautiful lake as soon as the previous descendants cleared out? With a twolegplace so close?#Obviously for one of my rewrite stories the answer is that the lake was ecologically decimated for a time... but#It's been recovering for decades and cats could live in an early oak forest#Or the various twolegplaces. Why do they not have their own organized groups if cats have languages to speak?#So far I've just kinda ignored it or used the gods. Like Midnight is preventing people from living at the Lake#Or. Cats#I should say#If it's a quirk of Special Cats that also opens up talking about how Real Humans shouldn't let their cats outside#But like. This is ultimately just waffling because the cats in canon are not written as real cats. Warrior Cats isn't really a series about#cats at all.#It's about small four-legged humans#With a very bad xenophobia problem#And you all see how many fires I put out with my rewrite in the pursuit of snuffing out as much xenophobia as possible#So... it's like I have to sacrifice the real-world impact of the most invasive species on Earth to avoid it. Yknow?#Because I can't say BOTH 'some cats are ok to live in clans while others are not' AND 'Xenophobia Bad'#They're incompatible statements#And so I can't use the Clan Cat Subspecies in my rewrite.#Hope that's making sense

saw the first volume of Cursed Princess Club in the store last Sunday as I was walking by the manga section, and the name was so unusual that I looked it up online when I got home, and found out it was on webtoons to read for free, and just finished it, and holy shit
literally one of the best stories I've ever read
#I don't even know where to begin it's just insanely well-written but also so deeply emotional and wholesome and wonderful#also there's a lady with a were-spider curse tied to her menstrual cycle which gets discussed casually and like#I've never seen menstruation discussed by fictional characters in such a natural and no big deal way it was fucking awesome#but literally everything about every character was so very well-written and presented in such a good way#like I dunno curses as analogies for disabilities and how they don't lessen a person's worth#and how people are still people deserving of love and how difficult self-love and self-acceptance can be#but also how important it is but also how it still sucks to live w/ certain things#and how you can be both angry about something and accepting of it at the same time#but also about how superficial and socially/culturally constructed ideals of beauty and worthiness are and how they're totally fake#and potentially harmful and also how it's possible to work around and against and restructure those ideals#but also it's about princesses (and a couple princes) kicking ass and being cool and also just being human#also I gotta hand it to the author for having a lady who totally enjoys sleeping around and isn't shamed for it whatsoever#there's also a character who's basically aroace and despite two men falling in love with her like#as soon as they find out she's not interested in relationships they back off and respect that and still treat her as a friend#and I dunno that's just neat#like it's satirical fantasy that deconstructs so many different fairytale tropes but it's also so genuine and sincere#that it somehow circles back to embody the heart of a fairytale in all the best ways possible#anyhow it's absolutely worth a read#oracle of lore

I compare the wario guys to muppets all the time but i need tou people to know how not kidding i am. Jim hensons legacy is obviously more sacred as much as i love wario people ao i dont want to undermine that but at the same time they are both ragtag bands of freaky weirdos that don't fit in anywhere else and are all best friends and their goal in life is to put on a wonderful show/game/mayhem, for YOU. And they all love each other very much. The end
#I also think the amount of freedom and electric creativity in both of them production wise is very apparent. Again i want to stress that#Th beautiful philosophy behind fhe production of muppets fraggle rock sesame street etc is unmatched by possibly all other human endeavors#But i think warioware has that spark in it.
