One: "Howie"

I loved the weather this time of year. Honolulu was hot, sticky, humid. Most people (mainly tourists) hated it, too hot and sweaty for them to handle. But, being raised here, I'd grown to love it.

I was racing my best friend, Kaitlyn, to the small island off the coast of my Grandparents' private beach the day my life changed. She almost always won, on the rare occasion that I would win, she was probably letting me.

Today the water was gentle, and we both made the decision that we would just slowly make our way to the island.

I floated on my back, humming as the warm water washed over me. I gazed up at the beautiful clear blue sky, looking like an etch-a-sketch from the jets flying overhead, not a cloud in sight. I could hear the young children laughing from the distant beach, the volleyball players yelling and cheering as they scored. It was... perfect.

"I don't know why you love this so much," Kaitlyn sighed, "It's so hot and-"

"Sticky and too much for you, and you can't wait to go to New York. Yes yes, Kaitlyn, I know."

She laughed, "You know me too well."

"It's almost like we were raised together or something." That made her laugh even harder.

"Seriously though, Howie," she said, "You can't actually think we're meant to be here forever, right?'

I sighed, "I don't know, I could see myself staying here for most of my life. I certainly wouldn't move to the mainland, if that's what you're asking." I heard the chirping birds, and the music playing all hours of the day, smelling the salty sea air, why would I ever want to leave?

"I don't know," she sighed, "I just feel like we're meant for more than this place. At least... I am."

I smiled at her, "You can go have fun in the freezing cold, I'm just fine staying here. Where the weather's always warm and the boys are fit."

She rolled her eyes and splashed me, "God, Howie, you're boy crazy."

"Why wouldn't I be?" I pointed to a surfer with a toned upper body and long blonde hair, running towards the water through the sand, like a scene straight out of Baywatch. "I'm surrounded by that all day."

Kaitlyn scrunched up her nose, "Eh, I like the artsy ones."

I laughed, "You're lucky you're going to school in New York then, there's a bunch of those boys there I bet."

We both got quiet after that. Sure, she loved me like a sister, but her love for me didn't trump her need to get out of here. I didn't blame her, there were times I felt like a fish out of water in Honolulu, like I never really belonged. I didn't look like the fit, beach-body girls that lived here... and neither did Kaitlyn. But I couldn't give up the place I was raised, not as bravely as her, anyway.

Kaitlyn was curvy and blonde and perfect, but not muscular enough to be considered athletic. Nevertheless she was perfect to me. Her blonde hair fell in perfect waves down to her waist and her skin glowed perfectly in the summer sun. She looked like she should've been on the cover of Sports-freaking-Illustrated, or on a Playboy calendar. Not walking around in the halls of a middle-class Kalani High School. But, in a year or so, she wouldn't be there... and I'd be alone in Honolulu. I don't know if it'll seem like the paradise it is without her.

Kaitlyn and I arrived home from a long night at the movies, a good night spent third-wheeling for me. One thing Kaitlyn was struggling to leave behind other than me, her boyfriend Oscar. As far as I knew, they were leaving together, but he didn't seem to be taking her plan very seriously from what I'd gathered.

When we pulled into my driveway, along with my grandparent's beat-up old Jeep sat an expensive Audi parked next to it. We could barely afford our two bedroom house, so I knew that Gran and Gramps weren't surprising me with a new car, let alone a freaking Audi. We had a guest, and an unexpected one by the looks of it.

"Maybe you guys should leave," I told Kaitlyn softly, "I don't know who that is, but I don't know if my grandparents are gonna want guests-"

"Don't worry Howie," Katie said, "Just call me if you need me all right?"

"Yeah of course," I said with a smile.

Her expression turned serious when she gripped my hand, "Anytime, okay? Even if I'm sleeping."

I smiled and gave her a hug goodbye, "I love you, sis."

"Love you too."

I grabbed my bag and my beach towel and ran into my house. I could tell something was wrong as soon as I walked in. There was something different in the air, like something was hanging in it... bad news waiting around the corner.

"Gran?" I asked with caution as I closed the door behind me.

"Hi honey!" She called, her voice was tainted with worry. She wasn't like this often.

I started to run upstairs, "I'm gonna shower and then I'll be down for dinner, alright?"

"You might wanna take a rain check on that shower, squirt," an unfamiliar voice said from behind me. I turned around quickly. I'd recognize the gaze that met my own anywhere. From the commercials to the posters that lined Oscar's room. The man that stood at the bottom of the stairs was Tony Stark, CEO of Stark Industries, Iron Man himself. His hair sat perfectly atop his head, and he wore an expensive looking charcoal-gray suit. He didn't look any different than his photos.

"Mr. Stark," I stepped back down to stand in front of him. I shook his hand confidently, "It's an honor." Gran stood behind him, a sad smile on her face while she gently wiped a cup with a white cloth, "Is everything alright?" I asked while alternating my gaze between both of them.

"Honey-"

"You might want to sit down for this," Tony interrupted.

"N-no," I shook my head aggressively, "I'm not your kid, I can't be. My parents are dead. They died when I was a baby."

"Well," he sighed and folded his hands in his lap, "I'm sorry that's what you were told but it's simply not true."

I rolled my eyes and scoffed, "Then why am I just now finding out about this, huh? You finally decided it was time to be a good dad?Wanna take your kid out for ice cream? Well, I hate to break it to you, but you're about 14 years too late."

"We can put a pin in the ice-cream idea," he got up and handed me a manila folder, "But, as your biological father, I've taken it upon myself to take legal guardianship over you until your 18th birthday. At that point, you can decide if you want to go off to college, or come back here, or stay with me."

I turned to Gran, "You let this happen?!"

She held her hands up, "Sweetie, try and understand, he's your father, give him a chance."

"No, Gran," I said, "He had his chance, 17 years ago."

"Yes but then your mother died," he snapped. Gran and I fell silent at the sudden aggression from Mr. Stark. He stood in front of me and stared directly into my eyes. "We named you after my father, Howard Stark," he said with a sigh, "My father, who gave me a company and turned me into one of the wealthiest men on the planet. So, kid, whether you like it or not, you're a Stark, you're going to inherit my company, and you're coming to New York with me."

I couldn't speak, couldn't breathe as I stared at myself in the mirror. I had his face, I don't know why I didn't notice sooner.

I wanted to punch the mirror, bloody my knuckles from the broken glass. I wanted to look as broken and out of control as I felt, maybe then it would be easier. Maybe then things wouldn't change.

Kimberly Truhler is a Film and Fashion Historian who has been an expert for entities including TCM, the BBC, the National Film Registry, Christie’s, and the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) and was recently featured in CNN’s docu-series American Style. You can delve into the history of fashion in film on her site GlamAmor.com. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to ask Kimberly a few questions about that subject and the upcoming Oscars. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did putting it together.

A: What classic female actors have had the biggest impact on fashion?

K: I think it’s pretty easy to say that actresses like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly are style icons who everyone knows, even those not familiar with classic film.

A: What role did the studio system play in the impact of fashion, which was created by incredibly talented designers, who were also just hired hands?

K: Well, each studio had a head costume designer as well as other designers who worked on the productions. MGM had around 150 people working in the costume design department alone. The head costume designers generally came from the fashion industry. Howard Greer and Travis Banton (both head of costume design at Paramount), Robert Kalloch and Jean Louis (Columbia), and Vera West (Universal) all came from couturiers. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, the movies were the biggest influence on mainstream style, so what you saw onscreen became what women would wear in real life.

A: Today all you hear on the Red Carpet is “I’m wearing this or I’m wearing that.” I would think the old Hollywood studios wanted classic stars to pretend to be themselves, make audiences think that they made their own choices. Was that the case? Did designers get the credit in public that they deserved?

K: Crediting designers on the red carpet is a relatively new thing. During the Golden Age, the studio costume designers would also create gowns for the red carpet. It was more about people identifying with a star’s overall style -both on and offscreen – than it was identifying individual designers. The designers were there to support the studios and the stars. They were creating an illusion, a fantasy. That said, certain designers like Adrian had a style signature and people would become familiar with his work on the MGM stars.

A: How much free rein did old Hollywood designers have during the studio system?

K: There was no such thing as free rein. The approval process at the studios – production designers, directors, producers, studio heads – was intense. Of course the stars would always weigh in as well. And then there was the Production Code that was in effect, and costume designers had to work with (and often around) those rules. Often designs had to be pre-approved by those who enforced the Code, and they had the power to veto designs even when studios were in the midst of filming.

A: There were times in our country’s history that influenced Hollywood fashion immensely. The Great Depression and WWII come to mind. Yet, while many actors are political today, I don’t think politics – or where the country is – influences fashion in the same way. Why do you think that is?

K: The impact of the Great Depression and WWII on fashion wasn’t really about politics. During the Great Depression, Hollywood became a place of escape for the country – both in the aspirational visuals and theaters were a physical place to escape to. Costumes onscreen were pure fantasy, such as those on Ginger Rogers in her films with Fred Astaire. WWII was a time where the country all came together to support the war effort. It also was a time when fabric was rationed for everyone, so Hollywood costume designers tried to be conscious of this. There was a combination of designs that worked for every woman – the popularity of pencil skirts are a prime example of the impact of rationing on design – as well as continuing some aspirational glamour for 1940s audiences.

A: Beginning in the 1920s, if you had to choose one fashion trendsetter by decade, who would they be?

K: Wow. That’s almost impossible to answer. I’ll just toss out a few names as examples of actresses who really impacted style, but this is far from a complete list. The 1920s was really like two decades in one – the early 20s and late 20s. Early 20s – Gloria Swanson. Late 20s – Clara Bow. 1930s – Joan Crawford. 1940s – Katharine Hepburn. 1950s – Marilyn Monroe. 1960s – Audrey Hepburn. 1970s – Ali MacGraw.

A: Even a non-fashionista like me recognizes Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Doris Day as style icons. Who would you say is not talked about as one, but influenced fashion nonetheless?

K: Well, someone who is way under the radar is Kay Francis. She’s not a ‘name’ that’s known today, but her style can still be seen in fashion.

A: Marilyn Monroe. What can you tell me about her style and influence?

K: Marilyn’s star really began to rise in 1953 when she did 3 films – NIAGARA, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, and HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE. The last two were examples of her partnership with costume designer William Travilla. Marilyn had an incredible figure (obviously) so he really highlighted that. But he did so without revealing too much. As an example, you’ll notice her “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” gown only really reveals her shoulders. The 1950s was known for very feminine style (in contrast to the more austere 1940s) and celebrated an hourglass figure, and Marilyn was a perfect model of that. In addition to working with Travilla, she also worked with her makeup artist Allan “Whitey” Snyder who created that iconic look of hers that we all know today. Of course she was also just naturally gorgeous – she never took a bad photo – and had a vulnerability about her that made her appeal to both men and women.

A: Who would you say is the most influential classic male actor in fashion?

K: Cary Grant.

A: I’ve been lucky to attend several of your fashion presentations both online and in person. You’ve mentioned the sad lives and or endings of several of the classic Hollywood designers. Why do you think that was the case?

K: Well each was an individual case, of course. But working in the studio system was intense. I already mentioned the extreme approval process they went through, and this could be really difficult for any designers who may have enjoyed a bit more autonomy designing in the fashion industry. Also the high number of movies that would be in production at any given time – it was a lot of work and all of it was high pressure.

A: You also mention the measurements or sizes of the classic actors as you discuss the history of fashion in film. In fact, I’ll recommend that people visit your GlamAmor.com for those great measurement charts you’ve created. But for today, explain how an actor’s size or shape influenced fashion back in the day and whose “size” would surprise us most?

K: That’s a slightly complicated question. I think we’re talking about two different things – height and measurements. Each era certainly had a silhouette that was popular. The 1930s liked a more lean figure whereas the 1950s wanted a more voluptuous woman. I think it’s the women’s heights that surprise people the most. The petite Veronica Lake at 4’11” or Joan Crawford at around 5′. Then there are the taller actresses – someone like Kay Francis who was 5’9″. What was incredible is that the costume designers (and the production teams) made these actresses all seem like they’re around the same height. But I’ll make a blanket statement – all these women were small as far as their figures go. It’s Hollywood. They like actresses thin. When you see their costumes in person, you realize just how small they were.

A: In your view, what is the most memorable actor-designer pairing in Hollywood history?

K: I’m going to name a few. Adrian-Joan Crawford. Travis Banton-Marlene Dietrich. Travilla-Marilyn Monroe. Hubert de Givenchy (also fashion designer, of course)-Audrey Hepburn. Edith Head-Grace Kelly.

A: Is there a comparable pairing today?

K: Not really, no.

A: What is your favorite decade in fashion?

K: I wear a lot of vintage and I really love the late 1950s-early 1960s.

A: What classic films would you recommend to a student of fashion?

K: When I taught THE HISTORY OF FASHION IN FILM at Woodbury University, it was based on my list of The Style Essentials. These are 50 films with iconic costume design that impacted fashion at the time they premiered and continue to influence fashion today. I invite people to visit my site to see the list.

A: As you know, the Academy Awards began as a small, intimate affair. I don’t think fashion was high on people’s minds when they reported the winners. When did fashion catch up to the winners in the news cycle?

K: It took a bit of time. It evolved through the 1930s. As soon as there was real publicity involved, and then you had the public lining up to see their favorite stars as they entered the event, fashion became very important.

A: You usually mention current award fashions referencing classic influences in your presentations and on social media. What classic Hollywood designer has been the most influential in recent years? And…What current designer has been most influenced by classic Hollywood?

K: It’s hard to narrow down current designers who are influenced by classic Hollywood because as my work shows, most of them are. That’s why I started teaching fashion students – the designers they looked up to were drawing inspiration from Hollywood costume designers and certain films. Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Zac Posen, Jenny Packham, Zuhair Murad, Elie Saab, Vera Wang, Giorgio Armani… the list goes on and on.

A: What current actor is most reminiscent of the classic period in her fashion choices?

K: Reese Witherspoon, Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, and Charlize Theron often include some reference to Old Hollywood with their choices. That said, stylists are trying more and more to put their own touch on Oscar ensembles.

A: Your favorite Oscars look of all time is?

K: There have been a few. I’ll start with one from a classic film star – I loved Elizabeth Taylor in violet Edith Head in 1970. There have been some winners in recent history as well. Renee Zellweger in yellow vintage Jean Dessès in 2001. Charlize Theron in golden Gucci in 2004 and orange Vera Wang in 2000. Sharon Stone in a men’s white shirt and lavender Vera Wang skirt in 1998. Lupita Nyong’o in pale blue Prada in 2014. Of course Nicole Kidman’s chartreuse John Galliano in 1997 was a huge transitional moment for both her career and the modern Oscars red carpet.

A: Finally, what should the classically-inclined Oscars viewer look for on this year’s red carpet to recognize classic influences?

K: Honestly the entirety of the Oscars red carpet owes itself to Old Hollywood. The classic costume designers really created the template of what glamour looks like, so modern fashion designers and stylists turn to it again and again and again for inspiration.

To Love Again pt.1

Monday, August 10

”What the fuck is going on up there?”

A loud cranking noise was heard throughout the stadium and then the large 360 screen started to descend between the pillars. A loud floof-floof-floof was heard as the lights on the ground all lit up in order and blinded the personal on the ground. Five ”floating” stages were placed out on the ground and waiting to be rigged.

The floodlights beneath the screen came on and suddenly the whole floor bathed in blue light. It looked like a space ship coming down to land when the massive spotlights flipped outward and the screen continued dow. Lady Gaga’s tour director Marko screamed at the supervisor to shut it down but it was too late. The screen hit the spotlights and stopped. The snapping sound of the metal when it broke whipped across the empty stadium before two of the spotlights came off their attachments and fell over 60 feet to the ground.

Luckily no one was standing below it but Marko cursed and screamed that whoever had made this idiotic construction should be forced to climb up and put them back. It was the 5th show of Lady Gaga’s stadium tour in support of her sixth studio album and following in the footsteps of her successful soundtrack to her first movie as a leading actress. The concert was scheduled tonight and they still had 16 hours to go. He understood the workers were tired from being up all night and the new shift was supposed to take over just now.

He needed sleep as well and looked at his watch. 6 am. The Lady herself wouldn’t be pleased when she woke up. There had been technical difficulties nearly every show and last minute fixes. Three versions of the stage was out on the roads across USA and one spare version was still in Colorado. The one they used the opening night in Denver when Gaga performed in front of 78,000 ecstatic fans had been working the most satisfying so far. It had been used twice. It was his first time as tour director for such a massive tour and he was nervous, but Gaga had picked him personally and he wanted to deliver.

This day’s show was in Pasadena and the second biggest one on the North American leg. It was sold out of course and fans who wanted a good spot in the pit had been lining up all night. Gaga stayed at her house in Malibu and was scheduled to arrive four hours before the show. Marko knew everything had to be ready by then. No more delays. He left the stage site to get some sleep and planned to be back by noon but first he had to call her manager and sort out the broken spots.

It was 8 am and Lady Gaga was on the phone with her manager Bobby. The day before she had arranged a small birthday party for her dad so the sleepover guests were still asleep. The frequent technical issues obviously weren’t hers to deal with, but she had told her manager she wanted to know so she was prepared if anything needed to be changed.

”It’s almost like… I don’t wanna say it, Stef.” Bobby sounded a bit worried. ”There are two crews working on mounting and dismounting the stages and the other crew doesn’t have these kind of issues and it seems really unlikely one crew has the same damn troubles with two different stages.” He paused and took a deep breath. ”The screen isn’t even supposed to run into the spots no matter how they are rotated. And the noise it made, I nearly shit my pants thinking about it now.”

Gaga listened to him and exhaled. ”So what are you saying?”

”Someone is either really sloppy or wants the tour to look bad. It’s not like these issues would go unnoticed before the show anyway. It’s just costing a lot of money and time.” Bobby sighed and told her he would talk to Marko and Stageco, they were in charge of providing the stage and the crews. ”I’m sorry Stef, you don’t deserve this,” he added before they ended the call.

She put the phone down on the counter just in time to turn around to see her daughter bounce across the floor and scream in delight as her french bulldog Gus tackled the child to the ground. The girl spun around and lost the ball she was holding. ”My ball,” she shrieked but the dog obviously didn’t care. He quickly snapped up the ball and ran away, out into the garden and the girl was about to go after him when Gaga reached down and grabbed her pajamas by the back.

”My ball!” the girl repeated and squirmed as her mother lifted her up and wrapped her arms around her. She put her face against the girl’s neck and smelled her, kissed her cheek and made the little girl giggle with delight.

”Mama,” she said and pointed out through the patio doors. ”My ball.”

Gaga nodded. ”Yes, Joanne. Gus borrows it.”

”Bohwoh,” she repeated and looked disappointed.

”What do you say we have some breakfast, my lazy little peanut.” Gaga said and put Joanne down in her chair. The child was usually sleeping late, and had never been an early bird. She insisted on letting the girl sleep in her bed and when she returned after a show she could sneak into bed and wake up together with her. It was the most blessed feeling in the whole world to have the tiny body next to her, waking up to her chit chatting to herself in her baby language. Just recently she had been starting to put two words together and loving her own voice so much she never shut up.

Her daughter had Christian's dark brown eyes. Her hair had been dirt blonde when she was born but darkened with time. Now she was 2 years old and the most important thing in her life. She was the result of a a steamy, sweat soaked night of sex that left her body aching and pregnant – to her surprise. Christian had met up with her before a two day break in her touring schedule in St Louis when they hadn’t seen each other in 14 days. Gaga had been sick a few days, and thrown up a lot. She knew she had messed up with her birth control pills and just maybe she didn’t care on purpose.

By December just before the last shows she had found out she was pregnant. It was the perfect gift to receive at the end of her last tour. Not planned, but certainly welcomed. The last trimester of her pregnancy had been difficult and draining and while gaining a lot of weight she had been emotionally unstable and felt exhausted. She had given birth on August 14, a little more than six weeks before the premier of A Star Is Born, and had forced herself to work hard to get back in shape for the red carpet.

The birth had been a long drawn out process as well where she had complications and lot of bleedings post-birth causing her to stay a few days longer than planned. The baby was late. Nearly a week after due date, refusing to leave the safety of her womb.

When their baby was born she was amazed. This new person that she created, that had grown inside her. She had never known such gratitude and happiness. Her daughter made her heart nearly beat out of her chest as she held her for the first time. Convinced she had never seen a prettier baby in her whole life. Christian had been by her side the entire time and when he held the little girl in his hands and smiled with such pride she was convinced they would be a real family.

She didn't even care about her bloated face in all the photos from the hospital. Her round cheeks, swollen lips and double chin. Her tits had been huge and she kind of missed that. A photo shoot she did while she was still breastfeeding where her boobs were swelling out of her clothes had caused a media frenzy like everyone suddenly forgot tits ’tend’ to grow as they produce milk.

The first 3 months had been the worst uphill Gaga had ever experienced in her entire life. She relied on the tremendous support of her own family and was so eternally grateful for the baby, but she was hitting rock bottom and being a mother was the only thing keeping her above the surface. Her mom, dad, sister and Christian were basically the only people she met.

Even in her darkest moments she noticed how much it got to Christian, and how he had to distance himself from her. He was affected, but the baby came first and he did possess an overflow of paternal instincts. She tried her best, she loved her baby and had to keep pushing through the darkness for her. Some mornings she barely got out of bed and luckily Christian was there to take over.

When Joanne turned 4 months she was starting to get her life back on the tracks. At least she managed to open a door to a little light and started to see the end of the depression she was going through. Their first Christmas together as a family actually turned into a nice memory.

The following year Christian escorted her to the Academy Awards where she finally won her Oscar for Best Original Song. She made a jaw dropping performance and received a standing ovation that never seemed to end. Life was fucking amazing again. She had her family, the success, the critics were on her side, the public loved her, but she didn’t need the approval of strangers anymore. The confidence was radiating from her. She kept her daughter away from it all because she wanted her to grow up happy and away from all the judging eyes.

Being happy, having a career and both a daughter and a man to come home to must have been too many good things for one person, so about two weeks before her 33rd birthday everything was like turning a hand. She thought Christian would propose, but instead he broke up with her. He never gave a reasonable explanation to why but she understood that he was jealous of her and Joanne. The baby and her career came in the way of him being the priority in her life and having access to her whenever he wanted. He had yelled at her that they couldn’t even touch each other anymore because there was a baby between them constantly. And that the baby should learn to sleep in her own bed.

Whatever Gaga suggested, Christian somehow managed to want the opposite. She had been blind for months, completely swallowed up by her daughter and her own career. Taking Christian’s presence for granted and assuming he was as pleased and happy as she was. After all he did stand by her side through her absolute worst. She called him an idiot who was jealous of his own daughter.

On top of things Christian obviously immediately found a new partner. A little blonde model thing half his age while she felt fooled and abandoned. It took a month to get into her head that he wasn't worth it and that she would cope without him. Her value as a woman and mother didn't depend on him.

It also dawned on her how lonely she was and how hard it was to find a man to cuddle up against during the nights. It was the only thing she missed in her life at that point. She spent the summer making music, and there had been moments when she was close to dating, but it always ended before it lead anywhere. She was better at reading people now, and no one passed her tests. And then there was Christian. He was still confessedly involved with the child and fulfilling his duties as father. He spent a lot of time with her and suddenly never questioned Gaga's scheduling or suggestions.

On Joanne’s birthday she had sex with Christian again for the first time in six months. Knowing how hard it was to turn her down once she set her mind to something and how much he still was attracted to her, she used her social skills and her body and got what she wanted. Gaga realized she did it to prove to herself that she was still attractive, and not just for the sex itself. It simply felt amazing to be desired.

Christian’s new partner evidently found out about him cheating because Gaga texted him about it and she saw it. Gaga did it on purpose, because she still desperately wanted them to be a family and did everything in her power to win him back. So of course she did. Less than a month later they were a couple again and Gaga had already started working on her new album. Their love seemed to overcome all past obstacles and she was living again. Gaga released her new single ’Love Reunion’ out of the blue at the Grammys while announcing a 7-month worldwide stadium tour starting later the same year. Her demands had been no back-to-back shows and a maximum of three shows a week. Live Nation had agreed. They realized she needed time between concerts.

Gaga and Christian got married in New York, with only their closest family and friends attending the ceremony and then they spent two weeks in a rented house in Italy before she returned home and finished her album which was released in late April. By that time the tour was already sold out and they had not even began with the hyping and promotion. With the tour starting in August it was the shortest span ever for her between album release and tour, and the amount of work put into planning and promotion were consuming their relationship.

Now that she was starting to travel again and became accessible to her fans and media he felt left out. She was constantly booked somewhere and took her daughter with her everywhere. It was getting more and more difficult to find time for Christian even when he came along and she could sense how he once again felt threatened by her career and that Joanne came first. They argued over petty things again and Gaga felt like he tried to make her feel bad. If you’re not going to support me, you can leave me alone until you get over your male ego, she told him in a heated argument.

So a little over two weeks ago, in the middle of the tour launch, he had moved out of her mansion claiming it was because he felt like an employee in her massive team and he was sick of being treated like one while everyone ran around her acting like she was some kind of hub in this universe. To her it seemed like he wanted to punish her during one of the most important stages in her career.

He had been to the premiere of her tour, but skipped the following shows and she avoided conversation with him because she was still hurting. It had been hard to find personal time and rehearsal took so much effort she stumbled into bed at nights barely fit to say good night. Maybe it was better he got a little distance to everything so he discovered he missed her. He didn’t have to be so excessive about it. These last two months had been so intense and now that the tour started she finally felt like she had time to breathe between shows.

Christian was the only man she had been with the past 4 years. She told herself she only wanted him, and gave him so much of her time, but he still wanted more from her since he basically gave up his own career to be around her. She had told him she needed him, and his support for her was the most important one. She didn’t want to travel the world without him. He knew it would be like this because this was her job, but she would always come back to them. The disappointment she felt for him at this point was immense and she was heartbroken and didn’t know how to fix it without giving up a piece of herself.

Now she was sitting in her kitchen, watching her daughter eat all by herself and still ranting about her ball and the dog borrowing it. She looked at her, rested her chin against her palm and felt that enormous love in her chest that nearly made her suffocate and fill her lungs with air at the same time. When she leaned too close her daughter grabbed the frame of her glasses and pulled them off her face and tried them on. Her sticky fingers smeared the glass before she helped put them back on her mother’s nose and applauded herself on her good deed.

When Gaga was pregnant she had been letting her hair grow, and didn’t use bleach or dye. It was probably a good idea since her hair thinned out a lot after she gave birth. It was still healthier now than 3 years ago and reached her shoulders when she decided to go blonde again. She took the baby out of the chair and carried her upstairs to change her clothes. She put on a long sleeved top, pants and a little hat before they went outside for a little stroll around the garden and look at the flowers and the insects. And maybe even find the ball, she said and Joanne clung to her hand trying to manage down the stairs.

Every time the little hand searched hers when they walked outside it was another one of those proud moments when she felt like she had found her purpose in life. She was afraid she would love the baby to death, buried her nose against her neck before putting the child on the ground and let her run ahead of her on the gravel between the roses. She was a happy child, and she knew it was because she was immensely loved. Even moving out, Christian still wanted to be a part of the girl’s life, as he was her father after all and she deserved to have him in her life. But Gaga would never let anything or anyone come between her and her daughter.

Her mom had been her greatest support. She had Emilie, her nanny and also her assistants Mariah and Sam and her physiotherapist Heather, but her mom was the person she relied on the most of all, apart from Christian. He had to understand performing was her job, it was what she was supposed to do. Not only being a mother and a wife. It was her drug, her oxygen but there would always be them once it was over.

When Bobby called again Gaga was singing songs with Joanne who murdered the keys on a mini-piano. The girl was not the slightest impressed with her mother singing unless she sang directly to her face and tickled her. Then she laughed so hard she choked and screamed. Gaga ate some leftover food from the birthday party while she kept her daughter company. She didn’t want to eat too close to the show because it made her sick most of the time.

”What are you doing?” Bobby asked.

”Multi-tasking,” Gaga replied with her mouth full.

”They have fixed it. Stageco are going to have a talk with the team later when the nightshift is awake.”

”OK, great,” Gaga said. Glad to have a break from the baby talk. It wasn’t much of a two-way communication thing yet. Joanne just loved hearing her own voice and used her two-phrase sentences over and over. ”My dada,” she said and pointed at a chair. The girl started to talk louder using her limited array of words to get her mother’s attention back. Gaga buried her nose against the dimple below Joanne’s neck making the girl squirm and giggle.

”I can hear the princess. How is she?” Bobby gushed.

”Recovering from a cold, but that doesn’t seem to slow her down.” Gaga smiled and tilted her head back over the backrest of the couch. She put her feet up on the table and heard the voices behind her in the kitchen when they returned from shopping. Emilie started unpacking the groceries and chatted with Cynthia who naturally needed to cuddle her granddaughter.

Gaga got up and changed into sweatpants and a t-shirt after she finished talking to Bobby and the others had a light meal in the kitchen before they had to leave to go to Pasadena. Joanne nearly ate half a melon for dessert while the dogs sat around her hoping for a treat to fall to the floor. Their butts left the floor in anticipation each time the child’s hands hovered over their heads but they had no luck today.

She packed her things into the Cadillac Escala and Cynthia came out with Joanne and a bag of her belongings. Her daughter followed her everywhere. It wasn’t even up for debate to leave her behind anywhere. Gaga had large black sunglasses on, her hair was in a pony tail and she wore a white large sweater and the baggy pants. She got in the car while her mom sat down in the back together with the girl and the nanny. Her dad sat next to her in the front and she drove out on the coastal road to LA and Pasadena. Traffic wasn’t so bad. Gaga sang together with her mom and daughter while they cruised on their way to the stadium.

When she arrived she waved at her fans and drove past the gates. She didn’t stop anymore. Hardly ever and her fans had gotten used to it. Some respected the fact that she was more private now and some still had meltdowns on social media about ”how much she’d changed for the worse”. She thought it would be weird if they were still the same person today that they were 10-15 years ago. She obviously still loved her fans, needed them, just as they needed her but she didn’t have enough of herself to give away anymore. She wanted to give everything to her daughter who sat shielded behind the tinted reinforced windows in the backseat. Blissfully unaware of all the fuss.

She drove all the way up to the doors and parked so she could walk out and take Joanne out of her baby car seat and just turn around to get her inside, away from the smattering cameras she noticed on the other side of the curb. The fans closed up against the gates to get a quick look at her before she hurried inside. Joe blocked the paparazzi’s view with his body and got into her car and parked it while the door closed behind her. The fans cheered her name and wished her luck.

She continued down a hallway and a large room where the personnel had just finished their dinner, told Cynthia to bring some fruit when her on-site guide told her it was already in her dressing room. ”Oh, right,” she said, distraught and continued underneath the stands towards her assigned room. It was decorated according to her wishes. It was light and had a warm golden light. She said hello to everyone in her staff, thanked them for being there and made sure everyone felt like they were there for a reason and that tonight was a team effort.

Bobby came inside and assured her everything was working excellent now. There would be no delays tonight. She had a new musical director, going for an electronic pop sound, with influences from disco and funk. Adam had rearranged a lot of her older hits and made a seamless show that spanned her whole career. Some songs had been scaled down to leave more room for her vocals while others had been majestically rearranged to be stadium anthems. The sultry, more mature version of Pokerface had breathed life into the stale beat and opened the doors for new choreography and made her enjoy the songs again.

When she started to plan this tour she had decided that she was done with the old, repetitive sound and moves and wanted to show the world that she was an artist as well as a performer and how diverse she was. Not ’just’ by sitting down to play a song on the piano. The show was a story of how she started out and took over the world and then slowed down, had some dark moments and then built up her career again and established herself as a legendary artist. One of the best ever.

Naturally she liked the second half of the show the best. Sitting by the piano, hearing the fans sing along, cry and then from there take them all the way home leaving them feeling like they were run over by a bus. Her show sent them through all her emotions, the raving happiness at the start, anger, sadness and forgiveness and finally confidence and strength. She had thought about it a lot and finally come up with the perfect storyline.

She felt like she was more involved than before and more awake, more able to leave things in the hands of people she trusted. She was on the floor stretching and trying to find some inner calm, going over some of the advice she had been given since the first show when they had watched it together. Too nervous she found herself walking to the back of the stage, away from the audience during vocally straining parts and losing contact with them. Sing towards them and not her band or some prop on stage. ”Don’t forget the audience,” she whispered and laughed. As if. It was a reflex to turn around and strut away to give the audience a nice view of her butt cheeks.

Bobby sat down on the couch and looked stressed.

”What is it?” she asked.

”Nothing, I hope.” He didn’t want to tell her he had been worried all day, and his suspicions about the ’mishaps’ was eating him.

Sarah started to prepare to do Gaga’s make up and Bobby got off the couch. He exhaled and posed like a boxer. ”Knock em dead, girl.”

She chuckled and hit his fists back.

Buying Whores for Chuck Berry’s and a Threat from Jerry Lee Lewis

WEEKENDS AT THE STATION REQUIRED A THEME. For example, during the Oscars, we’d spotlight songs featured on movie soundtracks like Lulu’s “To Sir with Love” from the movie of the same name or Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” from The Graduate. Grammy weekend spotlighted Grammy-winning songs: “Up, Up and Away” by The 5th Dimension and “It’s Too Late” by Carole King. Mother’s Day had songs about moms or featured girl groups like The Marvelettes and The Shangri-Las. If there was no holiday or event to celebrate, we’d do twin spins—playing songs by the same artist back-to-back, or my favorite kind of treat, the same song performed by different artists, like “Walk Away Renée” by The Left Banke and then The Four Tops—or spotlight a big artist who was having a birthday. We found a way to make things relevant. The Fourth of July was always Founding Fathers of Rock ’n’ Roll Weekend.

Elvis Presley. Chuck Berry. Little Richard. Jerry Lee Lewis. Those are rock’s founding fathers. And since Elvis was dead, we only had to get the other three together to play the big summer concert the station was producing. “KOOL 93.1 presents a Founding Fathers of Rock ’n’ Roll Concert featuring: Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis! Live at the Orleans Arena, Saturday, July fifth!” It was the first time in history that all three shared the bill.

My main gig at the time was being the marketing director. By now, KOOL was in the top-five–ranked stations in Las Vegas, thanks to our hard work. It was a rarity for oldies stations to crack the top ten. But like I said, we were making damn good radio. Hot Rod was a programming and marketing genius. And our ability to create events like the Founding Fathers concert was a part of what made our radio worth listening to.

My office had once been a broom closet, about five feet deep and six feet wide. It was stuffed to the ceiling with files, standard office supplies, a clunky desktop computer that hated connecting to the printer, radio station swag, an empty mini keg of Hofbräuhaus beer and photos of me with some of the celebrities I’d met and/or interviewed; Barry Williams (Greg Brady from The Brady Bunch), Tony Orlando, my beloved Mary Wilson, The Beach Boys, Ray Charles, a certain yet-to-be-discovered child molester known for pitching popular gut-rot sandwiches.

I should quickly tell you about my encounter with Jared Fogle. At the height of Fogle’s fame, he showed up at the station one afternoon. Subway had deployed him on a media tour to promote the health benefits of a Subway diet. I met him in the lobby while he was waiting for an intern from Sunny to find him headphones. Why he needed headphones was beyond me because guests don’t necessarily need headphones, but Fogle refused to step into a studio until he had a pair of headphones. I learned of this as I introduced myself and offered to lend him mine. I ran to my office and grabbed them. As he awkwardly fidgeted with them, sizing them to his head, I made small talk.

“So, Jared. You used to be a pretty big, fat guy.” “Yeah,” he said.

“As you can see, I’m pretty thin.” “Yeah.”

“What would you suggest I eat if I wanted to pack on a few pounds?”

“What?”

“Well, what did you eat that made you such a huge, fat guy? I want some of that.” He looked at me as if I’d just called his mother a gutted cock wallet while stabbing her in the throat. Sure, it wasn’t the nicest small talk I’d ever made, but I was trying to have fun with the guy. Here he was, rich and famous and making a living by talking about Subway sandwiches and how he used to be a fat ass and now, no longer was. I figured he had to have a sense of humor about it and so I thought my question was totally fair and reasonable, considering that we both had weight issues, just issues on the opposite ends of the scale. He did not have a sense of humor about it and did not think my question was fair. But Jan, our receptionist did and so did Fogle’s PR girl standing next to him. I let the discomfort linger with their chuckles before walking him back to the Sunny studio for his first interview. I then ducked into the KOOL studio and suggested that T.J. ask Jared about his diet before he lost the weight. When T.J. asked, there was more awkward silence, which wasn’t the way we usually treated on-air guests, but it was pretty damn funny. While I feel for his victims, I take immense pleasure knowing that Fogle is rotting in prison, hopefully gaining back all of that weight.

But as I was saying…

My cramped office was across the hall from Hot Rod’s, which was far more spacious yet still stuffed with KOOL swag, swag from stations where he used to work, photos of his family, double the celebrity photos I had, a mini fridge with chilled beer, award and recognition plaques, and a stereo that constantly played KOOL 93.1 so he never missed a second of his programming.

A few weeks before the July 5 concert, Hot Rod made the short walk to my office. He would usually just holler my name, but I had my door closed because I was on the phone fighting with Allison even though she was in her office next to Hot Rod’s, across from mine. Our relationship was holding steady at the point of destructive workplace behavior, like having closed-door phone fights from across the hall. Hot Rod knocked on my door.

“Yo, Doc! Open up, man.”

“We’ll finish this at lunch,” I said to Allison before hanging up on her and opening the door.

“Why bother?” Hot Rod said. “We can all hear you. Just keep the doors open. Don’t make us work so hard.”

“What’s up?” I asked, respectfully annoyed.

He was leaning against the door frame holding some kind of contract in his hand waving it around in a look-and- see-what-I-got kind of way. “You ever had to read through a rider?” he asked.

“No.”

“Well, you’re gonna need to. This is Chuck Berry’s. Come on.”

He handed me the rider as we took the five steps back to his office. He sat behind his desk and leaned back in his eight-hundred-dollar ergonomic chair he’d received in trade for providing testimonials in on-air ads for the company. (Payment in trade was not uncommon, and Hot Rod reveled in it. It’s how he got the pool built in his backyard and hair replacement surgery. Trade, swag and prizes helped offset the crappy salaries radio paid. I landed myself a nice Weber grill, a Panasonic DVD player and a trip to Hawaii as a result.) He cranked up the stereo. It was his shift. He had voicetracked it earlier that day. I plopped down on the old couch across from his desk and began reading.

Most riders were standard. They listed the needs of the performer, like transportation and accommodations, and specifics on their backline—amps and monitors and such. Often there’d be requests for a certain kind of bottled water to be present in the green room. The more finicky performers listed green room temperature settings.

I came to the part that I knew Hot Rod had come to see me about. “Um. Is this real?”

“It most certainly is.”

“Two big-breasted, blond women.” “Yep.”

“Evian Water, that’s no problem, but two big-breasted, blond women? How are we supposed to provide this?”

“You know any cute college girls who want to make a few bucks?”

I had graduated two years earlier and knew plenty of attractive women who fit the description. None of them would be up for whatever Chuck Berry had in mind, regardless of the pay. And I wasn’t about to use my social capital asking any of them, so I said, “Probably not.”

“Okay then. Here.” Hot Rod pulled his wallet from one of the desk drawers and handed me the company American Express. “Go to Pahrump and buy two hookers.”

“You’re joking.”

“Better get going. You’re bound to hit traffic. And make sure they can provide their own transportation.”

“It might cost extra.”

“That’s why I gave you the company card.” Allison’s office door was still closed. I knocked. “Come in. Oh. It’s you.”

“Listen, I have to cancel our lunch date.”

“Figures. Why?”

“I have to go out to Pahrump this afternoon.”

“Why do you have to go to Pahrump this afternoon?” “It’s the closest place where you can legally buy hookers.”

“Oh! So we have one little fight this morning, and now you’re going to go buy hookers?”

“They’re not for me. They’re for Chuck Berry.”

“Right. Good one, David. Real smooth. Just get out and go. Enjoy your whores.”

“I don’t think they like being called that.” “Get out. And close the door when you leave.”

PROSTITUTION IS ILEGAL IN LAS VEGAS and throughout Clark County, but beyond, it’s a booming, tax-generating, safe, and regulated business. Pahrump sits just over the edge of Clark in Nye County. I pulled into The Honey Ranch. The year before, Honey’s had done a massive remodeling, and I orchestrated an on-air promotion with the brothel. Listeners could win memorabilia from Honey’s and qualify for a chance to win an all-inclusive paid weekend experience at The New Honey Ranch. Honey’s wasn’t just a place for hooker banging. It was a sprawling resort. It had a bar, tennis courts, a pool and a full spa. Everyone knew what the real purpose and the bread and butter of this brothel was: Sex. The resort and spa stuff were pure marketing. And that made it easy for a family-friendly oldies radio station to promote it on-air while giving away old plastic-covered love seats that had witnessed more a la carte erotica than even the most perverted Vegas sex junkies could imagine.

If you want to witness impeccable customer relations, rent women from a Nevada brothel. Buying a sweater at Banana Republic is more complicated than leasing out two humans at Honey’s. Everyone was, of course, smiling and friendly. I was made to feel like the most important person to ever walk through the doors. I told the madam who I was and what I needed.

“You’re Dr. Dave Maxwell!? I pictured you older and fatter,” Madam Maureen said.

“Yeah, I get that a lot.”

“We love your station and listen to it all the time. It’s probably playing in the bar right now. Come on, I’ll take you there. I’ll even buy you a drink.”

“Thank you, Maureen, but I really can’t stay. I just need to hire two of your best girls. Blond with large breasts.”

“Dr. Dave… you young ones are all about getting down to business. You ought to take some time to enjoy yourself.”

“Really, I have to—”

“Okay then. Let’s go have a look at our girls.”

Madam Maureen flipped through the schedule to find those who would be available for the concert. She summoned the girls through an intercom system in the way a McDonald’s cashier calls out your order. A few moments later there were six young, lingerie-clad women standing before me. She asked the girls to walk, pivot, turn. I would have felt guilty that they were being presented like prize livestock at a 4H competition except that this was their chosen profession, and this was how they made their money, and they were earning a decent buck, too. This was the furthest thing from the grimy and violent sex trade in dark back alleys and Thailand.

“Pick your two,” Madam Maureen instructed. I made my choice, Dakota and Candace.

As Madam Maureen finalized the transaction, she asked me, “What’s this for again?”

“Our Founding Fathers of Rock ’n’ Roll Concert. Chuck Berry requested two big-breasted, blond women.”

“Oh, that’s right! I would love to go to that concert.” “You know what? I know a guy. I think I can hook you

up. Will you provide their transportation there if I do?”

“Depends on how good the seats are.”

I smiled at her and signed Hot Rod’s name to the credit card receipt, waved farewell to Dakota and Candace and drove back to town, hoping that Chuck Berry would behave himself and that I hadn’t done a terrible thing.

BY THE TIME JULY 5 ROLLED AROUND, the show had sold out. I was able to get Madam Maureen two tickets, but they were nosebleed—we had to pay for the transportation. Loading in that day was exciting as the three legends and their entourages milled about the stage and the back hallways of the Orleans Arena. I was wearing my KOOL 93.1 staff polo with “Dr. Dave” embroidered on the right breast, so I was often stopped and asked a question or given a request by a manager or a roadie.

“You work for the radio station?” The man looked brittle, his skin blueish pale. There were two men on either side of him, each holding one of his arms to keep him steady and upright. They couldn’t have been much younger than he was, though they looked it. His Southern accent was soft and reminded me of my grandfather’s Memphis drawl. I was standing face-to-face with Jerry Lee Lewis.

“You work for the radio station?” he asked again.

“Yes, sir, Mr. Lewis. I’m Dr. Dave Maxwell. What can I help you with?” Little Richard walked past us, and he, too, looked frail and worn down. The Killer glared at him as he passed. The Innovator didn’t seem to notice. Jerry Lee turned his gaze back at me, his eyes smaller now, his face taut with rage.

“Can you do me a favor, boy?”

“Of course.”

“Don’t let that niggah touch my pianah.” He and his two men went on their way.

Fear replaced my awe. Trying to reconcile what Jerry Lee Lewis had just said to me, I barely heard Chuck Berry calling out my name from inside his dressing room.

“Hey! Dr. Dave!”

I doubled back and poked my head in. He was lounging on the small leather couch like a king with his spoils: Dakota on one side of him, Candace on the other. They smiled and waved at me. I smiled back. At least, I think I did. “Don’t let that niggah touch my pianah” was the only thing my brain could digest at that particular moment.

“You’re Dr. Dave, right?”

“Uh, yessir.”

“I was told that you handpicked these two beauties out for me.”

“Yessir.”

“Hell of a job, young man. Hell of a job. See you on stage.”

THEY PUT ON AN INCREDIBLE SHOW. Both Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard came alive once the lights hit them—each with their own piano. It was like it was 1958 again. Jerry Lee kicked the piano stool back during “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” Little Richard was funny, sassy and hit those woos with astounding accuracy. Chuck Berry even managed a duck walk during “Maybellene.” I watched from the wings with the rest of the station staff and Dakota and Candace.

“He’s a really nice man,” Candace said to me.

“I’m relieved to hear that,” I said. “Hiring you for him felt a little awkward.”

She smiled. She understood. She turned her body toward me, still smiling. I thought for a second that she wanted me to kiss her.

“We always work our hardest to make sure the customer has a nice time,” Candace said. “We always give a little bit… extra.”

Dakota, who had been engaged in the show, broke her focus and joined Candace in the smiley, busty standoff with me. And then I realized that they didn’t want to be kissed. They wanted to be tipped.

“Oh, uh, hang on,” I said as I searched my pockets. I didn’t have much. Just a small stack of ten-dollar gift cards to Jersey Mike’s Subs. I had lifted them from the station’s prize cabinet and had been doling them out randomly to attendees throughout the show. With the grace of an arthritic magician, I divided the small stack into two and gave one to Dakota and the other to Candace. They looked at me, puzzled. I proclaimed, “The radio station—rock ’n’ roll—thanks you for your service.”

How Toni Collette Survived 'Hereditary,' the Year's Most Terrifying Horror Movie (Exclusive)

"I remember when I first started coming to L.A.," Toni Collette says as she relaxes into a sunny spot near the window on an otherwise overcast afternoon. "The woman, Jeanie Drynan, who played my mum in Muriel's Wedding, I would stay with her and she would watch Entertainment Tonight, and it was just like, Wow! I'm really just down from the Hollywood sign!"

Muriel's Wedding, the 1995 Aussie comedy in which Collette stars as the titular lovelorn oddball, launched the actress stateside with a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. A few years later, M. Night Shyamalan cast her in his horror film, The Sixth Sense.

Collette starred as Lynn Sear, single mother to a dead people-seeing 9-year-old son, Cole (Haley Joel Osment). "Night had made one other feature, but Sixth Sense really was, it felt like, his first big foray into feature films," she remembers. The twisty thriller earned six Oscar nominations in 2000, with a Best Support Actress nod for Collette. (She lost to Angelina Jolie for Girl, Interrupted.)

"I know people used to campaign, even at that point, but honestly, there was nothing, nothing," Collette thinks back during a sit down with ET in a suite at the Four Seasons. Dressed in a pinstriped shirtdress, her wavy blonde hair parted down the middle, she breaks into a toothy grin as she recalls producer Scott Rudin phoning her "so early" in the morning to share the news. She was 25 years old and, Collette says, "there was no utterance about the idea of me ever being considered for something like that."

"I mean, I grew up in Sydney watching the Oscars, and this whole world just seemed so far away," she says. "When you work on a film that gets that kind of attention, you just really feel happy for everyone. Because they're long hours, people spend so much time away from their families and [give] so much to it that you just feel like, man, somebody actually f*cking saw it and got into it, you know?"

Nearly two decades after Sixth Sense, Collette, who's 45, is returning to the horror well with Hereditary, one of two films starring the actress that will be released on June 8. ("I don't think I've ever had two films come out on the same day, let alone two completely polar opposite films!" she exclaims of Hereditary and Hearts Beat Loud, a feel-good indie opposite Nick Offerman.)

Collette wasn't searching for something like Hereditary, but she is a believer that projects choose her. And this was no exception. "I know that it did because I was very emphatic about not wanting to do anything heavy," she explains. "Yet, when I read it I was like, uhh..." Her eyes turn to saucer pans and she breaks into a laugh. "'I have no choice!'"

"I was sitting in my bed in my rented apartment with the window open," she recalls of reading the script for the first time, while filming the comedy of manners, Madame, in Paris. "It was boiling hot in the middle of summer and there was loads of traffic outside, and I remember when I started reading, I was like--" Collette dramatically grumbles profanities under her breathe. "'It's so noisy.' And by the end, I couldn't hear a thing, I was so absorbed in the story. I called my agent and swore at him, because he sent me something knowing that it would do this to me!"

Hereditary writer-director Ari Aster, in crafting his own fiendish horror film, looked to classics from the '60s and '70s, including Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby and Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now, as well as Japanese horror movies and family dramas. "I knew that I wanted to make a film that served as a serious inquiry intro grief and trauma," he tells me. "And then have that curdle into something else." Collette plays Annie Graham, an artist specializing in miniatures who inherits unholy hell following the death of her estranged mother.

"It's revelatory," Collette exclaims, leaning in closer. "But not in the way that you usually associate it with. It's not a positive change in one's life. It's a sudden awareness of everything hideous -- complete betrayal, a waste of one's own life, really, [that] everything's been orchestrated and manipulated -- and there is no hope. She's trapped. I found that--" She laughs and sits back. "I'm a pretty positive person, generally. And the fact that it is lit-er-ally hopeless, I found that really overwhelming."

Discussing much else of what befalls Annie, husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne), teenage son Peter (Alex Wolff) and habitually tongue-clicking daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) would risk spoiling Hereditary's secrets. Suffice it to say, the family is put through the wringer, grappling with grief, trauma and, eventually, something supernatural. The whole time, Annie is white knuckling it to stay in control -- until she isn't. One dinner scene, teased in the trailers, requires not simply an outburst, but a rageful eruption in which Collette remains at a 12 for an entire monologue.

"The thing is, the whole f*cking thing felt big to me," the actress says of movie's grueling shoot in Utah. "Everybody else was walking around [on] eggshells when it came to shooting a couple of particular scenes, but I swear to god, there was not one easy scene in this film. I knew it was going to be heavy, but there just was no let up."

As for how she managed to get into the state of mind to shoot the movie's most intense sequences -- while maintaining her sanity -- she says, "It was a case of not thinking about it too much and almost pushing it away until I had to just jump in and then jump back out again." And when she was in it, she says, she let whatever happened happen. "That is actually the most freeing, great day at work for me, when I'm out of control, when I'm not completely aware of what I'm doing. I've quit berating myself and rerunning the scenes f*cking months after shooting them. It is a way to hell." She shrugs good-naturedly. "I mean, I still do it to a certain extent. Like, after the fact, Ugh, I should have done this! Or, I should have done that! But you can't take away from the validity of a moment that feels real."

It's a realization that amplified seeing her young co-stars work on Hereditary. "I was watching Alex. He's much younger than me, and he was sometimes turning himself inside out, which was..." She chuckles. "Amusing, actually. I just think I've been doing it a while now."

"Our great actors, our movie stars, have something that's sort of intangible. You can't quite put your finger on what it is about them that is so great," the director Brett Haley tells me between puffs from a vape on the Four Seasons balcony. "She certainly has that intangible quality of just, like, greatness, where you just go, Man! What the f*ck?! She's really earned her stripes, and she can do anything. Go watch Hereditary and then watch our movie [Hearts Beat Loud] and tell me Toni Collette can't do anything!"

Hereditary premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was hailed as "a new generation's The Exorcist" and "the most traumatically terrifying horror movie in ages." Collette in particular was lauded for her superlative performance, instantly prompting speculation that A24 will campaign Academy voters to consider her come next year's Oscars. When I ask for her reaction, Collette purses her coral lips -- "Uhmm." -- then laughs. "I guess it's the same thing, you know?"

"You put so much into it, for it to be recognized in a broader sense is nothing but flattering," she says. "The experience of making a film is very selfish. My experience at work is what I will take away. But you always hope that there's going to be an audience out there that gets it -- and there really does seem to be for this film." Collette leans in again, her eyes lighting up. "There's this certain palpable energy around it. It's very exciting."

Pet Shop Boys: Behaviour

Pet Shop Boys arrived in the second half of the ’80s to out-gay essentially everybody. Combining Oscar Wilde-ian wit, compositional and lyrical sophistication that harkened back to Cole Porter and Noël Coward, sartorial style that split the difference between uptown chic (singer Neil Tennant) and downtown rough trade (keyboardist Chris Lowe), and a command of ’80s club music that soon proved itself far more comprehensive than most of their contemporaries, this North England-raised/London-based synthpop duo aestheticized gay life long before Tennant came out in 1994. Every LGBT person knew exactly what the pair meant in the chorus of “It’s A Sin,” arguably the angriest and certainly most overtly anti-Catholic chorus ever to top the UK pop chart and reach the US Top 10:

But after becoming one of the most internationally prominent acts of the ’80s with hits like their UK/US #1 “West End Girls,” Tennant and Lowe entered the ’90s knowing their “imperial phase” of uninterrupted success was over: Setting “Ché Guevara and Debussy to a disco beat,” their quintessential manifesto “Left to My Own Devices” stalled at #84 on Billboard’s pop chart in late ’88; their ’89 collaboration with Liza Minnelli, Results, pretty much flopped in North America beyond gay dancefloors, and the ’90 comeback they helped helm for Dusty Springfield, Reputation, didn’t even get a US release—despite all of them doing quite well in the UK.

Following these alternately sunny and frosty records, they released their decidedly autumnal fourth album Behaviour in the fall of 1990. Like the Cure’s Disintegration, Depeche Mode’s Violator, and George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice, it would transition their creators into the new decade by both refining and breaking from the past. The time was right, for the duo and indeed much of its following were now in mourning. Singer/lyricist Tennant’s longtime best friend had recently died of AIDS. So had Robert Mapplethorpe, who shot some of their Please-period publicity photos, and Keith Haring, who similarly intersected fine art and the club scene. Reported US AIDS cases were well over 100,000, with millions on the way globally, and despite the earliest AIDS drugs like AZT, which in those days often made people sicker, an HIV-positive test result was still pretty much a death sentence. Created in resistance to a mainstream that treated LGBTs as subhuman, the queer culture of defiance and liberation that shaped ’70s disco and much of ’80s pop—particularly PSB’s hybrid of both—was literally dying.

Unfolding like an elegy for much of what had gone before, Behaviour shifted the Boys from sly commentators to reserved-but-pained participants, with its understated but devastating lead track, “Being Boring.” The first verse presents the singer looking through keepsakes, as one does after losing a loved one. He finds a party invite paraphrasing Zelda Fitzgerald’s “Eulogy on the Flapper,” specifically the line “She refused to be bored chiefly because she wasn’t boring.” Boredom was a prickly subject for the pair: Their early deadpan videos and TV appearances were routinely dismissed by clueless critics as generating it.

Set in the ’70s, the next verse depicts the singer leaving his hometown, a mandatory rite of LGBT passage. He softly declares, “I’d bolted through a closing door,” an image evoking both the end of his closeted adolescence and the beginning of fully realized adulthood. By the third verse, which is set in the ’90s, the singer is self-actualized, but reflective: “All the people I was kissing/Some are here, and some are missing.” That simple rhyme still reduces gay men who lived through this era to tears, for AIDS had sorted our intimates into these two categories—those who died young, and those who might soon follow suit, including ourselves. If you hadn’t seen your gay neighbors and friends and former sexual partners around town, chances were they were dead, had gone home to die, or were nursing the dying just like you. “But I thought in spite of dreams,” the survivor sings of his fallen pal, “you’d be sitting somewhere here with me.”

Fashion photographer Bruce Weber shot the song’s lush B&W video, which features models enacting a fantasy version of the parties Tennant attended in the ’70s. The tension between the freedom of Weber’s imagery and the sadness of the third verse makes the eulogy even more devastating, but some fleeting nudity meant that MTV in America had an excuse not to show it. Still, “Being Boring”—ostensibly a dance track, but one featuring fluttering rhythms, a Larry Heard-style deep house bassline that appears only as the album version fades out, a subtle upward chorus modulation that adds sweetness to the sorrow, and a whirring plastic tube conjuring spectral cries—eventually earned its rightful acclaim. A fan site solely devoted to it dwarfs the official web presence of many bands, and on its 20th anniversary, a Guardian critic proclaimed it the greatest single of all time. Even Axl Rose allegedly bemoaned its non-appearance during the duo’s 1991 tour.

That tour, Performance, their first in North America, transformed the staginess of their videos into opulent theater just as Blonde Ambition did for Madonna the year before; in the Pets’ case, it was so over-budget that the well-attended trek still lost half-a-million dollars. And just as the autobiographical Like a Prayer fed Blonde Ambition, the personal nature of Behaviour lent Performance pathos. The dirge that opened the show, “This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave,” affirmed that, like Madonna, Tennant suffered major Catholic damage. The tune is hummable, but the tone intersects opera and Joy Division as it evokes Catholic mass, freezing rain, and grey architecture. No wonder the Pets eschewed the church for wit and disco.

True to their queer sensibility, PSB are intrinsically contrary, even with themselves, and just as their previous release, 1988’s Introspective, is all 12”-length dance numbers, Behaviour is mostly ballads. Even on overt club cuts, its lead single “So Hard” and “The End of the World,” the dance grooves that defined the duo are muted: No more big ’80s drums, no electro rumble or hi-NRG clatter, even if “So Hard” ramps up the trademark orchestral blasts of their previous hits. Rather than the sample-heavy rave bleeps that ruled 1990 UK pop, the album favors analogue synths overseen by co-producer Harold Faltermeyer, the Munich synth whiz who’d been Giorgio Moroder’s key player and had scored with Beverly Hills Cop’s “Axel F.”

But though the instrumentation is mostly as synthetic as before, it’s less pointedly so; the future was no longer as inviting as it had been in the duo’s formative years, when they dreamt of man-machines and home computers. Embracing their humanism to mirror their messages, the pair often blur the boundaries between synthetic and natural sounds: Mirroring the instability of post-communist Russia, “My October Symphony” fuses banging Italo-house piano, “Funky Drummer” syncopation, Marvin Gaye-esque yearning, and the classical strings of Balanescu Quartet, which all blend with the Prophets and Rolands and Marr’s wah-wah guitar so seamlessly that the hybrid suggests Shostakovich going Blaxploitation. You certainly couldn't call it just “synthpop.”

In the booklet for the album’s 2001 deluxe reissue, Tennant paints the unabashed love aria “To Face the Truth” as the story of a man who cannot acknowledge his girlfriend’s infidelities. But like so many PSB songs, it makes more sense in an LGBT context; that his lover is a bisexual who dodges their emotional bond. Having same-gender sex dictates that you’re homosexual, but loving someone of your own gender makes you gay—a step too far for some. “I wonder if you care and cannot bear the proof/It hurts too much to face the truth,” Tennant croons at the top of his tenor. Having just worked with Liza and Dusty, he’d suddenly become a more expressive singer, one here as adept at conveying sincerity as he’d always been at generating irony. The programmed rhythms hail from ’80s R&B, but his vocal is ’70s Bee Gees; had this been on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, we’d all know it.

Lyrically the most old-school PSB-y song of the lot, “How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?” roasts sanctimonious rock stars who claim to hate fame’s machinations but nevertheless align themselves with the trendiest causes. There’d been plenty of those in the wake of Band Aid, Live Aid, Farm Aid, and “We Are the World,” and they pretty much wiped out the more subversive and often queer “New Pop” movement that spawned the Pets. The album version is set atypically to a New Jack Swing beat, the kind that gave even Boy George a US R&B radio hit with “Don’t Take My Mind on a Trip” the year before, but the seldom heard single/video version remixed it into a more flattering Soul II Soul-style shuffle. Back home, its critique was bolstered by appearing on the flipside of their newly recorded medley of U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” and the Four Seasons’ “I Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” which echoed Boys Town Gang’s shamelessly camp disco-ization of the latter. Bono, who spotted the satirical finger being pointed in his direction, quipped, “What have we done to deserve this?”

As straightforward as “Seriously” is skewed, album closer “Jealousy” goes furthest in a quasi-symphonic direction. Played on keyboards but booming like a massive orchestra, it’s fraught with romantic angst like their earliest work, yet it suits their new phase of unfettered emotionality. The scene-setting opening conjures the outsized ardor of 19th-century art song: “At dead of night when strangers roam/The streets in search of anyone who’ll take them home/I lie alone…” And the rest similarly picks up where Scott Walker’s covers of Jacques Brel left off.

A crooner, not a belter, Tennant sets his vocal understatement against the over-the-top nature of his blinding passion for an unrequited love. This conflict mirrors the LGBT experience itself: You’ve got all this desire that must somehow be contained to a small percentage of the population, lest you find yourself making a pass at someone who might not share your sexuality and who might respond with condemnation or even violence. So you keep your outer voice small and whispery like Tennant’s, but that constant monitoring and muting only intensifies your inner life, and so you bear the burden of these feelings—here represented by the grandness of the orchestration the despair of the descending vocal melody, the processional horns that bear a stubbornly regal retreat. There’s no apology implied—quite the opposite.

Simpatico women understand this proud juxtaposition: Liza Minnelli considers Tennant and Lowe geniuses akin to Broadway maestro Stephen Sondheim or her dad. Pet Shop Boys critique masculinity the way classic rock bands exude it, but rather than the flamboyance that’s intrinsic to the gay pop star from Little Richard onward, PSB offer the calm control of the outsider looking in, their noses pressed against the shop window.

Having experienced worldwide eminence exactly when their people fell into deeper crisis than ever, they rarely took the easy path, and on subsequent releases like Very’s “Dreaming of the Queen,” they imagined a world in which there were no more lovers left alive. Fortunately, people kept dancing, and Pet Shop Boys still supply their nocturnal soundtrack. Last month, Billboard announced PSB as the all-time top male act on its dance club chart: With last year’s “The Pop Kids,” they landed their 40th hit on that list in 30 years, and 11th No. 1. That they did so with a song as wistful as those on Behaviour makes this achievement truly singular. Embracing disposable pop, they’ve created lasting queer culture just as it was in danger of disappearing. They celebrate the melancholia of being gay.
