So, consider: a stunning reversal on the whole awkward-ass Yami Yugi-Anzu date, i.e. Atem setting up an outing with Seto and then peace-ing the fuck out, enjoy your date, Yugi.

Yugi, bless his heart, tries so hard to fake not being the one in charge of the body.  Jacket draped on the shoulders like a cape?  Check.  THE PHARAOH VOICE(tm)? Check.  Project (false) confidence like a boss?  Check!

He almost gets away with it.  There are small tells, of course, but it’s not like Seto’s ever really talked to either of them much outside of card games; how could he tell Atem isn’t quite that prone to sass, or to show glimmers of anger (mostly on behalf of others) quite so readily?  Hell, how would he know Atem isn’t half as much into cute things as Yugi, or that the way the body dresses is 100% Yugi, pseudo-capes aside?

The jig is up, eventually, because Yugi literally physically cannot keep up The Pharaoh Voice(tm) because honestly, it starts hurting to do after a while, and has to admit that, sorry, his other self is Just Not Into You Like That, Seto.  And then Yugi, dear, sweet Yugi, does the one Cardinal Sin that Seto can’t stand: he sympathizes with him.

It hurts, doesn’t it, he asks.  To be ignored by someone you try your best to reach out to, to gain acknowledgement from?  It’s even worse when you’re only seen as a weak meat puppet for the person that person really wants to be with, you know.  But you still want to duel with someone today, yes?  Then Yugi will be your opponent, Seto.  And even if you never reach out back for him, he’ll make sure you acknowledge his skill as a duelist.

Fast forward, card games happen, Yugi wins--not him and his other self, Yugi--and Seto’s like “well, fuck me” internally, because he is Realizing Things and does not how to deal with it.

(Later, at home, this conversation effectively happens:

Mokuba: So, how was your ~*~date~*~, big brother~? Seto: *grabs briefcase of cards, looking haunted* Yugi’s hot. Mokuba: What?  O.o Seto: *starts going through cards, looking for better card synergies for deck, still looking haunted* Yugi’s hot.)

uh, i guess bakura? though i think that's just because he's my favorite and i like imagining his relationships (of any kind) with other characters in general.

wishshipping is absolutely adorable and i love it but i tend to imagine them in a "the best big/little brother they never had" dynamic.

i also feel this way about buddyshipping. are they married? yes. are they dating? not really. they're platonic-married.

i have considered jonouchi/bakura/honda/otogi plenty of times, even though [see previous bit about buddyshipping].

i'm not yet sure if i ship it but i have also considered yugi/anzu/seto. mostly i just have a hard time shipping seto at all outside of prideshipping (which i guess answers question 12 in the meme); i imagine him as the willingly single guy who'd really like for all these bozos to stop making out already, oh my god you're all disgusting but is also totally not pining for a guy who's been dead for thousands of years u gaiz. (to be clear, he's not envious of them, he's just otherwise not interested in romance and doesn't really understand why this one dead guy is the exception, or that he even is an exception at all. a WHAT IS THIS WARM FEELING IN MY COLD DEAD KOKORO, FUCK YOU FEELINGS I'M TRYING TO RUN A BUSINESS HERE kind of thing.)

i know violetshipping is your otp but do you have any heartshipping headcanons/thoughts?

The one that I think about the most, which is probably not enough because brain is violetshipping 24/7, is the shred of resentment that canonverse Ryou might nurse toward canonverse Yugi pre-relationship or even early into the relationship. Basically playing with the dichotomy of Yugi missing his other self while Ryou is more in the "good riddance" camp toward his own. They both lost something categorically similar after a technically similar experience, but their experiences weren't even in the same ballpark. And maybe some jealousy at how Yugi seemingly got "the better end" of the deal when it came to spiritual hauntings.

Otherwise, they have a lot of shared interests that would be great ways to deepen their friendship/relationship. While Yugi isn't a horror fanatic in the same way, I don't see him as squeamish. Who else is Ryou going to watch the latest horror flick with? (Definitely not Jounouchi, bless him, I love my boy, but he would be annoying as fuck at a horror movie. I am also a scaredy cat and forcing your friend who is not into that stuff is both a dick move and a recipe for an unfun group hangout.) They'd both be into European board games that would take two hours to set up and explain the rules of where others in their friend group might have checked out after 30 minutes.

There's a lot of depth to be plumbed in their one-on-one friendship/hangout time that will feel categorically different than Yugi's friendship with Jounouchi.

Also love the idea of Yugi realizing he doesn't actually know Ryou that well or Ryou not being a person that shares much of his inner life/feelings despite his friendliness. Like great guy, tries to be helpful, but months down the line, you realize you've revealed all sorts of fears/insecurities with him, but you don't know the first thing about his favorite color or music or if he's ever felt sad.

TLDR; Their fluffiness/softness is endearing, but their potential for angst is also off-the-charts.
