Some of my Yellow Cherokee Wax BUSH beans have decided to become POLE beans instead and start climbing up structures.
I didn't know that bush beans were capable of this kind of rebellion.

In the garden this morning:
Bee taking a break from collecting cosmos pollen for a quick wash.
Potted red biquinho peppers are almost ripe enough for a tasting. The seed packet came with both red and yellow varieties, but I found that the red struggled a lot more with both germination and surviving to adult planthood. I have three reds surviving to produce and I used all the seed in the packet to get them. In contrast, I have 8 yellows and enough seed for next year. If I like the flavor, I'm going to be saving every single red seed these plants produce.
Ginger is doing well. I like the contrast with the surrounding nasturtium so I'll probably repeat that combination next year. Had some issues with opossums digging into the one side, which is still recovering from the damage.
And speaking of damage, here's what june bugs are doing to my beans. I've just found my racquetball racket though and I'm intending to have some fun hitting them into next week (or at least into my non-gardening neighbors' yards).
I also saw my very first two cucumber beetles this morning hanging out in the zucchini flowers. They love to use the flowers for shelters and orgies, so it's a good place to monitor for them (and kill them by pinching the blossom shut, plucking it, and turning it into a smear on the pavement). They were in the back and my baby cucumber plants are in the front so my strategy of delaying planting may still work. Next year I'm starting the cucumber seed indoors for transplanting though - the plants are tiny and I'm still not going to get many cucumbers from them, just this time because of a too short season. This is what gardening is though. A lot of trial and error and adjusting to circumstances.
In good news, the cuttings I took from a mostly dead zebrina plant a week or two ago rooted in water and about 20 have been planted in soil in this pot. So it looks like I've ended up with a new houseplant after all.

Our 2023 garden: morning harvest and how things are looking
I didn’t pick any bush beans for a couple of days, so there was plenty to pick this morning!
I also grabbed a few Gold Ball turnips, Uzbek Golden carrots – a first harvest of those – and snagged a yellow zucchini. There’s some green ones starting to grow, and one that is almost ready to harvest, but not quite!
I uploaded other photos onto Instagram. As you go through these, can you please let…

White US Americans, what’s the most innocuous but embarrassing White US American thing you’ve done lately? Mine was buying 10 cans of black beans because they were on sale, fully planning to eat them like a normal person eats black beans, but instead I dumped tomato paste and maple syrup and molasses and paprika in there so I could mimic baked beans and eat them with hot dogs.

The cosmos are now blooming en masse. Got a nice mix of orange and yellow.
Perennial sweet pea vine also blooming. So pretty and surprisingly very attractive to bees and wasps.
Baby bush beans! I've got two kinds tucked all over the garden. Luckily they have different colored flowers because I did not mark them and one of them is meant to be harvested early as a French filet. Pole beans are still concentrating on growing tall.
And finally a handful of Shishito peppers ready for harvest. I'll wait a bit more until I have enough for a snack. They taste just as good red as green so no worries about waiting too long.

Our 2023 garden: morning harvest, and the squash patch
I got a harvest this morning!
Just a wee one, but big enough that I didn’t have room in my pocket for the patty pan. I’m going to have to start bringing out my harvest colander, just in case!
Also, it is SO much more comfortable to harvest bush beans in a high raised bed. Even in the low raised bed we grew some in last year, while much better than harvesting at ground level, it was still…

Hoody Hans headcannons?
Yes of course, my good friend Hands.
I know the wiki says everyone in the Rubber Fishes is goofy and incompetent except for Sunny, but I like to think that he’s pretty competent. It’s just that Sunny is the only one who's serious about her work. Hans moreso just isn’t interested in what the crew does most of the time. He’s bored by how Horace seems to only want to pick fights with the Laughingstocks these days and wishes they were doing more adventurous stuff.
He’s friends with Sunny because they’re the most chill people on the crew.
Likes to go out on long fishing trips by himself because everyone else gets on his nerves.
He likes to fish by swatting the surface of the water and skewering fish on his hooks. Kind of like how a bear fishes!
His hooks are actually more like sickles. They come in handy when he forages.
He moves around in uncanny ways that make it seem as though his body isn’t like a human’s. Like for example, it looks kind of like he glides around instead of walks. He can also contort himself in weird ways.
I was exploring DeviantArt and I found the original first drawing of the Rubber Fishes, by the person who created them, and the description said that he joined the crew because he committed some mysterious crime and is trying to evade the authorities, and yeah, that sounds about right.
I kind of like the mystery surrounding him, so I don’t want to try to overexplain what he is or what his backstory is, but judging by how bugs crawl out of his sleeves, I think he’s either a bug-infested zombie or a human-shaped bug colony hivemind (like Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Chistmas). Or possibly some unheard-of Abyssian creature.
ACTUALLY this is what he looks like under the hood:
