for thanksgiving, buck bakes an apple pie. he stuffs it with granny smiths and brown sugar so it’s tart and sweet. he spends thirty minutes carefully folding the lattice of the crust because his fingers are big, but he’s real gentle about it. by the end of it his knuckles are stiff as hell, but it bakes beautifully. the filling stays inside.

for thanksgiving, buck bakes two dozen key lime tarts. he shapes each individual crust, graham crackers that he beat into dust, unsalted butter that he melted over boiling water, press, shape, bake. he hand-whips the heavy cream, cherishing the ache that blooms within his shoulder blade.

for thanksgiving, buck bakes cornbread in a skillet. he burns his hand pulling the cast iron from the oven.

on thanksgiving, buck polishes off an entire bottle of merlot by himself. there’s so much of it that nobody notices. on thanksgiving, he has sore, burnt, aching hands and a belly full of wine and every single thing he baked is gone so quick, so easily, like he didn’t put all of himself into it.
