Why Corazon ❤️‍🔥and Law's 🐯 relationship isn't Father and son coded!

Here's an small thread to why, canonically speaking, Cora and Law don't have this kind of relationship even when Law were younger.

Now, I'm not stupid. I know what you're gonna say "ofc you would say that, you're one of the freaks". That's why I'm writing this,

to prove that there's no freaks here. And is all a matter of point of view and interpretation!

Enough said, let's be straight to the point.

We have some kind of interesting found family dynamics in One piece!

Like Uta and Shanks,

Nami, her sister and Bellemere,

Luffy and his brothers.

Sanji and Zeff,

Zoro and Kuina

Franky and Tom,

And etc.

But all these side characters happen to substitute their problematic or non existent family! That's how Oda writes.

In Law's case, he had a father and had a mother and a sister. So none of this could ever be substituted. He loved them very much and carried them in his memory, his hat and then in his life. Since he becomes a doctor after all!

He never admitted to see Cora this ways. Never ever. And isn't like he had no opportunities.

"But he's too cold for that!"

Nuh uh!

He openly tells Luffy that "Doflamingo killed someone he loved a long time ago."

Till then, we have never see he open this much.

And while we have characters like Sanji, who's pride can be bigger than Luffy's hungriness, the Cook didn't lost the opportunity to tell his true (shit) father, who's really is his dad. Zeff. Who took care and also saved him.

And when I say "took care ", is really raising a teenager he saved from starving. Not kidnapping! (ilv u Cora)

We have to keep on mind, that Cora and Law only got together for 6 months alone. But even that, was enough to make Law (kind of creeply) obsessed with Cora.

Again, Canon only, the way Law See's Cora's is unique. He is his benefactor (was), his savior. Being deep honest, Law sees him like some kind of Jesus. A religious figure. That he holds in his heart and in his daily life.

Cora inspired him in his Jolly Roger, in his tattoos, in his pirate crew name, in everything!

He felt so grateful to that man, he loved him so much it surpass any kind of love.

It's different from Zeff and Sanji,

different from Nami and Bellemere,

Different from Uta and Shanks

Different from any kind of confirmed family relationship

(even Perona and Moria are confirmed)

Law is basically christian at this point and Cora is his religion!

That's how Oda decided to portray them.

as OBVIOUS as it is, yes, Of course you can still see them like father and son if you want. You can see them as bros, as roomies, idk. You're free to do whatever you want!

Because that's what's One piece is about.

However, don't go around saying they're canonically father and son, just because you feel that way.

i read this fic in one go, in less than a day. all 176k words of it. my chest hurts and i'm feeling so many things and i'll try to put some of it in words.

you must be wondering how i managed to finish a 176k fic in less than a day. that's because im obsessive and insane when it comes to things i like and i really fucking liked this fic. and rightfully so. i did not cry reading this, but throughout this beautifully written piece of work, i felt like the author had my heart in their hands. it hurts still.

the technical aspects of this are as follows: the characterization of zoro, sanji, perona and mihawk are beyond perfect. the flow, the pacing, the everything was so well done, it's downright baffling. how could someone execute something so. intricate and detailed and raw so well? i can't find any faults even if i nitpick. i'm saying this in an objective and subjective way- this fic was nothing short of a wonder.

and now, as for my personal views. before we delve into the topic of the zoro/sanji relationship, i NEED to acknowledge the relationship between sanji, zoro, perona and mihawk. they are an eccentric bunch and they never outright declare their love for each other but it's there it's there it's there. it's so glaringly obvious, you can almost hear it sing. the subtle introduction of mihawk/shanks dynamic, while not examined in detail, still left a deep impact. both in the story and in me as a reader. every character is filled with so much life that they are no longer characters. this is a hard feat to achieve and the author achieves it all so effortlessly, or so it seems.

as for zoro and sanji i just. i can't formulate words. it's all about love. it's always about love. when is it ever not?

Sanji breathes in. “When?” he asks. “When did you…fall in love with me?”

“There is no when,” he says simply. “Do you know when you grow taller? Do you know when you grow older? You don’t. It just happens. Natural as anything. And you can’t stop it.”

this seems so simple but. isn't that all love is about? this story strips down love to it's very core and makes us watch it for the raw, ugly, beautiful, miraculous thing it is. it's all so. god, i just can't say it in words. i rushed to write this bigass review after reading it and now i can't even say anything except my chest hurts my chest hurts and this was beautiful. this was so, so beautiful.

Zoro tells him everything. <- Ace calls him 'baby' - Ace feels like he Gets Zoro now. FR this time. But... Ace still hasn't told him... - "Zoro deserves better, that much is obvious, but he's already chosen to be with Ace, and thus his mind won't be changed. All Ace can do is become a man worthy of this." - Zoro and Perona hug when they get back to the castle. He whispers to her. Perona says she loves him. Tells him to tap out next time - Zoro calls Ace 'babe' but it's mostly joking. Calls Perona 'P'. She shoots negative ghosts at them - Zoro's - their - room - Ace feels small and needy and cracked open. Needs to feel held and covered and safe - epic Zoro topping dot png - the ^ exemplifies the change in their relationship. the easy understanding, the reciprocity, the boundless + overt love. it's about trust w/o being shy abt it. - "Ace has never cried during sex before, but he's not humiliated, nor does he try to hide it." - Zoro calls him 'baby' in the heat of the moment - Ace says he loves Zoro + Zoro says "I know" and Ace is 100% okay with that

The Voyage So Far: Thriller Bark

the tone of thriller bark is super fun- the combination of horror and comedy is done really well, and i like how it’s set at the very start, with the introduction of a seemingly terrifying situation and character (brook and his ghost ship) that are very quickly revealed to be anything but. 

i also like that we hear singing and see music notes before we ever even see brook. we’re associating our musician with music before we even know him. 

brook’s recruitment is delightful, and so very luffy. of course he would want a talking skeleton musician on his crew, and of course he wouldn’t be fazed by brook in the slightest except to think he’s cool. i love him a lot. 

for the most part, thriller bark isn’t actually scary despite its horror theming- but it does get some good moments in, and of them, i think the reveal of cindry’s room is definitely the best. it’s not scary, necessarily, but it’s deeply creepy, and only becomes more so when you learn why it’s like that and what exactly hogback did. 

i love how team-based thriller bark feels. especially immediately following water 7/enies lobby (in which two crewmates leave and the crew has to deal with a ton of internal strife) and preceding sabaody (where the crew gets separated), it’s just so nice. it’s most obvious in the team fight versus oars (and i’ll get to that later because i LOVE it), but also in smaller moments like robin and franky’s team fight against the spider zombie.

the team just feels so cohesive in thriller bark, and it’s really good. robin and franky are the two newest crewmates, but they already trust each other enough to pull off some fantastic teamwork. 

usopp is really good in thriller bark. he also has the best outfit in this entire arc. 

my two favorite fights in this arc are usopp versus perona and zoro versus ryuuma, for very different reasons. 

zoro’s fight with ryuuma is fantastically cool, and i really like the level of respect and understanding that seems to exist between them. you have an ancient samurai and a modern samurai, separated by several hundred years, dueling it out to the best of their abilities- it’s really just awesome. 

usopp’s fight with perona is very different, because they’re both people who hate fighting directly and will avoid it whenever possible. their fight is a mess of diversions and distractions that makes usopp’s moments of courage and triumph, like sticking his hand into a bear’s mouth, not to mention his ultimate victory, all the more satisfying. 

i just really like seeing usopp grow and accomplish things!!

i’m aware there’s an argument to be made that the character we meet in this arc isn’t really ryuuma, because ryuuma is 1) dead and 2) possessed by brook’s shadow, but it isn’t going to stop me from saying ryuuma is awesome. 

the clouds of fire he’s frequently shown with are also gorgeous, and definitely evocative of the style oda will later use to draw wano, which is a very cool touch. 

everything about cindry makes me so, so sad. 

i’d also argue that the fact that she overcomes hogback’s conditioning by finally expressing emotion, first by crying and then by smiling, is the first manifestation of the same thread we’ll later see with koala and the slaves of the celestial dragons. one piece says over and over again that there is no point where someone stops being human, no matter how much agency they’re robbed of. 

i just think nami giving her attempted rapist several thousand volts to the face is very very sexy of her

like i mentioned, the crew against oars is such a HIGHLIGHT of this arc. i think it’s one of the only times we actually see the entire crew focused on a singular opponent (the only other case i can think of is the pacifista and then kuma at sabaody), and it’s just so much fun to see. 

i also appreciate that the strawhats carry the first half of this fight without needing luffy to be there. he might be their captain and the linchpin of the crew, but they’re still a crew when he’s not around, and still very capable of working together without him. 

this is just still one of my favorite gags.

continuing re: the team fight against oars, the final sequence where the entire crew coordinates for one final attack, some of them working to incapacitate oars and others to weaken him and other to position him just right for luffy’s final blow to paralyze him- that’s the GOOD SHIT.

i don’t know that there’s much i can say about zoro’s confrontation with kuma that hasn’t already been said, so all i’ll say is that zoro’s loyalty to luffy is absolutely staggering, and hits me in the chest every time i so much as think about it.

zoro has the second “luffy’s going to be pirate king” moment, i believe, after usopp in alabasta, and definitely one of the most memorable. 

there’s something about luffy on top of brook’s piano that always delights me. i think this is their dynamic in a picture: brook playing music, and luffy listening, and talking, and cheering him up. 

there’s something about the ending of thriller bark that really hits, in a way not really shared by other arcs. there’s a certain finality to it, a swan song. i think it was sarc opbackgrounds who pointed out that unlike most other character flashbacks, which come at the middle of the arc to add extra weight before the climax, brook’s comes at the end. the battle’s already finished, and now it’s time for him to close out the last fifty years and bid farewell to his old crew before setting sail for a new dream. 

it’s really nice. this is how the rumbar pirates get to go out: singing and dancing, after the battle’s already won, as their last survivor finally gets pick his hopes and dreams back up again and set out to sea once more.

it’s not a panel, really, but i feel like i have to include binks no sake in here. for one, it’s a really good song and sticks in my head like glue whenever i so much as see the lyrics. second of all, it’s the pin that holds this ending together, the shared point between the past and the present. the rumbar pirates sing it for their final performance and they sang it for laboon years before; brook sings it alone to himself on his ship, lost in the fog; and the strawhats celebrate and dance and sing it at the tops of their lungs.

i’m a sucker for a good musical throughline, but i think this is probably the first time i’ve ever seen it done well in a fucking text-based medium.

Well then, I guess my nickname can be Anime Anon BECAUSE SAME. Like it'/ hard keeping track of languages when you watch anime but listen to kpop at the same time =_= So wait, what's your current favourite anime? I just finished "Servamp" and i am SHOOK

and well actually, hm. i like manga a lot more because there usually tends to be a lot more plot development, etc. in it but uhh okay, I’ll just list some of my favorite manga that i know have become animes (though i may not have necessarily watched them all, lmfao asdfd):

deadman wonderland all the fucking way. holy shit. fave af. didn’t watch the anime, though, and don’t plan to since I can’t fare well with all that gore. b&w is a lot easier to deal with (though i can’t say i sit well with all of the graphic depictions of severed limbs, etc., but it’s a lot better when they’re not done in color). i love love love the characters, though not so much the lead (ganta); the side characters–i feel–are far more fascinating. i have no idea how far the anime goes but i really fucking loved the chapters that covered hummingbird/peacock/that old man (fuck i forgot his name)’s backstories ugasdhf and then i really (strangely) enjoyed the backstory of mockingbird and the final chapter was just a blessing. serious trigger warnings, though, if the title didn’t give much away already rip

orange is also really good and i only just recently found it that it became an anime. as in like, a few days ago. but i remember reading the manga and just asijfdkasdfids anticipating the updates and then the final chapter got me in dem feels :’) i love it. so much. it’s so refreshingly different from typical shoujo, too, and i love how they threw in the whole time travel thing in there which was like lowkey angsty the entire time but also it was like !! there is salvation!! (no that was not a spoiler but it is a source of stress and many tears). also, for anyone thinking of watching/reading this, gonna throw out (another) trigger warning out there.

soul eater is like lowkey my childhood bUT only lowkey though because i didn’t really start getting into it until like middle school LOL but then i got obsessed and watched the anime like 1239 times and then i was like oh hey manga is a thing! and i kinda read it, though it was confusing for me because the anime/manga splinter a bit so there isn’t exactly a clear, 100% cutoff from where the anime ends and the manga continues (i would explain more but then there would be spoilers). in any case, maka is literally queen as fuck and soul is such a slimy dork lmfAOOOASDF i love their dynamic for some reason so much??? but anyways the action anD THE WORLD HOL YSHIT I LOVE THE WORLD OF SOUL EATER like the dwma sounds like such a fucking cool place to study at, and the idea of some students being able to turn into weapons like ?!!?! sign me up

naruto because, like, dude, this shit’s a classic. i watched a lot of naruto when i was a kid, and then later on when i was super into anime i watched a lot of naruto shippuden (come to think of it, i don’t remember much of the original naruto. it was so long ago). i really liked the pain arc, it was so painfully feelsy and ughghasdfds and kakashi sensei and also i have not really caught up but i should because my fav character is gaara and i need to watch all the gaara episodes um but also highkey i have read the final two chapters and the first two chapters of boruto wow i love to spoil the stories for myself a lot a++ @ me lmfao (what am i saying help??)

gekkan shoujo to nozaki-kun becauSE LMFAO i relate to sakura bit too hard, and overall this shit is like, legit the funniest ever. there isn’t a lot of romance (or at least, not as much as one would expect from a shoujo) but the comedy factor makes up for it 1000000%. i love it. i don’t know what else to say but basically it’s kind of like a series of interrelated crackshots that revolve around a certain group of characters and it kind of fleshes out their relationships in the most hysterical way i lov it. i haven’t watched the anime yet, though, but i would love to sometime soon asjidf

durarara!! is love because in addition to being married to zoro, i am also in a committed (??!?!?) relationship with izaya because holy shit he’s such a little sly shit and i love him. i’ve watched about half the anime and read a bit of drrrr! and i love celty, simon is bae, and and and yeah i also don’t have much else to say about it. if you don’t know much about it, it’s basically about this (strange as fuck) city and these seemingly unrelated groups of people in it (ie the black Russian sushi dude who hands out flyers on the streets, high school students, an information broker, a headless motorcyclist) and how certain incidents connect them

mekakucity actors though it’s probably a bit hard to understand for people who didn’t know the vocaloid series it stemmed off from. but in any case, it’s kind of similar to durarara in which it’s basically how a group of seemingly unrelated people are connected to each other, but it’s more central in that rather than certain events, it’s just one, major danger and the fact that they all have a certain power to them. trigger warning on this one, though. it’s sad, agh, though the anime has a happier ending than the official ending for the vocaloid series (and probably the manga–i haven’t read it, so i don’t know). if you ever need someone to explain things to you, i got ya.

black rock shooter (the anime) is pretty good and it’s kind of different in that it does have a manga (several versions, in fact) but the anime has its very own storyline (and interpretation of the characters and their various relationships). there are even several oc’s introduced that are major players in the plot, and i found that really interesting (though i preferred one of the manga versions more, which is listed below). there’s actually no like… realistic depiction of blood (it’s like… blue) and i appreciate that, though some parts can come off as a bit… deranged. either way, i really enjoy these types of storylines haisf and brs is badass, i’ll tell you that.
