Wait omg..... Jessica Cruz probably did rifle... my specialized sports knowledge coming in CLUTCH
Okay so I barely practiced and made it to regionals like once so im NOT the expert here but uh headcanoning that Jess did air rifle when she was a teen. Like idk if it would be as part of a team like with a high school (what I'm familiar with) vs like an individual thing vs like a travel/competitive team (it depends on the sitch in her area growing up) but she definitely went to some national matches (probably including JOs/JO quals like i think she was GOOD). I think she probably would have quit competitively following a bad shot at nationals (relatable) along with anxiety about competition (ALSO relatable) but still kept up with shooting casually for fun and relaxation and to hang out with friends etc.
She definitely would have shot smallbore competitively too but I never did that bc I was lazy so idk to much abt it competitively
#and by bad shot i mean a 0#it hurts me to even think abt doing that during a match actually esp at fucking JOs#a girl on my team did that and im sure it was devastating (we never let her live it down after too) but like dang. i feel that pain#im just saying she would vibe sooooooo hard with rifle. like canonically they just said she did it but im talking air in particular#also in the panel they said six which first off. humphries bro thats TOO young ik youre trying to be impressive but youre talking abt rifle#here. if someones let their kid have a gun at 6 theres actually smth wrong with them. and not even a bb or smth wtf#ANYWAYS you guys haveeeee to understand this. jess would go so hard for rifle she would fit right in w every competitive shooter ive ever#met istg-#she would be out there on the porch 35° weather in full gear mid match crying w the rest of us it would be great#wait wait shoutout to the time i had to get smth from my car and there were like 4 ppl out there crying during the middle of standing#like i literally FEEL THAT SO HARD (weve all been there) but also like... awkwarddddddd#4 is an unusually large amount though. normally its like 2 ppl at a time first relay. with more 1st relay ppl crying after than during#gosh rifle omg this is making me miss it#<<<<freshman/sophomore me would kill me for saying this btw. i HATED practicing so bad then omg#OH and Jess would be a kneeling girlie. fave position. why ? bc i said so shut up#no but bc its my favorite position (yes i know its the worst okay. im aware of all the reasons kneelings sucks and why everyone hates it.#but you know what? kneeling hates everyone equally and i respect that) no but uh yeah ✌️✌️✌️✌️#top 10 posts that are 80% jargon and only i care about 😘#anyways this is canon to me now actually#like idc what you say she was down in the trenches (the range) w the rest of us#also ik she almost certainly would have shot paper but in my mind she practices mainly w electronic bc thats what i used (even if its super#uncommon and is only used at the nice ranges) if she was super competitive she would probably have driven to shoot electronic. lets just say#there was a paper nearby and an electronic scoring range a bit farther or smth#anyways yeah#WAIT OMG SHE DEFINITELY MET HER FRIENDS FROM HER BACKSTORY THROUGH RIFLE#and the dating drama too omg rifle drama was INSANE. like i was almost always out of the loop bc i never practiced and didnt have snapchat#but like the drama was INSANE. fucking wild. at least to my nerdy ass self. so her relationship drama makes total sense now okay babe fr#jessica cruz#blah

*A/N this is an interview with Gwen and Harry Styles from my Instagram story that you can read here! This is done as if the interviewer is sitting in their living room asking them questions for a magazine! I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into the Styles marriage!*
Q: Harry what was your first impression of Gwen?
Harry: I thought she was dead at first.
Gwen: That’s so lovely honeybuns. Why don’t you elaborate on that?
Harry: Right well, I was walking down the beach after a few cocktails at this bar I went to a lot in Jamaica and uh...well there was this body just laying in the sand and uhm...I’m not going to lie I did contemplate kicking her when I first approached her.
Gwen: That’s a good first thought process to kick a body you assume is dead.
Harry: Don’t be mean lovey. I’m being honest.
Gwen: Please go on...
Harry: But I didn’t have to kick her or anything because as soon as I kneeled down to like touch her she opened her eyes and gave me this huge smile as if she’d known I was there the whole time and in that very moment I remember going “oh wow”
Gwen: He did in fact say that out loud.
Harry: She was honestly mesmerizing and it had nothing to do with the drinks I’d had before seeing her.
Gwen: I’m sure the booze had nothing to do with it. *pats Harry’s leg*
Harry: So my first impression was “is she dead?” And “wow” does that answer the question?
Gwen: I hope you’re comfortable? This is going to be a while...was that just the first question?
Harry: *rolls eyes*
Q: Did you instantly hit it off?
Gwen: I’d say yes, because after we met on the beach we spent the rest of my time in Jamaica together.
Harry: Yes we hit it off right away. We just sort of had a spark and I just didn’t want to spend time without her if I didn’t have to, honestly I’d never met anyone like her before.
Gwen: He’s still like that.
Harry: It’s true. i don’t like to be away from her if I don’t have to be.
Q: Who made the relationship official and when?
Harry: I did and it was the day my album came out and honestly it wasn’t planned it just sort of happened.
Gwen: He was on FaceTime with me while I finally got to listen to his album and he just kind of blurted out that he loved me.
Harry: Yup. I said “I love you” and she smiled and said it back so naturally I followed that up with “so, can I call you my girlfriend now or is that lame?”
Gwen: And to that of course I told him “sure” ya know super casual.
Harry: That’s us right? The picture of a casual couple.
Gwen: Gucci isn’t casual honeybuns.
Harry: It can be if done properly.
Q: Where do the nicknames honeybuns and love comes from?
Gwen: I mean look at him! He is sweet and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy like a honeybun.
Harry: She’s just always been my lovey? I don’t remember a time where I didn’t call her that.
Gwen: He only calls me other names when he’s upset with me.
Harry: True...but that’s very rare
Q: Gwen did you honestly not know who Harry was when you met him? And was that weird for you Harry?
Gwen: I had heard of him yes, I mean I didn’t live under a rock and I’m from California so the name Harry Styles I’d heard before. But I honestly didn’t know what he looked like before meeting him. I wasn’t a huge One Direction fan and he hadn’t had any solo stuff out yet so I didn’t really see his face anywhere.
Harry: You didn’t like One Direction?
Gwen: Do not start with me. I didn’t say I didn’t like One Direction, I just said I wasn’t a huge fan. There’s a difference. That type of music just wasn’t my thing. But I listen to it now with Vivienne.
Harry: But really it was sort of not weird but refreshing? The fact that this human whom I’ve completely become enamored with has no clue who I am other than what she sees and knows because of things I’ve told her, it was very exciting because it just assured me that she really liked me for the real me and not Harry Styles from One Direction.
Gwen: When I found out that he was this massive superstar it didn’t change anything about him in my eyes. We met in a situation where no one treated him any different than everyone else so it wasn’t until I got back home and told my friends who I had met and what had happened that it all sort of came crashing down that “wow he is like a really big deal huh?”
Harry: I remember being so scared about what was going to happened when she left Jamaica since I still had loads to do with the album and such and I just didn’t want what we had built together to get ruined by like the reality of the real world if that makes sense? I didn’t want her finding out about “Harry Styles” to ruin it all because I really liked her.
Gwen: It makes sense honeybuns. We met in the weirdest of circumstances so that’s a very rational fear to have. But look at us! We’ve come so far!
Harry: So far indeed.
Q: Who is more romantic?
Harry: Gwen.
Gwen: See I was going to say you!
Harry: Me? No way. You leave me those cute little notes in random places that have those little poems on them.
Gwen: Yeah but you send me flowers randomly and will text me in the middle of the day reminding me of random things you love about me.
Harry: So it’s safe to say we are both equally romantic? I will say this though, Gwen knows how to plan a romantic date that would put even the greatest romance movies to shame.
Gwen: I do love a good romantic date.
Q: What’s Harry like in the mornings?
Gwen: Annoyingly cheery.
Harry: Ah love a good morning.
Gwen: Really he is a dream in the morning because me and mornings don’t mix well so he’s quite lovely to have around in the morning. He makes my coffee and sometimes if I’m really in a mood he will put my slippers on my feet for me.
Harry: That happens about four days out of the week lovey...
Gwen: Like I said me and mornings don’t mix well so he’s good to have around.
Harry: *smiles*
Q: Do you think you two have a healthy relationship?
Harry: Uh I mean yes? But I’m not afraid to say I’m a very codependent type human and Gwen is who I have clung to over the past few years but that’s just me being honest.
Gwen: I think we have a healthy relationship. Every couple is different and Harry and I just prefer to be around each other anytime that we can. But that’s what happens when you meet your soulmate.
Harry: I agree lovey. Gwen is literally my human. So if you’ve met your human than you get it? It’s almost painful to be without them. But I don’t think that’s unhealthy? We can go places without each other we just don’t enjoy it as much.
Gwen: I let him go to the grocery store without me. I loathe that place.
Harry: True. She hates it so yes I go there alone once a week and it’s fine.
Q: What’s something a lot of people get wrong about your relationship?
Gwen: That it’s all perfect all the time, like people really think we don’t ever argue and I’m like what? We broke up for like five months at one point. We aren’t perfect.
Harry: Yes people seem to think the two of us are just such a perfect match that we aren’t allowed to disagree or fight. We have disagreements but we are adults so we handle it and move on.
Gwen: He thinks that glitter belongs on everything and I disagree. There is a time and a place for it.
Harry: That time and place is always and on everything. So you see? We are just going to move on now because she knows that’s a hill I am willing to die on.
Gwen: He will defend glitter until his dying breath.
Q: Why did you two break up? Who initiated getting back together?
Harry: I was selfish and assumed Gwen was going to always be okay with having her dreams be on the back burner until I got my career where I wanted it. So naturally she just got tired of it and left, I completely deserved it.
Gwen: I didn’t just leave though. It wasn’t quite that dramatic, we had a long conversation and decided it would be best if I moved out and at that point he had just started all his Gucci campaign stuff so he left for Italy while I moved back into my old place.
Harry: Also I initiated the getting back together process because Gwen knew that I just needed my time to really process what I wanted and that when I was ready I’d find her again.
Gwen: It was all very mutually respectful, I knew what he needed and he also knew that I needed to go and do some things for myself so it wasn’t this big sad emotional thing because I think we both knew we’d end up together it was just a matter of when.
Harry: Oh yeah I knew you’d be mine again I just needed to get my shit together first.
Gwen: Honeybuns! Language...
Harry: Oh right! Sorry...
Q: Was Vivienne planned?
Harry: Yes. Everyone assumes she wasn’t and I think that’s solely because when we announced Gwen was pregnant we weren’t engaged or anything.
Gwen: Harry and I have known we are it for each other since the very beginning so wanting to start a family was a very natural next step for us even though we didn’t have the labels of husband and wife yet.
Harry: Exactly, we’d been together for a while and I kept telling her how our house could use some more heartbeats and not ones that belong to cats.
Gwen: He made it pretty clear he wanted a baby and one night I told him “a baby would be nice” and boom two months later I found out about Vivienne.
Harry: I don’t like to waste time.
Q: How did you two find out about Vivienne?
Gwen: I was tired a lot and that’s very much not my thing.
Harry: She may hate mornings but she isn’t one to lay in bed all day. So we kinda knew something was off.
Gwen: So I went to the doctor and got some blood work done and they came back with a smile on their face and I just knew. I was like “I’m pregnant.” And I cried because I mean I’m carrying a little human! It was very emotional for me.
Harry: So naturally she had to call me to come get her because she wasn’t in any condition to drive and when I got there she was a mess and I could tell by how she was smiling probably the biggest smile I’d ever seen on her face that it was good news and I just started getting all watery eyed myself because being a dad is just... something I’ve wanted for a while.
Gwen: I didn’t get to tell him in some elaborate way, I’m not very big on that type of thing so that whole situation of him having to come get me is very us.
Harry: Yes very us indeed, crying in the middle of a lobby over Vivienne.
Q: What was Harry’s proposal like?
Gwen: Very casual because I was very pregnant and we were laying on the couch and he went to go get my heating pad and I had Lancelot on my hip and Merlin was laying on my feet and when he came back into the living room he laughed and I was “are you laughing at me? Why are you laughing at me?”
Harry: It almost went very bad very quickly because she doesn’t like to be laughed at if she didn’t intentionally do something funny. It hurts her feelings.
Gwen: But anyway he comes in without my heating pad but he has this little box in his hands and then he got down on one knee and leaned over the couch and grabbed my hand and at this point I’m crying and Lancey and Merlin are looking at him like “why are you hurting my mom? I will kill you” because they got very protective of me while I was pregnant.
Harry: I mean it makes sense. You’re their queen...
Gwen: True. But then Harry placed the ring on my middle finger because that’s the only one it would fit at the moment and goes “Please allow me the pleasure of being yours for all eternity? I promise I’ll never stop loving you.” So I said yes and we both cried as usual and it was very sweet.
Harry: Best decision I’ve ever made was asking Gwen to allow me to love her forever.
Q: What was the wedding like?
Harry: It was perfect. It was exactly what we wanted and very small and intimate. Gwen looked like an absolute vision.
Gwen: It was very romantic and not on a beach as everyone assumed it would be. It was very low key and it was just a dream. I loved every moment of it.
Harry: *stares at Gwen with a grin on his face*
Gwen: He’s thinking about it...
Q: How many kids do you want? What do you want next?
Harry: Six
Gwen: He’s been saying six for like a few weeks now but we for sure see ourselves with at least four.
Harry: Why not add two more and make it six? Six is a solid number.
Gwen: I’ll have six if one set is of twins.
Harry: That’s fare lovey, I’d love a set of twins.
Gwen: But as far as what we want next we don’t care. Gender is a social construct that we don’t really abide by.
Harry: We just want healthy children.
Q: Harry have you written any songs about Gwen?
Gwen: Oh yes good question. He doesn’t answer when I ask this and I only truly know of one song.
Harry: Yes I have.
Gwen: What songs?
Harry: That wasn’t the question lovey.
Gwen: *rolls eyes*
Q: How have things changed since you’ve gotten more personal on social media Harry?
Harry: I think people can see a side of me that normally they wouldn’t. I’m still very private with things but Gwen shares a bit more than me and I love that the fans or just anyone who’s interested in our lives can get a little glimpse of what’s really going on. It’s been nice.
Gwen: We are still very private and don’t show certain things, like we didn’t post a picture of Vivienne until we were already safe at home and all that. I love Harry’s fans to death and they for the most part love us as well but I also know not everyone is on our social media out of love for us so I think we have a nice balance of showing the real us while keeping somethings to ourselves.
Harry: I agree. We keep a good balance and it’s been great.
Q: Who is worst at answering texts?
Gwen: Me
Harry: She is the worst.
Gwen: He will text me and I’ll just call him and he’s like “lovey there is a reason I texted instead of calling you..” and he’ll be in a meeting and I’ll feel horrible.
Harry: Happens all the time. She doesn’t like to text.
Q: How do you make your marriage work while Harry’s gone a lot for work?
Harry: We communicate very well. We have routines we do every day while I’m away and it helps tremendously. Also I don’t go away without my girls a lot so we don’t have to do this often.
Gwen: Yes communication is key! We FaceTime about four times a day when he’s gone. But he’s right a lot of the time we go with him. Like if he is filming something or shooting something Vivienne and I will go with but not go to the set until he tells me he’s almost wrapped up for the day then we go over and get to see him do his thing for a bit witch is always fun.
Harry: I just do better when I know my girls are close by. I know that makes me sound so odd but really I’ve said it so many times but I don’t enjoy myself when I don’t have Gwen around and Vivienne well she just lights up my world.
Gwen: Like nobody else?
Harry: Was that a One Direction lyric quote lovey? You do listen!
Gwen: I told you I listen with Vivienne so she can hear her dad in his younger years.
Q: Is there anything you’d like to say to the fans?
Gwen: Thank you for loving my honeybuns and I so much. We adore you all so much and are truly grateful for the opportunities we are given because of how much you love us.
Harry: Yes, thank you so much. I have nothing but an endless amount of love for each and every one of you. Thank you.

“We’re dating each other.” Y/N bursts into my room. “Okay? You’re my date.”
“Who-“
“Byron let me in,” she explains before I could ask my question.
“Why-“
“Long story or short?” She plops herself onto my bed and falls back, grabbing a pillow to scream into.
“Is that the short story?” I chuckle as I go back to folding my laundry.
“Long story it is. So you know how going back home for the holidays is always such a pain because my extended family is a pain in the-”
“Yeah-“ I try to get in but she cuts me off.
“And remember I’m always forced to face my ex-the one I dated for two bloody years and who dumped me for my cousin?”
“You’ve mentioned about a million tim-“
“So this year my mum invited that little bitch to ours for Christmas dinner because her parents are travelling the world or some shite and she has no one for Christmas dinner. But here’s the kicker! Turns out she’s still with my ex and they’re engaged now...”
I listen, amused at how fast Y/N zooms through her story. She’s equal parts angry, stressed, and already convinced I would say yes.
“So in order for me to keep the sliver of respect I still have, and not to look like a complete loser who hasn’t held a steady boyfriend since...well...since him. I need to bring a boyfriend home. I thought about bringing home a girlfriend just to freak everyone out-you know...but none of my friends were up for it. They already look at me weird because I do Youtube for a career but-“
“Y/N,” I push my clothes aside and jump onto the bed to push her down. She goes down with a shout and I kneel over her. “Shut up will you? I’ll bloody come as long as I’m back in London by Sunday.”
“Oh you will. Dinner’s Friday and we’re leaving right after!”
“You’re mad you know that?” I shake my head and she delivers a foot to my stomach. I lose my balance and come crashing down onto the bed beside her.
“You’ll see why I’m so mad when I take you home.” Y/N scrubs her eyes.
“I’ll finally ask your mum if she dropped you on your head as a child,” I say, pushing Y/N’s buttons even more. I get the desired response-a string of swear words before she bounces off the bed.
“Now I have to go look for a dress that’ll make me look uh-mazing,” Y/N pauses by my door. “And I’ll pick you up Friday at 3.”
“Alright,” I sit up in bed. “And Y/N?” She turns to look at me, her cheeks flushed and mind whirring, a million miles away. “I don’t think you’re a complete loser.”
I manage to pull her back to the present as she focuses on what I’d just said. She rolls her eyes and sticks up her middle finger before leaving but not before I see the smile grace her face. I lay back down on the bed with the same smile that she never failed to leave me with.
•••
Y/N and I were complicated but at the same time we weren’t. We’d met on New Year’s a few years back and after a flirty night we somehow decided to stay friends. Somewhere along the way we became inseperable. But sometimes I wondered what would have happened that night if I did work up the courage to kiss her like I wanted, or if I asked her out on a date the next time we met instead of asking her if she wanted to join the boys and I for brunch.
Y/N was fierce to the outside world but I knew the softer side of her. The one she allowed me to see after many vulnerable drunk conversations and road trips we often took alone. She was my partner in crime and I was lucky she’d picked me to talk to that New Year’s Eve.
I sit in the passenger’s seat of Y/N eco friendly car-a spot I was so familiar with the seat probably had an imprint in the shape of my bum. Christmas carols play softly through the stereo but I can’t focus because Y/N continues talking through them.
“So not quite a year but almost,” Y/N tries to get our fake history right.
“How about we say we made it official at last New Year’s so it’s easy to remember?” I suggest.
“Oh you’re genius,” she grins a toothy grin. “Yes-oh by the way Josh was telling me about the costumes you ordered for that video? When’s that happening?”
We get side tracked talking about work and by the time we pull up to Y/N’s childhood home, she’s less anxious but its not completely gone. I manage to get her out of the car and hold her her hand as we get to the front door. Her mum opens, trying to hide her shocked expression at my presence but reassuring me she has plenty of food. Y/N’s younger sister barely spares me a glance from her phone, already decided years ago that I was weird after walking in on Y/N and I trying to eat cupcakes without our hands (in all fairness it was for a video). Her dad welcomes me warmly and we’re all sat in the sitting room when the doorbell rings.
“Oh that’s probably Eve and Jim!” Y/N’s mum gets up to get the door.
“Wonderful,” Y/N glances at me and then says something to her sister which sets her off laughing.
Y/N •••
“Y/N,” my cousin sounds scandalized as she observes Joe. “Is this Joe?”
“Yeah,” Joe’s hand circles my waist answering before I could. “Nice to finally meet you.”
“I didn’t know you two were dating,” she eyes our posture and wraps her hands around Jim’s waist. Her fiance. Gross.
Jim greets Joe wearily and glances at me before deciding to concentrate on the Christmas tree. I’m better off without him, I remind myself. Eve and him were a better couple anyway. I had moved on to better things. He wasn’t even that great.
“Yeah we are,” I find my voice. “Joe and I. We’re...in love! Right?”
“Very much,” Joe smiles at me but his eyes are teasing me so I avoid looking into them in case I start laughing again. He made it very hard to stay serious.
“That’s so cute!” Eve says before moving on to greet my sister. I roll my eyes to Joe before we take our seats which happen to be right across from the vacant seats Eve and Jim were going to take. I’m grateful for Joe who wraps his arms around my shoulders and keeps me comforted until dinner. He knows exactly what to do and say to make it believable, even pecking my cheek when Eve asks our first date story which he pulls out of his arse. He deserved an Oscar. I would tell him after.
Joe •••
“So Jim,” I say halfway into dinner. He didn’t speak much but I wanted to know the guy who was Y/N’s firsts. He didn’t seem much her type but I figured there was more under the surface. “What are the plans for the wedding?”
“It’s a summer wedding,” he says slowly. “I thought autumn would be nice but Eve didn’t want to risk bad weather and whatnot.”
“Not just bad weather,” Eve cuts in and begins detailing her wedding plans which Y/N kicks me under the table for starting.
“You see you two going that way?” Jim asks me after a while as Eve continues to explain to Y/N her bridesmaid dress.
“Y/N and me?” I ask, caught off guard.
“Yeah,” Jim laughs, raising an eyebrow. “I can see the way you two look at each other. And she’s a great girl.”
“Yeah...you would know,” It’s easy to slip in my question. “She’s kind of close lipped about what happened with you two...?”
“Really?” Jim glances at Y/N almost like she scared him. “That doesn’t sound like her.”
“Guess not,” I force a laugh. The truth was Y/N went on many rants about how unreliable men were and I knew that was due to Jim, she’d told me vaguely he broke up with her and started dating Eve a few weeks later. But never the details.
“We were young and-“ Jim hesitates and glances at Y/N and then back to me. “She was always a little intense you know? It was just...a little much for me.”
“I think she’s perfectly intense,” I feel myself getting defensive and Jim catches it too.
“Who’re you calling intense?” Y/N says at the same time, her eyes burning...well...intensely.
“Uhm,” Jim shakes his head. “Just talking to Joe-“
“You.” I say. “I was saying I loved your intensity.” Y/N stares at me suspiciously, trying to read whether I was lying or not. “It’s part of your charm.”
“Y/N’s charm is scaring everyone away,” her sister comments and Eve laughs.
“Shut up idiot,” Y/N stares daggers at her sister but she just shrugs.
“Well it’s sort of true,” Eve gloats. “In secondary everyone eventually stopped hanging out with you because you scared them all away.”
“Or maybe it’s because you always bitched about me to anyone who listened,” Y/N bites back but her voice shakes.
“Language,” Y/N’s dad warns.
“Well hey, I’m still here,” I interrupt and grab Y/N’s hand to hold, hoping to change the subject around.
“Yeah that’s cause you’re...weird. Like Y/N.” Her sister eyes me.
“Hey,” Y/N’s mum scolds everyone but I mouth a thanks to her sister and she rolls her eyes. She looked just like Y/N. “Let’s not have this conversation right now please. Eve your plate’s empty would you like seconds?”
“Yeah Eve,” Y/N spits. “Want some sloppy seconds?”
Eve’s mouth drops and Y/N’s parents scold her as her sister giggles.
“So mature,” Eve crosses her arms. “No reason to stay jealous Y/N.”
“Why would I be jealous of pathetic Jim over here.”
“Y/N!” Her mum scolds.
“Y/N you’re-“ Jim starts.
“Shut up!” Y/N cuts Jim off and I almost feel bad for him. “You don’t deserve to talk. Not to my face, in this house.”
“Well you better get over it,” Eve cuts in. “You’ll be seeing a lot of him since we’re getting married and all. He’ll be around for a while.”
“Lucky for you-no competition-your only other available cousin is underage.”
Y/N’s sister’s jaw drops and the table explodes around us. I figure Y/N had taken it too far but she’s already stomping away before I could reach for her. I leave the noisy table and find her exiting the front door. I grab her jacket and make my way outside.
“Do you still like him?” I ask after I hand her her coat. I don’t know why I ask. But it’s suddenly important for me to know.
“Ew gross, Sugg. I thought you knew me better.” Y/N glares at me.
“I do. I’m just wondering why you’re still upset after all these years. You don’t have feelings for him so-“
“I don’t know!” Y/N turns away from me. “I just hate seeing them together. It just hurts! It reminding me every time I do how I was such an idiot, it reminds me of the shitty time I had in secondary, and how Eve always wins at everything. Even my parents take her side over mine even though they clearly see everything she put me through! Jim dumped me because Eve talked bullshit about me all the time and complained to him constantly. He never minded I was so intense but suddenly he was scared away directly into her arms-“
“So fuck him!” I grab her shoulders.
“I already did!” The words fly out of Y/N’s mouth, and she tries to stay angry but her face cracks and suddenly she’s laughing. “Jesus he lost his v-card in the bedroom above from where he sits. I wonder how Eve feels about that.”
I laugh, relieved that Y/N had run out of her rage.
“Y/N,” I tell her. “You’re not scary or a loser. There’s nothing wrong with your job or you intensity. You’re perfect.”
“Is this where we kiss?” Y/N raises her eyebrow.
“No mistletoe,” I look above us.
She rolls her eyes but I glimpse a smile as she looks down. “Want to walk down to my old school? Where nobody liked me?”
“Yeah,” I button my coat and grab her hand. “I’ll beat up all the fake bullies.”
“You don’t have to hold my hand out here,” she looks down at our clasped hands.
“Keeps us warm,” I kiss her forehead and we’re off. She tells me stories from school and I imagine her here walking these streets as a kid. I finally get the full Y/N story by the time we reach the playground. We pause in front of the front entrance and she gazes up at the building. Suddenly, she turns to me and closes her arms around my shoulders, burying her face into my neck.
“I’m sorry for dragging you all the way out here for this shitshow and wasting your Friday.” She says close to my ear. I ignore the shiver that runs through me and wrap my arms around her waist.
“It was fun,” I tell her. “I liked the look on your cousin’s face when you asked her about your sloppy seconds.”
Y/N giggles into my neck before facing me. She grows serious as she scans my face this closely. “I never actually asked anyone else to be my fake date.”
“Hm.” I let the information sink in. “So you wanted to lure me out here all by myself.”
“Sort of,” a mischevious smile plays on her lips. “You got a history lesson out of it.”
“The only one worth paying attention to,” I say just as she tugs my sleeve and is off running towards the staircase leading into the building. She stops at the side, and stands there with her back against it.
“I never asked anyone to be my fake date because I wanted you by my side,” Y/N watches me intensely as she tells me what I already knew, but her confirmation gives me the only push I needed.
“Well,” I step forward, closing the distance between us and her breath catches as she looks up at me. “It’s good. I wouldn’t have wanted any other fake date to be able to do this.”
I lean down and her eyes are already fluttering close as I press my lips to hers and just like everything about her, it’s intense and passionate and entirely electric.
“Why haven’t we done that sooner,” she asks against my lips when we part but my senses are too jumbled to form a sentence. It didn’t matter we hadn’t done it sooner, I pull her into me to kiss her again, it was perfect the way

It’s a long one, folks just an fyi. Feel free to swap over to the Ao3 link if it’s easiest. And please lemme know if you are liking this story. :)
***
Zethu was still expecting a trap.
She had raised all kinds of hell when the Mandalorian had stated point blank they’d be taking his ship and leaving her’s behind. But in the end she relented. It made a kind of sense she didn’t much feel like arguing over. Two ships were always more noticeable than the one. Besides if the Mandalorian didn’t intend to take her back to Nevarro to claim what’s hers, she could always kill him.
Zethu shifted herself awkwardly into the seat behind the pilot’s chair. Her ribs hurt. Her face hurt. Her bones hurt, but she kept her mouth shut tight. Maybe the bounty hunter was just waiting until they were in deep space before blasting her out the airlock. Maybe he was waiting for her to let her guard down just long enough to slip a vibroblade between her cracked ribs. She fidgeted, hating everything about this entire situation.
The Mandalorian seemed oblivious to Zethu’s distrustful stares boring into the back of his helmet. He took them up and out of Nevarro’s atmosphere and Zethu gave one last mournful look through the viewport at her lovely Lancer. She let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding when they reached the relative quiet of space.
The Mandalorian began punching in the coordinates in the nav computer to make the jump to lightspeed. Zethu braced herself as space warped around them. Normally she enjoyed that initial rush, the flow of energy as light and time distended and contracted. Now all she noticed was how it aggravated her injuries.
She’d be trapped on this ship for at least a day.
No way out.
Something moved against her leg. Zethu jolted and immediately regretted the action, holding her side. She tried to lean forward to see what had brushed against her, seeing one tiny green claw batting at her calf. With one eyebrow raised she reached down and was rewarded with a childish giggle as she held the kid up by the collar of its little brown robe. “Don’t look now, Mando,” Zethu snickered, “but we have ourselves a stowaway.”
Zethu laughed at the double take the Mandalorian immediately performed. “What the—you’re supposed to be with Cara!”
The child offered up what Zethu was certain was an articulate excuse, but alas, it was in baby nonsense. She set the child down on her lap. “Sneaky little bug, aren’t ya?”
“Get down from there.” It was extremely satisfying watching him gesture for the kid to leave Zethu’s lap.
“Aw, I’m not about to hurt the kid.”
“Now,” the Mandalorian clarified.
Balancing itself precariously the kid hopped down from Zethu’s lap, trundling over to the Mandalorian and hopping up onto the console instead. Still chuckling to herself, Zethu cautiously stood up from her chair, stretching out bruised muscles. The Mandalorian was mumbling quietly to the kid, huffing something about “what am I going to do with you?” and “Cara is gonna lose it.”
So she was surprised when he suddenly snapped his attention back to her as she made her way out of the cockpit. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“Uh? Clearly not out into space?” With that she dropped down the ladder into the ship proper.
It wasn’t much. Neither was her ship either if she was being honest. She tapped a few slats and prodded obviously sealed closet and storage spaces. Punching a few buttons revealed a veritable armory. She whistled as she surveyed the blasters before the doors were suddenly shut in her face.
The Manadalorian was at her side, kid swaddled in one arm, the other jabbing accusingly at her. “Don’t touch anything.”
Zethu backed off innocently enough, slumping down and sitting up against the opposite paneling. The kid squirmed out of the Mandalorian’s arms and went toddling back over to her. It seemed to be interested in examining the buckles on her boots. “You know I have no idea why the imps want this little bug. Gonna be honest though, they also failed to tell me I’d be going up against a full blown Mandalorian when I took the job,” she grinned. “After Raydonia I upped my price. They were...not happy.”
“Who do they say you’d be after, then?” he leaned against a crate and even through the helmet Zethu could tell he was watching the kid closely.
Zethu shrugged. “Just some hunter who reneged on a deal. Think they were afraid standard mercs would back out if they knew. You guys do have a bit of a reputation, you know.”
“Still gonna collect?”
“Yup,” Zethu said without a moment’s hesitation. “I also have a bit of a reputation, Mando,” she winked.
“So,” the man crossed his arms, “what’s the plan for Coruscant? I wouldn’t advise going in blasters hot.”
“Hah! Not unless we wanted to get arrested by the Republic. No, I got a little germ of an idea. If your friend’s info was correct and you can get me into the tech center I might be able to draw out Gedos without firing a shot. At least until we get him somewhere more secure.”
She ran a gloved finger down the kids’ long ear. It giggled, wiggling its head and playfully batting at her hand. She didn’t much want to think about Gedos Sal, or what was going to happen on Coruscant.
“The other Offshoots who saw you wanted you dead,” The Mandalorian pointed out. His modulator gave him a similar flat affect to his voice as Zethu’s own once did, but he hadn’t put in any of the regulators she had done to tune the emotion out. She heard his curiosity...tinged with a bit of disgust. Honestly, his judgement of her life was getting tiresome.
“Gedos won’t.”
Your parents would be proud of you. She was eight years old again, dirt-faced and bloodied as she kneeled, bent over in electro-stocks, hands and neck shackled by the sparking blue electricity. Remember you’re the best of them.
“His mistake,” Zethu snapped. “It’s to our advantage. We get him secure, we get him back to Numidian—”
“And then we settle this.”
Zethu stared hard at the tinted visor of the Mandalorian’s helmet. “Yeah. Once and for all.”
***
Din couldn’t remember the last time he had been near Coruscant’s orbit. Flying into the heart of the former Galactic—now Republic—space was not the norm. Sure, hunters made the trip all the time in search of marks and the galaxy’s biggest city had a fairly lucrative underworld, but it was no place for a Mandalorian. He glanced over his shoulder at his reluctant companion and saw Zethu Desh looked equally concerned as she stared hard out the viewport. She probably wouldn’t want to come this close to the Republic either.
The Crimson Dawn operative had called her a terrorist in Arkanian space. It didn’t take a particularly good imagination to wonder what she could have done to be slapped with that crime. Sedition against her own people and murder were the other charges leveled against her. She clearly had little love for her kind. But whatever her flaws at least she fought like a hell of a warrior. He could respect that.
Din brought the Razor Crest in for a landing and his dislike for Coruscant rose tenfold. There were no good hiding places to land out of sight. The massive city rose up before them complete with traffic, skyscraping spires, and neon sign postings. He swore under his breath.
“Head out to the Works,” Zethu mumbled into her hand. Her face was pressed into her palm as she rested facing the viewport.
“The what?”
“Abandoned factory district. ‘S quiet there. We’ll have a bit of a walk towards the city proper but it’s better than paying Coruscant landing prices. Less noticable too. You wanna go east from here.”
Staring at her would not determine if she had an ulterior motive for the landing site, and Din didn’t have another viable solution to refute her. Shrugging, he took her advice and headed east, keeping his altitude as high as he could to avoid possible sensors or trackers. Who knew what the New Republic had installed in the atmo to count incoming ships. He traveled at Zethu’s directions until the skyline leveled and a trail of black smoke entered the sky.
Fire and ash gushed from pipes across the surface and rusted over factories dotted the landscape. Din took the Razor Crest in lower, doing a quick scan and sensing no living heat signatures. In the end, he decided on landing the ship in the shadow of one of the larger factory shells. There was plenty of flat available surface nestled between the abandoned structure and the massive pipes.
“Alright,” Din swiveled in his seat. “You are going to stay here in this time!” He pointed at the child who had once again, despite his insistence, found its way onto Zethu’s lap.
“Sure, keep the kid in the ship on one of the biggest cities ever. It’s not like its known to wander off, right? That sounds like a great idea,” Zethu mocked.
She had a point. He hated that. “I’m not taking the kid into a fight.”
“If we do things right there won’t be much of a fight,” Zethu stood up, gently placing the kid back on the ground. “The little bug’ll be fine. More than I can say for leaving it here on the hope it doesn’t disappear without a trace.”
“Didn’t seem to care for the kid’s well-being when you were trying to blast us out of the sky months ago.”
Zethu only shrugged, a sharp-toothed half grin appearing on her face. “Not trying to do that today, though am I? Honestly, Mando could we try and stay in the moment?” She dropped out of sight down the ladder.
There wasn’t much for it. He gathered his weapons and the child and disembarked. Instantly, Din was glad he hadn’t left the kid behind. The Works were a vast, ashen-covered district with trap after trap for a small womp rat like the kid to get lost in. And it had a terrible habit of trying to sneak out. They’d have to work on that.
Zethu hadn’t been kidding about that walk back to the city. Without a speeder or an air taxi it took the three of them well into the early evening to bridge into the underbelly of the city proper. “How long do you think a work day is here?” Din asked. “Any chance of Gedos still being at the tech centers by the time we could reach them.”
“Fair point,” Zethu shrugged. “Luckily we got plenty of options for a stake out.”
“What? No. I’m getting us a speeder and we’re heading back to the ship.”
“Like hell we are!” Zethu laughed. “I don’t know about you, but I’d rather sleep in a bed.”
“Zethu!” but she was already walking away, hands in pockets. “Zethu!” with another curse he chased after her. “Maybe this will come as a shock to you, but I need to keep a low profile.”
She rolled her eyes at that. “You’re on Coruscant, Mando. No one cares who you are or what you do, or where you came from. Here, you just let me do the talking. And give me the kid.”
“No.”
“Look, I’m not gonna—”
Din drew his blaster and pressed it none-to-gently into ribs he knew were still heavily bandaged. “I said no.”
Zethu batted the blaster away, but backed off, glaring at him and rubbing her chest. “Fine,” she growled and Din heard her curse in Arkanian.
They picked up an airtaxi without an issue, heading in no particular direction, but Zethu seemed to have a vague idea of direction. Din wanted to ask her when the last time she had been on Coruscant had been, but Zethu didn’t seem to be in the sharing mood anymore. And she had been right about one thing, no one seemed to be paying them any serious attention.
His armor caught a few curious glances, but for the most part the city was teeming with folk just trying to reach their destination. Most never even bothered looking up from where they were driving or walking. Zethu continued to steer them on. They rose a few levels in the planetary city, but not too high. Judging from the decor they were still in the seedier underbelly, and that was fine by him.
Din was in danger of getting completely lost but Zethu brought them to a dimly lit hotel where a female Rodian greeted them in her language. As Zethu promised she did the majority of the talking.
“A room for me and my partner, please,” she said.
The Rodian said something that made Zethu laughed. Admittedly his Rodese was a little rusty, but he was positive they were talking about him. “What? No, you think he’s a real Mandalorian? Trust me, friend, you don’t want to know what he had to do to get that armor.”
At the Rodian’s response Zethu reached into her pockets for a handful of credits, sliding an appropriate amount over to the receptionist and, with two fingers, sliding a few extra back. “A tip,” she winked. “We were never here.”
The Rodian responded with a little bow, taking her extra credits. “Hah! Exactly, city’s so big all types of people come this way,” Zethu said with another big smile as she gestured for Din to follow her to the lift.
The minute the doors sealed she let out a breath and the jovial expression on her face melted away. “Rodians are so easy,” she said without malice or much of anything at all. Those colorless eyes held no visible animosity, but there was a hard line around her mouth. All business again.
The lift let them out in a suitably comfortable space. The child, as if sensing they were in a relatively safe area, wriggled free of his grip and wandered into the room, climbing up on one of the two beds. “This’ll do,” Zethu shrugged out of her crimson jacket. “I’d say make yourself comfortable, but I doubt you will.”
Neither was she. She wouldn’t stay still for a moment, checking cabinets, drawers, and thoroughly shaking out the bedsheets. Looking for possible surveillance? Hidden weapons? Probably both given their shady location. “You know I’ve always wondered, do Mandalorians actually sleep with their helmets on?” she sniggered as she finished her sweep.
“While you’re here? Yes.”
“You’re funny, Mando,” Zethu winked as she unlatched the transparisteel screen, leaning out onto the miniscule balcony. The sounds of the city filtered into the room, speeders and hawkers, droid whistles and a steady thrum of music playing in one of the many clubs of the Undercity. “Never really had an excuse to get to know most of my marks before.”
“You seem to know your way around. When was the last time you were planetside?” Din ignored her attempts to rile him up. He meticulously laid out his arsenal on the edge of his own bed, shifting the kid away from the rifle and vibroblades each time it waddled too close.
“Eh...long time. Works good on Coruscant if you can get it and not upset the local mercs, but I prefer living in the Mid to Outer Rim,” Zethu wasn’t looking at him, content to sit herself by the balcony ledge and stare out towards the city.
“Away from the Dominion.”
At that her gaze did snap back to him. She glared hard for a moment, before a little of that anger seemed to slough off as she gave a large sigh and roll of her shoulders. She leaned her head back against the screen. “Yeah. Away from them.”
“A terrorisim charge must make getting bounty work hard,” he counted the rounds of ammunition he still had, hearing Zethu’s hateful laugh.
“You know for some crime syndicates it makes them give me a higher starting offer. When most people hear of you evading the Arkanian Dominion for two whole decades word gets around.”
“When people hear you kill your own without hesitation I imagine that gets around, too.”
“Oh fuck you, Mando.” Din had never heard such malice from the merc before not even prior to their marathon fight. He turned around half expecting to see her ready to fling herself at him, weapons out, but she was still sitting patiently by the balcony, only her face showed the real wrath. Her body was poised and still.
“I got the terrorism charge slapped on when I blew a couple of Adascorp facilities sky-high. Didn’t even know about it until I saw my name show up on someone’s datapad. House Adasca never leaves loose ends, but screw ‘em. Screw the damn Adascacorp, the Dominion, and every. Single. Arkanian, left on that iceball wreck of a planet. You don’t get to judge me, Mando. I was born in a dark, abysmal mineshaft with Arkanian overseers so harsh they wouldn’t even let my own mother off her shift long enough to give birth to me. That’s how much an Offshoot miner’s life is worth where I come from. We were genetically invented to obey and scrap and bow to our Arkanian masters. My parents tried to incite the miners to rebellion. Some great uprising of my Offshoot brethren that would “unite us all” or some absolute spacejunk. All it got was them shot by a firing squad while the rest of “my” people went on like nothing changed. I stole a freighter first chance I got. Should never have let anyone else on it. But some people in my mining crew found out. Said sure, why not. Better than going into the galaxy alone, right? Serves me right. Second we get spotted by Dominion ships half of them are blubbering about maybe we should just head back and ask for forgiveness. I wasn’t going back. So I shot the three who begged. That’s my big crime against my people, Mando. And I’d do it again. Survival is everything. What sins have your Mandalorians committed to stay alive that you get to judge me for mine?”
Din had nothing he could say to that. Zethu’s eyes never shifted from him, never flinched. The wind tousled her silver hair across her face as she shook her head at him, turning to stare back out the window. She took a deep, controlled breath in and it was only then Din saw how tight she had been clenching her fists against her lap.
“I hate this damn planet,” she said quietly, the anger leaving her voice bit by bit so that she sounded smaller...sadder even than Din would have guessed possible. “You can’t see the stars here.”

Let’s Try This Again
August 21, 2017 12:47pm
The dampness of the air lingered on every blade of perfectly shorn grass. The mud and chalk melded into a homelike aroma, welcoming JJ back, as she strolled from her car in flipflops and oversized sunglasses. She wrinkled her nose; those boys were going to be a smelly mess in this heat. As she crossed the football field, she spotted him taking shots at the goal, bouncing the balls at all angles and doing bicycle kicks and generally goofing around. He was in his element, his grin wide across his features, which was understandable; he still believed himself alone.
JJ burst into a comical round of applause as he hit the turf hard, after an overly ambitious kick forced him into something resembling a snowboarding move.
“Need a hand?” JJ peered down as he lay with his chest heaving.
“Nah, I’m good. The grass will bury me by next week.” Luke Alvez waved off her outstretched hand. “What are you doing here Jareau?”
“Had to make sure my boys were on their best behavior,” She kneeled beside him, now lounging on his side.
“So, you’re not checking up on me?” Luke teased, balancing his forearms on his knees, unable to settle the excitement within himself. “Cuz I’d say you have enough to worry about right now.” She leaned back, rubbing her perfect baby belly affectionately. “What’s the countdown to now?”
“29 days, but who’s counting?” JJ glanced down her nose. “Come on, humor me with some drills. I need to move.”
“Whatever you say, boss.” Luke rolled a nearby ball her way before dramatically flipping back upright.
That’s how the students found them, their new coach playing goalie as their overly pregnant coach kept him dodging for every corner of the box with her pristine aim. The upperclassmen suffered through tryouts before school began each year as their games started the second week of September, freshmen rarely made starter squad anyhow. If the boys wanted to learn something about grit, these were the best teachers they could have asked for. Not that teenagers ask for things so freely given.
Friday September 1 10:32am
It was as if no time had passed, they filed into the Delaney Owens Memorial Library with casual conversation spilling over the meeting’s set start time. The faculty of the Frederick Buchanan Institute gathered for their annual staff pop-wow. Penelope Garcia sat straight backed at Headmaster Hotchner’s left as her boyfriend and football coach, Derek Morgan leaned casually beside her, making small talk with veteran math teacher, Jordan Todd.
“Alright, everyone, let’s make it official. Welcome to the new school year, for those of you unable to attend our little development weekend in July, we have two new staff members this Fall.” Hotch gestured to the middle of the table to his right. “Luke? Would you like to introduce yourself?”
Luke nodded and held up his hand in a short wave, “Luke Alvez, your new Foreign Language teacher and interim soccer coach. Originally from the Bronx, played professionally after college and have been teaching in California and most recently the Carolinas for eight years.”
“Thanks, alright, now the other new face. Matt?” Hotch looked to the far end of the table, the statuesque Asian man smiled slyly with only one cheek.
“I’m Matt Simmons. I’m filling in for Coach Jareau’s classes while she is on leave. I am currently taking a leave of absence, myself, as foreign correspondent for Al Jazeera, but before that I was on the D.C. political scene.”
“Oh, the girls are going to eat you boys up!” Mrs. Todd teased the pair of attractive new teachers.
“Jordan.” Hotch chuckled.
“Oh, who am I kidding, this day and age, everyone is going to love you.” She sighed, spinning back to the headmaster in her seat.
“Right, anyway, welcome, to you both. Penelope?” Hotch kept the meeting succinct.
Ms. Garcia squealed quietly as she spun to address the whole faculty. “Friends, teachers, countrymeh- peoples. Hi!” The meeting continued, Penelope and Hotch covering the new schedules and upcoming events. Something in the air felt more relaxed than years past, as if the summer had yet to release the staff of her transfixing spell. They made their way to the cafeteria, Chef David Rossi’s delights tantalizing their noses from halls away.
“I’ve got to be honest, I am surprised Jareau didn’t make it today,” Luke confided to Emily and Hotch.
“I was surprised I got her to stay home,” Emily deadpanned. “I’m sorry about tryouts, she really doesn’t listen to reason.”
“No, it was fine. Besides, kept the guys on their toes, her shooting past me even with that big belly.” Luke smirked, Hotch sighed as Emily’s face fell.
“She was playing?!”
“What?” Luke froze. “Uh, no, not really.” His face a mask of fear and inability to lie. They had arrived to find their meals waiting. Two tables set equally for seven, saving Luke from the awkward explanation, he quickly followed Spencer, who was chatting with Alex and Stephen animatedly.
“Smooth, Alvez.” Derek patted him on the shoulder as Emily stepped passed them, anxiously checking her phone. Matt Simmons was the last one to join his coworkers, Rossi had already served everyone and had sat himself between Kate and Tara. This left the last free seat next to Alex Blake. He slipped between the Drama and Debate teacher and the ever-bubbly Guidance Counselor. “Ladies, how are we doing this afternoon?”
Alex didn’t respond but held his curious gaze as Penelope began excitedly chippering away to his right.
Tuesday Sept. 5 10am
The summer heat hadn’t relented for two weeks, leaving the players exhausted and desperate after only an hour of running drills. The linemen had the field while the quarterbacks and wide receivers were working through their flexibility drills inside. May Howard never wanted to tackle her own teammates as badly as when they were able to walk back into the airconditioned school.
“Submariners! Positions!” Coach Morgan barked from his perch on the sled. “That means you too, Turner!”
Lucas filled in beside May as their hands and heads fell into line across the turf. Their lungs strained as they waited for the starting whistle. Their coach eyed them, leaving the moment lingering; training their reflexes as much as trying their patience. Then the blast, a jolt of force pushed the large metal framework.
“Don’t stop, get it,” Derek pushed his team. “You go until the play ends. You go until their line breaks and then you take them down!”
May hated being shorter than the guys in moments like this, her legs crossing twice as many steps to keep up with theirs. Lucas laughed as the Coach drew out his ending whistle. Their bodies burning hotter than the midday sun.
“Shower up. We hit the playbook tomorrow. Hard.”
12:57pm
Azalene Curtis could not believe this is where they had been enrolled for the new school year. The place was a freaking castle, she gawked out of the driver’s side as pulled up to the parking lot nearest the Rothschild Auditorium. Her little brother, Jackson, was running late for Freshman Orientation and of course she had to be the one to drop him off. Her hair was braided and wrapped around her head to keep its weight back and off her neck. She helped her brother out of his side of the car and walked him to the doors that had been propped open.
“Lena, you can go now.” Jackson grunted, his elbow crutches easily maneuvered over the lip of the door frame.
“Are you sure? This is an old building, make sure you ask for help if there are too many stairs.” She always worried he would be too pig-headed and miss a class, something their parents tended to ignore when it did happen.
“Are you going to be like this all year?”
“What? Looking out for you? Hell yeah, high school is vicious.”
“You said the same thing about middle school.”
“And I was right, wasn’t I?”
“Whatever, loser, see you later.”
“Have fun, Jax!” Lena turned to descend the slightly inclined walking path. A sleek red convertible came to a screeching halt at the sidewalk. A tiny Hispanic girl nearly jumped from the passenger’s seat as her older brother called from the driver’s side.
“Don’t be rude, Rita. It looks bad on all of us!” Ignacio Cruz reprimanded his freshman sister.
“Go to Hell, Iggy. I’m only rude when you make me late!” And she ran past the Curtis siblings as if they weren’t even there.
Wed. Sept. 6  7:31am
“Good morning everybody. My name is Matt Simmons and I will be filling in for Coach Jareau this fall. I know formality is expected here, but I believe in mutual respect. If you can act in an appropriate manner, you get to call me by my first name.” He stood at the front of his first hour Journalism class in a fresh gray button down matched with a black and white paisley tie. He read the crowd easily, from the overly attentive girl in the front row to the completely disinterested guys in the back.
“You’re actually the Matt Simmons.” Sacha Kane took a quick picture of him. “Best first day of school. Ever.” She read her caption to her Instagram post barely beneath her breath.
“Guys? No pictures, this is a classroom.” Matt sighed. “For those of you who don’t know me, I am a reporter with Al Jazeera. I have a bachelor’s degree from NYU and a master’s from GW.”
“You’re also Hannah’s uncle.” Iggy Cruz added from his perch in the last row, attempting to bring the new teacher down a peg.
“That is correct, Hannah Chang is my sister’s daughter.” Matt smiled easily, arrogant senior guys weren’t really that intimidating after reporting in conflict zones for the past ten years. “And your father is on the Board of Regents and Maya here is Mr. Walker’s daughter. It’s really cozy here at F.B.I., isn’t it?”
“We’re all about getting cozy, handsome.” Sacha leaned back, biting her lip.
“Ms. Kane?” Mr. Simmons raised his eyebrows. “Are we going to have a problem?”
She rolled her eyes and sat up straight, his voice switched from sultry to commanding in an instant. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting from his first day teaching, but this certainly hadn’t been it. Mr. Simmons turned down the lights and began his opening presentation. He left the class with reading assignments and to bring in a print media example of a current events opinion piece for the next day.
“Way to piss off the new teacher, Sacha. Since when do we have homework on the first day?” Jake sassed down at his flirtatious classmate on the way to his second period.
“Jakey, come on. He had that ready before I even snapped a pic.” She grinned confidently. “This semester is going to get me past ten thousand followers.”
10:36am
Luke Alvez’s throat hurt from talking during his morning classes. He started the semester with simple conversations, introductions and asking about the students. Second period was the beginners, but most of the teens had some knowledge of the language as their household staff or nannies may have spoken it around them. There was only one crack about tequila or cerveza, which he chalked up as a win. Now that he was done with his long stretch of classes, he realized how early in the day it was to have lunch.
“I feel like I just had breakfast.” Luke admitted as he grabbed his plate from the cart that Rossi had wheeled in to the staff dining hall, before ducking back to the cafeteria.
“You’re telling me, man. But if you don’t eat now, you’re going to regret it.” Derek shared from experience.
“How’s your first day going, teach?” Kate teased as she dug into her perfectly prepared meal.
“Pretty good, all things considered. I guess Penelope was teaching them at the end of last semester, so I can’t really win any popularity contests.”
“Yeah, don’t sweat it, man. My girl has these kids by the heartstrings and their parents by their wallets, but she was not meant to be teaching. Trust me.” Derek Morgan chuckled.
“We’re just glad you’re here now. Let the craziness of last year be left in the past.” Tara added in her comforting voice.
“Funny the history teacher is talking about leaving things in the past,” Alvez chided.
“Oh, watch out, he’s got the comeback.” Derek egged his coworkers on.
They continued like that up until the bell rattled them back to reality. The easy banter hinting that perhaps this team was going to work out while past line ups had left people slipping between the cracks.
3:42pm
Spencer had been to the principal’s office numerous times over his academic career. Usually as the victim of some sort of bullying, the bruises hidden beneath his oversized clothing. Once it was because he had explained something during a biology lesson and his lab partner thought he was sexually harassing her. And another had been because his history teacher deemed him a distraction to other students and he had to remain in the principal’s office for the remainder of the quarter during that class period. The principal promptly retired the following summer.
These experiences were racing through his thoughts as he knocked on Hotch’s office door after the first day of the new school year. Clammy hands betraying his nerves.
“Come in,” the headmaster’s voice genial. “Reid? Everything okay?”
“You tell me,” Spencer didn’t sit but stood with one hand in his pocket to hide the tension it held. “I have fewer classes on my schedule this year and you gave Sociology to a glorified cameraman.”
“Matt Simmons has an undergraduate degree in Sociology, Reid. He is more than qualified to teach an introductory class on it.”
“As do I. In addition to my three doctorates in other fields.”
Hotch eyed the younger man. “Reid! What is this really about?”
“Do you think I can’t handle the course load? Did I somehow lower the standards with a full schedule?”
“Last year I lost two qualified educators, one to a personal vendetta of a student and one to trauma from the hands of another student. I cannot put my faculty at risk of burn out or exhaustion when the very people we are charged with nurturing could, rather poetically, bite the hand that feeds them.”
“This isn’t about my curriculum?”
“No.”
“Or my attempt at a stargazing club?”
“Not at all, though that really was just asking for kids to sneak off and neck.”
“Neck?” Spencer rubbed his absentmindedly, not getting the reference.
“Spencer,” Hotch leaned on his desk top, signaling the science teacher to sit as well. “I purposely gave you a prep period this year. I don’t want you to work yourself sick. We need to all be on our A game. That means accepting a break, even if we think we’re invincible.”
Spencer’s lips curled into a blushing smirk. “Clever word choice, Hotch. Invincible is late Middle English but has Latinate roots; ‘in’ and ‘vincibilis’ respectably.”
“Reid.”
“Sir?”
“I asked a lot of you, and even more so of Penelope, last term. This is my way of trying to remedy that.”
“Oh.” Spencer caught on. “Well, it was my pleasure. Besides, I kind of owed it to her, too.”
“No, you didn’t, but that’s what makes you a great teacher, Reid. You care so deeply, you take on the burdens of other’s growth. Just make sure you’re taking care of yourself too, yeah?”
“Yeah, okay.”
Friday Sept 8 6:12pm
Maya Walker scrambled through loading the dishwasher, causing both her parents to glance between themselves. She had three different chapters to read, a dozen geometry problems to proof out and a trumpet solo to prepare for seating auditions next week. The pressure was starting to sink in. She gave up snapping Meg Callahan and just called her on speaker.
“This is only the first week of the next four years of my life and I am DROWNING, girl.”
“Hey, Maya.” Meg’s voice sounded overly cheerful.
“Did you just answer the phone at the dinner table? Nu-uh, Kate is going to kill you!”
“Rough week? That sucks,” The line became muffled as Meg clearly played on her aunt’s sympathies to get excused early from the family meal. “Okay, I have ten, twelve minutes tops before she is going to call your mom and check on you.”
“You didn’t have to answer, dork!”
“I couldn’t stand it! Chris was doing light saber noises while trying to convince Kit to eat his Brussel sprouts. They’re Brussel sprouts! It is physically impossible to like them until you’re at least twenty-five!”
“Preach!” Maya filled in. “But seriously, I am dying. Do you have homework? Maybe we can hit the bookstore tomorrow or Sunday. I am going to lose it if I am stuck in my room all weekend.”
“It’s the first week of school, I have like one page of Algebra homework.”
“Which could take hours.”
“Mrrrrrrp. Nope, sorry. I can’t draw it out that long.”
“Please? Because you value me as a friend and person?”
“Maya Walker, don’t go begging now!” Meg cackled. “But seriously, I am sorry you have so much work. And I am slightly terrified for next year. Hey, you said you signed up for Journalism, right?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Is Mr. Simmons as hot as Kate is saying he is?”
“Whoa, go Kate!” Maya cheered on the nurse’s taste. “Yes, he is built like a Greek god, with all the ageless beauty of his Asian roots.”
“Ugh, I wish my teachers were hot.”
“Dude!”
“Okay, well, like, not our parents, obviously.”
“I should hope so!” Mara shuddered. “But seriously, Journalism is first hour, he already knows my name and who I am. It’s going to be a long year.”
“Still a great view to wake up for every morning.”
“Whatever, traitor. So no study sesh this weekend?”
“Nah, sorry. I am babysitting and then we have something on Sunday.”
“You owe me!”
“Yeah, yeah, well I better scram. Hugs!”
“Thanks, Meg. Talk later.”
“Yep.”
Maya hung up the phone and fell dramatically into the mound of quilts atop her bed. She was procrastinating, but something about two days and four assignments felt daunting. After twenty minutes on her favorite puzzle game, she gave in. She got out her trumpet and got to work.

Through the Ages
Yona of the Dawn | Akatsuki no Yona
Zeno x Reader - Angst
My Yona of the Dawn x Reader List for more one-shots! Check it out!
Sneaking past the new, strong security of the castle, regrettably having to engage in physical combat once or twice, he was determined to make sure this man was not to make a mockery of Hiryuu's name and ultimate desire for the kingdom. Careful that his hood was covering his familiar face at all times, he searched the grounds for the servants he was forced to abandon. But all he could see were new faces everywhere. It was all becoming a bad dream – nothing was recognisable or what it used to be. He was an alien from another plant.
"Hiryuu... what are they doing..." he whispered to himself in dismay, holding his golden crest. Like a ceremony was being conducted, many people were being tossed out, and many more being pulled in. The new king was not in charge; it more looked like his son had taken on this task. All he could do was watch in the shadows as everyone he came to personally know was roughly thrown out of the castle, and a line of newly recruited servants were registered and put straight to work.
Only young men were accepted into the castle grounds, but by the looks on their faces they seemed to be forced to work against their will. The young yellow dragon's soul ached as he witnessed more and more, the whole process of "out with the old and in with the new" being taken very seriously. Wishing not to be confronted with such a sight any longer, he turned away to leave.
"Wait wait, sir, please!" A young feminine voice yelled out to the soldiers who had begun to close the gates, ending the process of recruitment. "Please, take me in! I can work hard!"
"You're a girl! You can't possibly handle the work of Lord Joo-Nam."
"In my opinion the only place a girl should work is in the kitchen," another one of the guards laughed. Clearly angered, the girl tried to push past the guards to beat the closing doors, yet she was stopped very forcefully. Zeno's anger was growing stronger with every second that ticked by, and hated himself for wishing he could kill such disgusting people. What had him most intrigued was why the young girl wanted to be a servant so badly. Surely she must've not been informed enough on how fierce this ruler really was.
"Please, I need to work!"
"Leave now, or you will be punished!"
"No! I'm not leaving!"
The discrimination was unbearable to withstand. Zeno refused to agree with the soldiers who spoke so lowly to the girl, but on some levels he did. She was so young and had so much to do with her life. He didn't want someone such as her to let herself be dictated for the rest of her life.
But he came to the conclusion that he would help her anyway. He circled around the grounds to reach where the commotion was taking place, and found a heavy, stray rock in the dirt. With the solder dragging her away from the gates, he carefully aimed his throw and hit the soldier right on his helmet, stunning him and causing him to lose his grip on the girl.
She scrambled away from him as she managed to slip through the entrance, too heavy for the guards to reopen to get her back. Zeno, satisfied with his help, retraced his steps to look where the girl pleaded for a job to the employer.
"Who let you in?"
"Please! I know I can work hard if you'll have me!"
"Tch, you're not the type we're looking for. Someone take her out!"
"No, no please! I'll do anything!" The man raised his hand to cease the guards going after her, her words making him think.
"...Anything?" Catching on to his interest, she kneeled on the ground onto her hands and face.
"Absolutely anything. I may not be physically strong, but I am resilient and will obey any order."
"Hmph." The man rose from his seat and sat in front of the girl, forcing her chin upwards so they would meet eye-to-eye. "You'd better mean what you say."
"My word is my bond, sir."
"...It better be, or you'll be thrown out just like the others. Or worse for breaking your word to royalty."
"I-I would expect nothing less, my lord." Zeno's heart skipped a beat at the lord's words. So much threat and venom emanated from his words, he had started to regret giving the girl the opportunity to show her face.
"Tell me your name."
"Uh, (Y-Y/N), your highness."
"Excellent... then I shall appoint you as my Baroness." Gasps resonated like an orchestra throughout the entire castle as the lord's words were practically tattooed onto her body like a book. Zeno didn't like this.
"A Baroness...! Lord Yu-Hon, th-this is..."
"A Baron is-"
"I am well aware what a Baroness is, servant."
"B-But, your majesty!"
"She has practically sworn fealty to me. If she thinks so highly of herself, it would be wrong for any of us to see her as something lower. Isn't that right, (Y/N)?"
He was toying with her. This wasn't generosity, it was all a game to him. His voice was so low and his words had such power behind them that there was no way anyone could refuse his official orders. Zeno had to get her out of there. It was his fault for her getting in, and it was his job to get her out.
"Servants, start cleaning. This place is filthy." All the newly recruited young men instantly sprang into action after waiting for some time to receive their very first order. Afraid of what was to become of them were they to not meet their standards, they split up to get more work done.
"(Y/N), your first job."
"Y-Yes, Lord Yu-Hon?"
"Banish all the priests. Destroy the temple in the castle grounds. They are a threat to my father's authority, and I won't let the kingdom be overruled."
At the mention of priests, Zeno backed away further to hide himself even more in the shadows. He'd been kicked out not long ago after the late King Yak-Shi had passed on – a man who had the utmost respect for Zeno and had full faith in his 'messages' from the heavens. Zeno never spoke word of the fact it was a ruse to keep the kingdom peaceful in absence of his brothers. After the next king was brought in, Zeno was tossed aside without explanation. But now it made sense.
This order was unfair. Ordering (Y/N) to destroy a whole temple and banish priests from the land – even she was having a hard time swallowing. "S-Sir?"
"Is there a problem?"
"N-No, not at all, your majesty! I will see to it as soon as I can."
"Not good enough. This is your first order, and I order you to do it immediately."
"Yes, sire!"
"You. Get her a new attire. She needs to look the part," Yu-Hon pointed to a castle guard.
"Of course, Lord Yu-Hon." He walked over to (Y/N) and lead her by the arm to a room somewhere further away.
Zeno sighed, retreating for the time being. This was going to be harder than he thought. If she was seen with the yellow dragon at all, without a doubt will she be relieved from duty immediately. As well as disposed of for her treason.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Her long dress blew in the fierce wind as she stood by and observed the servants beneath her rank, equally in the same boat as she was – just a new recruitment with little to no experience, destroy the temple of the priests. There weren't many to be banished, but there was one who did not put up much of a fight unlike the others.
"Move it, you!" The soldier was being particularly rough with him and (Y/N) watched with sorrowful eyes, wishing that she hadn't gotten herself into this mess. He looked in her direction, and the two met eye contact as he was dragged out of the castle.
"Let me," (Y/N) confronted the soldier and took the priest in her own hands. Trying to keep up the general appearance of her Lord Yu-Hon's right-hand lady, her eyes were stern as she walked the priest out of the castle grounds.
"I'm so sorry," she mouthed silently to the poor priest as they made eye contact.
"Think nothing of it," he replied quietly. "I know you are only doing what is required of you. God holds no ill will towards you."
"Thank you, uhh-"
"Ik-su," he smiled humbly. They reached the exit, and (Y/N) wished she didn't have to literally throw him out. He fell into the dirt as the gates between him and her closed, leaving the priest Ik-Su banished and without a home.
Solemnly returning to where the deconstruction was taking place, Yu-Hon was idly standing by as he watched decent progress being made. She stood by his side, tall and confident like he.
"Once our kingdom gains more land through my father's ruling," her lord began, "land will be rewarded, for you are my Baroness. Your manor will be built promptly."
"Ah, th-thank you, Lord Yu-Hon," she spoke with a calm and collected tone. Satisfied, he returned to his quarters. The last of the standing temple fell with a crash, and (Y/N) sighed at what she had ordered the servants to do. Feeling as though she needed to reflect upon her actions, she strolled away from the eyes of the castle inhabitants and staff.
Now was the yellow dragon's chance.
He crawled through a hole in the wall he had managed to find, and crept around the unguarded parts of the castle where she walked. "Miss," he whispered to get her attention. Her attention was caught, and her hair swayed in synch with her dress in the breeze. She really was young. Seeing a boy about her own age speaking to her in hiding, she looked around to see if she was being watched before cautiously approaching him.
"Who are you...?" she asked.
"That's not important right now, Miss. I'm going to help you get out of here."
"W-What? What do you mean?"
"Lord Yu-Hon is purposely treating your badly. I'm sorry, I'm to blame."
"I'm sorry, I'm really confused. You're... trying to help me?"
"I was the one who made the guard let go of you... so you could get inside the castle grounds." The girl knelt down to Zeno's height, sick of looking down at him both physically and in social status. It was a given, and she had no choice but to abide.
"That... was you?" Zeno looked at the concrete ground as his hood covered his face, shameful of having caused someone so much trouble. Unexpectedly he grabbed her hand and started to gently lead her away.
"I can get you out of here safely – don't worry." She pulled her hand away.
"B-But... I can't-"
"They won't kill you. I'll take you home, Miss!"
"No, I mean... thank you, but..."
"This isn't what you wanted, is it?"
A guard doing his rounds circled a corner and called out on (Y/N) for being too far away from anyone. Zeno quickly hid behind the wall and was luckily unseen, yet the patroller remained obviously suspicious. With guard's back turned, (Y/N) whispered to the yellow-haired teenager. "Meet me back here in this same place tomorrow at dawn. We'll talk then...!" And she quickly retreated back to where she came from.
The yellow dragon watched after her until she was completely out of his sight, and only then did he retreat out of Hiryuu Castle's territory. There was a sense of relief that brought an unusual peace over him, replaying the words in his head of what she had said with such a gentle aura.
"At dawn..."
Yu-Hon was trying to change her, and make her whom he wanted her to be – He could easily rob her of her kindness and true nature, and transform her into someone Hiryuu would not appreciate roaming his castle. Zeno's heart sank. It was the last thing he ever wanted - to disappoint his king. And now, he didn't want to disappoint the girl either.
Before the sun had completely set with its light slowly disappearing from the earth, (Y/N) casually strolled over towards the entrance of the castle – the same place where she made such a fuss to get inside the grounds. Sure enough, she found one rock that stood out on the path. It was a decent size, so she could see why it was so effective a throw. She picked it up, and returned to her quarters.
The night moon had risen and all in the castle grounds were returning to their sleeping quarters. It didn't seem fair to (Y/N) that she had an entire room to herself, whilst every new recruited servant had to share the same room with about twenty or more others. She had no reason to believe herself to be of higher value because of this gracious role she had been appointed. There shouldn't be a reason for her to feel so mistreated, what with the high pay and land she was being given.
Staring at the big beautiful moon, recalling the events that had happened in the past twenty-four hours, she unknowingly started fiddling with the rock in her hand. She was caught off guard when an unusual glint shone in her eye in the moonlight. Looking down in her hands, she noticed that she had brushed off enough dirt to reveal a magnificent blood red shine. Entranced by the beauty of it, she worked hard to clean it as much as possible. She wished to give it to the boy who wanted to help her, to show her gratitude in one way or another.
...
"As the yellow dragon warrior, I was told I was blessed with a strong body, but I didn't look any different like the others. Guen, Abi and Shuten, even King Hiryuu, didn't know what my power really was. But... after Hiryuu fell asleep, I found out for myself..."
"That must've been so hard. I still can't believe you're one of the four dragon warriors. Lord Yu-Hon declared it to be a forbidden text, because he doesn't want King Ju-Nam to be overruled."
".How do you find it here so far, Miss (Y/N)?"
"It's... doable."
"But you weren't expecting it to go this way?"
"Far from it. I just wanted a servant's job to receive any kind of income. But this... it's beyond what I had expected."
The conversation dragged on and on for what felt like countless hours. Since (Y/N) had been rewarded what she was promised from Yu-Hon, her own piece of land, she was able to speak to the banished 'priest' more comfortably. But it still didn't feel right to her to have so much power in her hands, of course still under the loyalty of whom she served.
"Your manor is very big," Zeno pointed out as he looked at the grand design of the mansion."
"It's too big. I talk to myself to make the place feel less lonely, but my echoes just make it sound bigger."
"Well, I'll be sure to come by and keep you company!"
(Y/N) smiled at his burst of cheerfulness. "I like your company, Zeno. Thanks!" After the both of them remained silent, the two realised what Zeno had just said, and began to question the dangers of it. "Umm, Zeno-"
"I won't get caught, don't worry! But..." he sighed and looked at the flowers that blew with the grass in the soil. "I don't want you to get caught either, Miss. You could get into a lot of trouble."
"Oh, come on. I'm the King's son's Baroness! I'm sure I could talk my way out of it somehow, if I ever get caught," she mucked around to brighten the mood a little. Zeno let out a laugh, which made her laugh with him. There was something about his aura that brought so much ease to her anxious mind, and she wanted him to stay around forever... seeing he was able to.
"Miss-"
"Zeno-" Both of them started speaking at the same time over the top of each other, creating a small moment of awkwardness.
"Y-You go first, Zeno."
"N-No, you first, Miss (Y/N)."
"Well..." she paused as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, avoiding eye contact as she looked into the far off distance of the golden field. "I was thinking... what if..."
"Yes...?"
"W-What if you stayed here?"
"Here?"
"Y-Yeah, here! In the manor! You wouldn't have to worry about where you would need to go, and you could rest for a while before you, you know, move on..." Both hearts were thumping furiously at (Y/N)'s offer. More than anything, the little yellow dragon wanted to accept.
"I... I think that'd be really good..."
"But...?"
Zeno hesitated. "I don't think it's a very good idea."
The conversation was put on hold abruptly as a knight was riding on a galloping horse to where the two had their conversation. (Y/N) gasped in surprise. "Zeno, quickly! Hide!" Doing as he was told, he quickly fled from the area, out of sight of the staff from the castle.
"L-Lady (Y/N)!"
"What is it?"
"We're... we're under attack! A powerful family from the south... has directed troops towards Kouka Kingdom...!" the knight explained with puffed out breath. "L-Lord Yu-Hon has requested your presence, my lady...!"
"Quickly, take me back."
"Yes, of course!" Hoisting herself up onto the back of the horse, she held onto him tightly as they made a speedy return to Hiryuu Castle. (Y/N) looked back hoping to see Zeno's face before everything in front of her was to happen, but he had fled completely. She sighed, and looked ahead to see the knights being put into formation and ready for battle.
From a distance, Zeno watched her join her Lord's side, feeling a great disappointment within him. Just from that basic dialogue, he could instantly tell that she was well accustomed to her role as a Liege, what with the many months that had already passed. He wished his circumstances were different, or else he would've said yes to staying with her with no hesitation. But knowing full well that he would have to let go eventually... he couldn't bear to think about it. It was best for him to not get so close, for both of their sakes.
...
"(Y/N)."
"Yes, Lord Yu-Hon."
"My father has left this fight in my hands. You serve as my servant, and so you must follow my every order and command."
"Yes, sir."
"You are to protect me as your master – Make your own calls during this battle if necessary, if it means my safety."
"Sir... I'm afraid I have no experience in fighting-"
"You don't think you can protect me without fighting?"
"N-No, not at all, sir! I will do what I must."
"Good." Turning his back away from her, her strong stance loosened as the severity of the situation just hit her. There was a full possibility that she could die out on the field, protecting the man she wished she didn't have to, all because of her role in the ranks. All she wanted in that very moment, was a hug.
Saddling up her own horse, (Y/N) rode beside Lord Yu-Hon in front of the troops that followed closely behind them. Halting their positions on one side of the field whilst the enemy continued marching forward, Yu-Hon gave his commands. All too quickly, both sides had clashed whilst (Y/N) spectated from the backlines, keeping both eyes wide open for any veiled dangers.
Men from both sides fell to the ground with a painful death ending their lives. She never wanted to see this as a worker in the castle, let alone as the Liege of a powerful general, but what else was she to expect? She quickly noticed that the opposing side started to outweigh their own side. This was (Y/N)'s time.
"For Lord Yu-Hun, the rest of you, pair up and charge to the frontlines!" she yelled in a loud voice to the men behind her. Their battle cries were loud and fierce, catching the opposing side off guard as they charged at full strength. Seeing that her decision was good, Yu-Hon turned to face (Y/N) and nodded in recognition. She all of a sudden felt like she could do anything, seeing that her Lord had finally recognised her efforts.
Moments after (Y/N)'s command, the battle ended with the remaining opposition fleeing from the fight. All except one. "Die, you royal!" a man from behind canyon rocks appeared with a bow ready in hand, the feathered arrow piercing the air at great speed.
It was weird. She never expected to do something like this without hesitation. Maybe it had something to do with Yu-Hon's strong faith in her. In any case, she stood in front of him after he dismounted from his horse, shielding him as much as possible. Surprised gasps from all around her filled the air as she waited for the attack. But it never came.
"Y-You!"
(Y/N) slowly looked behind her, only to find that someone else had stood in front of her instead. Recognising the familiar yellow hair, she freaked as he fell back onto her. "Z-Zeno!" The arrow protruded from his chest, red liquid quickly staining his clothes as he looked up at her.
"S-Sorry, Miss..."
Yu-Hon violently pushed passed, and saw the banished priest with his own eyes. "(Y/N), you know him..!?" Her eyes widened. She had been caught red-handed, and there was nothing good about where this was going to go for her.
"I... I didn't know he was a priest, s-sir!"
"Nonsense. First you disobey my orders in keeping all priests away from the castle, only for you to become better acquainted with this one, and then you lie to your master in denial. This is anything but loyalty."
"S-Sir, please! Let me explain-"
"Take her back to the castle. Punishment will be served when I return after." (Y/N) was forced to drop Zeno onto the ground after her hands were tied up. She thrashed around trying to get out of their grasp, but was silenced with a quick blow to the head.
The yellow dragon yanked the arrow from his chest once no one was left behind him, feeling his chest transform into indestructible scales of the dragon god. He watched after her in distraught as she was taken away. There was only one punishment that was suited for a Baroness of the castle, and Zeno was the one who served it to her.
"Yellow dragon!" His ears twitched when his formal title was called out by the monster Yu-Hon, who was a little further behind than the rest of his army. He pointed his sword to the yellow dragon, still on the ground, threateningly. "Consider this as your punishment also. She will be executed if I ever see or hear of you again." With that, he marched behind his soldiers who had claimed victory.
'She will be'... was that not her punishment to begin with?'
...
"L-Lord Yu-Hon..."
"Yes, what is it? Be quick."
"It's Lady (Y/N), sir. She lays on her deathbed in her manor, my lord."
"I care not what happens to her. Don't waste my time any longer."
"B-But sire, she's your-"
"That will be all, servant."
"Ah, y-yes sir!"
Yu-Hon truly did keep his word. He did not intend to end (Y/N)'s life for her betrayal. Zeno was both ecstatic yet broken-hearted to hear the news quickly get around the castle grounds. She was alive, but that day would be her last. Wasting no time Zeno sprinted towards her manor, seeing how much it had aged after the many years he had not returned for.
He lost count. He didn't think that the earth had turned so fast for this time to already come. She was only a young girl yesterday – not even an adult, but now she was dying. All he wanted was for her to live, even though life was never going to be easy for her from the day she was recruited. He stood outside the mansion for some time making sure that it was silent, minus the raspy coughs of an elderly woman.
The door creaked wide open as he took gentle steps into the large house he remembered she hated so much. He weaved around looking left and right for the room she lay so helplessly in – it was just one giant labyrinth. Finally, a door only slightly open revealed whom he had been looking for, but she was not the same.
"Who's there?" she weakly spoke, causing herself to cough violently. Zeno hesitated at first, his heart wrenching at the sight of her wrinkles, grey hair and deathly pale face. Shakily, he took one step after the other and knelt beside her bed. "I can't see.. w-who's there...?"
"Miss (Y/N)...?" He gently rested his soft, warm hand on top of her fragile, cold ones. She didn't even flinch at his touch, but instead smiled with tears instantly brimming.
"Ah, Zeno..." She feebly raised her hand and literally, blindly searched for his face. He clasped her hand with both of his, and held her hand against his face. She felt droplets of water running over her fingers as she caressed his cheek with her thumb. "Is that tears I feel...?"
"M-Miss, I'm sorry..." his strong front instantly crumbling, he sniffled as whispered sobs escaped him.
"After all this time... I knew you wouldn't leave me..." The dragon warrior couldn't get the words out of his mouth as he rested her frail hand onto his lips.
"I thought they killed you," he whispered.
"No... Turns out that Yu-Hon couldn't let me go." Zeno couldn't tell whether she was coughing or chuckling, but he made himself believe it was the happier possibility. "'Permanent seclusion' was my punishment..."
His stomach churned at the terrible thought of (Y/N), a young beautiful girl, having to live her life in this huge manor, all alone as her life slowly wasted away until this very moment. He could've been there and kept her company, but it was either that or her life would've been cut considerably shorter.
"I-I have something for you."
"What is it...?"
"In the little box... on the dresser..." Zeno looked to the furniture in front of him, and walked over to it by the window. "Don't just stare at it, o-open it up..."
Gently opening the lid, a beautiful red gemstone shone in the sunlight. It was so magnificent that he had no words for what he felt when he looked at it. "This is-"
"That was the so-called rock... you threw at the solider that day..." he closed the lid, and held the small box to his chest. "Th-Think of King Hiryuu... and his beautiful hair you loved when you look at it." Even though she couldn't see it, Zeno silently nodded as the tears streamed down his cheeks.
(Y/N) began coughing uncontrollably, finding it difficult to get her breath back. Zeno shook with fear, terrified that this moment had ended too soon. Rushing to her side, he held her hands, and she soon was calm once again.
"Zeno... the window... open it for me?" He did as he was told, and the beautiful scent of nature instantly filled the room with its tranquillity. She exhaled, as though she were ridding of every bit of oxygen she had left. Her breathing had slowed right down, and her chest was barely rising and falling.
"(Y/N)...?"
"I can see  the sky..." her hand was shakily pointing to the ceiling above her. Zeno strolled over to the bed, and lay by her side as her last breath was approaching. "Hiryuu... The sun... It's warm like you..."
His fingers intertwined with her unmoving hand lying beside her, softly grasping onto what warmth she had left in her body. "I love you..."
"I-I know, yellow dra-gon..." her head rested on his shoulder as she heaved. "I... loved..."
And the final breath was drawn.
