Teddy leaned to the side and took in this Bougainvillea. With Spring just around the corner he's getting pretty excited to smell some fresh blooms on a warm breeze.

Bougainvillea spectabilis (bougainvillea)
I his 1790 book Metamorphosis of Plants, the German philosopher Goethe first suggested that a flower's petals may be derived from leaves. The evolution of petals is still a controversial topic in botany. Majority opinion says that they evolved from stamens (the male part) and this is why highly-doubled flowers are sterile - not enough stamens. But there are respected botanists who argue that petals evolved from sepals, tepals or bracts. Then again, did petals develop just once and all flowering plants with petals have a single common ancestor or did it happen multiple times in many different species? Personally, I'm going with Goethe - these bougainvillea petals sure look like leaves to me.
