it's so wild how different the culture around shifting is on various social platforms. Like shifttok, shiftblr, and shifttwt are SO different.
the utility they serve is also really different and its interesting to see tbh

watching japanese pokemon openings again and sorta ranking them in my head, and its kinda insane to me that i think the dub openings for bw are consistently better than the originals
#i dont really care for ‘’be an arrow’’ sadly :/ both versions. they both feel very off#like they dont match the animation which doesnt look as great here#i dont like the vocals in ‘’summery slope’’ and the visuals are weirdly underwhelming for a final season#i actually genuinely still love the first op though. the 3d was super cool at the time and the vocals are beautiful#and the pokemon being unveiled as they appeared in the show was really cool#almost mesmerizing even#i started the bw anime before i had the game as a kid bc japan got it first so the anime was my introduction to the unova pokemon#and i remember this opening just hit different in that context bc it really was like i was slowly becoming more familiar with unova#i miss that feeling#its the only japanese opening i like for bw yeah djdjdjjd#the only thing is that it goes on for too long in the show and they run out of pokemon to unveil by like episode 20#but that doesnt hurt its quality on its own#and then you go to the english dub and. yeah theyre all super solid songs#i dont like the first dub op as much as the japanese one but the song is still fantastic#‘’rival destinies’’ has hype vocals and its super fun to listen to. and they did a fine job with selecting clips for it#(since they had literally no footage to work with bc the sub was still using the first op JDJDJDJ#‘’its always you and me’’ is weaker than those two but still a really entertaining song and i do vibe to it when it comes on and the visuals#for both are neat. especially with the shot of N and his sisters at the end#it almost feels like a paradox bc immediately after this the sub put out consistent bangers while the dub kept tripping and falling#echoed voice

yoimiya 2nd story quest ?!?!?!?!
#honestly didn't vibe with the first one that much but lets goooooooo#as a tcg player im ok with the main gimmick being a tcg patch but it would be kinda boring if you're not into that lol but i do hope they ma#make a somewhat compelling story even if the premise of the patch sounds like total crack fic material#also very meh on fontaine 😭#i saw the key visual art for the livestream with like. charlotte. and my first thought was yanfei skin?????#and then i was disappointed. god the designs have not been hitting#i'm also delusional with fontaine bc before i knew it was gonna be france based i really thought the hydro nation would be either ancient ko#korea (to match with ancient china and japan) or maritime southeast asia#and seeing the underwater swimming clip just makes me want that more 😭😭😭😭😭😭#you could make a tropical like coral island or something similar for an underwater region if you used sea/pacific islands god#and maybe fishing would actually be useful in hydro regions bc greater importance to culture or something idk im just saying#like idk when has france been known for its sailing or maritime activities girl#besides like as a product of its empire. which genshin doesn't and won't reference lol#im neutral on steampunk but idk its just the way they've been designing fontaine characters (from the leaks) it isn't hitting idkkkkkkkkk#whatever. delusionally thinking about how genshin phili.ppines or like ancient indo.nesia would be like if they were land of hydro#ramblings!#genshin spoilers#livestream spoilers#liveblog insanity

Stuff from the spam vaults: Art from last year, drawn during a heatwave, while seriously ill.(...most art from 2022 falls into that category tbh.)
December isn't a Cyberpunk 2077 character, but I drew this using a screenshot from the game as a ref, because a) eh sure, the V in question fit a similar visual archetype, b) the Javelina seems like something that December would wanna drive.

I posted about to the LSDLN watch party on my personal instagram, so I'll probably try and salvage whatever is comprehensible out of my ramblings in the morning.

✧ I won’t really write descriptions for these, but see original post tags for explanation/commentary on the song snippet ✧
#I actually don't like this one really but that's fine ghghj#Basically I have a bunch of clips of just me messing around with various real instruments like little door harps and childs instrumnets#like kazoos or little electronic keyboards or etc. So I save a folder of snippets of things that seem interesting#like out of a 35 minute 'I have no idea how to read or actually play music and am just improvising whatever and recording it' session#usually I'll edit it down and just save a few of the most interesting or neat sounding 30 second clips. So that later maybe I could throw#the clip somewhere and sing over it or mix it with another clip or do something else (because of the one song a day challenge thing and me#usually trying to get these done with as little effort/time as possible- I find it helps sometimes to already have part of it done. so if#you're TRULY out of ideas that day it can be like 'well I could always just look through those old kazoo snippets and slap one down and#sing over it or something I guess'' lol.. so this is one of those)#ANYWAY. so I have a folder of little saved snippets#to do that with. I think it was a little out of tune lap harp thing from the bins#I also wanted to make it echoey since it was so slow and mellow sounding but.. eh#I just don't really like the vibe as much. weird to me#Doodly Bo is also a result of the 'slap down short clip and improvise something over it' experiment though and I do actually#like that one so lol.. Some are redeemable. I think I still largely prefer no instruments or other music underneath and just#voice stuff like a capella or choir type music or whatever. But experimenting with actual sounds like drums or piano alongside can be fine#oo. I actually should learn that more since I need to make music for my games and stuff that I'm making and I'm not#going to do like.. low effort experimental choir music as the background for a visual novel lmao#I will have to begrudingly pull out an actual keyboard and maybe even *shudders* use a metronome for once just so#things are even and on beat *tears in eyes. trying not to throw up* ghbhjj#THERE's nothing wrong with it actually lol I just hate the confines of it. I think since music is the Experimental And Goofy hobby for me#I get so used to the Unstructured Play vibe of it where I don't know what I'm doing and some of it sounds like shit and it doesnt#matter because WOOO freedom just mess around do whatever! woooo and so on that when it's time to be serious like 'okay but now#you DO in fact need to try to make a song for real that sounds good and actually follow some sort of structure' its like NOOOOOO :(#alas I have no money so I have to do everything myself. and even if I got money the first thing I would hire people to do for my game would#be ART because i HATE digital art and drawing on a somputer SO much for some reason. THEn leftover money I would hire#people to do music for it. then hire people to do code. and then all I do is the writing (best funnest part) lol. ANYWAY#beepo tag

Looking at your recent commissions, those backgrounds are soo pretty!! Do you have any tips for backgrounds? I always struggle with them :>
aAA many many thanks!!
backgrounds can absolutely be a struggle but they don't have to be! they just require a little more creative planning~!
whether it be a commission or a personal drawing, if I'm building an elaborate art piece i focus on establishing the background First.
the background is the stage for your character! planning the background first will make it easier to tailor the character's actions and how they interact with the environment around them.
planning the background first can be the difference between your character standing awkwardly front and center with the setting going on behind them, or actually participating in their environment.
Tumblr media
if i'm super stumped for background ideas, i browse stock image sites to get inspiration. sometimes it helps to doodle on an image to generate some ideas - kinda like you're playing with JPEGs like dolls.
that said - while i'm pinpointing WHAT i want to draw, i keep the ideas loose. i don't want to focus on the itty-bitty details until i've got the overall aesthetic and layout in mind, as i might get inspired to add something in later!
Tumblr media
THUMBNAILING
if you're planning a big piece it can be helpful to break it down into something bite-sized before you go all in and start lining or painting. these are "thumbnails" - fast little sketches that establish the scene in a way that doesn't consume a lot of time or effort. it's also great as a little perspective exercise as a treat.
here i decided i want to draw a character walking home in a back alley street. with these photo references in mind, i can plan a layout and how the character will act in the scene. is this a candid shot? are they posing cutely? are they looking down at us in a tense way? there are many ideas to be had!
Tumblr media
after you've chosen the layout / vibe for your idea, you can scale up your thumbnail to your preferred canvas size and start fleshing out the details. be sure to keep referring to your reference images to get additional ideas, such as storefronts, items, props etc!
3D MODELS
If you're trying to create a unique environment that photo references simply cannot help you visualize, 3D models exist! This gives you that ability to rotate / scale things for better visualization. Clip Studio has a vast catalogue of 3D models to download For Free that you can fiddle around with. i know there are many 3D builder sites out there as well, though i've never made use of them so i'm afraid i cannot recommend any off the top of my head. hell, you can even use the Sims game to design a setting and go from there!
also if anyone is going to come into my house and say 3D models are cheating: they are not. using a 3D model to better grasp an angle or get a better idea for perspective is not cheating. using 3D models to help plan the environment in your art is not cheating. they are no different than brushes; these are tools made to HELP YOU. use them!
PERSPECTIVE
perspective and angles can make a HUGE difference in the art piece. there's nothing wrong with static long shots! if that's what you want to draw, do it!! there's no right and wrong here!
but if you're finding your work to be a little robotic and stiff, slap an angle in there. consider an overhead view. these same techniques are applied to photography and film! nothing wrong with wide shots, but every once in a while it can help to throw in a dutch angle.
Tumblr media
if there is one note i'd like to leave off on, it's that your backgrounds do not have to be 100% accurate-to-life to be Good. unless realism is something you're really striving for in your style, don't feel compelled to nitpick every brick and leaf in your art. us artists can tend to over-prune our work until our art looks a little bare and soulless. flaws can give your work character, and that's often a lot more appealing than how accurate the scale ratio between background building A and building B are [again, unless you WANT to go for that realistic look then you can fuss over those details all you like].
i hope this helped a little! MY APOLOGIES FOR MAKING IT SO LONG AH
