jkr is a bad person who is bigoted and is currently using her wealth and influence to harm trans people, particularly in the uk. she is also a traumatised human being who was radicalised into a hate group and who wrote a globally popular series. both are true. I don’t like jkr, I don’t support her, so I avoid giving money to her. she is a non-entity in my mind, and if someone mentions HP to me in real life, I will make known to people she is using her wealth to target marginalised people. the harry potter books are good and bad, they have positives and negatives. her books largely reflect societal views and values at the time in britian. her bigotry is not unique. to get rid of bigotry, you need to change society, not throw away some books.

I am emotionally invested in a few hp characters and enjoy reading and writing mostly queer, mostly subversive, fanfiction of them. so fucking what?

I think it is much more healthy as a society to grapple with the fact that popular series which legitimately shaped millions of people’s lives is flawed, like any other media. That it is bigoted, that it is flawed, and what it looks like, instead of throwing it away and not grappling with what bigoted messages people may have imbued. Many still ‘acceptable’ and ‘revered’ popular YA fiction from the same era have the same problematic tropes, and it’s important to be aware of them: such as PJO and Mortal Instruments.

Let me repeat: yelling at HP fans is not activism. It is bullying. You are (understandably) hurt about JKR’s betrayal. But it is not the fault of a random HP fan. Particularly those engaging in transformative fandom.

I don’t even know if ‘fan’ is the right word for me - I like deconstructing HP. For me, death to the author means what it actually means - my interpretation surpasses the author’s. That’s it! That’s what it means.
