Winterhawk Community Sourced Recommendations, A Master List
This post is a long time coming, but finally I’ve finished a master list from when this fandom really helped me out.
The original post is here:
^ Just in case I have forgotten or skipped over a recommendation, or if more are added in the comments since making this post.
My original plea for help was, for context on the type of recommendations you may find (though delightfully, there are others mixed in):
‘I'm looking for Winterhawk fic recommendations.
Ones where Clint finds/meets the WS (as either Hawkeye or an AU Clint, not picky)
Or ones where it is Winterhawk with a Hurt Bucky or Bucky in Distress kind of vibe.
AU or otherwise, even if it is a full on Clint/Bucky AU.’ I also had asked simply for favorite authors and favorite stories. The answers were plentiful and wide spreading, and I’m still making my through (I am a multishipper as long as one of ‘em is Bucky Barnes – welcome to my hyper fixation. So I jump around).
So, in thanks to so many who took time to dig for the recommendations, I wish to spread the love and make it easier to view what others took the time to dig up for me. It really did help. ❤️
I tried to make it easy and may have gone overboard, but hopefully ‘Ctrl-F’ or copy + pasting the text because I typed this out instead of using image snips (oh my gods the time this whole thing took) makes it easier to search tags.
Hopefully this helps others, and so now, organized for all our reading pleasure: A special thanks to sunny-rants for jumping in to give recommendations sooo fast!
*Please note: I have included tags, but not pairings, for times sake. All the stories are Winterhawk, and I believe there was a Clint/Bucky/Steve as well. *I also did not include archive warnings, etc. so please review the tags at your own risk.
*Also, cause I’m absolutely shameless, if you want to include anymore recs, that would be amazing… just putting that out there. Also, don't worry if you think it may be a repeat, I can always sort it out/organize later. (wink, wink: got any bottom Bucky, angst, long fics, AUs (current fav)? Clint taking care of Bucky etc.?)

'Keep Reading' for the recommendations bestowed upon me in an hour of need, along with summary, tags, and wordcount

Clint Barton's Super Secret Snipers' Club. (Invitation and pending mental health evaluation required.)
"When Steve brings Bucky back to the tower for the first time, Clint’s first thought is that Tony Stark’s pride and joy is quickly becoming a less of a very tall and expensive ‘fuck you’ in the faces of investors who don’t believe in self-sustaining energy, and more of a superhero rehabilitation center."

"Look, dude, I get it. You’re fucked-up. HYDRA fucked you up. I’ve been there. But you’re my fucking Soul Mate!"
“I can kill you. I could kill you without even realizing what I was doing. I’m not fucked-up, I’m a monster. I’m a nightmare. You can’t be here. You can’t- All the people I’ve killed- I will not murder my Soul Mate too. Not after everything else I’ve-”
Clint worked his left hand between their bodies and managed to land a punch to the man’s right side, forcing him to shift his weight, and Clint brought his right hand down on the place where the man’s metal arm met his torso - hidden by the shirt he wore, but on full display in the video Clint had watched.
The man released Clint with a grunt of pain, and Clint pressed his advantage, landing another punch to his abdomen, backing him up against the opposite side of the RV and then pressing the kitchen knife he had pocketed while cleaning up earlier to the man’s throat.
“Like I said, I’m not a Boy Scout. I’m plenty dangerous myself. We clear on that?”

Summary:
Clint has once again been wrangled into doing something because Natasha thinks it’ll be good for him; he’s not sure why she thinks she needs therapy too, but he knows better than to question her logic at this point.
Bucky’s doubtful that group therapy is going to do much for his crippling sense of self-loathing (and to be honest, he really doesn’t want the help), but Steve’s convinced it will be beneficial for both of them to learn to deal with the mistakes from their past.
None of them ever expected to have to deal with secret government organizations, eccentric billionaires, or unwanted super powers on top of their personal problems, but then, they are already paying Sam.

Summary:
“So,” he said, unwrapping the foil of the bar, “I’m Clint.”
The Soldier just blinked at him, caught somewhere between confused and surprised.
Which, fair, Clint got that a lot.
But he figured the Soldier hadn’t expected him to acquiesce so quickly, and Clint fully intended to capitalize on that, either in information or opportunity to escape or both.
He flashed a half-smile at the other man, one he’d flashed at a dozen other people in the last few years, one that got him a second look at least seventy percent of the time, and a quickie a fairly significant portion of that. He stretched his arms up over his head and cracked his spine, working the stiffness out of the shoulder that had, until ten seconds ago, been shackled to the furniture.
“This is the part where you tell me your name.” Clint said. “Or something to call you by,” he amended.
Or: Clint meets his soulmate.

Summary:
And now Steve had brought him home like a goddamn found puppy he wanted to keep.
“What the fuck, Rogers?” Clint asked, his hands itching for a bow, a gun, an anything, but not stupid enough to make any sudden moves. There was no way to casually reach for the pistol he’d tucked into the back of his jeans, not with Steve so close and the Winter Soldier so unkillable.
“He’s not the Winter Soldier,” Steve said in a rush of expelled air, reading the tension in Clint’s arms correctly. “He’s Bucky Barnes.”
Either there were two silver-armed motherfuckers running around - and Clint could believe anything at this point - or this situation was even more bizarre than he’d first thought. And he knew bizarre. He’d been part of a circus.

Summary:
Bucky is a disabled vet struggling with reintegrating into civilian life. He has a routine and a rhythm, and he doesn't like to let anything - big or small - disrupt it. That all changes the day Bucky finds himself inside CATastrophe, the local pet rescue, recovering from a panic attack in the back room of the shop. He’s used to walking by the place, not visiting, but the next thing Bucky knows, he’s hanging signs and being used as a climbing tree for a bunch of freshly-acquired kittens. And he just...keeps going back. First for the kittens, then for the disaster shop owner who rescues actual kittens from actual trees and teaches archery as a side-gig, and eventually because he’s hopelessly in love.

Look What The Cat Dragged In by flawedamythyst
https://archiveofourown.org/works/27084847/chapters/66134170
Summary:
The Winter Soldier was looming over him, dressed in full combat gear and hung all about with weapons. Blood was seeping out of a wound on his arm and there was a smear of it down his cheek that was starting to flake off as it dried. He was staring at Clint with a jaw-clenchingly intense glare and Clint felt every cell in his body freeze up under his scrutiny, expecting pain of some kind.
Instead, the Winter Soldier held a fist out containing Clint’s hearing aids and then, once he’d tucked them in pretty much on autopilot, thrust a cat in Clint’s face and growled out, “Tell me about this kitten,” like he was demanding the passwords to a nuclear weapon.
Somehow Clint ends up co-owning a kitten with the Winter Soldier.

Summary: Clint is only a couple of sips into his cardboard cup of coffee, his brain barely out of neutral, which is probably why it takes him so long to realize that some damn psycho is trying to kidnap his dog.
Excerpt:
“I’m not some charity case,” Bucky says pugnaciously.
“I didn’t think you were,” Clint answers back readily enough. “I mean, I can tell you’re fucked up for sure, but of the two of us, I’m probably the bigger disaster. My sleep schedule is shit, and I drink coffee straight from the pot. I sing in the shower even though I’m deaf as fuck. I have arrows everywhere because I’m an archer — did I tell you that? And I was raised in a literal circus, so I’m not exactly domestic. Let’s see, what else?” He squints down at the ground, rubbing the back of his neck. “Oh, yeah, I won the building in a poker game with the Russian mafia and every once in awhile they show up and try to take it back, but usually I handle it, no problem. Uh...”
Clint happens to looks up and Bucky’s eyes are wide, his mouth hanging open. Clint’s hand freezes where he’s rubbing the back of his neck, suddenly embarrassed. Yeah, when you put it all out there at once, it doesn’t sound so good.

“I’m Clint,” he says again, knowing that he’s going to have to force this if he’s not going to go insane in here. He lasted this long, but knowing that there’s someone else? Someone else who he could talk with? No, he needs that right now. So badly. Someone who isn’t Tasha coming in to update him on the real world. Someone else who’ll help him make fun of the guards and maybe who’ll harmonize with him to Bohemian Rhapsody. He’s not looking for a new best friend, just someone who’ll commiserate. “I’m gonna call you John.”
There’s some movement. Sounds like someone’s head bumping the wall. “Why John?”
“Since you aren’t giving me your name to work with, you’re a John Doe to me, right? So I’ll just… call you John.”

Summary:
Cap relaxes his hold, but he stays where he is, still looming over him. “Clint. The compound’s been breached,” Rogers whispers urgently, then finally sits back and lets go of him.
There’s another explosion, closer this time and throwing more light. He turns his head sharply and sees Bucky Barnes hovering near the door, looking… off. Clint pushes Rogers and he finally stands up so Clint can scramble out of the bed and grab some clothes. He’s wearing only boxers because it’s fucking hot in Wakanda, and he catches Barnes’ eyes flicking across his body.
Clint long ago stopped being bothered by people’s reactions to the many scars on his body – not that that many people actually see them - but that doesn’t mean he appreciates when they stare. “Like what you see?” he asks with a hard edge as he pulls on his shirt. Barnes turns his head, at least having the decency to look embarrassed for being caught staring.
Rogers looks at them both impatiently and quickly switches gears. “Clint, I need you to take Bucky. Get him out of Wakanda and somewhere safe.”
OR Bucky and Clint fall into each other. Bad shit happens. Then it all works out in the end.

Next job I’m taking is going to be south of the equator, Clint promised himself as he finished zipping up his down coat. He wished he had another. He was already wearing a black balaclava and a black beanie, thermal underwear under his clothes and two pairs of pants, but it was freezing on the rooftop.
The wind and the fine, misty rain that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be snow, ice or rain definitely didn’t help matters.
Clint hated the cold.
He didn’t understand why millionaire criminal masterminds couldn’t meet in exotic, warm locations to do their deals.

Summary:
The Asset pauses. He remembers the first few days after dragging St- dragging Captain America out of the water, the aimless emptiness that had filled him, with no mission and no knowledge of what to do next. He’d spent a week staring at the peeling wallpaper in a motel. There had been butterflies patterned on it. He hadn’t known what direction to go in next, because he was (is) scared of Captain America, and he didn’t want anything to do with Hydra, and he’d just… stopped. That’s when he realizes Barton isn’t going to move unless he gives the man a reason to move, something to do that isn’t related to a past he can’t remember or the threat of imminent death. (It’s been burned out of him, the Asset can relate.)
A mission.
He's leaning on the button to the microphone before he thinks about it. “Come with me and you can kill more of them.”

Clint is confused about why Natasha keeps following him around – he keeps seeing glimpses of black out of the corner of his eye. The constant presence means he’s a little suspicious of his next mission. Unfortunately, it’s still not enough to keep him from being caught.

...being courted by a wolf!shifter is hard.
When Clint accepts the Game Warden/Shifter Pack Liaison position in Willow’s Run he thinks he'll be signing hunting licenses and maybe writing a few tickets. He doesn't expect to start a brawl on day one, be claimed by the definitely scary Beta!Wolf Bucky on day two and begin what might be the worlds slowest courtship.
...oops?
Eventually Clint settles into his new role, strikes up a friendship with precocious scientist!Tony and a careful affair with Bucky. He navigates awkward shifter courtship rituals and misunderstandings, surprising romance and increasingly bitey kisses and for a while, all is well in the mountains.
But hunting season brings strangers to the town and when increased tension and broken rules bring up old prejudices and new fears, their quiet life turns dangerous.
Clint has his hands full with aggressive hunters, defensive pack members and a town pushed towards chaos.
Torn between the law and what his heart wants, the Game Warden knows something's gotta give--

Summary: Fate has it out for Clint Barton.
After a few too many heartbreaks, he's given up looking for his Soulmate; who needs happily ever after anyway? He’s perfectly content with his dog, his job, guarding eccentric billionaires, and drinking Natasha’s contraband vodka. Just ask anyone.
So he doesn’t think anything about inviting a random sex worker home for coffee to get him out of the cold - no need for any special company, thanks - because that’s just the decent thing to do. But when he keeps meeting Bucky again and again, it’s not fate he’s gotta worry about, it’s his heart.
Bucky’s just living his life. He’s got work he doesn’t hate, a degree program he loves, and and a side project out to prove Green Arrow's archery antics aren't possible outside the comics. He’ll meet his Soulmate when the time is right, but for now he’s content to wait.
But then his roommate pulls a Breaking Bad, leaving him caught up in an NYPD investigation, out of his regular work, and scrambling for a place to stay where his demon-cat won’t get them both evicted. Before he knows it, Clint is turning his whole life turned upside down, and Bucky thinks fate shouldn’t be tempting him.

Summary: Following the events of CA:TWS, the Winter Soldier finds Hawkeye. Clint is still haunted by his own experiences with having his control stripped away, but together they find a way to heal.
Excerpt:
“How did you even … how are you tracking me?” Clint tries.
The question seems to confuse Barnes even further. He looks at Clint, and then somewhere behind Clint’s shoulder, and then back to Clint’s eyes.
“I don’t know,” Barnes says again.
“Listen,” Clint says, taking a step forward, and Barnes flinches back instinctively, stumbling for a moment.
“Whoa,” Clint says. Before he knows it he’s sheathing the knife and grabbing Barnes’ arm, steadying him. Barnes blinks rapidly a few times, wobbling a bit before he seems to find his balance again. His slate-blue gaze, so intent a moment ago, seems a little unfocused.
“When’s the last time you ate? Drank something? Slept?”
“I don’t know,” Barnes says, Clint mouthing the lines along with him.
Christ, Nat is going to kill him when she finds out about this, but there’s nothing else Clint can do.

Summary: Four years after the Battle of New York, Clint has created a stable life for himself and his young daughter, free of the dangers of SHIELD work.
The Winter Soldier turned himself in to the Avengers, expecting a death sentence or lifetime of imprisonment. Instead, he found absolution and an invitation to join the team. He is still adjusting to life as an Avenger when he meets Clint Barton and his daughter.
The young man that Bucky Barnes used to be was wholeheartedly enthusiastic about meeting his soulmate, but Bucky is not sure there’s a place for him in his soulmate’s life anymore.
Clint has spent his whole life dreading meeting his soulmate, drawing false conclusions from the hurtful words that were spoken in haste. They are both drawn to each other and are willing to give this a try, but will have to work together to overcome the shadows of their past.
Excerpt:
It’s one of the largest soulmarks Bucky has ever seen. The script in Bucky’s neat cursive handwriting starts at the crest of one shoulder and arcs below Clint’s collarbones to end at the crest of the other shoulder, golden letters that no tattoo ink has ever been able to replicate.

How do they do it? Boxed in like that. Back to the only open space around you? Sitting around all day. Nothing to do...” Clint’s voice is tinny through the comms. “Ooh, if you see any decent munchies, snag me a few. I missed dinner.”
“Hey, bird brain, focus. If we’re too late getting back, I can’t pick up Alpine from Kate’s till late tomorrow.” Bucky’s voice is low, while the building should be empty, they aren’t able to watch all the entrances from Clint’s angle on the opposite building. A lot of this relies on the element of surprise and stealth.
"Dude, you just walked past a break room.”
“Are you looking for stray guards, or are you looking for snacks?”
“Both, of course.” Clint scoffs on the open mic. “Wait! Nine o'clock!”
Bucky growls but reaches out and grabs a handful of caramels from a desk and puts them in the breast pocket of his tactical vest.
“You’re the best.”

Summary: A gun is pointed at him before he can even move from his position, the Soldier's metal arm steady in its aim. Clint sighs.
"Nemo," Clint says. "It's tattooed on your wrist, right here," he lifts his right hand and taps his left index finger where his palm ends.
The Soldier's eyes widen. "How do you know this?"

O’Shae Sibley was at a Brooklyn gas station with friends late Saturday night, filling up a car and blasting music by Beyoncé when a group of men approached and told them to stop dancing, according to friends.
The men began using slurs and Mr. Sibley, 28, a gay man who was a professional dancer and choreographer, confronted them, according to his friends and a video of the altercation. The argument escalated and one man stabbed Mr. Sibley, according to the police. Otis Pena, one of Mr. Sibley’s best friends, pressed on his wound to stop the bleeding before he was taken to Maimonides Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
“They murdered him because he’s gay, because he stood up for his friends,” Mr. Pena said in a Facebook video that he posted hours after the killing on Coney Island Avenue in Midwood. “His name was O’Shae and you all killed him. You all murdered him right in front of me.”
No arrests had been made by Monday, but the police said that the hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation.
The killing has devastated Mr. Sibley’s family — he is one of 11 siblings — and unnerved the city’s gay community. While the motive remains under investigation, the attack was a reminder of the biases that L.G.B.T.Q. people face.
The Anti-Defamation League and the advocacy group GLAAD issued a report in June indicating an increase in harassment and violence against gay and transgender people, including online bullying, gatherings of armed protesters outside drag shows and bomb threats against hospitals that provide gender transition care. In the first three weeks of June there were 101 such incidents, more than twice the number during the same time period the year before.
Brad Hoylman-Sigal, a gay state senator in New York, said he was “heartbroken and enraged” over Mr. Sibley’s killing.
“Gay joy is not crime,” he said on Twitter. “Hate-fueled attacks are.”
Mr. Sibley had moved from Philadelphia before the pandemic, hoping New York would provide more auditions and opportunities, said an aunt, Tondra Sibley, 49.
“It was a senseless crime,” she said. “O’Shae has always been a peacemaker. All he wanted to do was dance.”
She recalled him as a small boy, “gyrating and jerking” to Missy Elliott. When he got older, he honed his skills at the Philadelphia Dance Company and, on the advice of instructors, began ballet, taking advantage of his long, athletic frame.
Kemar Jewel, a 31-year-old choreographer and director, met Mr. Sibley in Philadelphia 13 years ago at the Attic Youth Center, where gay teenagers could go for after-school programs and activities. They were only a few years apart, but Mr. Sibley saw him as a mentor. “He was like, ‘You’re my uncle. I’m going to call you uncle,’” Mr. Jewel said.
Goofy and fun-loving, Mr. Sibley was serious about his craft. He would hunker down at Mr. Jewel’s apartment until 3 a.m. to study dance videos, from vogueing to the modern techniques introduced by Martha Graham and Lester Horton, American dancers and choreographers born around the turn of the 20th century.
“O’Shae was so well versed. He was great at tap, ballet, hip-hop,” Mr. Jewel said. “He was an incredible visual learner. I’ve seen him watch someone do something twice and then just do it.”
Mr. Jewel, who is in London working on a show, said he was sleeping on Sunday morning when Mr. Pena called to tell him what had happened.
At the gas station, Mr. Sibley and his friends had been playing “Renaissance” by Beyoncé and vogueing, a style of dance that began as an imitation of fashion models in the 1980s and has evolved as an expression of pride and protest.
That is when the group of men approached, calling them names, Mr. Jewel said, recalling the account of Mr. Pena, who could not be reached for comment.
Both Mr. Sibley and Mr. Pena told them, “Stop saying that. There is nothing wrong with being gay.”
Mr. Sibley fought with them, and he was stabbed as Mr. Pena ran to intervene, Mr. Jewel said.
At the Brownsville building where Mr. Sibley lived alone in a studio, his neighbor, Beckenbaur Hamilton, 51, said he had warned the younger man against being so open about his sexuality. Mr. Hamilton, who is also gay, recalled attacks he had suffered in his 20s when going out to clubs, and said that he has recently been overhearing comments on the street about “all these rights” gay people have.
“O’Shae wasn’t afraid of being who he was,” Mr. Hamilton said. “He would defend his friends.”
They loved dancing outside and delighted in drawing a crowd. “But I’d see how people looked at them,” Mr. Hamilton said. “There was a worry in the back of my mind.”
In his video, Mr. Pena described Mr. Sibley as his brother and said the two were “always out and loud.”
“We as a community don’t deserve this,” Mr. Pena said. “We may be gay, but we exist. We’re not going to live in fear. We’re not going to live hiding.”

For almost a decade I worked at a small Holocaust museum in Brooklyn. The mission was simple and impactful. While most Holocaust museums focus on the perpetrators, the Nazis, and how they came to power, the impact of propaganda, and the extent of their unimaginable evil, our museum centered on victims of the Holocaust: the Jews and their experiences. We constructed period rooms with prewar artifacts, showing how Jews lived in different communities in prewar Europe. We displayed report cards Jewish children received in schools and notices about what time to bring your family’s cholent to the local bakery before Shabbat.
The main difference, to my mind, in focusing on perpetrators vs. victims is the ability to universalize the message. It’s easy to demonstrate how propaganda works, how attractive antisemitism becomes and has always been especially in times of turmoil and stress, and how groupthink can convince regular people to commit evil beyond imagination. Almost every day since October 7th I have reflected on how the increased acceptability of antisemitism in the world is just a new chapter in historical cycles that have gone on for thousands of years.
Focusing on victims, however, is particular. This is how Jewish communities, Jewish leaders and Jewish individuals respond to heightened danger. It’s a message about suffering and equally about resilience.
Another unique aspect of this museum was its inclusivity of the Orthodox experience, something that has been, until recently, shamefully neglected by many Holocaust institutions. Most prewar German Jews were famously secular and seemingly well integrated into German society, while Poland’s Jewish community, almost completely wiped out by the Shoah, were more traditional in their lifestyles.
As director of collections, I often spoke to Holocaust survivors and their children who would share religious objects with me that they hadn’t previously donated, not because they didn’t want their items to bear witness but because the context, spiritual meaning and resilience encoded within a pair of tefillin, for example, needed to be honored just as much as the courage necessary to sneak in a religious object into a concentration camp.
Even in the face of undeniable terror, we maintained agency in our identity, in our hopes, in our relationships, in our prayers and in our songs. When you turn the Holocaust into a generic moral lesson you rob it of its particular evil and you rob the victims of their own narratives. It becomes an allegory rather than a historical event and thus, removed a little more from reality, it gets whitewashed.
“Zone of Interest” is a movie about evil. It is a movie about people’s ability to not see what they don’t want to see. No matter how powerful and unflinching, Jonathan Glazer’s film is a Holocaust film with no Jews. This is what allows the director and filmmaker to declare:
“Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation, which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.”
I believe his words are wrong and a betrayal, and his refuting Judaism is privileged, because his home, family and existence are not being threatened; it is also disrespectful. Setting aside the fact that Gaza has not been occupied since 2005, Glazer tells us in his film and in his speech that he is more interested in the morality lessons of the Holocaust than in the stories, the experiences, and the victims. This is what he takes from the Holocaust.
What do I learn from the Holocaust? That I will always be a Jew no matter what I say and no matter what I do. But far from that being an embarrassment, it is a core piece of my identity and a source of immense pride and comfort; pride in our survival and comfort in knowing that Jews all over the world are my family. The hostages? They are my family. That half of the world’s Jewish population who is living in Israel and fighting for its very survival? They are my family.
Were Jonathan Glazer alive and safe in America during World War Two, would he have refuted his Judaism being used to justify the murder of Nazis in the name of liberating Jews? Hamas and all proxies of the Islamist regime of Iran are not so different. They have never hidden their genocidal agenda. Indeed, it’s in its charter. The massacre of 1,163 Israelis on October 7th is part of its strategy; it’s one more step towards the complete annihilation of the Jewish state. That is not a justification of war. War is terrible and necessarily has undeserving victims. War is not to be celebrated but avoided as much as possible in favor of diplomatic channels when open to us. But to accuse us Jews of using our Judaism to justify inflicting evil when Israel’s war is actually a push towards survival is wrong. We have agency. We don’t want to be annihilated and we will fight back.
In the long Jewish tradition of tragedy, I have no choice but to end on hope. Recently, our modern Orthodox congregation invited a group of chassidim to join us and to lead the davening. At Shacharit, we sang a song that has become an anthem in this historical moment, “Achenu Kol Beit Yisrael – all Jews are siblings,” first found in an 11th century siddur.
As for our brothers, the whole house of Israel, who are given over to trouble or captivity, whether they abide on the sea or on the dry land:
May the All-present have mercy upon them, and bring them forth from trouble to prosperity, from darkness to light, and from subjection to redemption, now speedily and at a near time.
To our enemies, all Jews, including chassidic and modern Orthodox Jews, surely look the same. Sadly, however, we ourselves often focus on our differences. Not now. Every Jew is my sibling. Glazer, you are my sibling too. Siblings can disagree and I don’t know about you but I will never ever refute my siblings.

A physician explores the obstacles keeping Black people out of medicine
When Dr. Uché Blackstock and her twin sister graduated from Harvard Medical School in 2005, they became the school’s first Black mother-daughter legacies. Their mother had received her medical degree three decades before and had an enormous influence over Blackstock’s career ambitions.
“She was a leader of a black woman physician group in Brooklyn. And so for many years, I thought that most physicians were Black women,” Blackstock said in an interview with “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal. “Until I got to college and medical school, and I realized that we actually are only about less than 3% of all physicians.”
Tumblr media
From an early age, my twin sister, Oni, and I loved to play with our mother’s doctor’s bag. It was an old-school, heavy black leather bag, worn and cracked around the edges, that snapped open from the top to reveal the medical instruments inside. Her full name was written in faded golden uppercase letters across one side of the bag, followed by “M.D.” The bag lived in her bedroom, under her bureau. As children, we were always getting into her business, whether it was looking through old papers and photographs in the small file cabinet in her room or pulling out shoes and scarves from her closet. We knew that the medical bag was important to her, so that made it important to us.
Whenever we could, we snuck up into her room, emptying out the contents of the bag on the floor: her stethoscope, with its long rubber tubing, the little hammer to test reflexes, the otoscope for ear exams, the ophthalmoscope for looking at the eyes. Then we’d sit and play doctor together. I’d listen to the thump, thump, thump of my sister’s heart with the stethoscope in my ears or I’d hop up onto the bed so Oni could hit just under my knee with the reflex hammer, making my leg flip up quickly. If our mother came in and found us mid-game, she would smile warmly. She was a petite woman who wore her hair natural and in a small Afro.
“Girls, please be careful with those. They’re all quite delicate,” she warned us.
Except for the stethoscope, I didn’t know any of the names of the precious contents of the bag, but I understood these were the tools of our mother’s trade. By the time my sister and I got to Harvard Medical School, the instruments were as familiar to us as the forks and spoons in our kitchen.
The children’s advocate Marian Wright Edelman once famously pointed out, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” Growing up in Brooklyn in the 1980s and ’90s, we saw Black women who were physicians all around us. Our mother practiced medicine at Kings County Hospital Center and its state affiliate, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, not far from our home in central Brooklyn. Our own pediatrician, Dr. June Mulvaney, was a Black woman. We loved going to see Dr. Mulvaney, even if vaccinations were involved, because she was a bespectacled, kind older woman with soft hands and an even softer smile, who was a good friend of our mother’s. Another Black physician, Dr. Mildred Clarke, an obstetrician-gynecologist, lived on our block. We would often see Dr. Clarke while out running errands, stopping to chat about the most recent neighborhood news. Our mother was the president of an organization of local Black women physicians that included Dr. Clarke and Dr. Mulvaney. They were all very put-together, fiercely intelligent women who held themselves with pride and devoted their little spare time educating their community through holding events like local health fairs.
From the day she gave birth to us at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, our mother was determined that my sister and I should have every opportunity she had lacked. We grew up in the home our family owned on St. Mark’s Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Back then, Crown Heights was a bustling neighborhood that was home to many middle-class and working-class families, a uniquely Brooklyn mix of Black Americans and immigrants from the Caribbean like our father, Earl Blackstock, who was born in Jamaica. Our mother was constantly reading to us as small children, bringing us to the library for story time or taking us on educational adventures in Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. When we got older and entered grade school, she was the kind of mother who didn’t hesitate to give us extra assignments if she felt our teachers weren’t assigning enough challenging work. If we had friends over for sleepovers, she’d cue up the movie and popcorn, and when the movie was over, she’d announce it was time to do our math worksheets. Our friends, who also had to do the worksheets, didn’t seem to mind too much—somehow, she made it all seem like part of the fun. Saturdays were for a host of extracurricular activities: violin lessons, music theory, modern dance, and gymnastics. I can still picture her, leaning against the sink in our old kitchen, scouring the newspaper for educational activities while we were on vacation from school. Her goal was to keep us stimulated—always. Much to our dismay, we were rarely allowed to watch television. On weekends and holidays, we went to the most popular NYC museums, the United Nations, science exhibits, with our mother narrating, explaining, pointing things out as we went along. Even a walk around our neighborhood was an educational adventure, with her perusing her pocket-size book on flowers and pointing out the different types in our neighbors’ front yards.
“Girls, come over here. Look at these gorgeous azaleas,” she’d say to us, bending down to touch the flowers lightly with her slender fingers. “They bloom only in the springtime,” she’d continue as we peered over her shoulders.
Looking back, I think she understood that this world was going to be tough on us and she needed to make sure we were fully prepared, but also that we experienced moments of joy.
For our mother, science was part of that joy. Once we went to a science exhibit where there was a real cow’s eyeball on display so that kids could pick it up and see how an eye worked. At first, my sister and I recoiled from touching the large white eye with its spidery blood vessels, but our mother persuaded us to cradle the strange object in our hands, then she leaned in close and explained the mechanisms of the eye to us in great detail. What had scared us a few moments before became a way to introduce us to the wonder of sight.
When summer came around, she signed us up for science programs, including one at her hospital, where she taught some of our sessions. Her specialty was nephrology, the study of the kidneys, and I have a clear memory of sitting in class at age twelve, with a small group of other students, watching her standing in front of the chalkboard, wearing her long white coat over her small frame. I felt so proud to have her up in front of the room teaching a classroom of my peers.
As she took a big piece of white chalk, she asked us, “Did you know that the kidney is one of the most sophisticated organs in our bodies?”
She drew a long looping shape on the board, exclaiming, “And this is the nephron, the smallest unit of the kidney! It’s a powerhouse.”
I remember her pulling a cylinder-shaped filter from a dialysis machine, to show us how it processed the blood from patients. She explained to us, in easy-to-understand terms, how this plain looking filter saved lives. It was in that moment, sitting in that classroom as a twelve-year-old on a hot summer day, that I realized the power of my mother’s work—to heal, to repair, to care. To be the difference between someone living and dying. I felt in awe of her.
I later learned that our mother chose her specialty, nephrology, because it’s one of the most difficult specialties in medicine—the kidneys are incredibly complex organs, and she loved a challenge. But I believe she also went into the field because kidney disease disproportionately affects Black people, and she wanted to help in some way. Because poorly controlled blood pressure and blood sugar negatively impact the kidney’s function, many of her patients also had these conditions, which were the result of lack of access to quality care and the chronic pressure of living with racism and other structural inequities. In her work, my mother was determined to address these entrenched health problems to the utmost of her abilities.
It wasn’t only patients who benefited from her time and attention. Black medical students and junior faculty at Downstate sought her out for inspiration and advice and she became a mentor to a generation of Brooklyn physicians, even inspiring those in health care who weren’t physicians, but physician assistants, nurses, and social workers. Many years later, as an adult, I ran into a former student of my mother’s at a medical conference in the city. We made eye contact across the room, and she smiled and made her way toward me, later saying that she had recognized me because I looked so much like my mother. She immediately introduced herself, hugged me tightly, and told me that when she was a third-year medical student doing her clinical clerkship, she had gone to see my mother and confessed how nervous she felt about presenting patient cases. She had explained how she was immobilized with fear and anxiety when it came her turn to describe the patient’s medical history and plan for treatment to the team. From then on, my mother met with her every morning, before the start of the day, so they could practice her oral presentations together. This wasn’t part of my mother’s role or responsibility at Downstate—she wasn’t even on the woman’s team. But my mother knew how it felt to be a student looking for that kind of support, and so she became the mentor she wished she’d had. Today, that student is the associate dean in the Office of Diversity Education and Research at a New York City medical school.
Our mother was tireless in her work ethic. Even after she left the hospital, her work wasn’t done. Back then, she was president of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society, a local organization of Black women physicians named after the third Black woman to obtain a medical degree in the US and the first in New York state. During the society’s regular meetings, Oni and I would sit in the back of a large conference room, doing our homework, whispering, or passing silly notes back and forth, as my mother and her colleagues handled their serious business. They spent considerable time planning community health fairs, where they would dispense information about diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health issues rampant in our community. At the fairs, they would take people’s vital signs, recommend follow-up services, and counsel neighbors about healthy diet and exercise. Our mother and the other women in her organization were our role models. They worked, they raised children, they took care of their households, and they gave back to their communities.
I don’t think it ever occurred to Oni and me to do anything else with our lives but to follow in their footsteps.

Genuinely beyond excited for this thing a friend and I are organizing, so much so that at 2:40 am I am having trouble stopping myself from continuing to work on this planning spreadsheet.
Long shot, but if you happen to have a favorite cookbook by a queer author, please please please please please please let me know.
You remember that cookbook club in my parents town I am so in love with?
Well, let's just say that a queer variant may be coming to the Brooklyn Community Pride Center sometime soon and that the queer cookbook club will focus on boosting queer author's books while building a community of queer folks who love to cook and want to bond over it shared meals together. Like we have already worked out with the Pride Center a monthly recurring time slot at one of their locations and really just need to finalize the details before publicly launching sign ups for our first meeting type this may be coming soon.

I have a question for everyone sharing the images & videos of them Purple Scripture Eaters, them GoGo Yahweh Rangers, them Black Hebrew IsItRealRites?, them New Kults On the Blacks...so please answer my question honestly.🙋🏿‍♂️ My question is; aside from the from the pride you feel seeing Black Men in an Alpha Male Purple Marching Pagent, chanting outside a basketball arena...for a damn ball-chaser...instead of opposing the arena for being part of the displacement & destruction of Brooklyns most vibrant Black communities...but I digress.🤷🏿‍♂️ You....individuals who are impressed & praise this Cult & their Pagent; have yall....ever taken a moment to read their literature? Do understand their Theology & their Apocolyptic Mission?💁🏿‍♂️ This Black Hebrew Israelite Cult is literally praying for & equipping themselves in preparation for Yahweh to give them the command to murder millions of people who refuse to align with their deranged cult, & Black people are at the top of their hit list because we are the Chosen who've rejected God's Covenant!☠️ How the hell is an Old Testament or Torah based cult trending positively in the Black Community!?!? The Torah is one of the first sources of justification for Racism & Enslavement!📖 #TheCureOfHam #TheMarkOfCain Let's look at this shit from a religious point of view: When was the last time you've read the Torah or the Old Testament, it's a set of Religious Dogma so deranged that God jumped into Mary's VaJayJay to be born & executed to forge a "New Covenant" with humans!👼🏿 The Old Testament was too insane for the God who inspired it...yet talk rallying around a Cult that wants to reinstate Old Testament laws & standards for the entire African Diaspora!🤦🏿‍♂️ I been struggling to free my People from the grip of the Islam & Christianity, yet I'm watching us regress into the primitive predecessor of these two Colonizer Religions!✝️☪️✡️ I'm gotta go lay down, enjoy your day. My opportunity to say "I told you so" in this issue will be here sooner than later, until then please educate yourself & the community on the harm of the BHI & Black Cults in general.👨🏿‍🏫 PS:.... Chapter II: Arkham Asylum
In my Criminal Law class, we've been learning about the abolitionist movement and prison reform. I've found myself agreeing with a lot of the stances and reasoning the Abolitionists have petitioned for eradicating the prison system - primarily for petty crimes and those incarcerated for being homeless (the criminal legal system has systemically and historically served as a means of punishing poor people, but more on that later).
While lawyers and Abolitionist activists have been trying to reform and free oppressed people from the Big House, I've been having my own housing challenges.
After undergrad (where the events of the prequel series, The Real Gotham: Origins, occurred) I moved to the South Bronx, New York City. It was a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom, for me and 3 coworkers who all served for a nonprofit organization centered on education reform (though how much The Organization combatted versus condoned educational inequality is to be debated throughout this series). The apartment was nice - very nice compared to the apartments I grew up struggling to complete a lease in. We were in an ideal location for public transport. The local eateries I frequented almost compensated for the inevitable contribution to gentrification I caused by moving here in the first place. Until a select group of neighbors moved in upstairs and before the block became increasingly more policed (2 homicides occurred within a month's span of each other at the start of summer), it was actually a nice place to live.
So when my roommates suddenly decided not to renew our lease, I felt like our T.J. Maxx rug had been pulled right from under me - but I didn't completely hate the idea of moving elsewhere, either.
Part of orientation with The Organization encouraged us to be proud of the NYC burrough we were repping. One of my roommates was born and raised in Brooklyn, and ofc with the hype Brooklyn gets on NYC-Transplant-TikTok, she earned respect and gas from the rest of our cohort quickly. Another roommate repped Staten Island, which earned love and hate both because of Pete Davidson. My third roommate was from New Jersey - but they never said "New Jersey", it was always just "Jersey."
I obviously was not a New Yorker and was not at all proud to hail from such a conservative state in the Midwest, so I decidedly attempted to embrace the pride of living in the Bronx, arguably - with Brooklyn, hence the constant shade between BK and The BX - the home of modern hiphop and rap (suck it Jay Z).
And there were good reasons to be proud of living in The BX; it's the only borough that begins with "The," it's a melting pot of Afro-Latino culture (something I had not at all encountered until I moved here), it took my virginity of eating tostones, churros, and quesabirria tacos.
But I think the biggest pride of The Bronx is that it's the last borough to be massively gentrified by white transplants. Even now, I see many people sharing community on stoops and I hear Hispanic music being played in the streets. Some of these houses/apartments are living testaments of history, not having been hardly touched by the decades of families and friends who resided in them. The gentrification is definitely still happening, but it seems to be consuming The Bronx at a much slower pace than the other boroughs.
So keep all of this in mind as I tell you about my sublet.. with two white sisters of the Catholic church.
I have nothing against Catholics - I myself am spiritual/Christian and I went to a Catholic university. I have nothing against white people - I myself am half-white.
But considering everything I've come to know and experience as a Black woman (yes, mixed technically but still definitely perceived as a Black woman - in both good and bad ways as you could probably imagine), it's hard not to wonder about the historical implications behind this setup.
I mean, I read those news stories when so many bodies of Native American children were found where Catholic elementary schools once stood. I see how out of place these white Catholic sisters look amongst the Black and Brown neighbors on our street, and I notice the odd glances (sometimes even winces) from these neighbors when they see the two 70+-year-old sisters taking out the trash. In a city where the standard is to mind your business and avoid eye contact, where the norm is to trust no one, I witness so many neighbors get nervous seeing these dainty old sisters on the sidewalk.
And though they are kind - and clearly generous to be letting me stay with them at such an affordable rent - the lawyer/social activist in me recognizes the historical implications of two white sisters living in an old 4-floor house in a neighborhood dominated by Black Hispanics.
It's almost comparable to what living in Arkham Asylum must be like; though I am out most of the day, I cannot help but have some anxiously intrusive thoughts about how they may think of me or plan to treat me. Have they prepared a lecture for me about my curls shedding in the shower? Are they planning to guilt me into sacrificing school/free time to fulfill unreasonable household/cleaning responsibilities? Do they assume I'll be irresponsibly smoking weed on the weekends with friends and should I expect to have my shit searched while I'm at school because of that racist stereotype? (thanks War on Drugs)
I hate having such anxious thoughts, but when you're a poor Black person living in a historically white-owned house with two white Catholic sisters who moved here as part of a community/nonprofit initiative built on white saviorism, it's hard not to wonder.
Not to mention the house is lowkey haunted.
Supposedly, this house once belonged to an extremely wealthy family; there's a knob in the center of the living room floor that used to be a button to ring for the servants. Ironically, it is directly under this button, on the ground floor in a small room off-side from the kitchen which was once the servant's quarters, where I am staying. How this house came into the possession of the Catholic church is still a mystery to me, but hopefully I'll be able to give y'all the history lesson on it soon.

Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist. By Judith Heumann (with Kristen Joiner). Beacon Press, 2020.
Rating: 3/5 stars
Genre: memoir
Series: N/A
Summary: A story of fighting to belong in a world that wasn't built for all of us and of one woman's activism—from the streets of Brooklyn and San Francisco to inside the halls of Washington—Being Heumann recounts Judy Heumann's lifelong battle to achieve respect, acceptance, and inclusion in society.
Paralyzed from polio at eighteen months, Judy's struggle for equality began early in life. From fighting to attend grade school after being described as a "fire hazard" to later winning a lawsuit against the New York City school system for denying her a teacher's license because of her paralysis, Judy's actions set a precedent that fundamentally improved rights for disabled people.
As a young woman, Judy rolled her wheelchair through the doors of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in San Francisco as a leader of the Section 504 Sit-In, the longest takeover of a governmental building in US history. Working with a community of over 150 disabled activists and allies, Judy successfully pressured the Carter administration to implement protections for disabled peoples' rights, sparking a national movement and leading to the creation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
***Full review below.***
CONTENT WARNINGS: ableism, references to the Holocaust
I saw this book on a disability studies reading list, so in honornof Disability Pride Month, I decided to pick it up. I didn't know much about Judith Heumann going in, so I was excited to learn about her and her work.
Unfortunately, this book wasn't as insightful or dazzling as I had hoped it would be. To be clear, most of Judith's experiences and stories are worth telling; I'm not judging the book based on how entertaining her life is or isn't. What really made this book a struggle was the writing.
At the macro-level, Heumann's storytelling feels a bit stiff. Not only does it seem to breeze through important or emotional moments, but the narrative style feels very facts-based, privileging telling over showing. There was a lot of "I felt X" or "I did Y," and while I don't expect memoirs to read like fiction, I also think memoirs should aim for emotional insight and some degree of human connection - part of which is formed through the method of storytelling, not just the bare facts.
On a micro-level, I found some of Heumann's sentences tedious. A lot of them are of similar length, making for a robotic tone, and the language is simple to the point of almost feeling cliche. I also struggled with some sentences that felt like they repeated words or information (for example: "later, one of the protesters recalled later..."), perhaps indicating that it needed a better editor.
Still, I don't think this book is all bad. I really loved the way Heumann acknowledged the group effort it takes to change society, which de-centered herself and put emphasis on collective action. I also liked that she didn't dwell on the details of discrimination, but focused on moments of connection (between herself and her family, her friends, her classmates, etc). In this way, her memoir felt less like a soul-bearing expose and more like encouragement to band together and fight for justice.
I also think learning the history of what it was like to be disabled before the ADA and ACA is important. Although America today is far from being fully accessible, it helps to remind ourselves where we started. Heumann includes a lot of details such as the inaccessibility of sidewalks, the lack of ramps, and even blatant refusal to allow disabled folks to attend school. This is not to say we should be "grateful" for what we have now, but knowing how activists have fought and won for what we do have is helpful and necessary for future change.
TL;DR: Being Heumann contains a lot of important history, but as a memoir, it doesn't necessarily offer more than a Wikipedia page. The strongest parts of this book focused on collective action, while the weakest were defined by poor writing.

The Economic Impact of Music Festivals on Local Communities
Music festivals are more than just a fun gathering for music lovers; they are powerful economic engines that drive significant benefits to local communities transforming towns and cities. Let's dive into how music festivals create ripples of economic prosperity.
Boosting Local Businesses
When a music festival comes to town, local businesses experience a surge in customers. Hotels, restaurants, and shops see a massive influx of visitors, eager to spend on accommodation, food, and souvenirs. For instance, a small-town café might suddenly find itself serving hundreds of festival-goers, while nearby hotels book out months in advance. This increased demand often leads to higher revenue for these businesses, sometimes equating to what they might earn in several months condensed into just a few days.
Tumblr media
Job Creation
Music festivals also create numerous job opportunities, both temporary and permanent. Event organizers hire locals for various roles, from ticket sellers and security personnel to stagehands and cleaners. Additionally, local businesses might need extra hands to manage the increased workload. This temporary employment can provide a financial boost to community members and sometimes even lead to permanent job opportunities as businesses expand to accommodate future events.
Infrastructure Development
Hosting a major music festival often necessitates improvements to local infrastructure. Roads might be upgraded, public transportation services increased, and facilities enhanced to accommodate the influx of visitors. These improvements benefit the community long after the festival has ended, providing better amenities and infrastructure for residents.
Tumblr media
Cultural and Social Benefits
Beyond the economic gains, music festivals enrich the cultural fabric of local communities. They bring diverse groups of people together, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. Local artists and performers often get a platform to showcase their talents, gaining exposure and opportunities they might not have had otherwise. The festival atmosphere can also inspire community pride and cohesion, with residents coming together to support and participate in the event.
Tumblr media
Long-term Tourism
A successful music festival can put a location on the map, attracting tourists year-round. Visitors who come for the festival might discover other attractions and decide to return. Word-of-mouth and social media buzz can turn a once-overlooked town into a popular destination. This sustained interest keeps the economic benefits flowing long after the festival has packed up and moved on.
Inspiring Community Projects
The economic boost from music festivals can inspire community projects and initiatives. Profits generated by the festival can be reinvested into local schools, parks, and community centers. Additionally, the event can spark new ideas for other events and activities, fostering a vibrant community spirit and encouraging ongoing cultural and economic development.
Music festivals are more than just an excuse to enjoy great music; they are a vital force for economic growth and community development. From boosting local businesses and creating jobs to improving infrastructure and fostering long-term tourism, these events leave a lasting positive impact. And who knows, you might even leave inspired to pick up some new music gear from  many of such notable audio shops like VIP PRO AUDIO in Brooklyn often participate in such music festivals adding even more value to the vibrant local economy. Now that's something worth celebrating! So next time you attend a music festival, remember that you’re not just having a good time – you’re contributing to the prosperity and vitality of the host community. Now that's something worth celebrating!

Miguel O'Hara x Foodie Pre-diabetic Spiderwoman!OC
Miguel with a chubby, but very pretty Spider-Woman!S/O named Marina who's struggled with her weight since she was a little girl. I'm thinking of making her inspired by a diving bell spider as water is her element. Her suit is mainly aqua with cobalt blue detailing & has webbing between the fingers & retractable flippers to make it easier to swim. (As part of the suit.) Having been bitten by a diving bell spider, she's technically become amphibious & is able to filter oxygen from the water through her skin (which, I know is more of a frog thing, but Miles has a built in taser & can turn invisible, I don't wanna hear it).
Her official alias is the Diving Belle, but the residents of Bensonhurt specifically call her their Tuffobella because they consider her one of theirs. (Yes, she very much does enjoy puns. But only the good ones & this one is very good.) Has very quickly learned A LOT about scuba diving. Because of all this & her home's location, she works a lot at Brighton Beach when there isn't much crime going on. Sort of acting as an extra lifeguard. She also patrols the New York Harbor.
She's Colonial Spanish, Columbian, & Italian & is very proud of her heritage. Is a polyglot & polylingual, being fluent in American English, Brooklyn Italian, Luisiana French, & ALS. She isn't fluent in Italian or any sort of Spanish, but she has started to learn them because of her own personal interest. She's actually having the most difficulty with Italian because her Brooklyn accent keeps shining through. Which, she has a very Brooklyn accent. Not, like, obnoxiously so as if she's putting on a voice, but it's still very noticeable but in a natural way. The reason being that unlike Miles or Peter B.'s Brooklyn, her Brooklyn has managed to more reliably maintain its many cultural identities throughout the years. At least much more so than theirs.
Interestingly, she has a bit of Luisianna in her accent that gets stronger depending on the situation & who she's talking to. Which, when paired with her Brooklyn accent, might come across as either a bit odd sounding or very interesting. I'm not sure which.
She's actually been instrumental in the revival of her community's "we take care of our own" mentality & cultural pride. Due to her presence, her boroughs residents have begun to take on more community efforts & is pushing back against progressive influences & the hypersexualization of schools.
Corrupt police in local departments have been getting rooted out resulting in more good cops being hired as a result of strictor hiring requirements, such as psyche evals, & less police brutality, as well as more police attentiveness. When people are kidnapped in the area, people keep an eye out & report what they see immediately, & if they see muggings or kidnappings themselves, they do whatever they can to help whether directly or indirectly.
Citizens are also cleaning up areas & helping to repair community centers & parks & streets. As well as helping their neighbors to fix their homes. Not to mention, those with a greater means have begun to donate food & money to orphanages & homeless shelters. Though, they refuse to do so through charities that they don't know for a fact will get the donations to where they need to go as they don't know who they can trust. They instead began either delivering the donations directly or going through small, local churches. This results in much less misuse of the donations.
Marina mostly grew up in Brooklyn, in Bensonhurt specifically, but has a lot of family on her mother's side in Louisiana, which is where the other part of her accent comes from. Her grandparents & aunts & uncles (her mother's side of the family tends to have a lot of kids) being specifically from Natchitoches & they are one of the few farming families left there. Though her grandparents still live there & work the farm, her uncle & his family have largely begun to take it over as the next generation. Her youngest aunt & her family also lives in New Orleans.
It's been a tradition since her great, great grandfather's time to gather the entire family together every Easter, Thanksgiving, & Christmas for a potluck celebration. This has continued on till this day. Almost everyone always manages to come & everyone brings something. Though, people take turns hosting them. This results in everyone remaining very close-knit, as well as warm & welcoming.
I kinda wanna see her take Miguel to one & he ends up being overwhelmed with the outpouring of warmth & welcome. He ends up being a bit of a loner at the party, sticking mostly to Marina's side, but finds that he greatly enjoys watching his gf's family interact. It is very different to most places he's been as he generally sticks in Nueva York & its alternate versions as that's mostly were all the anomalies show up. It's been a long time since he's been outside of the state.
Marina does not care for the modern minimalist look in any capacity. Preferring more lively & homey aesthetics with bright colors & organized clutter. But is willing to compromise with her bf if he insists.
Loves to decorate things diy with mosaic & stained glass & paint because she's always been very crafty. She frequently makes really pretty mosaic stepping stones, stone tables & benches, bird baths, ect & sells them online. Not to mention using them to decorate when she can. Makes both the bright, colorful kind & the pebble ones. Her Central Park actually has quite a few of her pieces.
Collects interesting rocks, pebbles, & shells to use in her mosaics & has jars full of them in her art room.
Actually does some street art, but it tends to be very different from the art that Miles does, being more artistic murals than urban graffiti. Things like depictions of nature, especially florals. All whimsical & bright & dreamlike, even a little bit psychedelic. Like stuff outta the Beatles animated video or a Luiza Vizoli painting. Never trespasses or anything, & only does her art where it's allowed. She even gets commissions.
For a reference to Luiza Vizoli's work, here:
Tumblr media
Most definitely not my art. But it's beautiful.
For home decor, she enjoys colorful, whimsical, cozy, & vintage. Just very Bohemian in a lot of ways. Loves vintage things. Especially furniture. Hates gray walls. They just look so blah to her.
Despite her preferred style being bright & cheery, she actually finds it very easy to incorporate other people's styles while still maintaining her artistic identity. Hobie loved the poster she designed for his band. It was still very her style while incorporating a fantastically punk rock aesthetic. Like, it was dark & fun & high energy with his silhouette in a spotlight, while still being extremely whimsical & imaginative with music seeming to weave through the air. He said that you could practically hear the music & feel the vibrations of the guitar just looking at it. It got him so amped for his next show!
Marina very much enjoys fishing. Wants to learn to surf, but worries that her weight will make it impossible. Loves to dance (absolutely does the whole Micheal Jackson Spiderman Dance thing at Walmart in her spare time) & has very eclectic tastes in music; ranging from country, to orchestral, to classic rock, to orchestral/hiphop fusion. Secretly wanted to grow up to be a mermaid as a little girl.
(Ariel was her idol & she was so pissed when Disney did a half-assed remake. It wasn't that she disliked the actress they used, she just feels like if you're going to hire a black actress for a classically white part, then do something interesting with it like Princess & the Frog. Hell, they could've made this an African twist on the classic Little Mermaid story & made Ariel into a Mami Wata! That would've been cool! Instead, they barely changed anything & just made Ariel black! Man, Triton was still white & Ariel's sisters are just all different races! Like, how many women has that man slept with?? Or are they all adopted?! If you're gonna raceswap, do it in a way that makes fucking sense!! Also Sebastian was a Ghost Crab which would've drowned in the ocean! She will rant for hours! She's apparently adorable when she's angry though. Like a squirrel.)
She's very sweet, helpful, sunny, & polite to most people (she smiles at damn near everyone & opens the door for anyone regardless of sex or identity, especially if they need help) so long as they're not assholes to her or those around her, especially those she cares about, but she also has a fiery temper & a great enjoyment for civil debate. Insanely smart & arguing with her when she's got an axe to grind honestly feels a little bit like playing chess with a master. She can also be very sassy in a surprisingly British way (dry & witty & sarcastic) & very funny in an organic way when she wants to be.
She majored in biochemistry & molecular biology, but also took several medical classes after becoming Diving Belle. She also became EMT certified & lifeguard certified both as herself & as Diving Belle so that she could help within the boundaries of the law whenever possible.
Because of her size, her rogues tend to make jabs at her weight, but she's reached a level of maturity where she'll generally just roll her eyes & be like "Oh, yes. Aim for the low-hanging fruit. So very clever & original. Must've taken a lot of effort on your part." All while being very deadpan about it.
Those sorts of things generally don't phase her because she's very comfortable with herself as a person. However, that doesn't mean that she doesn't sometimes get low about it. Doesn't let it wiggle it's way in… but still appreciates comfort at times.
Anyway, she's been more on the big side since she was in elementary school when she was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia & put on a medicine that caused her to gain 80 pounds in a year. Before that, she was a toothpick. Her parents argued with the doctor over it, but she was very haughty about it, saying that she knew what she was doing, so they fired her ass quick, but Marina's been heavy ever since.
She's since become a foodie who loves to cook & bake & has a big sweet tooth & very much enjoys things like food history (think Dylan Hollis & Tasting History), as well as molecular & cultural gastronomy.
She's not depressed nor does she hate herself, in fact she really likes herself (in a self-compassion way, not an egotistical or narcissistic way) & is even able to admit that she has a nice face. She just wants to be more fit & healthy & wants to be able to be proud of her figure. Not to mention how much she wants kids of her own blood (totally cool with adoption, she just also wants biological children) & being too heavy makes that dangerous. She even finds it easy to exercise as she very much enjoys swimming & it's easy for her to go hours exercising in the water everyday without breaks.
But no diet she ever went on seemed to work as she couldn't stick to it because they made her feel miserable due to how not tasty low-cal food is to her.
However, it wasn't until she was diagnosed with pre-diabetes that shit got real for her.
She's since found the ideal diet for her which involves doing keto until she enters ketosis, staying in ketosis for a couple days, then taking a day off to eat whatever so long as she remains under 2100 cals.
She finds it extremely easy to stick to & it's been working wonderfully. She's so far lost 50 pounds in just a couple of months & that's the most she's ever lost when on a diet! She's super proud of herself!
She's also gotten out of pre-diabetes recently. It's the first time ever that she's ever legitimately felt that she could actually manage to reach a healthy weight without the need for surgery & it makes her feel proud of herself!
This also causes her to become interested in nutritional gastronomy as a means to understand how food affects the body.
