The twink and twunk duo. They're close acquaintances/casual friends at best.
Mini bios and fun notes below the cut:
Tenai is a Jedi Shadow who likes to be left to their own devices and who generally doesn't like people. People generally oblige, since they're not al that likeable anyway. Tenai's good at playing a character though, and so when they have to, they can be sweet a honey and twice as smooth. Maybe it's why they're so unpleasant when they're allowed to be authentic. If one were to make the effort to get to know Tenai and be let into their own little world, one would find an unexpected soft side to them. Tenai is full of pondering phylosophies and odd little quirks that they themself have a hard time explaining. When they were brought out of their Shadow work for the war, they were very displeased, but recognized the importance of all hands on deck- the other Shadows could live without them just fine. Taking command of the 407th Recon Corp was a difficult affair, both for Tenai due to their lack of experience, and for the clones who were met with this rude little gremlin who keeps appearing ominously from dark corners instead of a regal jedi. They made it work though, and the late Marshal Commander Kibo had been too much of a tenacious sweetheart not to befriend. Tenai Tasiko is now one of the Jedi Shadows still helping out with GAR matters. They've grown restless from sitting around during peacetime, which is really quite un-Jedi like. Yes, this bothers them greatly. They've had a number of crisises from it.
Ishan Ri got the job in the GAR intelligence division not really of his own accord. His father was friends of an officer there and a firm believer that working as a librarian was NOT the right career path. Ishan's brief stint as a research/data analyst for his country government looked fine on a resume, and during wartime, you take any hand that you can get, especially if that hand is recommended by someone already working for you. Ishan stayed at the job partly for the pay, but also because he found himself finding a real sense of purpose in it, feeling like they were really helping people by providing intel. It was during his second year as an employee that the war ended. He kept the job to help with the post-war cleanup of slave empires and crime syndicates still operating in Republic space. It's during one of these cleanup missions that he meets Fives, an ARC Lieutenant of the recently founded 501st SOF Unit.
You'd think Tenai would be one of those gatekeeping emo indie music enjoyers, but if asked about what they listen to, they will go on a long explanation about how their chosen favourites are the best and how everyone should listen to them. They're a huge techno fan and a connaisseur of weirdly ethereal rap music. No one who asks Tenai about the type of music that they listen to expects this. If they were in a modern AU they would just wear a hoodie and a cozy sweater everyday no matter the weather. 8 times out of 10 there's a sleeveless turtleneck underneath because those rock. They're not particularly attached to their hair since they have to dye and cut it when doing undercover work that requires it, but they do take care of it as best as they can.
Ishan listens to pretty much any genre. It's just as likely to hear him rock out to agressive punk as it is to see him stare into the distance while Sufjan Stevens plays. Would know a lot of Just Dance choreographies only because Just Dance is fun and was Something To Do at house parties. The type to hyperfixate on singers/bands, do NOT ask him about these unless you're ready to listen for two hours (this is usually how asking Ishan questions goes honestly. The guy can talk if prompted). Very cozy modern librarian type of vibe. Think less messy version of Jon Archivist.

oooooh please expand on this !!! i always wanna hear more about scully https://www.tumblr.com/waiting-for-the-day/720301741123551232/ykno-what-we-dont-talk-about-about-how-hard-txf

(the referenced post)
1/
Tumblr media
the third hour of the series, squeeze is both the first monster-of-the-week and the first episode to establish the impact of the x-files on scully's life, offering her choice and the audience perspective.
opening on lunch with an old classmate, scully catches up with her peers and how they are progressing after the academy (marty is supervisory agent of foreign counter intelligence, tom is on the fast track in violent crimes...dana is "mrs. spooky" in the basement, having "close encounters of the third kind")
this first scene equates scully with mulder in more ways than a derogatory nickname; colton tells her about his tough case in violent crimes because he wants her to ask mulder.
this is a line that is walked throughout season one, as mulder is still thought of as "the best analyst in the violent crimes division," despite having left the VCU two years earlier. often, the FBI will need his input on a case, while still disregarding and disrespecting him, and we can see this extended to scully here.
Tumblr media
"if you don't mind some overtime, you're welcome to come aboard with us, on this. that is if you don't mind working in an area that's a bit more down-to-earth."
having been invited onto colton's case, scully writes up a profile (that ends up being exactly correct, and ultimately catching the killer, even though mulder doesn't agree with her position) and presents her findings.
when a stake-out is planned based on her work, colton's superior in the VCU tells her that she is "welcome to come," reluctantly inviting her to her own plan.
Tumblr media
throughout the episode, scully does her best to present herself as capable and professional, but mulder doesn't make things easy for her; he constantly leans into every joke made about him, negating his own authority and playing into the degrading public opinion, something that scully has never seen.
she knows that there is more to the x-files, and more to mulder, than little green men- but that's a kind of vulnerability that's been exposed to her, and her only.
Tumblr media
and the more that she aligns herself with mulder, the more the wavering stand she has in the FBI's "boy's club" falters.
2/
Tumblr media
contrasted with the begrudging inclusion of the men climbing the ladder, squeeze showcases mulder in the supportive role, instantly adjusting his theories and profile to incorporate scully's input. which he does without taking the lead.
Tumblr media
and he takes the time to tell her that if she wants to work with colton, he understands and respects that; directly contrasting the VCU's constant disdain for scully's work on the x-files.
this is something that he stops her to say immediately after hearing colton's line, "you said mulder was out there, that guy's insane." (which was not only demeaning, but implied that scully had been belittling mulder behind his back, which isn't true)
Tumblr media
later, he casually says that they need to catch tooms quickly, because in 30 years when he comes out again, scully will be "head of the bureau."
he not only assumes that she won't be working with him for long, but that she'll be successful in her own career, climbing the ladder to the very top; a foregone conclusion.
(this is something that he laments 25 years later, in season 11's nothing lasts forever, when he admits that he imagines a world where she had walked out of that office, and been "kersh's boss at the FBI")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
squeeze also brings back the height difference reversal that is so meaningful in the pilot, and throughout the series.
mulder is 10 inches taller than scully, and often will intentionally lower himself beneath her. especially in vulnerable or emotional situations.
i love love love these tags from iconicscullyoutfits on this scene:
"feels like other men would stand up instinctively to be on the same level as her. especially in squeeze which was all about her being belittled by other men and struggling for equal footing in the boys club of the fbi. she comes down to mulder and she's big like him."
3/
Tumblr media
when i talk about squeeze as being the most important episode to understanding scully's motivation, i mean this moment here.
at the scene of the fourth murder, colton won't let mulder enter, and when scully threatens to report him, he asks: whose side are you on?
Tumblr media
her answer, that she is on the side of the victim, encapsulates everything that drives her dedication and devotion from the beginning.
this show, and this partnership, is based in shared values rather than shared belief; that's what makes it work.
scully wants to be on the side of the victim, to be helping those that need it, and she's quickly realizing that this isn't how you thrive in the federal government. that despite how much she "believed in her country" when she left medicine for the FBI, this isn't what the federal government does, or prioritizes.
however, it is what mulder does, and she's learning that too.
the side of the victim and the side of law enforcement are not the same, and mulder knows that already, has already given up the respect and acclaim of climbing the ladder. he's on the side of the victim to the "point of insanity," to the point of abandoning reputation.
this is what scully gives her life over to, this is where she finds the work that she left medicine to pursue.
Tumblr media
and ultimately, she severs her ties with the outside world.
the next time that colton makes a mean comment about mulder, she tells him that he can keep climbing the ladder, but she hopes he falls.
Tumblr media
the thing is, scully doesn't need to be associated with mulder to be looked down upon by her peers. she would be regardless, by nature of being a woman in a male-dominated profession.
but she could cleave to authority, continue trying to fit in and climb the ladder. she chooses not to, to go where aligned with her convictions, and where she's respected; even when it means sacrificing a seat at the table.
Tumblr media
and in the end, they walk off side-by-side (he follows her).

mej unusual din kasi na medtech students ang visitor namin, mas common kasi Bio and Chemist or Biochemist. feeling ko mej nagulat din sila medtechs kaming analysts. i wonder if napaisip ba sila ng "oww pwede ko pala maging career path ito??"
i mean idk, sa generation ksi namin ang alam pa din namin sa pagiging medtech ay sa clinical path o kung may nakakaisip man mag venture sa mejo iba eh nasa isip mo na ang hirap makapasok don. for example ako, gusto ko talaga non crime lab pero alam kong di sya bsta bsta sa process of application palang o pag inquire ng vacancy. yung féeling na kahit dapat kapantay ng Bio or Chem grads yung edge mo coz laboratory, eh iba pa din ksi mas general yung pinag aralan nila compared sa Medtech na healthcare ang tutok.

for the oc questions: use a random number generator and answer the first three that come up >:3
10. OC you most struggled to make?
that is my dear dear oc acevedo nez-navarro! they have gone through so many iterations and it has taken me a very long time to properly flesh them out to someone who is both dynamic and enjoyable to write. they're a closed off and constantly exhausted data scientist who is trying so so hard to keep it together but they are just not. keeping. it. together. they wish they didn't care about everything but they do and it drives them crazy!
second place has to go to the idiot that is oliver rahal-ross, who has also gone through many iterations. he's an impulsive and cocky art thief who does nearly everything for the bit/to mess with people. he has crazy commitment issues and has WAY too many exes but he's settling down now guys he swears it. his personality used to be a lot more guarded and generally dramatically tragic (he faked his death at some point) but i reworked his backstory so now he's just dramatically dumb <3
these two went to college together and they were academic rivals <3 now they are reluctant allies who just barely bear with each other <3
19. What are some things that inspired your stories? Real events? Maybe a dream?
everything! but mostly other media bc creation is a beautifully cyclical thing. for the particular story the two ocs mentioned above are from, it's also been a lot of wikipedia page rabbit holes on american war crimes and the cold war.
24. Do you have/want a career in your medium? If not, what do you do/want to do instead?
god no! if i'm going to be a writer as a career, i'll be a journalist. but the idea of being a novelist or poet is awful bc my writing schedule is so irregular. i'm studying politics and i'd like to be a political analyst :>

Do you feel like sometimes there are some players that are just not meant to win the Stanley Cup? It's sad until a few years later when you see them thrive as coaches, development staff, analysts, even non-hockey roles; only then you'd realize that they were perhaps destined to find greater success after their playing career? I mean there are several players who didn't win any when they were players and blossomed to becoming great team staff or businesspeople
anons that reach into my brain and start scrambling things around like an egg. and you’re so right, you see people like razor, brantt myhres, sully, hell even bish thriving in their own roles outside of just player. and that’s amazing, that’s everything, that’s how life keeps you going. but sometimes i can’t help but feel like there are players that should have won the cup, their skills and their presence on track for a destiny that is just out of reach because of one minor thing that threw them off the path. players who, sure, will be able to find success elsewhere but have been preparing for so long for that one goal that it’s just a bit foreign now. g, out from an ot winner that barely snuck through or nate, confiding so quietly that he doesn’t have a back-up plan and that he’s just got to make it. it’s first rounders and franchise stars pitched so heavily against the shadows of their cup predecessors that although of course they can have a future anywhere it doesn’t seem like the kind of future they’re allowed to have. it’s unforgivable and a tragedy and a crime. it’s hockey

the nephew ( 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵 ) , the son of her sister she promised to keep an eye on for. ironically, it feels like she's seen him more than her own sister.
morality of blackmail , she has never taken a bribe and because of this mira finds herself in a morally righteous state. will she finally crack? the facade broken down to reveal she's just as bad as everyone else. this person can try.

what's forensic science like? is it law and order
Um...no. I'd say it's more like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and all of its spinoffs. Or Forensic Files. Forensic Files is probably the best example of what forensic science is (you can find playlist of forensic file episodes on youtube)
So there are different areas of forensic science: forensic biology, forensic chemistry, forensic toxicology, forensic anthropology, forensic psychology, forensic investigative science, fire arms technicians, bomb experts, trace and evidence analysts, forensic odontology...etc. There are also death scene investigators and medical examiners and they're also considered forensic/criminal justice. Criminal profilers/profiling is also "technically" forensic science, but a lot of people in the forensic science world don't particularly like that phrase as there's no really science behind it.
Law and Order is more police and law, there's not that much forensics that goes into that show. CSI and its spin-offs are a more "glamorized" version of forensics, but they really focus a lot of forensic toxicology and forensic chemistry, which is not what my particular field is.
My bachelors is in forensic biology, which means that if I wanted to, I could work in a lab as a DNA analyst and determine if blood found at the scene belongs to either the victim or the perpetrator  My masters is in forensic investigative science and what I want to do for my career is work either as a crime scene investigator or a death scene investigator.  I don’t particularly want to work in a lab.
Forensics can also work to not only put people away, but to exonerate people, like with the Innocence Project. If someone thinks they've been wrongly accused, they can go to the Innocence Project and they have their own team of forensic scientist to go back over evidence and determine if the person is really innocent or not.
Many people think that forensic science tends to side with prosecution in court cases, which is true, but really, forensic science is neutral territory. We just look at the evidence/facts, even if it's not what people want to hear

1. Are you named after anyone? Yes, actually! Alana, one of Ariel's sisters in the Little Mermaid. :) Obviously my parents added in an extra N. This extra N has led to so much confusion; at this point if you have roughly the right syllables, I'll answer to it.
2. When was the last time you cried? Literally yesterday. It wasn't FFXIV music for once but it was definitely a song and my brain imagined a story/music video style thing for it and I cried bc I am as sensitive as Meiko. I remember sitting there afterward like why the fuck am I doing this lmao
3. Do you have kids? Only Butternut at the moment, but I have always wanted to be a Mom. Sadly, I'm demisexual, and a lot of people in general don't really...like, get that or what it means. I do plan to hop back into the hell that is dating apps after the Vegas FFXIV Fanfest, though.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? I am definitely hella cynical, but I don't know if I use sarcasm excessively. I feel like a little too much sarcasm is a wee bit cringe.
5. What sports do you play/have you played? Literally zero outside of what gym required of us in school. I do enjoy swimming, though -- not that I've had much of a chance since moving away from Florida!
6. What’s the first thing you notice about other people? Lately I've been making extra observations around whether or not people take an interest in me. Do they keep the conversation all about them? Do they remember facts about me? It's a little disheartening when you realize how rare it is.
7. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings, scary movies give me so much anxiety; that being said, I do love a good true crime story because I am basic.
8. Any special talents? I don't know about special but I will state that I am highly competent in every job I've ever taken in my career; although this has led to burnout in past roles, I've learned to balance it and can recognize that my work ethic is pretty rare!
9. Where were you born? I was born in NYC, raised in Florida, where I lived until I was 24. Moved to Washington state and have been here ever since!
10. What are your hobbies? Writing, Gaming, Various Creative Projects with @aethericsea, and being a full-time BTS Army fan
11. Do you have any pets? Her name is Nikita Katrice Seraphina Butternut. She has a facebook.
12. How tall are you? 5'3", 5'4" if you measure me in the morning before my spine has compressed
13. Fave subject in school? English/Language Arts, mainly becaust it was easy
14. Dream job? I am very happy in my current job; I would have liked to been involved in the gaming industry more directly, but as an analyst for the industry I'm kind of 'yikes' about it now. So I can accept that that ship has sailed and I am content where I am.
15. Eye color? Dark Brown

Prologue.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
A LATE EVENING DINNER
My Parents insisted on bringing me to a fancy place to spend some time together talking about our lives and what's been going on. I loved going out to restaurant's- God just the food...but with my parent sit was a different story, you'll see.
I was sitting across from the two while they handed the menus off to the waiter waiting for them to say something first.
Did I forget to mention that I haven't seen them since they sent me out to college? That was when I was 18. I'm 26 now.
"So, tell me what has my precious daugther been up to these last few years?" Mom asked grabbing her glass of expensive red wine taking a sip eyeing me down while I try to come up with the right words to tell her.
Meanwhile my father has just been sitting there looking at his phone not paying any mind to us.
"Well, Recently I've gotten a new job" I lifted my glass of water to my lips looking into the glass as her face lights up with a smile.
"That's wonderful! Isn't it James?" Mom looks over to her side looking at dad, but he was still stuck on the phone.
She tapped his shoulder while saying his name again to get his attention and he looked up at her putting away the phone quickly into his suit jacket agreeing with my mom even though he had no idea what she was talking about.
She rolled her eyes and focused back on me- "Now, did you get a nice office? You at least need to be comfortable in your new workplace as a lawyer!"
This is what I was talking about when I said it was a different story...
God here comes the judgmental looks.
"Mom I'm not a lawyer, I work for the FBI as a Criminal Behavior Analyst." I said clearing my throat fidgeting with my hands looking back and forth between her and my fingers as I wait for her dramatic reaction.
She's never approved of my interests, I grew up on crime podcasts and documentaries while my older sister jenny went to med school and became a doctor like my parents wanted her too, they also wanted that for me but after I rejected it the first few times, they had just assumed I wanted to be a lawyer instead.
Yeah, me being a lawyer was not happening, I had to deal with enough from my rich egotistical parents and I was and still am not up for dealing with a random client's attitude because they gave all their money to an ex-girlfriend.
It just wasn't for me, but they wouldn't understand that.
Her smile dropped immediately, and she just stared at me for a moment giving me a disappointed look, she put her wine glass down and sighed- "Luci, you know that wasn't the career choice we had in mind for you."
Dad decided to also cut in adding "We have never judged you for your hobbies Lucinda but really? You can't be serious!" He whispered to avoid causing a scene.
"Yeah, never judged at all" I muttered, taking another sip of my water. So, the multiple times you've told me to stop listening to those "stupid videos" telling me it's a waste of time must've never happened?
In his eyes I must be crazy to go against what they claim to be "my real future" so I can keep the family successful and full of doctors, lawyers and accountants.
While dad keeps trying to change my mind, Mom sits there with her thoughts probably thinking on ways she could still get me to be a lawyer and possibly make me quit my job even though I haven't even worked a single night yet.
She stops my dad from telling me whatever nonsense he was saying that I wasn't even paying any attention to and says "Fine. You don't want to be a lawyer? That's okay." I just stop doing whatever I was doing and shoot her a confused look.
The waiter finally arrives with the food and places our dishes Infront of us, she waits for him to leave to speak up again.
"You want to work there then you're going to be working in a town where I have eyes and ears." She says as she grabs the knife and fork on the side to cut into her steak.
"Excuse me?"-
"You're an adult I know, but I want you to be safe. I want you to take your grandmothers house in Roseville. Since Grandma Millie has passed, I think you should have the house, you were always her favorite anyways..." She takes a bite of the meat on her fork, and I just smile to myself.
Well, that wasn't expected.
My grandma was the best. She always supported me and my interest...I was glad to live in that house. I always loved visiting her when she was there anyways, so this was a positive thing.
I'm still a bit worried about why she's not being unsupportive and furious about this but I'm just going to take it as a win for today and not question it, so she doesn't change her mind.
I smile at her.
"Thank you, mom."
"Don't mention it sweetheart."
After we all finish dinner and my dad pays for the bill, my mom tells me to drive up to the house in the morning and to pack my things tonight, it wasn't so late so I agreed. I said goodbye to them at the restaurant and left.
The drive home wasn't so long, and surprisingly the roads were empty which I was so thankful for because I did not want to sit there for 2 hours waiting on a busy highway.
I got home around 8pm and decided to just get started packing.
-
I opened the front door, dropping my keys in a basket on the side table and started taking off my jacket as I walked over to my room, I put my jacket on my desk chair and sat down. First, I just needed to email my employer about the location change.
"Hey I wanted to notify you that I will be taking a position in Roseville instead of here in the city, I hope you don't mind the sudden change, if anything ill be willing to talk about it.
Thank you."
-Lucinda Sidney Williams
I hit send and sigh, leaning back into my chair closing my eyes for a moment. Tomorrow I'm going to move into the house and start my first shift at my new job after a few nights.
It shouldn't be too bad right?
Whenever I visited Roseville, it was always a nice and safe place, I never really paid any attention to any crimes that had happen over there because I was a little kid, and my focus was spending time with Grandma Millie.
Even if anything did happen to us, she would always be there to protect me and my sister.
At least I won't have to deal with any case that's too crazy, living in Roseville will just be like old times.
What's the worse that could happen in a town like Roseville?
-an
AHH I'm so excited to start this book, and I know this doesn't even have a mention of the killer you all came for but just realize this is the introduction, and please tell me if this sucks or not I need feedback or I'm gonna keep unknowingly writing a terrible book that non of you enjoy. :(
also 1209 words is pretty short so I might work on longer chapters.

“WE’RE ALL JUST THE SAME - WHAT A SHAME”
INTRODUCING…
NAME: Ramona Colette Sari
GENDER & PREFERRED PRONOUNS: Cis woman {She/Her}
AGE: 28
BIRTHDAY: September 10, 1994
ZODIAC: Virgo Sun, Gemini Moon, Aries Rising
SEXUALITY: Bisexual {Fem preference}
FACE CLAIM: Lulu Antariksa
LABEL: The Protagonist
OCCUPATION: Crime Analyst (Outreach Unit of CMPD)
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Downtown
CHARACTER PLAYLIST: HERE.
UP NEXT: “1980S HORROR FILM” BY WALLOWS
BIOGRAPHY: TW DEATH, CSI EFFECT, FIRE, WRONGLY CONVICTED
Ramona grew up in Cape May, and never suffered a hatred for her hometown like most angsty teens usually did. Her lower middle-class household never made her feel deprived of anything; her mother a teacher at the elementary school, whilst her father was chief of police. Her parents were both supportive as well as caring - even with her father’s obscure hours. She was more of a father’s girl, not only glued to his side during her earlier years of life, but also seeing him as her role model even up to today.
The woman instantly took an interest in the criminal justice career path, as well as women’s advocacy; dressing up as Rosie the Reveter, as well as firefighters and cops alike for halloween growing up. Ramona was always one to be a voice for people who struggled to use theirs, or no one listened to them. Ramona was always a strong advocate for doing the right thing, even getting into fights throughout her younger years in order to help others. Ramona wound up leaving Cape May for her college years, with the push from her parents and was able to earn her BA in Criminology and Forensic Science.
Though Ramona favored this time in her life, seeing all her hard work pay off - her father was lost in a fire. It broke the young woman when she heard the news, but used that pain to help fuel her in her own career path; instantly attempting to fill in his shoes. She worked on the mainland as part of their SVU unit, consistently taking on more than she can handle in order to be taken seriously in the male-dominant field as she was gunning for a detective position. Always working by-the-book, she actually took a leap of faith when she wound up making the wrong call. No one is aware of her mess-up, seeing that she’s always been at the top of her game and her father was highly respected when he put in his time helping the community; basically making an innocent man go to jail for a crime he did not commit. It was due to the analysis of the fingerprints being faulty - but it was ultimately her gut that’s never failed her being off and her mind being fried from all the work. After the incident, she transferred to Cape May in order to be a crime analyst; both, giving her the fill of helping keep the community safe, whilst also ensuring she wasn’t going to make sure a huge mistake again.
EXTRA-EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT HER!
Being raised by her mother and father, Ramona has a strong sense of justice. She’s always the one you can count on to do the right thing, even if the choice is hard or leaves her with the short end of the stick. She loves crime shows, and also serial killer documentaries. Her love for true crime has made her the master of who-done-it scenarios, and she can figure out mystery movies within the first 15 minutes. This makes it easy for her to assume someone’s behavior, and she likes to particularly tease her friends by saying what they’re about to say - noting predictability. She also has a bit of a morbid sense of humor. Ramona is also very laidback, different from her usually tightly-wound self at work. When she’s sucked into something, just don’t intrude or she’ll snap at you. She has a tendency to be quite mean to men - this has a lot to do with her hatred of the patriarchy she lives in. There’s more of an inclining hatred towards the player-dude/bro types of men, and she’s quick to put them in their place. She also has a type of dislike towards the new money folk in Cape May; thinking they’re out of touch with Cape May’s values, as well as turning Cape May into more of a party city when it’s not in its foundation. Ramona is very outspoken and passionate when it comes to her beliefs, and she’s stubborn in them. Prone to being sarcastic, most people view her sarcasm as joking when it’s her voicing the truth. When being friends with Ramona, she’s really fun to be around; always down to do something as well as just stay in and throw a Netflix marathon. She’s always willing to help anyone out, and is someone that sticks by her group of friends in a protective manner. Definitely someone you’d want to have on your team, at the end of the day. That is, if you can handle her science facts.

Kate Fansler
“I didn’t say I object to Freud,” Kate said. “I said I objected to what Joyce called freudful errors—all those nonsensical conclusions leaped to by people with no reticence and less mind.”
This is the first we get to know about Kate in her debut in the 1964 novel In the Last Analysis by Amanda Cross (Carolyn Heilbrun years later explained she took the pseudonym because the crime novel genre had such a bad reputation it would have stunted her university career if she had been known to write them).
You either love her or hate her just after those two lines.
Kate is a professor of literature at a New York university and bristles when asked if she is single by a police officer asking for her alibi in the first chapter. We soon learn that Kate doesn’t suffer fools gladly and is easily annoyed, feels somewhat protective of her students, and relates more to the detective novels she read than the real-life case she is thrown into. (I’d say she is Lord Peter Whimsey’s goddaughter, Kate does think of him often, but she probably wouldn’t agree.)
The 1960s start to make themselves known and Kate finds herself on the fence mostly sympathizing with the feelings and aims of the student’s and feminist movements more than most people of her set but deploring the changing manners following from them.
Kate is first thrown into detection because a former student, who asked her for a recommendation of a psycho-analyst is found murdered on that man’s very couch. As Emanuel, the man she recommended, is a long-time friend and ex—the one she was discussion Freund with in her first sentence—, and the police seem to believe they need not look further, Kate gets involved.
Private life
Kate was born to a well-to-do white New York family, youngest of four, only girl and 14 years younger than her youngest brother. She grew up in a loving family who indulged her and “stood by hopelessly when she turned her back on society and became not only an ‘intellectual’, but a Ph.D.”
We first meet her at a never quite spelled out age. Her nephew-by-marriage-to-be, Jerry (22), whom she hires for footwork, thinks or her as “middle-aged”. She is already established as a university professor of English Literature, her nieces and nephews range between teenagers and “old enough to vote” (which would have been 21 in 1964); so probably somewhere in her middle-to-late thirties or early forties. Though nephews and nieces grow up, Kate doesn’t quite age at the same rate.
In the last Analysis, she lives “in faded elegance” in a four-room apartment overlooking the Hudson river.
In the first books, she is single, though she had lovers in her past. She sometimes rants about there being no word for the kind of relationships she had, where passion is but a small part of the whole.
Detection Style
Kate sort of follows in Lord Peter Whimsey’s footsteps.
Due to her many relatives, she usually knows someone who knows someone to introduce her to the people she wants to talk to. She’s sending Jerry out to talk to people she, due to her gender and position, can’t without arousing suspicions. And her line into the police is district attorney Reed Amhearst, whom she marries later in the series (keeping her maiden name).
She gathers facts by talking to people, in most cases with some pretext or another, not telling them she is investigating. She is often baffled and  brooding over facts. Like Miss Marple, she is good at recognition of structures, though her most of her cases and solutions hang on literature.
Books
In the Last Analysis  ( 1964)
The James Joyce Murder (1967)
Poetic Justice (1970)
The Theban Mysteries (1971)
Question of Max (1976)
Death in a Tenured Position (1981)
Sweet Death, Kind Death (1984)
No Word from Winifred (1986)
A Trap for Fools (1989)
The Players Come Again (1990)
An Imperfect Spy (1995)
The Puzzled Heart (1998)
Honest Doubt (2000)
The Edge of Doom (2002)
Commentary
Especially the early books have a screwball comedy feeling about them and I somehow always imagined Kate to look a lot like Kathrine Hepburn.
Violence is not graphically described, but a lot of topics come up, and the view on sex in the early books is still strongly influenced by Freund and moves in the tension between Freudian “Freedom to have sex” and sex as the main driving force of humanity vs old-fashioned religious morals (read: hang-ups) about sex. Modern interpretations of the characters would paint quite a different picture and part of the motive for murder in the James Joyce Murders is more horrifying now than it was then.
On the All about Agatha podcast, they deduct points for Christie’s own prejudices showing up in the text, especially when they exceed the level that was usual at the time of writing. In the two novels I read recently (as opposed to the 1990s), I haven’t caught her in that, though most of her characters sometimes say things that would be inexcusable to say today. I recommend to read the books as you read a text about a strange und unknown culture. The 1960s are, in a way, just that.
The first book of the series I read was Death in a Tenured Position (1981), which is set in the Harvard English department which struggles with a female professor in its midst, unfortunately not Kate, who visits to help said professor even though she doesn’t really like her. Here, Kate meets women from an undoubtedly lesbian commune, some of whom she likes better that the aforementioned female professor.

Investigating the Criminal Justice Academic Route
Embarking on a journey in the criminal justice field offers many opportunities for individuals passionate about upholding the law, promoting justice, and ensuring public safety. Whether you aspire to become a law enforcement officer, a legal professional, a forensic scientist, or a criminologist, pursuing an academic path in criminal justice lays the foundation for a rewarding and impactful career. This article delves into the various aspects of navigating an academic journey in criminal justice, from choosing the right educational program to exploring potential career paths.
The first step in pursuing a career in criminal justice is selecting the right educational program. Criminal justice programs are offered at various levels, including associate's, Bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Each level of education provides unique opportunities and prepares students for different roles within the criminal justice system.
Associate's Degree
An associate's degree in criminal justice typically introduces students to the field. These programs usually take two years to complete and provide students with foundational knowledge in law enforcement, corrections, and criminal law. Graduates of associate's degree programs may qualify for entry-level positions in law enforcement agencies, private security firms, or corrections facilities.
A bachelor's degree in criminal justice is popular for individuals seeking to advance their careers. These programs typically take four years to complete and offer a more comprehensive curriculum than associate's degree programs. Students can expect to study various topics, including criminology, criminal procedure, forensic science, and criminal justice ethics. A bachelor's degree can qualify graduates for multiple positions in law enforcement, corrections, probation, parole, and social services.
Master's Degree
A master's degree in criminal justice may be the ideal option for those looking to specialize in a specific area of criminal justice or advance into leadership roles. Master's programs in criminal justice typically require two to three years of study beyond the Bachelor's degree and offer coursework in criminal justice administration, policy analysis, research methods, and specialized topics like cybercrime or homeland security. Graduates with a master's degree may pursue careers as criminal investigators, intelligence analysts, probation or parole officers, or policy analysts.
A doctoral degree in criminal justice is the highest level of education in the field. These programs are designed for individuals interested in conducting research, teaching at the university level, or pursuing high-level administrative positions in criminal justice agencies or organizations. Doctoral students often specialize in criminological theory, criminal justice policy, or administration and complete original research as part of their dissertation requirements.
