Bonus: A soft tummy appreciation moment

Guys I've tried so many times to write about how insane I am about Charles and Edwin and their relationship outside of a romantic and platonic lens- like idk what I saw from Charles in Edwin's confession was total unconditional love. He wasn't dismissive, he wasn't lying to Edwin (not that he ever would abt something like that). Although he tried to ease whatever tension had formed in the stairwell with the Orpheus and Euridyce joke (which I do to because strong feelings are scary), he immediately locks in when Edwin expresses that this isn't something that should be lighthearted. And Charles acknowledges that. And he takes him and holds him steady as he tells him the truth. He doesn't feel the same. But that does not mean that he does not love Edwin. There's no one else he would go to Hell and back for.

And it doesn't make things weird. It doesn't cause tension because, above all else, they're Charles and Edwin, Edwin and Charles. The Dead Boy Detectives. They love eachother and they don't need something from the other for that to be true. They have a bond built on Agape love. An unconditional love that, no matter what form it takes, will continue to thrive into the afterlife because that's just how they are.

so the thing is I don't really give a shit about shipping edwin with charles or monty or the cat king or whatever. I'm much more interested by his internal conflict.

I don't want charles to magically be like 'oh wow it turns out I do love you back yippee let's live in domestic bliss forever after!'. I want edwin to grapple with the guilt that comes from being attracted to your friend (sucks bad. from experience). I want him to eventually get over his feelings, except for in moments of weakness where they rear their head and hiss in his ear and goddamn he thought he was done with this, it's not fair to charles.

I don't want him and the cat king to fuck and do kisses. I want edwin to deny and deny the way he feels until he has to admit to himself and grapple with his sexual attraction to him. he doesnt even like the cat king, why is he so attracted? would charles think badly of him if he knew? does this make him a bad person, would he have been condemned to hell even without being sacrificed? would he belong to that lust room? the people in there did try to pull him in after all.

internal conflict !!! self flagellation !!!! guilt and shame !!!!!

can we talk about Max standing back there at the snow ball, sweating bullets and confused and scared out of her mind and not far from crying, and the moment she realizes El isn't also scared, isn't just there to hold hand and run like the last two girls in a horror movie, but that she's actually come to fight for her?

can we talk about Max watching El put herself between her and some kind of superpowered demon murderer guy, not just bodily shielding her like she's done in the past but actually walking toward this guy to keep him far away from her. and speaking first and saying she'll kill him if he touches her. do you think Max has ever felt like anybody cared about her half that much in her entire life before? do you think she's ever even seen anyone go to bat for a person like this? let alone think anyone would for her, after she's spent the last 6 months or whatever totally closed off because she feels undeserving of love?

can we also talk about how Max has never heard El's voice sound anything like this before? yeah she's fought and screamed at monsters before, but this is different. that's her soft spoken little friend who she only recently taught how to know if she likes a shirt or not, and how to stand up for herself to some cheeto fingered 13 year old boy. and now here she is getting up in a demon's face for her with a level of cold fury and authority that Max probably never imagined hearing come out of her. I just. I need to sit down
