There are Widows and there are Men
A/N: None
Tumblr media
Series Title: There are Widows and there are Men
Chapter Title: Part One - Tangled Web
Song: Vigilante Shit - Taylor Swift
Pairings: Billy Russo x Black Widow!Reader
Word Count: Unknown
Warnings: Trafficking mentions, Red Room, Dreykov
~
You sat in your shared office with Billy. Filling it random pieces of paper work and going through some mission files. One particular file caught your eye. Some girls were being trafficked by Russians and Billy had sent some men out to retrieve the girls. It sent a wave of nausea to your stomach, remembering your time in the Red Room.
Billy wasn’t aware that you were a Widow. He didn’t know the blood that stained your hands. You never planned to tell him, scared of what would happen. It was lucky enough that he asked you to be his PA that day in the coffee shop. You weren’t going to risk losing it over the red in your ledger.
From across the room you can feel his eyes on you. It had been a while since you got out of the web of bodies Dreykov created you for. Once a Widow always a Widow, it was hard to shake the habits.
“It’s late you know? You should go home, I can finish up here”
Your attention moved to Billy. His words hit your core. There’s nothing you wanted more than to go home but the file you were studying had taken over your mind.
“I’m okay Billy, just…”
You trailed off unsure how to finish your sentence. There was no telling how Billy would react to finding out the truth. You had heard some brief tales of his childhood. Group home, meth head mother, but no details.
You heard his chair pull away from his desk and his footsteps making his way over to you. As he rounded your desk you looked up at him. His eyes were so dark, not only in colour but in energy as well. You could only imagine what he had seen being a former Marine. As he leaned against your desk his eyes wandered to the file you were looking at.
“Reading over the trafficking case huh?”
You nodded shyly. Around Billy you felt vulnerable, weak even. Yet you were still hiding that you were trafficked. Turned into a weapon, chemically subjugated to Dreykov’s control.
“You look tired, come on I’ll drive you home”
He placed a hand on your shoulder and you shuddered. The memories were still there, they always would be. Hesitantly you have in, packing your stuff up and following behind Billy.
His car was nice, really nice. Fitting to his personality he had a Rolls Royce Wraith. It exuded the luxury you had been desperate for as a kid. As you sat with the other Widows watching Sailor Moon and imagining you were somewhere else. He opened your door allowing you to climb in, before closing the door and going around to his own.
The engine started up and he asked for directions to your apartment. In the moment you weren’t energised enough to care about the shitty neighbourhood you lived in. It was run up but it was home. After finding your way to New York after the Red Room. This was the first apartment you had managed to find and you wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Billy pulled over in front of your place and you hastily exited the car. You turned around to thank him but he was out of the car, making his way to you.
“You gonna show me your home?”
You lightly shook your hand and grabbed his arm, dragging him up to your apartment. For a moment you wanted to kiss him. It was no secret Billy was attractive and you had been into him for a while now. The two of you made you way up the stairs and as you fumbled around for your keys, your neighbour had appeared.
“Late night again?”
Malcom was normally greeting you, after helping out the resident drunk Jessica. You nodded and his eyes moved to Billy.
“Please tell me you’re not taking him to bed”
You went to open your mouth but were interrupted by Malcom as he spoke once again.
“You know what? Good looking pair like you two, just keep it down please?”
With a click your door unlocked. You shoved Billy inside before giving Malcom a glare and entering your apartment. It was small and cosy, your first home.
“Nice neighbours”
Billy commented as he scanned your apartment. The kitchen and living space were all one room, with the bathroom and bedroom both being adjoining. You gestured to the couch and he took a seat.
“Can I get you anything Mr Russo?”
He gave you a look, you never called him Mr Russo unless there were other people around. You opted to just get two glasses of water and went to join him on the couch.
“You know, you’ve never told me about your family”
Your eyes immediately wondered up to him. You wanted to avoid this topic for as long as possible. Billy kept his gaze on you. Analysing your body language no doubt. As you went to say something an explosion came from the bedroom. Blasting pieces of drywall onto you. Billy tackled you to the ground holding his body over yours.
The two of you didn’t move for at least five minutes. It wasn’t until your door was ripped from its hinges did Billy move off of you.
“What the hell happened in here?”
Jessica had entered your space. Looking around for you. She didn’t care about a lot of people but the two of you had met back in college before she dropped out. You were close friends and you often involved in her vigilante messes.
“Explosive, no doubt he’s sent more Widows after me”
You forgot Billy was there as you spoke to Jessica. Climbing to your feet your eyes whipped around the scene. Rubble decorated the floor and Billy was standing, staring at you and your brunette companion.
“What the hell is going on? You know I pride ANVIL on knowing it’s employees but this”
He gestures to the scene around him.
“Just proves I know absolutely nothing about the person working closest to me”
Guilt runs through your body. You didn’t want him to find out let alone like this.
“I’m gonna go”
Jessica says, exiting the frame that once held your door. Billy attempted to walk over to you, but you took a step back. You couldn’t bring yourself to speak.
It felt like hours had passed until you gained the confidence to say anything. Billy was stood in the small kitchen nursing a whiskey. You started to walk towards him. Ready to tell him your past. Before you knew it, a bullet lodged itself in your neck. Throwing a hand to your neck, you attempted to try and slow the bleeding. Despite taking your fair share of bullets, in this moment you were lost. Billy ran over to you and the last thing you see before passing out is his dark eyes filled with rage.

In June 2021, Nathan Thrall published a lengthy essay “A Day in the Life of Abed Salama” in The New York Review of Books. Writing for HonestReporting, Salo Aizenburg described it as “a virulent anti-Zionist manifesto that relies on numerous errors, omissions, misrepresentation and misquotes to paint a one-sided image of Israel as a uniquely evil entity that seeks nothing more than the removal and domination of another people.”
Thrall has now turned his essay into a full-length book, a review of which appears in the New York Times.
Thrall’s book takes a fatal Palestinian school bus accident in February 2012 as the thread to critique Israel. Both Thrall and reviewer Rozina Ali, however, turn fact into fiction by using the accident as a means to bash Israel and portray Israelis as indifferent to the tragic event.
Ali writes:
The road the bus had been going down had been paved so that settlers could travel to and from Jerusalem without having to go through Ramallah, creating “the illusion of a continuous Jewish presence from the city to the settlements.” After Israel built new bypass highways for settlers, most of the drivers who used the old road were Palestinian. These Palestinian motorists were stopped at checkpoints, which meant traffic piled up, which meant that, to escape the bottleneck of cars and trucks, drivers had a habit of overtaking slow-moving vehicles by veering into the opposing lane of traffic.
Over the years, Palestinians and some media have used the catch-all excuse of “occupation” to absolve Palestinians of responsibility for their own actions. This has even included Palestinian men beating their wives or abusing animals. So Ali’s charge that Palestinians drive dangerously because of Israel is sadly all too predictable.
In the most emotive part of the review, Ali says there is “one particular detail about the accident that continues to chill me”:
The bus is ‘crackling with flames.’ There are screams and shouting. The children burn inside. The crash happened a few minutes’ drive away from a settlement and seconds from a checkpoint. An Israeli ambulance could have bypassed the checkpoints and taken a direct route to the scene of the accident. But about half an hour in, Thrall writes, ‘not a single firefighter, police officer or soldier had come.’
Children are burning to death and Israeli rescue forces are nowhere to be seen, apparently. It appears that Ali and Thrall relied on the inciteful remarks of then-Palestinian health minister Fathi Abu Mughli, who accused Israeli rescue services of failing to provide timely assistance, resulting in more casualties — a charge contradicted by eyewitness reports at the scene.
Media coverage from the day also tells a very different story.
Israel Radio reported that it took rescue forces seven minutes to reach the accident scene.
And Haaretz reported:
More than 50 ambulances and several rescue helicopters were called to the scene of the accident, near the West Bank settlement of Adam. The injured passengers, including three very seriously injured children, were admitted to several hospitals in Israel and in Ramallah. Later, however, Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service and the Palestinian Red Crescent agreed that most of the Ramallah patients should also be admitted to Israeli hospitals.
Not only were Israeli rescue services on the scene within minutes but Israel also went out of its way to treat the wounded Palestinian children.
In addition, Israel’s political leadership offered support:
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who was visiting Cyprus, offered the PA ”any aid requested.” President Shimon Peres telephoned Abbas to convey his condolences. Peres asked the Palestinian leader to tell the grieving families that his thoughts were with them in their time of anguish, and assured Abbas that Israel would provide the best possible medical care to those of the injured who had been taken to Israeli hospitals.
Ali concludes her damning review by calling “to examine the apartheid system that intentionally divides Israelis and Palestinians, as Thrall does so convincingly in this grim narrative.”
The BBC interviewed Israeli medical worker Shalom Galil:
Mr Galil said Israeli and Palestinian emergency services had worked closely together at the scene. “Palestinian firefighters were involved. As far as I could see, there was full co-operation between the firefighters of Judea and Samaria [West Bank] and the Palestinian firefighters.”
Israeli and Palestinian emergency services worked together; Israeli hospitals (where Arab doctors work with their Jewish colleagues) treated Palestinian children.
Rather than an example of an “apartheid system that intentionally divides Israelis and Palestinians,” this tragic event was evidence of the contrary. What’s more, it showed the essential humanity of Israelis when it comes to saving lives.
But that’s not a narrative that Nathan Thrall, Rozina Ali or The New York Times want readers to see.

a. Identify which of the journalistic expectations are met in each of the stories.
For the first news, it met the public interest as Abby Choi is a popular model and socialite. The drama between the ex-husband and his family was very eye-catching to the netizens. It is also eye-catching because of how gruesome the state of the body was found in. The second article falls into the organizing knowledge section, the details of the trials and the happening of the murder is very organized. The third one lies under the category of truthfullness, sources of the article are clearly stated.
b. What are the key elements in these stories that make them effective examples?
The key element for its eye-catchingness was mainly on how gruesome the state of the body was when it was first discovered by the police. Her body was found in a village house in the Tai Po district, her body was decapitated in many different parts, some were in the refrigerator and some at a cemetary in Tseung Kwan O. The most eye-catching part was that some of the body parts were retrieved from one of the two large pots of soup in the village house. It was described as “One of the pots was covered with thick fat, some radishes and carrots” and the meat was believed to be human flesh, later human bones and a skull was found in another pot. The second article key element is the details of the trial of the two teens, it was reported that Ratcliffe and Jenkinson, the two murderers, is handed a mandatory life sentence, and ordering them to serve a minimum term of 20 and 22 years, before they are eligible for parole. They will later be transferred to an adult prison after reaching the age of 18. They both showed no visible reaction to the sentence given to them. The key element of the third article is that they even provide CCTV of the car the murderer carjacked, and has statements from the county distict. The article provided a picture of SWAT officers set up outside the house of the murderer.
c. For any of the stories that didn’t meet these expectations, suggest changes that could have been made to improve them.
Some of the titles are just not catchy enough. Some don't have a trustworthy source. While some are news that the media and the netizens are bored of such as American school shootings, as this is nothing new.

BRILLIANT SCRAP MEN - Ben Fixman - #2 I remember when DMC went on a campaign to get the major wire manufacturers to ship us their scrap and over runs, Ben took out the full-page back cover of the Wall Street Journal showing a big polluting smokestack and a caption about the pollution from their metal going up in smoke. To make a long story short, Ben hired me at $100 a week as an assistant foreman to Kenny Cherry, his scale man. I supervised the laborers as they unloaded the industrial scrap metal and wire from 40 foot over the road trailers. Ben made sure that I did the physical work with the laborers. He wanted me to know what it was like, so no one could BS me as a foreman and I would appreciate what is what like to freeze or sweat your butt of in the plant. Unknown to me, he also had big plans for me and wanted to make sure I got a full education. He had me rotated to the foundry, loading, and unloading rail cars, and eventually running one of the 2- 12-hour shifts on the chopping lines. After about a year he moved me into the office where I became a settlement clerk. I would take the receiving documents, which I used to fill out in the plant, and create a settlement for the accounting department so they could pay the industrial account. BTW: Benny Fixman wrote his autobiography From the Ghetto to the Gold if you want more details on him. I read most of it and found it fairly accurate (as I knew it) and have to say that I am sure all autobiographies (like mine also) are usually slanted in a benevolent manner, with occasional amnesia, in favor of the writer. Whatever anyone says about Benny, who died at age 90 on November 7, 2015, he was the smartest and most forward-thinking scrap man of that era. DMC would go on to become a NYSE, Fortune 1,000 Company, and the largest recycler/trader of non-ferrous metals in the world. We had 1,441 employees, trading offices in St, Louis, MO., New York, Beverly Hills, CA. Tokyo Japan, Seoul Korea, and Hamburg Germany, plus large recycling plants in Montreal, Canada, Cucamonga, CA. St. Louis, MO., and Tamaqua, PA.
Benny took DMC public and bought around 33 other companies. This was a brilliant idea, because we were buying bricks and mortar with stock (or as he called it “inflated toilet paper”) plus we got the smart Jewish owners who built those companies from the ground up. That became a two-edged sword, since once these guys had all their stock and the stock was rapidly rising from the IPO price of $9 to an eventual $132, they then laid back and didn’t push too hard. They all had 100k salaries, a company car, and not much oversight on their expense accounts. There was really no motivation for them and when their monthly P&L got hit with corporate overhead, they kind of lost interest. That is not a new phenomenon. Stay tuned.

To reduce air pollution, many areas require regular emissions testing of automobiles to verify they meet air quality standards. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of required emissions and smog checks for personal vehicles - from test procedures to pass/fail standards. What is an Emissions or Smog Check for a Car? An emissions test (also called a smog check or pollution test) measures the levels of certain air pollutants in a vehicle's exhaust. It is typically required periodically to renew a car's registration. Key details on emissions testing: Tests tailpipe emissions as car runs on rollers Checks hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) Oxygen sensors also tested Models 1996 and newer tested via OBD-II scan tool Helps identify vehicles exceeding permitted emissions levels Reducing autos emitting excessive pollutants helps improve overall regional air quality. Why are Vehicle Emissions Tests Required? Testing vehicle emissions is mandated in many geographic areas to comply with clean air regulations. The Clean Air Act authorizes the EPA to set vehicle emissions standards. States are required to implement inspection programs in regions that exceed federal air quality standards for ozone pollution and other contaminants. Counties and states that fail to meet National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ground-level ozone are typically required under the Clean Air Act to implement emissions testing programs, along with other pollution reduction strategies. Currently, over 30 states have some form of mandatory recurrent emissions or smog testing for registration renewal. The EPA estimates these programs yield a 10-15% reduction in volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides emissions overall in adopting areas. What Areas Require Emissions Testing and How Often? States with county or regional emissions inspection programs include: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin Testing frequency varies by state and county: Annual testing - CA, CT, DE, ME, MD, MA, MN, NV, NY, OR, RI, VT, VA Biennial (every 2 years) testing - AZ, DC, GA, IL, IN, MO, NH, NJ, NC, OH, PA, TN, TX, UT, WA, WI Areas meeting EPA "attainment" levels can apply to reduce test frequency or eliminate testing requirements after maintaining compliance for a period of time. Contact your local motor vehicle department to confirm the emissions testing requirements and schedule for your county or region. What Does the Emissions Test Check and How is it Performed? The emissions test checks tailpipe exhaust levels of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Oxygen sensors are also checked. The standard testing procedure: Vehicle driven onto dynamometer (large rollers) Exhaust pipe fitted with equipment to collect emissions samples Engine brought up to operating temperature Dynamometer applies resistance to simulate driving conditions Multiple acceleration, deceleration, and cruise phases HC, CO, NOx, and O2 levels measured continuously Results compared against emissions standards for make/model/year Since 1996, most inspections are done by plugging into your car's OBD-II port to check emissions monitors in the vehicle's computer. Pass or Fail: Emissions Standards Your Car Must Meet For gasoline vehicles, maximum exhaust emissions standards are: Hydrocarbons (HC): 220 parts per million Carbon Monoxide (CO): 4.2% concentration Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 540 parts per million Additionally: Oxygen sensor must be present and functioning MIL light must not be illuminated (check eng
ine light) Fuel cap must be properly sealed with no leaks Any check engine lights, faults, or monitors "not ready" may cause an automatic failure. Standards vary by model year and vehicle class. How to Prepare Your Car to Pass Emissions Testing To improve your chances of passing emissions testing: Fix any check engine lights - Diagnose and repair any issues triggering error codes. Replace oxygen sensor - Faulty O2 sensors almost always cause failure. Replace over 100k miles. Tune up engine - Replace air filter, spark plugs, wires. Helps optimize combustion. Tighten gas cap - A loose or missing gas cap will trigger evap monitor failure. Complete drive cycle - Drive through all conditions to set monitors to "ready" status if needed. Check your local requirements - Some areas prohibit testing immediately after clearing codes. Doing proper maintenance and fixing problems that trigger check engine lights before testing gives you the best odds of a pass. How Much Does Emissions Testing Cost? Emissions test fees vary by testing station and state. Average costs range from $15-$35 for the basic test. This fee is sometimes included in your vehicle's registration renewal cost. Most inspection stations accept cash, credit/debit cards, or checks. In some states, waivers may be available if you spend a certain amount on emissions-related repairs and still fail the test. Contact your motor vehicle department for details on emissions test pricing and potential waivers in your area. Locating Nearby Emissions Inspection Stations Most testing stations are privately owned mechanics and repair shops certified by the state to perform mandatory emissions inspections. Options to find a certified emissions testing location nearby: Check your state's motor vehicle department website for station listings. Search online business directories for "emissions testing" stations in your county. Call your local mechanic and repair shops to ask if they do testing. Look for station signs as you drive - many post signs indicating they offer emissions/smog testing. Find stations close to home to make the required testing and potential re-tests as convenient as possible. Limitations and Exemptions from Emissions Testing In some cases, certain vehicles may be exempt from needing periodic emissions testing including: Classic/antique vehicles - Classic car status varies by state, but is typically 25+ years old. Motorcycles and diesel vehicles - Exempt in some states. New vehicles - New cars within first 1-5 years of age may be exempt. Cars driven very few miles - Low mileage waiver available in some states. Areas without I/M programs - Whatever your state does not mandate. Vehicles registered out-of-state - If registering car in a non-testing state. Check with your local vehicle registration office for emissions testing exemptions and limitations that may apply to your specific vehicle type, age or usage. FAQs How often do I need to get an emissions test done? Testing frequency varies by state but is usually either annual or once every 2 years. Check your specific area. Can I pass emissions testing with a check engine light on? No, any error codes triggering your check engine light must be fixed and light cleared prior to emissions testing in order to pass. Where can I find my latest emissions test results report? Testing facilities provide you with your test report. Motor vehicle departments also keep records of test results which you can request. What should you do if your car fails emissions? Begin diagnosis and repairs immediately. Retest as soon as possible before registration expires. Some areas allow repair waivers if you invest enough fixing issues. Are electric cars and hybrids subject to emissions testing? Pure electric vehicles are exempt since they produce no tailpi
pe emissions. Traditional hybrids still require testing in most areas. Completing periodic emissions or smog checks is required by law in many regions. Follow proper maintenance and testing procedures to keep your car in compliance. #Wiack #Car #CarInsurance #CarRental #CarPrice #AutoLoans

10 Tips to Make Your Car Look Like New Again
Tumblr media
Your car is one of your biggest investments, so it's important to take care of it and keep it looking new. Many people don't have the time or money to take their car in for a detailing every few months, but there are some things you can do at home to help keep it looking good. In this article, we will discuss 10 tips that will help you make your car look like new again!
1. Wash your car regularly - The most important thing you can do to keep your car looking new is to wash it regularly. You don't need to go out and buy a special detailing soap, use some mild dish or laundry detergent and warm water. Make sure to use a soft sponge or cloth when washing so you don't scratch the paint.
2. Wax your car - Waxing your car helps protect the paint from fading over time due to UV rays and other environmental factors. It also gives the paint a nice glossy finish that looks like it just came off the showroom floor!
3. Clean the tires - Keeping them clean not only makes them look better but also helps keep them in good condition. Use a dedicated tire cleaner to get rid of any dirt and grime that has built up on the tires and then use a tire shine product to make them look extra glossy.
4. Clean and condition the interior - The inside of your car can get just as dirty as the outside, so it's essential to keep it clean too. Vacuum out all of the debris, dust, and dirt from the interior regularly and use an appropriate cleaner (such as leather or plastic) to clean all surfaces inside. Also, don't forget to condition your leather seats with a dedicated leather conditioner!
5. Use glass cleaners - Keep your windows looking crystal clear by using glass cleaners specifically made for cars. These will help remove fingerprints, grease, and dirt that may have built up over time.
6. Clean the headlights - Dull or foggy headlights can make your car look older than it really is. Use a headlight cleaner to buff away any grime and help you get them looking new again!
7. Clean out the engine bay - It's not something most people think of doing, but keeping the engine bay clean is important as well. Removing years of built-up grease, oil, and dirt will ensure that everything runs properly and also helps keep your car looking nice!
8. Get rust removed - If you find some rust spots on your car (usually caused by road salt in winter), take it into a professional who can safely remove and treat it. Rust can quickly spread and cause major damage if not taken care of, so don't wait too long!
9. Touch-up scratches - Small scratches that are just on the surface can be filled with touch-up paint to make them look new again. This is a great way to keep your car looking fresh without having to do full bodywork.
10. Use specialized auto detailing York PA products - If you really want your car to shine, invest in some specialty cleaning products such as clay bars or polishes specifically made for cars. These will help remove stubborn dirt and grime that regular cleaners can't get rid of!
Following these tips will help ensure that your car looks its best all year round and will help maintain its value with car detailing York PA. Taking the time to care for your car can also save you money in the long run by preventing any major repair work that might be needed down the road. How Decide To Buy The Best Laptop To Your Requirements
By late afternoon we reached Facilities. I remember commenting how blue the sky was. There wasn't a cloud can be found. Then I seen that there weren't any condensation trails left out of your many jets that normally filled the skies. Of course, all airports was basically shut downward. It was an eerie element. We continued to listen on the radio for bits bobs of guidance. We could only imagine the minds exactly what the devastation might look similar to New York and in D.C. By now we had also observed the plane that took place in industry in Pa. Sketchy reports of heroism from the passengers in the ill-fated flight began to filter through news announcement. Given previously mentioned scenarios, feasible wonder why renting a laptop provides multiple advances over renting a desktop. Actual one simple answer for this question: convenience. Consider a few examples of when portability is needed and you'll understand for why. https://chothuelaptop.info/cho-thue-laptop-ha-noi/ rating Cards. Quite often, credit rating card will pay for for damages to accommodations car if it turns out of an wreck. Regarding eligible, most likely you would should refuse to acknowledge accident aggravate waiver and charge the full amount belonging to the rental car on credit score card. If understand your computer is coming about laptop rental the back of a truck to another location town, you are probably reduce on the seventeen layers of packaging tape. Homosexual couples handlers folks on whom the accountability of care can go is smaller. If your package is going via world, you must consider every precaution as responsibility of breakage as you go along is ad impossible to prove. The store manager of the store was gracious enough to drive us towards rental institution. We threw our bags into the rear of the pick-up and headed toward Georgia. We still had not seen what had happened nor did we possess of the details, therefore turned with the radio. Of course, every station was buzzing that's not a problem news. The reports are not clear, nonetheless they had confirmed that had been two planes that had hit the twin towers, and that both towers had zero. All we were able to determine there on that lone stretch of road was that our nation was under attack and that individuals freedoms and liberties we have sometimes had taken as a right were now being challenged by a mysterious attacker. I am certain that an individual might be already conscious that it isn't easy to get approved invest in a new desktop or laptop personal computer. One of the reasons why this could be the case, is that a company doesn't get easy option to collect there money each person has defaulted on the loan. Customer could send the computer back, but a refurbished computer system has very little value for the lender. Because within the growing need a personal computer, more companies are suffering from new financing programs for individuals who have no credit or poor consumer credit score.

Post-demise At Hand
TW: mentions of past OD, past drug use, off screen death of character (Alex), grief, anger, misunderstandings
TK isn’t sure how to react to the news, if he’s being completely honest with himself.
He learns about the death of his ex through a post on Instagram via an old mutual friend of theirs that he hasn’t been in contact with since even before he packed up his life and moved to Texas. It’s hashtagged: #RIP #gonetoosoon and TK almost laughs out loud like some kind of maniac, because is that all Alex's life amounted to in the end?
Two half-assed hashtags and a badly edited picture of Alex smirking at the person who took the stupid photograph in the first place. TK remembers that day; Alex had finally passed his drivers test and gotten his license. He remembers telling Alex to smile, remembers his ex boyfriend turning to him, rolling his eyes, saying something like “Why did I bother with this again? We live in New York.” except TK can’t remember what he said to Alex to be on the receiving end of that knowing little smirk.
The one he can’t stop staring at now.
“Earth to TK!”
TK almost drops his phone onto the floor, blinking up at the person waving their hand in his face. “Huh?”
Judd gives him a curious look. “Been calling you for like a straight minute, kid, you doin’ alright?”
TK nods. “Yeah, sorry, yeah, I’m good, I was reading an article, I uh, got distracted.” he shakes his head. “What’s up?”
“Your boyfriend’s downstairs lookin’ for you--” Judd tries not so subtly to peek at whatever it is that’s got TK so enraptured and catches a glimpse of a familiar face, one that gives him pause.
He frowns. “TK, what the hell? Stalking your ex, seriously?” he blurts the accusation outloud without thinking, which is of course the very moment Carlos and Paul come gallivanting up the stairs, their laughter at something one of them said dying out abruptly.
Paul’s eyes dart between the two men and he clears his throat awkwardly before motioning for Judd to skedaddle with him. Judd, who couldn’t take a hint if it hit him on the side of the head like a tire iron, simply folds his arms across his chest expectantly. “Well? Your fella’s right over there, so what’re you doing all up in your ex boyfriends business?”
Paul sighs. Jesus. “Judd. Maybe we should give them some privacy?” Carlos is scarily silent next to him and Paul just knows shit’s about to hit the fan, and he’d rather be far far away when it does happen.
Carlos swallows hard, wipes his hands against his uniform pants, and says, “It’s fine. I’ll um, I’ll see you at home.” before turning around and going back the way he came.
“Man.” Paul stares at TK, who hasn’t uttered a single word as of yet. “You’re not gonna go follow after him?”
Judd scoffs. “And do what? Tell him it’s not what it looks like?”
TK blinks rapidly a few times, as if coming out of a daze. “I--” His eyes go wide when he realizes what’s happened. “Shit.” he runs over to the edge of the railing to call for Carlos, but his boyfriend apparently bolted, because he’s nowhere to be seen.
Judd whistles loudly behind him, arms still crossed disapprovingly. “Carlos is a good catch, TK, shouldn’t be messin’ around with him if you’re not--”
TK whirls around to face him, the look on his face mutinous. “I wasn’t stalking my ex on Instagram Judd! Get your head outta your ass and outta my business!”
Judd takes a step forward and Paul can see where this is headed; he immediately gets in between the two men, arms raised. “Hey! Enough! You two need to relax.”
Judd huffs. “I’m not the one tryna step out on my--”
“Alex is dead.” Saying it outloud is surreal.
Alex is dead.
What the fuck.
Paul and Judd both give pause.
“What?”
TK sighs, aggravated, and shows them the post he’d been caught looking at earlier.
“TK...” Paul gulps. “I’m sorry man.”
TK nods but doesn’t utter a word.
Judd cringes. “Crap, I--” He wants to smack his head against the palm of his hand as hard as he can. “I’m such a heel, Jesus TK, I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed--I’m so sorry.”
TK leans his back against the railing and this time it’s his turn to cross his arms over his chest. “Yeah, well...tell that to Carlos.”
“TK I’ll call him right now and tell him I misunderstood, I swear--”
TK interrupts him again with a shake of his head. “No, no, it’s better if I just explain it myself.” he looks up at Judd through long lashes and manages a half hearted grin. “I guess I should be happy you respect my boyfriend enough to snitch on my ass?”
Judd knows TK’s throwing him a bone, but still, he doesn’t feel he can take it. “I do,” he admits. “But that don’t mean I should’ve went ahead and assumed the worst. You deserve better than that and for that I’m especially sorry.” The whole thing with his own father in law stepping out on his Grace’s mother is still messing around with his head, but that was no excuse to think the worst of TK, of all people.
But TK tells him not to sweat it, he’ll call Carlos and tell him everything, no big, really. And then he asks the two men not to mention anything about any of this to the Captain or to any of the rest of the team, if it can be helped.
Paul frowns. “TK, it’s not good to try and go through these types of things alone, you know.”
TK shakes his head. “I’m not trying to, really. I just,” he shrugs, looking a little like a lost lamb. “I don’t really know how I feel about it yet? So I’d rather not deal with everybody’s sympathies right now, if that’s ok.”
**********************
He calls Carlos but gets sent straight to voicemail every single time and when that doesn’t work he texts him that whatever he thought was going on, there was nothing to worry about, that he would explain if Carlos would just pick up his damn phone.
Work gets progressively busier after that and TK barely has time to catch his breath, much less to try and get into contact with his boyfriend, and so it’s not until the very end of his shift, hours later, that he’s able to rush home--that is, he thinks sullenly, if Carlos hasn’t changed all the locks on him.
TK shakes his head; Carlos wouldn’t do that. He’s probably stewing though, and that thought doesn’t make TK feel any better as he steps past the threshold and inside. He’s had such a long and tiring day he hasn’t even had time to properly process what’s happened to Alex.
Carlos has cooked dinner, if the wonderful smell coming from the kitchen is any indication. He’s at the table eating alone with the TV on in the other room for background noise, and he doesn’t even look up to greet TK, only motions towards the stovetop vaguely. “Help yourself.” he mutters.
TK ignores the food and takes a seat right across from Carlos, leans over the table with a grimace. “Babe, I swear to you it’s not like that. Judd misunderstood what happened--”
Carlos sets his fork down with a clatter that startles TK into jumping slightly. “Look, I get it, moving in is a huge commitment, it’s scary, I know, but I didn’t think you would--”
“Please,” TK stops him. “Please let me just explain, please.” he hastily takes his phone out of his back pocket and opens the app. He can hear Carlos sigh above him but it doesn’t deter TK from finding the post and holding it up to his face. “This is what Judd saw me looking at.”
Carlos reluctantly lays eyes on the photo, his irritation and hurt only peeking when he sees that it’s a photo of TK’s almost fiance. That is, of course, until he reads the caption, notices the hashtags below, and suddenly it all makes sense. He doesn’t know quite what to say, except: “Oh.”
TK nods. “Caught me by surprise. I um, I haven’t heard from him since, well, you know. So I didn’t really know how to react when I found out and then Judd came up behind me and I mean, you know the rest of the story…”
“Oh.” Carlos says again, because he’s still trying to process the news.
“Yeah.” TK shrinks back in his chair and the wounded look of him finally snaps Carlos out of it.
“Crap,” Carlos groans. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” He gets up and rounds the table, kneeling down in front of TK. “I was hurt and I ran off without letting you even get a word in, that was messed up and I’m sorry. Are you ok?” He makes a face at his own question, because of course TK isn’t ok. The man he’d proposed marriage to a little over a year ago now has passed, after all.
There’s no way he’s ‘ok’.
“I uh, I don’t know.” TK admits quietly.
Carlos puts a hand on his knee and squeezes gently. “It’s ok to be sad, Ty.”
TK shakes his head. “It’s--I’m not. I’m not sad. I think? I mean...it’s not like we were on friendly terms, you know? I’m more surprised I guess, than anything else. He was still so young.”
Carlos nods solemnly. “How did it happen, do you know?”
TK clears his throat and scratches at the back of his head. “The obituary I found online said it was some kind of car accident near PA. I didn’t really find out any more details than that, though. The funeral was earlier this afternoon.”
Carlos blinks. “Oh. None of your friends from New York said anything? Before today?” The fact that TK had to find out through Instagram is probably half the reason his boyfriend is finding it so hard to react properly to the tragic news.
“I didn’t really bother to keep in contact with a lot of our friends when I left, to be honest. And plus, they were all Alexs’ friends before becoming mine. So he kinda had the right to keep them after the divorce...in a manner of speaking.” TK runs a hand through the greasy locks of his hair and grimaces. “Anyway, I should probably go shower, it’s been a long day and I’m kinda gross.”
Carlos nods, letting TK worm his way out of the conversation without too much fuss.
**********************
In the shower TK stands under the spray of hot water and stares blankly at the tiled wall in front of him, irritated by the jumbled thoughts plaguing him. God, he thinks, I could really use a drink right about now.
What exactly is he supposed to be feeling right now?
Grief?
Anger?
Or perhaps regret.
It’s not as though TK ever got any real closure with Alex and now he never would. After being rejected by the man and worse yet, told he’d been replaced, TK hadn’t wanted to feel any of that pain and had gone to great and dangerous lengths to make sure he was good and numb that night.
He hadn’t meant to overdose. But he’d popped a couple of pills initially, so sure that he could control himself this time, that this time it would be different. But twenty minutes later when the two little white pills had done nothing to soothe his aching heart TK thought, what’s two more? And then two more after that, and then maybe two more, and then he’d lost count, but fuck it, if he hadn’t felt better in the moment.
The pills had worked! He couldn’t feel a thing, his head was blessedly empty and suddenly this giant weight had been lifted from his chest and he could breathe again. Until he couldn’t.
The water is cold by the time TK steps out of the tub. He dries himself off and slips on a pair of boxer shorts and an old gray t-shirt.
Carlos is waiting for him in the kitchen with a full plate, reheated, and normally the smell would be appetizing, but tonight it makes TK a little sick. “You alright? You were in there a while.”
TK nods. “M’good.”
“Here, sit, you should eat something before going to bed.” he sets the plate down in front of him and TK just stares at it like it’s the first time he’s seen food in a while and he’s not quite sure what to do with it.
“Thanks, but I’m not really hungry. I think I’m just gonna go to sleep. I’m tired.”
Carlos nods, his lips pursed like he wants to say something more, but instead all he says is, “Ok.”
******************
It’s nearly three in the morning when TK wakes up in a cold sweat, gasping for air. He’s not sure how he does it, but he manages not to wake Carlos up as he sneaks out of their bed.
A few minutes later he’s outside in his sweatpants and a hoodie, mindlessly jogging along his usual route. It’s not drugs or alcohol, but running does help. He runs and runs and runs until it hurts and even then, he keeps on running. It’s not until the cramping in his stomach is too much to bare that he finally stops and lets his body rest on a park bench.
And it’s then that he feels his phone vibrating in his pocket and realizes he’s got three missed calls. “Shit.” he picks up immediately, holding the phone up to his ear with a shaky hand. “Hey.”
“Where are you? TK, it’s almost five in the morning. What’s going on?” Carlos sounds frenzied on the other end of the line and TK can’t say he blames him.
“Sorry, I couldn’t sleep, I went out on a run and I lost track of time. I’m headed home now, sorry. Go back to bed.”
“I can come pick you up, where are you?”
TK sighs. “Carlos, seriously, I’m within walking distance, don’t worry, I’ll be there in like fifteen minutes.” he hangs up without letting the other man get another word in, which he knows isn’t right, but can’t really find it in himself to care.
His legs feel like jello when he gets up and the trek back to their place is torturous enough to make TK regret telling Carlos not to bother getting him. By the time he makes it home he’s limping slightly and his stomach is in knots.
The door swings open before TK can even take out his keys, and Carlos is standing there at the entrance looking a mixture of concerned and annoyed.
TK rolls his eyes and ignores the look, pushing his way inside and kicking off his shoes at the door. “What?” he snaps, when Carlos won’t stop staring at him.
Carlos frowns. “Stop that.”
“Stop what? What are you talking about? I went out for a run. You’re acting like I went out to shoot up at a meth lab or something. I was gone for less than two hours!” TK half shouts, his frustration spiking up a notch.
“Stop shutting me out. I know you’re upset about what happened to Alex, but you can’t just-”
“About what happened to Alex?” TK scoffs incredulously. “Nothing happened to Alex, Carlos, he died. That’s not something that happens to someone and then they like, get the fuck over it! He died! He’s dead! Gone! Never gonna see him again, didn’t get to say bye or even fuck you to the guy, he just went ahead and died and that’s that!” TK lets out a choked little laugh that sounds more like a cry than anything and covers his face with both hands, tries his best to get his shit together and under control, but it’s no use.
It’s quiet for a long time and then TK speaks again and it's soft and agonized, “I loved him.”
And Carlos nods, takes him by the shoulders and leads him to the stairs, where they both sit down and TK buries himself into Carlos, into his safe haven, and his breath hitches loudly and Carlos says, “I know.” and TK lets out a big broken sob.
“I’m here.” Carlos assures him gently, “I’m here. It’s gonna be ok.”

Our Enemies Deploy the Cognitive Bomb
The first thing you need to know about the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report that was released on 27 April accusing Israel of “apartheid” is that the accusation has nothing to do with apartheid as most people understand it, the racially-based system of oppression that was in place in South Africa before roughly 1991.
HRW is accusing Israel of “crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution,” which are defined by a treaty called the “International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid,” based on a UN General Assembly resolution passed in 1973, and the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
It should be noted that neither Israel nor the USA are parties to either treaty. The 1973 convention was signed by 109 countries, which do not include Israel, the USA, Canada, Australia, or any of the developed countries of Western Europe.
Here is the definition of the crime of apartheid as understood by HRW:
An intent to maintain domination by one racial group over another.
A context of systematic oppression by the dominant group over the marginalized group.
Inhumane acts.
The “inhumane acts” referred to by the definition include such things as murder, torture, “arbitrary arrest and illegal imprisonment,” forced labor, “deliberate imposition on a racial group or groups of living conditions calculated to cause its or their physical destruction in whole or in part,” all on the basis of race or ethnicity. While Palestinians often claim such mistreatment, their claims – often amplified and lent authority (the “halo effect”) by HRW and similar NGOs – are overwhelmingly false, exaggerated, or lacking in context (e.g., the claim is commonly made that a Palestinian was “executed” when he was shot in the act of stabbing a Jew or running one down with a car).
HRW also adds that
The reference to a racial group is understood today to address not only treatment on the basis of genetic traits but also treatment on the basis of descent and national or ethnic origin, as defined in the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination. Human Rights Watch applies this broader understanding of race.
In other words, apartheid doesn’t have to involve “race.” Any alleged discrimination against a national group can be considered apartheid. And given that “Palestinians” have diverse origins, including Egypt, Syria, Arabia, Jordan, Turkey, and even the same Canaanite tribes as the forbears of the Jewish people, they don’t even fit this broader definition.
When I hear “apartheid” I think of white, black, and colored beaches and restrooms, laws against interracial marriage or even sexual relationships, laws establishing segregated housing, employment, and public transportation, denial of the right to vote or hold office, and so forth. I think of official classification of people by color. It is not an exaggeration to say that such a system, brutally imposed by force (as it was in South Africa), is a crime against humanity.
And that, of course, is why HRW, an organization that has changed over the years from a legitimate human rights watchdog into part of the well-oiled (and thickly greased with dollars and euros) machine for the delegitimization and demonization of Israel, wishes to accuse the Jewish state of apartheid, a crime that today evokes revulsion throughout the world – and which, following the precedent set by the treatment of the Republic of South Africa, justifies the boycotting, sanctioning, and total expulsion from the international order of Israel.
As the Kohelet Forum notes in its response to the report, no country other than South Africa has ever been deemed an “apartheid state” by a majority of the international community, including China, Sudan, and others that have engaged in massive systematic oppression of minorities.
None of the characteristics of South African apartheid can reasonably be applied to Israel. Everyone who knows anything about apartheid South Africa and Israel knows that. There is simply no resemblance, and HRW’s abstraction of the crime of apartheid and application of the word to Israel is dishonest and is part of the cognitive war that is being waged against her as a prelude to her hoped for physical destruction.
But never mind. Israel is being accused of seriously mistreating Palestinian Arabs, both its Arab citizens and the residents of the Palestinian Authority and Gaza, simply because they are Palestinians. If that is true, it is certainly reprehensible. So we should consider if the report even succeeds in making that case.
The report is 213 pages long, so it is impossible for me to critique it in detail in a short blog. But here are some things that I noticed in the first few pages (see the Kohelet response to HRW for more):
The report says that
From 1967 until the present, [Israel] has militarily ruled over Palestinians in the OPT, excluding East Jerusalem. By contrast, it has since its founding governed all Jewish Israelis, including settlers in the OPT since the beginning of the occupation in 1967, under its more rights-respecting civil law.
This is untrue. There is no military government in Gaza – there is zero Israeli presence there at all – and areas A and B of Judea and Samaria are ruled by the PA. There is a military administration of Area C, the territory that is under full Israeli control according to the Oslo Accords, but that administration governs both Israeli communities and Palestinian ones. There is no “separate law” for the two populations.
In general, the report ignores the existence of the PA and the Hamas government of Gaza. It’s true that Israel controls the borders and airspace between the river and the sea (with the exception of the border between Gaza and Egypt). But it does not control the daily lives of all of the residents of those areas as the report asserts.
HRW criticizes Israel for not allowing free movement of Palestinian Arabs from the territories into pre-1967 Israel, and for not allowing those Arabs outside of Israel recognized by the UN as “Palestinian refugees” to enter the territories or pre-1967 Israel. It dismisses Israeli explanations that this is a consequence of the amply-demonstrated Palestinian propensity to commit murderous terrorist acts against Israelis, saying “[e]ven when security forms part of the motivation, it no more justifies apartheid and persecution than it would excessive force or torture.” Tell it to those thousands of Israelis who have lost friends and family members to Palestinian terrorists.
There is almost no mention of Palestinian terrorism throughout the full report, even though most restrictions placed on Palestinian movement, such as the Judea/Samaria security barrier, were instituted after the murderous Second Intifada, in which more than 1,000 Israelis were murdered by terrorists. The selective blockade of Gaza is criticized without reference to the thousands of rockets that have been fired into Israeli towns, or the numerous tunnels intended to infiltrate terrorists into Israel. There is no mention of the 2015-2018 “stabbing intifada” which took the lives of dozens of Israelis.
The report claims that within pre-1967 Israel, “Palestinian [sic] citizens [have] a status inferior to Jewish citizens by law” as a result of the Nation-State Law, which in fact does not restrict them in any way, and which is similar to constitutional provisions in other ethnic nation-states, including the proposed constitution for the State of Palestine. It also invents or misrepresents other laws, including those concerning citizenship and residence.
The report will probably be a prime exhibit in the upcoming “Durban IV” conference on racism which will be held this September at the UN in New York, on the 20th anniversary of the first Durban conference, which devolved into an “anti-Israel hate-fest.”
Accusations of apartheid and persecution are tremendously powerful, especially in the US in today’s climate of racial antagonisms. But the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is actually a national/political one, and not a racial one (although antisemitism plays an important role). It has little in common with pre-1991 South Africa or the racial problems of the USA. It is also a small part of a much larger project by a group of nations, international institutions, NGOs, and others to eliminate the Jewish state. These antagonists are motivated by geopolitics, religion, ideology, antisemitism, or all of these. By focusing only on the Palestinians, the HRW report has the effect of hiding this broader context.
Israel’s domestic political paralysis, which has been ongoing for at least two years, makes it hard enough to respond to the military challenges it faces from its enemies. But it is impossible for an essentially leaderless nation to properly fight a cognitive war. Fixing this has to be Israel’s top priority today.

Three: "New York"
Warnings: none
F.R.I.D.A.Y woke me up at 7 AM the next morning, about five hours earlier than I would usually wake up back home. Because I was home schooled, there were no alarms. But here... just being here was the biggest wake-up call I could've gotten. The universe was essentially saying, "Come on Howie, time to grow up."
F.R.I.D.A.Y began to speak, giving me the rundown of the day's itinerary, which included a meeting with S.H.E.I.L.D at noon, and the flight departure to New York directly afterwards, the transportation to which I would most likely be bombarded by cameras.
Tony assured me that Happy would have everything under control, no harm would come to me. But, then again, by telling the world that I am Tony Stark's daughter, I was essentially putting a target on the back of my head. Telling anyone that wanted to get back at my dad, "Here I am! Come use me as bait!" But, Tony said he doubted any of that would happen, only an idiot would mess with him and his billion dollar space-guns.
I walked across the cold tile floor of my bedroom, reaching to the dresser to pull out some jeans and a t-shirt, when I noticed that they were already placed out on the chair for me. Pepper, I assumed, had put out a pair of black shorts and a plain white long-sleeve. I would need sunscreen. I may have gotten a tan over the years of living in the sunniest place on earth, but I still burned pretty easily.
"Squirt," a voice boomed over the PA. I jumped, not realizing that was a feature in this house. I'm not sure why I didn't already assume that was possible, it was Tony freaking Stark, "Come upstairs when you're done getting dressed, Pepper wants to debrief you on meeting protocol."
I slipped on my shorts and shoes, completely fine with the large hoodie I had worn to bed instead of the shirt Pepper had laid out for me, and ran upstairs.
"Good morning, Astrid," Pepper said as she walked briskly past me and to the kitchen, tapping away at her tablet. She always looked so professional, I suppose as CEO of Stark Industries she would have to be. She had been my role model since I was a child, my father on the other hand was simply a name and face on the news every once and awhile, "Tony asked me to go over protocol with you."
"Yeah... he told me."
She met my gaze and smiled as she looked down at her tablet, "You look like him."
I scoffed, "So I've been told."
She sat across from me and pushed a bowl of fruit towards me, "Should we start?"
I nodded and said through a bite of cantaloupe, "Yeah sure that sounds fine."
"Don't add any unnecessary detail in your answers, make sure to keep it short and sweet, to the point. I'm willing to bet most of the questions will be directed towards Tony anyway. But in the situation that they do ask you questions, they will most likely be in regards to how you feel about the situation with you and your father, not to mention the death of your mother.
"If you're asked for an opinion on the state of things, make sure you reply with indifference. Not necessarily lying, but not letting them in on every little thought you have, does that makes sense?"
"Yes, perfectly."
"Good," she sighed, "there's more in here about professional language and formalities, but I don't think you need to be reminded of any of that, do you?"
"No ma'am," I shook my head.
"Good," she shut the case to her tablet and motioned behind me, "I'll leave you to eat your breakfast."
"Looks great Pep," Tony chirped as she walked down the hall, off to do more work for Tony in preparation for the meeting.
"Long day," he sighed as he sat down, pulling my bowl away from me to eat the rest.
"That's mine," I said, pointing to the bowl with my fork.
He snatched the utensil out of my hand and stabbed a strawberry, "Not anymore," he said with a smirk.
"Apparently so," I sighed, resting my head on my hand. "When do we leave?"
"The meeting is at noon, so we'll probably leave for New York in about 30 minutes."
"I thought the conference would be here," I raised an eyebrow.
Tony sighed in irritation, "So did I but Steve wanted to be there even though this isn't even about him, so New York it is."
I began bouncing my leg, a nervous tick I'd developed at a young age. I didn't want to meet them, not yet. They were practically celebrities... and I was just me: a stupid little girl from Hawaii who didn't know anything about this side of life. The sacrificial... dangerous side of everyone that my father was so aware of, was now waiting for me in New York.
"Hey kid," Tony put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed, "Just be yourself, that's what I've done and it works for me. You have no reason to be nervous. Everything will be fine."
I didn't believe him.
"Plants, huh?" Tony asked from across the isle of the jet. Part of me felt relieved he'd finally said something. We'd been on the plane for almost an hour without any conversation, not even small talk.
I turned and raised an eyebrow, "What?"
Tony motioned to his tablet, "It says here on your school file that you're interested in botany. Any particular reason for that?"
"Plants can't flinch when you poke at them," I replied sarcastically, earning a scoff from Tony.
"C'mon kid, be real with me," he said lightheartedly.
I sighed, "Well... really I wanted to study marine botany. It seemed like a good way to stay near the ocean, near my grandparents."
"We have some really good programs in New York, if you want to pursue that. Or... Stark industries could start one-"
"Tony," I interrupted him. He raised an eyebrow and sat back in his seat. I could tell I'd struck a nerve. Note to self: Tony Stark does not like being interrupted. "Sor-Sorry," I stammered like a moron, "It's just that I already have online courses that I take... and I read textbooks on the internet-" I stopped myself from rambling and took a deep breath, steadying myself, "What I'm trying to say, is that I'm good just... teaching myself." He scoffed and went back to his tablet. I poked my chin out and raised my eyebrow, "What's funny?"
He smiled and shrugged, "I was just thinkin' you sound like me when I was your age."
New York was freezing... at least... it was compared to Hawaii. The April weather in Manhattan was colder than any weather in my hometown. Part of me was refreshed... another part of me was stressing over the amount of money Pepper had probably already spent on new clothes suited for this weather. Even the car was cold.
Tony was typing away on his phone. Which reminded me... my phone. I needed to text Kaitlyn. I logged into messenger and was bombarded with text messages from a very panicked Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn: Howie? You told me you'd text me.
Kaitlyn: Astrid Howard, do not make me come get u.
Kaitlyn: Dude, y r u on the news?
Kaitlyn: Please... just reply to me when you get this.
Me: Hey, sorry I didn't get ur text earlier. I promise I'll explain everything tonight.
"Kid," Tony said, grabbing my attention by putting his hand over my phone screen. "We're here."
It took me until then to realize the car had stopped, and I was right in front of the new, recently rebuilt Avengers Facility. Standing outside the two front doors was Captain America and Bucky Barnes, two faces that I'd recognized from the posters lining Kaitlyn's walls.
"Ready?" Tony asked.
I shakily nodded, "Okay, let's do it."

Malaise (Chapter 1 - Calling Tara)
Warnings: Mentions of escort services and sexual acts
Notes  - I wanted to try and write something that I imagine might be a bit closer to the real experience of Keanu than my stories with romance and babies etc. Not completely sure where it’s going just yet but thought I would put out my first 2 chapters and see what people think.
Keanu stared at the phone in his hand again, thumb poised over the green phone symbol. He didn’t quite know why he was hesitating.  He had found himself unable to make even the simplest of decisions with any speed lately. His hand drifted down to his groin where he rubbed himself absent-mindedly. He took a deep breath and tapped “call”.
“Codename please” the robot voice said
 “KCR”
 “please type in your pin”
He punched in 090264 wondering once again if he should really try to cover his tracks with things like this but nothing had leaked in the 10 years+ of using the agency . They were discrete and the system was designed to shield the calls by using the pin system and he was careful with his phone, never giving details to strangers. Heaven forbid if his number got out to hackers and they figured out that he made fairly regular calls to an elite escort agency!
Once through to a human being at their end, he asked for Tara who was his regular. He needed sex and as soon as she was available.  He specified “the usual” and put the phone down, going out to sit by the pool and have a smoke as distraction from his horniness.
He’d  tried a couple of his “friends with benefits” before calling the agency but they were out of town and he didn’t want to call Autumn, she was too needy for how he was feeling right now. There was history there of an on and off relationship in the early 90s that had been one of the ones that proved to him that he wasn’t cut out for commitment. She couldn’t deal with his regular absences to shoot films and he couldn’t stay faithful for that long either. Still, even now, they’d  end up in bed together sometimes, but he knew she still wanted more, more than he could give so it wasn’t fair to her. Back in the day she’d been more wild and bohemian, more aligned with his view that sex was just sex and you could enjoy it with or without the emotional baggage.  And she’d been willing to let him try things in his younger days like anal sex and a bit of BDSM - she liked to be dominated. Neither of those things were really his bag now but he’d been on a journey  of sexual discovery back when they started adding sex into the mix and she’d been a willing traveller.
He’d been in London a couple of weeks back and met up for dinner with an actor /writer friend Doraly – she wasn’t seeing anyone just now either and they both needed release so they’d gone back to her flat afterwards and fucked. That had been the last time and now he was antsy.
He got a text from the agency about 15 minutes after placing the call. Tara could come tomorrow. With Tara, part of the deal was to share some conversation and food first, basically a bit of a fake date night. The irony wasn’t lost on him that he wanted to have the trappings of a date as part of the sex he was buying! He dropped her a text to ask what she fancied  -  she chose dim sum and wan tons - she knew him well enough to choose something he liked too.
Later when he went to bed, he jerked off not wanting to come too quickly the next day. He thought about Tara as he pulled on his cock, imagining her fragrant thighs astride his head. That was always the first part of ‘the usual’  - she had the most delicious pussy and he would always feast on that first before straight sex of some kind. He wasn’t required to specify positions for that, only if there was anything they classified as kinky or out of the ordinary.
The next day, he went for a long ride up PCH to clear his head and kill some time.  Tara was due to his house at 6.30 and the dim sum at 7. He’d got a fine bottle of Chablis, her favourite white and he was looking forward to catching up with her. She was always interested in his work and she enjoyed theatre, movies and books so there was always something interesting to talk about. Best of all, there were no demands. He only had to give what he was willing to and mostly that was wanting to be sure she had at least one orgasm – he derived at least some of his satisfaction from that as well as the obvious appreciation she had for his body. There was no need to keep her at an emotional distance because she didn’t ask for emotional closeness from him, not beyond the session that is. She was good at the whole date night scenario as long as it lasted though and that’s what he wanted tonight.
With the other women in his life, barriers were put up. Sometimes that was in quite a formal way so if he was with someone new, he’d make clear he wasn’t able to commit to a long term or monogamous relationship. He’d usually blame this on work and of course that was a major practical factor, but a voice inside told him there were probably other things in his personality or life experience that prevented him from wanting a long term relationship. He valued his time alone as well – not just the time to pursue his career and help run the Arch business. He wanted to be able to spend a day reading or playing chess against the computer or simply taking off on his bike or to the beach without anyone being pissed off about it.
The other barriers to closeness he put up were more subtle. He was always very guarded about sharing personal information beyond what he liked in the arts and what food he liked, he would avoid introducing women to other friends or family and would rarely go out with them in public, ostensibly to protect them from publicity.
In his younger days, he simply had not been ready to commit to one person and the practical issue of going away so often for filming or publicity had made that impossible too in combination with his healthy appetite for sex - he wasn’t able to go without for that long. Then as he’d got older and more famous, meeting someone who was really interested in him as a person,  not as a meal ticket or a connection to exploit, became increasingly difficult and led him to put up barriers. And then there had been Jen and Ava, a terrible situation filled with loss and angst that had finally closed the door, he was pretty sure, for good. In truth, he hadn’t gone into that relationship with monogamy or kids in mind either, it had been thrust upon him but he had loved her and the loss of both the baby and then her left him feeling like him being in a relationship was a curse that he should not inflict on anyone.
He thought about all this on the ride. He knew his physical needs could not be met without ‘work’ (at maintaining a relationship or multiple ‘special’ friendships) or resorting to calling on Tara or one of the other escorts when she wasn’t free. That need for sex was one of the reasons he had 2 or 3 friends with benefits on a kind of rotation and why he sometimes, against his better judgement usually, embarked on a fling with a fellow cast member, or occasionally there would be a random meeting in everyday life like Anita who had worked as a PA to his mother for a while. Those flings could sometimes be quite passionate for a month or so, sometimes longer and he knew his instincts for generosity and chivalry could sometimes war against those proclamations of not wanting commitment. That had caused some fiery endings  such as with Lynne Collins. He’d even been quite public with her, eating out, shopping, flying up to New York to see her in “As you Like it” and attend the after party as her date – all signals, along with the good loving he always tried to give his ladies, that suggested he hadn’t really meant it about not committing – but he had and she sure did not like it, dropping him like a hot potato when he made that abundantly clear. That wasn’t an unusual pattern in terms of how women eventually responded to his lack of commitment. He was always clear about his position up front, but it didn’t always put off the women who did want something longer term. They probably thought they could change him and those behavioural mixed signals no doubt kept them thinking they would be the one to break him! Eventually though, they would lose interest and the cycle would start again.
He loved sex and exploring women’s bodies, getting to know them – that’s one reason he kept going back to the same friends and escorts. The flings came in for the thrill of the new he guessed, it wasn’t that he was looking for ‘the one’, at least he didn’t think so.  With a few women in the past there had been a real connection and intimacy that had been monogamous for a time but that was a long ago now.
He returned from his ride at around 4 giving him time for a shower, a nap and putting fresh sheets on the bed before Tara arrived in her cab.  He hadn’t seen her for a few months having been away on a shoot  - as she stepped out of the car and came up the drive, he saw she was as slender,  beautiful and well turned out as ever. She was tall with long, wavy chestnut hair and in keeping with his taste, quite large breasts – all natural too, another preference. He greeted her with a kiss on the cheek and invited her in.
