The comics website Broken Frontier announced the winners of their annual awards earlier this month, with ND Stevenson’s Substack comic I’m Fine I’m Fine Just Understand taking the prize in the webcomics category. Stevenson was up against an impressive array of webcomics, including Buuza!! by Shazleen Khan (pictured above); Drowse by Frank Verano, Nick Klinger, Jaime Huxtable and Taylor Esposito; Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe; and Ragwort Wood by Sarah Gordon — all of which are worth a click, so check them out.

- communism. I'm not just saying it when I mean that I believe with all my heart in solidarity bringing a better world.

- star wars, esp prequel/tcw and original trilogy. i like most of it other than the sequels though! bo-katan and obikin are my favourites <3

- star trek, tos/tng/ds9 especially. but i love all of it! enterprise apologist, julian bashir, miles o'brien, kira nerys and jadzia dax lover. all combinations of mcspirk also shipped here!

- babylon 5, ivanova saving my life every day

- big stardew valley player, especially modded! huge east scarp fan. would die for eloise

- also a huge magic the gathering player (unfortunately). will look at your edh decks any time

- not a huge fallout player right this moment but i would die for dogmeat

- reading! I love star wars books and comics but also love sci-fi fantasy literary fiction and occasional nonfiction! some books i've read lately that I loved were becky chambers' wayfarers series, this is how you lose the time war, and uprooted. one of my favourite comics in the world is buuza!!! by shazleen khan (can be found on tapas!)

- writing as well, I write a bit (ao3 ilnyarienici) but most of it is poetry in the notes app of my phone. I love poetry in general as well <3

- art, drawing, painting, building. I love drawing buildings in school and fanart and cute animal paintings, literally all art keeps me alive. art reflecting the human soul and also just nice art. and to me building a home that will last more lifetimes than I can imagine is art too :)

- animals and nature, I love nature and animals especially my two cats and sweet cows running onto the grass in the spring and elephants thriving in the wild jungle and sweet bunnies in sanctuaries :)

Happy WBW! If you're not sure what the changes are, do you have ideas about the areas you want to change? Or maybe why do you feel like you want to change your world? I love hearing about the development so please, don't be afraid to get lengthy ^^ !

aaa thank you for the question ^-^ I apologize in advance, I typed this while my nails were drying so this is going to be my most agonizingly slow WPM by far.

So I'm almost afraid to say which world it is out loud just because y'all have seen a lot of it and I always feel this invisible rule of "no take backs" once you utter things into canon (which of course sounds RIDICULOUS but I'm sure y'all can relate to imposing fake rules/standards on yourselves that you'd never expect anyone else to adhere to, BUT)

This world is 6-8 years old. It's old, in terms of a younger writer's work. It's about as old as I've been seriously writing for. And before it was a real world, think of it more as like a "folder" that I stuck all of my fantasy characters in. It was too big and too broad, and a lot of the worldbuilding came from trying to sew a lot of disparate parts together into a cohesive work. And for the most part, I did a pretty good job, but I've always envied stories that are smaller, tighter, that don't feel the need to have infinite, sweeping worlds because they've focused on what they need and want to tell the story/stories that they want to, and it's damn good. Some that come to mind are honestly my own, Hill to Die On (what can I say, it's helped me grow as a writer), as well as Buuza (Tapas), Muted (Webtoon), The Language of Flowers, Welcome to Night Vale, and OneShot. I just love that all of these, whether comics, books, or even podcasts and videos games, imparted to me a world that could be infinitely expanded, but often relied on fans reading between the lines and not being spoonfed everything to notice the details.

Plus, since HtDO made me mature as a writer, it really left me with a conundrum: continue building a haphazard world that doesn't bring me joy, or significantly overhaul it (even maybe into several worlds/stories) so that it can make me happy again.

Anyway, the "why do you want" is now covered, as for the "what do I want to change"... Everything?

I can't be sure yet, but I'd like to:

Trim down the vast amount of species, since I'm not "one species = one culture" and having 12+ species, each with their own regional differences and cultures, is a LOT

Consolidate the religions/lore categories

Start again with a smaller, more focused plot that isn't so grand and haphazard in scope

Maybe overhaul/fine tune the government and realms? I no longer like the idea of fae living normally among people. kinda takes the fae part of it out of them. And I'd like those in charge to be more fine-tuned as well.

I'm always so worried to share advertisements for my books on Tumblr! I feel like tumblr is definitely more a creative space, but I wanted to try and advertise this in as many places as possible.

I usually make a new book for BUUZA!! every year, but this year I'm taking a break to focus more on new projects that pay (lol) and promoting Saving Sunshine. But that means I have 3 events on this year which I have 0 stock for...

So grabbing the unfortunate interest of one famous James Hardford sure wasn't part of her plans, especially when he thinks (like everyone else apparently) she's a boy!

ahhh !! tbh ive never read lore olympus LOL but here are some of my faves!! theyre all either on webtoon (w) tumblr (tu) or the tapas app (t) please message me if you want trigger warnings for any of these <3

here are some popular ones i love:

check please (tu) feel good, romance, slice of life !! about a figure skater turned hockey player navigating friendships, his sexuality, and life as a college student. 4 volumes and completed 

heartstopper (t) (tu) (w) slice of life, romance, gets a bit dark at some points. follows two teenage boys, charlie and nick, at an all boys school! 5 volumes and ongoing 

long exposure (t) a nerd and a bully are forced to work on a project together and find they’ve developed powers! fantasy, adventure. planned 1 volume but currently ongoing

some of my favourites:

humour me (t) (w) follows a high school senior whose taking care of her 4 year old brother and crosses paths with a teenager celebrity. chaos ensues. slice of life, feel good, ongoing

buuza!! (t) (w) is set in the 90s in an urban fantasy middle east/central asia and focuses on found family, webs of relationships, mythology, and religion! slice of life, fantasy, ongoing

green & gold (t) (w) slice of life, coming of age, ongoing! follows the lives of teenagers at a german boarding school where every 7th grader gets paired with a 10th grader for a year long project

out of the blue (t) (w) (tu) is about a merman trapped in a lake who befriends a blind dam worker. slice of life, fantasy, ongoing !

rock and riot (t) (tu) essentially a queer retelling of grease!! sweet, coming of age, feel good. completed with 3 volumes 

tl;dr: i would really recommend checking out check please first (since its one of the most popular webcomics recently !) and then get hooked on some of the ongoing ones :)

So since were talking about avas demon and lore Olympus , can I recommend a webtoon that seems actually good? There’s this comic on WEBTOON called ‚BUUZA!!‘ (yes in all caps and with exclamation marks) that’s set in a fantasy middle eastern/north African country with magic and urban fantasy elements. It’s pretty slow paced so idk exactly what’s going on yet but it’s nice and seems made with care! Also I’m pretty sure it’s in the fantasy 60s/70s-ish , or at least it seems like it so that cool too
