I’ve just learned of this playlists existence today in that ask. My reply was my first thoughts upon seeing those songs. However you are correct, I had forgotten he’s mention “lost without you” in that song about his ex looong before him and Megan were together. Pretend it’s about 2014 or 2015. Pharrell’s “Happy” is inescapable, and every background song in a YouTube video sounds like a variation of "Fantasy” by Alina Baraz.

You are a young teenager of color who uses Tumblr, that one social media site that isn’t Instagram or Twitter. As you scroll through your dashboard of Lana Del Rey screenshots, greyscale images of skinny white girls in thigh high socks, and other relatable depression memes, you come across something out-of-the-ordinary: a selfie superimposed against classical art works (Sargent 2015). You click on the username of the original poster and see the hashtag #arthoe, two simple words that will lead you down a rabbit hole of self-love, artistic expression, and shameless diversity.

Welcome to VENUSSTADT, a channel devoted to discussing gender equality and women in the realm of arts and culture. Today, I am covering the Art Hoe movement—not the fad internet aesthetic, but the substantial social media-based movement that focused on uplifting marginalized groups in traditional art spaces.

BACKGROUND

To understand why the Art Hoe movement was a big deal at the time, you need to know a bit about art and social media history, especially that of Tumblr.com.

What is and what isn’t art has always subjective. People of color, at least within the context of the Western art canon, have had their creations routinely excluded as “art” by a subjectivity rooted in white supremacy; likewise, white women or poor white people have been excluded due to misogyny or classism. Those works by people of color that were regarded as art were often stripped from their regions of origins due to violence.

As for Tumblr, the website pre-2014 was known as a hub for alternative communities (*think hipsters and rehashed grunge) and a space for significant fandom exchange, both of which focused heavily on whiteness. This was a bit ironic, considering Tumblr users were more likely to be of Black or Latine origin (Calhoun 49).

One center of diversity in Tumblr’s white sea was Black Tumblr—which was just as it sounds, black Tumblr users. Black Tumblr was arguably an important stepstone in the development of online activism into what we now know it as, and on that platform black Tumblr users were participating in what sociocultural linguist Kendra Calhoun calls “everyday activism,” or “the sharing of personal stories [and perspectives] in public spaces with the aim of challenging the status quo through ‘erosive social change’” (Calhoun 50). Calhoun specifically acknowledges that Black Tumblr accomplished everyday activism by challenging negative ideas about and promoting positive representations of black people (Calhoun 48). It’s against this social justice-based backdrop that the Art Hoe movement would first emerge.

#ARTHOE

The movement was started by Tumblr users Mars and Jam. Mars, who is genderfluid, was notably about 15 at the time. The term “art hoe,” had been coined by rapper Babeo Baggins in the caption of a viral Tumblr selfie (2jam4u 2015). Sometime later, Mars created the Art Hoe movement’s iconic selfie style. Jam saw the selfie, approached them, and the two discussed how selfies could be used to change public perceptions and, according to Jam, “create a possible outlet to shatter gender, class, and race ceilings” by reclaiming and promoting one’s own image (2jam4u 2015). The term “art hoe” matched this perfectly, in that it was a reclamation of the AAVE term for “whore,” which Jam said was “used a pernicious tactic to diminish the worth of women, especially black women” (Strehkle 2015).

“[People of color] and specifically black women have historically been excluded from the art world or simply used as hyper-sexual muses whether it be in music, paintings, photographs, etc.” Jam told Buzzfeed in 2015 (2jam4u 2015). “I think right now, with this movement, we’ve spoken up and said, ‘I have autonomy over my representation and I’m going to use that to shine a light on how [people of color] have been excluded or made into tropes in art as a whole.’”

Thus, “art hoe” became a hashtag where fellow Tumblr users—specifically women and gender nonconforming people of color—were encouraged to share selfies, art, and other multimedia materials. With this hashtag, these users carved out a space for themselves both in the art realm and on a social media platform where they were overlooked. In short, it became a movement to uplift black and brown queer artists. Mars’ goal for the movement was for it to be a revolution of “social awareness and self-confidence” (2jam4u 2015), while Jam’s was for it to become a “representation of self-love/acceptance” (2jam4u 2015).

The movement, as Nell Frizell hints at in a 2015 Guardian article, was a mix of the academic and the adolescent. Participating users discussed how institutionalized racism, sexism, and homophobia affected their lives as teenagers—aka, Calhoun’s “everyday activism” (Calhoun 2020).

The art hoe tag hosted original works such as paintings, drawing, poetry, and photography. But the calling card of the Art Hoe was definitely the selfie, which usually included drawings or magic wand cut outs of the subject against paintings by Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and others. These selfies functioned as a way to “raise questions about the historical representation of people of color in art” (Sargent 2015).

This might seem frivolous today since selfies have become an accepted part of the social media landscape, but back in the early 10s it was maligned as the height of millennial self-obsession. Though selfies were technically a form of photography, it seemed like its sheer accessibility disqualified it as art. The perceived vanity of the selfie was often pinned on young women, as explained by S.E. Smith in a 2015 Guardian article (Smith 2015):

“It’s telling that because the selfie is often such a female endeavor, it’s treated as a lesser art form. Women taking pictures of themselves are vapid, vain, and ridiculous. Women documenting their own lives aren’t contributing anything valuable to the larger world of art. And those who read as women and treated as women are gathered under that umbrella too—we’re not supposed to talk about our lives and express our nature, because don’t we know we’re boring and no one cares?”

Against a milieu of the anti-selfie, these artistic selfies functioned as a way for self-proclaimed art hoes to express themselves amid a culture that treated them as laughing stocks.

CO-OPTATION

As you can observe, the art hoe movement served as an inclusive community with no entry fee. Just post a selfie or share your artwork in the tag, and you were a part of a community that embraced self-love, diversity, and creativity.

Unfortunately, this easy entry made the movement ripe for co-optation. As the art hoe hashtag became more well-known across the platform, white Tumblr users started to use the tag as well. This wasn’t bad in and of itself; however, thanks to the tendency to strip movements down to their basic, commodifiable parts, as well as the way info floats across the internet without proper sources, the Art Hoe tag soon became known for white and light-skinned thin women in quirky sweaters with trendy backpacks. This is the “art hoe aesthetic” you see now when you go on Pinterest or Google the movement.

Scholar Maria Stratigaki defines co-optation as the process by which “the concept itself is not rejected, but its initial meaning is transformed and used…for a different purpose than the original one” (de Jong and Kimm 2017, 187).

Speaking from a feminist point of view, Sara de Jong and Susanne Kimm point out how certain activist principles are co-opted into problematic structures to the dismay of the activists themselves: “Feminist scholars who are often simultaneously advocates and activists in particular fields…witness with dismay how what they have lauded as achievements of their struggles are transformed into an ‘uncanny double that [they] can neither simply embrace nor wholly disavow’” (de Jong and Kimm 2017, 186).

I’m sure you have also witness co-optation before, whether it be the feminist movement, #BlackLivesMatter’s shift from grassroots movement to non-profit organization misappropriating funds, or how terms like “woke” and “cancel” were stolen from Black folks on the internet.

In this case, these white Tumblr users took over the “art hoe” label for a quick aesthetic fix before moving on to the next new thing, erasing the movement’s original context in the process. Though the Art Hoe movement’s co-optation wasn’t as grand as the previous three examples, it was still disappointing, especially for a website that prided itself on how progressive it was compared to other platforms.

As one can imagine, the original art hoe participants were not at all happy about their tag being spammed with these irrelevant, consumerist images of white women. But any attempts to speak out against this were often met with the racist handwaving they had been fighting against in the first place.

“People tried to use the ‘angry black person’ stereotype when I called them out on it, telling me it wasn’t a big deal. But it felt like a big deal. People of color are often denied artistic ability, or the things we birth to the world are stolen by white counterparts. I never intended Art Hoe to be the way” (Frizell 2015).

ART HOE COLLECTIVE

To re-reclaim the Art Hoe label and distance themselves from the watered-down aesthetic, the movement shifted from a simple hashtag to an Instagram account. The Art Hoe Collective was born. The collective maintained the same goals as the original hashtag, except now the collective took submissions via email (Galore Girl 2017). The result was a more streamlined, centralized internet movement.

As the Collective grew, so did its recognitions and ambitions. It received press from multiple established news sources, such as Teen Vogue, Huffington Post and Vice, and came third in Dazed100 Artists list in 2016. The group even attracted celebrities Amandla Stenberg and Willow Smith into their fold (Frizzell 2015; Strehlke 2015).

By March 2016, the collective had hosted two in-person meetups in New York City and D.C., with plans to host more (Chiu 2016). Curators also expressed a desire to have a physical venue akin to New York’s Teen Art Salon, where members could create art together (Chiu 2016). By 2018, there had been meetups at festivals like Art Basel and Afropunk, and professional development panels and workshops (Dix 2018). They also offered microgrants for artists in needed funding in 2020.

And that is where the basic history of the Art Hoe movement seems to end. The collective’s Tumblr and Twitter pages ceased operation in 2016, and the latest post on the Instagram page was created April 6, 2021. The Instagram page was also deleted in August for reasons I will get to later.

LEGACY

Despite being obscured by the so-called art hoe aesthetic due to people attempting to overcorrect and credit the Kanken backpack craze to Mars, the Art Hoe Collective’s artistic and digital legacy is amazing. Ultimately, the movement gave many marginalized people a platform for self-acceptance and creativity, just as its founders intended.

The collective was many artists’ first foray into the world of art and curation, as mentioned by academic Ashleigh G. Wade (Wade 2021). Aside from bypassing the gatekeeping of traditional art spaces, the Collective “made it easier for artists to encourage and support each other while potentially building professional networks outside the confines of formal cultural institutions” (Wade 2021, 26). In sum, the Art Hoe Collective provided invaluable artistic experience for the young people of color it took into its fold.

The Art Hoe Movement, of course, also had the unintentional effect of spawning the co-opted “art hoe” aesthetic, which would later be rehashed as the VSCO girl, which I view as one of the first major modern internet aesthetics. From there we would get things like Plant Mom and Cottagecore, which would spawn several other aesthetics ending in -core, but that’s honestly an entire article or video topic in and of itself.

If you’re familiar with Black artists online or just up on your Internet history, you might already recognize many of the people who used to be involved with the Art Hoe Collective. For example, through their work as curator for Art Hoe Collective, Brooklyn artist Sage Adams (@sageaflocka) became a creative director for notorious former Tumblr girl SZA (Dwyer 2019). Fellow curator Jheyda McGarrell (@jheydamc) founded the Black Image Center, which provides resources like equipment and mentorship to Black photographers (Gevinson 2020). Other people formerly associated with the Art Hoe Movement and Collective include model Aaron Phillips (Pauly 2020), model Gabrielle Richardson (Dix 2018), and designer Rian Phin (Frizzell 2015).

As for the founders, Jam’s last Tumblr post was in March 2022, but they are still active on TikTok making videos about their experiences with autism. Mars in 2021 photographed SZA and had their worked featured in Baltimore’s Waller Gallery for a showcase highlighted queer Haitian artists in September of that same year. They continue to post their photography on Instagram (@mtrainhottie).

As I was researching and writing the script for this video, some new info emerged about the collective’s later years from Mars on their Instagram account. Because this new info is super sensitive and complex, I’m choosing not to cover it in this video, especially since I was unable to get into contact with those involved. Mars’ IG post is linked in the description of this video, and if you search “art hoe movement” or “art hoe collective” on Twitter, I’m sure you can still find commentary on the relevant info.

An unfortunate casualty of this new situation has been the Art Hoe Collective’s official Instagram page, which was deleted between August 10 and August 21. I have also not received a response from the Art Hoe Collective’s email account as to why this decision was made.

This situation aside, the Art Hoe Collective ultimately did have a profound effect on social media, especially young black and brown artistic teens, during its heyday. It helped young people share their artwork and have their experiences platformed at a time where marginalized people were ignored on the internet. To me, it’s rather unfortunately that the whole thing ended the way it did and that, for whatever reason, the decision was made to delete the IG account entirely, since it was one of very few reliable resources to learn about the collective.

I feel that after Folklore and Evermore, Midnights was a little bit revert back to pop and I honestly wanted more quill songs from Taylor Swift because those sound like they're stripped off from Shakespeare plays.

I was right about Labyrinth. It's one of the few songs from the album that I instantly liked on the first listen. I think I need to listen to the whole album to make it grow on me. I was also disappointed that Lana Del Rey did not have any verse whatsoever on Snow on the Beach. It felt like a wasted opportunity...

And then I heard the 3am Edition and I liked more songs from there but especially this song in particular:

I was working when I was listening to this track and had to rewind a little bit because I heard a lyric — nay a very specific date, that is highly unlikely for Taylor Swift to know about me. 😂

The refrain lyrics goes like this:

Dom is a late-in-life Swiftie. He’s always been an admirer of Taylor Swift but didn’t become a pathological fan until the Reputation Era. 

Hannah is an early adopter. She’s been on board since the debut album. 

Dom and Hannah have a lot in common (they love crystals, they love each other, and they love their friend David). They also have a lot of differences (Hannah doesn’t like Lavender Haze, and Dom thinks she’s foolish and [redacted] for not liking Lavender Haze. 

They hashed out their differences (below) and tried to find some common ground. It went okay! But they still have work to do. 

Lavender Haze

Hannah: This song gives off 80s synth pop vibes, which usually I’d be here for, but I’m not a big fan. The lyrics are catchy, and I find myself singing along when I listen to the song, but it’s not a song I’ll go out of my way to play, especially when a song like Maroon follows up behind it.

Dom: I’m baffled that this isn’t in your Top 5, Hannah! This is one of my favorite songs of 2022. I love the theme of the song--finding an oasis in someone when life gets fuggin stressful. It’s equal parts a love ballad and a song about burnout. Relatable as fluck. And the bridge. Get it off my desk!!! It’s good.

Maroon

Hannah: This song sits at number 3 for me for the album. It gives me Red album vibes, and that was one of my favorite Swift eras. The way she sings about a failed relationship but makes it something beautiful is just the epitome of Taylor Swift. “And I wake with your memory over me. That’s a real fuckin’ legacy to leave.” The chills I get when I hear this line. It makes me reminisce on my past relationships and smile at what they brought to my life, no matter how dark they ended.

Dom: Lyrically, this is an S-Tier song. So good. Storytelling at its finest. Musically, it’s not as seamless as a fit for me. It feels a little dated (reminds me of 2014 for some reason). But I can get past that. The lyrics are wonderful. And the hook is friggin catchy.

Anti-Hero 

Hannah: Everything about this song is a “yes.” The lyrics, the tune, the theme. We’re all the problem at some point in our life, so it’s immensely relatable, and this is the shining star of the album. “When my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people I’ve ghosted stand there in the room.” A lot of us fight with some form of mental illness, and I think this is an anthem for us. And let’s talk about the snake hiss she heavily leans in on in the post-chorus…what a shout-out to all of the tabloids calling her a snake.

Dom: So freaking good. Basically, every lyric functions as a standalone one-liner (Instagram Caption, tattoo, email signature). But at that the same time, it’s so cohesive. It feels like it fits so perfectly in the album, the era, and my literal LIFE. So good. I want to give it a #1 ranking, but there are some other songs that literally broke my bones. So I’m going to give her a #5.

Snow On the Beach (Ft. Lana Del Rey)

Hannah: Y’all are going to hate me for this one. Where’s Lana? There seems to be a trend where female guest artists on Taylor’s albums don’t get their own time to shine as a male artist does. Perfect examples would be No Body, No Crime and Breathe, where HAIM and Colbie Calliet are simply an accent to the song. Then you have songs like Everything Has Changed or Exile, where Ed Sheeran and Bon Ivor have their own moment. The song is beautiful, I just wish I would have heard more from Lana. This leaves this song in the middle of the pack for me. It’s not bad but it’s not amazing.

Dom: Yeah, Hannah, I do hate you for this! I know Taylor gets a lot of flack for giving boring-ass men full verses (Gary Lightbody had a verse but HAIM got background vocals???). But in this case, I think Lana’s and Taylor’s voices literally mesh into one eerie and melancholy, and beautiful voice. And it makes me feel better that they wrote it together. I will say I think this song would’ve worked well as a Lana solo track, but I’m not sure Taylor could’ve pulled it off by herself. I love this song so much. The sentiment. The serendipity.

You're On Your Own, Kid 

Hannah: You’re On Your Own, Kid is one of those songs that I think can have various meanings. When I sat and listened to it for the first time at 12am, I was brought to tears. It reminded me of my constant feeling of loneliness. For this reason, YOYOK solidifies its spot at number 2 for me with this album.

Dom: Famously—and traditionally—Taylor reserves Track 5 on each album for the most gut-wrenching or emotionally vulnerable song. On Folkore, we’ve got My Tears Richochet. On Red, we’ve got All Too Well. I was surprised to see YOYOK as Track 5. It’s a great song—like every song on this album. And I agree with Hannah about the themes… this is the definitive anthem for loneliness. Closely followed by Akon’s Mr. Lonely. BUT, I have high expectations for Track 5. And with songs like Would’ve, Should’ve, Could’ve and Bigger Than the Whole Sky on the album, I’m a little (ONLY A LITTLE) underwhelmed.

Hannah: I’m gonna love any song that’s about Tom Hiddleston. It’s guaranteed. Getaway Car? Art. Midnight Rain, it’s little sister. There’s something so beautiful about TS realizing she did someone dirty and owning up to the mistakes. “He wanted a bride. I was making my own name.” We’ve all had those moments of being in a situation that we know better than to be in. I’d rank this one higher up in the middle of the songs.

I've been the prey”), Getaway Car (“I left you in a motel bar.”), and Back to December (“This is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night.”) The latest rendition of “I Broke the Heart of a Nice Young Man” is good! But not my favorite.

I wrote it in my Enneagram/Midnights analysis and dubbed this as a song for Enneagram Nines (folks who strive to maintain peace and have trouble saying what they want). Relatable as fluck. Also, I love cute little sound effects in songs. I get a cute little serotonin boost when the crowd yells after Taylor kisses her twin flame in the bar. This is a cute little song that I cute little like.

Hannah: It’s like Reputation Vol. 2, but the initial bad bitch feeling is gone? That opening line, though…”Draw the cat eye sharp enough to kill a man”…absolute chills. There’s no denying Miss Swift is brilliant when it comes to her lyrics, this song just didn’t hit like I wish it would have.

Hannah: Bejeweled is a track that didn’t click with me during the initial listening of the Midnights. But as I listened to the album over and over again, I tolerate it now. It’s not in my top songs by any means, but I wouldn’t skip it if the album was on shuffle.

Hannah: People who don’t rank Labyrinth high, and I’m just gonna say it, have absolutely no taste. Karma 

Hannah: This is “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” chiller little sister. I will say I love the chorus here, emphasizing all of her GOOD karma that many of the news outlets didn’t think she would have, as they constantly criticized her. This is supported in the following lyrics. “Ask me what I learned from all those years. Ask me what I earned from all those tears. Ask me why so many fade, but I’m still here.” The most polite way to tell people to STFU if you ask me.

Sweet Nothing 

Hannah: I personally love a good love song about Mr. William Bowery, AKA, Joe Alwyn. It has a sweet little nursery rhyme vibe which I think is super cute, because nursery rhymes tend to help children relax, calm down, and sleep, so it’s adorable that she’s comparing her relationship with Alwyn to this sort of nostalgic comfort we all experienced as a child.

Hannah: Mastermind wasn’t one of my favorites when I first sat down, but it grew on me in a way that I didn’t think was possible. As I sat and actually soaked in the lyrics I was SHOOK. Like, are you kidding? Let’s talk about the bridge. “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since to make them love me and make it seem effortless.” Listen Taylor, if you wanted to hurt me, you could have just stabbed me instead. Holy cow this song is magic.

The Great War

Hannah: The Great War is one of Taylor’s best songs she’s ever written. Between the snare drum that was used in actual battles, and the story she sings about the battles you face with relationships, ah, it gives me actual chills. The bridge is my favorite part of this song because she really lays into emphasizing the snare drum and dials back on the use of other instruments and it really makes you feel like you’re going through the battle she’s singing about.

Bigger Than The Whole Sky

Hannah: This song makes me ache in my bones. It’s that one relationship that was so perfect for you, but it wasn’t perfect in the other person’s eyes so they leave. That loss is absolutely KILLER and I think Swift is able to capture that pretty perfectly when she describes that this person in her life was “bigger than the whole sky,” essentially implying this person was their world, and now she has to go through and figure out how to live without the person she thought was the end game for her. It’s immensely relatable. I’ve ranked it low on the list only because there are other songs that I reach for first.

Hannah: Paris is a difficult one for me to figure out how I feel about it. It’s not really relatable for me, so I think that’s what makes it hard for me to connect to the song. The beat is fun and the flow of her lyrics naturally puts a smile on your face while you listen, but this one…it’s gonna be last for me.

High Infidelity

Hannah: I mean, this one is fine. But there are stronger tracks that I like. “You know there are many different ways that you can kill the one you love…the slowest way is never loving them enough”...OOF. Those lyrics though. An absolute stab to the heart. But I feel like I would have liked it more if it was paired with a different music track. There’s just something about the tune that makes me go “Ehh.”

Dom: I can’t help but compare this song to Illicit Affairs from Folklore, since they both explore varying levels of infidelity. Illicit Affairs is an incredible and complicated song. High Infidelity song is fine! I maintain there are no skips on this album. And I’m sure this song will rise in the ranks after I’ve overplayed Vigilante Shit in a few weeks.

Hannah: I really like the relaxing vibes to this song but that’s about it if I’m being honest. Like, I’d listen to this song as I sit beachside soaking in some Vitamin D. This is a song I don’t listen to for the lyrics, because I think she has some songs with stronger lyrics, but this song gets the job done for what I need it to do.

Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve

Hannah: Dear John Mayer, you sir, are the gunk on the bottom of my shoe. Need I say more? Probably not, but I’m going to. Instead of focusing on the lyrics, as tragically deep as Demi Lovato’s “29”, I wanna focus on some of her vocal choices on certain lines and words, example - when she sings “Give me back my girlhood”. I’ll wait while you go listen to that part…did you go listen to it? Did you hear the slight teeny bopper whine she adds to it, almost signifying that she was only a young teenager. It’s brilliant. There’s a desperate plea to her voice in this whole song as well, which really tugs at my heart strings and wants me to form Dallas’s chapter for the John Mayer hate club. It’s ranked a little lower only because I can’t put it past Dear John. That remains a classic.

Dear Reader

Hannah: I love when artists talk to their fans through their music and Dear Reader scratches that satisfying itch. And there’s something even more satisfying about her telling us to hit the pavement running to find ourselves, but then doubling back by saying we shouldn’t take advice from someone who’s falling apart, implying that the only person you should look to for when it comes to fixing yourself is who you see staring back at you in the mirror. My favorite line. “No one sees when you lose when you’re playing solitaire.” This goes out to all of us who constantly feel alone and know that we only have ourselves. I’d rank it higher if I could.

On that song, she celebrated how far she and her fans had come “Long live the walls we crashed through, how the kingdom lights shined just for me and you,” she sings. This time around, on “Dear Reader,” she’s all like… thanks for sticking with me for all these years, but you should know I have no idea what I’m doing. Same, Taylor. Same!!!

Ben sat in the front seat of the catwalk as he bounced his leg up and down in anticipation for his model/singer girlfriend to walk down the stage, showing off with her other band members different articles of clothing that the brand was selling for both men and women.  

His eyes lit up with joy when you made your way down the platform, light shining up and you as your strutted down it with the model face that they instructed you to do, but it all failed when you sure Ben putting his thumbs up and grinning, causing you to bit your lip to hide your smile.

Ben was always like this, cheering you on with whatever you did in your bright career where millions love and look up at you as you cared for each and everyone of them whilst either acting, singing, or doing the odd model things when companies ask you to, like many other celebs.

But this time you were walking down the catwalk and you thought you was going to do it if it wasn’t for Ben.

And when the walk was done and over with he posted many images of the night with a caption of ‘my gorgeous girl.’

You fingers strummed the guitar in your hand as your mouth was near the microphone, singing your band’s song and keeping your eyes looking out into the crowd, making sure you never look at the front where your boyfriend was jumping around wildly with a grin plastered on his face as he blasted out the words to your song.

Ben took out his phone and recorded more of it and when you started enthusiastically yelling the song as you and your band jumped around after the words before going back to sing more. The fans danced and sang along with you guys and Ben’s smile could only widen in the atmosphere he was in. Watching his girl do the thing she loves the most in the entire world.

“THAT’S MY GIRL!” Ben Cheered, video still recording, when the song finished and you heard this part and you just left out a giggle instead of singing the final words of the song, your fingers slipped from the strings as well, causing it to hit the wrong chords as your brought your hand to your face, covering how flustered you was getting.

Your band finished off the song quickly with widen smiles when they noticed that you messed up again because of Ben.

“Benjamin, shut up.” You muttered into the microphone as you finally looked at him and he winked at you, finally happy that you were now looking at him.

He pointed at you again.

“MY GIRL!” He then flipped the camera round to face him. “And yes, I am sleeping with the lead singer, and no I am not a groupie…wish I was though cause damn that arse…”

“Benjamin!”

“But I’m something better…I’m her boyfriend so I get that arse all I-”

“BENJAMIN!”

 You didn’t know if Ben was drunk in this video – he wasn’t – as he dressed up in one of your tour outfits with a coloured t-shirt over his head that was similar to your hair colour as he jumped around, playing the air-guitar as he sang one of your many songs.

“Oh, thank you all for coming tonight.” He bowed as he mimicked your voice with a dramatic bow, making sure the t-shirt whipped up and down from his sudden movement down and back up again, pushing it out of his face when it slapped him when he stood straight again quickly. “You’ll so amazing and we love you all so much!” He placed his fingers to his lips, kissing it with a loud ‘mwah’ sound before moving them away from his lips and towards the imaginary crowd which insisted of you and your shared friends and some family.

“We also like to say that more than half of the payment from tonight concert will be going to our chosen charity of the month.” His voice went deeper to mimic a member of your group.

“Thank you and good night!”

“OMG!” Jack said in a sequel. “Can I have your autograph!” He ran up to Ben, practically falling on his knees as he rustled the paper in his hand and wiggled the pen in the air. “I love you!”

Mason, your brother, James, your cousin all followed suit as they sat or stood round him with hopeful eyes, throwing out compliments in as they spoke over one another.

“Marry me!”

Ben rolled his eyes when he heard James copy what many fans ask you, always joking around that you should leave Ben and marry them considering Ben hasn’t put a ring on your finger yet.

“Shut up.” He muttered and all the boys stopped and looked at him with offence.

“Oh, it’s a fake.” Your brother muttered before they all rushed to the giggling you, copying what they all did with you and Ben walked over with long strides and picked you up over his shoulder, to walk you away whilst the boys all cried out that they didn’t get the autograph.

“What are you wearing?” You giggled as you recorded your boyfriend who was happily in one of your band’s hoodie, drinking from a cup with one of your movies advertised.

“Clothes.” He shrugged. “Like my mug?” He grinned as he waved his nearly empty mug around to make a statement that it has you on the front.

“Very pretty.” You laughed and Ben nodded.

“The prettiest.” He sighed happily. “And on order I’ve got a t-shirt, socks, key rings, coasters, blankets, posters, shoes, hair gel – did you know your sold hair gel?”

“No…but I’m gonna ban it from you using it.”

He frowned.

“But it’s such a cool colour.” He whined, dropping his hands to his side and throwing his head back with a sad look.

“Oh well.”

“And toothpaste!” He looked back at you, shuffling on his knees to get to you. “Did you know you did your own toothpaste?” He grabbed your hands excitedly. “And toothbrush.”

“Nope…but suddenly we’ve turned into One Direction.” You joked, remembering the reading merch you could get from them.

“And I’ve chosen all of you at the theme, including the cover of album, vinyl and-”

“Babe, babe, babe stop.” You uttered with a wide smile. “You’ve gone crazy.”

He winked, “Crazy for you.”

Overall, he’d be one of your biggest comforts and vice versa. Just knowing that he’s watching the CCTV live of you walking down a dark or isolated street to make sure that you get home okay makes you feel a little warmer. American Horror Story (AHS): Violet Harmon

Violet would adore you. There would be some tensions because she’s quite abrasive (and rightly so, in some cases) but also because you both have depression, though you also have anxiety and you both put up fronts to hide yourselves. That’s likely how you bond - with Violet confessing to you one hot summer’s day that she “hates everything” and the whole situation with her parents. She can rant for hours when you leave her to it, just listening. Sometimes you share a part of yourself. You’re quite a talkative couple, but only in private. If there are people around, it’s obvious you’re together but there’s no set reason that they can see. Vivien and Ben have, generally, never seen their daughter so animated; you only bring good to Violet’s life. You’re both sarcastic and easily annoyed so any arguments are basically just really accurate roasting sessions until one of you hits a nerve (and then it stops because Violet just leaves to go somewhere - you never know where) or you’re both laughing. In this way, there are moments in your relationship that are hard to stomach. Watching mindless TV shows on Netflix and cuddling is a good way to break any ice that lays between you; Violet would make acerbic comments about something the lead has done and you’d listen, always able to tell if something more is under the surface. The similarities between the two of you creates your relationship; you see yourselves in each other and only want to help as best as you can.

The Vampire Diaries (TVD): Damon Salvatore 

Damon would be very protective of you. You don’t like appearing weak but even when you’re down and sobbing on your knees, your body unable to hold you up anymore, Damon’s never thought you looked stronger. It takes strength to show weakness, even when you’re alone. If you ever forgot to take your meds, Damon would stand over you in with a glass of water in one hand and your meds in the other, that passive-aggressive look on his face. He’d watch you take them, arms folded, and then he’d give you a steamy kiss that leaves your toes curling for the rest of the day. Damon pretends to have no feelings because it’s easier and you put up a front. However, because Damon can’t shut off his humanity without forgetting his love for you, so he has to face his humanity which means he begins to feel guilt and everything that’s already there if he wants to feel it, which he doesn’t but… He does eventually. Because of you. You are the good in his life.You have similar defence mechanisms so it’s not unusual for one of you to walk into a room, see the other and immediately say “stop doing that” or “don’t do that” - no one else can tell that Damon is pretending, except you and Stefan. Similarly, it’ll be the brothers who can tell that you’re pretending. The contrast of your long dark hair and your bright blue eyes would be what drew Damon to you and I feel like he’d call you his “little siren” because of that. As such, he comes to understand that it wasn’t Katherine he’s been looking for all this time…

… It was you.

Twilight: Edward Cullen 

You caught Edward’s attention by singing one day. He was just passing by, skipping Biology (blood work) and he heard you singing. He hadn’t meant to tune in to your radio station but sometimes he couldn’t help it. And you did have a lovely voice. He would likely buy some of the same albums that you own so that he could get to know you through music. Over time, he would learn to just intuitively tune in to your radio station and he’d hear your thoughts - this is a promise he would make to himself to not do once you’re friends and then dating and he’d definitely stick to it. He’s conveniently free on sunny days so you’d spend those days watching Netflix with a blanket around your body to protect you from his ice cold one (it’d be really hard to explain away catching a cold during a heatwave) and he’d press kisses into your hair, your kitty purring away just above your shoulders. Though Edward would do his best to not listen to your thoughts, on your worst days some of them drift through his mind and he’d take your hand tightly and say “Don’t” or “That’s not true.” He’d try so hard to help you; I think, pre-Bella, he also has depression so he’d do his best to help you because he knows what it’s like, and not just because he can hear you.

Yuri!!! On Ice: Victor Nikiforov

Victor would have such a loving relationship with you. Ohh, he’d try so hard to make you smile each and every day. When he’s not on the ice competing or eating way more food than he should be able to consume in one sitting (seriously, where does it go? Does his stomach start in his toes?), he’s curled up with you on the sofa watching something you want to watch on Netflix, Hulu or whatever else you use. He doesn’t mind what you watch, so long as you do it together. You love to shitpost and you love memes, and Victor loves taking pictures of the most obscure things so between the two of you, your followers are well fed! You’re always texting each other memes, jokes and sending pictures to each other with cryptic captions or song lyrics attached, making the other person burst out laughing in strange places like the ice rink or a classroom. You have more of a jokey relationship than a serious one, though that’s in abundance when either of you have depression or anxiety flare up. In any case, bed time is always met with gentle touches, soft smiles and careful reassurances. Even, and most especially, when you’re angry at each other. Love is never so important as it is during the bad times.

Once Upon A Time (OUAT): Regina Mills

It would be really touch and go to date Regina for a while. It would be very challenging and many people, including her and in your darkest times, yourself, would tell you that she’s not worth it. That you’re not worth it. But you’re all wrong. She is so, so worth it. Once she splits from the Evil Queen, once she grows into herself and grows into the Charming family, once she overcomes her abusive childhood and comes to love herself, she is a ray of sunshine and she glows. I’ve always loved and been so proud of Regina, and you would be too. You both put on fronts to protect yourself and you’re both very convincing so a lot of the time, the two of you have to mentally step back and see what the other is really thinking. Luckily, you know each other very well so it’s not hard to see when either of you are feeling especially insecure or unwell. Regina would literally rip her heart in half if it meant saving you, and at times she’s risked her life for you. She lives for your cuddles, especially when her many duties as a mum, a mayor etc. get on top of her and she just needs a break. You bring her back to herself time and again, and she will always do her utmost to return the favour to you. You have a strong, loving relationship underneath it all. It just takes patience and a special bond to be able to see it from the outside.

Game Of Thrones (GOT): Joffrey Baratheon

Joffrey is the most villainous person on this matchup. I was very hesitant to match you with him, I really was, but some of the others on this list are almost as bad. So. I think your personality would have a more positive effect on him. Cersei got her claws as far into him as she could, but even once she tried to reason with him and keep him reined in, he was too far gone for her to be able to help. But you... Mm. I think you’d have a similar impact on him to Margaery. You put on a front to protect yourself and this would be what Joffrey would listen to... to begin with. Once you’re properly courting and Joffrey is able to see what you don’t say; he would soften. He would still kill and be an utterly evil piece of work, but he would exercise more mercy. He would still wrongfully torment Tyrion, but he would draw a line when you start anxiously tugging on his sleeve. He doesn’t cuddle, mocking the action all together, but then one day he walks in on you curled up in bed reading a book and he just can’t resist curling around you, an arm slung over your shoulders to possessively keep you beside him. It would be a tumultuous, dangerous relationship but then... it’s Westeros, what do you expect?

for my sanshine ☀

in honor of san's birthday, i decided to make a playlist of songs that reminded me of him! the full playlist can be found here, but on here, i just wanted to list a couple of specific songs and why they remind me so much of san!

▷   best part  /  h.e.r., ft. daniel caesar :  sometimes san can just exude this soft, soothing energy that reminds me of this song; he seems so steady and gentle and just so wonderfully soft that it makes my heart feel incredibly full. that's the same feeling this song gives me; it reminds me of the same things san does — his aesthetic, if you will — waking up early next to the love of your life, coffee, rainy days spent inside reading together.

▷   cherry  /  lana del rey :  this is how i feel about san a lot of times; he's dangerous (read: onstage), but that just makes him even more hauntingly beautiful, enough to make me fall to pieces and cry that he's ruined me.

▷   mikrokosmos  /  bts :  it's a very positive song with a poppy, energetic beat, and thus i find it really fitting for san, the hyper, energetic, positive mood-maker of ateez, who's almost always smiling that giant, dimply, infectious sunshine smile that earned him his lovable nickname among us atinies: sanshine. ☀

▷   sunflower ( from spider-man: into the spider-verse )  /  post malone, swae lee :  one of my favorite osts, sunflower reminds me of san both because of his nickname, "sanshine", and because it's a lightearted, poppy song with a — there's no other way to put this — swanky beat. it's also one of my personal cheer-up songs, often putting a smile on my face when i'm in a not-so-great mood, and that's what san tends to do when he's not being a demon onstage for me. his name's pretty accurate; despite how much i joke about him, he's a steady mountain of positivity for me when everything else seems to be against me.

▷   moonchild  /  rm :  this is also a song i listen to when i need reassurance; it reminds me of san because of how gentle and reassuring he is. in a lot of his twitter posts, whenever he posts pictures, he always captions it with something showcasing his love and concern for atiny. i still remember, earlier this month, i had a bad (read: terrible) day, and it felt like nothing would make it better; i didn't feel very motivated to get up, even to get dinner. then, i saw a translation of san's most recent tweet pop up on my dash — he'd captioned his cute pictures with a sweet little note telling atinies to take care of themselves and eat well. that definitely put a smile on my face all day; it made me feel like someone out there really did care, even though they didn't need to.

▷   but maybe  /  maddox :  pretty similarly to moonchild, this is one of my calmer reassurance songs, and a personal favorite. it reminds me of san for the same reason moonchild does; he's such a gentle, kind spirit, always showcasing his love and concern for atinies' health and happiness, and that fills me with the same calm gladness this song does.

▷   heartbeat ( bts world original soundtrack )  /  bts :  i'm honestly sure not to explain this one, but when i first heard it, it immediately reminded me of san. its lyrics about love and destiny just really gave off a very san vibe to me!

▷   intro: long journey  /  ateez :  i first thought hongjoong and san had done this together before i found out maddox had actually spoken the intro, but it still reminds me of san. it just seems like something he'd say; he's a very passionate person, and i know for a fact he could probably persuade me to wrangle a tiger with less than ten words. witness the power that is choi san.

▷   sun&moon  /  nct 127 :  san reminds atiny of the sun (hence "sanshine"), and a lot of my friends often tell me i remind them of the moon: bright but sometimes distant, and very, very reflective. i put this song in my playlist because this is a playlist to the sun, from the moon, and that makes me smile to myself. plus, the song's pretty accurate: he's on the other side of the world, so when i smile at the moon, he's probably smiling at a sunny sky.

▷   lost in thoughts all alone* ( fire emblem: fates original soundtrack )  /  matthew mercer :  it's a very soft, reflective song, and that's why it reminds me of san. once you put all jokes and hyperactivity aside, he's a very thoughtful soul, and i feel like it would be easy to have a deep conversation with him.

▷   bombshell blonde**  /  owl city :  this song is a really fun one, and it reminds me of san because of his flair for flirtation, especially onstage. let's admit it, he can be quite the flirt onstage, and it can be pretty damn lethal. the song reminds me of him because it's suave and pretty seductive, treating love as a james bond-type spy game. it's just a very flirty and playful song, reminding me of how san can get sometimes.
