i am seriously considering taking up this program in mental health counseling - thing is, it is mpcac accredited, not cacrep. they have the procedures for getting licensed as a LCMHC in the state, but i'm worried - am i making the right decision?

What is a clinical mental health counselor?

A Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) is a person that went through an accredited Masters program with the curriculum that follows CACREP. LMHC’s focus is on wellness and prevention, implementing a holistic approach to counseling and effectively teaching life skills the client may have never been taught. The counselor will initially assess the emotional instability that the client is presenting and affecting their relationships, intruding on their daily life tasks. Once assessed, the counselor would diagnose the client and create a treatment plan that maps out the counselor’s and client’s goals. 

In the mid 1700s, the first asylum was opened to act as a peaceful place for the mentally ill to live. However, these “sanctuaries” eventually turned into overcrowded, abusive and unsanitary institutions. Eventually, Psychiatrists intervened and became advocates for the mentally ill. 

In the 1800s, Philosophers began theorizing the concept of the mind and the effects of the world around them. Out of Philosophy came Psychology which is also seen in Greek Mythology and Theology. Eventually, in the late 1800s Sigmund Freud coined the term conscious and unconscious mind assisting Psychiatrists in understanding the thinking processes of the mentally ill and an idea to treat the illness. 

Licensed Mental Health Counselors were not always well-regarded in the Psychology world. It was not until John F Kennedy signed the Community Mental Health Act in 1963 that opened the door for Mental Health Counselors. This Act recognized the need for counselors and prevention in our communities. After the Vietnam war, soldiers were coming home in bad shape, most showing symptoms of “shell-shock,” now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Community Mental Health Act helped establish community wide centers to help individuals and their families dealing with disorders such as, mental illness, for example PTSD, intellectual disabilities, such as Autism, and addiction disorders, such as substance abuse, eating disorders, gambling, etc.  It established a clear need for treatment in multiple stages, like prevention for healthy people before an issue begins, programs like DARE and suicide prevention, as well as establishing a crises hotline. Prevention during,  such as inpatient care and treatment centers and finally, prevention after treatment, continuing to learn life skills and group/individual counseling in the outpatient setting. 

In 2011, after many years of lobbying for our profession, the Department of Defense finally recognized the demand for Mental Health Counseling, finally becoming eligible to be credentialed with TriCare, the military insurance for soldiers, retired military, as well as their families.  Eventually, in 1997, Mental Health Counseling was recognized by the ACA, but not eligible for licensure until 2009. 

Licensed Mental Health Counselors have come a long way, proving to be an asset to the community. Unlike other allied professions, Mental Health Counselors focus their attention on prevention and wellness. They assist in helping to eliminate the hardship that the client or their family may be experiencing. They teach important skills such as, stress management, time management and other important life skills to alleviate the feelings of anxiety, pressure and worries. They assist in the teaching steps to take care of oneself. Often, patients that are in inpatient treatment might need to be taught necessary life skills in order to get by once they are out of treatment. Such simple tasks as waking up at a normal time, brushing their teeth, showering, even washing their dishes after they eat and not leaving them in the community sink, are just some of the elementary skills that the client can use in the “real world.” Often, mental health counseling may be short term, as once the client is functioning in daily life without emotional stress, they may not feel that therapy is still beneficial. Counselors do recommend maintenance, such as a session every month or quarterly, just to check in. 

In conclusion, as one can clearly see, it was an exceptionally long road for the Mental Health Counseling Profession but we made it! We have proven to be a respectful and needed profession in the community and I can not wait to continue my journey towards licensure in Mental Health Counseling.

Hello World

Graduation is 2 weeks away. On May 12th, I will receive a masters degree from a CACREP accredited program, launched into society as a new therapist in a new job as a Resident in Counseling - bright-eyed, bushy-tailed... and slightly overwhelmed. This blog will serve as a personal reflection on my growth as a new therapist pursing licensure, career development, and existential purpose (not necessarily in that order). 

Why on a public forum? For me, it allows seasoned therapists to review my personal and professional development, as well as provide wisdom and insight onto the universal themes, in addition to the unique individual challenges during the journey of becoming a mental health professional. Perhaps, it may also serve as a reminder to experienced therapist who may have lost sight in their own passion for the field, and reignite the fiery fulfillment of the helping profession. 

For my fellow young therapists, it is my hope that this blog may provide a sense of camaraderie and comfort in our shared experiences. May it be a place where we can challenge our perspectives, engage our thoughts, and open our minds to connect with one another in this time of great change and personal growth. As the future of the mental health industry, it is imperative that we hold ourselves to the highest empirical and ethical standards of service - while also constantly ensuring self-care for ourselves and for our fellow professionals.

100 Days of Productivity . Day 91

🧡 Had my research team meeting. I’ve been assigned my first support-line client! I’m so excited!

It’s hard to believe that all this is finally happening. I joined this research team December 2019.

🧡 I talked to two grad programs

I’m really grateful for the grad school/career advice I’ve been given so far. Totally Online University sounded really good until I noticed something was off. Turns out they’re not CACREP accredited, so.. that would be a masters degree in underwater basket weaving.

Spendy University has an online option, but no synchronistic virtual classes, which is not great. At least the Christian University had virtual classes.  most of these degrees require me to travel far away for a weekend or a week, which would be really complicated to make happen. i’m glad even though the online advisor’s description of their campus option didn’t sound like it would work for me I called anyway. Turns out Spendy University campus does have a hybrid, low residency option I could do.. Hazah! For a mere $80,000 😰 even after grant assistance that would still put me roughly $50,000 in debt… so.. there’s that..

💜 I put my feelers out in a couple mom groups to Connect with other vaccinated, Covid mindful families so my kid can make some friends

kiddo hit it off with one of the kidlets on FaceTime, and a play date is already scheduled for next weekend with a girl from her GS troop.

They had some good ideas on volunteer opportunities I could look into

🧡 put in my application for a local nonprofit that helps the homeless

🧡 signed up for their volunteer introductions meeting

🧡  all signed up and connected with a nonprofit that helps families going through hard times.

That childhood trauma training comes with certification, which is good even if it doesn’t lead to actual volunteer experience.

Hopefully that wide net catches a few fish. if nothing else, I can at least say I kept trying until the bitter end!

I’ve reached out to the moms groups a few times over the last year trying to find a part of sorts to no avail. That people got back to me yesterday was a pleasant surprise. Listening to kiddo chatter ecstatically to her new potential friend made my heart happy for her.

The expense of Spendy U lead to an important conversation with RB that has been in the works for a while, but became RealTalk last night. I need to start making life altering decisions for myself, which includes him, his life, our relationship progression, so I wanted to get his input on The logistics of all this, and his consent to what all this could mean for us, him personally because it will effect him. I’ve put so much pressure on myself to get into grad school as soon as possible so I can be done with academia, off assistance, developing my career, finally self-sufficient, finally a provider, finally a contributor, but What good is rushing into things if it puts me ultimately in $40,000 of debt when I could’ve spent the next year volunteering at various agencies, acquiring experience, studying for my GRE, and potentially being accepted into a more affordable grad program? Waiting a year could save me $40,000… maybe by some miracle I could even get into my local university, which has an amazing counseling program. Even if next year I still end up going to Spendy University, having that volunteer experience on my resume will be beneficial when it comes time for me to apply to Community medical organizations for my supervised hours, so it wouldn’t be a wasted year.

Seems obvious that I should choose patience, but this isn’t just about me.  If we moved in together, buy a house together, it means that RB would be carrying the majority of the expenses for the next 2-5 years depending on how I broach grad school. Alternatively, I could stay at my apartment and we could just keep doing what we’re doing until I can be more monetarily helpful. It’s not a great set up, but it works. Maybe the solution is but he moves closer in the meantime to lessen commute obstacles? 

So all this is all kind of a big deal. heh. I thought a lot about it and been nervous to discuss it fully because no matter what it’s asking a lot of him that was not in the memo when we first started dating mostly because I don’t think either one of us was thinking this far ahead at the time.

And… he was great about it all.. Totally understanding and supportive regardless of what I decide, thinks the logistics of everything are doable, still wants to get a place together, no barbs at all. We even revisited the possibility of buying my friend’s farm and what that process would look like.

I can’t begin to describe what it feels like to finally trust someone has my back for the first time in my life. I’ve had a few dear friends over the years I call family, but at a certain point as people follow their dreams our paths diverge and I’ve never been willing to be a sidekick. so.. it’s always been a pretty lonesome journey. Family is dysfunctional and 3000 miles away not by accident. Allies come and go. I chose terrible boyfriends, so.. that was counterintuitive. RB is literally the only person who I’ve been able to share the ins and outs of my walk. He’s the only one who sees my good days and rough patches, all the little wins, the hurtles, the chronic stress, tears, moments of reprieve, strategizing,..  he’s the only person I really want to celebrate with when I finally cross that finish line because he knows what it took.

DAY ONE: Combating Mental Health

Kristin Beck Personal Statement for Admissions to study for a Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling.

As an alumnus of Alfred University, I have long appreciated the campus for its friendliness and the closeness that only comes with a smaller collegiate atmosphere. Furthermore, as a guest lecturer on several occasions, I see firsthand the professionalism of the staff and the quality of the education. Lastly, I realize that although I had a full career as US Navy SEAL, I am ready to move into a second career as a mental health counselor and there is no better institution to prepare me for this start than Alfred University.

In 1990 I joined the Navy to become a SEAL. I graduated #1 out of a SEAL training class that washed out 80% of candidates. SEAL training is so arduous that it is not uncommon to have a death just trying to pass the selection course. I went on to finish 20 years of service without ever applying for a job.

The SEALs taught me that I would excel, if I worked harder than any other person alive. That mantra guided me through my 20-year career, and I was always at the top and was requested to each job assignment while in the SEALs. I was awarded over 30 medals including the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart.

With all this combat and trauma, I have had my share of challenges. One of the biggest challenges in my life came after leaving the Navy. The transition from the military to the civilian world was hard and contributes to the 22 veterans who take their own lives every day. It is a scourge that has become as deadly as the combat many of us saw in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is the next challenge I wish to tackle with the same gusto I did in the SEALs, and there is no better place to be trained then at Alfred University.

I have gone to the Veteran’s Administration (VA) for mental health counseling and found every encounter lacking. I know what it means to leave the VA feeling worse and finally, out of frustration and anger, to totally discontinue contact with the VA for any psychological or counseling help. No person seeking help should ever be made to feel this way, and it is something I am committed to changing.  

The VA has received much criticism and rightfully so as the services cannot keep up with demand and they often miss the mark anyway. The mental health care crisis amongst veterans remains. This is where I want to work, and this is the battle I wish to commit myself too.

Mental healthcare amongst veterans is a unique challenge. I believe that the epidemic of suicide in the veteran community can only be fixed by veterans trained in counseling, coaching or other healing arts. Just like being in the SEALs, veterans must trust their counselors – and that is too often the failure point. For many veterans, the hardest part is asking for help, I want to make sure the person who answers “the call” can truly help them.

I understand that the desire to help is not enough and that to be effective I must be trained and educated in this field. I am ready to start at step one to learn and take in as much as I can, so that I can truly be qualified to help. I appreciate and am excited by the fact that Alfred University offers a hands-on and holistic approach, while making sure graduates are fully qualified for a career in counseling by being CACREP accredited.

Becoming a certified mental health counselor would give me the credentials for a career in mental health, however, it is my experience as a combat veteran that gives me the ability to help in a special way that most current counselors cannot. I speak the language of veterans, and I understand how they think, because I am one of them. But being a veteran is not enough to help, one needs training and an education in this field -- and that is why I am applying to Alfred University.

Emotional and Mental Health Counseling for Military Families

You should also be able to find information about their licensing requirements. Additionally, you should take into account whether the program is online or at an on-campus institution.

In addition to being well-educated, you'll need to have a passion for helping people. This is especially true if you plan to work with the veteran population. Aside from the required coursework, you will also need to complete a number of internships. Internships are an excellent way to build your professional network, learn more about the industry, and enhance your studies. Most programs will recommend an internship as part of your undergraduate coursework.

Although military counselors can work for a variety of different organizations, most of them work in private practices. They may work from home or in a quiet office. Many of them will work on an individual basis with their clients. They may also offer group therapy sessions, couples counseling, or other forms of therapy.

Before you choose a master's program, be sure to find out if the university is CACREP-accredited. Not all universities are eligible to be accredited by this prestigious organization. However, it is not uncommon for them to offer an accredited degree that has a special focus on the military.

To make it as a professional in the mental health field, you'll need to complete a bachelor's degree and a master's degree. The master's is the minimum requirement for licensed counselors in your state. But if you're interested in becoming a counselor for the active duty military, you will need to go the extra mile by obtaining a master's in social work or psychology.
