Ranking the Top 75 Spuffy Moments

In preparation for this study of all the episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer I'm gonna be starting here soon, I compiled a list of my top 75 Spuffy moments.

Actually I compiled a list of every single Spuffy moment (moments that either have a Spike and Buffy interaction, an action that is a result of Spuffy, or someone alluding to Spuffy in some relevant way) and there are 515 of them. 515!!

But I knew I'd only want to talk about the best in my rambles about this show, so I ranked my top 75. Because 50 leaves out a lot of really GOOD stuff, and 100 had me picking moments that were good, but no better than the other 415 I was leaving behind anyway. So 75 felt like a sweet spot of the very BEST of the best, while still knowing there's so many great ones that went unsaid.

I use the term "moment" loosely because sometimes it's a line, sometimes a scene, sometimes a couple different things in the span of the same five minutes, but what I considered to be wrapped up until the sweet vague title of "moment." These were selected based on how significant they are, how memorable they are, how romantic they are, how much I personally like them.

The way I ranked these was sort of similar to me ranking the episodes, except that I actually wrote all 515 in a list and circled my faves for each season, whittled the full number down to 75, and then ranked them by top 5, and top 5 again, all the way down the list.

Again this is just my opinion, not based on polls or stats, and as there truly are 440 Spuffy moments not listed here, I know you'll see some of your faves missing! But these are mine.

bc uh he-LLO? hyenas are like... one of the BIG popular matriarchal animals and we just acted like xander was all scary now? pshh. I mean he was hyenas are scary but buffy is absolutely highest rank top dog here no wayyy he'd be all scary to her since they're already y'know a "pack" of sorts. like I'm pretty sure he'd still defer to her. plus willow! her making friends with buffy first and just generally being a girl he'd rank below her as well (though I do wonder where his stance with giles would be)

and I get that xander already sorta had a new clan with the other possessed kids but even then why was HE at the top of that hierarchy?? in fact it was so barely structured at all I'm only assuming xander was a high rank bc he's just one of our mains. and the shot of them all walking ofc where he was front and center I can read basic filmmaking choices lol

but also hyenas have FRIENDS! they have cliques and groups within their own clan. isn't that so cool? why did they just disregard xander's friendship with the scoobies? I think the fact xander had friends and quite loyal ones is like important? I mean okay I suppose it's all he's in this clan now he's cut ties with the scoobies, but to me at least I think that's kinda boring haha. though actually even if xander had the support of the scoobies, with how that clan were already a group before xander and not with xander at all, he'd actually probably be like real goddamn low anyways instead of more equal like it was shown

look I really have no idea about any of this I've just been looking up hyena facts for the past hour bc I thought it was neat. I simply think they should've done more with this instead of oo look xander's all feral and evil when they literally chose hyena to be their animal. like ooookay then whateverrrr lame

ranking all of the season finales of btvs ! im sick let me do this

(spoilers and the two parter finales will be grouped)

prophecy girl - 8.9/10, probably one of the best episodes of season 1 and in btvs altogether, i remember especially liking it because of the journey buffy goes through in this episode, one that she will be forced to constantly return to overtime, and the sort of eerie ending that sets up season 2. it's a really good episode and finale and it's a good take down of such an iconic villain.

becoming - 9.7/10, my fucking shit. this finale is tits. first off, angelus is a fucking fabulous villain it really raises the stakes for the show so early on in its run and it sets up my favourite ship in the world spike and buffy, in addition to that this finale is INSANE. buffy reaches genuine rock bottom (atp) and after getting expelled, wanted for murder, kicked out of her house and then after killing angel she leaves town and finally quits being the slayer, something she almost did in prophecy girl. anyways it's genuinely just an explosive finale with a lot of twists and i cry when she kills angel, it's damn good.

graduation day - 8.6/10, ill have to revisit it but this finale is one of my least favourite finales if not my least favourite of btvs WHICH SOUNDS NUTS but even though i do think it's a good end because it ends the high school era by exploding the high school, and the mayor was such a good villain and faith is in a coma and angel does his iconic disappearing into the shadows okay it's a very good finale but yeah it's not my favourite. im not like eek graduation day. though i think it is a strong finale! i think it's really powerful, especially oz's line about surviving high school. idk why i don't like it

restless - 9.9/10. now. 0.01 off because it's possibly the strangest btvs finale meaning that it is atypical as they already defeated the seasons villain and technically it isn't like a good summation of what season 4 was, or necessarily a satisfying conclusion but also shut the fuck up me this is in my top 5 favourite episodes in the entire series, and i think it's a really good midway (even though it's not midway) shift for the series and it really establishes the batshit insanity of what 5-7 will be and the foreshadowing in this episode through the dreams is so fucking cool i love this episode so much. be back before dawn???? holy fuck??? and fuck what i said earlier season 4 was a bizarre fucking season and for it to have this ending is perfect because it's a really good character analysis episode for the main 4. it dives into willow's insecurities which will be more relevant going forward, xander's feelings of incompetence which will be idk something, giles' feelings about having to choose buffy and the slayer stuff over an actual personal life, buffy's longing for some kind of purpose in slaying, ok ive yapped about this long enough anyways. slay restless

the gift - 12/10, yeah this is the btvs finale of all time. this finale. OH THIS FINALE. restless is a really great episode but not a good finale. the gift is a good episode AND A GOOD FINALE. so yeah season 5 is the shit, we know this, season 5 is my favourite season (tied with s6) because it's fucking awesome, and it's really sad and buffy has great outfits and i love dawn summers and we get lots of spike and etc etc. i can't give you reasons for why the gift is such a great finale. you should know. It’s just a very epic episode that involves such an awesome fight between glory and buffy, there are stakes, buffy finally understands what the first slayer meant by death is your gift, spike tells buffy that he accepts that she'll never love him but because he knew her he has been changed for good, giles coldly suffocates ben because he knows buffy would never intentionally kill a person, it ends with buffys tombstone-- it's just so fucking powerful and beautiful and i loooooove it.

grave - 9.2/10, now, hot take. this finale is really powerful too. it ends on a bittersweet note for sure, willow isnt evil anymore but she's actively grieving on top of having to atone for what's she's done, giles has returned but for how long, spike fights for his soul back but like how the hell is he going to handle that and how is he going to start the path of atonement with buffy. but the visual alone of buffy crawling out of the grave with dawn after the season started with her clawing out of her own, with a new lease on life, a desire to live and show the world to dawn, the two of them looking at the trees, that's good shit. that's poetic. plus season 6 is my other fave season.

chosen - 7.5/10 lmao booooo. ok the score is mean this is a solid series finale and i think it's well done. but also boooooo. boooo. ok fine i like the potentials getting the power. i like the final scene when they look out at the crater of their adolescence. but like. boo. booooo. spike dying was fine i guess i cant get into that because idk ill never stop talking? anya dying was craaaaazy. she should've 1) never died or 2) if she should die, die in selfless. whatever this is a good series finale but idk season 7... there's something wrong with this finale like i love the final scene so much but this finale has something wrong with it idk what

Oooh, absolutely!

This is my personal ranking, in terms of my enjoyment of each season which is in part driven by what I think of the writing/character work/et al, but it's not necessarily the definitive word on which seasons are The Best or whatever. Also, with the exception of the Dead Last ranking for a bunch of reasons, I did enjoy every season so this is 'most favorite to least favorite but still very high up in my esteem'.

Season 2 and Season 6 are really tied for first in my head but I think 2 edges out just slightly ahead because it lays the foundations for basically the rest of the series and especially for so much of what I love about the series as a whole and Buffy in particular. Season 1 is only so low because the others hit me harder emotionally, and while I do love season 7 and don't agree with a lot of the way the broader fandom rags on it, it has 'Empty Places' and unlike the season 3 episode 'Dead Man's Party' which I have similar issues with, Empty Places doesn't occur early enough in the season for the remaining episodes to make up for it.

However, season 4 I dislike overall, despite enjoying quite a few of the episodes individually. It is the season that I think has the weakest overall writing in terms of characters as well as plot--the Initiative was an interesting idea but poorly thought out in execution, and the Big Bad was its weakest point narratively, as hilarious as I find Adam sticking three and a half inch floppies in his chest to download knowledge and skills. I read a post somewhere about how the season would have come together more coherently if Riley had been 'Adam' instead of it just being Walsh's weird cobbled-together project, and I'd have to agree, even apart from my dislike for Riley as a character (and that does feed into a lot of my antipathy towards season 4).

That said, even season 4 holds a special soft spot in my heart because there are a lot of episodes that I love individually and also it's the start of Spike's evil domesticated cat arc so I can't hate it too much. I do think that some of it, too, is the transition from BtVS being a high school show to being a college show and Buffy's own transition into young adulthood perhaps hitting closer to home than I'd care to admit, which I think is part of why I take the failed execution and now badly it did not stick the landing so personally. I wanted it to be good, and it wasn't, and now I sit with all these feelings that have nowhere to really go because there's so much that s4 could've done and been and wasn't. Idk, maybe I'll be able to articulate it better on rewatch.

kennedy was a whiny bitch, principal wood was extremely self centered and had some major mommy issues that could have ruined everything for everyone if he had killed spike, giles became such an old hag at the end, and i don’t remember the two on the bottom at all lol

also i really don’t think the inclusion of angel at the end was necessary like boy why are you JUST NOW suddenly here 😭

For rankings, I tried looking at the overall episode, the writing, character development, how interesting it is to watch and how it fits into the series as a whole, not just if I liked or disliked one particular thing about it. Obviously my heart is Spuffy-coded so I showed some bias there. But just a little, I swear!

I basically went through and gave each episode a number from 1-10 (though with a list this big I should have done 1-15, smaller groups that way!), and then took all the individual groups and ranked them again, from 1-25 or however many episodes were in that group. Some groups were so big I had to pluck out the five best and rank those, then the next five best, and all the way down the list.

This list is entirely my own opinion, it is not based on stats or a poll or how the fandom feels or anything, and if you disagree with any placements then I invite you to make your own ranking and share it with me, I'd love to see it!

For an organizer like me this was a super fun exercise to do, and this is actually my second ranking of it; the first one was directly after my first viewing of the show and I've had some changes of opinion since, haha. And I love looking back at it now and being able to say with absolute certainty which episodes are in my top 5 and which ep I hate the most.

OT3: Mh. Sterek and Steter in a "Stiles has two hands (and is Hale-catnip)" way? Which is. Very hard to come by in a non-incestuous way (no judgment. It's just. Not for me). I just generally don't multiship a lot in this fandom, it is very uniquely one where I care more about various platonic relationships than over romantic shipping

favorite storyline: oh the Nogitsune all the fucking way. s3B is the most brilliant storyline it's just devastating that it was preceded by s3A

least favorite storyline: lol s6B what the fuck was that even man I hate it so much. Shout-out to s5 for being the second worse and for s4 and s3A for sucking equally though. Only half this show is watchable and that makes me miserable because I still love it

what I wish had happened but didn’t: tHE HALE PACK SHOULD HAVE LIVED. It literally would not have fucking hurt anything at all if Derek and his pack just got to STAY AROUND. Boyd and Erica living. Jackson not leaving. Derek keeping his Alpha spark. Cora not fucking off again. I just want my Hale Pack, man

what happened that I wish hadn’t: feels like I could just rephrase what I just said to put it here too. Additionally, honestly, s6B. Like, s6A fully ended on a photo-finish moment? And then they tagged another half season of ABSOLUTE bullshit on that was aggravating and exhausting. s6A was honestly... not that bad, I mean, it was better than s5 (which is just such a low bar lol like it was very hard to get worse and inexplicably they managed to do it by making s6B), they could have ended on an okay note
