Writing about it more in my diary but all three of my parents were the first or second generation to get out of like "half your siblings die of malnutrition and nobody can afford shoes" poverty and the Family Lore was people got out by being unusually clever & cunning & having exceptionally charming, smooth, code-switching social skills, & a lot of the shit that got projected onto me & ~done to me~ was anxiety that my very evident slowness/special-ed-level intellectual disability/poor social skills would result in a kind of backslide toward subsistence poverty because I wouldn't get into college or be able to hack it in the white-collar world. I couldn't for a long time and haven't but my life is fine. I wish they'd read Kropotkin and try to build relationships with other people. Idk

Nova Scotia here we come... first stop Vermont.
We woke up before the alarm, go figure. Maybe we were just a little excited, not looking forward to riding in the rain, but ready to get going! We were expected in Vermont about 12p, plenty of time! Breakfast…the most important meal of the day, as you may have heard! A quick breakfast including the perfect waffle, and then we’re off!  We rode through NY State, mostly on the highway, so we could…

North Pole is a sans serif display font. The main goal was to bring vintage feelings and uniqueness to the font by creating a similarity to a classical sans serif fonts & adding special alternative letters. The font is great for posters, logos, t-shirts & etc.

Owners of restaurants, bars, breweries and wineries will have more time to make outdoor seating areas permanent, allowing them to serve more people without disruption during the patio season.
Government is extending existing temporary expanded service area (TESA) authorizations one final time until Dec. 31, 2024. TESAs have enabled thousands of liquor-licensed businesses to create new or expanded outdoor seating spaces, such as patios and sampling areas, and give customers more space to gather.
“We know that many business owners who wanted to make their patios permanent have already done so,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “This final extension will help those who were unable to complete the process in time, without disrupting people who want to enjoy our world-class food and beverages as the patio season approaches.”

The mausoleum is hidden in the woods off a seasonal road not far from Beardslee Castle and "Beardslee Falls" in the East Canada Creek. It was built by Augustus Beardslee and stands on private land. The crypt and nearby area is rumored to be haunted. Unfortunately, many years ago the mausoleum was vandalized and some of the bodies inside were desecrated. The metal gates are gone and all that remains now is the stone structure. The contents were moved to a cemetery somewhere in the nearby City of Little Falls as far as I understand. It does not seem to be maintained in any way.
It is also one of the few remaining makers for a community that once existed in this area called "Beardslee's Mills" or "Beardslee's City."
From The Evening Telegram; Local, Saturday, September 2, 2000:
"It represents a bygone era when the Beardslee family lived on East Creek in Manheim and helped bring prosperity to the area. John Beardslee was the pioneer of the family to first settle East Creek. Born in 1759 in Sharon, Conn., he moved to the Mohawk Valley where he undertook many building projects including mills in the Utica-Whitestown area and a number of bridges in the Little Falls and Fort Plain area. He liked the area and in 1794 purchased a 100-acre tract on which he built a home and mills along the creek in the town of Manheim. A settlement grew up around his home called Beardslee's Mills or Beardslee's City. By 1800, the town consisted of two stores, two taverns, a blacksmith shop, nail factory, cooperage, a brewery, a sawmill and grist mill. When the Mohawk Turnpike and the Erie Canal came along, trade began to dwindle because of the lack of proximity to the two main thoroughfares and the village slowly declined. All that remains today is the old cemetery located near the Beardslee Mausoleum, hidden from view in the woods."

Imagine you turn up to the hospital looking for help because you feel dizzy and can't stop slurring your speech – only to be told that you're simply drunk. Yet, you haven't had a drop of alcohol. This recently happened to a woman in Canada, who experienced seven episodes of a mysterious illness that caused her to feel drunk even though she hadn't consumed any alcohol. It took two years before she finally received a diagnosis: she had "auto-brewery syndrome". Auto-brewery syndrome is a very rare and little understood condition where microbes in your gut start to make alcohol.

today is canada day, so here are some canadian things that i think the bau members would enjoy
hotch would love tim hortons. he wishes they had it in the states. he'd love going on a timmies run through the drive thru on the way to work. he'd love the ubiquity of tim hortons. not quite on every street corner, but pretty darn close. he would enjoy cheap, decently good coffee, and it would be so practical. his turn to bring snacks for jack's soccer tournament? box of timbits for the kids and one of those portable coffee things for the grown-ups. he doesn't know what to get someone as a gift for christmas/birthday/promotion at work? tims gift card
rossi would love canadian wines. obviously, he loves italian wine first and foremost, but he'd enjoy a good niagara region or okanagan valley wine. he'd love to go on a getaway to niagara-on-the-lake and spend the days doing winery tours, playing golf, and not answering his phone. i think he would also love roots. he'd never wear it outside the house, but he would love some good quality roots sweatpants, sweater, and wool socks
jj would love canadian snacks that aren't sold in the states. she always forgets to eat real meals when she's working, so she keeps one of the drawers of her desk stuffed with snacks. if she went to canada, she'd buy so many snacks to stock her desk with. ketchup chips, all dressed chips, coffee crisp, smarties (the canadian kind, not the american kind - we call those rockets), butter tarts, nanaimo bars. she'd find ketchup-flavoured cheetos at the store and buy so many bags of them. she'd totally get stopped at the border for accidentally trying to smuggle kinder surprise eggs into the us
emily would love québecois and northern ontario french. she learned french in france with parisian teachers, which is completely different from the way french is spoken in québec and northern ontario (which are also different from each other), both in terms of accent and vocabulary. i think she'd love trying to understand their accents and picking up new words (mostly things like tabarnak, câlice, etc)
in my mind, reid has a total sweet tooth, so i think he'd love all things maple. maple cookies, maple fudge, maple candies, maple lollipops. i forget what it's called in english, but his favourite thing would be tire d'érable. maple taffy? the thing where you pour hot maple syrup on snow and then put it on a popsicle stick and eat it. he'd have maple candies living in his pockets and at the bottom of his messenger bag for ages
derek would love small-town ontario craft breweries. obviously craft beer exists outside of canada, but literally every small town in ontario has a craft brewery or two. it's like a big thing. my dad's a beer guy and he takes detours driving places to stop at his favourite craft breweries or to go to a new one. i feel like derek's the kind of guy who enjoys cracking open a cold one after a long day of flipping houses, so he'd enjoy getting a two-four of different kinds of craft beer from a local brewery and stocking his fridge
i tried so hard to think of one thing penelope would love, but honestly i think she would love everything. she'd come back from a trip to canada with so many souvenirs. a roots toque, a bottle of real canadian maple syrup, several snacks that aren't sold in the states, handmade moccasins, a mug with indigenous artwork, and a little bobblehead moose dressed as a mountie for her desk

Norway says its moose statue is tallest. What a load of bull, Canada retorts. - The Washington Post
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2019/01/31/norway-says-its-moose-statue-is-tallest-what-load-bull-canada-retorts/
Not content to let Colbert, an admitted American, compare Mac to a “papier-mâché dog from an abandoned theme park,” Moosehead Breweries (no relation) is donating $25,000 Canadian dollars, or about $19,000, to the cause.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/mac-moose-tallest-moose-jaw-1.5314141
"I think he looks distinguished," Tourism Moose Jaw's executive director, Jacki L'Heureux-Mason, said Tuesday.

Don't worry, everything ended peacefully. (Ie. Canada won.)
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/moose-truce-twinning-cities-1.5046232
It has been agreed that Mac will reclaim the title as world's tallest moose with alterations that will be paid for with a $25,000 donation from Moosehead Breweries. Meanwhile, the four-year-old statue named Storelgen in Stor-Elvdal, will "forevermore be known as the shiniest and most attractive moose in the world."
Because, clearly, researching this moose conflict is the best use of my time.

The Great Stork Derby was a contest held from 1926 to 1936. Female residents of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, competed to produce the most babies in order to qualify for an unusual bequest in a will.[1]
The race was the product of a scheme by Charles Vance Millar (1853–1926), a Toronto lawyer, financier, and practical joker, who bequeathed the residue of his significant estate to the woman in Toronto who could produce the most children in the decade following his death.[2]
It is one of many unusual bequests in his will, along with giving a vacation home in Jamaica to a group of three men who detested each other under the condition that they live in the estate together indefinitely, brewery stocks to a group of prominent teetotal Protestant ministers if they participated in its operations and collected its dividends, and jockey club stocks to a group of anti-horse-racing advocates.

high infidelity | ten
It’s you and me, that’s my whole world. *Noah’s POV* Vancouver was so busy and you could feel the city buzzing with anticipation of the game tonight. We walked down the streets and they were flooded with jerseys and people were giving us high-fives as we walked by them. I knew hockey was huge in Canada but this was unreal, it was something I never experienced before. Ellie had told me this was their first game in the semifinals against Dallas tonight so it was like Christmas Day for the fans. Since downtown was so packed with fans we made the call to head back to the brewery we went to two nights ago which was a little farther away from the arena, but it wasn’t as busy as everywhere else. “I feel like I’m having deja vu.” Ellie looks up from her menu and smirks. I kept having flashbacks of when we were here two days ago. All I could think was how beautiful she looked that night and how her bright eyes dimmed the brightest neon lights in here. When the server came over we ordered the same beers we had last time along with two shots of tequila. I had to laugh that Ellie ordered them considering she deeply regretted her shots from the night before. I wasn’t one to say no. I watched her as she skimmed over the menu more, clearly this was a big decision for her but I couldn’t stop myself from watching her. Her lips weren’t red this time but they were the perfect shade of pink and glossed over…all I wanted to do was kiss her and never stop.
“Choosing food is serious business for you huh?” I asked her as I bit my lip, she looked up and made me blush. Before she could say anything our drinks arrived, I told the server we needed more time with the menu so he dropped the drinks off and left. We clinked our glasses together and took our shots with no chaser. “I’m super picky sometimes, sorry.” She replies as her lips pursed, “we could just do appies and if we get hungry later we can eat at the game. Do you like spinach dip?” “Now you’re talking my language.” I said with a huge smile on my face, and she mirrored it. The server came back over and we ordered spinach dip, hot wings and onion rings and two more shots of tequila. If my personal trainer could see what I was doing right now he’d probably kill me. Over the last year I had been taking better care of my body but I figured I had a night of serious drinking ahead of me so I disregarded the amount of grease I was about to consume. I reached over and grabbed Ellie’s hand, she looked like she was on another planet. “What are you thinking about, El?” “This is gonna be really cheesy but…” She cleared her throat and sat a little straighter in her chair. Her gaze dropped and she traced around the mandala on my hand. “I don’t know if it’s the tequila talking but I can’t believe that I’m here with you and how easy you’ve made everything.” “Ellie, I’m really happy to be back here with you too. I don’t know what you want to call it between us but this has been the most normal I’ve felt with someone. I feel like you see me for who I am.” I said as I took a sip of my beer, not realizing the weight behind what I just said. “I mean, sometimes I look at you and think, holy shit I’m with Noah from Bad Omens, but 99% of the time I know I’m with you, just Noah.” She pauses as our food comes, “I hope you know that.” “I do.” I replied happily as I reached for our shots I never noticed arrived. I passed her her shot and we took them simultaneously, not breaking our eye contact as we set the glasses down. We ate our food and lightened the conversation with hockey talk. Ellie told me the basics and it was cute to see how much she knew about this sport. She told me she played up until she was 18 but stopped playing professionally after she had a serious concussion. She even joked about getting me on a pair of skates but no one needs to see that. After we finished our drinks and food Ellie settled the bill, even though I wanted to pay I let her have this one. With our band having more success I was getting more financially stable, so it was hard to hold back my impulse to pay for everything. All I wanted to do was spoil her because she deserves the world. “Is this really your first NHL game?” Ellie asked me as we waited in line at the arena to grab more beers. “Yeah, I’ve only been to NFL games…and that’s because Folio dragged us.” I replied as my eyes wondered around. The arena was full of fans and I had a slight wave of anxiety thanks to the pandemic keeping me away from huge events like this. “Well.” She says, causing me to snap out of my thoughts, “you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into. Hockey is way better than football.” My body started to get used to the huge crowd and I calmed down quickly with the help of Ellie holding my hand. It made me smirk seeing how excited all of this made her and how at home she looked here. We were 13 rows up from the ice and all I could think about was how much she paid for these seats. I snapped a few photos to show the guys what I was up to and my group chat blew up. Folio was so happy to see me showing an interest in sports and everyone else asked if I was lost. Matt and Jolly asked me where Ellie was so we took a selfie and sent it to them, causing the chat to blow up again. I couldn’t stop staring at the photo of us, considering it was our first selfie together. I had to admit, we looked good together. I put my phone on do not disturb as the game started. I had no idea what I was about to witness.

Kuma no ie House Aesthetic
— Kotan Anchikar
Tumblr media
Kotan lives in the largest house in his tribe's village. After his father died, he inherited all the perks of being the chief, including his father's household, which he lived in since he was born. He, at first, wanted to move into a much smaller house, not the least because he wanted to live like his fellow tribespeople, but because there's so much room in his current house that he doesn't know what to do with all of it.

— Ted Bridges & Kokomi Morozov

Ted lives in a large chalet in the mountains of Hakodate, where he lives with his son and fellow teammate, Kokomi, who rents a room from him. After he left Okinawa after his wife passed, he decided to flee somewhere to Japan that resembled his native home of Canada, which is known for its cold. To that end, he chose Hakodate in Hokkaido and built himself a chalet for him and his son. Although he comes off as a recluse, thanks to his hard work in maintaining the woods of his city (as well as his famous homemade brew), he is counted as one of Hakodate's most prized residents.

Epithet Erased Prohibition AU: Intro Post
It is the early 1920s in the United States of America. The Prohibition is in full effect, and the criminal world has turned to alcohol as their primary trade. In the developing concrete labyrinth of one Sweet Jazz City, one cider brewery quickly starts to take over the streets, at its helm a small, loyal, and wildly eccentric up-and-coming crime family.
The Story
This AU is set in the United States of America, Earth, roughly during the early 1920s. The story has no connection to that of the series canon and will not follow its events.
The City
Situated on top of the US-Canada border, Sweet Jazz City didn't quite exist so much until Naven Nuknuk came along. Through industrial cunning, political puppeteering, and a minor civil war which culminated in the FBI's erasure of all data on Sweet Jazz, the small city has become a major logistics and transportation hub for a...certain kind of industry. Few outsiders to Sweet Jazz City have even heard of the seemingly unremarkable place, and even fewer know of the rather unsavoury business that bought it prosperity.
The Family
Less of a conventionally structured crime family and more a large web of friendships and favours cunningly spun into Naven's own mafia hierarchy, Bliss Ocean has a reputation in the world of organised crime for its eccentric membership, immigrant-friendly posture and tendencies of violent action against supremacist incursion. It is through this haphazard collection of miscreants, streetwise crooks, and professional killers that Naven distributes his product across the civilisation surrounding Sweet Jazz.
