Lance Week '22 Super-Delayed Cross-Post no.4 - 'New Job'! So anyone who follows me will know this has been my beloved headcannon for over a year now - Air-Sea/Mountain Rescue Lance! It makes so much sense - his costume designs and colours from Gen 3 on, Dragonite's pokedex entries about benevolently saving drowning sailors in the wild, never mind with a trainer, his proclivity for heroics and proximity to the super-dangerous Mount Silver... I could go on xD
Anyhoot, please enjoy some slices across time, featuring a man in a variety of eye-searing, plastic-y trousers!

song analysis of michael caine by madness in relation to siffrin!!
[plain text of title: song analysis of michael caine by madness in relation to siffrin!!]
having recently gotten into ISAT and spent considerable time with my qpp discussing songs that fit siffrin, I've come to the conclusion that it is SUCH a sif song. PLEASE hear me out on this (ive no idea if theres an overlap between isat fans and random british ska band fans but if there is then hi!)
putting this under a read more both because its gonna be long and contain spoilers for pretty much the whole deal with ISAT. also apologies if I fail to pick up my autocorrect making me type 'saffron'
okay so. chronologically through the song theres just a Lot that makes me think of him. this may entirely be a reach but im too big a fan of this song to mind :]
'he's walking where I'm afraid I don't know/I see the firemen jumping from the windows/there's panic and I hear somebody scream'-- immediately the sense of disorientation and confusion that goes throughout both the song and siffrin. also the lack of subjects in the last line (who's panicking/screaming?) further gives this sort of like. unanswered questions that I think really fits sif and their whole. deal
'he picks up useless paper and puts it in my pocket'-- this is sif in the sense of how throughout the loops they become far more disillusioned with how much anything really matters. it all starts to pale in comparison to escaping the loop, and this especially resonates with the complete tunnel vision in the final loop. ALSO the inconsistencies in the entire song between first and third person remind me of the recurring ideas of like. identity and losing touch with yourself throughout the game. idk. im not sure if that's the case with the actual meaning of the song but yknow
'he can't remember tell me what's his name'-- themes of identity and memory and losing yourself. yeah.
AND THE CHORUS ITSELF IDK. 'and all I wanted was a word or photograph to keep at home'-- obviously the photograph thing but that's very literal, plus the idea of 'home' both in the song and in ISAT. also the 'all I wanted' alluding to regretting whatever caused the loop? which obviously creates the sense of his wish only being to have some stability and not. Yknow. a massive time loop. but hey ho
'the sun is laughing, it's another broken morning'-- loop. sun/star comparisons to be drawn, and the connotations of 'broken morning' in the context of being forced back to the same morning (or should I say, afternoon? [: ) repeatedly. also the connotations of 'another' as something trapping you/repeating ad infinitum AGH its so siffrin
'I see a shadow and call out to try and warn him, he didn't seem to hear just turned away'-- this reminds me of the whole like. futility of sif not being able to meaningfully help the others and just,,,,, agh,,,
'he had to sacrifice his pride, yes, throw it all away'-- further themes of a loss of an integral part of identity. I see this through the lens of siffrin's attempts to leave the loop becoming more and more desperate to the point of willing to compromise anything (of himself) for escape. fun!!
'his days are numbered, he walks round and round in circles'-- Oh You Know. repetition and never finding escape. siffrin..... aside from the whole time loop deal this line is fun to me in this interpretation of 'his days are numbered' but as the different iterations of the loop growing in frequency as opposed to the traditional use of 'days being numbered'. idk I just love flipping idioms
'there is no place he can ever call his own'-- again the themes of identity and home (or lack thereof). sif having nowhere to return to is suchhh an inciting theme of the whole game and this just completely summarises that. I also especially note the 'very' and how it finalises the whole thing; his country is gone, his memories are gone, and unless Something stops it, his family will be gone as well. I need to lie down.
'staring out the window there's nothing he can do now/all he wanted was to remain sane/he can't remember his own name'-- final verse before the last choruses and dear lord. siffrin. again with just the whole,,, memory and desperation and resignation. one very very reaching bit of analysis here is the shift in pronouns/person between the 'I can't remember tell me what's his name' and 'he can't remember his own name'; the forgetting of the name switches from an external thing that almost doesn't hold much weight to something symbolising a complete loss in self. if I'm then applying this to sif's character arc, I think this really just shows how their relationship with memory becomes more fraught and more of a source of stress throughout the game.
SO!!! I absolutely adore both in stars and time and this song, and just think it fits him so well. do you see my vision

ok so I watched Pistol like a month ago and I've been obsessed about the Sex Pistols ever since and I even read a couple of books on the band and I honestly feel so sad about them. Like It's weird how social media just made up a discourse about them and they don't even care how there were so young and exploited. I'm not justifying what John became and all the stuff Sid did, but Malcolm really exploited boys that already had issues and used them.
i understand how you feel anon. i feel the same way
the older i get, the younger the Sex Pistols seem. Steve, the oldest member of the band, was 23 when they broke up in 1978. the Pistols started gigging around in 1975. they were kids and they spent some of the most formative years of their lives (age 19-24 are the years of transition from teenagehood to adulthood and therefore very crucial in a person's development) being seen as public enemy number one by a majority of the ppl in britain, the insane tabloid press that slandered them non-stop, and the government of england that straight up considered trying them for treason. btw in the 70s you could be given the death penalty if you were found guilty of treason in england
Johnny and Paul were both nearly murdered in 1977. Paul wasnt even old enough to drink in america when random ppl twice his age decided that he deserved to die for having an opinion on the monarchy that wasnt positive. they beat him with an iron rod and left him in the street. Johnny has permanent nerve damage due to being stabbed through the hand and all of his friends at the time report him becoming so traumatized by this incident that he would run in terror if he thought someone was following him or looking at him weirdly
ppl will tell you that the Sex Pistols were violent, malicious ppl. theyre dead fucking wrong. the Sex Pistols were normal kids who just wanted to play music for other kids like them. they (aside from Sid) were never violent unless they were defending themselves or friends. 99% of the violence that surrounded the band was directed AT them
Johnny, Steve, and Sid had incredibly difficult childhoods and have very obvious mental health issues (Steve is pretty open about his struggles with mental health. the other two arent bc one of them committed suicide and the other would likely rather die then go to a psychiatrist). they were thrown from the fires of child abuse, homelessness, drug abuse, and poverty into the hell that is being the media's favorite punching bags and the designated 'acceptable targets' of an entire nation
to me the Sex Pistols were the most punk out of all of the first generation British bands. bc whats more punk then a band started by an abuse survivor who stole all of his musical equipment and taught himself how to play? whats more punk then having the government of your country against you and refusing to back down? whats more punk then fighting tooth and nail for your right to say what you want even when they try to censor you time and time again? whats more punk then refusing to change who you are and what type of songs you play even when ppl want you dead for it? whats more punk then throwing a christmas party with toys and cake for the kids of striking firemen?
Tumblr media
the image of the Sex Pistols as cartoon villains for some other more virtuous band to 'defeat' is not only completely false but its also pathetic. they were normal kids who didnt want to be famous or to be seen as the figureheads of a revolution. they wanted to play music, have fun, and shake things up so that the world would be more interesting for bored kids like them

Has Ireland ever had a moment or situation involving North where he's like "oh no my baby is in trouble" instead of "oh no my younger brother is in trouble?"
Yes, several times. Ireland was ready to raise North as his own when he found him, but circumstances led him to the decision that it was better to raise him as his little brother instead. He actually made his brothers swore to never mention this to North no matter what, much to their disagreement (especially Scotland, who vehemently believed he was making a mistake and still hold it against Ireland to this day).
Even if Ireland claimed it would make things easier for everyone and being like ‘trust me, I know what I’m doing guys’, there were moments where he couldn’t stop himself from going all ‘dad mode activated’ on North.
Here are a few examples:
He would call Scotland whenever he had a bad feeling concerning North. Call it father intuition, but Ireland could tell whenever North was distressed, even if they don’t live together or tensions were dangerously high. Scotland, tired of being in the middle of a live-action soap opera, started to refer to him as the “estranged divorced dad”, much to Ireland’s annoyance.
When Ireland heard about the malevolent magical creature that tried to snatch baby North in England’s home, he all but brought an armada worth of wards and protection sigils. The brothers’ houses are already warded but Ireland took it to another level and turned England’s house into the equivalent of the high security Alcatraz prison. It took hours of convincing from Wales to tone it down a little bit to let the friendly faeries in (such as Flying Mint Bunny & co.)
It’s one of the main reasons Ireland gave North his necklace when he officially left the Commonwealth in 1949, an action that shocked the others since he never took it off since he was a child.
In modern times, with the arrival of cellphones, they prefer to text than call, or more precisely Ireland would call, but North would hang up but text him back a second later. So you could imagine the first time North intentionally called him. Ireland was ready to drive all the way up to Belfast when he got a call from North in the middle of a panic attack at dead a night.
During WW2, the UK bros thought it would be best to send North with an officer/babysitter to Belfast to keep him safe and away from the war. Ireland was against the idea (same with the other brothers) and suggested taking him in since he was staying neutral (and didn’t want some random person to watch over North) but the British government didn’t budge on their decision, mostly because they didn’t want to risk Ireland ‘brainwashing’ one of their nations.
When the Belfast Blitz happened, Ireland was part of the group of firemen that were sent at the request of assistance from the North. And although he did help in organizing and helping to dispatch the firemen, his main objective was to find North. Luckily, North lived in the outskirts of the city but being a Nation, and a young one at that, the Blitz affected him heavily. Ireland was horrified to find that not only North was on the brink of death, but the officer that was supposed to watch over him was indifferent on his well-being, claiming that ‘nations always bounce back, he’ll be fine.’
Ireland decided right there and then to take North to Dublin, to hell the political backlash that would inevitably happen. He just looked at the officer dead in the eyes and said: “He may be a nation, but above all else, he’s a child. Do not forget he’s a six years old child.”
So after several days of shouting, of accusation of kidnapping, of threat of invasion, and many more, the British government reluctantly accepted letting Ireland take care of North for the remainder of the war under the condition the officer would be present at all time. It was a compromise nobody was happy about but it was better than nothing.
It was in that time that North and Ireland grew closer and where Ireland had the most trouble keeping the ‘treat him like your little brother’ line in check. Even with a hovering, apathetic douchebag over his shoulder, Ireland made sure to give North a few years of relatively safety amidst the horrors of war.
So in summary, Ireland was more direct in his involvement when North was a baby/child. But as years passed, especially after WW2, he put a distance between them, a part to protect himself from the pain to let go (again) and to not let North get too close. Unbeknownst to him, that action hurt North more than he realized and caused a festering resentment from North for the next decades.
Now, in modern times, their relationship is much better and they’re on friendly terms. Sometimes Ireland would slip into his more paternal side because he always sees him as Seán first than Northern Ireland, but would quickly step back in fear to make North uncomfortable. But even if North would look at him weirdly or roll his eyes whenever it happens, a part of him doesn’t mind it and brings him back to nostalgic memories from those handfuls of years they lived together.

I feel you so much. once a firefighter truck was parked in front of my building (nothing bad, my neighbor had locked himself out) and I got so excited like they were celebrities, like people who wait outside restaurants where there are famous people eating. And then I told myself “what the fuck, you idiot”. Truly, the most embarrassing moment of my entire life. I I’ve never been more ashamed of myself.
no for REAL, i was slightly ahead of a family and i genuinely stopped right in my tracks, and the mother made a huffy noise as she dragged her kids around me to keep going. i knew there was a fire station only a few minutes away from me but i'd never seen the truck or any of the actual firemen before and it was truly something.
tho @buckleysibs u are also right in that the british uniform didnt really do it for me. but handsome firefighter who steadied me if u r reading this then i can overlook that and we can still get married.

Movies I watched this week (#174):
2 old Hungarian films:
🍿 Ferenc Molnár's classic The boys of Paul street is a novel about two honorable gangs of school kids, who are fighting over an empty lot in the center of Budapest of 1902. When I was their age (so early 1960's) it was called "מחניים", and it was one of my favorite books (together with these of Erich Kästner's, Yigal Mossinson's, Enid Blyton's, Karl May's, Jules Verne's, etc).
So it was wonderful to discover that it was made into a well-made drama in 1968. The premise of a syrupy children story from that time, made about a naive world, unaware of any future European world wars, doesn't bode well. But it retained all its earnest truths, honors and morals. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film (together with 'The Firemen's Ball', Truffaut's 'Stolen Kisses' and Bondarchuk's winner 'War and Peace'). In a week that was cinematically disappointing, that was my bright spot. 8/10.
🍿 Unrelated to David Cronenberg, The fly won the 1980 Oscars for animated shorts. It tell a story from a pesky fly's point of view.
🍿
I am trying to watch at least 25% movies directed by women. Female Directors (2012) was made by 2 young female graduates of a Beijing film school, who couldn't afford to make a "Real" studio movie, so they make an indie "Home" movie of themselves. Strong early Godard vibes with shaky handheld camera and bad potato sound. Fresh and candid look as they search for themselves via sex, cinema, money. It feels like I've been in all these alleys.... [*Female Director*].
🍿
Short Vacation (2020), a gentle, tiny Korean version of 'Stand by me', but without any histrionics or a dead guy. 4 unremarkable middle school girls, members of the photography club, receive analog cameras from their teacher, who suggest they use the summer break to take of 'the end of the world'. They decide to take the train all the way to the last station, and end up in the "middle of nowhere". 7/10.
🍿
2 with actress Sakura Ando, both from 2023:
🍿 "It's like a prehistoric dinosaur turned monster..."
My second Godzilla (after the 1954 original), Godzilla minus one, the latest in the franchise. The monster stuff was ridiculous, as usual I guess, but the human drama part recreating post-war Tokyo, and especially the cutest 2 year old baby girl got bonus points from me. 5/10.
🍿 In Monster, my 6th film by Hirokazu Kore, she stars as a single mother to a 11 year old son who starts exhibiting strange behavior. For most of the story, it feels like 'The kindergarten teacher' and 'Hunt', and 'The teachers' Lounge', where the accusations of abuse might not be true, but it ends as a beautiful heartbreak, softly told. With a tender score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, his last before his death. 8/10.
🍿
The Sensualist (1991), an erotic Japanese animation, in a traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock style, like the original story of which it is based. Combination Patrick Nagel, Hiroshige and very-adult Disney stories. Ends with a long, artistic 'Coitus'. M'eh.
🍿
Patisserie Coin de rue (2011) is Food porn for imbeciles who love Japanese cake shops. I have a serious sweet tooth myself, but this story was just too dumb. Gorgeous cinematography of beautiful patisseries, and religious reverie for desserts. I could barely last for 42 minutes.
🍿
The Contestant is a new British documentary about aspiring comedian "Nasubi", who participated in a grotesque Japanese Television show in 1998. For 13 months he was placed naked in an empty room and was told that in order to get out, he will need to win 1 million yen in write-in sweepstakes. He didn't know that his every move was being broadcasted and that he'd became a massive hit. A bizarre, real-life 'Truman Show', and possibly the very first 'Reality TV' show ever. It was stupid, and cruel 'Mass Entertainment'. Fortunately, there's a tiny point of redemption at the very end. 2/10. [*Female Director*].
🍿
Cœur fidèle (Faithful Heart) (1923), my first 'poetic realist' melodrama by French Impressionist Jean Epstein. A technical classic with modern editing, dynamic story telling and lots of expressive close ups. He was 26 when he made it on location in the port of Marseille.
🍿
Sleeping beauty is a disturbing erotic art film by an Australian auteur, with a small cameo for Sarah Snook. A pretty student freelancing as a hooker on a 'Story of O' type journey into the deep end of 'Sleep' fetishism. If it was made by a man, I would hate it uncategorically. As it was, I found it prurient and shallow, flat and cold. 2/10. [*Female Director*].
🍿
I saw Gifted before, and the ratings I gave it weren't too high. But I'm a sap for tearjerkers about special little girls and their single dad/uncle, so I gave it another go. The Hallmark-style custody battle was mediocre, but all the girl stuff left me in tears nonstop. Add some Cat Stevens to the score, and you get quality Soap. 7/10. (Photo Above). Re-Watch ♻️.
🍿
The rope (1984), my first Sudanese movie. 2 blind nomads stumbles in an empty desert, tied together to a donkey. A cruel, wordless metaphor. Unbearable misery. 1/10.
🍿
Bogart & Bacall X 2:
🍿 Fast film is a 2003 Austrian mash-up art film, composed of 65,000 paper cutouts of Bogart and Cary Grant, and moving through 400 other classic movies. But this type of collage was done better and smoother in the Hungarian 'Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen' and Michel Hazanavicius' 'La Classe américaine'.
🍿 Dark passage, my first Film Noir by Delmer Daves. 5'10'' Bogart plays an innocent convict, who escapes from San Quentin, trying to prove his innocence. But wherever he goes, people around him keep falling dead. It was the third of four films real-life couple Bacall and Bogart made together. 1947 San Francisco and surroundings was lovely with so few people and cars on the roads.
🍿
I haven't seen Bob Fosse's acclaimed All that jazz since its premiere 45 years ago, so I was so looking forward for a re-watch. But after 3 days of attempting to go through it, I could muster only 33 minutes, before realizing how much I hated it, and had to stop. The genius Alpha male who kills himself in self-loathing, while abusing everything and everybody around him, is no longer appealing to me. The entitlement, misogyny, idealization of a legendary narcissist "Icon" was unbearable. ♻️.
🍿
3 shorts by British illustrator Elizabeth Hobbs:
🍿 "When I was a debutante, I went to the zoo every day..."
The Debutante (2022) is based on a story by Leonora Carrington. A debutante persuades a hyena from the London Zoo to take her place at a dinner dance held in her honour. [*Female Director*].
🍿 I'm OK (2018) is even better. It is based on the life of Expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka during WW1. Same frantic, hand-drawn splotchy style. 8/10. [*Female Director*].
🍿The Old, Old, Very Old Man (2007) is still earlier. Created with blue ink on a bathroom tile. The style here is dirtier, more primitive. [*Female Director*].
🍿
Amino ('Shadows'), a dreary award-winning Filipino film from 2000. A poor, hungry man with absolutely nothing to his name but a camera, gets his camera stolen in Manila's most miserable slum.
🍿
"I'm not lying. I saw her! Fuck you!..."
I haven't seen A simple Favor since January 19, but every time I recommend it to somebody, I feel compelled to check it out again. So about every 6 weeks now?! Jesus Christ, it's absurd!
Anyway, Anna Kendrick has the whitest teeth, and the worst taste in ugly shoes, on and off screen. My 10 Minutes Pinch Point Analyses still stands. 10/10. Re-Watch ♻️.
🍿
Surprisingly, I haven't seen any of Stormy Daniels porn work, but I had followed her story "with interest". The new documentary Stormy offers little new information to political junkies, but it details the harrowing path this brave woman had to endure, and the incredible price she had to pay. Unfortunately, it shows many clips of Orange Sphincter talking, something I try to avoid as much as possible. May he lose bigly in his current criminal case in NY, and also may he catch incurable rectal cancer today, and live the rest of his days in painful agony. [*Female Director*].
🍿

"FIRE IN PENITENTIARY," Weekly British Whig. October 23, 1913. Page 3. --- DID $15,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE SATURDAY EVENING. ---- Blaze Started in the Drying Room of the Laundry, and Spread to the Prisoners' Changing Room City Fire Brigade Called. ---- On Saturday evening, about seven o'clock, a fire broke out in the drying-room of the Portsmouth penitentiary, and did damage to the extent of about $15,000. It is thought that the fire started in the north-west corner of the room. It spread up the elevator shait to the changing-room, which is situated on the second floor. After completely gutting that floor, the blaze made its way to the ceiling and roof above, and ruined them.
The changing-room is the place where the convicts go once a week to get clean clothing and to leave the soiled garments so as to have them sent to the laundry. At the time of the fire there was a considerable quantity of clothing, blankets and boots stored away, and all these things were completely destroyed.
At 7.08 o'clock the city fire department received a telephone message from the hospital at the prison, asking the chief to send his men and apparatus to the fire. It was only a minute before Chief Armstrong and seven men were on their way to the prison with a hook and ladder truck, a hose cart and a steamer. Upon arrival at the institution the guards were waiting at the gates so as to help the brigade into the yard.
By this time the guards and keepers had organized themselves into a fire brigade and were fighting the blaze with six streams of water. The local fire fighters attached the seventh line of hose and did excellent work.
Every ladder on the truck was used and by this means excellent work was accomplished. The big prison is equipped with 2,000 feet of hose, but there are not nearly enough ladders to fight a big blaze.
The fire fighters were greatly handicapped on account of being unable to get the hose through the bars on the windows. The distance between the bars is about one-half inch too narrow to allow the coupling to pass through.
All the guards at the prison are deserving of great credit for the work they did. On one occasion the men organized themselves into a small brigade and carried a line of hose to the top of the east end of the burning building. On several occasions they stood their ground when nearly drowned by water and suffocated by the dense smoke.
It was indeed a grand sight when the cupola of the building burned away and fell into the yard. The local fire brigade had the hose in the windows on the west and south sides of the building, while all ladders were leading to the roof. At one time it was feared that the fire had spread into the attic of the tailor shop. Chief Armstrong crawled up on the building and chopped a hole through the roof and Fireman Cockade crawled into the hole, but found that it was only smoke from the other fire which was emerging.
Five of the local fire fighters returned to the station on Sunday morning at two o'clock, while Firemen Murray and Cockcade stayed until 8.30 o'clock Sunday morning. When the brigade received the call Chief Armstrong brought the apparatus up from the lower station and left it at No. 2 station, in charge of Assistant Chief Elmer.
None of the convicts were in the slightest danger, as the place where the fire occurred in a long distance from the cells.

Books Read in 2023 #72 - “Valiant Annual 1966” by various
Tumblr media
The start of the holiday season means it’s time to pull one of the vintage British comics annuals off the shelf and give it a read.
I was a pretty regular Valiant reader around the time this was published so many of the strips were familiar, such as cover star Captain Hurricane, schoolboy gag strip Billy Bunter, and typical British low key superheroics from The Steel Claw and Kelly’s Eye. The historical adventure strips weren’t that familiar but still a fun read.
The few prose adventure stories didn’t hold up as well with their xenophobic “Johnny foreigner up to no good” plots.
As always with these classic annuals I find the contemporary articles on sports and science a nostalgic read. Although the one on how the London Fire Brigade operates was a blatant recruitment piece complete with an address to write to for more information on its Junior Firemen scheme. I wonder if they are still taking applications?

GREAT BALL OF FIRE!
Lucille Ball and the Fire Department
Tumblr media
Where there’s smoke - there’s Lucy!  Lucy’s encounters with the fire department are legendary - even becoming a volunteer firefighter on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“I Love Lucy” wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who helped bring the studio up to code for filming when live audiences were introduced to the mix. Previously, audiences were not permitted on film sets due to fire codes. Ironically, the show’s sponsor was a cigarette company, at a time when smoking indoors was commonplace.
Tumblr media
In “Be A Pal” (1951), Lucy sets fire to Ricky’s newspaper to get his attention! Considering all the trouble and cost Desi had to assure the studio audience’s safety for the Los Angels Fire Department, it is amazing this gag was allowed!
Tumblr media
“Fred and Ethel Fight” (1952) ~ When Fred and Ethel patch things up, Lucy and Ricky start feuding, leading to Lucy to pretend to be hit by a bus and Ricky to stage a fire in the apartment to test each other’s affection. Ricky and Fred use a toy siren and a beekeepers smoker to convince Lucy the building’s ablaze.
Tumblr media
Moments from the episode, including the aftermath of the ‘fire’ were recreated for the 2021 film Being the Ricardos.
Tumblr media
In “The Marriage License” (1953), one of the many hats worn by Mr. Willoughby (Irving Bacon) is fireman, presumably of the Connecticut town of Greenwich where the scene is set. Mr. Willoughby mistakes Lucy’s red hair for the flames of a fire. His helmet says “Engine 1″.
Tumblr media
In "Too Many Crooks" (1953), suspecting Lucy to be Madam X, Fred and Ethel spy on her from the fire escape. Fire escapes were common features of New York City apartment buildings, a series of metal ladders allowing residents to get out of the building in case of a fire. They were most famously represented in the musical West Side Story.
Tumblr media
A running plot point of the first season of “The Lucy Show” (1963) has Lucy and Viv recruiting their friends to serve as the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department. Naturally, Lucy serves as Captain.
Tumblr media
Six weeks earlier, in “Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna” (1962), two firemen help Lucy and Viv off the roof when their DIY installation of a TV aerial goes wrong. Chuck Roberson and Hubie Kerns play the firemen.
Tumblr media
Lucy is dismayed that nearby towns have a fire department, while Danfield has none. In “Lucy and Viv are Volunteer Fireman” (1963), the first episode to begin the plotline, Lucy writes to her congressman about the situation.
Dear Senator Dodds;
I feel it is my duty to point out an alarming situation which exists here in Danfield. Because of re-zoning in the county our fire department has been transferred to Ridgebury many, many miles away. As a result, in case of a fire, defenseless women and little children will be left helpless to face a flaming inferno. Until this outrageous condition is rectified, the least you can do for Danfield is to create a volunteer fire department.
Yours very truly,
Lucille Carmichael
PS: I plan to vote for you in the next election. That is, if the polling place hasn’t burned down.
Tumblr media
In response to their letter, they are visited by Captain Metcalf (Patrick McVey) of the Ridgebury Fired Department.
Tumblr media
Jerry and Sherman are appointed Junior Firemen. This is a real-life program for youth run by most American and British fire departments to encourage home safety in fire prevention. Talking about the potential for a fire, Lucy says she doesn’t want to be known as one of the “Last of the Red Hot Mamas.”
Tumblr media
The episode uses a fire pole and a Moreland fire truck. Both are employed for comic effect.
Tumblr media
Lucy and Viv rehearse putting on their fire fighter uniforms, calmly timing themselves as they do. When a real fire alarm sounds, the moment is comically chaotic.
Tumblr media
When Metcalf is training the women at the old firehouse, there is a Smokey Bear Forest Fire Prevention poster behind him. This particular design was first issued in 1953.
Tumblr media
Captain Metcalf claims that the reason the Danfield volunteer fire brigade will consist of all females is because so many men commute to New York, further reinforcing that fictional Danfield is a bedroom community of Manhattan.
Tumblr media
In connection with this episode, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance were made honorary fire chiefs of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They were photographed wearing official white helmets with Henri O'Bryant, vice president of the Fire Commission, Fred Kline, commission president, and LA Fire Chief William L. Miller.
Tumblr media
Because the episode was shot out of order, the fire fighter plotline is not mentioned in the next two episodes, but resumes in “Lucy’s Barbershop Quartet” (1962). Since all the members of the group are members of the Danfield Volunteer Fire Brigade, the quartet is named The Four Alarms.
Tumblr media
Again, the storyline is put on the back burner for two episodes, until “Lucy Drives a Dump Truck” (1963). After promising the Volunteer Fire Department that the town council will pay for their new uniforms, the girls find that they will be stuck for the cost themselves. They want to relieve Lucy as captain, until she comes up with the idea of selling newspapers for salvage.
Tumblr media
In addition to Lucy and Viv, the members of the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department are: Thelma Green (Carole Cook), Audrey Simmons (Mary Jane Croft), Dorothy Boyer (Ruth Crews, later Dorothy Konrad), Babette Edwards (Karen Norris), Frances (Mary Wickes), Colleen (Renita Reachi), Pauline Lopus, Grace, as well as background performers Bess Flowers and Hazel Pierce.
Tumblr media
The next time we hear about the volunteer fire department, the show is being filmed (but not initially aired) in color!  “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (1963). The women recruite acting coach Professor Gitterman (Hans Conried) to help them stage the production.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Viv Play Softball” (1963) ~ Lucy and Viv are usually bench warmers when the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department plays softball, but a member’s preganancy lands them on the field.
Tumblr media
"Lucy Puts Out a Fire at the Bank” (1963) ~ When the town council refuses to fund the Danfield Volunteer Fire Department, Lucy takes her brigade for some training to impress Mr. Mooney, then sets a small fire at the bank to demonstrate their worth!  Mr. Mooney wants Danfield to be served by New Rochelle's Fire Department. In previous episodes they were served by Ridgebury.
Tumblr media
The Danfield Volunteer Fire Department has a service record of:
43 cat rescues; 12 of them of the same cat.
8 clogged up chimney flues unclogged.
16 piles of burning leaves were extinguished.
1 lawsuit against the city for water damage at the Armenian restaurant for an incident surrounding flaming shish-kabob on a sword.
Tumblr media
Their training is led by Captain Burke (Alan Hale Jr.).  This is the final episode of the fire brigade plotline, ending a year after it is introduced.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Coin Collector” (1964), Lucy and Viv stand on the street in front of a bright yellow fire hydrant. Along with the mailbox, the fire hydrant was a standard set dressing for scenes taking place on city streets.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Disc Jockey” (1965), the last episode set in Danfield, Lucy uses a fire extinguisher when the control board explodes. The radio station is covered in foam for the rest of the episode. The moment was included in the show’s opening montage.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Makes a Few Extra Dollars” (1971) ~ Lucy Carter breaks out a fire extinguisher when Harry sets a fire in the office waste basket.
Tumblr media
Larry J. Blake plays the fireman who comes to extinguish the trash can blaze.
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Punctured Romance” (1972) ~ Lucy burns the roast causing the fire department to smash the front door glass. Larry J. Blake returns as the Fire Cheif (wearing the same uniform), joined by Orwin C. Harvey and Sid Gould.

From Reichstag Fire to War Criminal Colin Powell's Anthrax Vial: Top 8 False Flags in History
Tumblr media
The alleged chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma on April 7 served as a pretext for US, French and British airstrikes against the Middle Eastern country on April 14. Sputnik France contributor Irina Dmitrieva decided to look back at a few other incidents which led to wars in the decades, centuries and millennia past.
The suspected Douma attack prompted the US and its allies to fire over 100 missiles into Syria, just hours before the arrival of a fact-finding mission by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Days earlier, Russian chemical warfare specialists visited the site of the alleged attack, finding no traces of chemical weapons use. Furthermore, the video evidence purporting to show the fallout from a chemical attack at a Douma hospital has come under intense scrutiny amid eyewitness testimony suggesting that no chemical attack had taken place.
Sputnik contributor Irina Dmitrieva outlined eight other egregious cases of false flag attacks used to serve some political or military goal.
Reichstag Fire
On the night of February 27, 1933, Reichstag Palace, the seat of the German parliament in Berlin, was ravaged by fire. Police arrived on the scene and arrested Marinus van der Lubbe, an unemployed Dutch communist. Germany's fledgling Nazi authorities used the fire for political purposes, presenting it as a criminal act by Germany's then-powerful communist opposition. The fire put an end to personal freedom in the Weimar Republic, and marked the beginning of the campaign to crush all opposition to the Nazis.

"There are several versions about what happened that night, from an act of an individual to a Nazi conspiracy," Dmitrieva wrote. "Subsequent investigations found that the building was already burning in several areas by the time the Dutch communist arrived. French historian Jacques Delarue believes that the act of arson was committed by a Nazi stormtrooper on the initiative of Hermann Goering."
Vial of Anthrax in the Lead-up to Iraq War
On February 5, 2003, US Secretary of State Colin Powell delivered a speech at the UN, waving a prop vial of anthrax, meant to represent Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's supposed efforts to hide his weapons of mass destruction. The UN Security Council refused to support US-led intervention. However, a month and a half later, the US and the UK started a military operation anyway.

The Iraq War cost the coalition thousands of military casualties, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were killed. The war also led to the near collapse of the state of Iraq, and the rise of Daesh (ISIS).* No substantial evidence of biological, chemical or nuclear weapons were never found.
A year after the war began, War Criminal Boak Bollocks Powell admitted (After Killing Millions of Innocents in an Illegal War) that he had been misinformed, and that the details in his UN presentation were "WRONG." WTF?
Mukden Incident
The Mukden Incident, also known as the Manchurian Incident, took place on the night of September 18, 1931, and marked the beginning of the Second World War in Asia. The incident saw soldiers of Japan's Kwantung Army laying a bomb near the railway track at the Japan-leased South Manchuria Railway near the city of Mukden, on the border with Japanese-controlled Korea. Tokyo blamed the incident on China, thus justifying its invasion of Manchuria. The invasion succeeded, and Japan's occupation lasted until August 1945. The International Military Tribunal for the Far East established in Tokyo after the war under the Potsdam agreements concluded that several senior Japanese officers were responsible for the plot.
Tumblr media

The incidents in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2nd and 4th, 1964 triggered the American war in Vietnam. According to the version long adhered to by the United States, North Vietnamese torpedo boats attacked the US Navy destroyer USS Maddox on August 2nd in international waters in the Gulf of Tonkin, prompting a skirmish.
Tumblr media

CC0/U.S. Navy - Official U.S. Navy photo USN 711524 from the U.S. Navy Naval History and Heritage Command / the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Maddox (DD-731)
Following the incident, President Lyndon Johnson ordered the destroyer USS Turner Joy to support the Maddox, and on the night of August 4, they made their way back to the Gulf of Tonkin, where they were again 'attacked' by unidentified enemies and returned fire. US aviation deployed to the area did not manage to find the 'enemy ships', but Washington was informed.
The incident prompted Congress to authorize President Johnson to start a military operation in Vietnam on August 7, 1964. By 1965, the US had sent over 200,000 troops to the country, with the number going up to over 500,000 by 1968. The Vietnam War lasted a decade, and led to the deaths of over 58,000 US servicemen, and up to 3.1 million Vietnamese, as well as 300,000 Cambodians and 62,000 Laotians.
In 2003, former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara admitted that the attack on the Maddox on August 4 and used to justify the war never took place. Two years later, documents declassified by the NSA confirmed that doubts about the Tonkin attack were raised from the very beginning of the investigation.
USS Maine Explosion
On February 15, 1898, an explosion took place on the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor, killing 260 men, or two thirds of the ship's crew. Washington immediately blamed Spain, which controlled Cuba at the time, for the attack, with US media presenting Spain's guilt as an established fact despite a lack of evidence.
Tumblr media

On April 19, Congress passed a resolution demanding that Spain leave Cuba. Days later, US forces opened fire on Spanish emplacements in Havana. By mid-August 1898, Madrid lost the war. Under the peace treaty, Spain was forced to transfer its colonies in Asia and Latin America, including the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico and Cuba, to the United States.
A 1976 investigation by US Admiral Hyman G. Rickover conducted an investigation, concluding that the sinking of the Maine may have been caused a spontaneous combustion in the ship's coal bins, an issue which afflicted other ships at the time.
Mainila Incident
The shelling of Mainila, the incident which led to the Soviet-Finnish Winter War, took place on November 26, 1939. The same day, the Soviet government sent a note of protest to the Finnish government, accusing Finnish forces of firing seven artillery shells into Soviet forces, which led four dead and nine injured. Moscow demanded that Finland withdraw its troops 20-25 km from the border. Helsinki demanded that Moscow do the same.
Tumblr media

Moscow refused, since this would mean withdrawing into Leningrad. Red Army commanders were ordered to initiate return fire to any attacks along the border. Four days later, Soviet forces began an invasion of Finland. For decades afterward, Soviet historians argued that Finland was to blame for the incident. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, new theories arose in Russia, including that the incident was staged by the NKVD, precursor to the KGB, or that the November 26 incident did not lead to any Soviet losses in the first place. In 1994, Russian President Boris Yeltsin denounced the Winter War as a war of aggression.
Gleiwitz Incident
The Gleiwitz incident was organized by the Nazis in Gleiwitz, eastern Germany (now Poland) on August 31, 1939.
Tumblr media

On the night of August 31, German soldiers dressed in Polish military uniforms seized a radio transmitter at Gleiwitz, calling on the Polish minority in Silesia to rise up and overthrow Adolf Hitler.
The false flag attack, dubbed Operation Himmler, was intended to legitimize the Nazi German invasion of Poland. Details of the false flag attack were revealed by the confession of SS functionary Alfred Naujocks at the Nuremberg Trials in 1945.
On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. On September 3 and 4, France and Britain joined the war, prompting the start of the Second World War in Europe.
Great Fire of Rome
False flags are by no means just a product of the last two centuries. On July 18, 64 BC, Rome, one of the largest cities of Antiquity, was struck by a fire which raged six days and seven nights, completely destroying three of the city's fourteen districts and damaging seven others, and leading to thousands of deaths.
Tumblr media

Emperor Nero took immediate steps to restore the city, but this did not silence rumors that he was responsible for the blaze. This prompted the emperor to blame Christians. Roman historian Tacitus emphasized that the persecution of Christians began immediately after the fire.
"Any resemblance between these historical provocations and current events is accidental," Dmitrieva wrote. However, "just as the Great Fire of Rome led to atrocities against civilian populations, any provocation today can lead to violence and even war. Let's hope that no country in the world will compel humanity to pay this price in the name of its national interests," the journalist concluded.
