Today I’m thinking about Kayleigh Day.
Fighting for her sport, in the beginning. Her, as a female co-founder, travelling the world as a representative of Exy. I’m picturing her standing in front of all-male boards and councils selling the sport, selling her life’s work, a young woman in an underrepresented field, desperate for her passion project to be picked up, to be respected. Do you think she had to sit in front of Olympic Councils with Tetsuji by her side and beg for the sport to be including in the Olympics? While men sat there and asked her, why does this sport work, do you think she had to put on a brave face and ask them to watch one game, to see what it was all about? Do you think she had spreadsheets and documents and presentations of how having a mixed gender sport worked, of proof that the sport had taken off already in Ireland and Japan?
Can you imagine her, unknowingly birthing the Raven mentality as she spent night after night awake until all hours on phone calls with a time difference, a cup of coffee to one side, and the first prototype of an Exy racquet to the other? When she wasn’t talking business, she was probably touring the country, offering free equipment to schools that were willing to trial the sport, offering coaching support to anyone who was willing to ask for it.
Kayleigh Day, sleepless and running on caffeine and years of work, receiving the phone call that the Olympics had decided to give Exy a shot. Then a call with Russia, with Germany, with Australia and China, as more and more people joined their little team, more and more schools and colleges and local sports clubs picking up the sport. Suddenly she’s in Barcelona, watching a game, hearing calls being shouted in Spanish, calls that she’d first came up with on her bedroom floor with Tetsuji on the other line. She’s in Japan, maybe she’s made it to the Olympics, the first ever Irish National team playing against the first ever Japanese National team. She can’t help but feel a tug in her chest watching fans in the crowd invest themselves into the game, upset at a loss, ecstatic at a win. She’s standing back and watching her life’s work FINALLY pay off. She’s finally getting to see what it was all for. But it doesn’t last long, does it?

SINGER NIALL HORAN INVESTS IN FENWAY SPORTS, MCILROY TGL TEAM
Tumblr media
Singer-songwriter Niall Horan will tee it up as the latest investor in TGL, the tech-infused team golf league backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Horan, who first gained fame as a member of boy band One Direction, invested in Boston Common Golf through his investment vehicle Greenbridge Ventures.
Boston Common Golf is one of the six inaugural TGL teams and owned by Fenway Sports Group and McIlroy’s investment firm, Symphony Ventures.
McIlroy and Horan both hail from Ireland and have been longtime friends. “Golf has been a lifelong passion of mine,” Horan said in a statement. “Being able to combine my love for the game and my friendship with Rory into a relationship that helps launch a new concept in golf is truly special.”
TGL teams will each feature four golfers hitting shots into a golf simulator screen until they are within 50 yards of the hole and the action transfers to a short game area that transforms between holes. The season includes 15 matches, plus playoffs.
Horan will also serve as an ambassador for Boston Common Golf, which will benefit from his massive social media following, which includes 72 million combined followers on Instagram and Twitter—Woods has 10 million and McIlroy 6 million.
In 2015, Horan launched a sports agency focused on golf, Modest! Golf Management, with his business partner, Mark McDonnell. Their clients include Tyrrell Hatton, who has won six European Tour events and one on the PGA Tour. That same year, Horan served as McIlroy’s caddie in the Masters’ annual Par 3 Contest.
In addition to his singing career, Horan was a coach the past year on The Voice and coached the winner in back-to-back seasons. He is currently on the North American leg of his global tour.
TGL was slated to start play this January, but delayed its inaugural season to begin Jan. 7, 2025 after a power failure caused the dome of the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens to deflate. The required repairs led the TGL to delay a year. Last month, Horan visited TGL’s performance lab to preview the technology that will be used in the competition.
The SoFi Center will boast a 3,000-square-foot simulator screen and a 22,475-square-foot customizable short game area. TGL rules also include a shot clock, and the league plans for players to be mic’d up during the action. A seating area for 1,500 has been designed around the playing zone.
Matches will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+.
The six, location-tied teams for TGL’s inaugural season: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston, Jupiter Links GC, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club and the Bay Golf Club, have attracted heavy hitters in the sports space, including Arthur Blank, Steve Cohen, Alexis Ohanian and Marc Lasry, as well as athletes Serena Williams, Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Woods partnered with David Blitzer for the Jupiter franchise.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Double winning team pose for a photo together with their trophies, 1961.
Back row, left to right: Bill Brown, Peter Baker, Ron Henry, Danny Blanchflower, Maurice Norman, Dave Mackay.
Front row, left to right: Cliff Jones, John White, Bobby Smith, Les Allen, Terry Dyson.
Bill Brown: Signed in the summer of ‘59. Proper keeper, is talked about in the same breath as keepers like Clemence, Jennings, and Lloris. Steadfast in this side.
Peter Baker: Born in Hampstead, he played for Enfield before coming to Spurs in ‘52. Played one game short of 300 and scored 3 goals as a right back. Got the job done and never let himself get ruffled by any winger; he’d love watching modern fullbacks nowadays.
Ron Henry: Only ever played for Spurs on the senior level, signing in ‘52. Fast and a good tackler, sound left back. He had a plant nursery and homing pigeons, and he stayed on with Spurs as a coach for the U18s.
Danny Blanchflower: Irresistible, incredible, incomparable. There will never be another like Danny. Signing from Villa in ‘54 and going on to head Northern Ireland, he was the captain of Spurs’ Double winning side and made this great team extraordinary. He had very progressive ideas of how the game should be played, fast and attacking and being allowed to use a ball during training, and was set on the idea that the glory—doing things in style—is what is special about the game. No one like him.
Maurice Norman: Signing in the winter of ‘55, he was an absolute assured and commanding figure at the back. Scored 19 goals over his 400+ appearances for Spurs; should’ve been a mainstay at centre half for England but unfortunately his career was cut short due to a double fracture in his tibia and fibula. Integral to the success of this side.
Dave Mackay: If the word legend had a picture accompanying its definition in the dictionary, surely Mackay’s face would be smiling back up at you. Coming from Hearts in the spring of ‘59, he is still described to this day as possibly the most complete midfield player Scotland has ever produced. He never gave up playing even when the rest of the team believed they had already won. A player who inspired everyone around him, others spoke of him as the ‘hardest man I have ever played against—and certainly the bravest.’ He was known famously as the heartbeat of Bill Nic’s Double winning side. Ange Postecoglou and Son Heungmin would have loved him.
Cliff Jones: Formerly Spurs’ top fifth goalscorer before Sonny overtook him, the Welshman signed for the club in the early spring of ‘58 from Swansea. He was a crucial player in the side who played on both wings, was faster than you could believe, always put a lovely cross in, and scored goals from flying headers. Still has lovely words to say about the club and his grandson, Matt Wells, is currently a first team assistant coach.
John White: Nicknamed ‘The Ghost’ due to his runs to find space off the ball that saw him arrive unexpectedly in the opposition’s penalty box, he was one of the most skilful players to ever don the shirt. Signed in the autumn of ‘59. His name bleeds into Spurs folklore as he was being primed to be the next Blanchflower but tragically passed away prematurely when struck by lightning while playing golf in ‘64. His teammates say about him: ‘While other players were someone you would have to bring into a game, John would bring himself into the game.’
Bobby Smith: For the days of centre forwards like him! Currently Spurs’ third top goalscorer, he joined from Chelsea in the winter of ‘55, clearly having recognised which the superior London club was. Twelve hat tricks over his career with Spurs, he was big and bustling and scored goals like nobody’s business. He scored 33 goals in 43 games in the Double-winning season—not too shabby.
Les Allen: Joining the club in the winter of ‘59, he immediately struck up a brilliant and lethal striking partnership with Smith, scoring 27 goals that Double-winning season. While living in Smith’s shadow a little and struggling to retain his place in the starting XI with the arrival of Jimmy Greaves, he was still an essential part of this side’s success. His son Clive Allen and his nephew Paul Allen both went on to play for Spurs.
Terry Dyson: A player who would nowadays be dismissed by talent scouts due to his height and is often not remembered in this side, but was the catalyst to Spurs’ success that season. He signed for the club in ‘55. A snappy winger who could put in a good cross, he is the only Spurs player to score a hat trick in the North London Derby to date. You can still find him trawling around academy matches.

Ireland - Day 4
Today took me out of the city for the first time, as I’d booked a coach trip, so I got up a little earlier to give me plenty of time to reach the pickup point. The day dawned cloudy and cool again, and unlike yesterday it generally stayed that way.
I met up with the rest of the tour group outside the euphemistically-named Ned Kelly Sports Club (actually a casino, as far as I could tell) to wait for the coach, which arrived to pick us up right on time. On board we were greeted by the tour guide, who clearly runs her tour business herself rather than via an agent as she was who I booked with directly over email. She is, usefully for a tour guide, significantly better at talking than she is at typing, as she spent the entire drive from central Dublin to the Hill of Tara filling us in on all the relevant background of Irish history and prehistory, from the very first Stone Age settlers all the way forwards through the Bronze and Iron Age Celts, the golden age of monastic settlement after the fall of Rome, the arrival and settlement of the Vikings, the Anglo-Norman invasion, the Great Famine and the mass emigration that followed, the struggle for independence and the economic boom of more recent decades, and all the stuff in between. Most of this probably wasn’t strictly necessary for understanding the context of the day’s largely Neolithic sites, but it was still interesting. The Battle of the Boyne also came up in passing – as our guide put it, ‘a Scot and a Dutchman fighting in Ireland over the throne of England’ – but mainly because the drive took us past the battlefield site.
As mentioned, the first stop on the tour was the Hill of Tara, capital of the ancient kings of Ireland. The site covers a pretty huge area and we only had about an hour there so I didn’t have time to explore it in detail, but I was still able to look around the old burial cairn called the Mound of the Hostages and see the ancient henge-like earthworks around the Lia Fáil, the Stone of Destiny (not our one, a different one) at the highest point of the site. It was a breezy day and I almost lost my hat before I tightened the chin-strap, but I got a great view out over the surrounding countryside including an old tower on a distant hilltop that our guide said was the remnant of St Columba’s pre-Iona monastery.
We got back in the coach and drove a little further to the Brú na Bóinne (‘Palace of the Boyne’) visitor centre, the access point for the famous passage graves of the area. The visitor centre houses a good exhibition about the Neolithic history of the sites as well as the later excavations, and also has a gift shop and cafe where we stopped for lunch before walking over the bridge across the Boyne and boarding the little shuttle bus to Knowth. This site isn’t quite as famous as Newgrange, but I thought it was even more impressive. It consists of one huge central burial mound, completely surrounded by richly-carved boulders and with two passages in from opposite sides of the hill, both ending in burial chambers without actually meeting in the middle. The Great Mound only makes up part of what must have been a high-status cemetery, as it sits among many similar but smaller burial mounds, some complete and others with their burial chambers open to the sky. The site reminded me a lot of Maeshowe and the other Neolithic cairns of Orkney, and when I brought this up to the guide (a different guide to the tour operator, in the employ of the visitor centre) she agreed that it was probably much the same culture, with a lot of similarities both in the structure of the cairns and the abstract, geometric style of the carvings.
We also got caught in a brief but heavy and almost horizontal shower of rain, but were able to dry off a little watching a short film about the excavations at Knowth before we moved on to Newgrange.
Unlike Knowth, the mound at Newgrange stands alone, surrounded by similar but mostly uncarved kerbstones and, a little further out, a ring of standing stones. Also unlike Knowth, which was reused as the base of a hillfort in the mediaeval period, Newgrange survived largely intact since the Stone Age, possibly due to its local rep as a fairy mound scaring people away from raiding it for building materials. The Fair Folk did not, however, scare off the archaeologists, and later excavations uncovered the entrance stone – a huge boulder carved as elaborately as any at Knowth with its famous triskele designs – and the entrance itself. The white stones that face the tomb today are a modern reconstruction – the stones were found at the site, but whether they made up a facade back in the Neolithic is anyone’s guess – but the long, low and narrow passage and the cruciform chamber at the heart of the mound are almost untouched from their original status, and that ‘almost’ is only there to cover a few extra braces and the addition of electric lights.
The ancient burial chamber is tall enough to stand up in, but pretty cramped area-wise, so we split into two smaller groups to file down the entrance passage. I know people were a bit shorter back in the Neolithic, but I think even they would have found it a tight squeeze; there were a couple of points where I had to stoop and twist sideways to get through before reaching the chamber. Once inside, three alcoves opposite the entrance and to either side hold more carvings and basin-line stones whose purpose we can only guess at. The chamber is cool, utterly silent save for the visitors’ breathing, and pitch-dark with the lights off except for once a year at sunrise on the winter solstice, when the passage admits one narrow shaft of light to illuminate the chamber floor. The actual solar alignment is only accessible via an annual lottery, but a lamp in the passage provides a reasonable simulation.
I’m not one to believe in the Otherworld, but after the chamber at Newgrange, I can see how people could feel close to the gods down there.
We headed back to the visitor centre, where I bought some postcards and my usual pin badge, t-shirt and fridge magnet in the gift shop (the dark powers of the Sidhe are no match for the lure of the gift shop) and got back on the coach to Dublin. I bought some stamps in the General Post Office on O’Connell Street – I actually hadn’t realised it was still a working post office, having assumed it had been converted into a museum to the Easter Rising – and returned to the hotel to write up my postcards before venturing back out for something to eat. Tonight’s choice was a little pizzeria I’d spotted called Wallace’s Taverna, which served a good margherita a lot like the recipe they use at Matto in Edinburgh with a hazelnut mousse in a crisp chocolate shell for afterwards.

The Beatles as very specific types of Irish secondary school teacher
1. This John Lennon teaches metalwork/woodwork and like civics. Only he never actually teaches cause he cant be arsed. He’s one of the “lads”, coaches the GAA team and is generally described as being “sound”. Great for a free class cause he’ll stick on a film and doesn’t give two shits whose on their phone. GOSSIPS LIKE HIS LIFE DEPENDS ON IT, fr tho he knows eveyones business and is not above blackmail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This John Lennon however, teaches Religion or Politics/Society and History. He is a nut and very few of his students actually get along with him. Has been known to cause panic attacks as a result of his CONSTANT yapping about nuclear war and how it could break out at any moment. (this is based of personal experience)
Tumblr media
2. Any and all eras of Paul McCartney teach music and english. He is everyone’s favorite music teacher and everyone’s least favorite english teacher. I will not elaborate why. (its cause he only teaches the poetry unit, he thinks its the most musical) He is head of the music department but reluctantly so. The older students love him cause he’s a good laugh once you get to know him.
3. George is the overworked and long suffering art teacher who helps out in the music department and with the school musical every year. He has a degree in Religious Studies as well but…Catholic Ireland. He also helps with various clubs, Ally Club, Games Club, shit like that. As long as their not sports related. Will skip class to smoke in his car and did in fact get high on a school trip to Barcelona. Has a literal posse of students that he lets get away with murder. Is of no help to anyone 90% of the time. He’s real fit and the girls and the gays love him a bit too much. NO ONE knows how old he is.
4. Ringo is one of those teachers that seemingly only teaches doss subjects (religion, SPHE/CSPE, digital etc.) but is one of the smartest people in the room at any given time. He also helps with Carrer Guidance and the guidance department in general. Is “very sound” and knows ALL of the older students. Like John he knows all the gossip but he thinks blackmail is wrong and that John is a bit of a dick for stooping that low. Always just hanging around George’s classroom. There’s a bet going as to whether or not they’re together.

The world that harmed us
If you’d told him two weeks ago that he would be seriously discussing leaving the dimension with four used-to-be-strangers in a Kings Dominion he would have slowly backed up and thought you a drug addict.
But here he was, sitting at a picnic table in the shade away from the hustle and bustle of the amusement park, staring at the poke ball on the table as if it could change his life.
For years he tried to gain his father’s approval, to earn a place in his heart. And for years he failed, always compared to his siblings. Never the first like Dick, never the most loved like Jason, never the smartest like Tim, never never never.
He can’t remember when he gave up. Maybe it was after his birthday was forgotten the fifth time. Maybe when he was ignored for days at a time. Or maybe it was the first, and last, time Bruce told him he hated him.
Regardless of when, it didn’t take much for him to pack a bag and leave. It was hilariously easy, actually. You’d think someone would have noticed, but that just showed how little he meant to them. And a part of him was grateful.
In two days time he was out of New Jersey and halfway through Michigan. It was there that he met a rag tag group of metas his age also trying to leave the country.
Danny Fenton, Dove Elopeman, Noel Lok and Lydia Lippet had each been traveling–running away–alone before stumbling into each other and deciding to stick together. The four hoped Canada would be kinder to them as Dove was from Italy, Lydia Ireland, Noel California and Danny Illinois. Damian was then told of their “tragic backstory’s” as Lydia called it, and then had to share his own.
Dove was an orphan street rat who discovered she could control peoples minds after accidentally taking control of a soup kitchen. A few restaurants and a Kardashian later she was blacklisted by the Justice League who thought she was an up-and-coming supervillain and she’s been on the run ever since. Damian could tell she was hiding something, but it wasn’t his business so he said nothing.
Lydia was born with a very odd power—aspects of her life could be controlled like a game of DnD, all that was needed was a twenty-sided dice. If she rolled a twenty on intelligence, she would suddenly know enough about quantum physics to teach a college lecture. If she rolled a one she would forgot what colors were what. She also had a character sheet which affected rolls, and classed herself as a Bard.
She called the reason she ran away “The Crush™ Grape Soda Incident” and no one wanted to know what that meant.
Noel, also an orphan, used to be Californias weightlifting state champion before she was given an experimental steroid by her coach without her knowing. She didn’t realize she was a meta until she lifted her coaches beach house on, what was at the time, a funny joke. Her coach was arrested and the Justice League wanted to recruit her. Noel told them no, and when they kept trying she packed what she had and ran.
Danny’s parents were scientists who were desperate to prove ghosts were real. When their portal into the ‘Ghost Zone’ kept failing, they came to believe that the problem was they didn’t have a strong enough tie to this world to keep the portal open and stable. They decided to use Danny as that tie. This led to them turning on the portal with Danny inside, which led to Danny becoming ‘half’ ghost. When his parents tried to capture and experiment on him, he used his new ability’s and ran away.
All of that led to them putting their various abilities and life skills together to cross the Canadian border, meeting Damian a few days before they reached the border. After telling their stories and hearing his–and a high-speed boat-chase across Lake Michigan with the local police that he knows they’ll never let him live down–they continue their journey with odd but little interruptions.
When they finally crossed into Ontario it was close to three in the morning. They were all tense, each of them expecting someone they knew to jump out and drag them back. But no one did. And when they finally, finally, drove all they way through, they stopped in a forest and sat there in silence.
It was Noel who started laughing first. Him and Dove shared glances and wondered if she was ok mentally when Danny started laughing too. Then Lydia, Dove and he joined in. There was something freeing, something joyous in the air. They were out. They made it.
They fell asleep in a pile, and when they woke up they started driving again. (Lydia kept fighting him for ‘her turn’ to drive even though she admitted she didn’t know how to, as if Danny’s driving wasn’t bad enough)
They all agreed Ontario probably wasn’t safe enough so they kept going until they reached Nunavut. And then they celebrated their newfound freedom with a trip to an amusement park, a place neither of them have been before.
Damian won seven toss games and twelve stuffed animals bigger than him, Noel broke four test your strength games and won about ten thousand tickets, they used said tickets to but about fifty small toys and trinkets, Danny dragged all of them to every roller coaster and ride there was, Dove and Lydia got into a dance battle on a DDR that resulted in an all-out musical war(Lydia won) and they finished their day by buying half the candy store.
They’re food and prizes sat in the middle of the table for them to share as they giggled and joked in ways only sugar-high teens could. Danny and Lydia were in a thumb-war while Noel was messing with a puzzle. Dove was teaching him the pocky game and doing a really bad job at explaining, which was making him incredibly flustered.
However, in the middle of her explanation she fell silent. She looked at him as if she were seeing his soul, and then turned and looked at the others. Lydia cheered as she won and began tickling Danny, but shrieked as Noel began tickling her from behind. She watched before smiling and pulling something out of her bag and setting it in the middle of the pile.
It was…. a Poké ball?
It didn’t look like the other real-life poke balls he’d seen though. While those were bright plastic and bigger that his hand this one was metal and shiny, and was about the size of a tennis ball. The middle button also seemed to be slightly glowing.
“This is a portal to another dimension where Pokémon are real.” Dove said quickly, and everyone went quiet. “I know I sound insane, and I know you probably don’t believe me, but I know for a fact because I’ve been. I’ve seen it. In the world this takes you to Pokémon are real. And I think I know a way for the Justice League, the police, are parents too never find us again.”
They all stared at her for a minute, absorbing what she said. “Are you shitting us?” Lydia asked first, “Are you absolutely, one-hundred percent serious?” Dove nodded softly, biting her lip.
Damian surprised himself with his words. “Then what are we waiting for? Let’s get out of here.” Dove stared at him wide-eyed before Noel nodded. “Yeah, it’s not like I’ve got anything left here. Anyone got a reason they want to stay in boring-land and not become Pokémon trainers?”
Danny and Dove thought for a second while Lydia began listing all the Pokémon she wanted. They came up empty, and Dove began laughing. Damian asked if she was ok and she smiled at him. “I just thought you guys wouldn’t want to leave. I’ve been thinking about it the moment I found it.”
They discussed it a little more–names, Pokémon, money–before packing all their stuff and getting ready to leave the dimension.
“Hey, do you guys wanna be cheesy?” Danny asked, and put his hand on the poke ball. Noel snorted and put her hand over his. Lydia gasped and said “We could be even CHEESIER!” and put a peace sign over their hands.
He didn’t get it, but the others did. Danny and Noel made peace signs next to hers and he groaned. He got it, and Dove did too, giggling and putting her peace sign. Damian looked at their grinning faces, thought of his father—if he was missing him, if he regretted not loving him, if he even noticed that he was gone.
Fuck him, he thought, and finished the star. His friends cheered, Dove used her thumb to click the button—
and the poke ball opened, and they were sucked in.
When he came too he saw they were still making a star, but they were standing in a clearing a little ways away from a forest. They began looking around, and were dazzled by their surroundings.
Small little fairy’s with flowers–“Floettes!” Lydia cried–were everywhere, some were bigger with bigger flowers and in the distance there were about three giant ones that looked to have flowers for their heads. Small little orange hexagon-shaped bees buzzed around, and giant butterflies with big, magenta eyes flew about above them.
This, he thought, this is far better than being Robin. And as he ran with his new friends through the clearing, heading towards the city about the tree line, he knew he would never think about Gotham ever again.
~~~~~
this is just something I’ve had rolling around in my head on tumble dry for the past few days, and it’s not as useless as I thought it would be! It actually helped me flesh out backstory’s for the three original girls here. Descriptions under! Thanks for reading, and tell me what you think! And if–on the very unlikely chance–anyone who writes wants to write a story like this, please be my guest! Take it! You can do it, I believe in you!
Dove—Italian with honey skin and black curly hair that reaches below her shoulders. Her eyes are purple and glow a little when using her powers. A pastel goth, usually wearing skirts and knee high socks and heels-usually always thrifted or handmade
Lydia—African American with an Irish accent. Golden eyes and bright blue hair styled in a side-parted curly bob. Tomboyish with ripped jeans and a jean jacket, worn boots and shirt with memes on it
Noel—Native American with long and wild bright pink hair. Bright blue eyes and MEGA muscles. Usually wears dark jeans and her weightlifting varsity jacket-white sleeves, purple body, and teal accents on the cuffs and bottom and running shoes
idk if you still want uk tips, but here they are if you do:
people will be weird and/or excited about your accent, especially people who live near you
brits love a budget german supermarket, lidl and aldi have a lot of fans in the cost of living crisis
gp visits are a nightmare, and if you're moving from another country there will be LOADS of paperwork, but you should get signed up with a surgery ASAP - also, you can go to the pharmacy for a lot of stuff
queue culture - we love standing in lines
if you don't like tea, don't bother (lots of us don't) but it's a pretty big cultural thing so give it a go (we're such a nation of tea drinkers that the national grid [electricity] has to compensate for the number of kettles we use daily
wear whatever you like - nobody really cares
if you drive, you'll need to retake the test for UK roads
greggs is the iconic lunchtime place for mid tier pastries (sweet and savoury) and lunches
also, pie in the UK is typically savoury, filled with meat and/or veg and gravy
meal deals - a sandwich, crisps/chocolate/another snack, and a drink - are absolutely everywhere and an incredibly common lunch
we love double carbs - chip butty anyone?
fish fingers are such a good food that i don't think americans have? baked beans are nice but you can add spices/flavourings to them
you don't have to like marmite - if you try it, ONLY HAVE A SMALL AMOUNT. any american who puts a full spoon of marmite in their mouth is basically unknowingly undertaking the british cinnamon challenge
basically everywhere has a chippy (fish and chip shop), at least one curry place (thanks, colonisation(!)), and a chinese. curry's almost always good, chippies can vary, and be VERY careful with the chinese, because they're iconic for food poisoning (although absolutely delicious as well)
all restaurants have a food hygiene rating on the front door - 3 or less is questionable
find out if you qualify for any travelcards and get familiar with your local public transport - buses are often late, coaches are typically on time, trains often don't come at all
seriously. don't take the train if you can POSSIBLY help it - it's BONKERS expensive and often cancelled and replaced with a coach
know a bit about uk geography, if poss - lots of usamericans don't seem to know what wales is, or how north and republic of ireland are different
main tv networks are channel 4, itv, sky, and the bbc. c4 & itv are free with ads, sky requires a subscription, and the bbc is free but can only be watched by households with a tv licence (if using iplayer, the bbc's website, you can just lie about this, but there's a whole debate about whether they can/will catch you - look up tv detector vans)
british people end their texts with 'x'. it is NOT FLIRTING, we literally do it to everyone and often you'll get two or three - it's basically a punctuation mark. don't look into it
york specifically is like the north ? with emphasis on the question mark. england has a lot of perceived cultural differences between the north and the south, with the south stereotypically richer, ruder, entitled, busy, unfriendly, and the north stereotypically more rural, insular, prejudiced, and working class. it's not always true, and afaik york's a pretty afluent area, but it's something to be aware of
ahhhhh you are so kind, thank you for sending me all this! unfortunately, I am no longer moving to the uk because I was tragically fucked over by the university, so I'm moving to canada now. but if I ever end up moving to the uk after getting my master's (which is not out of the question!) this advice is incredibly useful, thank you so much for going into such detail, I really appreciate :')
hi~I have noticed that Cam is running his shirt business to rest his first directing project. May I ask what do you know about his directing project? Any information? Looking forward to your reply ~
——🌟
Hi 🌟, I just answered a similar ask, but I'll go a little more in depth here. He mentioned a while ago, either at the Northern Ireland comic con panel, or in a magazine interview, that he had been working with a dialect coach to help him perfect an Irish accent. It was for a role in which he'd be playing an Irish boxer, which makes sense considering he's obviously pretty passionate about boxing, plus he looks the part.
I'm not sure if that was something he'd written himself, but I do know that he studied screenwriting in college and has completed scripts that he's talked about wanted to one day develop. If I had to guess, I think he might want to do a biopic on the life of Jimmy McLarnin, nicknamed “Babyface” for his boyish looks, and considered the greatest Irish boxer of all time. But, obviously, that's just a shot in the dark. I have no idea what sort of film he'd actually want to direct if given the chance.
How is going for gold gwynriel doing??? That fic was the first fic that got me on the Gwynriel train
This is so kind!
GFG Gwynriel is doing very well 2 years past Gwyn’s last Olympics.
Gwyn did join Amren coaching in San Francisco for about a year but she quickly realized it wasn’t for her. She has the competitive spirit with herself but just feels mean pushing her students the way they need to be pushed.
Gwyn took some time after that to travel, Azriel joined her (design easel in hand, Cassian and Rhys weren’t about to give him unlimited time off to tank their business - they like their lifestyle thank you very much).
After exploring Gwyn and Azriel settled in the one place they loved more than anywhere - Dublin, Ireland. It’s close enough to Nesta and Cassian in the UK and Mor and Emerie live in New York now so flights to London are very easy. But the real reason they settled there is so Gwyn could attend Trinity College. She fell in love with the library and the idea of studying there every day. She’s taking her masters in library science and is in love with the idea of some day “being in charge of protecting history.”
They’ve been engaged for too long without wedding plans now and people keep teasing them, but Gwyn and Azriel are in no rush. They love the routine they’ve settled into in their 2 floor apartment overlooking St. Stephen’s Green and don’t see any reason to change anything just yet.
The most successful franchise partnership are built on a foundation of mutual respect between franchisors and franchisees. Much like a marriage, these relationships require open communication, collaboration, respect, trust, care and commitment in order to work. In their very nature, franchise relationships are characterized by an interdependence which requires the franchisee and franchisor to commit to the success of the other. Franchisors and franchisees need each other to succeed.
The franchisee-franchisor relationship is more than a business agreement. The recipe for success is in these seven essential ingredients:
⸻  AARON TVEIT. HE/HIM / have you ever heard of LOSE YOURSELF by eminem, well, it describes NIALL KELLEY to a tee! the 37 year old, and TENNIS COACH/EX PRO was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say  HE is more bitter or more RESOURCEFUL instead? anyway, they remind me of pristine white trainers, early morning runs, an abundance of empty energy drinks cans on the counter, backwards baseball caps and shorts in the middle of winter, maybe you’ll bump into them soon!
time in notting hill ; 9 years
tw: cancer, death, depression, injury
ABOUT.
Name: Niall Kelley Age: Thirty-seven DoB: 28th October 1985 Occupation: Tennis Coach/Ex Pro Romantic/sexual orientation: Heteroromantic/bisexual Birthplace: Dublin, Ireland Current Location: Notting Hill, London, UK Time in Notting Hill: 9 years
Niall is proper rags to riches story, he grew up in a mobile home park on the outskirts of Dublin and ended up in Notting Hill with all he ever could have dreamed of.
As a youngster he was a ball of energy, something his parents sought to rectify as soon as possible… and that was how, in the end, he found an interest in tennis.
He spent the good majority of his childhood and teen years in Ireland, aside from when he left to attend a tennis academy in Sweden anyway, and then after that he was just constantly back and forth.
He was naturally talented and thrived when he attended the academy —- competitions became a part of his daily life as he worked his way up, gradually becoming more recognised in his sport.
At sixteen, however, he lost interest, his girlfriend and his popularity in school became the only things he was bothered about.
Thankfully it didn’t last and following a year of going completely off the rails, he threw himself back into his training ten-fold. Tennis became his life.
By twenty-one he was one of the highest ranked players in the world, falling in comfortably at number fourteen.
At twenty-five Niall was named number one in the world. It only lasted for a year, but he was in and out of the top five for the next six years or so.
His life away from the court was fairly quiet, he’d go on retreats, get lost in the mountains of Europe, go out of his way to relax and forget about the game.
In the end that was where he met his wife.
They were married within six months and with a son on the way within the next three.
Both Samantha and Zachary gave him something else to focus on, the relationship he had with his family already strained, something that seemed to happen a lot with both Niall and his siblings.
Sam breached that gap for him, smoothed things over, and for a couple of years they were almost like a proper family.
But it wasn’t to last, soon things took a turn and Sam was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Niall’s game faltered, though he did his best to focus, knowing that they would need the money to keep up with her treatment.
Twice things seemed to be looking up, twice they were met with bad news, the Kelleys slowly losing faith.
Finally Sam was signed up for a new medical trail, they had hope for the first time in years… hope that was snatched away again within months.
Sam passed away peacefully in the autumn of 2017, surrounded by family and a confused little boy who wondered where his mummy had gone.
Niall went back to competing shortly after, but soon found he was no longer up to the intense competition, he’d lost his sparkle and a string of hamstring and hip injuries soon put paid to his career.
His last official competition was the 2019 US Open.
Since then he’s turned to coaching in his new found home of Notting Hill, it keeps him busy, keeps him playing the sport he loves, even if it’s not entirely ideal.
The last seven years have made Niall bitter and angry, something he does his best to hide when around strangers, although some days it does break through.
To most he’s still the charismatic young tennis player who would swagger onto the court, no one really knows the pain he constantly feels inside.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
- exes from his younger years; pre-25, college years, the last 4 years or so. - friends; just those he can call on whenever. - frenemies; - fwb; about all he manage these days. - students; anyone he coaches since turning to teaching four years ago. - old fans; fans of his from his tennis pro days. - fellow parents; his son is nine. - in-laws; anyone who was related to his late wife.
Tour Diary; Sixties Gold Tour 2022 Part 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 14, 30.10.22; Leeds
Not a rushed start to the day so we could all enjoy a bit of a lie in before battling the traffic and the weather up the A1(M). We stopped for lunch at a roadside diner which could be described as acceptable, in fact it could say it was Ok. Back on the road and round the neverending one way system that is Leeds town centre to get to the theatre.
The theatre itself was amazing; multiple floors and what can only be described as looking like the theatre from the Muppets. Great building!
It was a 2 show day so loading in and prepare to go on for the matinee despite the football being on the brothers waiting until the last minute to go on.
Really great and receptive Leeds crowd; was a lot of fun.
Off stage, quick change then off to a bar to watch the end of the football. Al and I just had a drink.
Post match back to the theatre for a slice of pizza then on for the second show. 2 out of 2 in terms of brilliant crowds; nice to later receive some live footage as well. It’s a been few days but once again I succumb to Jodie’s well placed bangers (this time under my wallet). Will there be retribution?
Headed to stay with more friends after load out; quick nightcap and a chat to end a busy but really fun few days.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 15, 2.11.22; Eastbourne
A new month, another slow drive. Who doesn’t love being on the M25? Anyway, upon arrival in a very windy Eastbourne there were new ways explored to fill the time before we went on. Al’s partner Shivs came along and gave Chesney the full hairdressing treatment. Various other band members popped in to see if it was true and almost all questioned whether he had enough time.
More friends came along to see us so we went to the bar in the interval so them. It’s so nice to see friendly faces and to catch up with people you haven’t seen in a while.
Back to the dressing (which seemed remarkably high up) and Ches was all done and looking great! So there is time for a hair appointment before showtime!
Sounded and felt really good on stage and was a great show; definitely well into the swing as we hit the halfway point.
Journey home was a bit of a struggle as we were battered by the wind and torrential rain (and flooding) but everyone got home safe. Next stop; Northern Ireland!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 16, 5.11.22; Londonderry
4:00am start to get to the airport; something about leaving the house in the dark. Actually went relatively smoothly; flight was ok and were picked up, along with a couple of the other acts and bussed to the hotel in Antrim.
A relaxing afternoon, some overpriced hotel food then bussed, along with all the other bands to the venue, an amazing old school theatre. As we had time to spare, we popped across the road for a drink and met a local couple out for their anniversary. They showed us some amazing Irish hospitality (as well as buying us too much beer) and came out with the immortal line when the wife had gone to the bathroom; “it was fookin’ shite before yous arrived”!
The gig itself was fantastic; very vocal crowd and brilliant response. Back to the hotel on the bus which appeared to have its own bar and then the poor hotel night porter had to work as a barman. Lesson learned; never go drinking with The Marmalade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day 17, 6.11.22; Belfast
A slower (and later) start to the day though we did make it downstairs for breakfast (just). We were getting a taxi to the venue (as opposed to everyone going on the coach) so a whole day of relaxing / being lazy. Al and I managed to go to a local bar, The Crown, for a most excellent pint of Guinness. Packed out show; amazing old theatre where the balcony was almost right about your head.
Despite everyone’s best intentions we did have a nightcap (or 2); Chesney made sure he was the last to go to bed - coach leaving at 8:30am to take us back to the airport. Hmm.
An amazing time in Northern Ireland was had by all.
