“Why did you choose photography???”

As a young teen, I had become very attentive to the photography world. I had not only seen my own Nana in action with a camera, but I had seen the photos that others had taken. When I was old enough, I was gifted with a very camera of my own. A little Canon Powershot SX160 IS. Now, as a starting camera, this little baby was fantastic! It was HD and had 16x optical zoom as well as 16 megapixels! I was very grateful for this little bad boy. 

Years later, I had focused more on school and it was slightly sitting there collecting dust. After I had graduated High School, I had realized that maybe I could still use it. I was right actually. Later on in life, I had bought my first camera of my own! It was a Nikon Coolpix B500. Now, this was an upgrade to the tiny canon, but it was still a beginning camera. It took some fantastic shots, but my hunger for photography grew. 

Early this year in 2019, I had bought a Nikon D3500. I adore this baby as well as my previous two, but the question still lingered. Why did I choose photography? I had answered the right questions with the wrong answers before and I personally feel embarrassed about it. 

So I have sat here the past few months just pondering on why I chose photography instead of my other passions? 

Well, I believe it is quite simple.

The world must be seen through many views. This world is beautiful, yet we continue to pollute and trash it. You see, what I failed to realize is that a photographer is a reporter, but it’s using photos. Every photo can have meaning. We sometimes fail to realize that stories are told through photos. We fail to acknowledge the true meaning behind one simple photo. 

It was until recently that I had realized my own purpose through photography. It’s to show that there is more to life than sitting on your ass or being glued to your phone and taking selfies. It’s probably why I suck at portraits, but I see the Earth in all her glory. I still enjoy just sitting outside and being at peace. Why haven’t we helped her? I haven’t had the simplest idea, but we need to. Why did I choose photography? I had chosen it because my story has yet to be told.
