A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness - the way that book made my bawl my eyes in the end! The story is so good, the plot twist is plot twisting. And the illustrations in the book as so beautiful. I literally picked the book randomly like some time ago while I was on vacation from one of those travelling car bookstores and then it became one of my favourite books when I opened it to start reading.

The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier - I bought this book along with A Monster Call from the same travelling bookstore, it's also a rather nice read

White Crow by Marcus Sedgwick - this book is for the goth lesbians, no I will not elaborate. (I should really re-read it because it's been so long, but I really enjoyed it).

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark collected by Alvin Schwartz (the 3 books) - my favourite bedtime stories!

The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams - it's long, but I have no regrets reading it, it was so fun. And hey, I finally get the 42 reference, I saw it in That's Not My Neighbour!

A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami - my favourite book from the Rat series. And you don't have to read the rest of the books to understand and enjoy this one, but I would still recommend them too.

Medea by Euripides - I love unhinged women in literature. I wish I could have seen the play on stage. I don't care what my professor says, I will defend this woman until I die.

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka - would you still love me if I was a worm, but like put it in action, but I'm not a worm, I'm not a bug either, I don't know why you would even think I am a bug, I am a creature that can't even be depicted, also, my family fucking sucks! (did you you know that Kafka didn't want any images depicting any kind of bug on the cover of the story? Well, now you know. And look what happened, check the other covers for it. People can't even respect someone's wishes after his death smh). Also, shout out to his other story A Hunger Artist, my guy has been THROUGH it. But on a more serious note, I truly feel bad for Kafka, learning more about him during my Western Literature lectures by the end of the semester and reading a little from his letter to his father definitely put things into perspective.

Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola - now, I'm not a fan of the Realism and naturalism literary movements, I hate that sort of detachment from the text where the author just describes what happens in the story in a way that feels like they themselves are disinterested in the story that became sort of more trendy with time (it's why I hated The Stranger by Camus; not only was the story boring, but the way of storytelling was boring too. But that's from a different period of time, it's also different because it's told in first-person perspective, the way the sentences in the novella are formed is very intentional and do work well with the overall theme of The Stranger, it just makes a lot of sense for the main character in the story, so I do have to give Camus some credit for that. But anyway!). But I think even though in the preface he wrote that he will look at the story as some sort of experiment Émile Zola did a good job writing a story with an interesting concept in a way that's still interesting to read instead of turning it into a snooze fest (*cough* The Stranger *cough* The Trial *cough* Madame Bovary *cough*). I would have honestly loved a little more action at the end of of the story, but I still liked it, so it's fine.

okay firstly, goodmorning to me. woke up to chapter 2 and i can say my day is officially made !!

alright. hopper and bug. i absolutely can't wait for their dynamic and their relationship im sure you have a lot in store for them (im praying it be angst). they're just so father-daughter coded i LOVE them.

im like 95% sure you may switch the stobin bathroom scene to it being directed towards bug than steve or SOMETHING like that because im sensing jealousy from robin when stug were holding hands :3 robin & bug are absolute cuties though !

im so happy you try to include every dynamic possible with bug. that one little scene with the kids was hilarious and her interactions with will are just SO CUTE. (petition for you to include more will and bug scenes because i love love love them)

her being so kind to billy after what he did to her :( bug is a literal gem dude. GIMME SOME HURT/COMFORT DUDE WE NEED MORE ANGST !!!!!! (given there's already mild angst with stug (not really though) but some SERIOUS angst (praying it's there's in the future chapters))

as for her and steve. oh my GOD. SUCH IDIOTS ISTG. ESPECIALLY STEVE LIKE DUDE JUST ASK HER OUT ALREADY YALL ARE CUDDLING AND GIVING EACHOTHER NECK KISSES NO ONE IS MORE STUPIDER THAN YOU !!!!!!! like you won't imagine the number of times ive screamed to my stupid phone "JUST KISS ALREADY JESUS CHRIST" i can't believe this is gonna go on for the entire season, you really know how to make us lose it.

Ableism In Renfield

Renfield is probably one of my new favorite movies I won't lie. I'm absolutely obsessed with it! But that doesn't mean it's perfect and that I can't have some complaints.

There's two main points I want to bring up;

Demonization of NPD, and Erasure

Ok so obvious TW for Ableism and Sanism!

1. Demonization of NPD:

I'm sure if you've seen the movie you know they basically use "narcissist" as a synonym for abuser. They call Dracula (Robert's abuser) a narcissist and it's the general term used by the support group.

NPD and other Cluster B disorders are often used as synonyms for abusers. Take for example the Amber/Johnny trial. Idc who you think actually was the abuser. What matters for this conversation is that Amber's disorder was used as LEGAL EVIDENCE that she is an abuser.

There's also a rise online of a term called "narcissistic abuse". Now fucking imagine if someone said they suffered from say idk "autistic abuse". That's disgusting right? Everything that is claimed under narcissistic abuse fits under emotional abuse!

Also do you want to know one of the main ways NPD ends up manifesting? FROM ABUSE. So not only is the movie demonizing NPD ableist it's also just alienating it's own target audience. It's an abuse survivors story for fucks sake!

If you want to call an abuser selfish then be my guest. But don't pull a real mental disorder into it just because you wanted to seem like a big boy who knows big words. Selfish is a perfect word for an abuser!

2. Erasure

This one is specifically about the character of Renfield. If you've never read Dracula let me fill you in on Renfield's part of the story.

Renfield is a patient in Dr. Seward's asylum. He has psychosis and bouts of mania and depression, highs and lows. He has these symptoms BEFORE Dracula ever interacts with him! In fact his symptoms just make it easier for Dracula to use him. (Like real life abuse wow).

Now I understand giving Renfield Jonathan Harker's backstory (the soliciter role) in fear of ableism (ironic lol). Asylum in the victorian era was torture (hell it was even worse in the book). (Also I think it's a reference to the 1931 movie).

But they still should have kept his mental illness. There are absolutely zero signs of any psychosis in Robert.

(Random side note, I really liked that deleted dance number because it was all in his head, should have kept it smh).

Anyway; it would have been really cool to have a protagonist/hero who had some of the most stigmatized mental illnesses/symptoms out there.

And in not giving Robert any of his symptoms he just comes out, well not Renfield.

This is just the Jonathan Harker movie. Robert is a bit awkward of a person but that's about it.

Either way I still love this movie. As an abuse survivor who loves gothic horror and homosexual vampires it's fucking awesome. But these problems sure as hell bug me. (Bug get it?)

My love for Scarecrow started years ago with Injustice 2, I think. I liked playing him and I found his voice hot (still do). No memories of BTAS other than I know that I watched it as a kid so can't really say anything about that.

I think I like Jon because in many iterations he was bullied as a child for his looks and I can empathise with that because I was bullied for my weight. He's often a social outcast which I can kinda relate to because I've never felt like I belong, I don't understand people and trends and don't really even care. He doesn't give a shit about fashion and just buys books.

My problem with Jon being portrayed as handsome probably stems from these reasons. I feel like being an outcast is such an integral part of his backstory. I also find it charming how dressed as Scarecrow he has that power over people and then underneath the costume he's this dork.

I think that's it?? I'm on my way home and I can't wait to just collapse and sleep (hopefully).

OMGGG Just found out Robert Englund voices him in Injustice 2??? That's awesome and really fitting for the character aaaaa. I'd also recommend Jeffrey Combs' rendition of the character. He's VERY intimidating as Scarecrow in TNBA and really cute in Lego DC Supervillains.

Being an outcast is definitely a main aspect of the character, so it'd make sense if people looked him over due to his looks - even though he's actually really cute. It's their loss smh. Let Jonathan be a fucked up little hermit who likes messing with people's heads and scaring them out of their minds!!!... By dressing up in a Scarecrow costume. What a dork.

Oooo those are both good versions of him! Year One definitely leans toward conventionally handsome, but he can be fixed with time <3

one person replied to the first one to say we should do more, and that's good enough for me so here's the second! as a quick review, the idea is that we're asking each other questions about "vibes" to determine via process of elimination which cpds character the other is thinking of. again, we originally played this going back and forth, but i've reformatted it to be one character at a time so that you have the potential to play along :)

Yeah tired of the pic discourse after almost 7-8 years smh, but really, we should be upset with the Duffers for thinking that it would come off well. But if we're going to be upset abt that, then ppl should be equally upset about how pushy Steve is in the very first episode with Nancy. Neither guy is great to her at all and I wish ppl were nuanced and separated Joe's charisma from the equation. It's hypocritical, which I can't stand!

(Cont) To continue: it's why I hate the way the Duffers have handled this whole love triangle. At least it shaped the plot narratively in the first season, but what I can really see that's been a problem from the beginning here, and is especially egregious by season 4, is how badly it treats Nancy. Her point of view is not given the same importance (so they can drag it out of course!), but while Jonathan shouldn't have taken the pics, it wasn't Steve's place to decide abt the camera! That's the issue!

I’ve had so many asks on pictures discourse and not sure why or how there are people that say there has been no pics discourse or why it’s happening atm. Yes of course people forget everything Steve did in s1 when they talk abt it or think Jonathan had no character development after the pics, which he did. I get the idea it should have been Nancy’s call abt the pics and camera, but idt the camera being broken is a bad decision—like it makes sense to me his camera was broken and he learned how to not hide behind his camera and never broke boundaries like that again.

More recent Jonathan and camera discourse would be more interesting than rehashing all of this for the 50th time—like how Jonathan didn’t take a picture all of s4 and is totally out of touch with his dreams.

Oh boy. I remember before watching every LazyTown episode TO DATE, I'd always put this one off because it didn't really look interesting to me. After finishing all the episodes (and RE-finishing them which I'm 1/5 through), it's time to watch Ziggy's Alien again!

Recycled Zap It! opening. Durr. Robbie is trying to take a nap. SHOCKINGLY AS IF THIS HAS NEVER EVER HAPPENED IN THE PAST 33 EPISODES he gets disturbed. By the kids.

Sorry - I meant KID. As he is getting disturbed by the sound of Pixel trying to launch his alien communication plan. An excited Ziggy runs into his house, trips on NOTHING and his arm hits a button.

He ends up tangled in some wires and Pixel tells him only big kids inside (Ziggy is only two years younger then Pixel, SMH..) the house. So Pixel tells him to play outside, and he stuffs that up - Stingy is on a ladder, setting up an antenna when ZIGGY BUMPS INTO IT and he falls down.

Robbie's happy about this, until he starts yelling for help, much to his annoyance. Then Sportacus saves him, much to his anger. But it seems the ladder has fell on Stephanie and Ziggy.

Sportacus saves them too and asks what they were doing. They explain everything to him, say bye, and tell Ziggy that he can't join their club because he would crash the rocket. Stephanie feels bad, but Stingy is all for it. He says that if he saw an actual alien, he'd have a panic attack and not talk for a week. Robbie's listening.

Robbie has the idea to dress up as a space alien and scare Ziggy so he shuts up but for that plan to work REALLY well, it'd have to work forever, so he'd have to dress up as an alien once a week. He takes no notice of this and dresses up in an alien costume that looks NOTHING like an alien.

So, anyways, Ziggy starts the cake and candy club, but nobody will join because they're too busy singing Galaxy. So, Zobby (Robbie's alien costume) comes outside of his lair to find Ziggy and then he steps on a skateboard. Meanwhile, Stingy is questioning if the rocket is all his, and he says he can just own the bottom half but Steph declines. Pixel asks if they're ready through the walkie-talkie.

Stephanie tells him 'almost', much to his annoyance, which is a bit out of character because he'd be fine with it considering he crushes on her. Anyways, once Steph picks up something, Zobby comes cruisin' by and is out of her sight once she stands up.

She asks what that was, and Stingy tells her not to worry because it's probably his. If he owns a different life type, then, urhm, I'd worry.. Ziggy says that he would give away all his candy just for someone to hang out with. In comes Zobby whose skateboard hits a wall. He is sent front-flipping (yes, Robbie has done flips multiple times in this season!) with a hard landing.

Zobby introduces himself and Ziggy goes a bit crazy - but when Zobby tells him to be quiet, he becomes quiet. Ziggy offers him candy much to Zobby's liking until Ziggy calls him 'buddy', which is the opposite of what he was aiming for. So, Ziggy goes to his house, which is DROWNED IN CANDY.

He tries to find a good piece of candy for his new 'buddy', but he decides to give him his favourite lollipop ever, which is kind of sad, really. He's willing to give anything to anyone he meets so they can be friends with him when his real friends think he's too young to do stuff with them. So, for some reason, he decides to run up to his friends, but he bumps into the table and equipment falls off.

Stingy reminds him two things - he is TOO SMALL, and out of the club, but Ziggy offers to bring them a real life-size space alien (Zobby) and tells them to follow him. But he isn't there. He is trying to take a nap on a bench.

He sure took a nap, but not on the bench! So, the kids are looking for him, but they can't find him.. until he gets up from under the couch and shakes his head and starts talking about his pain, scaring Stephanie and Stingy.

Zobby's scared too, yelling 'KIIIDDDSSS!!!!'. then telling them to be quiet, and they are quiet. The kids find it a bit cool now, which starts a tug-of-war as to whose friend it is. Zobby yells out STOP and orders them to whisper every word. Then he starts napping. Ziggy says he must be tired of Earth and Stephanie comes up with the idea to bring him back HOME much to Ziggy's sadness.

Then he comes up with the idea to bring the alien home HIMSELF but Stingy keeps on saying he is too little and he'd crash, yada yada. He storms off, and Stingy says some people can be too possessive and STEPHANIE AGREES. Maybe it'd be funnier if the irony hit hard? Maybe Stingy could claim something a few seconds AFTER he said that. Sportacus' crystal beeps.

He rides into town. Meanwhile, the kids are literally just carrying Zobby in a wheelbarrow and they bump his head on the ice-cream stand, but he's too tired to wake up. Ziggy is sulking about how he isn't too young to fly a rocket and how Zobby's HIS friend. Sportacus flips over to his window and asks what's wrong.

Ziggy tells him everything and how he's too little but Sportacus says you're never too little to help someone out. Then he goes back to the ship. The kids are trying to figure out where to send Zobby as he said he was from 'Junkiter' and no planet exists. They decide to pick a pretty green one.

Pixel checks everything is where it's supposed to be, and he presses the red button, meaning that the rocket'll go in ten seconds. Stingy notices that Ziggy's in there. The 60 thousand KG worth of metal drops on the seesaw and they're launching.

Stingy is sad he will never see him again then asks for his candy. I get that was supposed to be funny but it isn't. Ziggy could be in potential danger. The rocket flies past Sportacus' airship and Sportacus sees them. Zobby's had enough and falls out of the rocket, holding onto a wing.

Then Sportacus JUMPS OUT THE SHIP and lands on the rocket. Ziggy asks Sportacus to save Zobby and he mishears it as 'Zombie'.. XD. So, he tries to walk to the back of the rocket but with the air and everything it's a bit hard. It's also hard because Zobby keeps missing Sportacus' hand. But he is pulled back in!

Then Sportacus sits on Zobby (you can tell by the 'ow!!' sound, XD)'s face, presumably. Sportacus tells Ziggy to ride the rocket, but Ziggy says he is too small. Sportacus reminds him what he said, and luckily, they make it back to LazyTown safely.

Sportacus tries to pull Zobby out, but instead he pulls out his helmet, and the disguise is of course, revealed, once again. And then he falls out of the rocket after aggressively grabbing the helmet back. LOLZ.

Ziggy is sad because he thought he had a friend. Stephanie says they're all his friends. Stingy agrees after a day of being a moron. Then Ziggy silently ends racism by saying 'Big, small or alien, we can all be friends!'. God, I love this show, such a heartwarming scene. The background music from Mani does it as well. They perform Bing Bang.

The episode ends with Robbie back in his robe, trying to relax, when a bright light shines above him, and someone calls out 'Take us to your leader'. Then he screams, abruptly cut off by the ending credits.

So simple, and so funny. It's the scream that's the cherry on top, really.

god yeah <3 sometimes i think about nancy wheeler so much that it's embarrassing. if someone infiltrated my mind half of it would be her !!

so true !!!! if anything, the gun is more of a physical, blatant reminder to the people around her that she's a quick thinker but knows how to defend the people she loves in the case that they can't think their way out of things. i think that if things had played out differently, if barb was killed in an ordinary way/went missing, and there was no upside down, nancy would still end up on the journalism career path, just without her guns

oh god yeah time travel and time travel adjacent things,,, that would be so cool. and terrifyingly traumatizing for all of them, but they could Definitely Go That Route. "when they defeat it and she's able to shower off all the dirt and grit and put on a newly pressed outfit and fix her makeup but even with that veneer of normalcy she can't pretend to be regular or really exist outside of a state of terror" GOD. YOUR MIND !!!! that's exactly what she's doing and it kills me to a) see that they hardly explore it in canon and b) note that the fandom is seriously lacking in nancy exploration deep dive psychoanalysis content. everything that you're saying,,, literally god tier. there was a line in a fic once that was talking about how some part of nancy feels like she's only of use when this supernatural danger comes knocking and. i can definitely see that playing out. nancy being untethered, trauma preventing her from moving on (for a while, preventing her from going out and actually getting anywhere in her relationship with steve, and eventually the stagnation builds up like a dam and everything she was trying so hard to ignore comes crashing down around her), and nancy completely surrendering herself to things. grades and partying and getting into her dream college and building a future with jonathan and interning at the post and becoming a journalist and whipping the school paper into pristine shape etc etc. point being ! the only time she feels alive anymore is when she lets herself be consumed by things and pulled along with the tide, and it's in no way healthy but. when she's making plans and knowing where everyone is, when she can plot out a course of action and know that everyone can work on the same wavelength as her, that's when she's most comfortable. it's a little backwards (a little upside down lmao). and you're so right, dw it does indeed make sense!! i would love to spend hours just,, observing nancy wheeler. picking her brain and whatnot

yes gun metaphor!!!! nancy doesnt just own guns she IS the gun!!!! i totally agree, nancy had an inquisitive quality from the start and i think her dedication to justice and curiosity are such core tenants of her. barb was maybe an inciting incident that brought them to the surface more quickly and to a higher intensity but they would've come up no matter what!!!!

what do you mean ronance isn't going canon???? LITERALLYYYYY yes everything so much. especially what you said about nancy literally losing her adolescence in every way that night. i think shared experience and "being in the know" is so pivotal to so much of stranger things but especially nancy. i know i'm just retreading everything but yeah she literally has no close friends at school or anywhere!!! even her family, even mike, who she knows understands at least a little bit, she can't talk to because he was never actually in the upside down and his best friend came back.

she's like a rubik's cube that is so impossible to solve and i love that about her!!! it's so real that she has contradictions and growth and isn't as perfect as she wants herself to be AHHHHH i love love love talking about her with you<33333

I tried to think of all the things that this season could bring, just from the crumbs that they left at the end of last episode, last season and they sure delivered. Clark gets a little pick me up from the tornado gust and starts to grasp that maybe he can fly.

He gains some other powers too, it's not really a spoiler (because he's Superman!) but get this, he gets heat vision from looking at his hot teacher...no joke! Speaking of, they're actually taking classes this season. But basically that means if he uses his heat vision, that means he's thinking of something horny? Wth 😂

I said about how Lex wasn't able to figure out how to be good because nobody let him but then he shoots Nixon in that first episode and Jonathan, the man who's despised him all last season says "Thank you." AFTER telling Clark that if he killed him himself, he wouldn't be setting a good example for him. Lex gets thanked for killing someone, being the first step to him trying to shape his behavior and his road to becoming evil. He absorbed the burden. Then mirror that of his own father who reprimands him for his actions. Smh. This man can't catch a break but they wrote him quite well.

They also changed every villain being caused by the meteor shower, some are just unexplained and some are more just issues that aren't necessarily villain related and push the connective tissue between the episodes more. But watching Young Justice made me realize something. I think I want to see Clark break down. I mean I know he's the symbol of hope and heck they even bring that up with him putting on a face but secretly dealing with these problems, but in some cases he can't seem to do much about it even with his powers but he still keeps a straight face.

I also want to see other people solve their own problems every now and then and get a chance to be the hero, like Jonathan with Martha. The only situation he gets to fix on his own is the kitchen sink. Pete gets a bigger role but I feel like we barely know anything about his actual character. And Chloe is just a douche now, I never really cared for her character in the first place though.

I also really enjoy the historical, philosophical and other references, it's almost poetic in a way, I still think about that Napoleon one from last season. There are also some episodes with pretty similar story beats which is a bit weird to see especially this early on in the show's life.

I like S2 a little more than S1 but I'm afraid I'm getting attached.

Part of the reason reviewers don't take note of anything Jonathan does is because none of the characters do either. No one calls him a genius nor does Joyce show any gratitude. When you see a scene like Robin calling Nancy a genius or Dustin always being right, Suzie being called a genius or other characters having moments of "you saved my life man" Its notable how Jonathan does not get these moments at all. He can't even get a story line where his own brother comes out to him but Steve gets Robin, a complete stranger, come out to him and the writing emphasizes how he keeps her secret.

Jonathan won't be noticed because the other characters aren't really even aloud to react to him.

Argyle just exists so he can move the plot of Jonathan pulling away from Nancy because they can't have him talk about his life, his future, his girlfriend with his own family for some reason. Notice how he doesn't even talk about the upside down, he has no curiosity about it or concerns until he's dragged by the plot into it.

Argh that's so true; no one really reacts to his presence or says things about Jonathan. I think the audience genuinely forgets how great of a big brother he is and how he's been in this parent role and how that's incredibly stressful and too much responsibility to be shouldered with. But I think the show purposely tries to make the audience forget by never highlighting him or having people really speak about him. Like he completely protects Will and Mike in that raid scene and the reviewer walked away with the impression Jonathan just abandoned the kids smh.

re: Argyle, idk if i agree he's purely plot driven--it makes sense for Jonathan to finally have a friend he can talk to. But they're only having Jonathan talk to him about his love life, not any of his other traumas/problems (although some fears about his parents do come out in that golfing scene). I don't think Argyle knows anything about El and her powers and the UD until "hero agent man" dies--it makes sense there he freaks out once he finds out what's going on and they're burying a body lol. I do agree though they really needed Jonathan to be allowed to speak more to his family (and a jancy convo will be necessary later). I still don't get why the show just hasn't cared about Jonathan as a character since s1. Giving him a friend was a good idea though, but not having the Byers interact in Cali was a bad one.
