You are not a real person.

She has the right voice, stands the right way, wears her clothes correctly. When you look like her, you feel wrong. You can only see all the parts of yourself that fall short of her, but, any closer, wouldn't feel like you.

You are at a party. You don't know anyone her besides her friends (they are the only people you have ever known, but they never know what to make of you.) They helped you enroll in your own school, one that won't know you, one that won't know her. The other day you were desperate, uncertain and panicked. You took a pregnancy test and it came back positive. She never had to worry about that. She never has to worry about disappearing. The steps were confusing, you could've done it wrong. There is a rumble in the ground and you all leap to action, you're loading cannons, healing people, sharing the blessing of her deity (you never really bothered to ask her about all that.)

You are needed on the roof. You can feel it. The storm is thick and choking, the spray of clouds forces your eyes partly closed. You take stumbling steps towards her. She is on her knees. You've seen her pray before, but something about this is different. You can't tell if its tears or mist pooling on her face. You can't tell if its the pains of combat or the strain of heartbreak contorting her expression. The prayer itself feels wrong too, less holy and more personal. You follow her gaze.

The words leave your lips before you realize, an automatic reaction to the mammoth mess of wind and cloud and hate: "Blimey." There is a face in the storm. Monumental, twisting, grotesque, but a face nonetheless. You are good at recognizing faces. She looks a bit... No. It is grotesque. Monstrous. The face you see in nightmares. Lightning cracks and whips around you. You feel something deep and heavy click in your chest as lighting cracks inside the storm. It looks exactly like her. It looks exactly like you.

And She is beautiful.

It was awe that clicked in your chest. Fear and hope. Awful and awesome. Sublime. Recognition of a power that is beyond yourself.

You don't know what will happen to you if you survive tonight. You don't know how long you live. You don't know where you go when you die.

But you need to reach Her. You place a hand on her shoulder and take a step towards the roiling clouds, towards It. You can reach her, that is all that is certain.

The face contorts with rage and fear. It knows not what it is. It is everything that is wrong with Her. It will destroy you, when you return Her. That's O.K.

rewatching the original star wars trilogy at the moment but i had to pause halfway through TESB because i think i'm one of the few people on earth that just cannot stand han solo's fuckboy attitude and gets super annoyed and disgusted with it idk it's not sexy to me, it just makes me feel icky. ANYWAY will be giving notes on those films when i've watched them all but i rewatched rogue one because it's my favourite star wars film and i'm an exhausted, tear stained mess rn enjoy these ramblings - spoilers under the cut

i love this film so much, could go on about it for ages and ages tbh but that would be a crazy long post even for my standards, so my biggest takeaways are that it's honestly the best looking film from all of the star wars movies we've got that i've seen (i haven't seen solo yet but i'm not really interested in it tbh but if people think i should see it maybe i will). the music is phenomenal, the visuals are stunning, the casting is spot on, and the storyline is cohesive. brava fr on this one

i was so into the first half i legit didn't really make notes so that's what you get for like the first half of the film lmao i was just too glued to the screen

i am so in love with this group of people, i think they're the most dynamic of all the groups we see

With the summer season and the ending of many series, I’m finally catching up with old whumps’ lists, in particular:

* As already stated here, I’ve completed the final seasons of The Flash, Titans and Endeavor and updated the whumps lists; I’ve completed Carnival Row as well and it’s online;

* the lists from current, but not broadcasted at moment, series are all updated; The Blacklist’s tenth and final season is airing and updated to the last episode as well;

* I have to update the second season of Tale of the Nine-Tailed which is currently being aired under the name “1938″ as a prequel and I will binge watch it once fully broadcasted;

* I have done a whumpslist for the first season of Will Trent and the books by Karin Slaughter the TV show is based on, I'm still undecided whether to publish it or wait to complete them all. What would you prefer?;

* I’ve recently posted some new K-lists: Insider, Doctor Lawyer and updated Taxi Driver with the second season; I’ve also (FINALLY) completed the list for The K2, it will be posted in a couple of days; viceversa, it’s already online the whumpslist of Citadel but I really didn’t liked the show itself, many things were off...

As my plans for future binge watching and whumps’ lists:

* Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan new season will be released soon as the third season of The Witcher (I promise I have started to watch the second season of it and updating the list) which will be the last one I will do if it is true that Henry Cavill will no longer wear the clothes of Geralt of Rivia;

* I have The Musketeers list to complete (only a bunch of episodes left to review), and two seasons and half of The Last Ship;

* i have selected many K-dramas I want to watch this summer, I don’t know if any of them are worth of a whumpslist but I certainly hope so!

My digital art has gone stale, anyways I’m a rant about the ideas in my brain for this underneath

If you’re reading this please critique me. Now then,

Some basics I need to go over-

1.) This s mostly an explanation of how everyone gets into the situation they are in. This is mostly about the k2 kids, I plan to make one for the k1 kids, and everyone’s personality(excluding staff of course).

2.) Carla and Ron are partners in crime(Ron lost a bet okay).

3.) Ozzy’s third friend was the monster that attacked Penny, they were killed by Bob that day(Much to the principal's displeasure).

4.) There is a dumb class teacher, they are not that important, but they are worth mentioning.

So Penny found out about her mom’s experiments after her chip got fried. In a panic and chip malfunction, she killed her mother. Now Penny has to figure out how to get Alice out, and how to kill the other staff.

(Note: I’m not sure if Penny would let Bob die, after all he’s just a janitor with no idea what’s actually going on, and he, ya know, saved her. I don’t think she would kill Stevie either, after he’s a child who probably didn’t know as well. For now, just assume they get out safe.)

She decides to call Carla and Ron into the principal’s office(as it is a normal occurrence for them). When they enter they find the body and a distressed Penny. Carla has seen worse and more or less comforts Penny(also mentally celebrating), Ron on the other is more worried about what to do with the body. Penny gives an explanation, and she needs help dealing with the staff to save Alice.

Plans are discussed and they decide on who kills who, Ron gets the dumb class teacher, Carla all to excited gets to kill Danner, and Penny decides to finish the family bloodline. Stuff happens, staff dies, and the other k2 students get regretfully involved, and they go and save Alice.

(Note 2: I have no clue what to do with Agnes. Just assume she’s probably fine.)

Alice gets saved and everyone tries to leave... When Penny stops them. I should note that Penny is still malfunctioning, her chip is going haywire, she isn’t thinking rationally at all, and we don’t have Monty yet. So Penny stops them, she starts rambling about how adults are bad, if they go out they will become like those bad adults, and everyone should stay here, to be safe! We get mostly confused answers-

(Carla pointing out that not adults can be bad, I mean we have Bob!)

(Ron and Ozzy talking about their mothers and how there is no way they could be bad.)

(Madison and Alice are mostly questioning why is Penny trying to kidnap(?) them, they just saved Alice, let them go.) Felix and Teddy stay silent, Felix because he finds this discussion boring and “Teddy and I are on a strict schedule Pen, we need to be home soon.” Teddy on the other hand, he believes it full force. He knows what his father does(Felix does to, but Felix sees this as normal.), and his father’s chemicals are down here in this creepy lab for goodness sakes! But Teddy doesn’t speak because he’s afraid of how Felix and the others will react.

Penny realizing that no one is listening to her, maybe except for Teddy. She forces everyone to stay there, so she show them proof that all adults are bad! It was rather for a robot to falsify documents for people to listen, and plus it was even easier for the Huxley twins.

So after some lies(for the good of her friends, of course! And Alice can’t remember much, so let’s keep her safe as well!) Penny, eventually convinces everyone to stay, even Ozzy who’s schedule can be changed this quickly we promise! and it’s okay Felix, it’s just your father never loved you or your brother. This is when they start to work to keep themselves alive, stealing, crimes, you know, things five years-old usually do! Also some missing eyes and a broken leg, but it is mostly fine and dandy.

It was all fine, until a new school of kids moved into Penny’s school.

These kids seemed like the type who need to be saved in Penny’s mind;

The ginger with glasses and a scientist coat, the boy in a yellow tank-top and bandages, the boy with the red coat and contraband, the girl with pigtails and a pink vest, the boy with a striped shirt and yellow backpack. The kids with matching pink flowers.

They could be saved, Penny could keep these kids safe, just a little staff removal and possible false documents, but it was for the greater good. And after all,

They came to her school

They clearly need saving from those bad adults

Some things I’d like to see in the KOTOR remake(s), assuming they actually get released. I know some of it is a bit idealistic, but I can dream 😆

More customisation: maybe your character has a larger body, or freckles, or the braided hairstyle but blonde. They’re Twilek, Mirialan, or Zabraki! Non binary! Asexual! Anything goes, babey!!

Improved graphics and animation: ok, this is practically a given, but still. Have you seen characters get killed, then stand back up so they can die properly? Or characters knocked down when frozen getting back up and re-freezing (in that ridiculous pose) 😆. Revan’s dance moves stay, obviously, they’re just smoother.

Companions can roam ship/have schedules: Mostly they’ll be where they are now, but sometimes you’ll find Atton taking a nap, or Mission at the food replicator, and so on. Maybe you’ll even see someone patching themselves up in the med bay after a particularly rough battle.

Seperate the first name/last name fields: Sometimes I find a good first name but want to randomise the last. Also, giving every character my full name whilst trying to stay under the radar is counterintuitive. 😄

Romance: make Carth and Bastila bi, improve Juhani’s romance options (keep her a lesbian though), and add romance to the Kotor 2 characters (and Canderous in K1 because I know some people want that). You should be able to turn them down at any point though if you want.

Hide weapons unless fighting: We’ve all had a character stab themself when meditating or something. Also this

Small decorations: just having little trinkets and stuff appear throughout the game as you complete various tasks. Maybe you could keep one gizka, or pazzak cards/credits stack up as you win more games, or you get a sticker saying “Visit Manaan!”, etc.

Containers say when empty: this one is just here because I’m stupid and can’t remember shit 😆

[K1] Change Tach sound: those seconds between descending into the shadowlands and finding the mute button are the longest seconds of my life. (I know there’s mods, but they aren’t available on console)

[K1] Influence system/relationship changes: It really doesn’t make sense that Carth and Bastila will watch you do something dark sided and just make a small comment before pretending it never happened. Lightside companions should become more wary of you the darker you get, with Bastila giving you more lectures, for example.

[K1] Solo/not mc sections: I really like these sections in Kotor 2, so it’d be nice to have some in the first one too. Maybe someone could deal with the Mandalorian raiders while you’re training as a Jedi, or Canderous does the Genoharadan quest. Or entirely new stuff.

[K1] Change equipment on the Hawk: Also from Kotor 2. It’s very annoying to keep taking characters off the ship just to give them better stuff

[K1] Cutscenes on ship: yet another thing from Kotor 2. Carth asking Bastila how she got captured, Carth and Canderous’ Warrior or Soldier discussion, and Mission asking Bastila about using the force for fun could all easily take place on the ship, along with other convos.

[K2] references to/import data from K1: I’d like to see people talk about the time Revan saved/destroyed Hrakert rift and affected the kolto, or about them being swoop champ, and stuff like that.

[K2] Finished product: all the stuff the Restored Content Mod deals with should be there from the beginning, no need for mods or dlc *cough* Switch port *cough*. I know we’re going to mod the game anyway, but it should be for fun stuff and minor bug fixes, not restoring half the game!

A planet much like Earth is just around the corner, so-to-speak....

Ok, Ok, I've seen information online about this new discovery of a planet just like earth, but over twice the size of earth.

It's called K2-18b, you can google that number to read about it.

But what no one is saying is that this new earth like planet is like 124 light years away,...and using our fastest space shuttle technology speed it would take 15,500 years to travel 120 light-years, let alone 124 light years!

But if we didn't stop at any rest stops along the way we could probably make up 4 light years I'm thinking (that's a joke).

So the people that left on our spaceship to go to this new earth would die of old age along the way,... then their offspring would take over, and they would die of old age along the way, and then that whole process would go through about 600 generations of people,...... and I don't think they can pack that much food on board one of those space shuttles, or any other rocket ship known to exist today.

We'd have to beef up NASA's budget ten-fold, and take the money from the defense budget so we could fast track our rocket technology to make a rocket technology something like we see on star trek, which could be a reality it we put enough money into the project,......... but I don't ever see that happening with the republicans or the democrats, and maybe the Green Party would do it, but Americans don't vote Green Party because both republicans and democrats tell Americans the Green Party is like the Communist party, and Americans are stupid enough to believe it..............

So there is NOT going to be any Earth alternative, because right now both parties say we need our tax dollars for defense to build better weapons...

I mean even if by some act of our fake God's people did vote to go to this new earth, with the leaders we have today, we'd just be starting the whole process over again, of stripmining this new planet,.. and there would be wealthy billionaires and poverty stricken people just like we got on this old earth,... same as the old earth tragedy, would just take longer to cause that new earth to convulse into global warming, that's all............

Ya see,... if you want things to change you have to do different!!!!! Not the same fucking thing like we human beings are known for doing voting for the same stupidity with just a different name thinking it will change anything.....

Now some my ask "how many light years away is Mars"?

I mean since we are trying to go there to see if human beings can terraform that dead rock to sustain life, which will in the end prove we can no better live on Mars than we can our own Moon which is right in our back yard to practice on.

Ya see,.. Mars isn't even one light year away, it's 178.72 million miles from earth, and takes seven to eight months to fly there in our known technology spacecraft, so that's why we are trying to go there to see if we can habitat it.

But mars isn't anything like earth, just about the opposite in every way, and mars is only half the size of earth, so very much smaller,...and it will cost just as much to make mars like earth as going to K2-18b planet that is already set to sustain human life when we get there.

......... and I know, I know,....... what if there are life forms at this new earth like us already living there,........... and your answer is 'we won't ever know' because the governments of earth will get there first and extinguish any life-like humans there, and nobody will know until centuries later when there is nothing that can be done about it,........... hell just ask earth's Native Americans about that concept and they will wholeheartedly concur!

But just for pipe dreams sake, wouldn't it be nice to think about another planet just like earth, over twice the size,.... and what a wonderful world that would be, as the song says.........

The P90’s magazine holds 50 rounds and is translucent, meaning you can see the bullets depleting at 1,000 RPM. The full list of changes in the PUBG 13.2 update can be seen in the patch notes, but it’s safe to say, Taego benefits. It gets all the cool new stuff, while the other maps get the hand-me-downs. The earliest would be PCS5 or potentially PGC 2021.Taego is like the favored child of PUBG. How soon Taego enters the competitive map cycle is unknown. Nobody necessarily likes self-revives and gulags into pro play. We do hope the new map mechanics are also not added into esports play. This terrain is too unfavorable for anyone approaching south to north. This area resembles a worse version of the Erangel lumber yard/prison woods mixed with the steepness of Stalber. Problems would only arise if circles are consistently going toward the top Army Base section of the map. Our short test (20 matches) gave a strong sense of the map being quite balanced for esports play. The new patch finally introduces another 8×8 map suitable for competitive play. This is a fun new update to the game, and you can play it on PC now or on console pretty soon. There are going to be some other changes to the balancing and everything else in the game. Seats 1, 3 and 4 wont be able to do drive-buys. It goes up to 150kmh on roads and can only utilize one seat for a player to peek shot from.

Pony Coupe – This is a new 4-seat vehicle for the map.

It is a mix between Mini14 and SKS doing 50DMG on shot, and a bullet velocity similar to the mini14.

MK12 – This one is a Taego exclusive DMR.

By stats and damage output it is a copy of G36C but handles way better.

K2 – This is a new AR that’s coming into the game with the update, only on Taego.

Two new guns and one vehicle are the new additions on Taego. In Squads this means that as long 1 player holds a self-resurrect on him his entire squad will not be eliminated if all four players are knocked. This allows them to revive without a teammate there to do it for them. On top of the Comeback mechanic, there is another second-chance feature. This feature is only running in the early portion of the game though, so things are going to stay balanced. Players who survive in the comeback arena get to return to the map. This functions pretty similarly to the Gulag in Warzone. This feature means that when players die, they head to a unique area called the Comeback Arena. Comeback/Respawn FeaturesĬomeback is a new mechanic which is going to be working on Taego. This means we finally get another 8×8 map in the competitive PUBG rotation. It’s also open to 100 players, which while the standard for PUBG has been lowered in recent maps. If a player takes a shot, you’re going to know from the reaction of the local wildlife.Īlongside this new feature, the new map features no red zone and clear weather. There are birds and creatures around the map that react dynamically to the way the game goes. By the feel of it, its a mix between Erangel and Sanhok in layout and feel, and 8×8 by size. SO MANY reviews for rogue one, including from critics whose insights i always really appreciate, were all “this movie is just fanservice, ‘hey remember yavin?? remember darth vader choking people?? remember tarkin?? remember the death star??’ these characters are boring and underdeveloped and i feel pandered to k2 and the vader scene were the only good things about this movie blablabla”

when that movie gave us new, complex and consistent characters with interesting team dynamics, expanded on the universe without ever contradicting anything that we learned in previous movies, a story with an honest-to-god message actually in the spirit of the OT, every cameo was self-contained but relevant to the narrative (except for 3PO i guess, but come on), every callback was an allusion with its own visual interest and relevance except for when they recycled the shots of the death star firing (and again, come on), and, and honestly i will never not be mad about this stupid argument, no it ISN’T another movie where they build a death star, it’s a f***ing prequel and it’s the same death star because the whole point is that “oh we just aquired the plans to this super secret space weapon from our oppressive overlords don’t ask where we found it maybe we got it on ebay idk” is a weird thing to just gloss over and there was an interesting story to tell there, exhibit A: Rogue One.

I think that humans have incredible senses they don’t yet know how to quantify. Not just a sixth sense. More than that. Let’s go point by point shall we?

Ghosts

I’ve talked about drifters. Those little electrical storms. They pick up details. Often they can record events in space and time. They imprint emotions. This is why they can sometimes seem sentient. They aren’t. Most of the negative experiences people have of them are in fact the product of you interacting with the storm and creating your own haunt. It will fill the space you give it. If you’re afraid, it will do something. Test it right now. Take a K2 meter. Go someplace you find calm. Sit in the dark, and make the K2 light up. You can. It’s sending you. You sit and ask a ghost “did you die here?” And if you believe in a ghost, you’ll get a reply. If you say “light it up once for yes and two for no” well…you are interacting. All ghost investigations should be done with no people in the space. You alter the environment as does anything electrical. So…you can’t see what you’re looking for.

Prescience

Time isn’t linear. We know this to be true. Some particles move through time differently. I believe you are either perceiving this along your own timeline, or are feeling a backward kind of ripple from the impact of an event. There’s a book by Heinlein (whom I dislike as a person but wrongs a few decent things) called childhood’s end. Essentially it boils down to, an alien race appears and tells humanity the world is going to end. The leader of the alien race look like the devil. Because of this, humanity won’t trust them. The world ends. Humanity had the idea of the devil because of the person who was the harbinger of the end, and it echoed backward. I think you’re most able to do that within your own lifespan, feed yourself information that halts your decisions. I believe I can also do it. I think this is partly why I have such good luck.

Telepathy

I’ve seen this with my own eyes. I think it’s one part cold reading (or awareness of common thoughts, ticks, cues, and so forth) and one part syncing up your thoughts or habits or energy with another.

Telekinesis

Again, an interaction with the drifter or environment. Poltergeists target most often, adolescent people. Why? Their brains are reprogramming and therefore they may actually be incredibly sensitive to environmental phenomenon. Usually the person linked to the poltergeist is enduring some other kind of emotional trauma, like assault or abuse. This manifests in them punishing themselves.

Possession

Demons aren’t real. They only affect those with very serious issues of the mind. I cannot prove this, but neither does experiential or anecdotal data support that they do. The difficulty is that people who se to have these afflictions are often immediately insulated and enshrouded in communities of belief. Those communities feed into the idea rather than analyze it. They aren’t interested in curing. They exist to use the affliction as proof of their beliefs. That is my feeling on the matter. In my experience, people who are possessed, do much better with therapy and medications…now that we have them. I’ve never once met anything scarier than me. Ever.

Reincarnation

Why do I put this here? Because I don’t believe in it, but I do believe in the phenomenon of picking up the information of someone else’s life. If you can mess about with time, thoughts within your species, the environment, space, then why is it not possible to say “Jimmy woke up remembering Pam’s life. Pam died thirty years ago.” It’s not that complex. Information went out. It got picked up by a newly forming brain.

These are all my thoughts. Science hasn’t proven a thing except that time isn’t linear, objects can be made to move in high EMF, and humans are EMF sensitive.

Getting it down on paper for the sake of posterity because I'm about to have my first canon encounter with Satine and I'd like to see how my opinions match up after I actually watch this episode:

I can't stand fanon Satine. No idea how much it's aligned with her canon incarnation, but she tends to victim-blame to a truly gross degree.

And for reference...I do identify as an actual, real-life pacifist. Not in a video game fiction kind of way; I truly believe that if we're at the point where "war will solve this problem" becomes a viable answer, it's because everything up till now has been wildly mismanaged and we are not in a "good" situation where we're the heroes, merely a disaster in which we're stuck addressing the problem in dehumanizing, unproductive ways that are 'least bad' but in no way good.

(nobody in the history of the fucking planet has ever declared "oh, you just had to kill my friends and family for me to realize I was wrong"! Getting to the point of war is a failure in the first place.)

So I don't criticize Satine from a place of knowing absolutely nothing about pacifism, philosophically speaking. I may not have a doctorate in it, but I've thought a lot about my beliefs and I feel that I understand them.

But goddamn, the Satine I've seen in fanfic dances on the border of cultural genocide for how much she doesn't seem to understand that it's difficult for people to revise their entire understanding of life and they must channel their needs of expression in some way and (again, fanon) Satine doesn't seem to be able to understand that.

I've occasionally boiled down my personal perspective to "I hate Mandalorians", but I don't, actually--I just hate the fanon engagement and fetishization of Mandalorians as some kind of "better" culture. I really enjoyed KOTOR's take on Canderous Ordo, with him having complicated feelings about how his society deifies honor through violence and eventually accepting that there isn't a binary concept of "weakness" (again: all of your missions on Dxun are essentially wrangling his lost, incompetent kids, but by K2 Canderous accepts that people have to be allowed to learn and boiling everything down to BLOOD AND HONOR doesn't work).

I really enjoy that approach to Mandalorians and their culture, but I don't think I've seen that anywhere except the KOTOR games, hah. Fandom--and 98% of the EU--seems to approach Mandalorians with a completely unironic Fremen deification and that's what I can't stand.

I back button when I see the Obi-Wan/Satine tag at this point lmao (fanon) Satine doesn't seem to understand that the foundation of pacifism is understanding your enemy and feeling like they don't deserve to die--instead, she's just angrily condescending about people that don't have her perspective. It's as if that, rather than intending to engage with the "enemy" and reach some sort of compromise, fanon Satine subtly expects other people to kill her enemies so she doesn't have to dirty her own hands with them.

I've also frankly got no idea what the canon Mandalorian history is now. I've seen people that I respect saying that "the idea of Satine perpetuating cultural genocide is preposterous", so I'm totally willing to believe that I have a fanon-tainted perspective. I'm just making this post to detail what fanon is tainting my perspective before I watch the actual episode.

...and just from a meta perspective, wow we've really put ourselves in a weird position by declaring that the blonde, pale Mandalorian is the righteous, correct one and the darker-skinned ones are violent animals. Do you have 5+ headcanons for the Marvellous Ladies' magical besties Nora and Behrad?

For you, always. For this verse, always.

1. Nora doesn’t- didn’t- do friends after seeing most chased off by her father and a few die at his hand. Even with him locked away, she wasn’t ready to open up. And certainly not to the eager apprentice who had joined her when she decided to let magic back into her life. But then they had to get off K2 together and you kinda can’t help but let the other person stick around after that.

2. Behrad is desperate to learn as much as he can to try and find Zari. It’s been hanging over his head since he was a child. When he nearly ends up getting his soul trapped in a book, Nora is the one to bail him out. After that, Behrad spills the beans of why he decided to learn magic. In turn, Nora tells him about her father and her prior career before she stepped back into the life of magic.

3. Cloak is the third person of the friendship. If Behrad and Nora are on the outs, it locks them in the library until they get things straightened out.

4. Nora and Behrad house Jax and Clarissa in Atlanta for a short period of time following the blowout between Sara and Felicity. Clarissa has grown more concerned about the boys living their lives to find Zari and Lily until Nora tells her that Behrad has talent and found his passion in it. Nora is invited out to San Francisco when things die down.

5. Behrad’s seeking spells start going off base after they help out the Asgardians. When he shares the spell with Nora and they do it together, they see an alien planet being attacked and ravaged. What they don’t realize is that they’ve seen Mallus’s first wave of destruction and he’s onto Asgard next.

Appreciation for Rogue One: A Rebel Narrative I Can Get Behind

I was more of a casual Star Wars fan before Rogue One. I’d seen the originals, prequels and TFA before. I was partial to the originals for their dialogue and characters, though I was intrigued by the character of Kylo Ren. It wasn’t until I saw Rogue One - which ironically was a movie I had very low expectations for stepping into the theater - that I really got absorbed into Star Wars as a universe and fandom.

Although Rogue One has memorable characters and dialogue (you can thank K2-SO for a lot of that), this alone isn’t what set it apart from the other Star Wars films for me. Episode IV and V sealed the franchise for decades with the excellent character chemistry and banter, so I feel like witty lines are more of a necessity in Star Wars than a bonus (which is why fans get so upset when they feel the dialogue is poorly written). What makes Rogue One special is how it goes beyond these micro interactions to build a believable sociopolitical universe.

This world-building is largely achieved through the emphasis on blurred morality and the elimination of predefined heroes and villains. None of the characters are endowed with an omniscient sense of distinguishing “good guys” vs. “bad guys”, as DJ from The Last Jedi would put it. This is, of course, aided by the fact that both the Rebel Alliance and the Imperials are subdivided into political factions, all of which use highly questionable tactics at some point in the movie. Undoubtedly, the Empire is still the villain in the end from an audience perspective, but unlike other Star Wars films, the validity or even the existence of the morally just alliance is not taken for granted.

Jyn Erso enters her journey recognizing the evil of the Empire but nonetheless dubious of the Rebel Alliance. When we meet her in the Wobani Labor Camp, she’s disillusioned by politics, which is a realistic and understandable reaction for someone stuck in the bottom tiers of society. When confronted by Saw Gerrera’s passion for the counterrevolutionary cause, she has no reason to share his zeal and declares that she has no reason to support the Rebels who have only “brought her pain”. The audience is biased towards the Rebels, but to give the characters this innate bias would be unrealistic and diminish the validity of the universe. The screenwriters of Rogue One avoid this trap. In doing so, they make Jyn’s decision to lead the Rogue One squad later in the film much more meaningful than if she’d just been naturally gifted with a revolutionary spirit. It also makes her choice to defy the Rebel Council more believable.

Finally, Rogue One manages to convey the theme of hope without empty cliches and schmaltzy victories. The protagonists go through hell and ultimately perish together, but even in their last moments, they know that they didn’t die in vain. To me, that is far more powerful than having a miraculous triumph or your typical happily ever after ending. Through the titular team’s willingness to make sacrifices and confrontation with the dominant force both within and outside their alliance, Rogue One truly demonstrates that “Rebellions are built on hope”.
