You know what I don’t even care if the little mermaid doesn’t do well in theaters. Fuck the haters, I’m going to cherish this movie forever. I cried the first time I watched it, the second, and I will cry the third. I will cry when I watch it with my daughters knowing that they will get to grow up with the black mermaid that their mother dreamed of seeing on tv. I genuinely wanted this movie to be something for everyone to enjoy, but if people want to be racist about it that’s ok too. Maybe it is only for the little black girls who dreamed of being mermaids. Imma be excited and proud and flaunt it all the same.

His mind is already at full tilt and swinging, running through the optics, when the door to the bathroom opens. It’s probably Nora, or Amy, or one of the other Secret Service guys who’d scraped him off the floor with the cake and ushered him into said bathroom while Henry got whisked away by his own staff.

At least it’s not a guest. They’ve blocked off the area so no one else can get through. Except maybe a member of the royal family, which, like that would be happening anyway.

Alex looks up and—oh. Shit. His eyes meet Henry’s in the mirror.

And then Alex is whipping around to face him head-on because he literally cannot believe what he’s seeing right now.

Henry’s suit is pristine. His shoes are so polished that Alex could probably see his own face in them. His pants look freshly pressed, his cuffs like they could cut a person, and how is this even possible?

“What the actual fuck,” says Alex.

“Charming as ever,” Henry says shortly, letting the door close behind him. “Are you going to remove your jaw from the floor, or do you require the Secret Service for that too?”

He has got to be joking. Alex gapes and gestures at him. “Says the one who just had birds and palace mice change your whole outfit and redo your hair.”

Why did he say that? He has no idea why he just said that.

Mini analysis/interpretation of the ‘you look good in firelight’ scene

Obi feels more comfortable in the dark - obscured from prying eyes - is more in his element. Relaxes and is less jokey and deflective, more honest. Shown in this scene with shirayuki and she must see him be like that a lot at night.

She finds his comfortable, natural demeanour attractive and that links with when he is lit by firelight.

As an adaptation that had to cut a bunch of things to work itself into a single movie, "Red, White, & Royal Blue" did a really good job.

Obviously there's things I wish were still there, like June or Alex's Bi awakening, but overall the movie is fun and a good "feel" for the book. And, of course, I can tell people to read the book if they liked the movie.

Also the small shot of Alex reading McQuiston's other book, One Last Stop, is so funny to me

I will say though the disco elysium witch idea could kinda work only if the witch looks as crusty and fucked up as harry dearest

I don't really agree, a huge part of Disco Elysium is a gritty critique of society and fascism. Harry being cringefail is one part but there's also tons of anti-fascist points being made throughout the game, and the setting they've chosen is essential to fit those themes. It hits home so hard because you're a guy working as a detective, and you're faced with corruption and all these different problems with society head on. Harry was, in the past, part of a gang and is the only surviving member. Harry struggles with substance abuse to help him get cases done, and he's solved 216 in just 18 years. He's kind of become the authority he used to fight against. If you add a bunch of traditional-style magic and make the main character a witch, and completely change the setting and make it about your neighbor's cat instead of trying to unravel the corruption within your workplace or solve a murder, it's just a different game. It won't matter how cringe or alcoholic you make the witch; if you change the context, the setting, the main character, you're changing the story and the point it makes. I really don't feel like it would be comparable at that point. The person who suggested making a Disco Elysium inspired game about a young witch in the alps raising plants looking for a lost cat wants a cute relaxing game. I'm not sure why they would project that onto Disco Elysium, because DE is an exploration of morality and a man's insanity and how he chooses to cope with trying to work within reality, while struggling to stay a good person. They just wanted to play a different game.

Part Three

I'm very proud of these dolls, and I'm also leaving them at my parents' house, so I did a little photoshoot with some books as background so I can have nice pictures of them.

This is the third post, so check out the first for more info!

First up is Vanellope with Museum of Thieves, by Liam Tanner. It’s about a young girl who lives in a 1800s/early 1900s esque city that has extremely oppressive “protective” laws around children (they’re literally chained all the time, for one). Then she ‘steals herself’ and finds a wonderful and dark refuge in the Museum of Thieves. I feel like this would really appeal to Vanellope, as a chaotic and free spirited girl herself.

(Also I think the game on the books website still work, I played it at least a few years ago, which is great! Really reminds me of when I was young and the internet was more free)

Second is Sofia the First with my DP anthology (Happily Ever After Stories, author: I forgot to write that down) that I’ve had since I was at least 4 (Please excuse the sun damage). I seriously considered letting Kida have this one, because she actually had a story in here, but then I realized that I had a better one for her. But I feel like Sofia the first would probably love this. I think it has all the Disney Princesses up to Mulan (because this was published before The Princess and The Frog), plus Alice in Wonderland and Kida? But I don’t remember rn. For some reason I feel like the latest official DP in there is Jasmine. I’m not super familiar with Sofia or her related characters but I felt she should be included.

Third is Sofia’s sister Amber, with A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I feel like she would read this, empathize heavily with Sarah, and unironically not realize she would be part of the problem. Or at least, the version of her from the beginning of Sofia’s tv show would bully Sarah. (Yes she’s a different type of doll than the others but she came free with some of the harder to find ones I ordered off of Ebay.)

Fourth is Elsa with My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I’m not sure mentally HealthIER (she still has a ways to go IMO) Elsa from the end of the second movie would read this. But I KNOW depressed Elsa would read this just to torture herself.

Fifth is Anna and Olaf with Frozen II Movie Theatre Storybook & Movie Projector by Marilyn Easton. I bought this before the movie came out, and sadly it did not contain much more info than the trailers gave us. But it’s still fun to have, and the stylization was pretty. The projector still works, though I need to clean the film. I used to have a bunch of these as a kid. Definitely had a Sleeping Beauty one. In any case, I feel like Anna would be delighted to see an illustrated version of her adventures, and once I thought of using this book, I couldn’t think up anything I’d want to use more as Anna’s background.

Sixth is Kristoff and Sven with It’s A Magical World, A Calvin and Hobbes Collection by Bill Watterson. I feel like Kristoff would enjoy the often dry humor, the lovely artwork, Calvin’s cuteness sometimes, and the relationship between Calvin and HIS animal friend, Hobbes. I actually have a bunch of these compilations but of course I picked the winter one for Kristoff lol. I know he isn’t a Dp but he came out in the same line and I like him anyhow.

Seventh is Elena of Avalon with Kamaisama Kiss (Kamisama Hajimemashita) by Julietta Suzuki. I don’t know a ton about Elena, but both she and Nanami had a sucky life for a while, and then were suddenly given a lot of power and magic, and silly hijinks ensued.

Eight is Moana and a pet chicken with Time Cat, by Lloyd Alexander. She probably doesn’t even know wha a cat IS, so I feel like from start to finish she would be enthralled with all the cultures and the main concept of Time Travel within the book.

Ninth is Raya with Dragon Bones, by Patricia Briggs. I think she’d pick it up, excited to read about Dragons, and then be so mystified with many of the concepts she wouldn’t be able to put it down. Coincidentally it also has a Dragon who can turn human and is pretty much the only one left. No it is not the human on the cover.

Last for this post is Namaari with Dragonworld, by many different people. It’s basically an art book with many different interpretations of Dragons. I think Namaari is the BIGGEST dragon nerd out of the characters in Raya’s movie, so this would definitely be right up her alley.
