Tiny Dancers: The Night Café

This post was drafted November 3rd. On November 6 The Night Café announced that Sean Martin, lead singer, unexpectedly died at age 26. Obviously I am not affiliated with the band at all, but for some reason this hit me super hard. For the longest time I was considering maybe not posting this, but I figured that this is what Sean would have wanted, for you guys to listen and experience his songs. So do me a favour, do the other boys a favour and go give them a listen. They need it, and they deserve it. To Sean: rest in Paradise 🤍🕊️

Named after the famous Van Gogh painting, these four guys met in secondary school and decided that music was more fun that studying (they are right). They released their first EP Get away From The Feeling in 2017 and their debut album 0151 came out in 2019. They have since opened for The wombats, but they're ready to take over the world themselves now!

As Rogue had been captured and brainwashed by Power Broker, Gambit spends his time talking her out of her brainwashing, refusing to leave even though she is on her power meltdown. Gambit tries to reason with Rogue but she keeps on punching and zapping but not killing him. When Rogue chokes Gambit, he touches her face to make her absorb the powers and memories so that she could remember who she is. Rogue stumbles over from the overload. When Gambit checks on her, Rogue headbutts him but she's glad that she woke up from the brainwashing.

Then, Power Broker gets bored of watching the couple so he pumps himself up with the Power Chip to make himself stronger and try to take down the couple. Rogue and Gambit fight the Power Broker. While Rogue grapples with Power Broker, Gambit has to take the remote away from him. Lady Deathstrike eventually grows tired of the Power Broker that she snatches the Power Chip from him, causing the brainwashed minions to wake up and for the Power Broker to become powerless. Manifold, Electro, Juggernaut and Absorbing Man had woke up from the brainwashing and they ganged up on Power Broker while Gambit and Rogue walk away from the scene.

...but real talk, I just watched the Oscars and I had no idea that Carl Weathers passed. Legendary performer who played iconic characters. RIP King. I'm going to go re-watch Predator now.

Wood Engraving Wednesday

On this first Wednesday in April, we mark the day with this wood engraving by Seattle artist and engraver Dillon Bennett from the 2020 calendar of the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN). Bennett, a student of the master engraver and printmaker Carl Montford, came to printmaking and letterpress through Seattle’s School of Visual Concepts. Of his medium, Bennett writes:

Through the limitations of wood engraving as a medium, [I] explore the minutiae and complexities of the natural world. Intricate figures and scenes take on a graphic quality, revealing the simple beauty of the forms. The process itself, and the deliberation and intention with which each mark is made, lend a weight to the images, each one taking on a life of its own.​
