Lucy is sat at her desk, her eyes glued to her phone. It has been hours since she last heard from Kate and, with every minute that passes, the tangled ball of dread in her stomach grows larger. It has been over forty-eight hours since Kate left for Caracus, dragged into Tennant’s messy history, and Lucy feels on edge. Sure, it is not unusual for them to get into dangerous situations in their line of work but there is something about this that feels different; maybe because the one person they are all supposed to trust has suddenly become untrustworthy.

She knows she is not the only person to feel it. Jesse and Kai sit nearby, heads buried in research but every now and again she sees them staring into space, as if they too are trying to figure out what Tennant is hiding. Lucy should be reading, but she can’t concentrate until she hears from Kate.

Ernie appears to find out if there is any update, trying to keep out of Swift’s sight. Lucy shakes her head, her eyes dropping back to her phone and willing it to ring.

“What if…?”

“Don’t go there, Luce,” Ernie tells her.
