i’m having thoughts about batman vs green arrow, and how the central characters shape the stories their supporting casts are allowed
like, in batman comics, bruce’s story is about being permanently shaped by a grief he can never move on from (his parent’s deaths, and later jason’s death). the premise of batman, bruce’s unyielding dedication to his mission, requires that bruce always be living in the shadow of his formative trauma, always responding to it. structurally, he can never be allowed to heal (because a happy bruce wayne isn’t batman), which means he can’t really grow. his supporting cast can develop and grow in their own right, but they can’t leave (bc they’re batman characters), so they stay stuck in the same unhealthy dynamics with bruce. this creates a narrative paradigm where positive change rarely sticks, cycles aren’t broken, and the easiest story to tell is a tragedy. bruce isn’t allowed a happy ending, so nobody who loves him gets one either.
now compare this with green arrow, where ollie’s stories are so often about having the humility, courage, and determination to take accountability for your mistakes and change for the better. transformative change is his whole deal! it’s the point of the island! and his relationships with his supporting cast reflect this. ollie messes up, he learns from it, and his relationships with other characters develop and improve accordingly. the point of the story is that ollie changes, making change possible for everyone. and so green arrow books present a paradigm where characters are allowed to grow in ways that stick, where harm can be learned from instead of brushed aside, and where happy endings aren’t guaranteed but do largely feel possible. yk?

im not sure if any other people who were raised vegetarian or vegan feel this but i feel like my friends who chose to eat that way on their own have entirely different approaches to it than me. like i can suggest to go get a certain fast food place and someone’s like. ?? they dont have any options?? but hanging out with cousins and friends and being taken to mcdonalds and learning how best to approximate a meal with just sides was a pretty crucial skill to learn as a kid so im not phased at all by there being no vegetarian main dish at a resteraunt. it’s just always, okay, how can i get what i need with just appitizers or sides or what probably would be fine if i just say to skip the bacon bits, yknow? i also dont ‘count’ cross contamination in the way that some people do. oh fast food places tend to fry everything in the same oil? the small businesses do too, but fast food is cheaper and more accesible. If i felt it was breaking my beliefs to eat things cooked on the same grill as meat.. i shouldnt eat out then. I don’t have control over what happens in the kitchen. If it was an allergen thing i would be more cautious, but im aware im in the minority here, sure i find it a little offputting but its not a dealbreaker. maybe ive learned the tricks after a while or maybe ive become apathetic but with time you tend to relax a lot of the rules and just focus on eating food thats good and gives what you need to get through the day yknow

Thoughts on Purgatory Day 4:
God what a fun day, and yet funnily enough a much more relaxed one.
It's gonna be interesting to see what the ramifications of blue's logout strat are gonna be because it's definitely going to be banned, but, from my understanding, blue used this strat to prove a point: that red's strategy was unfair.
Which is true, or at least I think it was true.
Personally, I feel like it was mostly unfair due to how difficult it used to be to get to global, but I feel like the admins have pretty fairly counteracted that and balanced things with today's introduction of the spawn portals.
Because with red's strat players HAD to physically travel to global and turn in the contracts within at least the last 30 minutes of gameplay. The portals now easily allow other teams to show up and at least put up a good fight, and we actually got to see how effective they are today with cellbit and charlie's assist they pulled for roier. If they had been just slightly quicker, green might've been able to steal back the win.
Which I think brings me to the other potentially unfair part of red's strat that I've seen be brought up which is that it isn't fair for streamers in European timezones/streamers who play earlier. Which is a fair criticism, but honestly I haven't personally been able to think of a way for the admins to balance the contracts around that without either: A) completely changing how contracts work, or B) unfairly punishing later streamers.
I think it's complicated, and I feel like the main thing that's gonna result from today isn't going to be them banning turning in tasks late but instead banning logging out right in front of the global NPCs. Knowing the admins, they'll probably figure out something I hadn't thought of and make the whole thing more fair for everyone.
Competition and lore wise, tomorrow is gonna be really interesting as well. A small alliance might be blooming between red and green and that might have massive ramifications going forward. That and I think (???????) that players might be getting their eggs tomorrow (?????). I know they described a period in which they had to keep them alive and the actual event ends on the 10th so I'm guessing they're arriving tomorrow. If they are, that shit is going to be crazy.
(Side note: It was also a delight to see teams casually hanging out more together today. As much as I enjoy the competition, I missed them all just chilling)
Overall, congrats blue on the win! Cheesy as fuck and they knew it but it was absolutely deserved! They worked their asses off! And green put up a hell of a fight! I hope they get their chance to win as well tomorrow!
