Clouds
Only those who fly fully appreciate the wonders that exist out the front of  the cockpit. Our passion is fueled by the experiences of seeing and feeling many things, including the extraordinary cloud types that comprise our living atmosphere.
My memories of clouds include the theory in the class rooms, tempered and case hardened by experiences in the cockpit:
The experiences of crossing, or jumping on the back of Jet Streams (narrow bodies of air that form due to temperature shears that can travel up to 300 kilometers per hour);
The threatening view of roll clouds in front of thunderstorms that took on the colour of their contents (green ocean water) ;
The seemingly innocent and beautiful views of “virga”, rainfall that evaporates before descending to the ground, but acts as the cooling process to create dangerous micro-bursts that are deadly to aircraft near airports;
The fascinating events during lightning strikes to aircraft;
Morning Katabatic winds that roll down mountain slopes in Perth, Adelaide, Jordan and Los Angeles; and
“Rotors” of turbulent air that form in the lee of the escarpment just a few miles to the east of Perth Airport in Western Australia. Every Perth inhabitant who has flown has probably experienced this rough ride just prior to landing or after takeoff.
Through the Inter Tropic Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a corridor ringing the Earth that marks the most heated surface temperatures,  that trails the sun’s highest position in latitude by one month. The warmer surface heats the air more than the surrounding cooler surfaces.
Convective forces lift moist air mass in the ITCZ to form the highest and most spectacular thunderstorms on the planet.
The water vapour causes the wet rising air to cool slower than the surrounding drier ambient air. This growing temperature difference causes the rising column to become even more buoyant in the atmosphere. The buoyant thunderstorm clouds can often ascend at more than 5,000 feet per minute.
The thunderstorm tops rise until the atmosphere becomes stable. The highest stable altitude is found at a point called the Tropopause, where the air temperature remains constant as the altitude increases. The tropopause can be located anywhere from 25,000 (poles) up to 60,000 (equator) feet above the surface. Many ITCZ thunderstorms reach these amazing heights and then then “top out” at  after punching though the tropopause. This is the reasons that the coldest atmospheric temperatures exist over the equator!
Every pilot who flies through the ITCZ knows about these dangers and avoids thunderstorms accordingly. We are always on alert, aware that a “safe” radar picture one minute can change into a “dangerous” paint the next. We never fully trust the radar presentations.
The pilots creed of “one look outside is worth 100 radar scans” holds true and at night. Whilst the passengers are snug in their seats watching the latest video, we have turned down the cockpit lighting to the minimum and pressed our faces against the windows, using the “Mark 1 Eyeball” to scan the outside horizon for dangerous storm cells.
This is just another day in the life of an airline pilot.
Our 400 passengers were either asleep in the A380’s remarkably quiet cabin, or watching one of the thousand in-flight movies. Whilst they relaxed with their window shutters closed, we dodged one ITCZ thunderstorm after another, banking and weaving, banking and weaving through the sky, all the time ensuring that the aircraft rolled at a rate less than three degrees per second – a rate that is undetectable to our passengers. We were busy in the flight deck whilst the passengers presumed that their pilots were carving a straight line through clear skies.
Not a drop was spilled from any glass.
The energy in this thunderstorm, if tapped, would have powered a city for a day.

Angus Wilson Lennie was born on April 18th 1930 in Glasgow.
Many of you of a certain age might remember Angus as Shughie McFee, the chef in Crossroads but others, myself included he will always be remembered as Archibald Ives, 'The Mole' in one of the best ever films, in my opinion, The Great Escape.
Lennie was born and brought up in Shettleston, in Glasgow's East End, where he attended Eastbank Academy he began in show business as a dancer and stand up comedian. He was a song and dance man by the age of 14, performing at the Glasgow Metropole and was then on the variety circuit prior to making the transition into stage acting at Perth Theatre in the late 1940's In 1957, he made his television debut in the Armchair Theatre play The Mortimer Touch.
Two years later, he was cast as the cabin boy Sunny Jim in the BBC Scotland comedy series Para Handy- Master Mariner the first of the Para Handy tales in 1959. Other TV roles through the years included, The Saint Dr Who, Z Cars, Rumpole of the Bailey, Lovejoy, The Onedin Line, All Night Long, Keeping Up Appearances and Monarch of the Glen.
On stage, he appeared in six pantomimes over 10 years with the comedian Stanley Baxter at the King's Theatres in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and toured the Far East with Derek Nimmo's company.
On the big screen as well as The Great Escape he was also in Oh What a Lovely War, 633 Squadron and The V.I.P.s alongside Richard Burton.
Lennie died on 14 September 2014 in Acton, West London, aged 84.

Dead Friend Forever episode 10 blurb
I see a lot of y'all turning on Phee and to quote the late, great Bernie Mac, "I’m not condoning this type of behavior but I understand" ...but even if I do end up looking goofy, I'm gonna stand by my dude...
There's likely gonna be a fallout between PheeJin and Tan/New and I'm seeing it end fatally for someone.... maybe the cowardly Jin is brave and jumps in front of Phee when Tan tries to off him too... or maybe the guilty Phee tries to give his life to spare Jin from Tan's wrath... or the grieving brother is slain falling short of his quest for vengeance. Either way I am seeing the plot reaper coming for one or more of these three
This wasn't my favorite ep or the strongest but I think the ground for the final twists and turns were set up here.
Because we definitely have Chekhov's Axe waiting for the somehow not dead Non to retrieve so maybe instead of the gun, it's the axe
Also, White is definitely more than the innocent wee babe...
Just throwing it out there - my guess is Perth and Non kill the mafia uncle and then head to the woods when Perth hears about Tee going back to the cabin. Maybe Perth is being groomed by the uncle and Non sees and relates to that and uses his experience with Keng to get Perth to turn on mafia uncle.

Episode 9 Thoughts
It took me a while to actually sit down long enough to write this but I just really want to jut my thoughts down before ep10 supplies us with new information.
Tan is New!
We’re now finally introduced to Non’s older brother, but we were also shown just how their bond as siblings was not that good before Non disappeared, but it’s not because he doesn’t love him or anything like that. New love his brother and we were shown that when he tried to mend their relationship before he left for England and how sincere his promise to Non was that he’ll bring him the best snacks when he comes back. (This hits close to home because food has always been a love language for me)
My heart just broke for New this episode. He lost so much in such a short period of time. He lost his brother, he lost his scholarship (as he did not return to England), he lost hia parents, he lost his Dad’s trust in him in his last moments and he lost himself to be Tan.
The part where he was hallucinating Non and asking for forgiveness was just heart breaking. The way he said it, was just full of pain.
Tumblr media
And the snacks! He really did brought snacks as he promised. Just how devastating it must’ve felt to go home and find out your baby brother want missing and the police weren’t helping at all, they were even trying to close the case and labeling your brother as a runaway.
Phee’s savior complex
I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but his character comes off as that one hero that would try and save everybody. When he said to Non that there’s no problem he can’t solve, I think that really showed how he is as a character. He’s upright, dependable and a believer of justice, a classic hero.
I won’t be surprised if he actually tries to save the rest of the people in the cabin once they get there. At this point I doubt he knew all of Tan’s plan. He probably just thought they’d drug them and then they’d spill the beans on what really happened to Non.
Phee caring for Jin is not really that far off. I could see that happening. Him and Tan/New didn’t know yet what each of the boys did, they know the group collectively were jerks and bullies but what they did individually to Non, they probably don’t know everything yet. I’m curious to know how Phee would deal with the news if it’s revealed that Jin really did spread the video.
Theory
I believe that Non is still alive. And I think that’s where Perth’s character will come to light. I think he has a big role to play in the show, he may even be the one helping Tan with the plan.
I think Tan already anticipated that Phee might have feelings for Jin, so he didn’t tell him all of the plan. Like he intentionally left stuff out, when he said the drugs will not kill them, it really felt like he knew they’d get crazy enough to kill each other but they will not OD.
Tumblr media
The smirk at the end feels a lot like Tan/New basking in the chaos. I don’t blame him. After all, the most dangerous person is the one with nothing to lose.
Tumblr media
Overall, it’s really now gearing up for the climax. Almost every backstory has been told, except for White’s and what happened to Keng and Non that faithful day. It’s probably going to be messy.

share some of your au ideas if you want!! it’d be fun!! i’m sure a ton of ppl are interested like me ❤️❤️
Thank you, anon!! Here's a little sad, sad, ficlet, just for you. <3
They only stay at the cabin for four days. It's all the time they can spare, before Daniel goes home to Perth and Max goes home to his perfectly constructed family and they pretend not to care overmuch about each other for months.
"We don't have to do this, you know," Max says on the last morning. He always says it, just like this, when they're in bed together and he's sex-dumb and sated. He pulls Daniel's arm tighter around him and interlaces their fingers, half-turning his head even though he won't be able to see Daniel's expression without turning all the way over.
"Yeah, we do," Daniel says, speaking his line like he's supposed to. He kisses the skin behind Max's ear and nuzzles in there, pretending for a moment that this is enough. "You know we do, Maxy."
Red Bull is...well, it's Red Bull. And Formula One is Formula One. Even if things are changing, even if you can get away with wearing a rainbow helmet now or speaking up for others' rights, you still have to give up a good amount of your own. Max can't be a World Champion and also be gay and in love with his rival--or, now, his reserve driver. Daniel can't be....whatever he is, and also be this, the one who spoons up behind Max in bed, the one who makes him cry with his dick, the one who adores him so much it's terrifying.
"We can tell them to fuck off," Max says. "What are they going to do? Fire me?"
They could, Daniel thinks. Max doesn't believe it, because even though he pretends otherwise, all this does go to his head. He knows he's the best, and he thinks that makes him irreplaceable. But the truth is, none of them are. Not really. Cash is king, and the moment any of them is the threat to the cash, they'll be out on their ass.
"Not worth the risk." Daniel kisses the shell of his ear, then props himself up so he can lean over, meet Max's eyes. "We've been through this. I can't be the reason anything happens to your career. You think I could live with myself?"
Max scowls, always so annoyed in the face of cold logic that proves him wrong. He shrugs off Daniel's arm, then seems to think better of it and grabs his hand again. "What if I don't care? What if I'd rather be with you than drive?"
It takes everything Daniel has in him not to laugh. They both know it's not true. Neither of them would give up the drive. Daniel spends most of his energy trying not to think about what that means, whether that's a bad sign. All he knows is that these four days have been the only time he's felt whole all year, and he only really feels alive when Max is near him--but he still wouldn't give it all up. And more than that, he can't let Max give it all up for him.
"It's temporary," Daniel says. This, too, is his usual line. "And we still have this."
Max flops back to the bed, defeated for now. He's beautiful, there in the cage of Daniel's arms. He turns his head and kisses Daniel's bicep, then rests his head there, closes his eyes. "I don't want to leave tomorrow," he says, his voice rough.
"Don't think about it now," Daniel says in a rush, just before his throat closes up. He kisses Max, squeezing his eyes shut, making himself pretend.

Perth
“When are you going to Perth?” Max asks flatly as she pushes through the entryway into Daniel’s flat, before he can piece together the flurry of thoughts in his brain into a coherent question, like ‘what the hell are you doing here?’ or ‘are you okay?’
Daniel knows she isn’t okay. That she can’t be. “You cut your hair,” he says instead, dumbly. It isn’t in the trademark braid she’s had since Daniel had first met her, before she’d even been signed to Toro Rosso. It’s shaved near the back of her neck, her fringe floppy and blonder than he remembers. It makes her look like a boy.
2. Welcome To My Island
“Everyone removes one article of clothing,” Luisa recites, and before she can finish reading the rest of the card, Daniel and Pierre are already on their feet, roaring and cheering like they’ve just won a championship while everyone else looks on, laughing.
Daniel pulls Pierre into a tight embrace, holding the other man’s face between his hands and planting his lips squarely on Pierre’s mouth. Pierre responds in kind, reaching up to keep Daniel’s face glued to his own as they both try to outdo each other with a garish display of French kissing, much to the delight of the girls watching.
“Okay, okay,” Lewis finally shouts over all the hullabaloo. “Let’s save it for the game, yeah?”
“Yeah, Pierre,” Daniel gasps out as he tears himself away with a light shove against Pierre’s chest. “Have a little dignity, will you?”
3. Summer Sun & Wildfire
There’s a woman named Susan who works at the gas station in Sula. Her husband comes in sometimes—his sunbaked wrinkles and grizzled beard belying the fact that he couldn’t have been more than twice Max’s age. His name is Gary. Max likes Gary, and Max doesn’t like anyone. But Gary’s grandparents had immigrated to the US from Holland (this is the way Gary tells it) when his mother was small, and consequently, he’d picked up on Max’s accent the very first time she’d come into the station after nearly running out of gas on her way north to Missoula (she never made it that far).
Now Gary speaks to Max in broken Dutch on the occasions that he comes in to restock at the same time that she comes in to resupply. Today, however, Max is procrastinating going inside the little roadside station with its kitschy log cabin façade. She doesn’t want to see Gary, to have him smile at her with tobacco-stained teeth and listen to him call her moppie in his trembling baritone voice.
Tagging @thetightwhiteshirt @hungriestheidi @rainbowslinkyy @titleleaf and anyone else who would like to post some of their WIPs and share with me. :)

A PerthChimon AU - MY SECRET CRUSH ♥️
FMV link: Let's Collide! 🔥
Tumblr media
Perth was struggling with his monthly report which has to be completed today itself. He's a perfect employee in all aspects but he was find it hard to get back to the form after he took off for a week to take care of his sick mother. He was not able to keep up with the fast paced environment as he was missing the context of lot of things happened during his absence.
Clock striked at 11, He finished almost the entire report by himself because he knows how to gather data needed for him without any help but still a small part was left unfinished due to lack of information. Since everyone left at 6:00 pm itself, the office was empty and filled with darkness. A golden light illuminated his cabinet. He laid down on his desk being exhausted because it's not an easy task to get back to work, when you don't even know the context.
He suddenly felt a warm hand on his shoulder, when he turned around to check, he was hit by a dangerously pleasant fragrance which clouded his mind making him forget about all of the stress he had due to work. It took him a moment to regain his composure. There was an angelic face right in front of him. It was Chimon, his colleague. 'Perth, why are you still here?', he asked with a softest smile on his face.
He tried to answer his question but nothing came out of his mouth except air. His hands went chill, he felt his heart racing and his cheeks burning. All these reactions happening inside him justifies the crush he has on Chimon. 'Hmm?' chimon hummed when he didn't get answer for his question, which made Perth come back to his senses. He managed to tell him about his pending work while things happening within him are still not subsided.
Chimon pulled a office chair from the cabin next to Perth's and sat beside him. 'Okay, let me know what are all the data you need in for completing this report', chimon casually asked while Perth's mind couldn't comprehend what's happening. Perth snapped and mouthed, 'Thanks for offering help, but this might take an hour to complete. I don't want to bother you!' he said not wanting to trouble Chimon for his personal issue. But deep inside he feels that he would really love to spend time alone with his secret crush of long time.
But chimon defended, 'If we work together we can complete this real quick, also I have completed mine yesterday, so I have an idea of what goes where. So without any further delay can we get started?' Perth was touched by the kind offering from Chimon, because he really needed that. He gave him a soft smile along with a nod. It's been 20 mins since they started working. Chimon guided perth with the data he needed.
When their fingers brushed accidentally while trying to reach for the mouse, their eyes locked for a good moment. Perth's eyes gave up on hiding the crush he has on Chimon. The entire world was blurred for him except a beautiful face which is just few inches away from him. As for Chimon, he felt a brand new sensation in his body while looking deep into Perth's eyes. Those sparkly eyes conveyed something beautiful to him. The air around them shifted but they were interrupted by Chimon's phone call.
While both of them were brought to senses by a sudden call, they were at loss of words. They somehow managed to complete the entire report within the next 10 mins. When they turned off their computer and got ready to leave. Perth uttered, 'Chimon, I really want to thank you for helping me, I might have gotten into a huge trouble if you are not here with me today! Please allow me to treat you a meal!'. Chimon replied, 'Okay, if you insist, let's go to the nearest restaurant. You want to come with me in my car?'
'Sure', said Perth ignoring the existence of his brand new car parked in the ground floor of the office.
The whole trip to the restaurant was filled with a romantic melody chimon played while their heads were full of what happened earlier. What if chimon didn't got the phone call at that time. Will they be one step ahead from where they are right now? These thoughts were racing within them as they reached the restaurant. Chimon asked perth to wait and got of the car. He reached Perth's side of door and held it open. Perth was taken aback by Chimon's actions. His treatment towards him felt special. He had lot of things going on his head, right at the moment.
When they were inside the restaurant, it came to Perth's knowledge that there's a premium table has been reserved for them prior. Chimon led Perth to their table. He pulled a chair out for Perth to sit. When they're settled in their respective seats. Perth started, 'how come we have a reserved table while came unplanned, chimon?'. 'Umm, I made an reservation while you were packing your stuff ', chimon answered. Perth couldn't stop his mind from taking all of these as a sign that he can open up to chimon about his inner feelings.
When the food arrived at the table, both of them started to enjoy their dinner. When Perth suggested chimon to try his favourite food by extending his spoon, Chimon leaned in and took Perth's spoon directly to his mouth, savouring the food. When Perth was still speechless by his actions, he offered his food to perth, not thinking much perth did the same. They were occasionally stealing glances and their eyes lingered in each other faces every now and then. There was a rush of sensations in their bodies due to the mere existence of the other one.
When they finished their dinner and came out of the restaurant, they found a beautiful park and decided to take a walk. A cold breeze swept as they were walking through the trees. Perth turned to chimon to talk just to find out he was already looking at him. 'You wanna say something?' chimon asked.. Perth felt he need to pour his heart out otherwise he'll burst into million pieces. Because it's been a year since he started having a secret crush on Chimon.
He was moved by how gentle chimon is with his words. It was not a sudden change, he fell gradually but deeper and deeper for him. In Perth's eyes Chimon is perfect in all aspects. Perth has spent hours admiring how hot chimon looks while handling crucial matters with ease. The way chimon dresses with his signature, High turtle neck topped with a monochrome blazer always leaves perth breathless. The tenderness in his actions is what made perth fall harder for him.
He was trying to convey all of the feelings in his heart but he felt like his words are stuck at his throat. Chimon smiled softly seeing Perth's condition, he took Perth's hand and started inching closer to him, slowly. He stopped moving closer when they were just millimeters apart. Perth held his soft gaze for a moment before closing the gap between them. All it took was a soft and gentle kiss to convey eachother's inner feelings for them. The kiss was tender, warm and delicate.
After few moments of breaking their intoxicating kiss, chimon began to talk. 'Sometimes we need actions to deliver our feelings while words don't come to help.' while being in eachother's warm embrace. Chimon pulled them out from the hug and continued, 'Without me knowing I had grown feelings for you, the more I know about you, the more I fell. I have secretly admired you. Sorry for taking too long to convey my feelings for you!.' he said with a softest smile on his face.
Perth felt like his fantasies were coming to life, never in his wildest dreams he thought that Chimon would have felt the same way as he has feelings for him. 'The gentleness in your attitude is what made me fall harder for you. Thank you for making me feel special!' completing his words he pulled chimon into a warm hug. Chimon felt wetness on his shoulders from Perth's tears. They stayed in eachother's embrace for a long time.
When Chimon's car stopped at Perth's place, perth turned to him for saying goodbye, but they both couldn't have enough of eachother. Their gazes conveyed that they no longer want to go on the separate paths. 'Wanna stay over at my place?', perth asked. 'Why not, I am not ready to stay away from my boyfriend, not even for a moment!' chimon replied. Perth chuckled and leaned in for a quick peck leaving chimon flustered. They both giggled at eachother.
When Chimon entered Perth's home, he can see a wall dedicated for his images. Perth gave him sliders and dragged him inside. He offered a decent set of his tshirt and sweat pants to him and sat in his bed. 'Okay, I'll wash up first', chimon turned towards the bathroom just to be pulled by Perth making him sit besides him. 'What's the hurry, it's already 3 in the morning and we are tired. So we won't be able to go to office tomorrow anyways. How about getting to know eachother better?', perth asked with a sly smile.
Chimon placed the clothes beside him and fully turns towards perth, 'That means.. we are not getting any sleep, am I right?' chimon asked while taking a subtle grip on Perth's tie, bringing him closer. Perth was totally enjoying Chimon's actions, he let chimon take the lead. He was getting closer as chimon was pulling his tie towards him. The moment when their lips touched, both felt an electrifying sensation running through them.
Perth conveyed all of his unsaid feelings through this kiss. The kiss was passionate and filled with love and care. They both treated eachother like they were made out of glass. Perth pulled chimon on top of him, pulling him by his tie. He closed the distance between their bodies with the help of his knees. They were lost in the Gentle and intoxicating love they have for eachother!

You might like Where the Leaves Fall Purple if...
-You're a fan of audio fiction/audio dramas and you like ensemble casts. Our show has thirty actors overall, but don't worry, we'll introduce them slowly so it doesn't get confusing. Some of them only show up once or twice but are all important to the story. We wanted to give you a whole world like you're watching a tv show. You'll mostly follow Ben Miller, Ezra Hansen, Veronica Barrow, and Wyatt Perth to try and solve what happened to Janie Melnyk
-You either find true crime podcasts interesting or you can't stand them. A weird juxtaposition, we know. We'll explain. Our show is about Ben Miller an amateur true crime podcaster who can't get anyone to listen to his show. To try and increase listenership he asks his best friend Janie Melnyk if she will stage her own disappearance so he can find her. The plan works a little too well when she really does go missing. WTLFP follows tropes of true crime in Ben's search but also plays with how sometimes the people in front of the mic may take it too far and forget that they are still talking to real people. We bring you the consequences as well as the action.
-You like solving (or trying to solve) mysteries. If you think you're good at figuring out who did it before the big reveal, try your hand at this audio drama! Each episode Ben will follow a new lead until everyone is a suspect. The only clue he really has at the start is blood writing on a cabin wall that reads "Where the Leaves Fall Purple." What does it mean? And what does it have to do with the disappearance?
-You want a show with positive queer rep. 3/5 of our main characters are part of the LGBT+ community. Ezra: Ben's roommate, is a gay man dealing with the recent breakup with his ex-boyfriend Wyatt. Their breakup meant that he also lost his best friend. Wyatt deals with the stereotypes and scrutiny of being a bisexual man as he's started dating a girl named Skylar after Ezra. Veronica is a lesbian who is often everyone's voice of reason. She's Janie's other best friend who doesn't like Ben much at the start.
-You like shows that don't shy away from harder topics. WTLFP deals with topics of anxiety, biphobia, domestic violence/assault, death, and grief. We put warnings on episodes that may be triggering. We wanted the story to feel authentic (in a tasteful, responsible way), which means that sometimes we do have to have the hard conversations/moments. We try our best to handle them with tact and heart.
-You want to support indie artists/creators. WTLFP started as a group of people getting together in the show's creator's basement to tell a good story. And that's still what it is. Majority of the cast and crew are volunteers and others are only receiving a small honorarium because it's all we can afford to do coming out of a very difficult time for creatives. You listening directly supports everyone involved. We appreciate every stream/download.
Thank you for reading! We hope you'll give us a try!

Culeenup Island Field Station
Tumblr media
Now that I’ve covered all the New Zealand species @purrdence photographed at the end of 2022, I can start covering some of the Perth species again - to whit, the ones I saw out at the Yunderup Wildlife Observatory run by the WA Naturalists Club in June.
The Nats Club were established in 1924, and they built this cabin in 1985. Culeenup Island was chosen because the Murray-Serpentine delta is unique for the SW of Western Australia - we have no large rivers down here and this one opens into the Peel Inlet, rather than onto the coastline where surf would soon destroy it. Don’t ask me why this Murray shares a name with the much larger and more famous Murray that drains much of the Eastern states.
Unfortunately, in the decades since the cabin was built, the envionment around the delta has changed drastically - not only have multiple holiday homes been built on the island, introducing exotic species, but the entire chemistry of the area has changed. The Peel Inlet was having serious algal problems thanks to suburban and agricultural runoff in the 70s and 80s, so in the 1990s a channel was cut through the coast at Dawesville. This may have reduced the algal blooms, but it turned the hydrology of the delta from fresh to seasonally brackish, to marine tidal, and only occasionally brackish. This has killed most of the plants on the island that can’t survive extended periods of salinity. The islands are also suffering severe erosion - partly from plant loss, but also boat traffic, and, I suspect, the introduction of some crab species not previously native to the area.

Top Ten Bon Iver Songs (cause I've been thinking about it for too long, also first post!)
10. 33 "GOD"
I may not be the biggest fan of Vernon's later work just because I'm not engaged with the autotune, but something about this one always just hit hard.
"How to know who to write / How to know how to cull up all these questions"
9. Perth
Bon Iver's sophomore, self-titled album is an improvement on the very first (FEFA) album in almost every way. That's apparent from the very first track, "Perth." Keeping in the signature falsetto, but adding badass new drum beats really makes this song one worth listening to.
8. Skinny Love
The most popular one (and a song that's spawned a million covers) is still really great. Love how Vernon sounds like he's desperately putting together the pieces of a once whole relationship:
"Come on skinny love what happened here?"
Won't say I haven't been in that position before ;)
7. Michicant
A beautiful and soft lullaby that puts me to tears as well as it can put me to sleep (really a compliment). It's such a beautiful and memorable tune where Vernon's falsetto really shines.
6. 29 Strafford Apts
As I've said before, I'm not the biggest fan of Vernon's later work. After working with Kanye, he loses a lot of that acoustic sound that hooked me in the first place.
However, "Apts." takes full advantage of a more experimental and grand production. It's a memorable wave of sound that manages to overwhelm with its vulnerability:
"I know you buried all your alimony butterflies."
I may not appreciate the "unique" beauty of 22, A Million quite yet, but I feel I will soon.
5. Holocene
Ahh yes a classic favorite. The acoustic plucks at the beginning and the message of taking in the grandeur of life when feeling insignificant is one that's gotten me through uncountable tribulations.
As I'm sure it is to many people, "Holocene" is a personal song to me. A delicate light in dark times. One that seems like it needs to be gently held or else it'll be smothered by the all-consuming darkness.
4. Towers
Bon Iver's one true rock song; Towers is a rather uplifting and joyous entry in Vernon's canon.
Again another personal song, but Towers is more triumphant and energetic. It's just a fun thing to listen to when I'm down.
3. Re Stacks
Used emotionally at the end of HouseMd's famous episode "Wilson's Heart" (where the doctor sidekick's misunderstood girlfriend dies one of television's most gut-wrenching deaths), Re Stacks seems to be the anthem of delicate and somber loss.
Once again another very personal song (probably a distinction I'll be making for every song from here on out to be honest), but Re Stacks is particularly special. It's elusive lyrics yet emotionally resonate sound makes it a favorite to cover. And it's one that brings me to tears every time for some reason.
2. Flume
"I am my mother's only child"
A simple, homophonic ballad that introduced us to the natural cottegecore world of Bon Iver, Vernon's "Flume" sings his heart out.
It's very simple, but yet still very powerful. Partially due to its lyrics and partially due to just how effective it is in delivering its simplicity.
1. For Emma
Emma isn't a person, it's a place.
Iconic for its triumphant trumpet accompaniment and somber lyrics, it's a juxtaposition that's become the classic anthem for loss and forlorn nostalgia. It perfectly hammers home Vernon's "cabin in the woods" feel that is established throughout the whole album and on the cover itself.
Again, but this is probably my single most personal song in Vernon's entire discography. I've listened to this countless times. When I'm happy. When I'm sad. When I'm tired. When I'm horny. When I'm thinking about the future. And more often than not, when I'm thinking about the past.
Emma is not a person. It's a time. It's a place that harbors all of my pain, pleasures and all the tricky emotions in between.
Do I know how to navigate them? No. But it sure seems easier with a song that can bring them all to light as effectively and emotionally as "For Emma" does
