#but not ofmd being ableist

I did not find Izzy's death ableist in any sense. Before I saw the episode I did have a fear that they would portray him sacrificing himself for the crew because he was "too broken to go on" or some other ableist bullshit. But instead he dies at a point in his life where he's probably happier than he's ever been. That's what makes it so affecting! He has community, he has friends, he's valued and knows it. And all this happened after he lost his leg. His life was not only still worth living, it was more joyful. And he doesn't die sacrificing himself or due to his disability. He dies in a twist of fate during a dangerous situation.
I didn't read him telling Ed at the end that he wanted to go as suicidality. He was bleeding out already. Ed continuing to apply direct pressure to the wound might have kept him alive for a little longer but it was causing him significant pain. He preferred to go a little more quickly but much more comfortably in the arms of someone he'd finally made his peace with.

full offense but fandoms are unbearable because y’all are unlikable. y’all are so weird and i will die on that hill.
this is like the third time i’ve been in a fandom where a white male SIDE character is heavily favored by the fandom and they start jumping through hoops, and grabbing reasons out their asses, to prove why the main poc character is a terrible person. they will also ignore any wrongdoing of the side white male character.
it’s so fucking weird and exhausting.

idk all I'm saying is I'm an Elder Queer, at this point, and all I hear when I see some fuck claiming that David J or anyone on the staff of OFMD is """homophobic""" or some other such tripe is "I'm an ungrateful twat who doesn't know anything about how bad shit used to be for the LGBT community"

still not over how a bunch of physically, visibly disabled people with ambulation-limiting disabilities were upset about how THE ONLY character in OFMD with a canonical physical, visible, ambulation-limiting disability, whose ARC revolved around his disability, was treated by the narrative of this so-called 'kind' comedy
(i.e., going from hating his disability and feeling suicidal, to accepting himself and learning to love himself again with the help of his support network and a new mobility aid... then dying in a ridiculous way while saying he 'wanted to go' and undoing all that amazing growth, while a bunch of fans and the showrunner said this was just 'the natural end to his arc' and 'it just felt right')
and a bunch of you were like 'ACTUALLY you don't get to criticise this because one other character lost his finger once and this other actor has a small facial difference, and a lot of people in this fandom have headcanons, confirmed by neither canon nor Word of God, about other characters having invisible disabilities! And invisible disabilities are just as important!' (true! I have plenty, as well as visible ones!) 'and you are actually being ABLEIST by not being satisfied with the disability rep in this show, because all disabilities are exactly the same and should be treated as such!' (absolute bullshit)
Like, until you learn that disability is not a monolith, disabled rep should also not be a monolith, people with visible disabilities do not have some sort of fucking 'privilege' over people with invisible disabilities, complaints about how one disabled character was treated cannot magically be wiped away by saying 'but I think this other character has an invisible disability and HE lived, so maybe you're the ableist one!', and that headcanons =/= disability rep, I really don't think you should participate in these conversations. :)
As always, able-bodied people can reblog, but don't participate in the convo unless you're offering support.

I feel for the Izzy fans, I really do. It sucks to have your favorite character killed off, especially when you feel like their death serves no narrative purpose. It genuinely hurts to lose a character that you identify closely with, and it's okay to be sad and grieve. The character might not be real, but the grief is. Let people mourn. Don't be rude to the ones who are just being sad in their little corners of the internet, yeah?
That said.
Some of the stuff I've seen in the OFMD fandom today? Worst shit I've seen in a fandom that I love and care about, and grief is no excuse. I know I'm a no one in this fandom and I'm mostly typing into a void, but I've got to get some things out:
The show doesn't deserve to be canceled. None of the creators, producers, or writers deserve to be canceled. Nothing queerphobic, homophobic, or ableist happened.
Izzy's death was not an insult or a cruelty or a targeted attack.
David Jenkins and the rest of the writers did not gaslight and abuse anyone (yeah, those are take I've seen).
It wasn't "objectively" a cheap or meaningless or badly-written death. You can hate it and that's okay, but that's still subjective!
Izzy was not the main character or the "heart" of the show. The heart of the show -- the show itself -- is Ed and Stede's relationship. We have been told as much.
"Ed hasn't faced any consequences for his actions." He has though? He didn't gaslight girlboss his way back into everyone's hearts. Izzy is not Ed's hapless and helpless victim. He was almost beaten to death and ran around in a penitence onesie with a catbell on; I think those were consequences.
"How do you feel when gay characters are randomly killed off to help a straight couple progress their narrative? Not good, huh? That's how disabled fans feel." It's okay to feel that way, but don't make any sweeping assumptions about disabled fans. I'm disabled and I'm gonna say that's not what happened here.
"How dare you kill off this character who's abused, flawed, suicidal, disabled, and queer!" Ed is still right over there, yeah? Check, check, check, check, and check. (Little note: I've seen a lot of "he's not disabled!" Even if you don't buy the kneebrace ((Ed Teach with bad joints is so important to me, shhh)), what about invisible disabilities? What about mental health issues? I'm not here to diagnose a fictional character, but it's clear to me that Ed has mental health problems that dramatically impact his life.)
"It's sick that Izzy died in the arms of his abuser apologizing to him." I don't even know where to start with this one, but I get the feeling that some parts of the fandom only consider physical abuse valid. Mental, verbal, and emotional abuse are pretty fucking damaging and I think it's sick that some folks think they aren't actually abuse.
People who enjoyed the last episode of season two aren't media illiterate. People who love Gentlebeard aren't abusive narcissists.
I just.
I really, truly feel for Izzy fans for I too have lost a blorbo. I'm giving a huge hug to the Izzy enjoyers who aren't out there making threats and calling everyone abusers and being outright hostile to anyone who had the nerve to enjoy this season. Like, I genuinely hope you guys are doing okay, and if you need an ear, I'm game.

Ableist Takes from the OFMD Fandom:
High jacking posts about canonical physical disabilities to say their characters with fanon mental illnesses have it worse
Ed’s fanon knee brace is better rep than Izzy’s canonical amputation
Izzy deserved to be mutilated without apology
Actually having a missing finger is more traumatic and painful than missing your leg
It’s actually good writing that Izzy’s prosthetic gave him away as a pirate and led to his death
Mental illnesses can be healed by the power of love
X character with canon disability didn’t have it as bad as x character with fanon mental illness/fanon disability/fanon anything
Personality disorders are hot and sexy actually and don’t need to be treated
People traumatized by someone don’t deserve apologies because that person had a mental illness
Speaking over disabled people when criticizing the poor disability representation in the show
Disabled people deserve to die because they aren’t useful in a pirate setting
Bowel issues, incontinence, IBS, etc are all funny haha poop jokes and people who have them are gross cringe losers
If you’re mean you deserve to be disabled
Antagonist with canon mental illness doesn’t deserve that same level of care as protagonist with canon/fanon mental illness
You need to show your diagnoses before you can be taken seriously criticizing terrible disability representation
Sending anon hate to actual disabled people for liking a character you yourself don’t like
Calling anyone pointing out the canonical treatment of disability in the show as making shit up
Infantilizing anyone with a mental or physical disability
Anyway feel free to add more. Anyone being a weirdo will be blocked I don’t fucking care anymore

Okay so, I made a thread about this over on twitter, and thought I'd drop it here too. OFMD Season 2 spoilers ahead. An idea that I've seen a few times and felt I needed to yell about is the idea that OFMD is now ableist, and that it is wrong to like and enjoy it as a show. As a queer disabled person, it's something that pisses me off so, so much. I'm not going to defend everything that happens in OFMD. But I am going to say that it is one of the best shows I know for showing both a broad range of disabilities, and presenting those disabilities in a largely neutral light. We have multiple amputees, multiple people with chronic pain , multiple characters with mental health issues, and more. We have Pete's speech impediment, Wee John's back, Lucius' finger, Jackie's hand, Ed's mental health, Stede's mental health - and yeah, Izzy's leg. The way that these disabilites are presented is important to me - because they're just another part of the person, not good or bad. There are obviously impacts and things to work through - Ed's mental health being one, Izzy's leg being another - but they ARE worked through. Ed's suicidality - which spans over two entire seasons - is addressed. So is the moments of Izzy's. Izzy gets support and a prosthetic, Lucius gets support and a prosthetic, we see Wee John sitting down in most scenes which would support his back. Disability isn't just ignored, or played off for laughs, but neither is it made the entire plot point. Izzy is just as much of a badass as before. Lucius' finger doesn't stop his work. Jackie's hand doesn't make her less fearsome. Ed's mental health (and Izzy's, and Stede's) don't make them less deserving of love. None of the character's disabilities do. In fact, we see two disabled characters - Lucius and Pete - getting married at the end of the season. And that's important. It's so important!!
If you're sad and upset that Izzy died, that's incredibly valid. But to say that it "shows that disabled characters have nothing to live for" - when his death wasn't related to his disability at all - is so incredibly offensive. I am permanently disabled, to the point that I cannot work full time. I have seen posts about my disability saying that it would be better to die than to have it. But nothing - NOTHING - in OFMD suggests that it would've been better for Izzy to die than to have an amputation. Instead he is supported, encouraged, and loved. He is given a carefully crafted prosthetic, and given space to learn how to use it. He gets support, and his mental health improves. He is given a beautiful life. And then he dies. But his death is not about his disability. I'm going to repeat that - his death is NOT about his disability. Nor is it about being queer. It's shitty, random luck. I'm sure there are people who are going to say that the writers, simply by having a disabled queer character die, are ableist and queerphobic. But nothing we see in the show supports that. They show queer joy and delight and love and happy endings over and over again. They show care and support of disabilities, over and over again. And they specifically show queer disabled people living beautiful lives, over and over again. One character's death doesn't undo that. I'm sorry that your favourite character died. I really, truly am. It's a devastating feeling. I'm sorry that it hurts. But if you're taking it as a sign that the show is saying queer disabled people have no right to live? Then you're ignoring the rest of the show.
You're ignoring all the beautiful queer disabled characters we see, and the messages that the show tells us about them. You're ignoring the beautiful life and redemption that Izzy got. And yeah, you're being offensive as hell to queer disabled people. Sorry, you are.
And if you're queer and disabled and can't see a queer disabled character die - that's incredibly valid. I understand. However, that doesn't mean the show or writers hate you, or hates us, or wants you to die. They've shown us over and over again that actually, they love us.
Also - would you be this pissed if it was any other disabled character who died? Probably not.
I think it's also really important to have stories where disabled people are treated like people. And yeah, that means that sometimes we die. Because that happens in life, too. Same with queer people.
I don't really have a satisfying conclusion to this. I'm just queer and disabled, and really tired of seeing it said that it's now morally wrong to like this show. It's not. I'm queer, disabled, and I see more disability pride and support in this show than most others.
So yeah, thank you to OFMD for beautiful representations of disability, and queerness. It's a show that makes me feel seen - and that's really important.

If I'd watched OFMD but never encountered the fandom, and you told me there was controversy over Izzy's s2 plotline being ableist, I would have assumed it was about the fact that he takes a life-changing mobility-limiting injury and the show doesn't delve into its effects on his life in any remotely serious way and it's portrayed as magically fixed by giving him a homemade wooden prosthetic which immediately allows him to return to his previous life (in a job that relies heavily on a high level of physical mobility!) with no ongoing problems of any kind.
The idea that it's ableist specifically because he had a deep, serious plotline about recovering from disability and therefore it's ableist to kill him off at the end of it would never in a million years have occurred to me. That did not happen! The EXACT OPPOSITE of that happened! You are getting mad about a plotline you fully made up!

People being all "Ed is just an emo babygirl after a breakup, like, who wouldn't act like that???" and yeah I LOVE emo babygirl Ed, but I do not think cutting off someone's toe and feeding it to them is really a sad babygirl action (although you go girlies, he did deserve that)
Jokes aside, though: We are NOT being told anything in specific, and his actions can be interpreted in various ways. Did he go fucking feral, all kraken and shit? Sure, but he also cried when looking at the lighthouse painting later, which tells us he did not really, like, vow to not give in to his emotions again or something.
On the other hand, we ARE explicitly told in canon that Ed is *not* mentally well, and I do not mean it in a bad way. Maybe we, as a fandom, should stop acting like Ed's PTSD and his trauma responses are something bad that we can't work with? Ed has every right to be sad. Ed has every right to be angry. He has every right to be fucking traumatised. And by making him feel those feelings the fanfic writers or fan artists are not necessarily being racist, homophobic or mental-illness-hating. Ed is just human and he has human feelings. People react in all kinds of ways to heartbreak and trauma.
I know we all love babygirl Ed, but keep in mind that woobifying his reaction to Stede leaving him, we are kind of writing off the whole mental health aspect of the character, which, I think, is super important in the show? Going as far as removing this aspect of Ed (and I have seen people who really believe Ed has absolutely zero issues) is kind of building the stupid "we shouldn't talk about mental illness" ableist taboo agenda.
(to read more about masculinity and rage in the context of POC experience, I recommend to dig into what @uselessheretic posts who is definitely better at writing in English than I am and likely more educated on the subject)
There is nothing wrong in wanting a character to be flawed. Flaws make us human
Another point: He is a PIRATE. Most people are not making him violent and angry because he's gay, nor because he's a POC. Most do it because he is a pirate, and if anything, the legendary pirates were generally known to be unhinged. Pirates stabbed people, keelhauled them, burnt whole villages down, traded slaves and r*ped. I know we all love OFMD and our blorbos, but let's not forget who the inspiration behind those characters were. No one does anything wrong by just by saying a pirate character HAS issues with his mental health, anger management or attitude. Some people just give Ed (or Izzy, or Stede, or any character honestly) more of the real-world pirate characteristics.
Yes, it is a comedy show, but in fan works it can become anything - a drama, a horror, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi slasher, whatever the author wants. So I think that people who do not interpret Ed's reaction to the breakup as basically a cutesy american teenager eating ice cream in bed listening to Evanescence are not necessarily wrong and neither do they have bad intentions.

Oh boy! I've been perceived by people as of recent! Time to make an
👍Intro Post👍
(hoping that i got that even lmao)
As a brief introduction that could honestly be given by my bio (but eh who cares):
I'm Wren. I post art sometimes and when I'm not I'm probably just committing acts of tomfoolery or reblogging posts that I find pretty neat. I also have no idea how to do an intro post.
If you've happened to stumble across my tumblr and decided to check out this post, here, have the dni and fandom lists.
DNIs:
homophobes, proshippers, transphobes, ableists, racists, p3d0ph1les, anyone pro-israel, and just overall bigots. (might've forgotten to include a few on the list but y'all probably get the picture)
Fandoms<3:
(in order of current involvement with said fandoms)
1. Homestuck (regrettably)
2. Dungeon Meshi
3. ROTTMNT
4. Gravity Falls
5. Vocaloid (that counts right? [it is specifically hatsune miku lol])
6. Dead Boy Detectives
7. DHMIS
8. OFMD
9. Arcane
10. The Owl House
11. Moominvalley
12. MLP
13. Amphibia
14. Good Omens (only in last because of the ...Situation in the fandom [I have chosen not to interact with the fanbase for the time being])
-there are a lot more that I am most likely forgetting as per usual but I don't feel like trying to remember the rest of them rn-
>On the topic of fandoms I would like to add that if anyone seeing this has a show, book, movie, etc recommendation that they'd like to give I am all ears!
And now the extra details:
Pronouns are he/him.
If you want to call me by a nickname (for the mutuals btw) I also go by Wrennie.

(if any of y'all don't wanna be on this list/r uncomfy just inform me and i'll take u off! :3)
Things I am not comfortable with:
-Anon hate. Obviously.
-Flirting. (non-friendly) I am in a relationship.
-People ignoring the dni list :) It is there for a reason. You have eyes. You most likely can read.
-People reposting my artwork. Reblogs are appreciated, but I'd rather not have it stolen despite not posting much of it on here.
That about sums it all up! If you took the time to read this I applaud you. I probably wouldn't have. If you noticed any mistakes or errors, please point them out and I'll correct them as soon as I can!

Ok hold on there’s something about fandom discourse I’m genuinely confused by. Why do a lot of people see “the toes scene was earned” as an ableist and egregiously condemnable opinion to have? It really didn’t occur to me because there are so many depictions of disabled people in ofmd just being fine and living their normal, fulfilled lives, most of those people amputees. Heck we literally see someone become disabled in an extremely similar way Izzy now is (having a finger on your dominant hand replaced by a hunk of wood is absolutely gonna hinder your ability to perform regular tasks), and the narrative does not once present this as a tragedy.
Like if they do go a different direction with Izzy and explore the hardships of being newly disabled that would be interesting and I’ll welcome that plot line. But as of now it’s just weird to me how justification for literal murder (general example) is pretty common place in fandom but justifying disabling someone is the step too far. Like wouldn’t that at the very least fit into the “*shrug* they’re pirates” vibe from the side of the fandom saying this? Idk why THAT in particular is the ultimate sin where the line is drawn.

Ngl there had better be a season 3 of ofmd tbh because like. At first I thought the finale was cute, but the more I dwelled on it the more I went "wow that was actually ableist as fuck and if they never address that, whether on-screen or from crew members themselves, I will be genuinely angry about it"
Spoilers under the readmore
So like. Izzy's death felt weird to me as soon as I saw it, but I couldn't figure out WHY at first. So I initially kinda glanced over it in favor of being like "awwww Stede and Ed are cute uwu"
But like. For one thing, I think it's kinda shitty how, if I saw it right, they...took off his prosthetic before burying him? As someone who uses a mobility aid (although it's a cane, but still) I could not IMAGINE having an ENTIRE LIMB, one that was a GIFT, be removed FROM MY BODY after my death...just so I could be without it? And have it made into a decorative (and not even symbolic) marker like "yeah here's the basically random and completely self-comforting place we buried him to make OURSELVES feel better, instead of somewhere meaningful to HIM. Also, here's the leg we gave him just to take away when we felt he didn't need it anymore, to show where the rest of him is"
On top of that, his death felt very, like. I dunno, lazy writing? Like they went for shock factor rather than actually have something meaningful? "Let's show this suicidal character growing as a person over the course of like 10 episodes, finally do him some hint of justice since we gave him none before, have him survive a suicide attempt, let him finally be happy...then kill him like three episodes after his suicide attempt." It really feels like a slap in the face to not only the fans who were rooting for him, but to people struggling with their mental health as a whole? It kinda sends a message, at least to me, that suicidal people can only be happy when they die. Which may be true for some, but it felt like...really underhanded and shady. I don't think there were ANY bad intentions, but it was still, in my opinion, a really shitty way to write out the end of Izzy's story. There were a million ways they could have had his death make sense AND have it be thematically consistent AND avoid ableist tropes, and yet...
I dunno. It really felt like they took a disabled, mentally ill character and fucked him over to make way for the canon couple so they could have their happy ending withiut the pining cripple getting in the way. Just like every other show does with its disabled characters. And then to TAKE AWAY his mobility aid? His PROSTHETIC LIMB? And to make it his GRAVE MARKER? I'm not sure if it was intentional, but that really does scream "fuck the disabled" to me. Like the writers deemed Izzy as being unworthy of a dignified end. His death would NOT have been much of an issue if it was treated with respect, as has been the case for other characters, but I feel like it just...wasn't. It feels POINTED
Idk. I'm holding out hope that we get a third season. And, if we do, I'm hoping that Buttons is gonna pull some kind of magic shenanigans that brings Izzy back, and that they address the ableist and anti-recovery bullshit that went on there

anyway my love to all my fellow Disbleds engaged in the thankless job of gently taking the hand of the OFMD fandom and whispering in their ear
'hey..... this show is in fact, objectively ableist in multiple ways on multiple axes......:
:gently pets the hand as they start to shake in fear:
'you are still allowed to like the show. we certainly do! But... and this is the important part..... maybe stop acting like all the disabled people criticising their own representation within the show are Just Overreacting. And think critically about how you talk about canonically disabled characters - especially That One You Hate!'
:strokes little circles over the knuckles:
'I know this is really difficult for you. I know you don't think much about disabled people, or what we face. I know it hurts and it's scary to realise that you are, in fact, encouraging and enabling ableist - and at times eugenicist - rhetoric. But imagine how much worse it is for those of us who are listening to you, and deal with this shit every day. So no, it's not okay to spout shit like 'dying was kinder for this disabled character, actually' or 'he deserved to be traumatically abused to the point where he became permanantly physically disabled because that is a Just Punishment for the crime of :checks notes: being a bit of a cunt', or -
:digs nails into the hand so they can't get away:
'I'm not done. Sit the fuck down. It's also A Wholeass Ableism to say 'I think my fave has a fanon physical disability, so therefore he is equally important rep as a canonically physically disabled character, and you should all like my favourite character instead', or 'mental and/or invisible disability is actually worse than visible physical disability :)', or 'this one character's addictions (which are directly and explicitly linked to him dealing with trauma and painful disability) are Bad And Shameful', or 'haha, what if we relentlessly mocked this character for puking and incontinence'.'
:returns to patting the hand:
'If we can all agree, this fandom would be a much better and kinder place, yes?'

Tumblr media
Okay. At the risk of sounding really petty... I think that you can be critical of OFMD with little to no chance of being called a hater or a racist if you're not being a hater or racist. I would argue that calling the indigenous lead "a homicidal psycho" when he is not shown to be that isn't not racist or hateful.
Tumblr media
Ed is not a psycho who tortures his whole crew for fun.
Tumblr media
Big "Ed needed to be put down like a wild dog" energy.
Tumblr media
No, that is not the message the show was sending.
Tumblr media
Everything else was hate for David Jenkins and disdain for the "GBs" and their cult-like behavior.
Like, girl (gn). Friend. Have you considered that people are calling you a hater and racist because of the things you type? That maybe this is not something that everyone who is critical of OFMD faces? You go on and on about how the show and David Jenkins are abusive, racist, and ableist while grossly misinterpreting everything about Ed's character in season two in a way that feels kinda racist.
For the record, I have nothing against people who just don't like OFMD in a normal way or have actual, substantive, genuine criticisms to offer. Unfortunately, most of the criticism I've seen comes from people who have decided that it's "racist zionist slavetrader yaoi" or people who were obsessed with it up through S2E7, but then decided that the whole thing is morally reprehensible after the final episode dropped. There's nothing to be gained from entertaining people who hate the show without watching it or people who, like this individual from Twitter, demonize Ed in a way that canon absolutely doesn't support.

i'm still shadowbanned so i can't interact with your posts, see my ims or asks, reply to even my own posts, and if it appears i've unfollowed you i have not unfollowed anyone in several weeks, shadowbans fuck with mutual checker and follower lists.
because i'm not more than lurking here because tumblr, but i have to quickly note:
i'm not watching the episode. ever.
i don't know if i'm watching the third season if it gets renewed. i'm too fucking traumatised from previous favourite character deaths, i think it's shitty writing to kill off the disabled character and the character who has just found some happiness after who knows how many years of having not had any of that. while i don't know if i'd call it problematic (ableist or bury your gays), i do think it's shitty, and it definitely is personally triggering to me.
so i'm doing what i did when spn killed off cas: i'm never going to watch the episode.
i'm also going to try harder to not care about ongoing media again. i'm tired. i'm really tired of caring about things and then ending up having to grieve them. i'm not ok. i'm certainly re-jaded to fucking tv shows. i shouldn't have let myself care. every fucking time they fuck you over and you have new trauma and grief.
and don't you fucking dare come tell me "you can't have grief/trauma over a fictional character" i will full on block you.
it's valid if you enjoy the show, i would never tell you not to.
there are major character death scenes in media i have enjoyed, as well. it's ok. just because something hurt me doesn't mean you aren't allowed to like it.
most importantly for this blog. as a rule, i will not allow threads where izzy is dead. even if neither one of us is writing izzy for the thread, i will not allow any threads in the ofmd universe that even refer to izzy being dead. i will add this to my muse specific rules before posting again when i'm out of tumblr jail. obviously this only applies to threads with me, you can write whatever you want with other people. you don't have to content warn tag his death for me either. just don't bring it up on our threads and don't bring it up to me in ooc conversation. thank you.
i feel like my tone is really harsh and cold right now but i'm just trying to. breathe. sending love to you all fellow izzy enjoyers.
