I've been hesitant to post my poems and things because though I'm not a "poet" per-se I'd hate for people to take my stuff and use it without source or credit... but what the hell... here goes something. 😬
Edit: And just like that, I got scared again and privatized my poems that I'd posted thus far. 😮‍💨

You are the future. You are the innovators. You are listeners. You are the doers. You are the inspiration. So wish I could be there to experience a thoughtful redesign of a conference experience. Lead on! I am cheering from the sidelines!

I'm being pulled into supporting and developing a leadership initiative at work, but I've decided to go all in with it. From "Dare to Lead" - @brenebrown, p 13. "...we should never underestimate the benefit to a child of having a place to belong - even one - where they can take off their armor. It can and often does change the trajectory of their life." #daretolead #safeschools #bravespace https://www.instagram.com/p/CTAFHvgL4c9/?utm_medium=tumblr

Just like some people accept Jesus Christ into their hearts, many of us accept the dominant culture into our hearts. What that means is that we walk this life distrusting everyone. We walk in fear thinking people are out to get us. We also go about our day not expressing how we feel and being compulsively dishonest, communicating things we don't really mean (like saying "sorry" constantly) and demanding the same from others. I say "how are you?" but I don't really want to know how you feel so please don't share your shit. I say "fine, thank you" but I am dying inside so understand my passive-aggressive tone and piss off or I'll verbally murder your guts for no reason. We are walking on eggshells whilst simultaneously shaming people if they chose not to enter this violent and punitive dynamic. Afraid. Anxious. Tired. Defensive. Detached. Isolated. Unseen. But with a brimming smile on our profile picture. The more we remove our deeper self from our faces, our actions and our expressions, the more we mutilate our heart and close it to the love that is available and the more we invest ourselves in a cycle of fear and disconnection. However, we call this kind of behaviour "being well-adapted". I am calling out that bullshit. There is nothing normal or beneficial about hiding and being ridden with fears. I want this world to be experienced as a brave space where I can be me, either silent in one corner witnessing or being loud and dancing, expressing all the joy that my child's heart has to share or all the rage and sadness when I am down and all the bliss when I am in the zone. I want to be heard, seen and received. I want to witness others and receive them in my heart. I want what I know is possible. I want spaces where I can disrupt and break my abidance to the dominant culture. And I want you to have it too. Join the brave space. 'All (wo)men are the same!' - No, you act the same with each and one of them, so you get the same results. 'All politicians are the same, corrupt and stupid!' - No, you relate to politics and politicians the same way regardless of the party or the person in power and you get more-less the same experience. 'It's always the same thing with my father/mother/sibling/partner! They dont change!' - No, you are triggered in the same way, you react to them just like many times before and, like a mad person, you expect different results. It doesn't work, or does it? Acting like a badly programmed automaton that commits the same silly mistake over and over; always "tropezando de nuevo con la misma piedra". Disruption is the cure for this silly disease of our time. More importantly, disrupting a pattern is fun! For example, when you want to nag your partner about them leaving the kitchen cabinet doors open (again!!!) just say "potato". Or do a funky dance. Or go take a sh1t. Simply do something different from your usual BS! Observe yourself redirecting the energy from the trigger. Observe your compulsion to right a wrong, to be obeyed, to punish, to control an outcome. Observe it until you are sick of your own robotic impulses and lack of imagination. Then, start wondering, what else? "What else could I do instead of having a tantrum? What other options are available? What do I need to let go of? What voice of mine needs to be heard?" Dare to be a disruption agent. Dare to have fun reinventing your relationships. --- Wanna explore your patterns and disrupt them in a fun way within a brave space? Join me at #taboocafe. I AM Blessed I FIGHT FOR My sons, and those who don’t yet have VOICES @taproottheatre Is joining in the @ghostlightproject, to be a light and a brave space. I couldn’t be there with everyone tonight, because I had a standing engagement to read this book to one of my boys in this chair before he went to sleep. We adopted our boys as embryos. They didn’t have voices yet. But their donor parents fought for them before we knew them them, and we fought for them after we adopted them. Sometimes people without voices, like our boys were before they were born, don’t get included in efforts like this. Sometimes they’re specifically excluded. But I have a voice, and I’m invited, so they’re invited too. I’m honored to be a light for them, and thankful that Taproot can be one of their brave spaces. #ghostlightproject #bealight #bravespace

Interview with Hollis
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hollis over Zoom video!  Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/producer Hollis (full name Hollis Wong-Wear) announces ‘Subliminal,’ her debut solo album out this fall. The forthcoming record was recorded during the pandemic shutdown, with artistic collaborations held over Zoom. The new single “Less Like,” produced by producer/recording artist Sweater Beats (Lizzo, Panic! At the Disco) is out today. The slick alt-pop track, reminiscent of a Clairio song, showcases Hollis’ “hypnotic” (Billboard) vocals.   The video for “Less Like” sees Hollis sporting eccentric 70s style dresses and jumpsuits as she traverses through flamboyantly colorful shape-shifting scenes. Shot and directed by Hollis’ close friend, frequent collaborator, and recording artist KO aka Koala, the visual was created by a team of queer and POC women, continuing Hollis’ tradition of collaborating with underrepresented talent. Hollis, who added “recording engineer” to her resume with ‘Subliminal,’ teamed up with Macklemore collaborator Ryan Lewis as co-writer on her upcoming single “Let Me Not” (Hollis earned a 2014 Grammy nomination for her work on Macklemore and Lewis’ The Heist, including vocals and songwriting for their hit “White Walls” and video production for “Thrift Shop” and “Wings”).  Single “Grace Lee” is a moving, introspective tribute to the late Chinese-American social activist Grace Lee Boggs and features writing credits from Hollis’ frequent collaborator and live accompanist Chucky Kim.  Community support, equality, and grassroots mobilization drive many of Hollis’ initiatives. The tour concept for her February 2020 EP half-life, “Hollis Does Brunch,” was designed to unite artists, small business owners, and organizers in person; during the pandemic, she pivoted to live-streamed Sunday gatherings. The series raised close to $30,000 for COVID mutual aid, Black-led organizing, and community causes, leading the Seattle Times to call it “an unexpected grassroots fundraiser.” Hollis’ early days as a teen slam poet and spoken word artist — along with inspiration from Seattle’s grassroots hip hop scene and its intersection with social justice — laid the groundwork for her ongoing appearances as a speaker and moderator. Hollis speaks on topics such as empowered creativity and independent artistry. She is a host and writer for Breaking Down the Biz with Splice (“What is Music Copyright?”) and the lead producer of Take Creative Control: The Series, a program that features artists of color and their personal and professional stories as it relates to intellectual property law. She is also a co-curator of Bravespace, a compilation of Asian American recording artists and composers presented by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, due for release this fall (and including Hollis’ track “Subliminal”).   About Hollis Wong-Wear: Hollis is a modern-day Renaissance woman: recording artist, vocalist, songwriter, creative producer, and community advocate. With her roots in spoken word and slam poetry through the nationally recognized Youth Speaks program, Hollis is passionate about how creativity and the arts fuel and shape civic discourse and is dedicated to lending her voice and capacities towards vibrant social equity. Known best for her collaborations with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ("White Walls," for which she was Grammy-nominated), Shawn Wasabi ("Otter Pop") and her band The Flavr Blue, Hollis' solo music -- which she calls existential alt or "sad girl jams" -- showcases her singular voice and rich, daring lyricism. Her debut solo EP half-life was released in February 2020; her self-directed video for her single "All My Weight" premiered on Billboard, and she was named one of Pigeons & Planes' Best New Artists 2020 upon its release. Originally from the Bay Area, Hollis Wong-Wear emerged from the independent hip hop scene in Seattle and has become an in-demand songwriter in her current home of Los Angeles. Alongside her music, Hollis is an impassioned advocate for empowered creativity, a Google Next Gen Policy Leader, and is a frequent featured speaker on the intersection of art, activism, and creators' rights.
