Just some notes I am making for myself!!
Isopod Shopping List:
✔️ Glass aquarium/vivarium (ensure lid has fine mesh to keep out pests; a lid that's partially glass will make it easier to maintain humidity)
Humidity gauge/thermometer (55%+ R/H, 70-85 degrees F)
Bark 'hides' and (safe) decorative pieces; cork bark is common
✔️ Squirt bottle for misting
Substrate (common ones: topsoil, coco fiber, coco chips, sand, charcoal, small pieces of bark/wood, sphagnum moss; the moss helps retain moisture and thus is handy but don't use too much; ensure the soil used has no fertilizer beads or other 'extras' in it):
✔️ Topsoil/Potting Soil
✔️ Worm castings
✔️ Fir Bark Chips
✔️ Charcoal
✔️ Sphagnum Moss
Dead leaves (primary food source; some people boil or bake them to sterilize but others don't; a variety of leaf types will work, but hardwood trees seem best; some commonly used ones include maple, oak, birch, elm, cottonwood, etc; thinner leaves and older, more 'rotten' leaves are tastiest to them, but be sure to inspect for mold or hitchhikers; provide plenty of leaves in a layer over the whole tank)
Additional dead organic matter can include seed pods such as magnolia pods, lichen, or other goodies
Nutrient-rich foods (secondary food source; a variety of things can be used including fish flakes, dried bloodworms, dried shrimp, small pieces of produce scraps, specialized products such as Repashy Morning Wood and Repashy Bug Burger, etc) to be provided in very small amounts that can be eaten quickly and any excess removed before it molds; experiment to see how long it takes for them to consume it and what they prefer to eat
Cuttlebone (broken up) may be provided if desired for extra calcium
Springtails may be added to help control mold and pests
Isopod Care Notes:
Some keepers have a 'damp' side and a 'drier' side to allow the isopods to regulate their own preferences; sphagnum moss works good for the damp side, and situate a vent by the dry side if possible
Heat should not be needed unless your room is especially cool
Most keepers prefer deep substrate for the isopods to burrow, but some prefer shallower substrate so they can keep track of their stock better (they use a compacted substrate layer and place a looser, shallower burrowing layer on top)
Substrate does not need to be changed often but every few months is a good idea to refresh its nutrients
Exact environmental preferences will depend on the species of isopod; while their needs are often very similar it's important to always double-check about your exact species
Isopods will reproduce readily (females carry the eggs in their bodies and will give 'birth' to live isopods) and the little babbies (mancae) start off very teeny so be careful when you're cleaning
Invert keepers have bred a TON of varieties of isopods, at differing 'difficulty' and price levels; make sure you are purchasing isopods that have been bred in captivity and not poached from the wild; and obviously never release pets into the wild
Some Beginner Isopods & Pretty Color Morphs:
Armadillidium nasatum (Nosy Pillbug): Peach, Orange, White Out/Pearl
Armadillidium vulgare (Roly-Poly): Orange Vigor, St. Lucia, Magic Potion ($$$)
Porcellio scaber (Rough Woodlouse): Dalmation, Orange Koi, Lava
Porcellio laevis (Swift Woodlouse): Dairy Cow
Cubaris murina (Little Sea Isopod): Anemone, Glacier
Questions for Sellers:
Opinions on enclosures, especially with regards to maintaining proper moisture and airflow
Opinions on where to safely collect leaf litter (esp this time of year), boiling to sterilize (potential nutrition loss)
Species
Where do you get your isopods?

Terrestial Isopods (Don't think I fully finished so I might update later)
 Enclosure:
Soil is the best substrate for them with a layer of dead leaves
They should have enrichment like dead leaves, corkbark, branches, or stones
They are best paired with other bigger animals/invertebrates as isopods act as a clean up crew and are good at making bioactive enclosures
Ventilation is very much needed
They need a humidity of about 55%
Temperature should be 70-85 degrees F
A day and night cycle is okay, but they much prefer darkness
Can be paired with larger invertebrates, amphibians, or reptiles and can be their clean-up crew or can be alone
About 1 gallon is enough for one colony, but if paired with other creatures then adjust to the creatures
Having 2 layers of soil substrate with one being actual substrate, then a top layer of their food then leaf litter on top of that
Diet/feeding habits:
They eat decaying matter, so their diet is going to be provided through their enclosure and substrate (detritivores)
Boiled (which disinfects) leaves are a good food source along with boiled branches and soft woods
Magnolia, live oak, and sea grape leaves are all good food sources
Nutritional food such as repashy bug burger, animal waste, repashy morning wood, calcium powder, etc.
Only offer a pencil eraser portion of food as uneaten food will attract nats or other annoying things. Offer food then wait 1-2 days before giving more.
Don’t feed fish flakes, dog food, rice, or cereal
Age identification:
There is absolutely no way to know when they reach maturity or to document age. Don’t bother.
Physical traits:
There are 5,000+ species and morphs, but only about 100 are in the pet trade
They breathe through gills
They are incredibly small invertebrates
Moving slower = more comfortable and good conditions
Their rate on travel depends on temperature, humidity, light, and the tightness of their area
The faster they move the less comfortable they are
Personality:
They huddle together, cross paths with other isopods, and move slow when happy and comfortable
Health concerns:
Never handle.
Dehydration or improper humidity can lead to death
Handling:
Too small to handle, never do it. Just move their substrate from one place to another if cleaning is needed

I've been noticing more and more isopods in my enclosures and it makes me very happy. Especially the zebras, who are the only ones to mostly congregate on top of their bark, which might have to do with having a solid color lid/ even less light than the others during the day. The zebras aren't on top of the bark in the video because I added food before taking the video, so they fled from the light and clustered under the wood.
The dairy cows have been very hungry for the big burger powder, calcium powder, and of course the dried shrimps they get fed. They eat bug burger faster than any other colony, the powder oranges take about 48 hours to finish the same amount of powder the dairy cows finished in about 8-10 hours.
The dairy cows of course consume leaves and carrots, but they definitely seem to prefer protein rich foods. And are voraciously hungry haha.

How would one get into keeping isopods, and how would one keep them in an enclosure?
What a great question!
Let's start with acquiring a culture/colony of isopods.
You can get them most places. Under logs, stones, flower pots even. Most of these are going to be your basic Armadillidium. If you harvest from the wild, you'll want to try and replicate the environment you found them in (think: is it damp? Soil type--sandy, loamy, etc)
If you don't want to harvest from the wild there are other means. You can order cultures online or find them at reptile expos/conventions. These will provide you with morphological options and with those options you'll need to research their best care. For example desert canyons are more drought tolerant.
Choose any species or morph you'd like! I'd steer clear of expensive morphs until you feel confident in your isopod keeping experience, though.
So you've chosen your isopod, now how does one make the enclosure?
I keep mine in handy Tupperware (plastic containers). I like see through ones so I can keep an eye on soil moisture.
Tumblr media
Something like this does just fine. Poke or drill some air holes if you don't plan on opening the lid often, so the airflow keeps mold from forming (alternatively adding a culture of springtails will help manage fungi and mold).
Here's my setup for my desert canyons:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In here I have soil with NO fertilizers (specifically topsoil. It's like 2 bucks a bag at Lowes/home depot/Ace), cocofiber (helps keep moisture up, you can find it in the reptile section of petstores), and sphagnum moss (garden center lowes/HD, $6 in my area). With some sticks for chewing on. It's a bit of a bigger container because I want to grow a big colony so I can put some in bioactive reptile enclosures. Some people will mix sand into it too but I haven't found a need for it.
I digress.
Some people go fancier and put them in lovely glass terrariums and put plants in too and that's fine. I keep them in plastic containers because it's cheaper, takes up less space, and holds moisture in better (terrariums tend to have mesh tops, but you can find glass tops too).
They won't really escape if you keep the dirt and decor away from the lid. If you poke holes in the container I'd make them close to the top. Like this (my dubia roach container).
Tumblr media
Soil moisture??
Yes! Isopods breath through gills and require humid conditions. Some species are more tolerant to drier conditions, but they'll still need some water! Deeper substrate prevents fast evaporation, keeping the enclosure humid longer.
And speaking of water, because of their gilled anatomy they don't really need a water bowl. If you provide one, and the enclosure gets too dry, they'll get in the water dish and drown. If you happen to house them with animals (like reptiles!) that require a water bowl, I recommend putting a rock in it so they can get out safely.
Ok I've got my enclosure and I've got my isopods, so now what do I feed them?
Isopods are detritivores. Meaning they eat decaying organic material. So, yeah, they'll munch on those twigs you threw in there, but it's also good to throw in the occasional slice of vegetable.
They also like anything rich in calcium and keratin. So things like freeze dried shrimp (fish food), the occasional piece or two of dog kibble to make sure a balance of nutrients are available to them, etc. Just be careful with fish food and kibble, these have grains that could attract grain mites. (They're harmless, but still annoying) I only feed a tiny bit and very occasionally.
Some isopod owners even go out of their way to buy Repashy Bug Burger for their 'pods. It's kind of pricey though, compared to offering them food scraps and the like.
--
Aaaaand I think that's it? It's a lot of information, but ultimately their care is easy and they don't take up a lot of space! Watching them crawl around is pretty cool too :)
I may do a small video version of this since it's a long infodump of a post ^^;

Why I love my isopods:
1. They're cute AF
2. They're active, I always see them roaming the floor and the wood and the leaves of the plants
3. Low maintenance, I spray their tank down once or twice a day to keep humidity up, their lights are on a 9 hour cycle, they get fed once or twice a week
4. Their diet is pretty easy, they get potatoes, carrots, and bell peppers. When I'm having an off week they're also ok with just getting some repashy bug burger. Also cuttlebone for calcium!
5. Their tank is bioactive, so I don't do much cleaning except for removal of uneaten food
6. Their tank is small enough it can sit on my desk, so I can watch them when I should be paying attention to my online lectures
The only con I have, is my struggle to find plants happy to live with them. The fittonia and baby tears wilted hardcore, but the spider plant is happy. I'm trying medium light plants this time around

So! I got new (ish) enclosures? The top one is older but idk if I updated y’all so here we go.
Top is Porcellio hoffmanseggi; bottom left is Porcellio laevis; bottom right is Armadilidium maculatum.
Hoffmanseggi isopods are in a 12x12x12 Exo Terra, while the dairy cows and zebras are each in a 6 quart sterilite container. I spent the day poking holes in the sides and top with a hot nail.
The hoffmanseggi isopods are doing really well, breeding a lot with no deaths that I’ve seen so I didn’t want to mess around too much with their enclosure, plus I only had two bins. There’s so many springtail eggs in the moist half of their enclosure. Im feeding them mainly bug burger. I think I need to add a few more leaves? Maybe I’ll do that in the morning. There’s some leaf litter mixed into the substrate.
The dairy cows were doing okay, haven’t seen any mancae in a while so I might see about introducing another culture. They were in a 2.5 gal aquarium, but there was a lot of wasted space as it’s about the same footprint as the 6 quart tub, just taller. Found probably 20-30 isopods when switching them over.
My zebras have not been thriving at all. I had them in an 8x8x8 Exo Terra, and even though I’ve seen them breeding there hasn’t been any mancae. Moved them out of the Exo Terra into a cricket keeper for a couple days, then moved them into the 6 quart tub.
Hopefully moving the dairy cows and the zebras help them a bit, I shuffled around the substrate and added more leaves, cork, and bug burger. There’s more aeration than before, and it’s a lot easier to create a humidity gradient in the tubs. Plus it looks neater rather than a 12x12x12, an 8x8x8, and a 2.5. And now I can use the 8x8x8 and/or the 2.5 gal for raising more tadpoles in the future hopefully. We’ll see.
