Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) dir. Jake Kasdan. 7.3/10

The fucking horse gdi. It even jumped into the lake.

Yaaa at the guy feeling more pain than women. lmaoo.

We love this acting range. Jack black a1. Why was Awkwafina so meant for Danny Devito’s role? Still not used to Nick Jonas being in this.

Spoiler: [About the gang from the first movie all coming back to town from college. They agree to meet at the breakfast spot, Nora’s, the following morning. Spencer and Martha had been broken up. Spencer currently has his grandpa, Eddie, visiting. That night, Spencer tinkers with the Jumanji game and goes back in. The crew meet up and don’t know where he is so goes to his place where Eddie was meeting Milo, his estranged friend of 15 years. The crew rummage through the house and see the game and go in to save him. Bethany ends up not getting sucked in so goes to Alex to get his help. In the game, they never got to choose characters because it was broken so entered as different characters. Martha is still Ruby Roundhouse. Fridge ended up being Professor Sheldon, Eddie became Dr. Bravestone, and Milo became Franklin Finbar. The grandparents didn’t understand what was happening and will take some time to figure it out even though they are constantly being taught. Nigel takes them on a new adventure, which turns out to be the next level of the game. Their objective is to get the falcon jewel back from the antagonist, Jurgen the Brutal. He had taken it away from the natives even though the jewel brings in prosperity in crops and whatnot. The new crew are dropped into a desert and have to dune buggy off a cliff to avoid aggressive ostriches. They then end up seeing Jurgen and stopped a random thief from stealing the key for the jewel. The thief turns out to be Spencer. They fight their way out. They follow an ex girlfriend of Dr. Bravestone to figure things out. Fridge and Martha end up getting a jumanji berry and discovering a river that allows them to switch characters, but they still revert to who they started as. Spencer steals a camel and Milo has a new skill to understand all languages, including those of animals. They get away and end up fighting mandrills while crossing a maze of bridges. They meet up with Alex and Bethany, but Bethany entered as a horse. After struggling a lot, they kept dying. They find another river and change characters to what they’re suited for so that they have the best chance of beating the game. Martha is still Ruby. Spencer is Dr. Bravestone. Bethany is Sheldon. Fridge is Finbar. Milo is the horse, Eddie is Ming, the thief. They enter Jurgen’s fortress as Bethany and Fridge pretend to be the Brothers Kababik, who are guests of Jurgen atm. Spencer and Martha climb an ice wall to get in. Milo and Eddie are captured and imprisoned. Spencer and Martha save Eddie. Alex saves Milo from a boobytrapped cage after 2 deaths. Jurgen asks the brothers kababik where their sister is, because she is to be his wife. He was going to kill them until Martha shows up and claims to be the bride. As they are about to be wed, Jurgen’s butler receives a message saying the real brothers will be late in arriving. When realizing that they are impostors, a fight ensues. Jurgen leaves via blimp as he sees that Dr. Bravestone is in possession of the Jumanji berry. Dr. Bravestone stops the blimp and attacks hinm with the berry, which is his weakness. He falls to his death. Milo has wings, turns out, and Eddie flies on him to get Spencer. They got the jewel and Eddie flies with Milo to show it to the sun. The sun is what it needs to give the power. They shout Jumanji and win the game. During their journey, Milo and Eddie fixed their falling out. They were estranged because Milo went into retirement and sold their joint restaurant while Eddie wanted to work until he died. Milo came to restore their friendship that day because he is sick and dying. He requests to be left in the game because he finally has wings. Everyone gets back. Spencer’s mom comes home and Eddie says that Spencer taught him how to play video games. Eddie also gets rehired by the restaurant. At the end, the guy in charge of fixing the heater in Spencer��s basement sees the game. While Spencer and his crew are eating at Nora’s a flock of ostriches run by.]

Jumanji: The Next Level

I saw the most recent Jumanji a while ago, but I figured this post is better late than never! Fair warning if you haven’t seen it yet, spoilers!

My thoughts on the movie:

I noticed that there was more electric lighting? I’ve got to say that the way Jumanji throws modern and adventure tropes together is a bit Mad Max, but I love it! And it works bc they don't try to explain it at all.

All the different environments? Jurgen's people and the Avian Tribe and whoever the alliance was going to be with? That world building is straight out of the cartoon and I adore it! Give us Jumanji lore!

I love how Bethany and Martha are so close and supportive. Like I know Martha and Spencer are the Canon Couple but Martha x Bethany is wholesome.

Spencer. Spencer is both a mood and the worst. I'd honestly be interested in a "Spencer becomes the next Van Pelt" plot, but I think we diverted that in this one.

Okay so I really really love how Jumanji has kept up the edgy dark aesthetic for its villains, including the guyliner. Russell was the best, but Jurgen and his bois pulled it off.

THE MOMENT WHEN JURGEN IS MOURNING HIS HYENA TRAINER AND SAYING HOW MUCH HE LOVED HIM AND YET IS FEEDING THE MAN TO THE HYENAS?! BRUTAL 👏🏻

Awkwafina’s thief avatar! I was wondering what new skill sets there would be and that was so much YES.

Can we talk about how the last movie was Spencer learning to be confident no matter what he's physically like, but this movie is about him being comfortable with HIMSELF? Jumanji knows.

How Bethany went to Alex for help!!! And he agreed and makes a dad joke!!! He's so great.

The basement where Spencer left Jumanji echoes the attic where Peter and Judy first found the board game, especially with the handyman / exterminator parallel. Discuss.

I feel like everyone got down to one life really quickly this time? It was Stressful.

The entire plot with Eddie and Milo had such an amazing message. That was fantastic. Like I said, Jumanji knows.

Okay question: What was Jurgen making an alliance with the Brothers for anyway? Did he need their family's help to take over Jumanji? Did he just want an epic wife? It was important enough that he stole the Life Jewel for it so...

High key barbarian aesthetic btw. Nice. Was anyone else reminded of that Norse myth with Thor's hammer getting stolen and Thor having to wear a wedding dress and all that? I got those vibes.

How we got both Welcome To The Jungle and Baby I Love Your Way? And how It's All In The Game got the credits? 💚

I love knowing what eunuch means bc I was laughing about 5 seconds before everyone else in the theatre.

IT WAS NORA'S DINER LIKE AUNT NORA'S DINER LIKE AUNT NORA AUNT NORA!!! I FORGOT WE WERE IN BRANTFORD!!! THAT WAS THE BEST, 11/10!!!

THE MID CREDITS SCENE!!!!! THANK GOD FOR VIDEO GAME NERDS? WE'RE BACK IN BUSINESS!

My one complaint? No character named Van Pelt. It's a Law of Jumanji, bro. You could have named a side character Van Pelt just bc. Mention him. Pls. If they make another movie, I require my Van Pelt.

A/N: I love the Jumanji movies! I’m so glad you asked for a Fridge fic! I love his character! I don’t remember exactly what was said of course because its still in theaters, so wording will be wrong. Story line will be about the same. I was thinking of making a Jumanji story! Who do you guys think should fall for our lovely reader?

SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED JUMANJI THE NEXT LEVEL!!! I’LL TRY NOT TO GO INTO MUCH DETAIL BUT GET THE POINT ACROSS. I WILL SKIP THE ENDING OF THE MOVIE SO I DON’T SPOIL ANYTHING.

I walk out of the bathroom before pulling out my cellphone from my pocket. I smile widely when I see that my boyfriend, Anthony AKA Fridge, has texted me.

I smile to myself. I’m so nervous. I’ve heard all about Martha, Spencer and Bethany, but I haven’t actually met them. I met Fridge in our college English class and we hit it off. It’s been 2 years and we’re going strong.

I haven’t met the group yet because the last two years I spent holiday at my parents house, while Fridge came here. This year my family decided to go on vacation, while I decided here to be with Fridge for Christmas. It was fine, I had some family in his town anyway. My uncle lives close to Fridge in the town and he said I can come stay with him if I wanted too.

I look at Mrs. Johnson and smiles.

“Fridge texted me and told me to meet him at Nora’s to meet everyone.”

She smiles widely, “That’s wonderful. Go on, dear. Go see them. I can finish everything up here.”

“Are you sure, Mrs. Johnson? I can-” Before I finish she cuts me off.

“Go dear. Spend some time with Anthony and his friends.” She smiles.

“Thank you!”

I quickly grab my jacket and walk out the door. I walk to the sidewalk and down the way that I remember going before. Fridge took our car to train today so I couldn’t drive there. It wasn’t too cold out today so I didn’t mind walking. After about 10 minutes I make it to the restaurant. I can see Fridge in the mirror, sitting with two girls at a table. I take a deep breath and walk inside the building. Fridge looks up and smiles widely.

“Y/N!” He stands up and walks over to me.

He pulls me into a huge hug. I hug him back, feeling more comfortable.

“Is this her?” I hear one of the girls say.

Fridge pulls from the hug and smiles. “Yep. This is her. Y/N, this is Bethany.” He points to the blonde haired girl, “and this is Martha.” He points to the red haired girl.

“Hi! It’s very nice to meet you!” I say, putting my hand out.

Bethany pulls me into a hug shocking me. I hug back, giggling slightly.

“Fridge has told us so much about you!” Bethany says, excitedly.

I giggle, “He told me a lot about you guys.”

She pulls from the hug and Martha shakes my hand. We sit down and talk for awhile, having a great time. They noticed as time goes on that Spencer never showed up.

Fridge looks at me then at the other girls, “Come on, lets go see what’s going on with Spencer. Y/N, if you want you can go back to my house.”

“No. I’ll go with you guys. I wanna meet Spencer.” I say, looking at him.

“Are you sure? We can-” Fridge starts.

“No babe. I want to go with you.” I smile before grabbing my coat.

Fridge smiles and pays for our meal. We all get into the cars and drive to a house that Fridge says belonged to Spencer’s family. Fridge holds my hand as we all walk to the front door. Bethany pushes the doorbell and we wait.

An older, short man opens the door in his robe.

“Anthony?” He says.

“Grandpa Eddie?” Fridge says.

“Come in! Come in!” Eddie says, moving out of the doorway.

“I hope we’re not bothering you.” Fridge says leading me inside of the house.

“Oh you’re not bothering me. Now who are these lovely ladies?” He asks, leaning against the wall.

“This is Bethany, Martha, and my girlfriend Y/N.” Fridge says, pointing us out.

Eddie points to Martha, “You’re Spencer’s little girlfriend?”

Martha stutters for a second, “Uhh, yeah.”

He turns toward me, “And Anthony. You have a girlfriend now!”

Fridge chuckles a little, “Yes sir I do.”

We find out that Spencer wasn’t even home. His grandfather thought he was with us. Miles Walker, an older man who had a business with Eddie, is also here, much to Eddie’s disappointment. Fridge talks to them for minute before taking my hand and walking to the kitchen. A few seconds later, the sounds of drums are playing through the house.

Fridge looks at the girls, “I thought it was over.”

“It’s supposed to be!” Bethany says.

We find out way to the basement to see a broken game system on the table.

“Spencer probably went back in.” Martha says, looking at us.

“No! I’m not going back in! We almost died!” Fridge says, shaking his head.

“Wait! What’s going on?” I ask confused.

“3 years ago, we got sucked into a video game. It’s called Jumanji.” Bethany says. “You know he would go back into the game for us. Any of us.”

Fridge sighs and takes my hand, “Alright. Y/N, you stay here.”

“No! I’m going in. I’m not letting you guys go alone. You may have done this before but you’re not going alone.”

Martha reaches forward and grabs the controller. I feel a weird tingle going through my body. I look down at my hands to see a green mist taking over my body.

“Not again! We didn’t even pick our characters.” I hear Fridge yell as he gets sucked into the game.

I scream as I see my body get absorbed into the game system. I open my eyes as I am thrown from a space in the sky. I scream loud as the ground gets closer. I move so I land on my feet and I look around.

“Holy shit.” I stand straight. “Fridge?”

I see a woman in a small shirt and shorts stand up. I look confused. She looks at her hands before looking around.

“M-Martha?” I ask.

She looks at me and nods, “Y/N?”

I nod, “This..this is Jumanji?”

She nods before looking around. A fatter man stands up from the bushes.

“Bethany?” She asks the man.

“No. Its Fridge. Why would-”

He looks down at his hands then his outfit, “Damn it! Why the hell am I the fat white guy?”

“We didn’t get to pick our characters so we probably just got sucked in to a open character.” Martha explains.

“Last time I was at least black! This ain’t fair! You both are hot!” He says, pointing to us. “Wait. Y/N? You’re a new avatar.”

I look confused before looking down at my body. I see I’m wearing a black tight outfit. I walk over toward the water to see what I look like.

Fridge walks over and pulls me back.

“Stay away from the water.”

He explains what happened last time someone got too close to the water. I nod and stay close to him. A tall, buff guy walks over. Turns out that Grandpa Eddie got sucked into the game and took over the avatar of Dr. Smolder Bravestone. Miles took over the character of Franklin Finbar who used to be Fridges character.

Fridge tries to explain the rules of the game to Miles and Eddie but being older, they don’t seem to understand. I hear a noise so I look up above Fridge. A huge snake is right above him. I run over and tackle him out of the way as the snake comes down to eat him. I land on top of him and he looks up at me.

“You just saved me.” He whispers.

“Well yeah.” I giggle slightly.

I stand helping him up, but we look up as we see a hippo come on to land. Miles are saying some facts about it. That’s when we all decide to run away from it. We run toward the plane that was flying above us. The plane lands so we all get inside. Turns out the came is totally different from when they played before. We now have to save a stone from guy and show it to the light.

“Where exactly-” Before I can finish my sentence, Nigel interrupts me.

“Elizabeth Widow, Martial Arts Expert and Franklin Finbar’s girlfriend.” Nigel says.

Miles looks over at me and smiles widely, “Now I have a very beautiful girlfriend!”

I giggle and look over at Fridge.

“Oh hell no!” Fridge says, shaking his head. “I was Mouse way before you were! She was destined to be mine.”

I laugh and smiles. “Don’t worry Fridge. I’m all yours.”

Nigel explains we have to drop out of the plane and land in the desert. Just then he pulls a lever and the back of the plane opens up, causing all of us to fall out of the back of it. I scream as the sand gets closer. I land on the ground and tries to stop myself from rolling. I land on my back and I go to stand up but that's when Fridge bumps into me and causes me to roll down with him. I cough as we finally stop.

“Sorry babe.” He says, coughing with me.

We stand up and look around for everyone else. We walk over to Martha, trying to figure out how to get out of this shit. Fridge pushes his chest and a big screen pops out to show his strengths and weakness. Turns out Shelley’s new strength is Geometry. Ruby’s new strength is nunchucks. Smolder gains a weakness which is switchblade. Finbar can now speak tons of languages.

Marth looks at me, “Elizabeth is a new avatar so we don’t know anything about her.”

Fridge walks over, “Here let me show you how to bring it up.”

I smirk at Fridge, “Go ahead.”

His eyes widen and he pushes my left breast, causing a purple screen to pop out of my shirt.

Strengths: Martial Arts, Gymnastics, Climbing, Blending In, Finbar.

Weakness: Heat (Deserts)

“Your only weakness is the desert? Man that ain’t fair!” Fridge says.

I laugh. “Probably because I’m only wearing black and it gets hot!”

“That and that you can’t do any of your strengths.” Martha smirks slightly looking at Fridge.

“Mine’s cake! It makes me explode!” He says.

“Then we better hurry and get her out of the desert before she explodes from the heat.”

“Wait. Why is her strength Finbar?” He asks looking at the screen again.

“Probably works well with his avatar. Since they are dating.”

“Man! Why can't I be him again!” He shakes his head walking away slightly.

The next few hours go back so fast. We were in dune-buggies running away from the Ostriches. I grabbed one with Miles and Eddie. Martha and Fridge crashed theirs causing us to pick them up. Then we made it to a town. We walk into a building to see the guy with the stone around his neck. He is telling the story about a guy betrayed him and he is now feeding the guy to his hyenas. The lights go out and a woman, who turned out to be Spencer, stole the stone.

We escape from the gang and Spencer explains he was in a bad place and wanted to feel wanted again. He ended up being this woman instead of Smolder. He looks over at me.

“Who..Who is this?”

“This is my girlfriend, Y/N. She came in with us to save your ass. Her avatar is some badass woman named Elizabeth.” Fridge explains.

We split up to grab different things. Martha stayed to help Spencer and Miles get camels. Eddie guarded them, while Fridge and I followed the woman in red. We made it to a pool of water with a tree. Hanging in the tree is a seed that we would end up needing. In the water looks like there are electric eels.

“How the hell are we going to get that seed. It’s not like we can-” Fridge starts.

I walk over to the wall and jump up high to grab a light. I swing around, letting go to grab another light. I climb up to jump onto a tree branch. I swing and jump for the seed in the tree, causing me to fall into the water.

“Y/N!” Fridge yells loudly walking toward the water.

I resurface and hold up the seed. I swim over to the edge. Fridge puts a foot into the water, seeing its safe before grabbing my hand helping me out.

“I got ya babe. I got ya. That was badass!”

I laugh as I climb out and hold his hand a little too long. We are thrown away from each other, landing on the ground.

“Ow! Shit! That hurt!” I say sitting up.

I look over at Fridge to see my Elizabeth avatar.

“Fridge?” I whisper.

He looks up and his eyes widen.

“Y/N?” He looks down at his body then smiles. “Thank god! I was tired of that guy! He can't do anything.”

“Fridge switch back!”

“I’m sorry babe but I like this character!” He stands up.

“Don’t you dare touch my boobs!” I say quickly, standing up.

“Sorry sweetheart but that was the first thing I did! I wanna try that flippy stuff you did!”

He runs over to the same light I started at. He flips almost like I did but less as expertly. He jumps into the tree but he flips too fast and flies into the sky.

“Fridge!”

He lands into the water and resurfaces.

“That was so awesome!”

I shake my head and walks over to take his hand. I help him out and as soon as he stands out of the water, we are thrown away from each other again. We switched back.

“Yeah!” I cheer to myself, seeing I’m Elizabeth again.

“That’s not fair!”

“You didn’t use her right anyway! Come on, lets go find everyone.” I grab his hand and pull him out toward the others.

We get on some camels and I look out into the desert.

“Umm...guys. I can’t get too warm out there.” I say, looking back at them.

“Here dear. Use my hat.” Miles says, taking off his hat. “This should help a little bit.”

“Oh...thank you Mr. Walker.” I say, taking the hat.

I put it on my head and climb on to my camel.

“He said you’re very light and he likes you.” Miles says, telling me what the camel is thinking.

“Awe thank you Frankie.” I say, petting him.

We all venture into the desert. Fridge walking beside me with Spencer and Martha in front of us. Miles and Eddie are last in line. During this adventure we find out that Miles was the one that wanted to close down the restaurant and Eddie didn’t, that’s why they weren’t friends anymore. They had a little fight and Miles climbs off his camel to confront Eddie. We all stop our camels and I wave my face to keep from getting too hot but it isn't working.

The wind starts to pick up a little in the desert causing me to lose the hat Miles let me borrow. It flies back hitting him in the face. My eyes widen and I look right at Fridge. He notices the sweat sliding down my face. He turns back toward Miles.

“Mr. Walker! Throw me-”

Before he can finish, my body explodes. A loud ding happens and I start falling from the sky. I land on my feet near the camel and I look around.

“Y/N!” Fridge says, running over.

He pulls me into his arms. I hold him close.

“Let’s get you out of the sun. We can't have that happen again!”

That’s exactly what we did. We rode the camels to a jungle area. The Camels wouldn't take us any further so I kiss my camels head and follow everyone else. We get the next level which is a bunch of wooden bridges. Fridge realizes that this means is the Geometry part of his strength. What happened next shocked us all.

Mandrill monkeys start popping out of the trees. We’re jumping from one bridge to another but we all get separated. I jump toward Fridge and land on his bridge but the other side of the bridge snaps. I quickly grab his hand to keep him from falling. I pull him up onto the side of the bridge I’m on.

“I’m supposed to be the one saving you.” Fridge says.

I giggle slightly but we hurry away. Miles almost fell off as well but Eddie saved him. We all get away. A man on a horse runs up to us.

“Alex?” Martha asks the man.

“Hey guys!” He says.

“What are you doing here? Where Bethany?” Fridge asks.

“Right here.” He pets the horse. “the horse is name is Cyclone.”

“The horse is a character in the game too?” Spencer asks.

“Yep!”

“Wait...Alex Vreek?” I ask, just making sure.

“Yeah, have we met?” He asks.

“Uncle Alex. It’s me, Y/N.” I say smiling.

“Y/N! What are you doing here?” He says, walking over giving me a hug.

“I’m dating Fridge. I came to help Spencer.” I answer him.

“Wait...Fridge?” He turns toward Fridge.

Fridge waves slightly, “Hey.”

Alex walks over to Fridge and stares at him.

“You better take good care of my niece.” Alex says, staring him down.

“I will Alex. I love her too much.” Fridge says, watching Alex.

My eyes widen slightly. That was the first time that he has ever said that. Before we can finish this conversation, Martha shows us a pool of water that looks just like the water that the tree was in. Fridge smiles at me before telling everyone what the water does.

Bethany, Spencer, Eddie, Fridge, Miles and Fridge all jump into the water, leaving me, Martha and Uncle Alex. We run to the bottom of the hit to see them when they come out. They all get their original bodies back, leaving Eddie to get into the body Spencer had. Miles had gotten the body of Cyclone the horse.

Fridge walks over to me and smiles.

“I’m back baby!”

I laugh slightly and hug him, not caring that he’s all wet.

“I’d rather be hugging you as Finbar than you as Shelley.” I whisper to him.

He smiles widely and pulls back slightly from the hug. He looks down at me, it’s only a little since he’s only an inch taller than me, before pulling me into a kiss. A spark shoots through us, causing everyone around us to fly back. We pull away quickly, turning to look at them.

“Woah...” Fridge says.

Martha stands up, “Now that’s why her strength is Finbar.”

“That’s so awesome!” Spencer says, chuckling.

FAST FORWARD- Don’t wanna spoil it for anyone

We all end up in Spencer’s basement where we started the game. I look around the room, seeing who all landed here with us. Before I can move, I get pull to a body and I look up. Fridge smiles down at me before pulling me in for another kiss. I smile into the kiss and pulls him closer. We pull away after a few seconds and he looks into my eyes.

“I meant what I said...” He whispers.

I look confused, “What do you mean?”

“When I said I love you. I meant it. I really do, Y/N.” He whispers again.

I blush and smile up at him.

“I love you too Anthony.” I whisper, pulling him down for another kiss.

“Hey! Be careful! Last time you did that we all got hurt!” Alex says, catching our attention.

Everyone in the room laughs, including Eddie. I giggle and walk over to Alex and gives him a hug.

“I missed you too Uncle Alex.”

He chuckles and hugs me back, “You gotta bring Fridge around to meet everyone.”

“I will be sure to do that.” I whisper, before pulling away.

“Come on. I’m hungry.” Fridge says.

We all laugh and I take his hand and we walk upstairs. Today has been a very eventful day. I’m glad I got to experience it with Fridge and his friends.

The movie is set 2 years after the first film, called Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The main characters - Spencer Gilpin, Anthony "Fridge" Johnson, Martha Kaply and Bethany Walker have separated because of college, but they plan to meet during Christmas break. The night before the day of reunion, Spencer takes out the Jumanji game because he feels like he has no purpose. He is sucked into the game, making him not attend the reunion. His friends are suspicious, so they visit his place. There, they encounter Eddie (Spencer's grandfather) and Milo Walker (Eddie's ex-friend and former business partner), who have visited him. They discover what happened to Spencer and all of them get sucked into the game, except Bethany.

In the game, they all get their own avatars: Martha is Ruby Roundhouse, Fridge is Professor Sheldon Oberon, Eddie is Dr. Smolder Bravestone, and Milo is Franklin "Mouse" Finbar. Eddie and Milo are new to Jumanji so after the group explain what's happening, they meet the non-playable character (NPC) named Nigel Billingsley. Nigel informs them that Jumanji is suffering from a severe drought. To finish the game, they must end the drought by getting a magic necklace stolen by Jurgen the Brutal, a warlord. Bethany goes to Alex Vreeke, their previous Jumanji companion, for aid.

After escaping a flock of fast ostriches in the desert, the group finds Spencer in the body of Ming Fleetfoot (a skilled thief). Spencer agrees to help the group after blaming himself for the whole situation. They attempt to escape the desert, during which they collect the Jumanji Berry and discover a body of glowing green water that allows them to switch bodies. After some arguments, Eddie and Milo reveals the reason why their friendship ended is because Milo sold their restaurant without Eddie's knowledge, which forced both of them into retirement. Eddie also discovers that Milo is going to die of an illness and they make peace. After the group pass through a series of rope bridges, they reunite with Alex (in Jefferson McDonough's body) and Bethany (in the bod of Cyclone, a black horse whom can only be understood by Finbar).

The group work together and leave the desert. They find a river of the same glowing green water, which they use. Spencer, Bethany and Fridge go back to their original avatars - respectively Bravestone, Sheldon Oberon, and Mouse Finbar. Eddie and Milo also take on the avatars of Ming and Cyclone, respectively. Immediately after this, Jurgen's men kidnap Eddie and Milo. The group decide to split up and secretly enter Jurgen's fortress to rescue them and steal the necklace. While Martha and Spencer climb the fortress' ice wall, she asks him why he became distant. He admits that he feels insecure about himself seeing Martha's success in college. Martha comforts him, saying that he needs his friends when he is insecure. After infiltrating the fortress, a battle breaks out and Spencer chase Jurgen to his airship while the others fight Jurgen's men. Spencer discovers Jurgen's weakness to the Jumanji Berry and uses it to his advantage, weakening him enough to steal the necklace and defeat Jurgen.

The group return the necklace to Nigel, which allows them to go home. Milo says he wants to stay behind. The rest of the group go home after saying their goodbyes. Spencer teaches Eddie about video games. Now that Eddie has gotten over his anger, he convinces the new owner of his old diner, Nora, to hire him as a manager.

1. What life lessons can be learned from the movie?

If you're not okay with your life, let your friends know and lean on them a little bit. Let your ego down and make amends with your friend if you notice your friendship has become distant due to an argument you two had.

2. What part of the story told by the movie was the most powerful? Why?

When Spencer and Matilda were hanging over a cliff in the video game world, they were vulnerable and talked heart to heart as to why Spencer put himself in a dangerous situation. It was because he wanted to be okay, since his life was miserable and he kept distancing himself from his friends. It was powerful because I could feel that I related to what he felt.

3. Who was your favorite character in the movie? Why?

Eddie taking on the avatar of Dr. Braveheart in the Jumanji world. His funny grandfather attitude and charm paired with the serious and buff appearance of Dwayne Johnson (the actor) created this polarizing effect. He looked like a stud but had the mentality of a goofy grandfather. I found it amusing.

4. Did anything that happened in the movie remind you of something that has occurred in your own life or that you have seen occur to others?

When Milo chose to remain as a horse in the video game world to live out his last days, that reminded me of my secret desire to become a peaceful animal living simply, basking in the inner peace that comes with living close to nature.

The Mosley Review: Jumanji: The Next Level

Honestly, who doesn't love a good and fun adventure story. The last film had a lot to prove being a sequel to the beloved 90's film of the same name and with complete shock, it succeed tremendously. Welcome to the Jungle captured the spirit of adventure and heart the original Jumanji had while delivering a great message. This film continues that tradition with an even more impressive amount of set pieces and heartfelt story. I did have a fear that this film wouldn't carry the same punch as the previous film and it was warranted. I did feel that the film suffered from a bit too much comedy at times and could've slowed down to focus on its character development. Amongst all of those concerns, there is still a lot of great fun to be had.

The real world cast all return and you get see how their lives were made better and somewhat not effected by their past shared adventure. Morgan Turner as Martha was great again and yet you see her character make a full 180 degree turn from her past cynical ways. Madison Iseman was fun as Bethany and I loved seeing her growth from a self absorbed teen to a more worldly person. Ser'Darius Blain stayed consistently as fun and hilarious as Anthony "Fridge" and I liked how he became the voice of reason in some scenes. Alex Wolff was great again as Spencer and I liked that he had not fully found his confidence like we thought he did previously. We get to see how life has brought him down and that added to his development the most. Colin Hanks returns as the forever helpful Alex and was as great as you'd expect. Danny Devito is always great and as Spencer's grandfather Eddie, he fit right into the world in many hilarious ways. Danny Glover was outstanding as Milo Walker and I loved the dynamic between the two of them. It's their strained friendship that serves as the back bone of the film's heartfelt story and it was great.

The game world cast return and they were challenged again with portraying their real world counterparts since this time they're switched. Karen Gillan was even more awesome this time around as Ruby Roundhouse/Martha. Not only did she get more action, but she got to do more comedically. Jack Black almost steals the film as Professor Oberon/Fridge. Instead of a girl he plays a black dude and I appreciated he didn't follow any stereotypes and he was hilarious. Dwayne Johnson had the biggest challenge in becoming Dr. Bravestone/Eddie. I thought his portrayal of Danny Devito's speech pattern was going to be annoying, but it worked for the most part. Kevin Hart was nailed it as Franklin/Milo and I loved how he captured Danny Glover’s essence. Nick Jonas was cool and just as fun as Seaplane/Alex. Awkwafina was awesome and hilarious in many scenes as Ming Fleetfoot/Spencer/Eddie. She had the most to do character wise and she nailed both personalities. Rhys Darby returns as the NPC game guide Nigel Billingsley and he was just as energetic and fun. Rory McCann was intimidating as the game's villain Jurgen the Brutal, but I do wish they gave him a little more to do. He was a cookie cutter villain but then again, most video game villains are.

The score by Henry Jackman was fun, big and bombastic as you'd want an adventure score to be. Like I said before, I wish there were more moments of depth with the characters and I wish the villain was more of a challenge. Overall, this wasn't as great as the previous film, but it still was alot fun and I would definitely recommend it for a family outing or if you loved the last film.

Jumanji: The Next Level Review

The success of the 2017 rebooted Jumanji meant it was never going to be just a one-off. Like The Rock's bulging triceps, these comes in pairs. But the title 'The Next Level' implies that we are ranking up from your previous adventure and triumphs. While the sequel doesn't quite reach what it is stipulating, it is still a funny and entertaining companion piece, with the returning and new additions to the reboot's cast, seemingly having as much fun as the audience.

Last time, the four teens who conquered the Jumanji video game have moved on from high school. The shy girlfriend Martha (Morgan Turner), footballer Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain) and the pretty and popular Bethany (Madison Iseman) are going their grown up thing and are very happy with life. But the bookish boy Spencer (Alex Wolff) is at a low. So much so, he decides to reboot up the infamous game that nearly killed him and his friends for some sort of fulfilment. Finding this out, the teenage adventurers follow him back into the game to rescue him. Inadvertently, they drag Spencer's grandpa Eddie and his estranged pal Milo (Danny Glover) for good measure.

The first film thrived on the body swap device and all the hilarious shenanigans that came from that. Devito and Glover now operate the avatars Dr Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) and Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart) respectively. They are the comical heart of the sequel and steal the show, with Johnson's doing his best brash, brooklyn accent and Hart's slow and gristle of Glover's delivery. The other switcharoo is Jack Black now doing the African-American jock thing. Karen Gillan returns and Awkwafina is drafted in as the cat burglar named Ming, whose owns DeVito impressions gives Johnson a run for his money.

Other than the people, the plot is near enough identical to its predecessor. Another smouldering bad guy in possession of a ancient McGuffin that our heroes need to save this video game world. But what matters is the laughs and arcady action set-pieces. It seems as though director Jake Kasdan and screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, have the motto of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Jumanji: The Next Level has enough all-round zaniness to make it an enjoyable second play-through.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

Since my initial viewing, Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle, has grown on me. I was looking forward to revisiting it to be adequately prepared for Jumanji: The Next Level but didn’t have the opportunity to. It’s probably a good thing that I didn’t. This sequel is fun. Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan are terrific playing teenagers (now college students) transported into a video game and given an arsenal of amazing (or sometimes dubiously useful) skills. The new characters introduced gives everyone a bit more to play with. In terms of plot, however, this is basically the same movie as the first.

Since their adventure inside Jumanji, Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), Martha (Morgan Turner), and Bethany (Madison Iseman) have become close friends with Spencer (Alex Wolff). When they discover he’s been sucked into the game once more, they jump in to rescue him. Unfortunately, the damaged game has shuffled their avatars around and accidentally brought in Spencer’s grandfather, Eddie (Danny DeVito) and his old friend Milo (Danny Glover) along too.

If you enjoyed the previous Jumanji, you’ll enjoy this one too. The jokes about the characters’ over-the-top skills and/or weaknesses, the avatars losing their lives in unexpected ways, the players interacting with the non-playable characters, the surprisingly deadly flora and fauna are all back. The picture makes great use of its video game setting with an impressive moving platform level crawling with mandrils, an exciting chase with a ravenous flock of ostriches, and legions of enemies for the overpowered Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Johnson) to pummel into dust. The villain is a non-character but that’s fine. It's about these people thrust into this world where, through these new skills they’ve received, they grow and mature. Since the gang is pretty well-adjusted, two septuagenarians are tossed in the mix. While Milo and Eddie's story may be predictable, they give the actors playing the avatars a lot to do. Last time, Jack Black stole the show. Now everyone gets to play someone who “doesn’t fit” their frame to great effect. Awkwafina as Ming Fleetfoot is particularly good and if the next film hinted at during the mid-credit scene comes to fruition, it’d be a mistake not to include her.

While generally, recapturing the charm of Welcome to the Jungle some of this feel contrived. Spencer returning to Jumanji is "ok", the "glitch pools" feel manufactured - though nonetheless effective. It's at its worst during the end when a big development not only comes out of nowhere but doesn’t feel like it belongs in an action-adventure jungle game at all. There had to be a better way to wrap things up.

Jumanji: The Next Level suffers from sequel-itus but its symptoms aren’t too bad. This adventure’s biggest flaw (along with underwhelming 3D) is the recycling of what worked before. It merely tweaks to the formula instead of innovating. It’s a good family movie with big laughs and excellent comedic performances as well. Jumanji: The Next Level

Jumanji: The Next Level is the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, both directed by Jake Kasdan. It’s been about a year since Spencer, Bethany, Martha and Fridge beat Jumanji and returned to the real world. Reuniting over Christmas break, the gang realizes that Spencer has not only rescued the game but gone back in, and Martha insists they go and rescue him. There’s a problem: not only can they not pick their characters, Bethany is left behind while Spencer’s grandfather Eddie and his ex-best friend Milo get sucked instead, and now Martha and Fridge have to not only save Spencer but make sure the pensioners don’t get themselves killed.

I never reviewed Jumanji, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it; I should probably note though, that I never liked the original Robin Williams film. When I saw it as a child it gave me nightmares, and as an adult I don’t like its uneven tone that neither a horror-drama nor a comedy. The remake did away with the horror, and it’s a much more straight forward comedy, even if it still kept some of the darker subtext with Alex’s character.

I am pleased to say that if you liked this first film, you will like this too. The sequel is as, if not more entertaining than the first film. The humor is funny and creative, the characters are excellent and the way the film plays around with the rules of the game and incorporates the new characters was brilliant.

Let’s start with that, the comedy. This film is very funny; it’s high energy, all the actors are talented and have good chemistry and the film takes advantage of the premise which is that the players can’t pick their characters because the game is broken. So while Martha is still Ruby, everyone else gets assigned a random character. I won’t spoil who is who, as that was part of the fun of the film, but we got some wild combinations like Akwafina doing an honestly supreme Danny De Vito performance, and several characters becoming a horse.

The film also plays up the comedy in the action set pieces. While they still are high octane and there were points where you do become worried for the characters, the comedy doesn’t just stop when the action starts. I could tell the people who made this film play video games and understand the inherent hilarity when a game glitches or you break it’s programming, like the NPC’s running out of dialogue options, terrible over acting, weird, jerky motions, and imo the funniest scene where Bravestone beats up an entire town of NPC’s because he doesn’t understand the concept of limited dialogue options and idle animations.

The story is perfectly fine; I had no issues with the explorations of anxiety, self-esteem, estrangement and growing old that the film explores. There were times where things got really cheesy; while I loved the dynamic between Eddie and Milo and the reasons why they stopped being friends, I found their last few conversations very melodramatic. I also found that Spencer’s anxiety was overdone; his paranoia that his friends are all doing better than him and he is being left behind didn’t really concur with what we were being shown which was constant messages in the group chat from everyone being eager to see him and catch up. Bethany even points out that she kept messaging him and he never responded and Martha had invited him over to her campus twice. It was a plot thread that needed more time and development, and was kind of dropped, especially since this movie isn’t really about Spencer; it’s about Milo and Eddie.

I did like the college age actors a lot more this time; they get a little bit more time to be present in the film, with the stand outs really being Ser’Darius Blain as Fridge and Alex Wolf as Spencer. The adult cast was as superb as the first film. I especially want to commend Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart because I really bought that they were two separate people in this film from the characters they were last time; especially Hart, he nailed Milo’s character and cadence. The only mild criticism I have is Bethany aka Jack Black. Bethany is great as a character, but Jack Black way overdoes her valley girl speak; it’s not that people aren’t or don’t talk like that, it’s that real life Bethany played by Madison Iseman doesn’t speak like that. It’s still a funny character though.

Overall this is just a plain fun film. It’s popcorn entertainment, through and through, and it’s messages about friendship and being grateful for the life you have are just icing on the cake that is fast-paced, thoroughly hilarious action. I highly recommend.
