The Names of Shooting Stars

Stardust – Glitter? Shimmer? Incandescence? Iridescence? Whatever – is just as bad as soot, he decides. It lingers on him – his skin, his clothes, his hair. It’s not obvious, but if the light – any light – hits him just right there’s a brief shine. It’s easily explainable, a new ore from other realms, but he wipes it away with the same diligence as he does soot.
But they have the ore to experiment with. Something new he can try runeforging with. Will it be easier with this new ore? Harder? Impossible? Or will it be suitable for making just blades and armour? What properties will it have?
There’s no need to smelt it, but it does require shaping. Each strike of his hammer reveals something new: the crosshatch and triangular pattern of the raw metal; the smell of earth of a far-flung place; tiny sparks of Light, too small to do anything; dust of twisting Shadow that evaporates as soon as light touches it; and fine remnants of the night sky, too weak to be seen in daylight.
He’s pretty sure the metal will take whatever magic he chooses. It practically hums on its own, as if resonating with the world around it. He decides on something simple. Easy. A tiny bit of mana should do it. There’s a high pitched ringing sound moments before his body is sent flying halfway across the forges. He lays there, dazed, until he sees Alikestis swim into view.
“What did you do?” she demands. Her stern tone is at odds with how she checks him for injuries, her brow creased in worry.
“Nothing,” he mumbles. “The ore…” Dáire sits up with the blacksmith’s help. “I imbued mana into the metal.”
“The star-touched metal?” She looks back at his work station, blue and silver coloured residue from the metal and mana interacting coating most of its surroundings. The immediate area is damaged, but repairable. New tools will be needed, but she’s not sure about the anvil or crucible
Dáire stares at his work area for a long moment as he goes over everything again. It’s a moment more as he processes what happened. He needs to tell Aurana. “How do I get in contact with the Blessed Isles?”
~*~
Dáire takes one look at the Arcadian forge and knows exactly what happened. He searches the immediate area for Aurana, worry tugging at him, but can’t find her. Her notes are found on a table, the latest entry in the tiny notebook written in a shaky hand. None of which he can read.
He asks around, explaining who he is and why he’s here. A couple realize that he’s the one that’s been working with Aurana and translate it for him: Extremely sensitive to quintessence. Off to the side in tiny scrawl is Check House of Dust. He’s pretty sure that’s where Aurana is. He follows his hunch and sets out for the land of Kur.
Hearing about the House of Dust is one thing. Seeing it is another matter entirely. It’s a dreary cavern located deep in Kur. The souls here go about their mundane lives, but every scrap of food and drink is made of dry dust, their homes of dried clay slowly crumbling. The only time they don’t eat and drink dust is when someone from the land of the living offers them libations.
It’s here amongst them that Dáire finds Aurana. She stands out like a beacon in the darkness in her ivory chiton and blue peplos. She peers at each one in turn, as if searching for someone. She pulls back from one, suddenly wary. “Can you hear me?” she whispers.
“I thought they couldn’t.” His voice is quiet, and he takes a step back when she rounds on him. Dáire holds his hands open to show he’s not a threat, mindful of the blade in her hand.
“They don’t.” She considers her words. “They’re shouldn’t.” She looks him up and down, noting his blonde hair is more unruly than normal, clothes covered in a blue-silver residue. Did he roll around in the forges? “What are you doing here?”
He holds up her small pocketbook. “Your notes. My work area exploded, too.”
“I had a mishap,” Aurana says tersely. She straightens her clothes, taking one last look at the shade she was talking to. “I can’t answer any questions right now. If you’re willing to wait-“
Dáire is already nodding. “I’ll wait.”
Aurana breathes out through her nose, shoulders relaxing, and goes back to inspecting the shades. He watches her inspect them one by one, wondering what all of this is for. The souls are wrapped in clothes made of dust, each movement by them shedding small pieces of it. What kind of afterlife is this? It looks like a miserable way to spend eternity, eating nothing but dust and not even aware you died.
“They’re not here.”
They both turn at the sound of a new voice. A man in his mid-30s draws up next to them, brown hair streaked with white and hazel eyes, skin weathered from the sun. His boots and wool red overcoat look worn-in and faded from the outdoors, a blue embroidered sash about his waist not faring any better.
“Raeder.” Aurana sounds surprised to see him. “What about-“
“No new souls from our world, either.”
Aurana tries to hide her disappointment as she nods.
“She could already be reincarnated,” he says gently.
“Or in parts unknown,” she mutters, looking away and toward Dáire. “Does anyone know you’re here? If not, we should get you back.”
“Guests are owed a meal.” Raeder looks between the two, not bothering to hide his curiosity. Aurana rarely brings guests with her, especially to Kur. Whoever this is she seems comfortable enough to bring them here. “Aiofe’s made your favourite.”
That catches her attention, responsibility warring with the desire of offered food. “How much trouble will you be in if you’re late?”

What's Spring without Snow?
I swear I’m editing. I was sick of looking at the doc, so I set it aside for about a week and a half. It’s snowed twice in about three weeks in Flyover Country. I’m miserable. I’m fussy. I want a nap

Rest? What's That?
Recovery, uh, ended up having some complications. I don’t feel like getting into it, but I finally got the all clear to start easing back into doing normal daily activities and walking. On the plus side, I did finish another short story. I really need to sit down and type these up

Small Update
I hope everyone had a good holiday season! Mine was all some much needed health related procedures. I’m still resting up and it looks like recovery is going to be a little bit longer than anticipated. I can’t sit in a chair for very long just yet, but I’m on the mend. I was able to type up a little drabble between all the writing. You can read “He Who Saw the Deep” here The rough draft of Sum of…

I’m doing some overhauling of the Caeruleus Aether universe. Ideas have changed, improved, evolved. I’m excited about the changes. And I’m writing again. After years of just staring at a blank piece of paper. With all the changes and upheavals that have been happening lately, I think art will be a way to process and inspire The Illyrius Chronicles Listen, I’m writing and I have ~*An…

Randomness and Ramblings

New Readers: can begin here.
News I'm finally over the cold and Christmas has passed. I hope all of you have had a wonderful holiday season so far. Mine has been pleasant enough and I keep getting distracted by all of my new toys to write. I plan on heading down to my local gaming store to get some writing done and try to eliminate any distractions.
I've also been spending a lot of time watching Star Trek: Deep Space 9. It's actually a really good show, as far as Star Trek goes. The stories have been fantastic and the dynamics between a lot of the characters/actors have been amazing. I've watched the first two seasons and working through the third currently. Oh, yes. I'm nerdy.
A friend of mine is currently working on a story called The Shadow Conflict. It's an amazing story and she has the first book complete. She's working on the second book right now. Be sure to click on the link to read more about it and to read the story. It's highly recommended. I plan to add a banner to the right some time soon. I'm very excited for her and I hope she's able to finish the second book soon.

New Readers: can begin reading the first arc here.
News
I finished my first edit all the way through. I've added, deleted, and expanded on scenes. I thought it best that I let it sit for a few days before going back and reading it through. I read the story aloud to myself, but since I have roommates, I try to do it quietly. Travis thought it was a little weird at first, until I explained that it helped me hear any problems that I missed. I know I'll get to the point where I'm sick of working on it. My hope is that when I'm ready to send this off to my editor/beta reader before the semester starts.
News concerning the progress of the story: I did some research on trickster gods after a couple of friends made some interesting comments. I'll be picking up a few more mythology and legend books to help out with this. I'm very excited about these new tie-ins and I hope all of you will as well when I'm finally able to reveal them.
Remember that on the CA LJ there are sneak peeks, drabbles, and information not yet revealed for not only the story but also for the universe.
I'm off to do more research and continue editing, for sleep seems to be eluding me tonight.

News
I was so happy to be done with this semester that I grabbed the one desktop in the apartment (I'm engaged and we're both university students, so the laptop being down this week was pretty hard) just so I could update.
Yes, the laptop is down. Everything is fine, but it's refusing to connect to the internet. I'm a little annoyed but happy about it. I won't be distracted during waking hours by the internet. I can finish reading some of those books sitting on my nightstand and start reading a couple of others on my list. I can continue research on the Tuatha Dé Danann and on the fae in general. I can allot more time to writing. It would be nice to be able to pick up a part time job, but I swear it's almost impossible in this town during the summer.
I shouldn't complain too much. I do have an iPad that I use exclusively for school and until we have the money to take the laptop in to determine that it really is something wrong with the NIC and get it fixed, I can use that.
And I have a lot of movies and TV series to catch up on. I really don't have a lot of room to complain about "Oh teh noes! No moar internetz!" But as I said on the FB page, since I don't necessarily have reliable internet access, updates may be sporadic.

Chapter Twenty-Seven
New Readers: curious about what this new story is about can begin reading here. Continuing Readers: wondering where exactly Vearamae went can click here
Some things happened that I’ll go into more detail on the main blog. Nothing awful, but enough that it’s thrown an interesting spin on things. Life goes on, and I’m loving the new place. The cats seem happier, as well.
Off to focus on the work…
