ACOLYTE REVIEW EP8

OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD! i was so totally right (sort of). here is the link to my previous post where I did a review of acolyte before the season finale - ending with my predictions.

ok so: my first prediction was that "osha becomes qimir's apprentice", which FUCKING HAPPENED! haha guys I'm so smart. i think this one was pretty easy to tell depending on how you were looking at how the story was progressing- but their relationship was becoming really close REALLY quickly (....) and it felt obvious to me that they would become master/apprentice

second one: "mae accepts being sol's apprentice" uh........ almost? not SOL'S apprentice, but mae technically works with the jedi order? not sure about this one. i was completely totally fully not expecting the memory ending, but I was somewhere up there with mae "betraying" osha/qimir and helping the jedi. we can see how she changes emotionally throughout the show as she becomes kinder/softer, understanding, as she realizes that osha is alive, that she isn't trapped, things like that. osha is the opposite, we see as she becomes crueler (?) and... yeah.

third one: "maybe/maybe not they find osha and qimir and qimir convinces osha to fight against her past master" ok so THEY didn't find osha and qimir qimir and osha found THEM. ok so...qimir technically didn't convince osha to fight sol, she convinced herself. does this count? idk. but she also didn't really Fight him, she just.....youknow. wow

"fourth" prediction: "would love to see some kyber bleeding in s2" ok so I said that I wanted to see kyber bleeding in SEASON TWO AND IT FUCKINGH HAPPENED HERE. OH MY GOD ; I STARTED FLAILING AROUND AND SCREAMING I was like holy fucking shit they're recreating kyber bleeding in REAL FUCKING ACTION! oh my god. this is the first time we've scene this(???? ) and holy shit. IM SO INTERESTED IN VERNESTRA. OH MY GOD. is she psychometric? she seemed to be able to flit between "audio memories" when walking through the fortress? and when she was looming over sol's body, she was able to tell what happened. because then shes able to go and talk about it to the senate, even when no one else from there is alive and she was never told what happened. she sensed an echo of what he had said (or of that night that it did happen) and used it for evidence.

sol.....uhm....sol is,....hm....he's ... a person. i feel like he's an ok jedi but an even worse person. he's not a TERRIBLE person but holy shit he really hammered it down. "I did what I thought was best for you" YOU? This poem has not affected my appreciation of the past and the presnet because whatever happened in the past I am grateful to it for it is a lesson to us and needed to be learned in order for the next time we will encounter the same situation. I hope that we don’t blame it entirely to our former president, Fedinand Marcos, because there are many dark scenes in the politics we don’t know of. The poem made me feel satisfied because the people in that time were discipline, the people have veey high regard with tha authorities and shows loyalty and respect to them to the point that they would fear the authority. I also felt anger and grief, not with the poem thought but with the martial law itself. There are many lesson I got from the poem, one is that in everything you do, you should love your work. I also learned to respect and to follow the rules and responsibility given because in life it is very important factor to succeed. I also learned perspective of a child during the martial law is very limited. Second, I learned how powerful Marcos was back then when he was still in power.

By giving the amulet to Toby and Jim being the only person WHO KNOWS what happens, its a disservice to Toby. Because it means that Jim will always know better, Jim will be the one to say 'we do this, we can't do that' and eventually will have to come clean to Toby. Not only will this make Toby feel inferior to Jim's Trollhunter, but it makes him a pawn. Every step of the way he will have to question himself and ask advice from Jim and he can only do so much without Jim's interference without messing things up. Before knowing about the second chance, Toby will probably have a hard time adjusting, accepting and embracing the responsibility and just think "man Jim would be such a better Trollhunter than me". And after he learns the truth it...just confirms it youknow? So Jim will feel guilty for letting Toby bare the burden that he knows deep down is his to bare and Toby will likely feel inadequate.

I'm not saying he IS inadequate, but Toby was written as a side kick, the moral support, the one person in this whole mess that always had Jim's back no matter what. And you know it's a lot easier being the side kick and keeping an upbeat attitude all the time because guess what your shoulders are so much lighter than the actual hero's. Toby was written, played and loved by the fans as the side kick. Putting him under the weight of the hero means nothing will stay the same. HE won't stay the same. And it affects literally everyone else's arc as well

On what grounds is he going to let Claire into the trollmarket? Claire is no one to Toby. She won't be part of the team. She won't learn shadow magic. And don't get me started on the amulet as a whole. It didn't choose Jim originally because he happened to pass by that morning. Like we spent the entire original series driving the point home that Jim was chosen for a reason. By having the amulet choosing Toby everything goes out the window.

Everything that happens is tied to Jim. And even if Toby gets the amulet it still won't be about him, it will still be about Jim trying to guide events in a way that will not have the same result as before. It will never be about Toby being the hero. And that's such a disservice to him. He died a heroic sidekick but by doing this, he will only ever be the replacement pawn.

about dnf truthing: as someone who watched dnp for a long time i think we have nothing to base it all on until they are still living together in their 30s with no sight of other partners ever and buying a forever home and talking about getting a pet together. so much of what they do is just best friend shit that has no real juice behind it, if people were to see my friendships im sure we would get shipped too. we just romanticize everything we see because we are touch and love starved. but on a real note i think they do the joke flirting to feel closer to each other since they simply cannot be physically close to each other. they are all very affectionate people but the closest they get to hugging the other is ./hugging them or talking about it. it only makes sense to really run that affection in, to make sure they all know they really love each other. i also hope they normalize smooching the homies in our age range. once the situation is safe all the homies will recieve smooches.

but youknow. if they do end up together. i'll be happy for them. nothing better than a healthy romantic relationship with someone youve been bffs with since the beginning of time

The Fullmetal Alchemist Live Action Movie Part 9: Ctrl-Z

Well guys, we did it, this is the last installment of the FMA movie. Probably forever because this movie hella bombed and I am 99% positive they will not bring it back (and if they do, it will be a complete reboot because this is a mess) We are left with one burning question--how the hell can you resolve any of this?

Especially this alley of human corpses that you have to keep secret from the public:

PS, I did not skip really anything other than some closeups of them shooting stuff. We just have to trust that Hawkeye can just shoot 60,000 dudes with that tiny gun that probably only holds 6 bullets. (12 bullets? I know nothing about guns.)

But we’ll just have to assume that the corpses are dealt with in their own special way, because the movie will never address these again. So, meanwhile, back at the stone, Ed is dealing with how his MacGuffin is a mix of dead people.

Like this is an aside but dude--the drama that’s still boiling off of whatever is left of the hot turd that became Bon Appetit, like HOT DAMN. People always say everything you like will be problematic in 10 years but MAN. Fully expected for Scott Adams to get problematic. But Bon Appetit? The seemingly innocent cooking show?

Yo, I’m not over how much Bon Appetit lied directly to my face: that freakin smokescreen illusion of a perfect working environment. Cannot wait for the Netflix documentary that will inevitably come out.

So glad I was too lazy to make any fanart of that show. Or that I was not good enough at art to make fanart of Dilbert.

(I say knowing full well that the original English voice actor of Ed Elric had a huge ass harassment coverup that spans 15+ years and the legal followup and trial has been a huge mess.)

Anyway, Ed doesn’t even know how problematic that rock is. He doesn’t even know that the dead people in that stone are his distant relatives and that he’s one of the only living Xerxes’ians (Xerxicans? What do you call people from Xerxes anyway?) that are left on the planet, but it still carries weight. Not as much, but it still carries weight.

What follows is what the movie decided was the most important character development of Fullmetal Alchemist, mostly because it’s the only thing in FMA left after they did this massive edit.

(If the rock were still active then Lust would not be dead, she’d just reform, we’ve been over this. And youknow it’s been a minute for me, maybe this was also a thing in the anime where you can still use stones that are from leftover dead homunculi...it just doesn’t make sense to me. They would reform. But I will let this go.)

And if you were like “Hey back in the anime, it felt like it was a lot harder to get into Truth Hut--didn’t you have to kill a guy most of the time?” and you would be correct! I guess the idea is that Ed doesn’t want to kill the souls already in that rock in order to do the exchange--but this idea is never said out loud in the movie, although it was clearly indicated in the anime. Kind of...something they should have mentioned.

But anyway, now we’re back in truth hut but this time Ed can wear pants.

Over in the corner we have Al’s body, confirmation that he is still a real boy.

I guess they had to put this in, since Al’s only character angst in this movie is whether or not he’s real. They can now at least give us some closure about that.

And as the spectral deity decides to make a bargain, Ed realizes that profiting off of war crimes is a bad look.

PS I really don’t know if I should cover the ass on Al’s body over there. It’s kind of got feet in front of it.

We know that’s a dude in a speedo, right? I don’t have to cover that up? Cuz I’m not.

And while we have closure for Al as being a real boy, we really don’t have a lot of closure for Ed. I’m proud of him for not doing a war crime, but it’s not like he freed any of the souls in that stone and it’s not like he got to the bottom of the conspiracy, and it’s not like we got any payback for Hughes.

Ed is still in emotional limbo at the end of this movie, which is pretty disappointing. But again, I think they were REALLY gunning for a second movie, because most of the stuff at the end of this is them hinting that they’re going to continue the story another time...

but like...they knew they weren’t gonna get a second one. There’s just no way they couldn’t have known after how poorly it did in box offices.

Gotta love anime and their refusal to let the not even real people kiss.

They’re not real. They’re characters in a movie. Let them kiss. It’s fine. No one will get arrested.

But don’t worry, even though that looks like the end, with that sort of crazy ass flare that allows us to hide any of the background we didn’t feel like drawing, it’s not the very, very end.

And also, look at this movie segueing right back into Yugioh. Look at that. We got a cursed demon child and Some Basic Girl playing cards on a moving vehicle? Just the way it should be.

So, that’s over--and honestly--this was a hard movie to make. I think they made a lot of good choices, being honest--but I also think they made a lot of bad ones that overshadow the good stuff by a whole lot.

And since this isn’t really a critique but just a deep dive, lets talk about what we would have done differently. Because honestly? There’s no right answer. You have 130 minutes to tell the whole story. What would you do? See I asked bro what he would have done and his answer was “I would make the only villain Shou and that first villain” who’s name I didn’t remember either, so I decided to look it up on the FMA wiki and I saw a big surprise!

That Adolf Hitler is listed as one of the villains of Fullmetal Alchemist??? Guys did I...am I reading that right on this Wikipedia page?

OMG, guys there’s another Fullmetal Alchemist movie and I kid you not, it has Hitler in it.

I mean I’m not going to cap it because I got a list of other things to cap (as I know several of you are patiently waiting for) but like..........why have I never heard of this?

Anyway, bro would just condense everything to just the first 4 episodes and include scar and all the rest. Me? I would do the opposite and start at the very end right when Ed and Al meet up with their Dad, and only talk about Xerxes and the Homunculi and their family relationship and no one else.

I dunno if either of our ideas would work because obvi writing a movie is a lot more than just having an idea. You gotta get that through marketing, through people in suits who don’t know how stories work, through actors who’s hair will not hold a braid, etc etc. I mean one person just decided to put Hitler in it, and that movie got way better reviews so...hell do I know about writing anything?

But overall, the movie served it’s purpose by distracting me from the real world for a little while. So, thanks all for sitting on on this nice little excursion from our typical programming, been a weird year, so I was grateful for this buffer. We will go back to our Yugioh routine in the next update which will go up-----at some point. No idea when, I don’t have a schedule anymore for obvious reasons. But we made it to the start of the last season! Bakura’s in it? We see Pharaoh in actual Egyptian wear? I’m looking forward to a lot of really botched and questionable history, so I’ll see you there.

IT DID NOT TAKE LONG for Nala to piece together the truth between each fabrication that made up the watered down scenario that had been spoon fed to her since she left. One conversation with her brother and it all fell into place - what each (non)answer to any of her questions actually translated to. However, there were plenty of questions that even she couldn’t find answers for - causing her trip home to be all the more demanding. 

There was a lot of unspoken emotional labor that came with the knowledge that everyone she ever thought she could trust had somehow lied to her. From Sarabi shooing her away like a fragile liability ( when there wasn’t a soul who would argue against her being nothing short of an asset ) to Simba allowing her to believe he was dead for all those years ... it was a miracle to even consider she had a trusting bone left in her body.

But she did - perhaps it was just one - and it was reserved for Kiara. The younger Santucci was the only person in Nala’s life, to date, that had never once lied to her.  Nala could take her life and spin it in the palm of Kiara’s hand like a top and she could trust that the girl would not once allow it to stop spinning. She wouldn’t falter. It was the only relationship she ever had that not once lost its stability.

So when she saw Kiara, she felt a sense of relief. If this were any other say , there was no doubt that she would be livid. But Nala rushed to her and pulled her into an empty room without a word, only stopping to relax her shoulders once she had closed the door.

“I am so glad to see you,” she said with a sigh as she pulled the other girl into a hug. Kiara was the only person who always held Nala’s unwavering trust, her unsuspected solace among the craziness. And she knew in her gut that they had come home for similar reasons. They had the same goal. 

And Nala wasted no time to dive in head first.

“Scar’s working with Maleficent,” she said cooly, shoulders straightening on instinct as she stepped away. “They threw us in the middle of the lion’s den and told us it was a safe haven. Mheetu told me everything.” 

This was normally when Nala would start rattling off ideas. What she found, what she needed to find, how she could find it - but at the moment she was at a loss for words. She could go back and attempt to get info from the other side but ... how would she go about that when all of her networking was here?

“If Scar is somehow interfering with our lives halfway across the world then we have more of a problem than we thought we did. But, I don’t know how to fix it,” she admitted. It was the first time she didn’t at least have a semi confident solution.

For Shinji’s personal thoughts / relationship with Unit-01, there’s extra long detail mainly of Ep1 bc of first impressions / context ( then I’ll try to summarize ). Insight into some tiny details like Shinji’s unspoken thoughts that were maybe missed:

Shinji’s early and personal impressions of Unit-01 is mostly fear if we’re summing things up. The very first scene with it is even a jump scare to emphasize that:

The frame is black, and then after the lights turn on, boom, this:

A GIANT FACE WITH MONSTER EYES THAT GLOW YES I AM LOOKING DIRECTLY AT YOU NOW SON ( with bby framed right in the middle so you know how tiny he is in comparison / and narratively, that he’s also the subject of focus )

Much fear. But even before this scene, it’s great to remember that Shinji is already terrified bc he saw Fourth Angel-kun AKA Sachiel wrecking havoc outside, understandably freaked out by its monster appearance / how it was shooting down military planes like they were pieces of paper. Shinji was also directly caught in that earlier crossfire and legit could’ve died just bc everything happening was too close for comfort until Misato finally shows up in her car to pick him up. Best uber But after that they get caught in a huge N2 mine explosion that hits Sachiel dead on but it comes out with barely a scratch / casually just regrows a head or something. Sachiel seems invincible to Shinji by this point and that fact already scares him— as it should.

But back to the Unit-01 scene: as far as Shinji can remember, he’s never seen an Eva or heard of one and he lets everyone know this once Gendo starts pressuring him to pilot it and do the thing to save the world right now plz or else everyone in city dead including Shinji-kun gg

Ofc to Shinji, it’s not a good feeling at all, he’s running through all the sudden facts : Unit-01 is manmade, looks powerful, and it’s supposed to protect us. It isn’t an Angel destroying the city and nonchalantly killing things of military force so there’s no need to hide and run from it— but it’s still alien to me and scary and now my impression of it is even worse because my estranged father and adult strangers are forcing me to get comfortable with it immediately to fight the ‘Angel’ I saw earlier. So I might die after all today.

Fear of death on top of feeling useless / cowardly / abandoned etc is a lot. Then injured Rei scene AKA Gendo’s master guilt tripping plan happens, and it works, but this is also where his impression of Unit-01 changes for the better : There’s a huge tremor, Rei falls off her stretcher, and giant debris is coming down from the ceiling right above her Shinji—

Unit-01 moves on its own does a giant good thing

So this part : It saved him? This robot that he’s only had bad feelings about so far? Shinji is confused af but now feels a strangely positive connection to Unit-01, one he probably can’t put into words, but it ultimately influences his decision on not to run away. bc now it finally feels like there’ll be at least something on his side if he agrees to do this— AKA Unit-01 is the literal “something that can protect / help him”, which we all know is a concept Shinji desperately wants and chases. In this terrifying mess, it’s encouraging to him. And then Shinji says the thing:

Brave bby ( it’s nice to know that he ends up saving Rei again a few eps later, shamelessly serious and gallant / heroic Shinji is underrated don’t @ me )

Fast forward : after that he gets in, syncs perfectly with it, fights Sachiel but almost dies bc he missteps once, starts to panic, but mainly bc he’s never had any proper training prior gg NERV. Unit-01 goes berserk, violently kicks Sachiel’s ass, scares the living hell out of everyone watching etc.

At the end of Ep 2, after Shinji wakes up in the hospital and moves in with Misato, he remembers everything that night, traumatized:

The blood has settled, an already freaked out Shinji turns to see Unit-01 without its cool sci-fi unicorn headplate thing that it shed earlier in battle:

It’s once again looking straight at him. Oh no this is much scarier than the first time plz no I want the yellow sci-fi Spiderman mask eyes back

Then Shinji understandably screams his lungs out ( and that’s when he probably fell unconscious? ) So now he’s back to fearing Unit-01 bc his Eva is a beast of a robot, on top of now having PTSD from the fight with Sachiel. Unit-01 protected Shinji twice now by going berserk, sure, but it’s also extremely unknown and frightening to him after in ways he couldn’t have expected when he first saw it— the primal kind of fear. ( side note: Primal fear, primal wants, and primal feelings, primal anything in general are a big thematic thing in nge, so it really lingers and comes back even harder in eoe )

Finally for the rest of his personal thoughts on Unit-01, badly summarized bc this is already 2 fucking long thank you to whoever’s still reading LMAOO: Shinji eventually gets used to piloting and tries to push the existential fear of his Eva to the back of his mind, mostly. He always wonders what it is exactly, once admitting that he really doesn’t know anything about Evas while peering into his NERV manual episodes later ( bc NERV is weird about everything and he’s too scared anyone ask past a certain point, ect ). Shinji thinks his Eva smells / feels weirdly calming to him inside despite being scary, but only when his life isn’t in violent danger. Things only suck whenever Unit-01 goes berserk / he loses control somehow / when he finds out certain truths about it. Youknow

On his opinions about Unit-01 aesthetically, I don’t think Shinji has any preferences that make him go ‘YES I totally vibe with this neon genesis green and purple it’s so me’ or anything, he’s just not caught up in the awesome looking giant robot idea at all ( Unlike Kensuke and Asuka ). For example his reaction was just ‘huh? oh... ok. I see?’ at Asuka when they first met when she was showing off shiny and red Unit-02 to him ( which is cool and cooler with a cape ). Confused and serious, I guess that’s Shinji’s attitude towards Evas in general ( minus when he’s not freaking out mhajsja ) and it fits the rest of his mild / boring / unassuming personality— like Kaji and Kaworu both said to his face, he can be clueless about his own position as a pilot and how it affects everyone around him. Like the random girls in his class, lots of people think Shinji’s cool for what he gets to do but to him it’s just a thing he has to do, for the most part.

On a sadder note, makes sense bc the only time we see Shinji enjoying something as a hobby is when he’s playing the cello and smiling, even then he just downplays his talent when asked. I think he would be a lot more passionate about music if his circumstances were better. That probably contributes to why he doesn’t care much about Evas in an aesthetic way either. But I think eventually, he’d come to prefer his own Eva just because of how familiar it would look and feel to him, plus his past experiences with it. Many ones.

Unrelated bonus note!! It’s interesting that Unit-01 is the only Eva with a completely different colour scheme when compared to its respective pilot’s plugsuit— in this case, Shinji’s plugsuit being blue and white instead ( as a side note Unit-13 is also purple and green but Shinji and Kaworu’s plugsuits match this time ) But why purple huh? My guess is that aside from wanting the main character’s giant robot to also stand out bc it’s special and awesome, Yui also wears a purple shirt in one of the later episodes showing a long flashback. That screencap stuck with me, idk why. Purple shirt confirmed in nge holy shit mind blown LOL jk in all seriousness we can only speculate. Maybe Yui’s fav colour was purple and Gendo decided to pay tribute to that when they made the Evas. Whatever headcanon hurts us more!

I think the thing that comes to mind right now is sort of– intuitively knowing/feeling/seeing something in someone and acknowledging how we see that in ourselves too.💕

I think we all sort of start off eyeing someone (celebrity or nah) and without personal/direct interaction – it’s up to our interpretation of ourselves too (what we have, what we feel proud of, what we’re missing) y know? We don’t approach people who feel like they could endanger us, or we’re wary of them ‘hurting’ us by having a set of personality that-- we acknowledge at least on a subconscious extent, might call us out/hurt us y know?💕

Whether we like what we see or not also coincides with what we think/might not acknowledge about ourselves in a way? 💕 I think usually there’s one or two placement/things that stood out for us in the celebrity, and then we reaffirm it again when we check their placement (usually how it goes, we don’t usually check a celebrity placements and go ‘this is it i love them’ or know them from there y know?? the other way around, we know their name/context first usually and then we check the charts maybe) 💕💕

House placements, particularly planets falling into 2nd/8th house is common with these relationships? 💕 Most people might feel like they ‘know’ the celebrity even if they haven’t met them bc we see what they show/express to us and we take it as sincerity/part of them 💕 Strong neptune aspects, Sun/Moon/Venus/Mars are also common. I’d say 3rd, 7th, 1st house aspects are also a thing that might be common too 💕 

Hmmm the one thing we should probably talk about is that not everything is always?? Even, y know? 💕 Like I said, it’s how we see that in ourselves too but that’s not exactly acknowledging the other side of the story: if the person actually see themselves in us as well, y know? 💕

We only acknowledge certain parts, maybe it’s not the whole truths… we don’t actually know everyone in that much of a personal detail, thats why sometimes… im like aaaaah mmmm towards speculating birthtimes or acknowledging something without– proof of birth certificate sometimes (its better to be safe than sorry?) 💕

But yeah, what you were talking about– seeing ourselves in celebrities, I get that 💕 Sometimes its eaaaasy and simple – jus y know, oh this dude’s a capricorn and im a capricorn, so im gonna stan him/protect and bias him too. 

Sometimes it’s being bias wrecked, certain things you might not have noticed/been obvious about yourself and then having to confront that in how the other person reflects/put their energy into being who they are –  we then get confronted with certain things about ourselves (aspects usually) that we did not know could Like That, being activated to Like That. 💕

Common traits in bias list/celebrities might be things we desire in our own life as well, since sometimes its– y know, a reflection of ourselves. Idols can sometimes people we can grow/learn or place ourselves in. Even if we don’t realize/want to think about it like that.

They might be acknowledged as a representation of us, or a ‘better’ us sometimes that we tend to praise, acknowledge, respect and love (better than we do ourselves). The phase ‘do I want to be you or be like you’ is kinda common here, and this line can blur sometimes. But yeah 💕

sometimes I wish I never got involved with my ex. Everything would've been so much different.

I probably wouldn't gotten into a dumb fight with M, ending our friendship. If it wasn't for my ex. Then when we broke up I was still her friend then shit just kept getting worse and worse. And then she did all those fucked up shit to me throughout the years.

But if I didn't get into that fight with M, and I wasn't being such a hardass after it we could've actually worked that out. And I know M would've never let me get harassed and SA by my stalker. I would've protected her heart from guys that never deserved her in the first place. Who knows.... if none of those things happened maybe we would both be happy together, still best friends? I regret everything and the fact it could've been fixed if we actually talked it out . She was literally my ride or die.. I literally miss her everyday of my goddammit life. I wish things were so much different. I miss our time in Jr high, laughing, being the bad kids in school, everyone knowing us. Having people to talk to everyday. Hanging out everyday after school because we lived so close to each other. Walking around with your dog everyday. There wasn't a day we didn't have fun either on videocall getting drunk with stolen booze, being eachothers WCW, having long paragraphs texted to each other and on each other's fb wall, we even slept on video call with each other, the letters we would write each other like "the open when" letters, buying credit card knifes and scalp massager from Amazon youknow stuff Jr high schoolers do. Riding in the back of your moms truck going to the store, You were there for me no matter what, you were there for me and let me cry in your arms when my cat died. We got monsters everyday and I even still have my monster tab collection. (I lost a much but I still have quite a few) I still have my credit card knife... I still have thay shell that you glued red glitter on the top of it. I still have one video of us together from when you posted that one video of us from your dubsmash... I still have that one video we were hiding at the park when we finally got to go to high-school together. I can write a whole book of everything I remember.

It's the truth when I'm saying this, the best years of my life, was when you were in my life.

Yugioh Episode 30 Season 4: The Dead Joey Shuffle

Lets ignore everything happening on planet Earth right now and talk about old ass anime, shall we? Yes, my sky turned a horrible end of the world yellow/orange color for an entire day because of a LOT of fire in my state. But thankfully, the winds have changed, the sky is blue...and I can write about Yugioh again.

Last we left off, Tristan, Tea, and Yami stumbled across two fresh corpses. Now, when Joey died a season or two ago (I honestly can’t remember when), we had my favorite storyboarder at the helm just sweeping emotion all over the field and the intense weeping for Joey Wheeler lasted for like 30 minutes. Yugi freaked out in the puzzle headspace for like half an episode and nearly gave up playing cards again, Yami punched a wall and then put a duel disk on Joey’s arm like a funerary send off to the afterlife, Tea started losing her mind and begged Yugi to drop out of the tourney so Yugi wouldn’t die, and Pharaoh was like “yo Tea, Yugi can’t talk right now can we do this later????” And then Tristan, out of nowhere, just started shaking Joey and screaming at him to wake up (and I think he punched him in the face and it got censored? Yo that episode is wild.) Joey got plugged to some Kaiba Corp med bay that had like 2 dozen weird sensors attached to his chest and feet to keep him alive. Serenity was like hyperventilating in the back, just a LOT of stuff was happening all at once.

But this time, with an ordinary animation team, these three kids are so distracted by the other corpse, that they only cry just a little bit before being like “woah what?”

And like this is their second time. Maybe they’ve gotten used to Joey being dead? Maybe they got it all out of their system and are now a lot more accustomed to the fact that they all must die. Several times.

Confronted with this Agatha Christie brand debacle, Tristan makes an incredible reach that is also completely correct. Like this is such an amazing incredible reach.

Hire Tristan as your detective, hot damn. There are like 7.8 billion Orichalcos-possessed people on this planet right now trying to kill Joey Wheeler and Tristan actually called the right one.

Yami never tells us who he blames, but it’s OK, because the show immediately cuts over to Dartz’ silicon valley fortress to tell us without telling us. So while this animation team isn’t as insanely extra as our previous animation teams, they still know how to edit their cuts to work alongside their dialogue just fine.

Lets take a little while to just take this in. Someone took a while to make it, so rather than look at it for half a second before it passes--please lets count the number of floating streets in this scene.

So before when I talked about the history of San Francisco, I mentioned the old Embarcadero, which was a double decker street wrapped around the peninsula. (we still see parts of this double decker set up on parts of the highway to this day.) But what if--they actually have no idea that the Embarcadero was a thing before it fell down in an earthquake?

What if they just...wanted San Francisco to be vaguely cyberpunk in this universe and that floating freeway was supposed to be futuristic and not just an 80′s throwback?

Because there’s 3 streets stacked on top of eachother right here and yo there is no where in the city built like this. This is a Gotham situation where the poors live on the lower levels and the rich just kind of hang out on the top. We have too many Earthquakes in reality to ever support this setup but Yugioh...wow. They went for it.

Also, our art deco architecture isn’t quite in this style as Dartz’ mansion. Mind you, this isn’t full deco, and the structure has more of an ancient world vibe. But...while San Fransisco does have a lot of deco, it’s just different (sorry you’re not really here for the architecture but youknow, I’m an artist so I do think a lot about why concept artists may have gone where they went)

++++++++++RANT ABOUT SF DECO VS COMIC BOOK DECO FEEL FREE TO SKIP++++++++++++++

So I’m not going to dare say this is a mistake on the Yugioh team by any means, since Deco is Deco and who knows when Dartz built that building. But like I’ve seen the SF skyline many times in this show and it’s got some funky shapes in it that are just sooo off to me. They keep drawing a more Futurist New York. Truth is, we don’t have that many skyscrapers in SF.

Most of the pictures you see of scaling buildings are of this one area around the financial district--everything else is...pretty short. So in those photos they very carefully crop out all the really squat as hell buildings on either side of it, to give the impression that our city is super tall, much like a dating app.

And, as far as Art Deco Gotham-esque skyscrapers go, we got ones like this guy:

Where at a glance it’s like...that’s barely deco (and barely that impressive. This is 1/3 the height of the Empire State building.) Compared to a lot of cities in America, our skyscrapers aren’t as...clearly deco from far away? We don’t have the huge ass humps and long ass gilded lines of the Empire State building or the Chrysler building. You only really get those details when you zoom in.

Our other skyscrapers are kinda understated or modern in comparison. And the reason why we just don’t have many deco skyscrapers is because...our ground ain’t good for building skyscrapers at all, so it took us kind of a while to build up.

Like we got this tower that we built recently (the first skyscraper they built in SF in a good while) and they decided to name it the “The Millennium Tower” which...I know...good job, team, clearly you wanted to get cursed. Well the tower started leaning about 3 or 4 years ago, like well over a foot from it’s original spot, it’s just tilting and sinking away, and people are freaking out because it’s surrounded by other tall buildings so they’re like “damn it we’re gonna dominoes.” The people in charge were like “well...we don’t know why it’s leaning...but I’m sure it’s fine” and it’s like “the ground. It was the ground...you dumbasses” not to mention that it’s clearly cursed by at least one angry Egyptian Ghost but...what do you do?

I would absolutely watch the Yugioh spinoff season about the Millennium Tower and the SF tycoons that got possessed by a ghost and have to play card games to keep their tower from squishing all of San Francisco. Yo you should hire me, Yugioh, I got IDEAS.

Man...Yugioh predicting the future, how did they call the ill fate of The Millennium Tower????

But anyway, most skyscrapers in SF are kind of boring because they have to be sturdy as hell. But, they have some neat modern shapes (like the Transamerica Pyramid--in the shape of A PYRAMID that hasn’t shown it’s face once this entire Egyptian influenced anime)

I mean, come on Yugioh, it’s right there.

Also the hell is this weird UFO on this picture I lifted off of google?

I may have lifted this from an alien website, so forgive me, q-anon for lifting your image, I’m trying to talk about architecture in my Yugioh blog.

In fact the only building I (and google) can think of that is both really tall and deco-ey is this one:

And it’s a Marriot hotel built in the late 80′s. And honestly, it looks way more 1980′s Las Vegas than it does Deco. (It honestly looks like photobashing but made real, this is a weird building.)

And I could be wrong and overlooking a very important structure, but most of the city’s really cool art deco buildings are in the form of theaters, libraries, churches, schools, and houses--which are only a few stories tall. They’re gorgeous buildings with cool and different silhouettes, it’s just not very big.

Like I believe this is an old high school?

also a lot of our “art deco” has no idea if it’s victorian, deco, or art noveau so they’ll just hit all of it to see what sticks. It’s a lot more eclectic than other places where Deco is typically more...straight-lined. I kinda hate defining art styles as masculine or feminine but honestly it’s the quickest way to really hit home the difference between a Bruce Timm art deco that you’d see in a comic book, (which is very New York inspired) and what we have in San Fransisco which is really decorative and decadent.

The Yugioh SF just has no curvy nonsense and that really sticks out to me.

Ornate swirls get shoved Everywhere. Willy nilly. Just everywhere randomly. And it sits next to other structures that are modern and simplistic. It’s very San Francisco to have this old world next to new world.

And it makes sense. SF is the other side of the continent from New York, and about as far West as you can go from the movement going on in Europe. So...we made our own take and tl;dr the art deco in our city doesn’t look like Gotham at all.

And, while it’s not as grand or dark or iconic, it’s a good thing. It’s what helps make San Fransisco look really unique compared to other American cities--the fact that we're...short and eclectic. Our district with the skyscrapers is where it’s kinda boring, actually--the good stuff is when you get away from that. Where every little building has a spunky wild personality.

But in a show like this you gotta make it seem more grand and less homely so--they scaled up the buildings a lot more than we really have and homogenized all the stylings into one (and they axed every Victorian swirl because they don’t want to draw that). They really just turned SF into comic book New York--especially since I’ve only seen like...one steep hill since we got here.

It’s fine, and it makes complete sense why they did it, (I’m more confused as to why most of California is a Nevada desert so I can easily forgive a San Francisco without the right Deco) it’s just a very different energy.

and honestly...it’s an energy influenced by the tone of the show. Everything has a very dark blue-gray palate, and it’s because it’s literally the end of the world, Joey has died, everyone is sad...maybe it would be out of place to have a building that looks like it sparks joy? The harsh and cold lines do add to the gravity of the situation.

Maybe I would have done the same thing? In the end, the legibility of your story matters more than the accuracy of your story--especially when it comes to TV. Which is somewhat a controversial statement, and there’s exceptions when it comes to cultural stuff. But while the culture of San Fransisco was erased (a culture that they did draw in the beginning of the season! they did show alcatraz, a trolly, and the golden gate!), it is at a point in the show where...all of humanity is being erased anyway. Could also be symbolic? Maybe?

So anyway, stepping away from lovely buildings and into this gross ass abandoned park, Yami decides he’s gotta get himself to this gaudy ass Batman building ASAP.

He can ride a horse but he absolutely will not ride a motorcycle. Or touch Joey Wheeler’s dead body.

Which is wild because apparently there’s a Yugioh spinoff where all they do is ride motorcycles??? But from what I heard, Yami is not in it. Which is the most wild thing.

So uh...you know how much I love art details, lets take a long look at this one.

I hate this logo. It looks like an emperor penguin’s eyebrow thingies. Like a face with just four huge eyebrows.

Not sure why we randomly have a new logo. It’s nearly the end of the season, we’ve already shown the Orichalcos logo so many times. Was this episode made earlier in development than the rest? Is that why there were like - I dunno, put this random logo here... Maybe we’ll figure out the rest of the logo later?

I don’t know. This weird logo feels so out of place.

And then because I’m thinking about buildings...maybe it’s influenced by our Shell building?

Maybe? Or not? Just saying you got a round thing with radial lines hovering over a trellis...the possibility is there that they were inspired but had to edit it down for animation? Eh, I’m reaching desperately for anything that looks like San Francisco at this point.

Anyways, the front door of this building is an elevator (????) and in a somewhat confusing set of cuts, out of this elevator comes the murderer herself.

And she’s dead.

SO HAPPY I didn’t have to watch that card game but like...c’mon. There’s no way Mai would lose to Raphael.

Maybe that’s why they couldn’t show it? Because she’s the only person on this show who uses a themed deck with cards that actually sync with eachother? (outside of Pegasus’ toon deck and Grandpa’s voltron deck ((sorry it’s name isn’t voltron, I’ve forgotten the name of the robot that you build out of other cards. Exodus? Exodysseus?

So Yami goes into this elevator instead of anticipating that this is obviously a trap. Like most would just decide to take the stairs instead, but Yami loves falling for a good obvious trap every once and a while (or, in the case of this season--each and every single time a trap is placed in front of him) and so this takes him directly to the fightclub roof of yore.

Ah. We started this season on fightclub roof, in like...2010 or whenever I started this season. Feels like forever ago. How long has the year of 2020 been? 20 years of my life? 40 years of my life? Was I in fact never born before 2020 started? I honestly don’t remember anymore who I was before this year happened. Probably because I inhaled just a hell ton of wildfire smoke and now my brain is a bunch of jelly beans rattling around in a jar.

Anyway, Raphael just hands Yami (by hands I mean throws aggressively) Joey’s dragon card.

A little unsure why he’d do this since...this is the weapon to destroy Dartz. Why are you giving it back to the Pharaoh? But apparently, Raphael did that to prove that he is the murderer of Mai, who murdered Joey and...youknow...the stuff that we know but would be pretty difficult for the people in this show to follow.

Mai’s voice actor seeing “Mumbo-Jumbo” and being like “Well if I’m doing this, I’m going to commit.“

WE ARE NEVER DUELING DARTZ.

I refuse that a duel with Dartz, in fact, ever happens in this season.

Kind of surprised whenever I see there’s still people left. SF is basically abandoned in comparison.

Thing is...that’s just SF on a holiday weekend.

And then, because Tristan’s in the middle of the street, the rest of the party has to try and run him over.

It is really funny to me that Seto went out of his way to ditch these people so MANY times, but keeps ending up around them again and again, and each time in a wildly different vehicle, each and every time it’s when these guys need a lift...he’s very quickly turning into the group’s soccer mom. Should’ve gotten a minivan.

And then this happens?

I’m sure that fanfic writers everywhere rejoiced when Seto reached out a hand to catch Joey’s face from hitting the pavement. In all this was a bizarre animation and now that I’ve figured out my blender settings for the new update, I can finally cap little segments again.

Just don’t you dare flag me, tumblr. Hopefully segments less than 10 seconds long are fine.

Like there was this part where they had to just drag around Joey’s corpse over this rail, and it was Mokuba and Tristan just prying him up there like he were a potato sack and like...

...Joey’s gonna wake up with so many rail-shaped bruises! They do not treat him gently!

Then back on fightclub roof, Raphael made me do a bit of a double take when he accidentally implied the existence of another bean within that Pharaoh bean.

And no, Bakura did not show up at this point.

I would LOVE IT if Pharaoh biffed it a second time and Bakura suddenly took the reigns and was like “Oi loves! that was bloody easy!” but I...have a feeling that this team didn’t actually watch the episodes where Bakura is just vibing in that puzzle piece.

If this never comes back to bite Pharaoh in the ass...

It might never come back guys...I don’t know. How do these writers have this much self control to ignore Bakura for like a full season. How do you do it? I can’t hold a plot twist in for even like 5 seconds. How....how do you do it?

Anyways, now that Seto has Tea who has a map, they walk up to the entrance (I honestly forgot if they drove or walked because knowing this show, Seto would absolutely ignore the car. Either way, the Ferrari isn’t necessary anymore. Written right out of the script. Cars are hard to draw. Get rid of it)

You know, Mokuba’s seen an awful lot of corpses for a kid! Like 20ish corpses if you count the 2 times the Big 5 biffed it. Really should have left him with Rebecca! Youknow, the other kid the same age as him!

But it’s fine, we gotta train Mokuba to suppress that trauma deep, deep down like a proper Kaiba.

Youknow when I started this series I was like “I don’t get why everyone talks about the Kaibas so much, these two seem kinda like whatever” but now I’m on like S4 and like...I’m SO concerned about the Kaibas. With Yugi...whatever...he’s gonna be fine, but the Kaibas? Oh boy. Either one of them could go completely evil and I’d buy it.

And probably root for them.

And I know they won’t go full tilt, I’m pretty sure--but like...they COULD. I can’t say that about the rest of the cast.

My drought senses are screaming, is that a huge ass water tower the size of a 4 story building next to Tea? Chances are, it’s got a jet in it or something because this is Yugioh, but...man. At least it doesn’t look like one of those rusty New York rooftop water towers. This show just completely not getting what SF looks like.

Whatever, he can resurrect the leviathan, maybe Dartz can make water?

Youknow, all you have to do to make California worship you forever is make rain. Screw this lizard nonsense. The man can power water. What’s he doing with this stupid snake?

But youknow, Yugioh just never really figures out how to harness the weather. They CAN and they do it all the time. But, do they use it for their benefit? Like freakin never.

Mindfulness of your own knowing. . Sometimes the only guidance we need is our own. . The world can say all sorts ‘la la la la laaaa (bla blaaa)’ and sometimes what it says is useful... . And sometimes (sometimes) what we need, actually (actually) (in actual fact) is to get still, get quiet and listen to our Own Knowing. Sometimes nothing else will do. . If this is the case for you - I invite you to meditate, sweet one. For one minute or twenty, whatever takes your fancy. Set a timer, sit comfy, close your eyes and let the attention come to the movement of your belly as you breathe. . #andbreathe . And when the mind wanders (and it will wander) gently bring the attention back to the movement of the belly as you inhale and exhale. This is not about stopping thought but about choosing to let thoughts go, for a period of time. Let them pass like trains on a track. . And the funny (magical) thing about doing so... is that what comes through... in the spaces where we let our trains of thought run on (without giving chase) is Our Truth.
