Okay, so here’s the thing….

We are still at a very early point in the narrative of ‘Fionna and Cake’ and therefore at a very early point in Simon’s character arc. It’s pretty clear that “I need to become Ice King again” is not the end point by any meaning of the word. But I am wondering where we’re going to go with this, cause… The series has yet to really tackle how miserable Ice King himself was a lot of the time. And how often he hurt people. 

Like, yes, I was an advent advocates for 'trying to bring back Simon Petrikov was a really really Bad Idea on Betty's part, it was more healthy to focus on making sure Ice King was as happy and healthy and harmless as he could be', but I am also fully aware that he started the show being both extremely lonely and extremely sad and also a serial kidnapper who was very much a danger to those around him. And as much progress as he made during the show, getting Ice King to that point was a very serious struggle with a lot of backslidings and problems.

'Friends Forever' is, for example, an episode that stuck with me for a long time as a really heart-wrenching demonstration how even in that late stage, when he has buddies and people trying to seriously take care of him - Ice King was still very capable of seriously sabotaging his own relationships and hurting others and himself.

And it does make sense narratively that, like, characters like Astrid and Fionna and Cake, all of whom lack the full context of what Ice King's life was like (Fionna and Cake really just saw Simon at his worst and only got snippets of clips of Ice King and since Astrid was born after Humans came to Ooo that means she was also born after the events of ‘Come Along With Me’) all see Simon as a downgrade. Because they really don’t understand how bad Ice King was beforehand. 

And thus is does make sense that with Simon's current mental state, and how he is surrounded lately with these kinda people who never really knew Ice King and don’t really understand how terrible and miserable he could be, and now hearing that his ‘sanity’ just took away magic and whimsy from some else’s whole universe, and how it feels like the actual gods of the multiverse are telling him that he should be Ice King, that he's supposed to be Ice King....

It makes sense that he might start kinda... romanticizing that time in his life again. 

You know, the big thing about the outlook that Betty should’ve accepted Ice King as who he is rather than basically destroy herself to bring Simon back wasn't about whatever Ice King or Simon Petrikov were better or 'cooler' than the other. It was about, like, embracing change. Not obsessing about a past where things were ‘Better’ but seeing what is the best you can do with things as they are. Moving forwards.

And we all know how Simon feels about moving forwards right now…

And obviously that's a pretty bad mindset, even if it's understandable how he got there...

And honestly, if we do explicitly acknowledge that, hey! Ice King’s life was often just as much of a depressive spiral as Simon's is right now! There might be an element of… resignation in Simon’s decision. 

Because Simon's downward spiral since getting cured is not a demonstration that he was better off under the Ice Crown's curse.... But, to him, more a demonstration that he doesn't need the Crown to screw up his own life anymore.

‘Cause as both as Ice King and as good ol’ ‘sane’ Simon Petrikov he is just as capable of being lonely and depressed.

And just as capable of losing his own identity.

And just as capable of pushing his loved ones away and ruining his own life.

And just as capable of becoming a weirdo obsessive.

And just as capable of making little girls cry.

He even started kidnapping people again! That’s the Ice King Classic!

So on some level, maybe Simon is resigned to the fact he’s always going to be SOME sort of screwed up lonely sadman who hurts others. And if that is his fate, he might as well be the screwed up lonely sadman who is mostly oblivious to how sad he really is and can shoot ice from his fingertips. And his arc is going to be about realizing that, whether he is Ice King or Simon Petrikov, healing and change ARE always possible for him.

But we’re gonna have to see where it goes…

Now that we've had some time to process today's announcements, here's a slightly more in-depth breakdown of the three new Adventure Time projects.

HEYO BMO

Heyo BMO will be a preschool show starring BMO. The Animation on Max Twitter account says that it "follows little BMO as he approaches each challenge he faces with his unique brand of enthusiasm and a curiosity to learn and fill his database."

This is the only project of the three for which we have received some promo art so far, which might mean it's the furthest along in development and the most likely to premier first, especially if they used rigged rather than traditional animation as is often the case with preschool shows. This promo art was created by 3D artist Crisppyboat, who has previously worked on a handful of web projects and indie games. I don't think this is the style that the entire show will have, but who knows.

Other people confirmed by Variety to be working on Heyo BMO are Adam Muto, who has been showrunner on everything Adventure Time since season five of the original show, and Ashlyn Anstee, who storyboarded on Obsidian and has written many children's books.

This show is especially interesting given that Adam Muto has often joked about the inevitability of a preschool spinoff of Adventure Time, and now that has finally come to pass while he is presumably still running the show.

SIDE QUESTS

Side Quests will be a "prequel series" to the original Adventure Time, likely meant as a return to the early seasons' storytelling style. It will be mostly episodic rather than serialised, meaning episodes will each tell their own story without much of an overarching plot, and it will target the original show's young demographic. Ice King is confirmed to be returning in this series, but that's about all we know about the plot.

Interestingly, Variety did not attach Adam Muto's name to this project. Instead it mentioned that Nate Cash will be involved. Nate Cash was supervising director on Adventure Time between seasons three and five, often alternating with Adam Muto in that role. So if Nate is producing Side Quests and Adam is producing Heyo BMO, this will be something of a return to form for both of them.

One question that I've seen a few fans ask is who will voice Finn in this show. Jeremy Shada can't really pull off the season one Finn voice anymore, and they've run out of younger Shada brothers to defer to like they did after the pilot episode. So a new casting feels likely to me, with Shada continuing to voice an older Finn in other projects like Fionna and Cake and the movie. Speaking of which...

UNTITLED ADVENTURE TIME MOVIE

This is the announcement that we know the least about. To give some historical context, an Adventure Time movie was announced all the way back in 2015 but never came to anything. There was also allegedly a plan to end season five with a TV movie back in 2014. Elements of these two movies were later recycled into the plots of several later episodes, most notably Something Big, and possibly Distant Lands: Together Again.

This latest attempt involves Adam Muto, as well as Rebecca Sugar and Pat McHale, who were both influential storyboard artists in the early seasons of Adventure Time before leaving to make their own shows; Steven Universe and Over the Garden Wall, respectively.

According to MidouMir on Twitter, who was live-Tweeting the Warner panel at Annecy, a brief synopsis was given as something like "Finn and Jake set out to find a birthday gift for PB but their adventure will lead them to world changing stuff." Other than that we know nothing about the plot.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Adventure Time wasn't the only show to get spinoffs announced today. Regular Show, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, and Scooby-Doo will all be receiving new series too. We don't know anything about the Regular Show spinoff, but the Fosters spinoff will be a preschool show like Heyo BMO.

All of this appears to indicate that Warner's current animation strategy is to recycle characters who have already proven popular in order to try and attract a new generation of viewers. Original fans of Adventure Time are beginning to get old enough to have children of their own who might enjoy something like Heyo BMO, plus since the end of shows like Amphibia and The Owl House there has been a vacuum of popular "fandom" shows for the older children to younger teens demographic, which I imagine is what Side Quests is aiming for.

To be fair they have also announced a handful of brand new projects; Lovey Dovey, Bad Karma, and Barbara are all new shows announced today.

Simon Pretikov x reader (gender neutral) oneshot.

For context: this takes some months after the first season of fionna and cake so Simon is chipper and healing now, still holding onto some habits but hey, baby steps.

     The sound of the old jukebox seems to drown out in the background like white noise fueling the already overwhelming atmosphere of the candy bar. The floor creaks as people walk on and about, washing over the invisible walls you’ve been putting on all evening. Not that anyone usually even talks to you but today you’re somehow even more apprehensive about it all.

     The same old rhythm, you could be painted in the wall for all the world cares, you don’t even bother speaking up to order another round, just tapping on the counter and waiting for the root beer guy to fill it up to your heart’s contempt. 

     Your usual spot in the far corner is taken as the place is unusually crowded tonight much to your dismay. You’re not tipsy, but you’re not that sober either, the familiar weakness in your legs starting to settle. 

     The world seems to lose color for a moment as your mind wanders off, staring at your glass as if it held all the answers to your problems but refuses to speak to you. Mocking you for the ever growing need of relief to your boiling but quiet mind. Is as if your own thoughts are slowly being ripped from your body only to come back stronger.

- Hello?- A small strained voice pulls you back, as if suddenly you had remembered to breathe.

     The old gentleman before you is rocking quite the scholarly look, very…vintage. He waves his hand as if to make sure you’re actually looking at him. His expression is stoic, a little annoyed if anything. He adjusts his glasses before speaking up again.

- I uh, just wondered if the seat was taken…- He glances around momentarily, making sure that indeed, the seat beside you at the barstool is the only one available.

- Um… yeah, sure. Go ahead.

      He hesitates for a moment but ultimately takes the seat, you didn’t mind that much really but you’d be lying if you were to say getting your train of thought, or absence of, stopped so abruptly miffed you just the slightest bit.

     The man is greeted by the bartender as Simon, seemingly being a regular. At that moment, the situation seems vaguely familiar, although you can’t say for sure since you usually don’t pay much attention to your surroundings while drunk… his name rings a distant bell.

     He orders some whiskey on the rocks… with onions?

     “Odd.” is the only thought that comes to you at his choice of drink. Ah… you’re running dry too, when? Who knows, who cares… not you.

     You tap your glass again and almost immediately the bartender refills it, his muddy rootbeer head swaying a little as he slides by and almost immediately walks away to attend the now full bar. As much as you don’t like crowded places you gotta admit that the place looks… more lively than usual, a sentiment the man beside you seems to share.

- Kinda crowded here huh…?-

- … Yeah. It’s packed… not my kind of thing really.-

     The man, Simon shrugs, not that bothered by the situation apparently. He gives his drink a little swirl, the onions mixing in with the dark drink. Your curiosity gets the better of you as your mind attempts to settle.

- Why onions…? If you don’t mind me asking that is…-

- Well, heh, I like the sweetness of it mixed with the whiskey. Gives it a nice aftertaste.- He smiles a little then takes a swig.

- …Okay…-

     The answer leaves you a little dumbfounded but you decide not to question it. After all it’s not as if your own tastes weren’t a little weird. The two of you settle in a little comfortable silence for a couple of minutes. You don’t space out this time tho, your mind a little busy at the “extravagance” of your companion beside you.

- …Say, what are you having tonight?-

- … I… um…- you sigh, gathering your thoughts momentarily.- Bloodshade Moonshine… it’s from the Nightosphere.-

- Really now? Sounds kinda strong..-

     You chuckle, because indeed. It is very strong. A thought comes to mind, a mischievous little thought. You down the remaining watered down drink then order two raw shots.

- Wanna try?- You smirk not really expecting him to accept but-

- S-Sure. Why not, It’s been a while since I tried something new…-

     You cock an eyebrow, genuinely surprised as he doesn’t appear like the type to drink heavily. This only furthers the interest you’ve been gaining towards him. Just who is this old fart and why is he seemingly so nonchalant about it all? 

- Are you sure? You look awfully confident man…-

- Simon. It’s Simon, and don’t worry about me, I can hold my weight.- He appears a little too confident for his own good, nevertheless your drinks are served.

- Okay, be my guest Simon, bottoms up.- You raise your shot at him, silently daring him to follow along.

     He returns the gesture, determination pouring from his eyes. The two of you down the shots at the same time, in a bold sync of sorts. The familiar cold burn in your throat spreads like wildfire, forcing you to take a silent deep breath so as to not choke.

     Simon on the other hand seems to struggle the most, his face contorting in discomfort but his determination to show you off doesn’t falter in the slightest. He gasps a little, taking a moment to adjust at the deep burn in his throat.

- J-Jesus- He can’t help but coff a little, the intensity of it all more than he expected it to be but his resolve is complete as he regains his composure.

- You good man?- A chuckle escapes you, not in a mocking way, more so amused at his failed stubbornness to seem unaffected.

- Y-Yeah, I-I’m fine… It was a little more than I expected tho.- The sheepishness in his voice is apparent as it cracks slightly.

- It’s good tho right?-

- Y-Yeah, it is, it has a metallic aftertaste, a little sweet too. How you drink this regularly is lost on me tho, you don’t even look tipsy?-

- Hey now, I don’t drink it raw like this every day, I water it down with ice or soda, usually ice tho this thing is sweet as is.- You give him a thin but sincere smile.

     He nods and asks for two rounds of his own preferred drink. He looks… kinda cute when blushed like this… even if he is kinda old and maybe a tad gruff. But cute.

     You can’t help but notice how his glasses seem to fog due to the sudden heat in his face and without thinking too hard into it you reach for a handkerchief you keep in your pant’s pocket.

- Here let me take care of those for you…-

- A-Ah… thanks…- He shyly takes off his glasses and hands them to you, a few of his silver strands getting caught on the hinges as he pulls them from his face.- Oww, hate when his happens.-

     You huff a laugh at the face he makes, finding his little out loud thoughts endearing. His face now more visible to you without his glasses on, the wrinkles in his face defined in an oddly elegant way, however old he is… he’s aged well. Attempting to regain focus you start to clean off the fog, making sure they are good enough for use before handing them back to him.

     He mutters a soft “thanks” then puts them back on, being careful of not getting his hair caught on the hinges of them again.

- Better?-

- Mhmm, better, thank you…- He sighs, the smell of alcohol hitting you all of the sudden.- Okay, your turn now.-

- W-What?-

- I tried your drink so now you try mine. It’s only fair don’t you think?- He offers you the second glass the bartender brought, smirking at you a bit.

- Damn, got me there… onions and all?-

- Yeah, onions and all, unless you’re scared?- Maybe it’s the alcohol speaking but you swear he sounds a bit more smug than before.

- A-Alright, alright. You’re on, old man-

     He scoffs at the small jab, not really offended but more so amused at your antics. You seemed so closed off at the beginning of your interaction that this must be a little jarring to him, or so you assume as he is still pretty much a stranger sharing a drink and small games with you.

- For the record I’m not that old, only a thousand and sixty eight years old.- 

- HUH?- You almost choke in your spit as he states so, finding no glimpses of irony or sarcasm in his tone.

- Long story. But the thousand years don’t really count so only sixty eight.-

- …Of course, this is Ooo we’re talking about… Usually mages look different tho so you can’t really blame me for-

- I’m not a mage, well… not anymore.- His expression sombers a little as he states that, so you opt to not push him.

- I see, well sixty eight it is then, and looking good hehe- You attempt to lighten the mood, and before he can answer you interject again.- Okay, onion whiskey it’s you and me, let’s dance.-

     He chuckles, his face flushed from the alcohol, mayhaps something else too. He raises his own glass to you and grins. You return the gesture and clank the glasses together with a “cheers” from the both of you. Your movements mirror each other’s.

      Just like expected, the taste is very… unconventional to say the least. Not bad, just really different from what you had imagined, bitter but not overwhelmingly so, the taste of the onions adding a surprisingly nice aftertaste to it.

- Oh… that was good actually… you were right heh-

- I always am so you better get used to it alright?- He raises an eyebrow, cheeky as ever.

- I wouldn’t mind getting used to this to be honest, you have good taste- the unspoken proposal now up in the air like the lights hanging from the ceiling.

- …Hmmm, sure, why not? As long as we don’t overdo it, having a drinking buddy sounds nice actually…- His tone is sincere, although he is already slurring his speech a bit.

- Okay, Okay then. Wouldn’t want to take you to the Princess Doctor’s ward due to alcohol poisoning, heh…-

- Oh certainly, I’d never hear the end of it if that happened again- I mean… dammit.-

- Oh? Pray to tell?- The half joke is lost in your tone as you speak.

N-nothing too serious, just… I overestimated myself during my daughter’s engagement party, that’s all.- 

     He blushes furthermore at the last bit, clearly embarrassed at the memory. You on the other hand find it absolutely amusing, now even more excited than ever to get to know him further.

FIONNA AND CAKE PLOT PREDICTION TIME BABY

SO I was talking to my pal and with the context of the new image released today, I once again got to pondering what the heck this show could be about.

Here’s some things we know:

Fionna talks about how she feels like life should be magical

Cake has been acting weird lately

The world has been glitching

We see a Cake that’s a normal cat, and a cake like the one we know.

We also know whoever the villain is, they’re trying to erase them from existence.

AND the time room is hinted to be important, even being shown in the title card.

My theory is that I think someone made a wish to remove all magical/post-apocalyptic qualities from Fionna and Cake’s dimension. Once upon a time they were just a gender swapped version of Finn and Jake’s world, and now they’re not. The “glitches” are the little broken pieces left behind.

Everyone’s depressed and feels like something’s missing because something is. Their world was suddenly changed.

Basically, I predict that when they left their dimension, Fionna and Cake broke the spell placed on them, reverting them and their memories to how it was before the wish. And now they’re trying to defeat this villain before they do this to more dimensions. The villain is following them and trying to erase them so they stop their meddling.

This brings me to the photo released today.

This frame looks like it’s in the same episode that we see “Ice Simon” in, as well as the first bit of animation we saw.

In the first photo, we see the same ice cream world again. In the photo with Simon, we see those two new characters skating around the piano.

Based on the premise of the series, it seems like this is an alternate dimension. Perhaps one where Simon and Ice King are the same, and he’s a jolly, fun loving ruler of ice cream and music!

But then why are they there?

Well, if our villain attempted to wipe out magic in Fionna and Cake’s dimension, then who is to say that they won’t do the same in other dimensions?

This dimension could possibly represent everything Fionna and Cake wants, but to an ever greater extreme than classic Ooo does: a world that utterly embraces magic and adventure. So they could be there to protect this dimension from meeting the same fate that their world has.

So, to sum it all up…

Fionna and Cake could be about our titular heroes escaping the demagification from our new Big Bad, while also protecting other dimensions from meeting the same fate. Simon could tag along, but perhaps he will find himself at odds with himself. Will our new villain even turn him against Fionna and Cake? After all, magic and the mushroom war has drastically changed his life, causing him to suffer for over a thousand years.

Is he now prepared to allow other universes to suffer from magic, madness, and sadness the same way he has?

But, who knows.

After all we know next to nothing about this series, and I’m overanalyzing a one-minute trailer.

Round 4, Match 2: August vs. Simon Petrikov

August:

1. “august is the adoptive older brother of hisoka mikage and chikage utsuki. for context, these characters are all spies, and were invited into the organisation by august. (also known as misha sometimes). hisoka is december, and chikage is april! their collective group name in fanon is "gekkagumi."

the first interaction we see of him in game is him adopting hisoka off the street. he was a dying homeless child, and august invited him to join the organisation. at first he declined, but august kept coming back to him until he followed (despite chikage's protests about it) he fed fed hisoka gingerbread, and declared "we're a family now."

chikage was adopted before hisoka, but we only learned more about it later in the story. chikage was living in a "facility" when he runs into august who lives in the organisation.

despite their very harsh life, august really did everything he could to give hisoka and chikage the best life he could. he loved the idea of family, and always encouraged them to celebrate christmas and birthdays, and play games!

august had a cover job where he owned a candy store. despite it just being a cover, august loved it and had a genuine care for the children. he used to give away free sweets to the point his shop was actively going out of business, and whenever he saw a sad kid he'd try his best to cheer them up. people around the town came in just to talk to him, to the point where hisoka said when he was covering the shop for him, the first thing people would ask was "where's misha?"

in his shop, he also used to have a myth that if you wrote a wish on a certain brand of cookie's wrapper, the wish would come true. august spoke excitedly of the wishes kids would wish for.

events in the story lead up to august's untimely death. years later, hisoka runs into a kid who used to go to his shop. this child had wished to be a painter, and was now painting. he actually ended up in possession of a wrapper august wrote on which said "a happy family." however, the boy couldn't read japanese and didn't know what it said. despite that, he held onto the wrapper for years after august's disappearance. he also manages to draw a picture of him from memory. :((”

(‼️UPDATED HUNTRIC FIRST MEETING SCRIPT‼️) (CONTEXT: This is now a flashback minisode script where Hunter and Edric are both in their late thirties and have two kids Lewis(14) and Fionna(12) when Hunter and Edric tell Lewis about their first meeting)

Hunter, and Edric are sitting on the outside couch on the porch, while Fionna is playing with Batric, Lewis comes outside excited to show his dads what he’s been working on.

Lewis: Dad Papa, can you help me for a second I need some help on a few details.

Hunter: of course! Uh, what is the project exactly, you haven’t really told us what it is yet.

Lewis: oh yeah, I’m supposed to write a report on the most inspirational person or people in my life, and I had to go with you two since your story is so beautiful and moving and emotional it’s literally something that came out of one of my romance novels, it’s so interesting and inspiring to me!!

Hunter and Edric are practically in tears they did not expect that kind of response

Edric: *sniff*🥺

Fionna: booooooo I don’t wanna eavesdrop on all this gross sappy romance talk *blegh*

Lewis: Fionnaaaa if you’re gonna be like that then go back inside and watch your creepy clown movie or something-

Fionna: At least that’s entertainment-

Hunter: haha it’s ok Fionna-

Edric: don’t worry Lewi, sometimes kids don’t really care about romance. I didn’t really care about it until I found the romance section in the video store around your age, I think it was something about vampires-

Hunter: anyway, what did you need exactly?

Lewis: Oh yeah, *Lewis places long sheet of paper on the coffee table in front of them* I just wanted to make sure the timeline was correct, was the break up before or after aunt Mittens had the fight with Papa at Eclipse Lake?

Edric: Uh, before, and uh, we actually didn’t first meet when the abomitons were being transported to the old castle.

Lewis: Wait, really??

Hunter: I guess technically that’s when you first asked me out.

Edric: Wow, we really never told you?

Lewis: NO, I can’t believe I never fact checked this…

Hunter: heh, you remember that night?

Edric: How could I forget❤️

Hunter and Edric look over at Lewis, he has a VERY intrigued face.

Edric: You want to hear the story-

Lewis:-YES PLEASE!!

Hunter and Edric both giggle-

Hunter:Grom night, if I remember correctly, I haven’t even met Luz at that point.

Ed runs into a nearby forest, sad cold, and lonley. After a few minutes he sees a flash of red light coming right towards him-

The Golden Guard stops right at his tracks-

Edric is very taken aback, hes only heard of The Golden Guard, hes just never seen him before, he becomes slightly starstruck.

“Sir why are you here this is a dangerous forest, its not safe-“

Edric: Whatever, if the forest is gonna eat me alive let it-

GG: What why??

Edric: …it’d be a lot better then getting your heart broken🥺

GG: How did that even happen, wait what do you mean hearts can break-IS IT CONTAGIOUS??

Edric: what no?? It’s a saying-Ugh why do you even care, no one else would care if I died out here why should you??

Edric seems very intrigued by this information, "oh I can help with that-" The Golden Guard says it all, I dont have time, theres no point, I'm on a mission. "What? The Golden Guard is not aloud to have a little fun?" Edric swiftly takes his hand, and places it on his shoulder, takes the other and holds it high, while he takes his own, and places it on The Golden Guards shoulder, he slightly flinches, but relaxes after they slowly start to dance, Edric can tell hes nervous but decides not to poke fun at him.

After a few misteps, they start to find a rhythm…

"Well aren't you a fast learner" Edric says with a flirty tone...

The Golden Guard giggles slightly-

They danced for what seemed like forever…

Until a beam of light brightens the entire forest, both shocked and confused they stopped dancing, bits of black goo scurry away under them, "What in Titans name was that??" The Golden Guard yells, "is, that bits of Grom??" Ed questions "Gromethius, is here?" says The Golden Guard "not anymore apparently" replies Ed, they both laugh-

After stomping out the rest of grom, The Golden Guard apologizes to Ed having to miss his dance, smiling, Ed replies, "its ok, I had a better one right here..." The Golden Guard quickly turns away flustered and begins fiddling with his staff.

Edric shivers because of the cold, he left his coat with Emira. He then feels the warmth of a white cloak on his sholders, he looks over to see The Golden Guard without his cloak, and showing his pushed back light blonde hair, with only a strand out of place. "What about you?" Edric asks "It's fine, I can request another when I get back-" *peck*💞

Edric kisses the very flustered Golden Guard on the cheek and replies with a soft -

"Thank you…”❤️

GG: "h-happy to help-uh-"

Edric suddenly feels butterflies in his stomach-💞

After a moment of silence Ed suddenly realizes- "WAIT WHATS YOUR-" a flash of red wisps into the night sky, "…name.."

"maybe next time, hopefully" Edric thinks to himself...

Edric starts to hear cheering in the distance, he follows it to see what the commotion is about and sees his little sister and her friend Luz being carried away by many students cheering, Mittens and Luz defeated Grom and are now being carried back to end the night with a fun dance celebration, Ed follows his sister and the crowed back to Hexside, still thinking about what happend.

Emira sees him and very worried starts bombarding him with questions, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, WHY THE FOREST OF ALL PLACES, WHAT WAS THAT LIGHT, WHOS CLOAK IS THAT???- but it all just went in one ear and out the other... everything that just happend was magical, more magic then he could ever conjure. He just walks away in his own mind and replays every second of that dance, a dance he never wants to forget, and he hopes someday, maybe, just maybe, he'll see him again.❤️

Hunter helps Edric open and look through a few until Edric find a small white cloak that would only fit a 16 year old Golden Guard.

Hunter slowly grabs it and holds it up to himself, seeing how much he’s grown, and they both slightly giggle.

Hunter looks down at it, holding the cloak is bringing back memories, some he wishes he didn’t remember. Edric places his hand on Hunters sholder and gives him a look saying “you ok?” Hunter puts the cloak down and hugs Edric tightly. Edric hugs back and strokes Hunters hair to calm him. They start to sway side to side, and begin a small slow dance…❤️

in your opinion. can you watch Fionna and Cake without having seen adventure time? or are they too connected. I know nothing about either but it keeps coming on my dash so I’m curious

Now Fionna and Cake has only had 4 episodes so far, so bear in mind my response to this might not hold up once more come out, but

I've only seen sporadic episodes of the first 4 seasons of adventure time (out of 10) like, a decade ago, and I'm having a pretty good time.

You're gonna be out of the loop of quite a few things, but so far there is context sprinkled in the show through flashbacks and stuff that will help you a little. You wont be able to like, make predictions as well as people with the full context of the show can though obviously.

If that wouldnt damper your enjoyment then i say go for it. I dont think there's anything wrong with starting in the middle of everything. It's like how Star Wars starts with episode IV.

What happened to Marceline in Winter King’s world?

That's a question everyone has been asking themselves since the airing of that episode and even after the finale of Fionna and Cake. Honestly, the contrast between what would've been of Marcy without Simon and Simon without Marcy is really telling of the effect both have on each other’s lives. Despite the tragedy surrounding the crown which destroyed Simon’s mind and forced him to leave Marcy, both saved each other from becoming the worst versions of themselves. But I’m going on tangents, the real focus is Marcy’s fate in the messed-up world of the Winter King.

Now, while we might never have an explicit answer, I think I came close to, in my opinion, the best one, based on information from the show -Marceline and Bubblegum’s story, the Stakes mini-series-, Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook, and even The Winter King episode. And some key elements draw a bigger, clearer picture:

Alright! Let’s start with some obvious context. So, as we know, there are two clashing concepts in this image:

According to the Scrapbook, when Marcy was older, she got the Abadeer axe from his father and she kept it with her which, if you ask me, is both a pragmatic choice due to the dangers of a post-apocalyptic world and an emotional/conflictive one because of her rocky relationship with Hunson Abadeer. Much more important is that in Marcy’s flashbacks on the Stakes mini-series, she was shown with her axe turned into a bass already, playing a song for the human tribe.

Now the question is how it got into the hands of the Ice King if Simon had left her. Well, browsing through YouTube I’ve found a video with a fan’s headcanon* about Marcy’s fate showing Hunson Abadeer giving him the axe and explaining what happened to her. But that comes with more questions: how could Hunson and Ice King have interacted if Ice King forgot about him due to the crown’s madness? What could’ve compelled Hunson or Ice King to talk with each other? After all, in the letter Simon left to Marcy after leaving her, their only interaction was watching each other after he opened the portal to the Nightosphere.

Simon even mentioned in said letter this: “After I completed the binding spell on your dad the portal closed and everything went dark. God knows what I did.” It didn’t mention anything about Hunson attacking him for entering his realm, or stopping him from executing the binding spell; therefore, the chances of an interaction between them are slim next to nonexistent. Of course, we also have this scene:

Here Hunson enters unapologetically and pretty violently into Marcy’s crafted little house and then points at something in particular that was on the wall whether it is the portraits of Simon Marcy had drawn or Hambo, my far-fetched theory is that he wondered about the guy on those portraits but again, this is far-fetched so it doesn't have a solid base to keep going.

What's next? Oh yes, Simon and The Empress’ abusive* past relationship. Why past relationship? Because of this line: “Hello, Simon. (…) Wait, you don't remember me?”. Most importantly, maybe this was the first and only time when Marcy and Simon met again after the heartbreaking departure and she had to confront him in his almost-complete Ice King transformation while saving him from The Empress’ hypnosis. Why almost-complete transformation? Because of this piece of dialogue from the Empress: “He used to have more of a silver fox thing going on, with the hair and those cute glasses.” This can mean two things: one, that Simon still was himself but in tiny bits and pieces both in personality and appearance and a characteristic item of his past self are the glasses. Two, those ‘cute glasses’ might signify something ridiculous and humiliating the Empress manipulated Simon into using while he was still her servant.

Now, it's hard to pinpoint how much time had passed between Marceline and Simon’s separation and their encounter when he was serving the Empress due to the unstable count of time on the Scrapbook but, in my opinion, it must have been like several weeks or a few months. With that in mind, perhaps Simon still remembered Marceline albeit in fragments that came and went which was too painful for her to deal with; for that reason, after she saved him from the Empress, she left.

But after that what was next? Well, the last enemy Marcy must kill to ensure humanity’s survival was the Vampire King, and knowing Finn didn't exist in the Winter King’s universe leaves two possibilities: Marceline dies fighting the Vampire King but is unsuccessful in killing him which leads to him rebuilding his army and slaughtering the survivors. However, how could the vampires still thrive in a world where there were no more humans, only penguins and ice creations from Winter King and the candy people from Bubblegum? That would mean extinction for them unless the Vampire king had led his army to search for more scattered tribes. Going further, with Marcy and all her human friends gone, who could be there to give Ice King the axe bass? I doubt even Hunson could sense something this terrible had happened to Marcy.

The second possibility has a few changes although makes more sense. Marcy manages to kill the Vampire King but dies due to her injuries or because he sets her a trap right before he perishes to get revenge. Then after the whole mess is over, the human tribe she had befriended finds what is left of her: the destroyed axe bass and her stake.

Mourning her, they later find Hambo, Schwabl, and her diary. By reading it, they discover two family members of hers are still alive: Hunson and Simon. Obviously, after suffering attack by attack from the vampires, summoning the “Nameless One” would be the last thing the tribe would do. That and according to her diary, Marcy was mad at Hunson for killing the werewolves and eating her fries. The other option is Simon and that is where it gets interesting. If they believe it’s true that Simon has lost his sanity and memories because of the crown, then trying to find him and tell him what happened to Marcy might be a waste of time and a double tragedy. Also, they don’t know what kind of north Simon had gone to exactly, so trying to find him could take them a lot of time they need to escape the next disaster.

That leaves another two possibilities: the first one I have some doubts about because what if Simon, in his bits of memory and old self, is looking for Marcy and finds out what happened to her? But knowing the crown’s madness is leading him to build an ice kingdom, that is again a farfetched theory. The other one that is riskier but makes more sense to me is that, despite the dangers and the time spent, the human tribe travels to find Simon as a way to honor Marcy’s memory and sacrifice. Once they find him, they tell him what she did for them and give him her axe bass. Despite losing his memories and the crown’s madness, a tiny part of his old self reacts strongly to the news.

It’s unknown what happened to her dog Schwabl and Hambo, maybe they were passed on to Ice Marcy and Schwabl died of old age, or both were taken care of by the child of the human tribe Marcy had befriended to honor her memory. Going into tangents again, about the humans, another reason Finn might not be in this world is because either he wasn’t born in the Winter King’s dimension or he was born but never left the island.

Coming back to where I left it, Ice King transformed due to the most important aspect of the crown: the heart’s deepest truest wish. In the show, his obsession with princesses was due to his desire to be with Betty again and be loved by her, although his wish wasn’t taken that far except for the episode where he stole a piece of each princess’ body to create a Frankenstein-like princess. However, Marcy’s death might have caused his grief to be so strong to battle the madness of the crown and regain some of his memories that were related to when he met and raised her.

Because of that, his biggest wish turned from having Betty again to bringing Marcy back and kind of absolving himself from the guilt of not being there to save her. This is connected to another character’s fate: Princess Bubblegum and the fall of her kingdom. As is shown in The Winter King episode she was turned from this:

Winter King had sang to Simon that thanks to his sheer force of will he had overcome the crown’s influence which in this theory of mine is half-true as his grief had its own sheer force of will that resisted the ice power and madness until Ice King found a way to have Marcy back. Of course, we all know he was unsuccessful, he might have found a way to transfer the madness to Bubblegum, condemning her people to the whims and brutality of an insane ruler, but reviving the dead was impossible. It was even established in the show because neither Margles (Magic Man’s wife) nor Betty (fused with Golb) could come back despite Prismos’ efforts.

Still, it didn’t stop Winter King from trying. I think that after he created Ice Marcy, his denial skyrocketed. Deep down, he knew Marceline was gone and in front of him was just a copy of her when she was a child but he couldn’t accept that leaving her behind to protect her from himself led to her death. He couldn’t accept that despite his best efforts: spell-binding Hunson, the ritual to the Nightosphere, believing she could be strong enough to survive, he would find out time later that she had been taken away from him.

And despite this, he doubled down as he “raised” -if you could call it that- Ice Marcy but also kept her isolated as a way to protect her from the outside world. In many ways, Winter King is what Magic Man would’ve become if he had let his grief overtake him to a new level. His madness indeed came from the loss of his wife and his obsession for bringing her back but after too many failures his efforts focused more on making everyone miserable maybe as a coping mechanism. Not so different from Winter King as he let the Candy Kingdom fall into chaos after transferring the crown’s madness to Bubblegum.

As a last detail in this extensive theory, why Princess Bubblegum? Why not someone else? It could be because Ice King’s former obsession with princesses was still alive and it became more of a means to an end than his feelings for Betty twisted by the crown. And maybe that’s also why Ice King is callous about Betty’s memory and calls her “the dead one”.

*Yes, the past relationship between Simon and The Empress was abusive as she had tried to hypnotize him to have him as a servant, took advantage of his crumbling mental state to make him do things that might be against his wishes or moral code (for example, killing Marceline in the miniseries), was delighted in how pitiful his madness made him look, and insulted him when he defied her orders

I have… so many little thoughts about Simon’s shift in the climax of ‘Prismo the Wishmaster’. He’s so ready to give up, to resign to Death By Interdimensional Beetle Cop. And the thing that pulls him out of it, gets him to see a purpose in his life again, is seeing Fionna cry.

And this moment is so important for Fionna and Cake because this is their first moment to really process the Implications and Consequences of their magical adventure. You know, it’s not just a dream you can wake up from - this is actually a matter of life and death and the fate of their entire world.

And it’s actually, also kinda the same from Simon’s perspective? Even if he was already told they are real and have been real all along a while ago - I think seeing Fionna break out in tears is really the moment where he processed her not as a manifestation of Ice King’s madness, not as yet another way the universe is kicking him when he’s down, not as a cruel joke at his expense. But really actually as people, who need his help.

And, I think about this, also in context with this moment?

Simon Petrikov is… a dad at heart. Simon’s first focus episode in F&C starts with a prologue of him and Marceline surviving in the wasteland. Showing that despite being under much more miserable circumstances

he still seemed to hold himself together far better than present-day Simon. 

Because the need to protect Marcy and keep her happy was giving him purpose and a motivation to hold himself together. 

And this desire to help and nurture and protect is clearly still deep within him. It’s just that now he feels incapable for doing so. In both body-

And spirit -

But now, suddenly, he is once again the Only Person Who Can Help this younger person in distress.

And I think that is a huge part of his motivation to keep on going right now. I mean, just look at how quickly he goes from dismissing Fionna and Cake - into basically declaring that he has to protect them. And fully willing to sacrifice his own identity and sanity to bring magic back to their world because he knows it’ll make Fionna and Cake happy. Because the moment he saw Fionna tear up, he basically decided to Adopt her.

And that’s, you know, technically a step forward - but it is a very very imperfect step. 

Like, at the very least he’s not drinking his sorrows away while waiting for death out of pure despair and spite. At least he has a sense of purpose and a reason to open up for others again and bond. And we’ve seen how much this has been a great coping mechanism for pulling himself together through difficult times.

My guess is that after two episodes of only seeing Simon Petrikov at his lowest and very worst - Fionna and Cake are finally going to get an understanding of Simon’s actual positive qualities as his dad-instincts are going to bring them up to the surface again. 

Buuuuuuuut….

You know, tying your sense of self-worth and motivation entirely to how well you can Dad is not particularly healthy in the long run either. And it’s going to cause problems both for Simon and for F&C.

Looking at it from what's best of Simon, for the sake of protecting Fionna and Cake and making them happy by bringing magic and wonder back into their world - Simon is willing to throw himself right into the suffering and trauma that he’s been fearing all this time and has been trying so hard to get away from. I mean, it’s also about how Simon has started to miss being Ice King in a weird twisted way and how he resigned himself to being miserable in general. It’s also about that, but the part that he actually says out loud is that he’s doing this to protect Fionna and Cake.

So that’s, you know, still very Not Good. Simon can’t hang his entire ability to properly function on there being Younger People who need his protection. He can't actually move forwards by trying to relive the Better Times of the Horrible Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland. That's not a sustainable coping mechanism. And it’s an incredibly unhealthy amount of self-sacrifice. 

And on Fionna’s side… she never said she wanted Simon to protect her.

She might want a useful teammate or a helping hand, she might need a friend. But I don’t think she needs a Dad. Simon is surely old enough to be her father (even just counting his age biologically and not the fact he’s 1058 years old) but Fionna’s not a Literal Child like Marcy was. Fionna Campbell is a grown-ass woman in her early 30’s (Finn is 29 years old right now and there was always kinda the implication that Fionna was a bit older than him). 

(And, heck, if she IS the daughter of a gender-flipped Minerva Campbell, she is probably not in the market for a new overprotective dad. She’s fully booked out on that.)

AND while Fionna does not possess full memories of her magical-adventuring-self, she clearly retains some of her fighting and athletic abilities.

Meanwhile Cake is clearly an adult in cat years and is just as much of an insanely powerful shapeshifter as Jake was.

So where does this middle-aged scrawny nerd get off, acting like it’s his job to sacrifice his mind in order to protect them?

And Fionna very much wants to be the hero, she wants to be at the center of the action. It is no coincidence that her own idealized version of Ice King/Simon is a Tuxedo Mask.

Someone who can give her a helping hand and words of encouragement when things get rough - 

But still lets her be the main hero of the story.

And you know, right now Fionna and Cake have not fully processed the implications of Simon choosing to become Ice King… but once they see a bit of who Simon really is at his better moments. Yeah, they’re probably gonna have some objections to the idea that he should throw his entire identity away just for their own sake. 

Back when Simon allowed the Crown to slowly consume him so he could protect Marcy, it felt like a noble sacrifice. It really seemed like he had no other options. But now he has the entire multiverse on his disposal and two serious badasses on his side. Simon has to learn to see the difference between a codependent senseless self-sacrifice and something that will actually help Fionna and Cake.

So if Simon is really going to lean too hard on his Dad aspect, it’s actually going to cause some really big problems down the line. For his own mental well-being, and for Fionna and Cake. It is in a way, a step in the right direction. And I think it’s going to lead to our main trio finally becoming closer and understanding each other - but unless Simon learns to temper himself, it’s going to cause some serious interpersonal conflicts.

At least this is my thoughts about these interactions right now. I know they’ve been really short but I think they’re really full of Meaning and Emotions. But really, we’ll just have to wait and see.

to adventure time post but i genuinely love finn & huntress wizards relationship. its so much more mature than all finns other relationships its like a testament to him growing up. i mean the whole show is because it grew up itself as it went on but like,,, having finn become utterly obsessed with people (bubblegum, FP, susan) and all of it blowing up in his face every time- falling apart, a weird publicity to it all, everyone always knowing what he's going through and having so many opinions on it .

when huntress wizard & finn being a Thing is introduced its literally introduced as something he was doing alone . you know just personally. getting upset when jake tried to treat it like all his other relationships, like a lovesick kid, like it's the gossip of the town. not only that but finn just being casual. when he thinks she's rejecting him he doesnt freak out or break down he just sorts of accepts it and goes to contemplate it on his own. he wasn't even able to find a relationship again until he understood how he hurt phoebe and actually apologized to her. him not wanting to overstep did end up with some beating-around-the-bush miscommunication and they probably wouldn't have ever gotten together if jake hadn't pushed it, but thats also to be expected from two seventeen year olds. them dating is not a Big Deal. if i remember its not even full confirmed for a while, just implied that its common for finn to go hang out and adventure with her sometimes like Jake with Lady. she shows up & spends time at his birthday with all his lifelong friends as if she'd always been there, just part of the group now (not to mention this combined with bubblegum + marceline just suddenly and casually dating during this time and it never being quite covered, because things things just sort of happen. people just grow. its not everyones business.)

and HW is the first person to really emotionally connect with him like that & help him through his issues (helping him take a big step toward recovery after Ferns death) because like... she just likes him. he just likes her. its as simple as that. hes not laying on the floor agonizing over her or writing giddy sappy poetry and they're not boring into each others pasts with a need for information and context. i think how blunt & straightforward HW is also helps with the sheer amount of deception & miscommunication in the past.

and can you fucking believe they find each other in every universe ??? even in farmworld finn grew past his terrible decisions and has a family & even though HW is dead he's made it so no one forgets her & the warmth she brought. Hunter sticks around & helps Fionna without hesitation for what is, again, just a simple liking that she at first doesnt even seem to reciprocate. forgive me for straight up making a this girl character is sooo good for this guy characters development post but they're so sweet it makes me sick what a simple but deep love

god i really liked the ending to fionna and cake... i can't stop thinking about it each time i go back and run it through my mind i pick out different things that they did to set things up. and i'm coming at the show from the perspective of someone who really liked simon as a kid and always found him interesting and also just fucking loves sad men in general so. there's your context. it's a show about him being able to come to terms with the fact that he served a positive role in someone's life but that people and circumstances change and he needs to let things move on and come to terms with how things are in the present and accept the future instead of just living in the past, right. i mean he's living in a goddamn display of how things used to be back in the day.

more than that though there's marceline at the beginning of the show off getting a tattoo which is one of the quintessential "oh, she's not my little girl any more!" parenthood moments. we see the mess that she's in in the star where she didn't learn compassion growing up and is trapped in her toxic doomed yuri spiral. we see the winter king who actively warns simon from creating an ice-betty and yet he made himself an ice-marceline who's forever a child stuck there with him, who melts when he dies. we have the setup and proof that marceline is better off for having known and spent time with simon but proof as well that he needs to be able to let her grow up. (to sidebar with marshall, you can contrast it to his mom who wants to be this big controlling part of his life and... that's honestly why i don't feel mad about marcy not being in the finale.) same with fionna and cake - only by taking them out of his mind and letting them be in their own world and do their own thing without his "protection" and his magic as a crutch are they able to make their world their own and have it canonized. it's him giving up the chase he's been on his whole life with the crown by throwing it into the void and moving on because it doesn't mean anything anymore, there's no purpose in it, it served its time and that time is over now. it's everything with him and betty where you can't change things but you don't regret the time that you spent together. you might change the specifics but you wouldn't change being able to know someone and be in their life.

we can take it meta and say that setting this with fionna and cake is a play to our nostalgia as viewers and that fionna having grown up and become her own person apart from how she was in adventure time the show is doing something similar to us. i think that viewpoint of being in the present and accepting things as they are is something that feels so adventure time to me; in the same breath that itself makes it feel nostalgic. there are so many points in this show where i caught myself thinking "wow, that really felt like what watching adventure time felt like back in school" which i guess could have kind of been the point. being able to see these characters come to some kind of new closure was closure for me.

to be able to hold love in your heart for something or someone that served a time and place in your life but that you've since moved on from or grown away from is healthy and good and not shown nearly as much as i would like! i think it's important. it really made me happy to see that as the angle they decided to go with. everything can have a time and place. and we can move on.

Friend, could you explain to me the newest adventure time stuff? Like the simon/ice king thing, what's the plot/backstory that got revealed? At first I assumed these designs I kept seeing were new characters but then I started seeing art of the simon guy turning into the ice king. It's not a big deal but I'm curious what the context is

Sure! So the Simon thing is actually a plot point from the original show! If you’re like me and your adventure time knowledge was mainly the bumpers on Cartoon Network and covers of Marceline songs, then obviously, that’s not something you’d know because it absolutely hit me out of left field. And uh, goes without saying this whole thing is a massive spoiler for the original show. I’ve tried to keep any Fionna & Cake spoilers out, in case you want to watch that. (You should. You should also watch the original. And the Distant Lands shorts. Join us. You won’t regret it. Just maybe pace yourself and don’t watch it all in four nights like I did lol)

Anyway, to the best of my knowledge, it goes like this! Ice King was once a man named Simon Petrikov. When the world ended because of necromancy atomic bombs (btw the world ended), he survived because he discovered a magical crown. It continues to be the source of his ice magic in the main show, but at the time, when he was still Simon, he tried to keep himself from using it as each time he did, he lost a little more of himself. It’s so fucking tragic and way too goddamn relatable for me and my memory issues to see this man struggling to hold onto what makes him him, to the names of the people he loved or to what happened to them. Ice King in the main show has lost all of that. He doesn’t even know he was Simon. He doesn’t recognize Marceline, the girl he raised in the post-apocalypse and who he wore the crown to protect countless times.

It turns out a big theme of Adventure Time is destroying yourself to save the people you love. Who knew. But you watch the show and it just. keeps. happening. And you’re screaming at the characters to stop, to not make this sacrifice, that it isn’t worth it, that there is some other way. But of course, they do it anyway. Simon becomes the Ice King to protect Marceline, and in the end, loses everything that he was.

AND NOW FOR LORE. For you see, the crown does this for a reason! It is cursed! Throughout the show, Ice King calls his penguin companion and sometimes other characters “Gunther”, which seems like a funny gag for the first few seasons, and then! It turns out that Gunther was the name of the apprentice of the Ice Elemental (Original Ice King) who created the crown in the first place to stop a comet from destroying the Earth. When he couldn’t wear the crown himself, he told his apprentice, who he had consistently belittled and kept in the dark about most magic, to do it instead and make a wish to send the comet away.

Gunther wishes to become the Ice King instead. And now, anyone, including a Finn the Human of an alternate timeline where he got the crown, will be corrupted into Gunther’s idea of the Ice King, with a little of the original person’s identity left to shape the new person they become with the crown. (Also interesting and probably just a shortcut for time in the episode, is that alternate Finn corrupts very quickly whereas Simon fights the crown for years. I just think it’s fascinating that Simon could do that! He’s just some guy!!! But he resisted turning into the Ice King for so long!!! He faltered eventually, sure, but it’s still impressive!!!)

So, main show, we’ve got the Ice King, once Simon Petrikov, and he runs around kidnapping princess and making a nuisance of himself (until the rest of the cast befriends him once they learn about what happened to him. There’s a moment in the Elementals series of the original show where Finn calls the Ice King “Simon” for i think the first time? And the Ice King doesn’t know who that is, but Finn still calls him by his real name, something s1 Finn would never have done even if he knew it, and it’s!!! that scene makes my heart melt, it’s so small but it’s!!! yes! character growth for my boy and recognition of his tragedy for my old man!!!)

But why does he kidnap princesses? Where did this fixation come from? Well, when he first found the crown, he was dating a woman named Betty. His princess. Fionna & Cake goes deeper into their relationship, so I won’t spoil beyond where the original show goes. When he puts the crown on for the first time, he loses it, scaring her away when the crown takes over his mind and he shoots ice everywhere. Far in the future, a currently depowered Simon creates a time portal in order to just apologize to her, because he never saw her again after this incident. And why didn’t he see her again? Because, crazy insane fantastic woman that she is, she jumps THROUGH HIS TIME PORTAL. Betty then joins the main show’s timeline, spending the rest of the series trying to find a cure for the crown’s curse.

And. I reiterate, spoilers now for the AT finale, which is. so good. god i cried multiple times during it. that may have been the sleep deprivation though.

Betty’s last hope to save Simon is an ancient god of chaos they used to study together called GOLB. At this point, magic has begun to corrupt her too, due to shenanigans with the Magic man turned Normal man from Mars. (it’s a whole thing) and she’s desperate! In the victory of the Candy Kingdom over Bubblegum’s evil uncle (unrelated to the Ice King plotline, don’t worry about it, Bubblegum did some war crimes) Betty summons GOLB. It’s going to destroy the whole world. Eventually, it ends up eating Betty, the Ice King, and Finn. In the process of “digesting” them, it reverts them back to who they were before the magic got to them. Betty becomes normal Betty, Simon becomes Simon, Finn is perfect so he’s fine. The crown also reverts back to it’s precursed state, able to be used for wishing again. Through the power of love and song, Jake the Dog and all their friends create a passage out of GOLB for them to escape through.

Betty stays behind. Because this show is about destroying yourself if it means saving the people you love. And as the walls close in, she wishes for a way to save Simon. She becomes GOLB. GOLBetty. Simon doesn’t turn back into the Ice King. But she can never be changed back. She leaves, and Simon loses her again. But he’s free. After a thousand years, he’s himself.

(The crown is then put on by Gunther the Penguin, who turns into the Ice Thing. Another version of the Ice King, who the gang are still friends with but who the framing device of two friends far in the future learning about the tale of the Candy Kingdom’s war informs us that his happiness couldn’t last forever. Eventually, all the characters die or part ways with him, and the Ice Thing goes back to being a wizard in the mountains causing problems, without even a piece of Simon buried deep within him to help. Because, you know, Adventure Time needs to break your heart even about this little penguin dude.)
