Juanito Madrigal✨🧡
The "Copy Cat". He will have the gift of copying others' gifts temporarily in times of need.
Tumblr media
Juanito almost looks like a replica of his papa, but he behaves oppositely to Camilo. He's the little angel. He's a soft little boy, very sweet, very timid and humble, and he's so attached to his mami. He's never mischievous like his dad and his older siblings. That's how he is, even while he is growing up.
Funfact:
His mami calls him gatito sometimes
He's afraid of scissors
He randomly stares at his papa for long periods and loves watching him perform.
He loves copying his brother Carlos' power just to turn himself into a cat. (In the future)

I just watched Encanto for the first time and here’s my rundown of the Madrigals’ gifts:
Antonio: The rats told me my uncle is in the walls.
Mirabel: I’m the family therapist that keeps this house together… literally.
Camilo: I can shape-shift!
Dolores: …I need to go live with monks.
Isabela: Don’t make your abuela a flower, or you will be forced into godhood.
Luisa: Eldest Daughter Syndrome
Pepa: If I’m emotionally unstable, so is the sky!
Julieta: I heal people through the sheer power of arepas.
Bruno: I can tell you if your house will break down, and you’re asking me if your hairline is receding??? At age 50??????
Alma: Candle.

The designs and info of isa’s family!!
Tumblr media
Firstly Isabela! The mother of Camilo, Antonio and Dolores!! Her life is pretty rough, she was 6 when her father was taken away from her, while witnessing everything. She had a shitty ass husband who made her family’s life a miserable, the only reason she even married him was because of Alma, and arranged marriage. She divorced him 2 years ago and now she’s happily single. Alma still pressures her in this au too but since the divorce Alma has become much more softer and lowered her standards. Before she had Dolores though she had 2 miscarriages because of her husband!
Isabela was a crazy teenager, she also had a normal sistly relationship with mirabel, sometimes she was maybe mean but she knows mirabel knew she didn’t mean it, at least she thinks that. Her life changed when mirabel disappeared, not having mirabel in her wedding or when she had her kids was the worst. Since then she made sure her family was happy so they wouldn’t wanna leave like mirabel too.
It’s true that Isabela is a protective mother and maybe strict (like asian moms) but she’s the most caring person at the same time. You would never catch her be mean to Dolores or any other little kid. She has a nickname for every family member and a flower too!
Tumblr media
Camilo is the eldest grandkid, being more than 5 years older than the others is hard for him, he constantly needs to “be a good influence”. Instead he is the most unserious grandkid, but the funniest! Alma tried to get him arranged with many girls but he passed them since he got eyes for an other person ;) He also had a pretty rough childhood because of his father, he abused him often without Isabela knowing and he was a pretty bad trouble kid. He had a close bond with his Tia mirabel though! Many called them “the age gap twins!” Isabela never complained. Camilo is a smoker, not a badly one just the one who smokes time to time, he got the addiction from his father :\ Camilo is 100% a mama’s boy.
He is a hardworking boy, charming and caring. Yet also trouble some and annoying too, he loves it to annoy his younger siblings or cousins, which they all hate from him besides Pepa. Him and Pepa have special bond, it often reminds him of the bond of him and mirabel, he and pepa often do pranks on others together or are just being besties together. He does have a lot going on which he hates, he is called “the one who never cares” often even though it is just hard for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Antonio!! He is as tall as canon mirabel in this au, and a bit chubby!! Antonio is a very shy kid and barely doesn’t have any friends, besides his idiotic trio friends, Juancho-Cecilia-Alejandra! The best four group you would see in town, he loves them very much as friends. Like Camilo, Antonio has a got a bd childhood, experiencing the same abuse as Camilo got. That hit his social life a lot and has made him isolated too, his friends and family kept him up the bad weather, which he is thankful for. He got a scar at his lip because when he was very little, he was playing with a Jaguar cup and the mother jaguar approached him and attacked him, just luckily hurting his lip before Diego saved him. (That jaguar turned out to be parces mother!) he’s still pretty childish in this au which makes him adorable, Alma tries to make him get more friends or more popular but he refuses often.
He’s a deliver boy! His main chore is delivering stuff around the down, he doesn’t like it very much but it’s just what he’s got to do, he thinks his gift could be much more useful but no one will listen to him. He’s the second eldest in the family and he quiet does act like a good influence, if it wasn’t for Julieta, Julieta is confirmed to be the best one out of the grandkids. (Well by Alma to say the least.) that doesn’t stop him from still having an good relationship with her.
Tumblr media
Dolores is also a shy kid, shy enough for her to get nervous with her family too! She’s a free child who likes music and drawing a lot. Dolores is left unattended often since she’s quiet mature her age but she doesn’t like it to be alone. Her gift ceremony was a half month ago and it’s her nightmare, Dolores hates her gift but in the other side likes it slightly too. It has its own purpose. She didn’t have a too much bad childhood like Antonio and Camilo but unlike them she was a huge daddy’s girl. If he would’ve pushed her away or screamed at her she would still come back because she actually truly loved her dad no matter what but one day when she was 3 he randomly came to her and broke her leg (the reason Isabela divorced him) which broke her heart and now that he’s gone she is heart broken often, but she has grown more attached to antonio and isabela, if you would try and find her just go to either one of them and she’s there with them!
Later on she will meet someone called “senorita maripose” who she will talk to everyday is secret. For her senorita mariposa is a goddess guard guiding her home, like in a fairy tale (at least that’s what she got told by the woman.) Dolores doesn’t have any friends besides her best friend Mariano! She gets to see him very often and she loves him more than anything (not in a love way, they’re still kids!) they do make trouble often together and he’s the one only one who knows about senorita mariposa.
Tumblr media
Ivan….yea…don’t got to say much about him. He is not a great guy since he grew up in a weird family. He got arrested 7 years in prison for child abuse and after Isabela found out what he had done everything she destroyed him. But at least he deserved it. He did pretty bad stuff.
Any thoughts on isa’s family? ;)

HAPPY MILK DAY‼️‼️🎊🎊🥳🥳🥳
For those who are confused: milk is now a meme in the Encanto fandom, somehow - and people came up with the idea for today to be an official milk day!
I've got more crack content coming👀👀 and a certain something for a birthday girl 👀👀👀👀 @glitternightingale,,, but first! Here's some wholesome fluff! 💕💕
~
Summary: Pepa and Julieta bond over the comfort that is breastfeeding.
~~
It was a coincidence that their first pregnancies were so close, with Isabela being slightly older than Dolores; although it was difficult to adjust to the noise of a baby's cry, doubled, it did end up coming in handy: the girls could calm each other down, play with each other and give their working parents a well deserved break, without even realising it.
Julieta's second pregnancy was the first she pioneered without a twin situation by her side-but like everything her sister did, she did it perfectly... All until she started having complications. Luisa was a hefty baby, Pepa never thought she'd ever see a baby bump that big. When her niece was born, she was all tub and endearing wrinkles, she was beautiful. But Julieta had been exhausted; weak and frail, so unlike her usually. Her lower half stained with blood; it was a day full of complicated feelings.
But! Now they were back in action, the Madrigal sisters, cooking up buns in synchronisation again! This time, Pepa's would be slightly older, which made for some good childish banter. Mamá still insisted they work, always had while they were pregnant - but maybe the lingering thought of Julieta's previous due date changed her... Because she was assigning them significantly less labour than before. This gave them plenty of free time, most of which was with their husbands and brother; Félix and Agustín weren't magical descendants, them being out and about didn't really help any, especially Agustín - who caused more trouble than he was worth.
Bruno was naturally a shut in, with good reason. Pepa and Julieta accepted this, knowing how he felt without him having to describe it; they were triplets. They were so happy to be spending more time with their baby brother.
Another source of happiness, was daydreaming about their babies. Bruno had already managed to predict that Pepa would be having a boy. The first boy since himself! This was a momentous occasion! He'd be treated like the little prince he was, Pepa was so thrilled! Her elder sister was still waiting in anticipation. They sometimes talked about the prospect of having two boys and how amazing that'd be! But Juli was adamant she was having another girl.
"I can just tell, my little Mariposa." She’d say, patting her round belly.
One afternoon, their conversations lead to the sweetest of topics:
"I missed feeding Luisa so much when she stopped." Juli reminisced, rocking gently in her chair, "The bonding felt more intense than with Isa, such a comforting feeling, I especially needed it back then."
Pepa nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes! Me too with Dolores! I can't wait to have that feeling again."
A rainbow materialised above their heads.
A few months later, Camilo Madrigal was born. Indeed, the first Madrigal boy since Bruno, Alma was especially proud, kissing her grandson and her daughter on their flushed cheeks. Because Julieta was out of commission, being heavily pregnant herself, the clean-up effort was done by the men (well, that isn’t to say they didn’t help before- but Julieta was definitely the ringleader of the operation). Félix held his son, rocking him expertly to sleep whilst simultaneously, passionately kissing his wife, Agustín changed his sister in law's sheets, and Bruno cleaned her face with a damp rag.
The sun had shone brighter that day.
Mirabel Madrigal soon followed, a miracle baby. She was so easy to birth and cried softly, almost as if she knew about her cousin's hearing and wanted to be courteous. A selfless little girl, right from the start.
Months past since that day and today, a gorgeously sunny sky was painted above, for all to see and Bruno Madrigal was left to babysit his older nieces. They played with their new siblings and saw them plenty- but there were also times they were meant to leave them alone. They had been asking for them all morning; Bruno hadn’t seen his sister’s or their babies at all today, nor did he hear them. What if they were all sleeping and he disturbed them? Dolores confirmed that they were napping for a brief period.
He left it for about half an hour before knocking on the nursery door, carefully. A voice from within prompted him to open it. He peaked his head inside, keeping the rambunctious children behind his thin legs, just in case.
“The girls want to see the bebés.” Bruno took in the scene: Mira and Cami were missing from their twin cribs, across from Luisa's bed. They were instead, in their mother’s arms, both of which, were sat in two respective chairs, looking fresh faced and well rested. He noticed how his niblings were eating, cautiously, he pushed the door back towards him, unsure if his sisters would allow them in right now. “Is this a good time?”
However, Pepa and Julieta smiled.
“Sure, come on in, Brunito, niñas.”

At those words, Isa finally broke through the barrier that was her uncle and threw open the door; thankfully, Bruno caught it before it could slam against the wall- Isabela, Dolores and Luisa walked in, well, Dolores walked, her cousins practically sprinted.
To make sure the girls wouldn’t try anything, Bruno pulled Isa and Luisa into his lap after sitting on the latter’s bed. Dolores sat beside him, unprompted and polite. He could trust her to behave.
“What are you doing?” Isabela bluntly asked, a twinge of annoyance in her voice; she expected Mirabel to be more... alive. Not stuck to their mother, eyes closed and lips pursed.
“They’re feeding your brother and your sister.” Bruno explained.
Luisa craned her neck this way and that, “I don’t see a bottle.”
“No, Luisa, it comes from our bodies.” Pepa snorted.
“Blood?!” Isabela chimed in, smile big and fists clenched, Bruno bounced her on his knee. Luisa groaned in disgust and pulled on his ruana.
“Tío Brunito, tell her to stop!”
Bruno died a little inside- his sisters laughed at his expense. No amount of eye rolls could convey his disappointment.
“Didn’t we tell you to stop calling your tío that?” Julieta giggled.
“But you guys call him it.” Luisa frowned.
“It’s different.” Pepa smiled, shaking her head amusedly.
“It’s not blood, Isa, it’s milk.” Bruno booped her nose, trying to move on from what just happened as quickly as possible.
“Huh? Milk?”
“Hmm mm.”
“I thought everyone knew that.” Dolores mumbled, incredulous.
“That’s so cool.” Isa said, a breeze of flowers passed through her hair, confirming her statement, “Does it come in your favourite flavour?”
Bruno chuckled, as did his sisters. Dolores looked expressionless to the untrained eye- but the triplets could tell she was bursting to scold her cousin for her naïveté.
“No, amor, just ordinary milk.” Pepa said.
“When do they eat normal?” Luisa babbled, trying to climb up her mother’s arm.
“Soon but not yet, just liquids for now.” Julieta beamed. Bringing down a hand to stroke her toddler’s cheek.
“Why?” She nuzzled into her calloused palm. The adults breathed a huff of mirth at the common question.
“Their teeth haven’t come out yet.” Dolores hushed, finally having enough, it seemed. “The sound of them is horrible!” the little girl covered her ears, as if saying it would bring about the sound.
“Aww...” Bruno stroked her hair; she hugged his side, pushing her face into the green wool of his clothes.

“So, are you sure they don’t come in different flavours?” Isabela sounded sceptical. “Because they’re still drinking and I don’t think plain milk is that good.” Sassily flipping her hair, she stood, attempting to draw her sister’s attention away from this apparently, irresistible, completely ordinary milk.
“Mira! Hurry up, I want to play with you!”

Laughter filled Casita.

I just imagine something cute!
You know that family tree in the kitchen? What if Dolores has the same thing in her room but with Mariano and her kids?
Bisabuela Rosa at the top of the tree. Mariano + Dolores in the middle. And the children start from youngest to oldest, Starting with Diego to Victorio.
Also, here's a few picrews you can use to design the kids (if you'd like) -
Bighead kid picrew
Pixel friend
Makowka character maker
And some from books + movie
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AAA THAT IS ADORABLEEEEE!! I will definitely make one after I have the design for every kid!!
New kids unlocked!!! And lore 💪
Okay firstly the tree kids, the one in the front, frisco segundo madrigal and her brother, vicenta segundo madrigal (decided to make them siblings since they look alike to be siblings 👍) their sister (who was their step sister in their past family) Patricia ortuno madrigal!! They lived in a not so great household, often having to take care of themselves since their parents didn’t care, they didn’t get parental love neither did they get cared for good, their parents ended up in jail from some fight and since then Dolores took care of them!! (She basically did before but now they live with her) all of them are 5 year olds!
Tumblr media
The two girls wanted their hair to be like Dolores!! Also some earrings :D and Camilo showed vicenta some outfits he might like, which he loved!!
Onto the nexttt, the ginger head is rafaela lazcano madrigal!! He is an orphan, he was in a lot of foster homes, some great and some awful, in the end he got adopted by Dolores since his past foster family was not so great and he also hated hopping into a new foster home every few weeks. He is 7 year old!!
Esmerelda Jerez madrigal!! She did have a parent who cared (her father) who then later on left, her mother didn’t like her since birth since she claimed that esmerelda wasnt her child. Esmerelda actually came from an other town!! Since her mother had left her in this town alone and then left without her. Ofc, Dolores who heard all of this immediately went to her, and now she lives with Dolores :D she is 8 years old!!
Leandra henriquez madrigal! Was the neighbor from Mariano, his parents always left him alone at home, leaving leandra with no food, no money, no nothing. Mariano noticed it and started to take care of him, later on Dolores joined too. He firstly was hesitating (he struggles a lot with anondment issue like Esmerelda) but then he opened up, they took care of him till they fully took him in! (His parents never came home after one night.) He looks up to Mariano a lot and hopes to become a lot like him. He also is 8 years old!
Tumblr media
Camilo trying to make fun of Camilo but it just ended up being humiliating for him!! (He couldn’t rafeala for more than 3 seconds) leandra is getting impressed by how strong he is and Esmeralda is admiring mirabels sewing skills!!
The last one is the two siblings, Bronco and Almira socarras madrigal!! (Decided to switch the names with ages) Bronco, who is a curious 3 year old, and his baby sister almira. The 1 year old almira takes a lot from his brother, their curiousy takes Dolores a whole level away!! Their parents didn’t care much about them, mostly letting them outside in the garden not knowing the danger (Dolores had to save them multiple times,) and only doing stuff with them when it comes over to fame. (They care a lot about how people judge them.) In the end, the house was in a fire, dolores safely secured them before any real harm happened. Luckily it was just some scars but it was still very traumatic for them.
Tumblr media
Bronco loves candy, but Dolores doesn’t let him eat that much since he’s got a small stomach which gets bad fastly but his Abuela makes sure he gets some daily ;)
Almira loves admiring and touching faces (mostly Dolores’s and isabela’s :D) she’s very curious!!
Thanks a lot for the suggestions!!🩵

Baby Mirabel AU: Grandkids night routine
* Isabela routine when it’s her turn with Mirabel for the night is very simple
* She makes sure all of her most dangerous plants are far away from her
* She would change her diaper and the way to distract her would be with a vine
* She would swing the vine back and forth as a way for Mirabel to keep her eyes on it
* She would grow different bright color flowers in it such as sunflowers
* She would put Mirabel in a bright lilac purple shirt to sleep in, with no pants
* She would hum as she walk around her room, she would grow chamomile flowers so the room would smell like it
* By the time Mirabel fell asleep Isabella is also pretty tired
* So she would get into bed with Mirabel making sure Mirabel is close by just in case and go to sleep
* Listening to her baby sister’s breathing
* Luisa would make sure that Mirabel have the best spot on her bed
* I probably mentio before, but she would be surrounded by pillows
* At least eight of them
* Luisa is scare she will just roll over and crush Mirabel
* She would make sure that her back would net touch her
* Before bed she would feed Mirabel
* Probably burp her with two fingers
* She can do it with one
* She is the type to play peekaboo in bed
* Would let Mirabel play with her hair while it’s down
* Would give her a purple onesie to wear and tie a little red ribbon loosely on her ankle
* Let Mirabel sleep with her the least because of her fear
* Dolores would change her diaper before bed
* She’s the grandchild most confident in diaper changes
* She would squeak a lot and everytime she does Mirabel would smile
* Put her in her lap and let her watch her take her makeup off
* Mirabel is oddly still as she watches
* Mirabel’s eyes sparkle everytime Dolores takes her hair down
* It’s her favorite moment with the baby
* Dolores is so well known for her red lipstick
* Mirabel would touch her lip with her small hand and then would look at it with wonder
* Dolores let her everytime
* She would put Mirabel on her chest and open the book on her stand
* Mirabel would listen to her heartbeat as she read to her
* The gentle quiet voice, the book and her heartbeat is all that is needed for Mirabel to go to sleep
* Dolores would then stop talking and read quietly finishing the chapter
* Then she would wrap her arms around Mirabel and fall asleep just like that
* Camilo would take her to her mama or even his Mami to change her diaper before he would take her to his room.
* He would even feed Mirabel while walking to bed, with his Mami
* Just in case. He would then go to his room
* He has a lot of mirrors so he would take her to each one
* Their would be stage curtains in the front
* Behind it is his bed, it’s around a king size
* He would just lay Mirabel in the middle and lay next to her, he would be on his side
* Camilo is the type to watch her sleep, he loves seeing her chest moves up and down
* It tells him she is alive (and not sick)
* He would cuddle closer and fall asleep like that
* If she is fussy he would hum and pat her in a rhythm
* It puts her to sleep every time
* Antonio is the least likely to sleep alone with Mirabel
* Since he is the youngest, it would turn into sleepovers
* At least one of the older kids are with them, sometimes even the adults
* Bruno is who Antonio and Mirabel go to the most
* If for some reason they DO sleep alone it is not bad
* Antonio would just lay Mirabel on his chest
* Mirabel is a premie, she is also smaller than most premies so she can fit on Antonio’s chest without an problem
* He would just keep her there while his arms are wrap around her
* Parce, would be underneath the two of them
* Antonio would make sure she has a clean diaper already since he don’t know how
* He would feed her and his animal friends are the first defense
* Felix almost got killed by the animals once, he found Mirabel and Antonio sleeping
* He pick her up, the lack of warmth made Mirabel cry and all the animals in the room came swarming at Felix
* It took Antonio to make them not attack anyone in the family

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Encanto (2021) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Bruno Madrigal & Pepa Madrigal, Bruno Madrigal & Camilo Madrigal Characters: Bruno Madrigal, Pepa Madrigal, Camilo Madrigal Additional Tags: Dysfunctional Family, Family Shenanigans, Grumpy Bruno Madrigal, he's back baby! Series: Part 14 of Welcome to the Family Weirdo Club Summary:
Bruno tangles with an old rival.
Happy birthday @captaincravatthecapricious!! In your honour (and kinda in an accidental mirror of sokka’s fic!), Grumpy Bruno makes his return. Hope you’re had a wonderful day!! x
Gustavo Torres always thought of himself as a pillar of the community. More than some he could mention.
Married for thirteen years, two beautiful children, a quietly flourishing business – Padre said pride was a sin, but Gustavo knew that how he felt about his life was justified, which made it more than fine in the eyes of his Lord, he was sure – members of the community were always shaking his hand as he passed, calling out his name simply to wave hello. And he was friendly with the Madrigals, of course. Why, he and Pepa had been childhood sweethearts, back in the day! That alone proved his standing to be true.
It was just a shame that the Madrigals themselves could not pick the members of their familia.
Gustavo had seen him around the Encanto these past few months, of course. Helping rebuild La Casita after his folly – and the folly of that girl, Julieta’s youngest – had brought a staple of the village crashing down around their ears. Just as he should. But there had also been the days when the prodigal seer had been, well, seen just playing with the children – honestly, the man was fifty-one years old! – or wandering alone, head in the clouds as it’d always been. It made Gustavo – hardworking, enterprising, humble Gustavo Torres – seethe. Wherever he’d been, it certainly hadn’t changed Bruno Madrigal for the better. What a disappointment he must be.
“Remind me again why I’ve gotta tag along?” Bruno asked, absently rubbing his hand up and down his sleeve. Pepa tossed her hair in a way that was both gently frustrated mother and haughty, bratty older sister all in one swift movement.
“Camilo needs new shoes for church. You need fresh air. We’ll kill two birds with one stone.”
Bruno and his sobrino let out twin groans of despair, reluctant to go any further even as they approached the edge of town. Pepa took their hands – “Mamá, I’m sixteen, get offff…” – and led them both like lost puppydogs along the cobbled street. “See!” she chirped, beaming a smile Bruno’s way, “it’s a nice day. A little breeze, lots of sun, good for your skin…”
“Uh, Mamá,” Camilo muttered, tugging on Pepa’s hand, “You might wanna reconsider that ‘nice day’ part.”
Walking towards them, tapping his new, carved walking stick on the ground (not that he needed it, but it was a very expensive walking stick), was Gustavo Torres. He clocked the trio, smiled, and sped up his gait to catch them. Camilo groaned. Bruno cringed. Pepa scowled.
“Pepa Madrigal,” Gustavo said, falling into step beside Pepa – nudging Bruno out of the way – “it’s been a while.”
“I saw you at church last Sunday, Gustavo.”
“Was it so long ago?” Torres smiled, looping his hand through the crook of Pepa’s free arm. Leaning around his Mamá’s back, Camilo mimed making a noose and wrapping it around his neck. Bruno swatted at him, darting a nervous look at his sister as Camilo stuck out his tongue and crossed his eyes, pretending to be dead. “Not funny, Milo.”
“Did you say something, Brunito?” Pepa arched an eyebrow at her brother, and he cringed under Gustavo’s glare.
“Uh, uh – I mean, no. Sorry Pep.”
Gustavo snorted. “‘Pep.’ Didn’t you call her that when we were children?”
“Uh, I-I guess, I probably did…”
“Your sister is a mother of three now, Bruno. You should call her by the name she was christened with.” Gustavo sniffed, and turned back to Pepa, launching into some monologue about his stupid bag-making business. The one that everyone knew was more his wife’s passion project than his own. Francisca was a devil with a needle and thread – Mirabel adored her, though she stopped popping into the shop for sewing tips when Gustavo had told her they’d have to start charging for his wife’s time.
Camilo’s eyebrows were almost at his hairline. Bruno rolled his eyes, fluttering his hand in what he hoped was a ‘let it go’ gesture. He’d gotten in trouble – big trouble – a long time ago for letting his mouth run around Torres. He wasn’t about to sully his new, not-the-black-sheep reputation for a cabrón like him.
“How is your mother? It must have been such a shock,” Gustavo said, his cane tapping on the ground like flint, “losing her home like that.”
Pepa ground her teeth, and a tiny wisp of a cloud appeared over her head. Gustavo hadn’t made himself available for rebuilding efforts; only coming around to offer his services on the day the magic returned.
“She’s fine, Gustavo. We all are – we’re…adjusting.”
Gustavo nodded, his gaze sliding to Bruno. “That’s very fair. It must have been a lot to adjust to; especially the homecoming of someone who perhaps wasn’t…expected.”
Bruno winced like he’d been slapped. Camilo leaned around his mother again, now miming stabbing Gustavo in the back. ‘Kill him,’ Bruno’s sobrino mouthed, ‘Kill him!’
Ay dios, he looked like his mother’s son in that moment – usually, Bruno saw more of Camilo’s sunny, playful father in him, despite all the sass. He shook his head violently, and Camilo tutted.
“Mami,” Camilo said with a clearing of his throat, “we really need to get to the –”
“Ah, yes – you were heading into town.” Gustavo shot Bruno a look. “Bruno, I’m sure you can handle taking Camilo on his errands. Pepa; I was wondering if we could take a walk over the bridge together while we wait?”
Torres’ expression became sly. “For old times’ sake?”
Ah. At that, something hot and indignant sparked in Bruno’s chest, fanned by the memories of a pushy, arrogant Torres hanging around Casita like a bad smell when they were seventeen; cheap flowers and candies that Pepa never ate, veiled euphemisms that made her uncomfortable, boasts about his father’s money, his ambition, what he could do for her as a potential suitor – what he could do! For Pepa Madrigal!
“Gustavo,” Pepa said, patience finally running out, “that isn’t a good idea.”
“No, it’s fine.” Gustavo’s grip tightened. “It’ll be –”
And then he tugged on her arm. That was the final straw.
“From what I remember,” Bruno said, anger roiling in his chest, “you could never keep Francisca Flores satisfied for more than two minutes. Y’not gonna be able to juggle another woman, Torres, you’ll wear yourself out.”
Gustavo’s mouth opened and closed as they came to a sudden stop. Pepa’s eyes widened. Camilo was delighted. Bruno tried not to look at him, focusing on staring up at Torres and trying not to blink.
“How,” Gustavo snarled, “dare you speak to me like that, you –”
“‘You all-powerful seer of the future?’ Was that what y’gonna say?” Bruno crossed his arms, weight shifting to one hip. “‘Coz I could tell you that when Francisca finds out you’ve been hitting on my sister again, first thing she’s gonna break is that ornamental pot your Mamá got you for your wedding. Over your head.” Bruno smiled as creepily as he could, and Gustavo took a step back – right into Pepa.
“And she will find out, Gustavo,” she said, softly as the rolling thunder than crept around her shoulders. Her eyes were bright with malice as she took Bruno’s hand. “Because I’ll tell her. Right after I take my son – and my brother – on our errands. Now run along.”
A flash of lightning backlit the Madrigal siblings, just for a second, in blinding white light. Bruno’s hands itched to pull up his ruana hood, to complete the image.
“Y-you’re all the same,” Gustavo stammered. “You’re all…all…”
Pepa smiled, small and feral. “Damn right we are.”
Gustavo stammered an excuse, walked backwards for a pace or two, and then scurried away.
“Yeeeeeaaaah,” Camilo crowed, curling his fingers into a very rude gesture. “Get fuuuuuuuu—”
“Camilo Pedro Madrigal.”
“Sorry, Mami. Sorry.” As they restarted their walk, Camilo leaned around his mother’s back one more time – now offering his palm for a high five. Bruno rolled his eyes affectionately, then slapped his sobrino’s palm with a wink.
A sullied reputation never felt so good.
