“are you absolutely certain you want your memories erased?” hatori asks with concern laced in his voice, his hand hovering above your head.

you weakly gaze up at akito from where you were outside, her dark eyes pass straight through you without a single ounce of remorse. in the far distance, you can hear yuki’s footsteps growing closer and closer, desperately searching the estate for you.

hatori sighs when yuki’s cries turn into pleas that echo off the hollow walls.

“y/n?! please, where are you? don’t do this, i—i need you.” he screams, his voice breaking as he helplessly wanders around.

“yes, please.” you mumble, a tear running down your cheek as you stare blankly at akito. she raises a brow, and with an evil grin, she doesn’t bother to break eye contact.

darkness. your unconscious body falls backward and hatori catches you before you hit the ground, brushing some of your hair back.

yuki stands frozen next to akito as he watches your lifeless body collapse into hatori’s arms. his knees thud to the ground, bruises sure to form on the affected area, while tears stream down his face and onto the already damp grass below.

akito tsks, “i told you yuki, she can’t love you the way i do.” she rolls her eyes at his attempt of defiance, returning back to her house.

yuki shook his head, gripping at the grass with trembling fingers. akito was right; you couldn’t love him like she did. because you loved him better. so much better than anyone ever could.

“i’m going to take her home now,” hatori says, standing to his feet with you in his arms.

your face glistens in the unsuspecting moonlight, skin glowing more than ever. “no,” yuki begins, “i’ll take her home myself.�� he sadly announces, holding out his arms for you.

against his better judgment, hatori allows him to do this, gently handing you to him with ease.

from the second story of her room, akito’s eyes follow the both of you until you’re out of sight, the feeling of remorse completely absent from her mind.

yuki brushes a tear away from your cheek. his bottom lip quivering as he scans over your delicate features in an attempt to memorize them.

“i’m so sorry y/n,” he whimpers, “you didn’t deserve this.” another one of his tears drops onto your face, staining your beauty.

he leans down and places a gentle kiss on your lips, it’s light and it wasn't enough for him, but he knows it’ll have to suffice for now. yuki can’t even bring himself to fake a smile as he nears your house, knowing these were the last few moments he had with you.

“i’m never giving up on us,” he breathes, his panicky cries becoming more frequent as he can’t contain his sobs anymore.

“…i will find you again. i promise.”

yuki’s eyes burn as the bright morning sun shines through his curtains. the memory of you plagues his dreams, like a nightmare he could never escape. he runs a hand through his silver hair, the constant sadness looming in his chest even years after.

the first day of his second year of college came sooner than he anticipated as he glanced over at his bedside clock and the time read 10:28.

shit.

he springs out of bed, rushing to simultaneously gather all of his supplies and get dressed and ready. before heading for the door, he slips the promise ring you had gotten for him on his ring finger, just as he did every day.

yuki steps onto the train, slightly out of breath from running. he sighs when he hears the familiar sound, just like in high school, the girls never failed to provide him with unwanted attention. so following close behind him were a group of his female classmates swarming him like bees to honey.

flattered as he may be, yuki does his best to politely decline their advances. “i’m sorry ladies, i’m just not inter—“

yuki’s sentence stopped abruptly when he glanced outside the train window, and there you stood. bag slung over your shoulder, y/h/c blowing in the gentle breeze as you read the train route map. all the overlapping voices of morning commuters and fangirls fade until they’re dulled, sounding as if they were in another room and all he could focus on is you.

his breath hitches in his throat, his eyes transfixed on your silhouette as you sit on the nearest bench, making yourself comfortable.

for a second he believes he’s hallucinating, perhaps the universe is torturing him once again with another dream of you. that this may be too good to be true, just another cruel joke by forces outside of his control, but no. you’re here, sitting a mere couple of yards from him.

most likely from the intensity of his stare, you look up, directly staring into his eyes despite the distance between you. yuki’s heart drops in his chest as you offer a small, innocent smile that has his mind racing a million miles a minute.

before he can exit the train, it takes off, sending him speeding in the opposite direction, knocking him back into reality. the fangirls remain at his side, but the entire train ride his mind is far from here.

bidding farewell to all the girls that had followed him, he finds himself too lost in thought to greet haru or momiji, completely forgetting about the urgency of getting to the class he was late for and slips his way to his first lecture hall seemingly undetected.

there's chatter when he enters, his presence enough to make the classroom stir, which the professor didn't mind either. yuki takes his seat, absent-mindedly pulling out his materials.

his head pound with so many questions.

how could this be happening? how were you here?

the last yuki heard you had moved away, unexpectedly, the day after everything happened. away from him.

“settle students, settle down. as i was saying, i’d like to introduce my teaching assistant for the semester: y/n. be nice to her, it’s her first year as a teaching instructor.” the professor instructs.

yuki’s head shoots up and there you are, once again, same gorgeous smile, waving to the class.

your eyes trace back to meet him, causing yuki’s cheek to tint a rosy pink. he can’t keep your gaze as that interaction alone reminded him of the first time you met.

the remainder of the class is spent stealing glances from each other, glances that last too long to be anything but familiar. and for a while, yuki believes he's going crazy. driving himself insane for no other reason besides love, or maybe, just maybe, you recognize him too.

when the instructor dismisses the class, of which yuki had spent most of the time admiring you, he stays behind. he wasn’t exactly sure why, he didn’t even know if he should approach you, but he didn’t want to just leave.

you pack up and recollect with the professor, until only you and yuki are left in the room. and you don’t fail to notice his presence either, the tension growing stronger the longer you two sit in silence.

“uh—excuse me,” you say, just as you finish gathering your things.

yuki gasps, caught off guard by your willingness to speak to him. although, it makes him giggle on the inside knowing that your first ever interaction began the same way too.

“yes? i’m sorry, did you need something?” he asks with pleading eyes. yuki didn’t know what you were going to say, but he almost pities himself with how desperate he must sound just aching to be able to talk to you

you shake your head, “oh no, i wanted to apologize.”

his head tilts with confusion, “apologize for what?”

giggling, a sneaky red tint fills your face.

the sound of your laughter is euphoric, yuki convinced himself that he’d never be able to hear the heavenly sound again, but here he was, basking in all its glory.

“i wanted to apologize if i made you uncomfortable with my staring during class, you just remind me of someone, but i can’t remember who,” you explain with a frazzled expression.

yuki knows it’s selfish to ever even attempt to remind you of the love you once shared. what kind of boyfriend would he be to put you through that again, so he says nothing for a moment.

but, he was never one to give up so easily.

“don’t worry about it, could i buy you some tea or perhaps lunch? maybe we can get to know each other? if you’re not busy, of course” he suggests, the words escaping past his lips before he has a chance to stop them.

you enthusiastically nod your head and yuki can’t help but feel the pink blush remain warm and present on his face.

your purity remained and possibly flourished as time passed on, even when he was no longer in your life. but he didn’t expect anything less, yuki knew he loved you for a reason.

“i’m still in school myself, but i was recommended to be a teaching assistant for this class because of my previous success in the course. it was a little scary, but i think i can manage,” you continue, rambling on even after yuki asked you just one question, but he doesn’t mind.

his face softens, staring at you with half-lidded eyes and a loving smile.

he doesn’t understand what he’s done to deserve this, to have you back into his life; a second chance with you.

“pardon me ms.y/l/n, may i see you in my office for a moment?” a professor asks as he walks past the two of you.

“of course sir! just give me one moment please,” you request, pulling a marker from your backpack. “sorry, i have to go, but maybe we could have lunch another time?” you say with a soft smile pulling yuki’s hand.

“oh—oh, yes! of course, that sounds lovely,” he stutters, flustered by the sudden contact.

you scribble something down on his hand, your delicate touch sends shockwaves through his body.

“okay, i’ll see you later yuki,” you smile, leaning up to place a kiss on his cheek.

yuki freezes for a moment, watching you exit the hallway, his mouth open slightly agape. he brings his shaky hand up into view and his eyes widen at the message you left him directly under your phone number.

‘thank you for waiting for me yuki’

and when he thinks back for a moment, he realizes he never even told you his name.

5. not at all! I was born in the year of the horse, so maybe that's part of why I felt such a disconnect with Rin at first.

8. I have to go with Chapter 88 (the Cinderella-ish play)! I know I already gave the corresponding episode as my favorite, but it's just SO GOOD! It's hilarious and heartbreaking and has beautiful character moments for much of the main cast. It's almost a credo statement for the series. And Hiroshi's brilliant narration is the cherry on top!

12. The fabulous Yukeru writers on Ao3 have me shipping them. Same for the YukiKyo (? what's their ship name?) writers. And I've really come to love some of the rarepairs I'm writing for my longfic Bloom Within Us. I'll put them under a cut down below for those curious.

13. Ooh, this is such a good question! Right now, I think my answer would be Momiji & Kyo because of the series I just finished writing. I have a soft spot for Yuki & Kakeru, of course, and Yuki & Haru, as well as Tohru & Arisa & Saki. I also really enjoy Kyo's sibling-esque dynamic with Arisa.

18. Ok, to combine 18 and 20, here are two hot takes that sort of deal with character headcanons. Let me know if you want to hear headcanons for someone else, or more fleshed out hc for these characters.

I think my hottest take is that Tohru needed Kyo more than he needed her. I don't think she had anyone she let her walls down for beyond him; not even her best friends. Kyo at least had Kazuma, and he was pretty candid with Momiji, too. Tohru regularly refused to let people take care of her (except for Kyo), and she would've been trapped in her grief & unable to move forward without him. Kyo would've struggled, and he may not have survived, but while they both would've had friends, he would've at least had a loving parent who would've done anything for him.

While Bloom Within Us ultimately has a positive outcome for Kyo after Tohru dies, I've been thinking about writing a sort of companion piece where Kyo dies and Tohru has to grieve him. I believe that would be a much sadder story, especially with the timing related to her processing her grief for her mother and choosing to move forward with Kyo. We saw in the hospital arc how hard of a time she was having just thinking he rejected her. She'd also struggle with how the other cursed Sohmas - some of her dearest friends - treated/viewed him, and that might create a rift between her and her new found family. If he disappeared, I just don't think she'd be able to cope.

It's also probably a hot take that Shigure only gets as much hate as he does because a) people take aspects of the manga seriously that Takaya never intended us to take seriously (like his "high school girls" song. Creepy, yes, but that's a Takaya problem, not a Shigure problem.) and b) he's so full of self-loathing that he says he's not "kind" and "the worst kind of man" and people take him seriously for some reason. If you actually look at his "unkind" actions, they consist of a) speaking honestly and directly to Akito without first fawning over her, b) actually trying to break the curse (sure, he and Hatori and others refer to it as "using" Tohru, but the way he was "using" her was to try and help the younger Zodiacs form strong bonds outside the curse and to house a lonely, homeless teen), and c) sometimes asking insensitive questions or speaking uncomfortable truths. And yes, he was cold to Mayu, and yes, he slept with Ren (which is maybe the most bananas thing that happens in Furuba), and yes, he fucks with people for his entertainment (especially Mitsuru and Mayu, though, again, Takaya signals we're not supposed to take that seriously). But then we see him trying to cheer Hatori up by bringing him to the lake house, or giving Kyo guidance (and a place to live) from the day he appears, or removing Yuki from Akito's abuse, or using his cunning to get Tohru to relax and have fun, or at least stop stressing so much.

I truly think his speech about kindness came from self-hatred and not from some deeply-held belief about the meaninglessness of things like kindness. I think his speech about being the worst kind of man was again from self-loathing and not something he was proud of. And when he provoked Tohru about Kyo, I also think that was borne of his self-loathing and guilt over how the Zodiac viewed the cat.

Anyway, I know you aren't a Shigure hater, so this probably isn't terribly controversial to you. 😅

Oh, also, I read Arisa as straight. She totally gives me queer vibes, but the fact that she likes Kureno because he reminds her of Tohru, yet she doesn't like Tohru that way... I see that as confirming her straightness, tbh. (I still love AUs where she and Saki are together! They're cute!)

Rarepairs in Bloom Within Us below the cut! (These could be read as answers to 18/20, too!)

Yusuke and Kagura get together in chapter 32, and Hiroshi and Momiji finally get together in chapter 67. In Bloom Within Us, mourners sort of converge around Kyo due to his closeness to Tohru and help him through his initial grieving period. This leads to a situation where Kyo kind of slowly becomes the center of the Sohma family, hosting regular group dinners at the dojo and becoming close (to a degree) with all the formerly cursed Sohmas. Since he always was close with Momiji and Kagura, it made sense to me that he might connect them with Hiroshi and Yusuke. I don't give Yusuke and Kagura a lot of focus, but Hiroshi is basically the second protagonist of my story, and the relationship between him and Momiji (and Hiroshi's development to be ready for a relationship with Momiji) is one of the most important subplots. I've really grown to love them, and might write some more content with them just because I adore them so much. (And Yusuke and Kagura are cute together! But I'm not really interested in exploring them any more.)

I haven't written the chapter where Kyo and Saki get together, but yeah, Kyo ends up with Saki.

I always read Saki as having repressed romantic feelings for Tohru. Due to her extreme loyalty and her powerful wave-reading abilities, I think she'd catch Tohru's message to Kyo (to keep moving forward) and ensure she passed it on first opportunity, thus saving his life. And I think Kyo, with his people skills and unfortunate familiarity with grief, would be the one to figure out how Saki felt about Tohru.

In my story, Kyo has to first decide to live. Once he truly does that, he starts pursuing a future as a karate instructor, realizes blaming himself for everything only hurts the people who care about him, and finally decides to allow himself to fall in love again. He's already in love with Saki by this point, and has been for a while, but he's a dumbass about love and it takes him a while longer to realize how he feels, and even longer to decide to do anything about it.

I think it's possible to read Kyo and Saki as having sexual tension in canon. That plus them playing the prince and Cinderella in Cinderella-ish makes them a fun couple to explore.

Anyway, I think there's a strong case these couples would get together in a universe where Tohru dies, but not in any other universe.

"Yo! Yuki!" The soon to be student council president stopped in the hallway turned around seeing a girl with (h/c) hair that was pulled up in a ponytail with a soccer ball in her hands.

"Oh. Y/n, hello," Yuki greeted her with a smile. "Heading to soccer practice I see."

"Yep! Today soccer, tomorrow track, and I go to karate on Fridays." Y/n exclaimed to the boy.

Y/n and Yuki have been friends since they were first years. Y/n was the only girl who has the balls to talk to him given his status as the Prince of their school.

Y/n, however didn't care as much. She found Yuki to be interesting in her opinion and when Y/n finds someone interesting, she's gotta talk to them.

"You sure have a lot on your plate. Please remember to take care of yourself, y/n." Yuki said with smile but he couldn't help but be concerned.

"Don't worry, Yuki. I'm not as careless as you think I am." She said.

Yuki figured as much, frowning he cursed at himself for worrying. She's never careless with her health what was he thinking, she's an athlete after all.

"Right, sorry about that." Yuki apologized smiling nervously.

"Nah, it's fine. It was kinda sweet. I take it as a reminder to eat healthy and take breaks when I need it. And not to push myself too hard. So, thanks for that, Yuki!" Y/n said smiling towards him.

Yuki blushed a light pink as he looked away hiding his face in his arm. "You're welcome.." He said back.

"Anyways, Yuki, I heard that you were becoming student council president." Y/n said.

"Oh, yes, I am." Yuki said.

"I just hope it goes will. Good luck with the council stuff." Y/n said giving him a thumbs up.

Yuki smiled softly at her. "Thank you, Y/n." He said.

"No prob. Well, I should get going, don't wanna be late or I'll have to run laps. Which I don't mind, but still. See ya, Yuki! I hope you'll make time for me when you become president!" Y/n said running off leaving Yuki to his thoughts.

"I'll always have time for you, Y/n."

Fruits Basket Sticker Collection (2008) Scans

Fruits Basket (FB) is one of my all time favorite shoujo manga, and I was so excited to get my hands on an unused copy of this sticker book from 2008!

This main trio makes me so nostalgic. And the Tokyopop logo is SO iconic.

I've always been more of a digital consumer of manga, so I initially read Fruits Basket entirely online from fan-made and fan-translated scans.

I have very fond memories of coming home from school every night and logging onto the family computer to binge as many chapters of FB as I could before dinner. One day my dad gave me his old laptop, since I was the one mostly hogging the family computer.

I was SO excited.

I immediately made my background Shigure themed.

I liked Shigure a lot since he was the year of the dog, just like me.

And you bet I spent all my free time on my clunky early 2000s hand-me-down laptop binging the FB manga, watching the FB anime (in three parts on YouTube, of course), and consuming every FB fanfic and fanart I could find online.

All that to say, this manga holds a special place in my heart. I find myself going back every couple of years and re-reading it.

It truly is such a quintessential y2k shoujo experience.

Even though this book is titled as a sticker book, it contains more than stickers. As seen in the tagline on the front page, this book also includes pin-ups and temporary tattoos.

Not sure why they only have stickers in the title, I guess that's just more of an attention grabber than pin-ups or temporary tattoos would be.

This book has a hard cover and spiral-bound pages. Because of this, it was actually a bit tricky to scan.

I was able to crop out the spiral for most of the pages, as it wouldn't interfere with the overall image of the page, but I did keep it visible on the title page scan.

Every time I tried cropping it for this page, I felt it took too much away from Kyo's portrait.

So I just let it be.

The first part of the book consists of "pin-ups" of Tohru and the Sohma family.

I will say, pin-up is a bit of an odd word to use. I think something like 'mini posters' would've worked as a better descriptor for what is actually inside the book.

I think most Western audiences associate the word "pin-up" with the image of a sexualized or risqué photo.

But in this case, I think it's meant innocently as a picture that can be "pinned up" on a wall...even though that's basically the same reason for the name behind the the sexualized photos...

Either way, it's a bit funny when it's brought up in a PG setting.

Anyways, the pin-up photos in the book are all loose inside clear paper protector sheets. I think it's a neat, thoughtful way to make the pictures safe and accessible.

Ignore the cafalla.com watermark - that was from when I had a .com blog! But it is still me, and this is still my photo lol.

It's a bit hard to tell from the photo, but these pictures are in plastic sheet protectors, and you can slide the paper in and out from the side.

If you wanted to take a specific picture out, you needn't worry about ripping or ruining them while trying to remove them from the book.

So I really appreciate that detail.

Because of this, scanning these pages was an easy experience. The front page of the "pin-up" depicts art of the character from the manga, and the back of the page has a little bio about the character.

As for the Sohma family, they are the same, except they also show a little drawing of their animal form on the back.

The book continues with pages for each member of the Sohma family, plus Akito.

I'm surprised Tohru's friends Arisa and Saki weren't included, as they are also pretty frequently appearing characters...more so than some of the family members.

I really adore that the manga art was used for this whole book. The original anime has that early 2000s charm, but I much prefer the manga artwork for this series.

We're going to see a lot of it with the stickers and temporary tattoos, which follow the pin-up photos.

I'm not sure why, but all the sticker and temporary tattoo pages have a similar layout (which you will see), with the exception of this one sticker page.

Not sure why this one page has a cell phone theme and TONS of tiny stickers, but it's cute!

Again, this was a page where it was hard to cut out the spiral without cutting off parts of the stickers located closed to it. So I left it in the scan.

And like I said, I love that this is all artwork from the manga.

My favorite is the group sticker on the green sheet, where Tohru is wearing the red plaid skirt.

I vividly remember that chapter spread because I adored her outfit. Black, red, and plaid aren't really colors/patterns Tohru wears, and I think they compliment her so much. I also adored how all the boys' outfits matched the same color scheme and aesthetic.

The mild guilt and unease simmers in their gut as they simply w a t c h the silver haired boy from afar. Angel knows that they really shouldn't get caught s p e a k i n g with any of the zodiac members, especially not Y u k i -- the poor thing has suffered enough and has his freedom (to a degree) and they would rather not get the lad in trouble. Even if it was the r o y a l doing the approaching, the head covered in rose-colored locks is sure the Sohma's likely would manage a way to harm the child hosting the r a t .

So for now, Angel stays at a distance, following behind while keeping an e y e on the boy. The royal liked to keep tabs on those chosen by the zodiac, even if they were 'strongly recommended' to cease all contact. Let's just h o p e they're able to stay under the radar from others-- because it certainly seems like Angel has been spotted by the s i l v e r . Shit-- running away doesn't seem like a smart idea, as that would possibly unsettle Yuki.. a stranger, in essence, stalking you-- which that is not what they were doing! I realize overtime, over the course of my 26 years of living, that I have a particular type when it comes to celebrities and fictional characters. This includes both men and women, but I will start with the men.

I love men who are ethereal, pretty boys, princely, protective, or some or all of the above. They typically have some kind of brooding front but deep down they are the most gentle and kind souls. For some reason, they all have light hair (silver or white) but doesn't have to be necessarily. But most do. I also love a good fictional man with a tortured soul. Bonus points if they are some kind of demon or vampire. Or a humanoid mixed with some other other-worldly entity. Additional points if they hate everyone but the person they love. Bonus bonus points if he cooks well.

Exhibit A: My first anime crush, Yuki Sohma from Fruits Basket

I was gonna say he just has this princely vibe. But now that I think about it, he is lowkey kinda brooding. He just is not as prominent with it. And he has the Sohma curse, so he also does have a mystical aspect about him. And he's a pretty boy. It all makes sense lol.

Exhibit B: Zero Kiryuu from Vampire Knight

Zero's got somewhat of an ethereal vibe with his light features. He's also is the definition of having a super brooding front but deep down a very gentle and kind soul. I can especially because not only how he treats Yuki, but how he treats animals (like the horse White Lily for example). He's also a vampire. And a tortured soul. And hates everyone but Yuki. I get the vibe he's somewhat protective too, at least with Yuki, so I'm like like good lawd.

Exhibit C: Rin Okumura from Ao No Exorcist

I put him in here too because he's somewhat of an outlier. Not really but kinda? Maybe just because he has dark hair? Idk. Anyway, I liked him because of his humor and the fact he cooks well. He gives me somewhat ADHD vibes too. Teenage me was like damn. I would marry him. And his father is literally Satan himself??? Hell yeah. (No pun intended).

Exhibit D: Tomoe from Kamisama Kiss

Also has white/silver hair. Wow. What a coincidence. He's also. A demon. Wow. What a surprise. And he's brooding by all fronts. An element that makes him stand out is that he cooks and cleans well. And he has a somewhat like sensual vibe? And he has a past. A wild past at that bc, ya know, he's a demon.

He's also very protective of Nanami. So much so he's very possessive of her at times. Some moments in the show made me raise an eyebrow like...huh? But it all comes from a good place, so I don't mind it overall. He pretty much hates everyone but her. And don't even get me started on how he approached Nanami when they first meet when Nanami goes back in time. Like HUH. I beg your finest pardon? Why does it feel so hot in here all the sudden?

I would classify him as a tortured soul because he's pretty much betraying his nature as a demon (and Akura-Oh) for falling in love with a human. And he has a tendency to hide in great conflict and close himself in. So I'm pretty sure he's a soft boy at heart.

Exhibit E: Taemin

Do I need to explain? He's the only real person on here. And that's saying something. He's a pretty boy. He's giving ethereal. Giving sensuality. Sings and dances with so much soul and emotion like he's a tortured soul (and honestly I think he is). He's sensual. He's someone that makes me go, hm, I like him so much that I wanna be him. He's an inspiration for my fashion choices and my dance style. Because I dance here and there and I can say that I'm definitely not a terrible dancer. I've been watching his growth as a performer since 2011 and I just am in awe with Taemin. His music and performances makes my spirit come alive. Like I think yes! Someone gets it. But he could just be autistic and that's why I'm drawn to him more than others. (I'm autistic).

Exhibit F: Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3

I remember seeing edits of him on Tik Tok in September of 2023. I think that was when Baldur's Gate 3 was released. Astarion was the primary reason why I bought it. I also heard it was a good game in general too and it is up my alley when it comes to fantasy RPGs. So that was a factor. First off, light hair? Second, he's an elf vampire??? Not a thing I would expect coming out of my mouth. And I don't mind it a single bit. And he's ethereal and a devastatingly beautiful being.

He is THE definition of a tortured soul. My guy was a slave for 200 years and had to bed thousands to lure them to an older vampire in the guise of a well-respected noble. And was tortured and had no control and had to do everything this vampire said no question. And for one of those years, he was put into complete darkness. For not wanting to lure in a sweet man.

He puts up a front, idk if it's brooding per se. It's more flirtatious and cheeky and diva-esque. Full of sarcasm too. I think the real him is full of anger/resentment. He is power hungry, but it makes sense because he was controlled. But I'm choosing not to ascend him and have him continue the cycle.
