Thinking about the run up to the attack on Abnegation from Caleb's perspective.

Finding out that Erudite was planning to use Dauntless to attack Abnegation and being too late to do much about it.

Knowing that there was a chance his parents could be killed, that there was a chance it could be Tris who ended up killing them (because I'm pretty sure he didn't know about her being Divergent at that point, so he wouldn't have known the simulation wouldn't have worked on her), and knowing that the whole thing was orchestrated by the faction he chose.

Run: A Divergent Fafiction Chapter Two

"You will stay with your old man, promise?" my father asked for the billionth time that morning.

"Promise," I responded as I turned to walk out the door with my father on my heels.

"Good," he responded as he grabbed a hold of my arm to walk to the main government building where the choosing ceremony takes place. 

It was a short walk from our small house to the government building, except when we got there, all of the Abnegation were taking the stairs, so my father insisted that we follow.

After several long flights of stairs, we finally made it to the main room.

"Go sit over there with the Priors," my father said, giving me a hug.

"Father, you know how I feel about them," I responded.

"Go sit with them," he said as he walked to the front of the room, as the leader of the government is supposed to do.

I sighed as I started to walk the stairs to where the family was sitting.

"Big day," Andrew said as I sat down beside him.

"Sure is," I responded right before Jeanine started to talk.

Soon after, my father came on and started to call names, but I was only half listening, more paying attention to the fact that I had to choose to stay with my father or take a risk and find my brother; I still didn't know what to choose.

It was a weird tradition that the children of the leaders would go last, and so I, Caleb, and Beatrice were the final three left, with our fathers being the two main leaders of Abnegation.

"Caleb Prior," my father called. I turned to look at the boy I had rarely ever seen but had still somehow been deeply in love with. He nodded his head at me as he passed, and I knew what he was going to do.

I wanted to whisper to him to not do anything stupid, but I knew much better than to interfere. 

When he got to the front, he dragged the new knife over his hand; I could feel his father tense beside me when he raised his hand over the bowl for Erudite rather than Abnegation and squeezed.

"Erudite," my father called, sounding shocked to see Caleb change; after all, it's rare to have an Abnegation change factions, let alone one of the faction leaders.

Once a new knife was put out, my father called the younger Prior sibling, the one I hated.

Beatrice walked to the front, and what shocked me most was when she changed where her blood was going to fall from Abnegation to Dauntless. When she did this, we could sense the room freeze; after all, Andrew and Natalie Prior were really good parents, especially when compared to my dad. 

"Savannah Eaton," my father called, meeting my eyes as I stood up, and the moment I did, I knew what I was going to choose.

When I got up to the front and was about to cut my hand, I looked up at my father, and he gave me a comforting smile, one he's never given me.

I took a deep breath and winced in pain when I dragged the sharp knife over my palm. 

I gently set the knife down on the towel and raised my hand to the farthest one on my right.

If my brother and I were alike, we both would know, even without inside knowledge of Dauntless, that selflessness and bravery weren't that different.

The moment my blood fell onto the steaming hot coals of Dauntless, I looked up to see my father's gaze; when I met his eyes, I gave him a challenging look, telling him that I knew my brother was alive and that one way or another I was going to find him.

I turned around and walked to the Dauntless and stood beside Beatrice. Soon Jeanine came back on stage and began to talk for a few more minutes before we left. 

As usual, Dauntless was the first to leave; one minute we were walking down the stairs, and the next we were running. When we ran through the doors and into the bright daylight, I could feel the wind blowing through my hair, and I felt a sense of freedom that I thought I was never going to feel.

When we got to the area below the tracks for the train, people began climbing, and so I began to climb as well. Soon everyone was at the top, and a train started to come our way at full speed without slowing down.

"Are you guys mad?" Someone yelled when they realized what we were about to do, but no one responded.

I ran at full speed and jumped onto the train like everyone else. Beatrice was the last one to make it on the train.

After a while, people started to move to the open doors on the train and started to jump onto the building across from the train. I walked to the back of the train and got a running start and was the second person from my cart to jump onto the building.

As I rolled on the gravel of the building, I started to laugh at this maybe being my new life, of being able to run and jump and be free.

A guy named Eric introduced himself to all of us and told us the first step of initiation was to jump down a towering hole. No one wanted to.

Except Beatrice was the first one to do so; she shocked everyone, especially me, by volunteering to do so.

After she did, a girl from Candor jumped, and then a few from Dauntless until I decided that I would do it.

I felt a wave of nervousness wrap around my body as the cold wind blew against my skin. I took a deep breath and jumped.

I could feel the wind wrap around me as the gravity pushed me down, and I realized if my brother wasn't here, this was still the place I belonged.

When I hit the net, a guy helped me out.

"What's your name?" He asked, looking me in the eyes.

I opened my mouth to respond but shut it, not wanting to have anything to do with my father.

"You can pick a new one, but make it good; you can only pick once," he responded after seeing me open and close my mouth.

"Sava," I responded, using the main nickname my brother used to call me as a kid.

I saw something flash in his eyes, but he quickly nodded his head and called out my name while pointing me towards the group of initiates.

Once we were all down there, the man began talking, "My name is Four. I will be one of your trainers while you all compete to become Dauntless."

"What happened? One through three were taken?" A girl named Christina asked who immediately shut her mouth when the man spoke back to her.

While we were burning our clothes from our old factions, I could feel Four's eyes watching me; I wanted to turn around and tell him to stop, but being the daughter of an Abnegation leader, I knew better than to do so.

When I sat down at the table, I heard Tris (Beatrice) and Christina talking to Four about who knows what. I sighed as I looked down at the thing on my plate I've never seen before.

"Never seen a hamburger before?" A boy said behind me.

"My dad never let me eat meat," I responded.

"Abnegation is one crazy faction," the boy said as he sat down beside me.

"Jonah Lelav," the boy, Jonah said.

"Sava," I responded.

"Weird name," he responded.

"It's the nickname my brother used to call me," I responded as I took a bite out of the weird meat.

"What happened to him?" Jonah asked.

"Not sure," I responded.

"Are you a transfer I've never seen you before," he said.

"Yeah, you?" I asked.

"Not important," he responded as he started to eat his food.

I nodded my head and began to eat the new food.

Later that night, after Four and Eric went over all of the precautions of the initiation we needed to know right now, we all went to bed with full stomachs.

As I laid my head onto my pillow, I began to think about how freeing this place was and that if I could pass initiation, this feeling could stay with me forever, but quickly after, my thoughts began to drift off to Tobias and wanting to know what happened to my brother. Where he might be? And if I'll ever see him again?
