I’ve noticed in Torchwood tags that mention of how character/character is not a rarepair (cough jack/john cough). But the thing is, every single pairing in Torchwood that is not Jack/Ianto IS a rarepair. It’s not about whether or not it’s canon, it’s about how much of the fandom discusses the pairing, and oh boy do I have some numbers for you.
tl;dr: EVERYTHING not Jack/Ianto is a rarepair by default because Jack/ianto dominates the Torchwood landscape so overwhelmingly (in the most affectionate way, because I love them intensely too).
The day is 22 March 2023 and there are 12,406 Jack/ianto fics on Ao3. I haven’t even delved into ff.net and wattpad. As someone who loves janto, this makes me very happy and it’s a huge win for a show that actually canonically embraces queer pairings. Now, let’s take a look at some other pairings who you might think ‘isn’t a rarepair’:
Jack/John: 337 fics (3% of the number of Jack/ianto fics) The fact that they made out on screen and caused a ton of horny property damage is just a bonus for us.
Gwen/Rhys, a beloved canon couple: 1,456 fics (got to 10% yay, but my math teachers taught me that 10% is not ‘a lot.’ Certainly still within Fanlore’s definition of “a small proportion of the overall total” [Fanlore:Rarepair source]) Also had some of the sweetest kisses and unhinged wedding moments which we are lucky to have.
Tosh/Owen: 944 fics (8%). EIGHT PERCENT. Tosh/Owen, the pairing that often is tagged along with a Jack/Ianto fic, still is only EIGHT PERCENT of the number of janto fics. What hope do any of the rarepairs rarer than them have????
The answer: none. None hope. Some more examples:
Owen/Andy: 30 fics
Gwen/Tosh: 61 fics
Lisa/Ianto, also canon: 597 fics (I encourage you to take a guess at how many of these are endgame janto btw. You guessed right)
Jack/Ten: 888 fics (Not even the power of being with a Doctor Who character could get close to janto)
Okay, but what if!! What if we simply shipped janto with another character? Surely that will carry it past a rarepair threshold (I’m arbitrarily setting it to 50% of janto fics)? Nope.
Jack/Ianto/John (my bias): 53 fics
Jack/Ianto/Gwen (HOT): 60 fics
So please please embrace the fact that this fandom is a fandom where everyone is in a rarepair, we love our rarepairs, and we are all resting in the shadow of our janto whale ❤️

Soooo, since AO3 is lagging like hell for me (it doesn't show my new fic in the main tag. at all rip), I have a little treat for the holidays! Tags under the cut.
I have a new Ghost Soap fic; With The Softness Of Your Breath.
Summary:
After being medically discharged, John Mactavish finds himself in a monotonous predicament. His life has lost its trajectory completely, he has nothing, and no one, in it to make him find that spark of enjoyment again.
When a letter arrived informing him that he inherited his Grandparent's farm, he decided to visit to figure out what he wanted to do about the property. Little did he know, there was someone familiar waiting for him in that farm; someone he hasn't seen since he was a little kid.

starting these both as a fun rec list and as a way to encourage myself to start reading more physical media outside of classwork :) HIGHLY recommend the first three as well. the beowulf translation i honestly would only recommend if you're a beowulf / old english lit fan tho it's definitely an interesting interpretation
Korea Between Empires, 1895--1919 (Andre Schmidt)
Pilgrim Bell (Kaveh Akbar)
The Crown Ain't Worth Much (Hanif Abdurraqib)
Bring Out Your Dead: The Past as Revelation (Anthony Grafton)
Beowulf transl. Maria Dahvana Headley

Unpopular take (it seems) but if you read a fic and you enjoyed something about it and didn’t hate it, it’s simple courtesy to leave kudos. It costs absolutely nothing and takes two seconds to click on a button. You don’t even need to have an ao3 account to leave kudos. You get the writing absolutely for free from someone who did the hard work of writing it and kudos is a simple way to show appreciation that’s completely easy for a reader.
I don’t think people realize how much creators need interactions as their lifeblood and how much even a simple kudos or comment can be extremely motivating. A fic shouldn’t have to be a Shakespearean manuscript written in blood to be worthy of kudos. It can be something like “Oh I like the idea of this fic” or “I like how they wrote this character or this relationship.” If people can’t even be bothered to take that simple step to show appreciation to writers then there’s something really wrong with this world.

Just read "I'll let you give it to me" and ohhhh my God that was so good? And so hot? Your brain >>>>>
Actually speechless
Hello! Thank you for the ask and double thank you for the compliment!! I actually have a lot to say on the matter, so forgive me for using your ask to do it.
So I'm going to be perfectly honest and admit that I'll Let You Give It To Me, despite being a PWP, was a struggle to finish. I started writing it almost immediately after posting Croissants in Abu Dhabi and was finally able to pick it back up and finish it this weekend.
Part of the reason I set it down was because I got distracted writing other things (Baker!Pierre & 1016 Week prompts were happening around that time) and the other part is due to the comments I was getting on I’ve Got a Feeling That I’m Not Complete Anymore.
They were, to put it bluntly, mean.
There was about 24 hours that I spent crying on & off about them and I couldn't write a word of anything for 2 weeks. (That's not an exaggeration.)
The problem was, the comments weren't wrong. The commenters were mad about actions the characters were taking and, unfortunately, directing that anger at me, the author. (I haven't deleted any of those comments by the way, so they can be read on AO3.)
The characters that I wrote into that fic...they're far from perfect. Pierre is more than a little selfish and inconsiderate, Charles is definitely an enabler and has his own selfish moments, and Max is completely hypocritical about what he wants.
I wanted to write about a messy relationship and...well...I did.
That's why I haven't deleted the comments. They're correct on multiple fronts. I just wish those commenters had the presence of mind to consider the impact their harsh words would have on me. (Recognizing that this is a selfish request on my part but, well, it is my writing.)
They're supposed to be mad at the characters, they're supposed to want better for them, and they're supposed to see how those characters try and improve themselves, even if it isn't perfect.
I don't know about anyone else, but I think perfection in relationships is a) impossible and b) boring.
I'd also be remiss if I didn't thank the wonderful, amazing, @duquesademiel for being incredible. She dedicated an entire day to reading my fic and, essentially, live reacting to it in my DMs. (Plus, she left the most amazing comment on the final chapter that makes me 🥰)
That completely reignited my love for this universe and helped convince me to finish what I had started with this PWP.
So, yeah, this was just a smutty little one-shot for most people. For me, this is an accomplishment. I was able to set aside the negative comments and write something that brings me joy.
Hearing that it brought other people joy too is, as Max would put it, simply lovely. So thank you for taking time out of your day not just to read it, but to come here and tell me you enjoyed it. Positive comments and feedback like yours help motivate me to keep writing, and to keep improving my writing. 💚
